Right, so. sorry about the slight delay, we've got a line of scattered thunderstorms rolling through. Nothing real worrying, though we're under a couple of weather advisories for flash floods, I think. no big, i can swim, haha.

Anyway. Archive here:

Oh, and total aside: Is there any interest in a second Brigitte quest? I might plan one out if there is, if not, no big.

++

The Louvre, you've decided, is about as interesting as the National gallery was, back in London. Which is to say, not terribly.

You've spent most of the day in the painting collection, 'admiring' the works- You still don't really quite get art, to be honest, and you think Katya's just going through the motions too. She's mentioned that she had classes in the arts before- part of her time at the academy- so maybe you're wrong and she's actually able to appreciate them for what they are.

Honestly, she's actually been kind of close mouthed about herself since her revelation at Barin- you'd been briefly worried you'd said something wrong, but she hasn't been acting like it. If anything, she's been closer to you than she has been since the crash in California, which is a welcome change.

The two of you weren't able to see Jean-luc leave- you'd tried to, but that section of the rail station had been closed off, with guards posted, and arguing the point wasn't going to achieve anything. You imagine you'll run into him in Poland.

At the moment, though, you're making your way towards the Egyptian and near eastern antiquities, which, you hope, should be more interesting. The Egyptians, you know, were famous partly for their building projects, but also because they were one of the earliest civilizations to really formalize their relationship with witches outside of religion, and their grasp on theory was pretty good, even by today's standards. You're personally not sure if that means that they were advanced, or Magical theory takes ice ages to develop.

The near eastern department, on the other hand, is interesting because of the Assyrians. While your ancient history, especially with the first civilizations isn't that good, you do seem to recall that they were one of the first- if not the first- civilization to really allow witches into direct combat, along with keeping the first paid, professional army. Of course, it's entirely possibly you're remembering that wrong- Ancient history was never your thing.

However, Katya seems to have stopped- causing you to nearly run into her, you check yourself in time.

“I am unsure where to be going next.” She says, looking around. “I am wanting to see the Egyptian wing, but I am also wanting to see the Near eastern antiquities and the roman collection.”

She whips around, looking at you. “I do not know. You decide.”

[x] Let's go look at the Egyptian side first, should be interesting.

You consider for a moment before heading for the Egyptian wing, saying “Let's go look at the Egyptian stuff first, it should be interesting.”

Katya follows, hurrying for a second to walk alongside- you think, for a half-second, she's going to reach over and take your hand, but she doesn't, instead nodding. “The Egyptians are interesting, yes. Mother spoke of visiting before they expelled our advisors in ninteen seventy two, but she must have gone long before then, I do not remember her making such a trip.”

You nod- you always kind of wished you'd been able to pull a deployment on one of the carriers in the med, but up until the outbreak of this war, you'd been a pacific fleet pilot. Weird how that's changed since. Of course, you fully expect to end up following Nixon around, now, and who knows where that will take you.

The Egyptian department's collection is one of the biggest in the world, you're told, featuring items from the ancient Egypt on in through the third kingdom and beyond that out into the Roman period.

You start out with the oldest works- the Gebel el-Arak Knife, which no one seems to know a whole lot about. Purchased form a dealer in 1914, the museum here dates it as being from around 3450BC or thereabouts. While you have to admit the ivorywork on the handle is amazing- whoever carved it must have been an absolute master- the blade itself doesn't even look fit for ceremonial purposes. You state as much to Katya, who laughs.

“It is not functional as a knife.” She says.

You frown. “Then what good is it?” You ask.

She laughs again. “It is a focus, on loan from Coven of Paris to the museum. It says so on the plaque there.” She points. “By modern standards it is weak, but it is a focus.” She smiles. “There is even a warning at the bottom for visiting witches to not attempt to use it.”

1/2
>>
“I didn't know you could read French.” You say, still struggling with the plaque.

She laughs again. “I learned many things.” She says, kind of cryptically. “I am fluent in many languages.”

“And you still can't get contractions down.” You say, grinning. She shrugs.

“They seem lazy to me.” She says. “Shall we continue?”

Your next stop is at the statue of Horus, who, according to Egyptologists, was the patron god of witches. Well, witches, the sky, war, and hunting. The statue, taller than both of you by enough that, even if Katya sat on your shoulders, her head would still barely reach it's waist, sits kind of forlornly near an exit.

Katya reads the plaque- aloud, for your sake, noting that, for a god of witches, he certainly doesn't seem all that interested in them or any of their talents- his spheres just don't match. You shrug.

She turns around. “Shall we move on? There is still the Roman and Greek departments, and the near east. I have been to Iran, once, but we were not able to visit much.” She says, then smiles. “And certainly not play tourist!”

[x] Yeah, let's check out the Greek and roman collections, I bet they're a lot more in depth.

You nod. “Yeah, let's check out the Greek and Roman collections, I bet they're a lot more in depth.”

Katya also nods, agreeing. “I would believe they are. I believe I saw a notice that a traveling exhibit on relics from the battle of Thermopylae are here.”

You hadn’t seen that- then again, you also hadn't been able to really get much out of the local newspaper. “No kidding?” You ask.

She nods. “Of course no kidding. It should be interesting.”

You nod- while you're not entirely sold on the concept of a mere three hundred men standing against an army that they're saying numbered in the hundreds of thousands- up to the point where each spartan would have been outnumbered a thousand to one- you can't exactly dismiss it, either. Sixty three to one in the air over Berlin is hardly a thousand to one, not by any stretch of the imagination, but the odds do get a lot longer when you figure three of the sixty three were massive flying fortresses that used to demolish wings of fighters forty five years ago.

The rooms in the department aren't quite as numerous, and most of them focus heavily on objects of art- you can't say you're surprised, considering that the Louvre is an art museum. Most of the department is made up of marble statues, painted vases, and jewelry- there's not much of what you'd call 'functional' pieces- no spears, only a few shields or pieces of armor, and even those seem to have been largely ornamental. Still, Katya points out several pieces designed for witches- one battered bronze breastplate, a couple of shields, a set of greaves. Most of them from the section devoted specifically to Sparta.

“Why's so much of this Spartan?” You ask, eventually. “Didn't Athens have more witches?”

Katya nods. “By far. But Athenian witches weren't all fighters.” She points at the breastplate- holed through in a couple places, punctures, maybe arrows- too small for spearheads, you think. “Every Spartan witch was a soldier first. She took her place in line along the hoplites, used her talent to reinforce the line, shield her brothers from arrows, let her hit hard enough to shatter armor and open a hole in the opposing line.”

She motions back to the sculptures and jewelry, some of it made for or by witches. “The other city states, they did not feel the same way. Athens allowed a witch to follow whatever path she wished, and many became healers or artists or philosophers.” She snorts, somewhat derisively. “Many of them would not fight, and fled the city when the Greeks lost at Thermopylae.”

She shrugs. “They are influential, but I feel no kinship with them.” She says, turning back to the breastplate- almost seems like she's trying to see the witch that once wore it, see who she was, what she did. She motions to it. “This girl, whoever she was, she was my sister. I feel we would have understanding if we were able to talk.”

You're about to respond, when Inspector Victore shows up at your elbow. “My friends, pardonnez-moi for the intrusion, but there is a problem.”

Katya turns to look at him, while you make a half turn. His ever-present smile is significantly weaker, and you note that while he doesn't have his pistol out, the clasp over the holster is undone.

Funny part about that, actually. Most people do tend to not even know that it was better than 300 or so Spartans that stayed behind during the famous last stand- the number was probably closer to, what, 1500 or so, all told?

Speaking of, gates of fire is an amazing book, especially the image there at the end where the Spartans and the allied Greeks- the 1500 that stayed behind- swap around cloaks and shields, so they'd all basically be from the same place.

[x] What's the matter, inspector?

You nod and finish the turn, waiting a second so Katya is just ahead of you, between yourself and the inspector. “What's the matter, inspector?” you ask, noting his pace.

He shakes his head. “Not in here, my friend. I do not want to cause a panic. You nod, following him, noting you've been joined by a few men in plain clothes- the inspector seems to take this in stride.

Outside, you notice that there's actually a number of people being escorted out, seperate vehicles leaving once their occupants are inside. The inspector nods to the uniformed police near their vehicles- you mount a black sedan in the middle of two metropolitan police cars and take off without much wait.

“So what's going on?” You ask.

The inspector exhales hard. “We were warned by the DGSE. They claim to have uncovered a soviet mission to kill or capture NATO officers in the city here, as well as other major European cities. We acted as soon as we were warned.”

You nod- suddenly remembering the bounty on your head.

The inspector, seemingly reading your thoughts, looks around. “They have increased the bounty on you , my friend. You would make a man or woman very rich if they were to bring you in. We do not plan to let this happen, not from the soil of the republique.”

>>
“How bad is it?” Katya asks. “Do we have time to recover our things?”

He nods. “Oui, oui. Your beautiful dress will not have to catch up to you through the military mail. There is a battalion of the legion in the city on alert, now, and the Garde republicaine is also on alert. We are confident the plot is defeated, mais...” He spreads his hands and smiles. “One is never sure.”

Katya shifts slightly closer to you- but responds. “It is no great loss. We were having to leave tomorrow anyway. We are fortunate to have you watching out for us, inspector.” She says.

He nods- you see his head bob up and down in the passenger seat. “Oui. Well, one does not make a promise to the mother of night he does not intend to keep or die trying.” He says, then chuckles. “This is not a problem for a man such as myself, who has at his call all the tools of la republique.”

Your convoy makes it to the hotel in good time- you're pretty sure the police escort helps. Out front, a pair of legion VAB transports sit, their dismounted infantry creating a cordon nearby, while other visitors- you recognize general Crozier, now dressed in BDUs and with his own rifle and body armor, standing near the door, looking back. He grins when he sees you. “Hell of a note, ain't it son?” He asks.

[] Bit of a buzzkill, yessir.

You nod. “Yessir, bit of a buzzkill.”

He grins, pulling out a cigar nub and planting it in his teeth. “Well, son, Hurry up and get y'alls things. I'm the ranking NATO officer in this hotel and I'll be damned if anyone gets left behind. Best hurry up.”

You nod, heading upstairs to your room and unlocking the door.

You both walk in- and immediatley spot the damage. Someone- or someones- were in here. “Katya, is-” You're interrupted when Konstantina rolls around the corner, an AK-74 leveled at your chest. She only holds you as a target for a hair of a second before yanking the rifle around and letting it hang by it's strap. “My Love!” She shouts, breaking cover. “You are here!”

[x] Konstantina, what happened here?

You pause- your brain finally processing that, for a split second, you were staring down the bore of an assault rifle. It files the information away under 'process never' and chugs merrily right along, rapidly processing the situation.

Then the door closes behind you, causing you to start. Damnit.

Konstantina nods, then frowns when she sees Katya. “My love! They were waiting for you here. I tried to reason with them- killing you would be a grave disservice to the people!” She says, looking around. “Their commander did not agree with me, and said your death would make them all rich men.”

You look around- noting that, yes, there are some bullet holes in the walls. “I take it you disagreed?”

Konstantina nods, smiling. “My love is far too important to be wasted in such a manner. They attempted to restrain us.” She shrugs, lightly. “They were no threat.”

“Us?” Katya asks.

“I am here also.” Natalya's voice- soft, carrying barely the necessary force to reach your ears, answers. “There are no others.”

Konstantina nods happily. “But we must leave, my love! We cannot stay here, there will be others. They will be behind, they did not expect us. But they will come.”

You quickly gather the important stuff, while Katya gets all her new clothes together and hesitates a second before stuffing them all in with your personal gear, managing, somehow, to get everything in between your two bags.

“My love we must hurry.” Konstantina says. “The longer we remain here, the longer we are a target.”

“We're packed, good to go.” You say.

“Frank..” Katya says, quietly. “how do you plan to explain them?” She indicates Konstantina and Natalya. “I am not thinking the French will be pleased to see them, regardless of what happened here.”

[x] We'll talk to General Crozier, he'll help us out. He owes me, remember?

“We'll talk to General Crozier, he'll help us out.” You say, shouldering your pack and stepping to the door. “He'll help us out.”

Downstairs, he meets you in the lobby- shooting a look at your suddenly increased number of witches- and the fact that neither Konstantina nor Natalya let go of their AK-74s. You do note, he doesn't go for his rifle, just stands there for a minute, chewing on the nub of his cigar.

“Son, mind tellin me what's goin on, here?” He asks, after a moment.

“Sir, these two witches are-” You start, but he cuts you off.

“Son, I don't care about their names, I want to know why all of a sudden you've got two soviet witches coming down here with you. Something you want to tell me?” He asks.

“Yes, sir. They eliminated a Spetsnaz kill team waiting to ambush myself and Miss Litvyak in my room.” You supply. “They've been with us at-”

He waves the rest off. “Son, I'm going to send some legionnaires up there to check. Are you damn sure they're telling the truth?”

“Sir, I absolutely trust them with my life on this.” You say, thankful that Konstantina and Natalya have both had the good sense to keep their mouths shut.

“What the hell you want us to do with them, son?” He asks. “Can't damn well leave them here, and there's no way SCHAEF will allow them anywhere near a Polish base without the NSA digging all up into their personal files, and maybe not even then.”

“Return them to castle Barin, general.” Katya says. “They left of concern for Lieutenant commander Bishop's safety and well being, now that that is confirmed, they can return to the castle with no further trouble.” She half turns to address the two witches. “Is that not so, sisters?”

>>
>>34590829
Give them the (TIE) D.
>>
They both nod- hesitantly, but nod. “We can remain at the castle until this check is passed. Then we can join my love at the front, where we belong.” Konstantina says, and you wince when General Crozier gives you a look at 'my love'

He sighs and rubs his temples. “Son, I don't know how Admiral Nixon does it with you, but this ain't regulation at all. By rights I should be putting all of ya under arrest till this can get sorted out.”

You stiffen somewhat, but he continues. “But I owe ya, and you trust them. If you swear to me, hand on the bible and looking at a flag, that these two will return to whatever witch hold they were in and ain't gonna leave until it's been worked out, I'll believe it. But it's your ass if they don't.”

You hesitate only for a second. “Sir, I promise you they'll return to the castle and remain there until reassigned elsewhere or sent home.” You say.

He nods. “Good enough, son. Pickup's on the way, we're chopping a stallion out here to pick your little party up to head back to jolly ol England.”

The legionnaires both come back down. “Merde.” one says, quietly to the general, putting distance between himself and your group. “It is- we will send in a police crew to clean the rooms.”

Konstantina nods, satisfied, while Natalya just looks up at you, her eyes still almost devoid of life. Almost.

The general nods at you, considering the situation, then finally, says “Son, you're about the damndest thing I ever seen. Do ya just fall into this naturally, or what?”

It turns out that what we thought was Stalin was actually a Martian robot imposter, because they secretly attempted to remove him some time after the Martian War!

Konstantina was the real Stalin, just using the magic of Soviet Science to lay low while he gets Putin to assemble a loyal cadre of witches to take back what his country!

Konstantina is attempting to seduce Frank to have one of the most effective and lethal air assets in the world to use against the Martian menace!

[x] It's- yeah. Let's go with that, sir.

“It's- “ You pause, at a total loss for words. “Yeah. Let's go with that, sir.”

He looks at you, pulls his cigar nub out, opens his mouth, stops, then puts it back in and grunts. Finally, he just shakes his head. “I want you to stay right here, son, in the lobby, till we get some more troops here. There's some more legion on the way but we'll have you outta here before that.”

“This building is not secure.” Natalya says, in her half-whisper, turning her unearthly stare to the general. “There are three more teams inbound.”

He goggles at her for a second, then looks up at you. You shrug. “Sir, I've flown against her once. She-” You pause. “The stuff she can do to physics is unholy and wrong.”

He snorts- but all the same, calls for a pair of nearby legionnaires. After a quick exchange- in French, you note- the two of them sprint back outside. He grins. “Can't give 'em orders, but damn sure they'll take advice.” He says. “I'm not gonna try to get ya out of here on her word alone, but I figure that a battalion of legion can handle three spetsnaz kill teams.” He says, looking back over his shoulder as a platoon of troops- and a pair of tank witches, all legion- troop in and begin to set up in the old hotel.

Natalya and Konstantina shake their heads at the legion's deployment- though you assume that this is just the stuff in case any of the teams get through, which you doubt. You've seen too much to buy into the ugly rumor that French troops won't fight, but the legion, you know, prides itself on being the meanest, nastiest group of badasses around.

General Crozier, apparently disagreeing with Natalya and Konstantina and nodding, satisfied, looks over at you. “Son, sorry to say, there's nowhere to stuff you and your pretty little entourage without it just causing more headaches. If shit hits the fan in here, hit the deck, I'm fairly sure I can soak up a few rounds-” He grins and raps his knuckles against the center of his body armor, where the strike plates are. “But listen to the legion if that happens. I'm just lookin out for my boys.”

“All due respect, general, I'm navy.” You say, grinning. He laughs.

“You think you're navy. You're an honorary member of the seventy ninth, now, son.” He grins. “And the first rule in the seven-nine is that the commander is always the first pair of boots in the AO and the last pair of boots to leave.” He looks around. “I don't see anybody here that ranks me, so I guess that makes me commander.”

The wait is fairly tense, even with morale high- you thought you heard automatic weapons fire from deeper into the city, but you can't have been certain- you only start to relax when the deep thud of a CH-53E's rotors reaches you.

The general looks up, moving over to the door and looking outside as the big helo touches down in the square. “There's your ride, son.” He says. “I'm leaving with the legion. Take care.”

“You too general!” you call- he's actually pretty decent. For an infantryman.

The four of you board the big sea stallion, rattling around it's almost empty, cavernous interior. The crew chief and door gunner look over at you and grin, the chief shaking his head. You find a headset and plug it into the box along the fuselage wall. “What's up, chief?”

“Just laughin at all this, sir. Take a look.” He says, motioning you forward.

From his perch behind one of the bird's guns, you can see out across the city- and there's dozens of choppers up, picking up, you assume, high-ranking officers. “Don't this about beat all?” He says. “Well, whatever, ain't my bag. One way to castle barin, sir. Might as well get comfortable, it'll be a while.”

At least you won't have to fight for leg room, you think. Though shoulder space may be at a premium when Katya sits next to you- and Konstantina takes the seat on the other side.
