Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you healed a friend's wounds at the expense of your health, then took a bath.

Once you're suitably clean you fold you assume a meditative pose and try to slip into a trance. You find it inordinately difficult, even submerged as you are in warm water it takes you several minutes to slip away. The ebb and flow of vys in your surrounding slowly fades into view, the real world melting away. Instead of trying to improve your mastery of an element, or learn an effect, you instead turn your sight inwards, towards your own reserves and the vys that pervades you. Your perception seems to shift, until it's almost like you're looking at yourself from an outside perspective.

Your vys is... entirely wrong. Normally, it is diffused more or less evenly throughout one's body, with a concentration in one's core. That is not the case with you. There is a thick, oddly shaped glob of vys that almost looks solid running down your spine with a concentration around your neck. The edges are shifting and wriggling, almost like a living thing. You'd posit that's due to wearing your armor for so long, some kind of blockage or build up. More worrying than that, is that the rest of your body is completely devoid of vys. There is no concentration in your core, none in your limbs at all. Just that thick glob running down your back.

Out of curiosity, you try to cast a simple spell; to create a hovering ball of fire in front of you. One of the writhing tendrils of vys branching off of the glob adhered to your spine is ripped off and channeled to your core, where it's broken apart and converted to actual usable vys. Most of the energy is lost at this stage, leaving you barely enough to actually cast the spell. The ball of flame appears in front of you but only last a few seconds before sputtering out.

(1/2)
>>
You're not entirely sure how to interpret this. Obviously something is wrong but you're at a loss as to what that might be. You suppose you could try expending all of your remaining vys in one massive spell, in the hopes that once the messed up vys is removed you'll once more begin generating normal vys as all living things do. You could also just try and get some rest and hope it breaks apart with the passage of time.

>Expend what remains of your vys, in the hopes of returning yourself to normal.
>Just wait it out. Relax for a while longer in the baths and then head to the library for some reading.
>As above, but instead head for the gardens to socialize. You've been cooped up in your room too long.
>As above, but you really ought to get around to taking inventory of all your loot. Count out how much gold and silver you've got.
>As above, but check in on Skull Kid. Mortia seems to be acclimating rather well to the new dimension but you've barely seen or heard from him since coming here.

Here's a plan I have that's been stewing for a little bit and it's just now taken form.
I think we can all admit that The Water Temple wasn't as good as we hyped it up to be. Racist monks, a lazy Varistha, it could definitely be better.
This along with the fact that our party is growing rapidly has given me an epiphany.
We need our own HQ, preferably in a Rhynian Ruin that Fulvia and Mortia can use to start restoring the empire and more importantly so that we have a place that we can call home.
>>
>>34656895
>Repeatedly mentioned as the best combatant in our party, skill wise.
>Absolutely wrecks shit with that Elaudian armor.
>Saved our life repeatedly
>Shitty sword.
>>
>>34657028

>>
>>34656844

We haven't even spoken to Mortia outside of PLOT and were keeping her.
>>
>>34657028
>Absolutely wrecks shit with that Elaudian armor.

>Saved our life repeatedly
Once.
>>
>>34657011
>We need our own HQ,
Fuck that idea, and the temple was hyped up by you retards who forgot the spirit of the quest qas to explore.
>>
>>34657028
Its all apart of the "dickass" theory, the person may be good at what they do, but if they are insufferable outside of doing their job, its not worth keeping them around
>>
>>34657011
Agreed, though the academy is kinda filling this role at this moment.
A ruin would require a lot of work/time to make it safe/functional.
That's why I was asking in the ask page and the previous threads about building temples in place strong with magical properties in 1 element.
>>
>>34656895
1.) Darzi isn't a shitty sword.
2.) Your analogy is poorly worded and not well thought out.

>>34657011
You guys do realize we could just buy a villa or something.
>>
>>34656895
>>34657054
That's a fallacious as fuck argument you got there m80. Numero uno for keeps: she's got potential. No one else has as much command potential or Water vatis potential. Chryssa and Prof have to get to Vatis before they can branch out, Fuliva is an old dog who can't learn new tricks, Mortia handicapped her self for immediate gainz, and SK is magically retarded. Keeping her around, especially at the water temple, with result in a nifty support healer. As we saw in the caverns, once we run out of vys, party survivability plummets. Also, our mates are specced for assualt and striking, with tiny arse vys pools they can use for fuck all else. Dos razones: Social dynamics. Chryssa likes her. She's been helping your waifu get out of her shell and improving her confidence. Darzi is probably Chryssa's only female friend at this point. Also, only Darzi has the cojones to point out bad ideas in the making or fuck-ups afterwards. Cuz Chryssa is dismissive, Prof is submissive, and SK is depressive. Mortia and Fulvia are crazy as ten hell-bats, so we're not getting anything out of them.
>>
>>34657193
Why waste money when we could just find an ancient rhynian facility with all sorts of gadgets?
>>
>>34657240
Yeah, but a villa has the bonus of being a center of production. We'd be able to make money off of it.
>>
>>34657226
So what you're saying is Darzi is your favorite and you're throwing a bitch fit now that shes gone? Great got it.
>>
>>34657106
I enjoy Darzi as a character.
Mostly because she doesn't automatically go along with everything we fucking say.
It's boring to be surrounded by Yes Men.
>>
>>34657226
>b-but she doesn't act like our lapdog that makes her baaad

Forget it man, these people will never learn.
>>
>>34657240
Why even want a base, when we have a carriage that is good enough?
I still think its a waste of time and money, since we would rarely visit it and it would be a chore to return to it.
>>
>>34657226
freakin agreed it's nice to have someone with the Cajones to point out when any of our idea's are bad. Since we're in Samjan land it's also best to have her with us because she has connections and we basically don't because well, we're banished. so she's useful and she's the only other healer i mean what if we fuckin use up a crapton of Vys and can't heal everyone? It's nice to have a contingency plan
>>
>>34657290
Fuck that, imagine how much dosh we could make if we renovated a rhynian facility and started doing all sorts of research and crazy experiments.
>>34657323
Well we could leave some party members there and communicate with them with our brooches making money on the side, we could also store stuff there once Ricky finally turns on us and we have to ditch the cloak.
>>
You observe the writhing mass of compacted vys that clings to your spine for a few moments. An idea occurs to you, you need to see if new vys you bring in is compacted like this or if it goes into your normal reserves. With that in mind, you start channeling your vys to heal yourself of what few internal injuries remain. From your third person perspective you see strips of vys peeled away from the compacted mass and quickly converted into regular vys before being sent to mend a burst blood vessel and burns in your stomach and throat, then move on to alleviating some significant brain swelling Darzi missed. No wonder you've had a terrible migraine.
>Vys Pool: (9/[10])

However, at your current level healing barely taxes you at all. Honestly, it's child's play. You pull yourself out of your meditation with some difficulty and once more fully conscious of your surroundings wade across the pool to retrieve your cloak. You reach inside and withdraw the shockwave sword, beginning to channel vys into the blade. It seems to take an inordinate amount of time to drain yourself of vys, normally you could just deposit as much as you liked without a second thought, it would take hardly any time at all. It takes you a full minute to get rid of just a fraction of your usual reserves. Once you've finished, you slip the sword back into your cloak and lazily drift through the warm waters back to your spot on the bench.

Exhausted, you slip into a trance much easier than you did on your first attempt. Your surroundings are replete with vys, and it's not a difficult task to refill your reserves. You slowly coax yourself into that strange out of body state that you were in previously and are pleased to see that, instead of globbing on to that weird compacted vys that currently only seems to congeal to your neck, it slowly dissipates throughout your torso and limbs. Unfortunately it seems blocked at your neck by that odd vys.
>Vys Pool: (15/[15])
(1/2)
>>
>>34657290
The problem with that is that we have no goal that requires massive amounts of dosh. If we did I'd be all for a villa.
If we commandeer a Rhynian facility we make 3 of our party members happy as well as working towards the far off goal of resurrecting the Rhynian Empire.
I think that's more fun than making more money for more money's sake.
>>
>>34657394
>we could also store stuff there
Thats the thing, we don't really have that much stuff ignoring the furniture.
>>
You feel immeasurably better. Your aches and pains are subsiding and you don't feel nearly so exhausted. In order to dispell the last of the blockage you channel a burst of vys into carving a “Mikhael Was Here” on the wall above you in flowing, elaborate script. It's taxing enough that the last of the compacted vys is spent and, with that done, you move on to restoring your reserves to as full as you're able. It seems as if, though the blockage has been removed, your body is still too exhausted to really sustain the amount of vys you're used to containing.
>Vys Pool: (20/[20])

Your eyes snap open. You're still not in top shape, but compared to how you felt when you woke up this morning you feel amazingly better. You soak for a while longer in the baths, rinse yourself off once more, and then step out of the baths to dry yourself off using your cloak. One of the benefits of being a portal to the void, your cloak is amazingly absorbent. Once dried off you get dressed and make your way back into the temple proper. Judging from the brief glimpse of the outside world you managed to get through the stairwell up to the arena it's roughly midday, likely an hour or so past noon.

You make your way through the temple complex, passing by a group of monks meditating. You pause for a moment to observe their methods, they seem to be hosting some sort of competition. One of them will hurl a spike of ice and the other will deflect it away to prevent it from hitting them, the other will try to freeze their opponent solid and they'll simply melt the ice before it can encase them. The contest finally ends when a sort of purplish black discoloration starts to spread across the face of the Vatis nearest you. The skin swells up slightly, sthe skin becoming waxy and further discoloring to a deep black.

The mediator, an older Vatis with greying hairs and a well groomed beared, steps in and puts an end to the contest by blasting both vatis with a stream of water. They're shocked awake, the Vatis with the blackened face reaching a hand up and poking at the discolored flesh. He looks mildly panicked, but the mediator simply steps over and places a hand on his cheek. You feel a burst of magic, and when the mediator removes his hand the wound is gone.

(1/2)

That was an interesting technique displayed, you can't really recall ever seeing anything like that. The two monks who were competing become embroiled in an argument, apparently about whether or not the victor took the match too far by endangering the loser's life. You move on, seeking out Skull Kid's room. It's only a few doors down from your own, and when you knock his voice answers. “You may enter.” His tone is strange, overly formal and fairly emotionless. You push the door open regardless and find him hunched over his desk with strange, alien tools sprawled out around him. In front of him is a jumble of metal parts, mostly copper from what you tell, and he's set up some kind of... kiln, or smelter next to his desk. Where did he even get the materials for that?

He doesn't look over his shoulder as you enter, seems he's rather focused on whatever it is he's doing. Half of those weird sensors that adorn his mask are filmed over or otherwise sealed off. One eye in particular has slid its way out of his head and is practically pressed up against whatever it is he's working on. He's got some kind of hand held device that oozes a sort of molten metal and he's using it to adhere a tightly coiled copper wire to a curved copper plate. You're... not really sure what he's accomplishing, to be honest. “How are you feeling, Skull Kid?”

He looks over his shoulder, single lens retracting into his helmet. “Oh! It's you. I thought it was one of those monks come to ask me more questions. You know, I thought they'd leave me be after I showed I didn't understand them, but they just laughed and then one of them showed up speaking the Interlingua. Then I had to refuse to answer their questions, but those bastards are persistent. Wanted to know all about where you 'found me' and how you 'restored me to working condition'. Didn't think it would be so irritating to just be an interesting gadget somebody found.”

He waves a hand dismissively, once more turning his focus to his project. “What is it you're working on?” You ask, taking a seat on his bed. There are seldom few other locations to sit. He shrugs his shoulders. “I've got a theory that vys can sort of be channeled like electricity can, so I'm working on a device that, when activated, will draw vys and channel it at some target with an output of my choosing. I mean, I'm not supposed to be able to use magic but Fulvia can do it, right? Her generator is actually what gave me the idea.”

(1/2)
>>
That sounds... fancy. Useful too. Skull Kid continue to ramble on about his project. “I'm not sure how I'll manage to draw vys from the surroundings but I figure I can weasel that information out of Fulvia, I might also end up needing your help your help, since I'm told you're more or less the resident expert when it comes to magic. Oh, and I'll need to figure out what sort of housing I'll need to hold the power source, and some sort of nonconducting material to act as an insulator. Ceramic would work, but no. That's too bulky. Paper would catch fire, glass is too fragile...” He trails off, mumbling to himself.

You're lost. You have little to no idea what he's talking about at this point. “Well, that's fascinating Skull Kid. Really. You know you've been locked up in here for going on two days now, right?” He pauses, looking up. After several moments of contemplation he responds. “I must of lost track of time.” You grin, at least he hasn't been in here moping around all day. “Have you eaten?” He nods. “Fulvia brought me some food... uh, that might have been yesterday, actually.” As you thought. “Well how about we go find some lunch and then retreat to the library? You'll likely be able to find a book in Rhynian, or the Interlingua as you call it, that will further illuminate the properties and uses of vys.”

He flips off that device of his and pushes away from his desk, getting up and stretching out laboriously. “That sounds like a fine idea, Mik. A find idea.” You nod, and stand yourself. With Skull Kid in tow you make your way out of his room and back into the main living area of the temple. You could likely dig up some grub somewhere if you looked around, but on the other hand you could also take this as an opportunity to explore the town a bit. You saw an inn last night that looked to be rather popular, and there was a bakery on the way into town...

You reach into your cloak, withdrawing one of the magical lanterns you retrieved from Fort Longia before delving into the mineshaft. “This lantern actually sounds vaguely similar to what you're attempting to make. I know you can't see it, but it draws vys from the surroundings and then channels the collected vys to create light and just the slightest amount of heat.” As you watch, the various lenses on his helmet shut themselves and others blink open. Then those shut themselves and yet others wink open.

Finally, all of his various sensors and lenses blink open at once. “You're right, I can't see anything entering the lamp. I can see the results though, and there's some weird gravitational and magnetic anomalies surrounding the lamp. It's actually weird, there is heat and light surrounding it but the actual core of the lamp is just completely devoid of anything. Like a black hole or a perfect vacuum. Anyway, it might help in my research, or even provide me with a power source if I can successfully dissect it.”

You've got very little idea what he just said. You're fairly familiar with gravity and magnetism, in that you understand things fall to the ground because of gravity and certain materials attract iron. Beyond that you don't quite understand what a gravitational or magnetic anomaly would constitute. “I left some research notes with Fulvia to decode that might contain more information about how the Rhynians generate vys to power their facilities and constructs, she ought to have finished decoding them by now, or at the very least made good progress.” He nods his head. “I'll have to ask her about them, but what exactly makes Rhynian notes so special? I mean, shouldn't I be able to just waltz into the library and find the information I need?”

Ah, right. He doesn't know about your world's history. “The Rhynian Empire was, compared to today, amazingly technologically advanced. As in, on par with your world as it existed when we left.” That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but he doesn't know that. “When the Empire fell, much of the knowledge necessary to recreate its technology was lost. Thus, research notes from the old Empire are incredibly valuable. Especially in the right hands.” He nods, slowly. “I see, what caused the Empire to fall?” You shrug your shoulders. “Nobody is quite sure, but the general consensus is a plague of some sort sweeping through the Empire. My own findings seem to support this, but I was told by a spirit that the Rhynians were cast down by their gods for overstepping their reach. The two accounts aren't really contradictory, come to think of it.”

He nods his head slowly. “It's going to be weird getting used to everyone talking about 'the Gods' instead of just 'God'.” You shrug your shoulders. “I'm sure some faiths in this world are monotheistic, various heresies have arisen within my own people attempting to fuse Pani and Surya into one two-faced deity or to claim they're merely two facets of the same creator. Personally, I find such conjecture offensive. My own experiences have proven the existence of at least one god, a withered husk that has rooted itself in my mind and slowly corrupts my sanity. If a god's corpse still influences the world how could those two gods still living not?”

Skull Kid stares at you for a long time in silence as the two of you explore the temple in search of kitchens or a dining area. In the end, he simply shakes his head and doesn't comment on it. Finally, you reach the gardens and notice smoke. Veering off to explore, you find a handful of monks sitting around a fire pit with two plucked chickens roasting on a spit above the fire. One monk is lathering them in a mix of herbs and various fruit juices from what you can tell, while a woman sits on a stone tuning an oud. Could that be Sister Balik?

One of them whom you vaguely recognize waves to you cheerily. It takes you a moment to recognize Brother Aziz. “Mikhael! How have you been enjoying your time here? I heard you've spent most of it unconscious.” That wouldn't be inaccurate, actually. You smile. “I've been enjoying it quite well, I've already made significant progress in the art of healing. In fact, I'd go so far as to compare myself in skill to a Grandmaster within that particular field.” Aziz nods, gesturing to two large stones that are currently unoccupied. “Would you and your... friend? Construct?” He waves a hand dismissively. “Like to join us for lunch? I don't suppose it eats, but I'm sure you've got an appetite.”

You glance over to Skull Kid. The entire point of this outing was to get him some food and discuss magic. If he's forced to abstain from eating just to keep up the illusion of being a construct, that sort of defeats the point.

>Meh, screw the illusion. Reveal that he's actually a human.

You sit down at the fire pit, Skull Kid reluctantly following suit. “Actually, this construct it somewhat unique in that he's made at least partially from organic parts. He was the Rhynians attempt at creating a construct that generated its own vys instead of needing a massive generator strapped to it. The attempt ultimately failed, but the construct has continued to function and he's more or less self-healing. As a result of being unable to generate his own vys, he needs to eat in order to sustain himself.”

That's a pretty bold claim, but you gesture for Skull Kid to lift his helmet. He seems hesitant at first, but does so at your request. Some of the monks reel back in horror, others lean in to get a better look. You really turn on your salesman's charm, even channeling a bit of vys to make yourself seem more charismatic and convincing. “As you can see-” You run a finger along the wires leading from Skull Kid's helmet into his empty eye sockets. “The helmet is the control center where most of the decision making takes place, in addition to providing sensory data. I'm unsure if there is an artificial brain or a processing center inside the skull, he's understandably reluctant to be dissected.”

You move on to the braces and pumps that extend along his shoulders and arms. “The skeletal structure is reinforced with metal, and the muscular tissue is enhanced, these pumps provide support and additional strength to the limbs.” You gesture to the massive exhaust vent protruding out of his side. “This vent allows heat generated by his internal workings to escape in times of elevated activity.” Finally you grasp one of the long cords that act as Skull Kid's 'hair' “Finally, these cords allowed him to interact with Rhynian devices before the collapse of the Empire.”

(1/2)
>>
You seem to have won them over. One of the monks, an man with only the barest wisp of a beard, speaks up. “How much would you ask if I wished to buy such a contraption?” You grin. “Oh, I'm afraid he's not for sale. As a one of a kind creation he's priceless, and he's far too useful to just pawn off.” They seem to have bought your explanation, and conversation returns. Sister Balik, who had listened to the entire exchange with a sort of detached interest, plucks up a tune on her oud. It's a pleasing, relaxed melody. You think your recognize it from time spent in opium dens, brothels, and hookah bars, though you couldn't put a name to it.

You begin to explain the basics of vys and its flow, how it is produced by all living things and excess is exuded into the surroundings. You touch on the basics of channeling vys and using it to cast spells, but don't go into detail. Most of it seems to go far above Skull Kid's head, and you get some odd looks for explaining magic to a construct you've already professed isn't able to cast, but by and large nobody questions you about it. When you've finished Aziz quickly cuts in before you can go off on another tangent. “Tell me, Mikhael. Would you be able to teach us about that game you demonstrated yesterday?”

You wave a hand, and a figure not unlike the shrine spirit after you fed it steps out of the fire. Its body is made from black ash, and its six spare limbs are simply roiling frame barely kept in check by our magic. Opposed to the figure a small spear-wielding warrior made of and armored in ice appears, a big, bulky shield in hand. It braces the shield in front of itself and slides its spear through a gap, stepping towards the fire spirit cautiously. The crowd looks on enraptured as the two begin to duel it out, the flame spirit sending burst if fire at the ice warrior, who blocks the attacks with his shield and works on closing the distance.

You note that Sister Balik has shifted her playing to a far more dramatic tune, complimenting the duel quiet nicely. “Now, a rulebook has been put together and is being printed in Anthus, but unfortunately I don't have a copy with me. The gist of it is thus: each figure is worth one 'point'. Both opponents need to agree what constitutes a one point figure, but giant hulking monstrosities of stone and metal are probably worth more than one point. A game will be a 'five hundred point' or a 'one thousand point' game, indicating the number of allowed figures on either side. Using the five hundred point game as an example, each opponent would get five hundred figures.”

The spearman jabs at the spirit and the tip of his spear buries itself deep inside the spirit's abdomen. Flames whip along the spear, quickly melting the blade, but a wound has been dealt regardless. Still, now the spearman is more or less weaponless, he's essentially left with a staff and a shield. “The goal of each game is to capture your opponent's base, or to kill all of your opponent's figures. All while keeping your own base protected, of course. No figures are allowed to be added after play starts, nor is damage to terrain allowed to be repaired.”

>Shrine Spirit-Fed
Well then.
>>
The fire spirit has stepped up his attack, blasting the spearman with an almost constant stream of fire. In a fit of desperation, the ice warrior cracks the spirit over the head with the butt of his staff, sending it reeling and allowing him a moment of respite. “Really, it's intended as just a great way to meditate or just have some fun. It's a really good time and a great spectator sport, though I should mention that demonstrations like the one I did in the arena can be dangerous. I actually had some fairly severe burns on my hands from overspending my vys. The book I'm having printed is called 'Siege!' First Edition. I'll see about shipping some your way once things are off the ground.”

The fire spirit twist around, sending a ball of flame at the warrior and knocking him down. He then leaps at the warrior to try and finish the fight. The warrior raises his shield and the shoves the jagged end of his spear into the air, the momentum of the spirit as he falls on the broken edge enough to impale him completely. Unfortunately the heat of his body quickly melts through the shield, and the spearman is forced to retreat. The fire spirit, in its last fit of rage, forces itself to explode into heat and light and fire, incinerating the ice warrior completely. A draw.

Aziz shares a look with another monk, and then glances to you. “Would you mind supervising a match? I think I'd like to try out this game myself.”

You nod your ascent. “Sure, I'll officiate.” A little entertainment with your meal, what's not to love? Besides, it's not like there are a lot of rules to keep track of. Aziz and his opponent, an attractive young woman you can't profess to recognize, work together to freeze over the pond into a single, smooth sheet of ice. They then take positions on either side and set about fortifying their positions. In the mean time, the chef proclaims proudly. “The food is ready at long last! Shall we eat?” There is a general mutter of agreement, and he begins carving off thick slices of juicy chicken, another monk has apparently produced jolada rotti, a type of thin flat bread made from sorghum grains, and is filling loaves with a mixture of rice, beans, and a sauce you can't immediately identify.

After the chicken has been added the bread is wrapped into a neat little pocket and passed to the nearest person, who in turn passes it down the line. Soon everyone has a dumpling. You take a bite of your own and find it satisfactory, savory and filling, with a distinct spiciness. You're turning your attention back to the match, the preparations for which are almost complete, when you hear Skull Kid moan loudly behind you before exclaiming excitedly. “Holy shit this food is amazing! I mean, fuck. Real meat? Are these actual beans? God damn, I'm in heaven right now.”

You turn around to stare at him. Everyone else does too, save the chef that is. The chef simply smiles beatifically. You hear a few muttered. “What did he say?” “Why did he just moan?” “Can constructs even feel sexual pleasure?” That spirals into a whole other conversation, but the chef seems to silence the room when he exclaims proudly in Rhynian. “Only the finest of produce products, my friend! Only the finest! I am glad you are having the enjoyment!” Huh, his Rhynian is pretty good, if a little clumsy.

(1/3 or 4)
>>
Skull Kid seems completely oblivious to the world around him, simply munching away with an almost religious reverence. Attention slowly shifts back to the two vatis about to duel. Money starts changing hands, bets are placed, and then the match begins in earnest. Aziz has constructed an elaborate series of three walls surrounding his central keep. Each wall has six spiked protrusions, giving them the appearance of stars. They twist together and overlap until they reach the innermost wall, which features a sturdy gate. The keep itself is rather minimalist, simply a spindly tower. He's manned the walls with row upon row of archers, and the only troops he has to defend the gate itself are a handful of spear squads.

His opponent, the attractive Sister, has taken a much more aggressive battle plan. Her fort is little more than a single, vaguely drum-shaped keep with a gate. However, has row upon row of armored spearmen, the vast majority protected by large ice barricades or roofed siege-engines on wheels. She has a battering ram and a trebuchet as well. As expected, she takes the first move. Ordering her troops to advance. Both her and Aziz are deep in their respective meditative trances. Curiously, instead of sitting stock still as you'd expect someone to while meditating, the woman Aziz is dueling shifts her hands into a multitude of complex forms, it's almost like she's dancing, in a strange way.

(2/3)
>>
The duel turns into a brutal slog for Aziz's opponent. The woman's troops make good initial progress but as they near the walls they find themselves assaulted on all sides and are simply unable to defend themselves completely. Her solution to the issue is clever, having several squadrons form up into a sort of square formation guarded by a ice barrier on either side, but it's still not a perfect defense against Aziz's archers. Her trebuchet operators are quickly taken out by archers but the battering ram rumbles onward. The first few squads of spearmen are easily dispatched by her advancing army, but one manages to slip over the walls and progress towards her keep and others do the same, but instead of heading for her base instead harass her rear guard.

She neglected to leave any soldiers to defend, as far as you can tell. She diverts some forces to cut off the squad as it makes for her drum keep, but she's too late. Just as her battering ram rumbles up to the walls you see a little ice figurine climb to the top of her tower and start jumping up and down, waving its arms. Her base is forfeit, the battle is over.

You splash both opponents with a jet of water, startling them awake. Aziz grins a truly shit-eating grin, while his opponent simply glares at him with an intensity that could bore a hole through steel. Aziz stands, bowing elaborately. “A good match, Sister Kaur! Perhaps next time you'll not be so careless as to devote all of your force to an all out attack? Her response is immediate and vehement. “Perhaps tonight I'll wring your neck! Cocky bastard, in a real fight I'd destroy you!” One of the monks next to you rolls his eyes in an exaggerated fashion. “Aziz and Kaur, at it again. You'd think they hated each other by the way they argue.” Another monk responds neutrally. “It is simply their way, it seems to work for them.”

Well, Aziz and Kaur look like they'll be at it for some time. You turn your attention to Sister Balik. “Tell me, have you ever tried combining your skills as a musician with your skills as a Vatis?” She raises an eyebrow, subtly. She begins to pluck out a simple tune, and you feel a burst of vys as she cast a spell, metal magic you believe “You tell me.” As she says this, the tone of the oud seems to warp and distort. You feel your thoughts muddled, a haze descending as the music seems to consume your attention.

And then it simply ends as Sister Balik presses her palm flat against the strings, stopping the music. Most of the other monks are similarly enraptured, though one recovers quickly and complains. “Damn it, Balik! I hate it when you do that.” She simply smirks, paying him no mind. “It's primarily useful with metal or nature magic, but I've also used it with fire and water. When I tried earth magic, it just broke my strings.” She shrugs, utterly nonplussed. You take the opportunity to respond. “You know, I'm an aspiring musician myself.” You reach into your cloak, withdrawing your oud. One of the monks whispers. “Gods have mercy, please. Anything but that.”

You glare at the monk, committing his face to memory, before setting the oud across your lap. “Do you think you could give me lessons?” She laughs a light, airy laugh. She really doesn't seem to be all there, come to think of it. “Sure, I could give you lessons. You're already sort of infamous amongst our circle as an awful player, but anyone can play the oud with enough practice. When do you want your first lesson?”

“When do I want to start? Right now. Right here. Lets do this.” One of the monks mutters. “I want to flee to safety yet at the same time I must watch this.” Another nods his head in agreement. Sister Balik picks up her oud and positions her fingers on the strings in an odd fashion, her other hand gripping a long wooden stick you don't recognize. You heft your own oud, but she stops you before you can even so much as pluck a string. “Wait wait wait, first off. You need to learn that fingering is everything.” You hear someone snicker from amongst the monks, but don't see who. Balik ignores them.

She lowers her oud into her lap and bends over to forcefully shift your fingers into the proper position poised like snakes ready to strike above the strings. She also shoves another long wooden stick into your hand. “This is a pick, use it to pluck the strings instead of your fingers. It will prevent you from getting blisters and in addition it just produces a better, more reliable sound.” You grip the pick, but she seems to take issue with that as well, adjusting your grip on the wooden stick for several minutes before seeming satisfied. You examine the way she has you holding the pick for a moment before nodding.

You start to play, and it's awful. If slightly less awful than usual. She stops you more or less immediately. “Do you know what a cord is?” You shake your head, and she shifts her fingers into several positions on strings high up on the neck of the oud. She does this several times, allowing you to memorize the positions before she starts to play. When she plucks away at the strings a pleasing, if simplistic tune ushers forth from your instrument.
(1/2)
>>
You run through the motions of the cords she showed you, trying to memorize their positions before plucking away at your own instrument. There is a vague sort of similarity between the tune you play and her own, but you don't think hers was quite so... jarring, metallic, screech-y, off-tune, or irregularly paced. She stops you, and gives you some pointers. You end up passing most of the afternoon this way, playing a tune and then pausing to learn how you ought to play the tune. You're awful every time, every single time, but by the end of your several hour tutoring session you feel you were slightly less awful at the end than you were at the beginning.

Of course, that didn't stop every living thing in a quarter mile radius fleeing for the hills, save a few of the more masochistic monks of course. As you start to play it's like watching a mass exodus of birds on their flight north as summer approaches. You see red-tailed squirrel poke its head out of a knothole in a tree and then promptly cover its ears and duck back inside. At one point, a grasshopper commits suicide by leaping between your pick and the strings in a futile attempt to end the torture. By the end of it, Sister Balik looks mentally and physically exhausted. You think she might have lost faith in the world, or at the very least in her ability as a teacher and musician.

I don't understand. Why no one is concerned. With metal magic..she can use is to distract us and plenty. Of others.
We need expert.just to start protecting our selves.. She has found a way to attack. And no one bothered to ask about using our magic.

And we also didn't get the bonus for using a good our.
