You can’t stop smiling. Wendy said yes!

Your eyes flicker from corner to corner repeatedly. Maybe not said yes, but she definitely didn’t say no.

You’re going to have a roommate again! And, if you’re really lucky, this time she won’t kill herself by eating some of the RDX in her demolition kit. What a surprise teeth as shrapnel was.

You work at your burrito with your utensils. Wendy has set down her “sope,” because some hair has fallen into her face. She catches you staring at her as she puts her hand away.

She makes a face.

“Ugh.”

You oblige her, but only barely. You watch your food as you manipulate your fork, humming a song you haven’t heard in at least a year. You don’t know what the phrases “off key,” “out of tune,” or “melody,” are, but judging by Wendy’s face, she knows more than you.

“Oh my god, ciate. Por favor. Please. I’m begging you.”

She’s clutching her head, covering her ears with her palms.

It’s not that bad, is it? You’ll ask Karan when you get home later.

She must see your face because she looks smug and says, “If you’re going to pretend at music, at least have the decency to do it well. Listen.”

She pulls the napkin off her lap and wipes her hands with it before tossing it on the table and putting her right hand over her right ear, although you don’t know why. She starts slapping her thigh and starts singing quietly. There’s nobody in the booths next to you this late in the afternoon, but even if they were only one or two in each direction would even be able to hear.
“I work my fingers to the bone
Not a pretty little penny have I got to show
I ain’t looking for much
Just a little bit of rest by the side of the road

I lift my voice to the forces above
The lords of labor and the goddess of love
Ain’t I been a good hard working servant and son”

It only takes ten seconds. You were counting.

Wendy is...good? Like...maybe even really good. You’re not sure if you understood what she sang but you know her voice even this quiet and hushed was nothing like what you heard on the radio at your FOB or camp.

You wish you knew how to describe it.

Wendy says, looking far too proud of herself, “I thought that song felt right. What did you think?”

What did you think?

You geek the fuck out and bounce in your seat and wave your arms excitedly.

“Stop stop stop please stop someone’s going to see you and either think you’re having a seizure or you’re a child and neither of those make me look good.”

You sit on your hands. “That was really good, Wendy.”

Despite looking boastful and smug earlier Wendy’s smile now is shy, and she looks away from you as you say it, “It’s just not bad.”

“You should totally talk to the company and get a cool deal.”

Wendy shrugs and says, “I’ve thought about it but...you’ve seen what it’s like for them. At least this way I get to carry a gun.”

She looks down at her plate and lap and continues, “Besides...there’s no market for me…”

She sounds sad.

“I don’t know anything about that...but I think you’re really good!”

Wendy looks happy as she resumes eating.

“Maybe Karan can record you. That’s a thing she can do, right? You could be, like…”

Uh. What would she be like…

“Like, uh, a singing tier one or something. That would totally sell!”

“You can relax now, Michelle, I get it. Thank you,” says around her food.

You try to settle and calm down. “Does Skyler know?”

“Que? Oh...he does. He was the one who got me into it. We would go to karaoke bars after shifts. He’s really good when he’s not so fucked up and on the nod.”

“Really?”

She makes an mmhmm noise as she chews.

“But...you said you only started working like three months ago and in three months you’re already this good?”

She shrugs, “I’m good at everything I do.”

She shrugs again, speaking seriously this time, “I don’t have much else to do. Until you showed up he was more or less my only friend.”

She takes a drink off her glass of water.

“Besides. Arts are good for the soul. No recuerdo el título de la película pero…”

She checks out for a moment as she thinks, “No se. I forget. It was like a disaster or apocalypse movie or whatever and the way the survivors judged if you were infected or not was your ability to create art. Show you still have your soul or humanity or whatever, you know?”

She shrugs again and says guardedly, like you might make fun of her, “Music makes me feel like a person. Even after a busy day.”

You’re not sure how to respond to this either.

Is this Wendy opening up to you?

“It’s good you have something like that.”

Should you be worried that you don’t?

Wendy says, “I guess. Maybe.”

She’s doing a lot of shrugging at the table, “That’s just what I think. Everyone copes differently.”

Maybe a little worried.

“So...what are we doing next?”

Wendy checks the time on a watch she wears on her right wrist, “You wanted to do more shopping, didn’t you?”

“Yeah...but you didn’t seem all that into it earlier…”

“I’m feeling better now that I’ve eaten and had some drinks. Oh, oyes, que piensas pasó at the office this morning?”

You look at her vacantly.

You explain to her your grand vision of jeans, cargo pants, and sensible but fashionable clothing.

Wendy sneers, “Cargo pants. Ugh. Are you a lesbian or something?”

You frown as you consider your burrito.

“Oh, shit, you’re not actually a lesbian are you?”

“Umm…don’t think so.”

“Okay. I definitely could not have dealt with that. Everything else sounds fine, I guess, although we’re given work outfits like most to all of the time.”

She shrugs, “You could get your own pair of boots, I guess, although none of the stores here will have actual combat combat boots. Or you could be like Skyler and just wear whatever you feel like wearing. As long as it gets the job done they don’t care.”

Wendy talks a lot more when she’s in a better mood.

“Sure.”

Wendy waves for the check and says, “You weren’t as much of a tool as usual. I’ll cover it.”

“Thanks...I think…”

The waiter quickly scans her card and the two of you leave the way you came, and lean on your elbows against the railing of the floor, looking out over the ones above and below.

Wendy leads you across a whole swath of stores, from the really big department stores to the tiny little boutiques.

She was a lot more helpful than last time. Maybe even a little uncomfortably personal personal attention.

There were just as many or even more choices than at the Zoé store but unlike the Zoé store there were obviously, even for you, bad choices.

It’s a good thing all of them offered delivery service because you couldn’t carry it all in one trip in your car there were so many boxes of shoes, folded pants, shirts, jackets, gloves, boots but not the combat kind, scarves (some of them were really expensive! But...they’re really pretty too) and more.

Wendy insisted that you don’t buy, or even try on, any skirts but you begged her so she relented and you tried one on and looked in the mirror and then you understood why she said not to wear any skirts.

Your thighs and calves don’t look that bad from your perspective…

Wendy ended up getting a lot of stuff too.

You can feel Wendy examining the side of your head and skull and you turn around and stare at her until she talks.

Wendy doesn’t seem to take the bait as she says, “Hey Michelle.”

“What?”

“Pull back the hair over your ear for a second.”

You oblige her, but you’re not sure why.

You can feel her looking at it and she says, “Have you never had your ears pierced before?”
