The sun's light is rapidly dwindling; long, red rays filtering through the trees. The air has already begun to cool, the days warmth washing away with the breeze. The trees are scattered at the edge of the village- lone trees standing tall into the sky, surrounded by the stumps of their fallen brethren.

Jin sails overhead, her own excitement ruining any attempts at silence. The quiet noise of feathers on feathers as she flaps in time with her own heartbeat, gaining speed as she circles above you. An easy laugh bubbles out of your throat as you catch sight of her expression: Eyes wide, mouth pulled into a grin of childish glee.

It's easy to forget how young she is. It's easy to forget how young you are.

You flag her down before she gets too excited- and her landing's speed actually rocks you a half step forward. She pipes up as you open your mouth.
"Yes! Yes, it is time to hunt!"
She flares her wings, shuffling back and forth on your shell.
"We have been waiting! We- I have found where all the monsters hunt and sleep, yes! We can hunt anything we want!"

She's absolutely wired- face animated, eyes sparkling. You find yourself grinning back. Hunting, fighting. They're exciting. Adrenaline, your heart pounding, sweat trailing down your spine, the burning in your arms as you push yourself. It's not the kind of thing you had in your past life- and it's not the kind of thing you are willing to give up.
>>
>>34724656

Your thoughts follow the trail. This must be what Mom feels. The natural high of a predator, the sense of accomplishment as you stand over worthy prey.
She didn't try and forbid you from hunting. She sent you to arm and armour yourself, pushed you to master skills. Gave you opportunities to become stronger.

There's a swelling feeling in your chest. You snatch Jin, pulling her into a rough hug- she struggles in surprise for half a moment, before wrapping her wings around you. You want to hug Mom. To let her know, even if it's only a little, that you understand. To thank her.

The distance- physical, emotional- held between you and your human parents doesn't exist here. There's no barriers. And when you go home, for the first time in a long, long time- people will be waiting for you. Your family will be waiting for you.

You blink back tears, though you can't stop your smile. You let Jin down, placing her back onto your carapace, and she smiles up at you, blushing.
"Let's hunt, Jin. Wherever we want, whatever we want. Together, yes? And when we go home, there will be warmth waiting for us."
Her smile is brilliant, even in the fading light.
"Yes!"

We're pretty close to the village still so there shouldn't be anything TOO big roaming around.

You smile back at your feathery friend, nodding.
"Lead wherever you like, Jin. I'll follow."
She crouches low on your shell, wings spread wide before she launches her skyward. Two powerful flaps draw her into the air, and she soars into the forest before you.

Your glaive's reassuring weight rests in your hand, and you set off after her, legs churning. Your stride is incomparable to a human's- You don't tire, easily following Jin's ghostlike form through the evening air. She leads you further from the village, sparse brush thickening, trees becoming more frequent than stumps.

She changes direction, and you follow, picking your way down a hill covered in shattered stones and dotted with scraggly trees. The ground levels out and you pursue her again- the forest growing darker and lighter around you, the sun vanishing beneath the horizon, replaced with the pale burning light of the stars above.

Jin comes to rest in a tree ahead, silently landing just outside of a shattered clearing broken by a wide, moss covered hill. You let your pace bleed off, limbs falling silent as you skitter towards open air. You draw to a halt at the edge of the trees, leaning around Jin's roost and spying on the clearing. The harpy flutters down, landing lightly on your hind end, peering around you at the scene.

Rocks lie scattered throughout the area, solid piles of stone left throughout- You glare. It feels unnatural. Like the ruins, like this isn't a place where nature has simply taken its course. The circle of trees looks deliberate; brush and grass have long started to reclaim the clearing, but only a few saplings have started to make themselves known within.
>>
>>34726322
I don't think we have palpi. Just our human arms.
>>
>>34726391
Your gaze completes its circle of the area, resting on the hill- The face is covered in moss, but is undoubtedly stone, extending back and into the forest. A man made cave sits at its centre, a craggy rectangle marking the entrance.

You tighten your grip on the haft of your weapon, letting out a little hiss.
"Jin- Jin, who lives here?"
Her whisper is soft, leaning forward to speak directly into your ear.
"There is noone here, yes. A pack of wolves has taken it as a den- All the harpies keep watch to chase them away from the village when they get too hungry."
"But you can't fight them in the cave."
"Mhm."
"Why doesn't the guild take care of them?"
"The guild only moves when someone has been hurt- or if there is money to be made, yes?"
She puffs herself up a bit, clearly proud.
"We have stopped them from hurting anyone. The guild will not act, and the village will not pay, yes."

You shake your head, a wry smile across your face.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid."
"Yes."
You feel your whole body react, coming alive as your ready your glaive. You can pick out the smell of the plants crushed beneath your armoured limbs, the heavy scent of blood and animals all over the clearing. The silence as the forest holds its breath, waiting for violence to erupt. Your eyesight even seems to sharpen, focussing.

"Then let's take care of them, yes?"
You sidle into the clearing, weapon low, and Jin takes flight...

You stalk silently into the ring of trees, keeping your distance from the cave as you set about working. You start from the stones, working to set a few web traps- but to your frustration, the rocks are weirdly slick, and the webbing ends up a tangled mess on the ground. You shoot it a dirty look, and move to try and use the brush dotting the clearing.

Your stomach growls angrily at you- You haven't eaten since breakfast. Pangs of hunger reach all through your form, and worse yet: You're out of web. You clutch at your weapon. You'll have to do without.

You advance on the entrance, scuffing at the ground in your best attempt at pretending to be smaller. You make a few pitiful mewling noises, and Jin joins in, letting out a choked squawk and flapping loudly.

The response is immediate.
Wolves pour out of the cave, followed leisurely by one standing head and shoulders over his fellows. Spiked black fur, with the occasional splashes of white or grey mark all of the beasts, though their size is nothing like the lightning spewing monstrosity you faced before. The wolves stand uneasily, facing you down- Jin has utterly vanished, whisper silent wings carrying her into the sky.

The largest wolf breaks the stand-off, releasing a forceful bark and snapping its jaws tight. The creatures filter forwards, making to surround you.

You have no intention of being treated like some common animal.
>>
>>34727290
You surge towards the nearest wolves, two steps bringing you close enough to smell their rancid breath. One leaps in surprise, the other freezing in place at your rush. It doesn't matter. You relinquish your glaive to one hand, the other snapping out in a terrifying backhand- it catches the wolf bodily in the side, the snap of bone accompanying it's yelp as you sent it tumbling through the air.

The other you simply overrun, stabbing and crushing it with your passing, breaking the wolves circle and turning back on them. A third wolf springs for your back as your turn, and is intercepted midair by the harpy, her razor sharp talons sinking into its neck hurling it gurgling back to the ground.

The rest of the wolves advance on you, snarling, the alpha following up the remains of it's pack as they close on you. They dart between the stones, seeking to strike at you from every angle.

>>
>>34728055
>>34728068
No, I just thought that soy beans had more protein per weight than other beans, and would be cheaper and easier to acquire in more settled lands and cities.

I checked, and turns out that I was wrong. Fava beans have more protein per weight than soy.
>>
>>34728183
Obviously, if we go the Jin route we aren't going to be having very many children. Hence the 'childless' part. Make sense now?

Jin is ours. We can't let her join some other... anything. She's sticking with us for life. She is already the waifu you will come to accept this in time.

The answer to travel food is jerky and pemmican.

Fava beans and soy can come if we ever get chinese food. Which is goddamn delicious.
>>
>>34728258
Anon, the more you insist this, the more I will be against it.
I'd much prefer just being friends with jin and going off and having adventures best friends have.
No need to confuse positive attention with romance.
>>
>>34728277
actually that's another anon, anon. He's just agreeing with me.

I would be fine with Jin just being our bro, but that's not what my vote's gonna be if REQM ever lets us decide.
>>
>>34728240
No, because the problem with fava beans is that they have to be boiled to be consumed, and boiling reduces the amount of protein by nearly 70%.

Though beans, once dried, can generally keep for a year. That should be a consideration if we go into a place where game is going to be limited, what with our increased energy and protein requirements.

I think he's saying we won't have a pet so it won't matter, all our attention will go to Jin.

In my opinion we'll need a partner who will keep up with our progress, which discounts humans. Unlike our mother who stayed as a widow, we're going to advance at least once more before our progress starts to plane out. Only someone determined to keep up with us could be our partner, which at this point means Jin, anyone else will be a liability or a househusband.
>>
>>34728314

Personally, I think that we shouldn't bother with waifus/husbandos or any arguments related to those until we're older.

Let's wait until we've got a few timeskips under our belt before we think about that kind of thing.

Anon, please don't throw around real life numbers when referring to an imaginary quest involving a non-existant woman being reincarnated as an equally non existent spider person. It's like trying to apply anime physics to the real world.

If you want to argue this, get a better proposition. Like the people who are saying that 16 days old is too young to be thinking about this, which I agree with.

>>
>>34728626
They use the much more pleasant term "waifu".
Which means they want to get the character and do sexual things to them.

Otherwise they'd want to be friends.
>>
>>34728622
Looks pretty gender neutral to me? The parantheses was obviously because femme fatale is a well-known term and the one used in the (shitty by the way) Matt Cauthon comparison, not signaling anons' preferences.
>>
>>34728650
why not say prince(ess) charmings then?
>>
>>34728645
Waifu implies a more than friends relationship but I don't think anyone has implied sex.
>>
>>34728674
Because the character that was referenced has nothing to do with prince charmings and instead with femme fatales. It was a joke relating to the referenced figure.
>>
>>34728645
Other than the fact that it would be physically impossible to quote unquote "Fuck Jin/ Jump her bones"...

>>

>>
>>34728603
>Like the people who are saying that 16 days old is too young to be thinking about this, which I agree with.
I disagree with this as an Arachne is a full adult at 1 month, and we also are mentally 27 years old.
I would also put forward our vastly accelerated evolution as having kickstarted our adult hormone production.
>>
>>34728674
Because they were comparing our eventual LI directly with the LI of Matt Cauthon who (I guess, I can't remember since I quit reading WoT a decade ago) was a femme fatale, and therefore that term would be most appropriate, I imagine.
>>
>>34728698
No I think it's just a straight up relationship. But feel free to remain paranoid. This isn't a smut quest.
>>
I'd like to thank the GM for putting up with our bullshit and insanity. You run an amazing quest, please ignore our collective stupidity, our arguing means your doing a good job at development and we're invested in the characters.
>>
>>34728603
the 16 day thing is pretty creepy.
And the immediately going for the first attention thing is also kind of creepy.
>>
>>34728724
so an entirely non-sexual relationship indistinguishable from normal friendship is waifuing?
Then yes, I too would like to remain friends with jin.
>>
>>34728695
Anon, it's both possible and gross.
>>
>>34728706
I would argue that being mentally 27 years old means that we can easily control our hormones due to having already mastered them in our previous life and therefore have no reason to think about waifus/husbandos.
>>
>>34728706
Oddly enough we haven't seen much of anything hormone related going on yet. Either because REQM just hasn't included it yet, or because arachne funtion differently than we'd expect.

Though we have been seeing an increase in our battle lust, maybe that's the arachne version of puberty?

I haver ever only seen one exception, and its still not done yet
>>
>>34728787
>being mentally 27 years old means that we can easily control our hormones
Control our thoughts, yes.
I'm just saying that, as having already reached the halfway point to full adulthood (since Arachne are adults at the end of a month), combined with our abnormally accelerated development (Mom said it usually takes years for a Forest Arachne to evolve), I think right now is a reasonable time for us to have hit Arachne puberty.
>>
>>34728827

I'm not saying we should.

>I just want random thoughts of "Oh, he's cute" to come up from our teenage Arachne hormones
No. Stop.
Telling us about random "ohsocute" our character allegedly feels without the readers getting any input is the worst possible thing you can do. Others have done it, it leads to shitstorms, and rightfully so.
A Qm should not tell the players what their characters preferences are, unless he wnats to take the romance aspect completly out of their hands.
>>

The forest would have to be kept wild, though, so that the young can go hunting, get into fights with monsters, and evolve.
>>
You sidestep, moving around a stone and meeting your prey head on. The wolf draws up short, trying to back away, and you casually bring your weapon down, blade cracking into its skull, driving down to twitch in the dirt. Jin swoops down across from you, dipping out of sight behind the stones. She reappears moments later, claws trailing blood as she returns to flight.

You circle the stones, the pitter-patter of paws against the ground giving away the wolves positions as surely as seeing them would. You bare your fangs, a ferocious smile etched over your face. You slip around a stone spire, appearing behind a shocked wolf, one leg lashing out and driving through it- the creature wheezes, pitching over into the grass.

You can feel a pair closing on you from behind- one larger, one smaller- and you hold your glaive low and ready. A wolf launches itself as soon as it rounds the corner, and you neatly intercept it with a thrust, gutting the monster, a ruby trail marking its arc to the ground. The Alpha throws itself towards the gap beneath your body, but you simply spin your weapon sideways, driving the haft crosswise into it, crushing its spine and leaving it twitching in the dirt.

The last wolf bolts for the trees, leaping over bushes and smaller stones as it closes on the forest- And between the trees of its safe haven, Jin appears, wings unfurled and talons bared. The wolf twists to change direction, and the harpy seizes it, claws driving deep into its flesh and bearing it to the ground. She stands atop, tear at it until its movement draws to a stop.
>>
>>34729333

She looks around the clearing, folding her wings as she steadies herself atop her bloodied perch. A satisfied smile works its way across her face. She hops to the ground, walking easily towards you, her grin infectious.
"We won! They even ran, rather than face us, yes!"
The excited look is back, pride writ on her features. Her cheeks are flushed, eyes catching the starlight as she moves towards you. You step over the alpha's body, easily clearing the corpse, picking your companion up to return her to her usual perch.

She interrupts you, speaking up as you hold her.
"You- You're amazing, yes. You're special, Lyra."
Your face floods- bright red blush spreading all the way to your neck.
"I- I'm not- it's just- I-"
"You're strong. You can do things we cannot, even with the others."
"I- There's lots of things I can't do, Jin."
"Hn. You fought the wolves, yes. You saved Rie."
"You did both of those, too."
"I cannot fight them. Not like you do. Not like this."
"And I can't fly, Jin. We are different species, yes? What you can do, what I can do, those are different things. But we can work together, yes? We can be more than just alone."

Jin's smile is small, shy, creeping across her face alongside a spreading blush at the compliment. She looks up, meeting your eyes, expression serious.
"I will be strong, yes. Mother says- Mother says that you will leave the forest, like your mother did before."
She clears her throat, trying to find words while her cheeks burn.
"When you- when you go, so will we. You are not allowed to leave me behind, yes?"

I don't really care about whether they agree or not, this is obviously more about Jin wanting to reaffirm her friendship with us and her growth than the actual going on travels, I sincerely doubt she's worried about her family's opinion - I mean, won't she be adult enough to decide for herself at that point anyway? Why would we value their opinions over hers?

Anything but promising just seems really weird to me.
>>
>>34729581
>and much more time effecient.
Since they probably serve normal human-size portions, it would be far less efficient for an apex predator that can eat half a deer in a single sitting.

Also, it's a long journey from our nest.
>>
>>34729606
It's weird to me NOT running it by family.
Family obligations are huge and come first, yo.
>>
>>34729362
>I promise I'll take you with me
>Clean up the wolves, get ready to go.

I say we get the wolves and go, best not to attract anything very dangerous by staying and looking around.
>>
>>34729660
>family over self-realization
Maybe if they were living in untamed wilds scrambling to forage enough to survive the winter or something, but as it is, I don't see it.
>>
>>34729654
pff, we can just order like six meals.
And because it's a long journey is why we should take advantage of the inn when we have it.
Why go to the big city if you're going to eat the same beans and steak as you always do on the trail?
>>
>>34729688
We have disagreements on base values, then. Family is huge.
>>
>>34729689
Did it occur to you that as a giant spider who prefers raw meat, we might not like anything they serve ?
>>
>>34729641
>I say we get the wolves and go, best not to attract anything very dangerous by staying and looking around.

Every other time we've attracted something like this, it's turned out well for us. This forest has a delivery service that would put Dominoes to shame.

Dinner and loot delivered in 30 minutes or less!
>>
>>34729713
It occurred to me that we haven't even tried it yet to see if we like it, so saying we prefer one or the other is really reaching.
Who knows, maybe cooking meat makes it ten times more delicious.
>>
>>34729660
We're not eloping, we just agreed that we take her with us one way or the other. We still tell her family of course, just in the unlikely case they say no, it won'T deter us.
>>
>>34729362
>I promise I'll take you with me

>Investigate the cave
>>
>>34729660
Promising to take her with us doesn't mean we wont ask her mother... it just means the decision is made... before we ask her.
>>
>>34729742
>so saying we prefer one or the other is really reaching
It was clarified last thread that raw meat is the most effective and natural food for us. So as far as we have preferences, we prefer raw meat.
>>
>>34729729
But do you want to tell Mother that we DELIBERATELY seeked out a stronger monster to fight?
>>
>>34729689
>Why go to the big city if you're going to eat the same beans and steak as you always do on the trail?
To save money to buy that 'Mage Council-approved Advanced Wizarding Theory and Principles, 17th Edition' for Sara and 'Tolerand's Fashions of the Royalty and Rich' for Elle.

>>34729742
We did try the candy, and found sugar to no longer be that tasty to us.
>>
>>34729713
>>34729742
>>34729689
>>34729689
I defiantly think we should try it. Might be nice, might be crap, but we won't know till we visit the inn and find out.

Dinner is set for tonight, who wants to visit for breakfast tomorrow?
>>
>>34729689
Why are you obsessed with the inn?
>>
>>34729783
Actually, that was just meat in general that was clarified. You know, over candy.
>>
>>34729801
Because it's a big part of human settlements, sells food that might be delicious, is full of interesting people, potential plot hooks, and the salt of the town?

That and there's very little reason not to try it at least once.
>>
Back and counting!
>>
>>34729784
Sought, not seeked.

Also not what he was saying at all, since it would be the one seeking us out rather than the other way around.
>>
>>34729796
It'd be mighty convenient.
>>
>>34729803
>We'll just say you need a large amount of food. Raw meat is best
There I actually dug it up from the las thread for you.
>>
>>34729834
The main thing you're missing is that it's a human building, can our big fat spider butt even FIT?
>>
>>34729872
Another thing I want to find out by visiting it.
>>
>>34729861

>It's definitely delicious- candi is something you've missed- but not as satisfying as a hunk of game.

>Or you might just be hungry. It's hard to tell.
Its kinda implied that candy was delicious, and that Lyra was just crazy hungry
>>
>>34729872
That's a good point. I think the inn discussion is tabled for now until we get a look at the door.
>>
>>34729847
>Sought, not seeked.

FUCK. I knew there was something wrong with that.
>>
>>34729909
It even says game is better in your own qoute.
Its not like we can't find anything else tasty, the argument was what our preferences are as far as we know, and its raw meat, for now.
>>
Promises, rocks and a cave.
We'll make a wolf pile, too. no need to waste time.
>>
>>34729955
But how best do you prepare said raw meat?
>>
>>34729660
The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the comb.
>>
>>34729999
smoked? dried in cinder/salt?
>>
>>34730236
These are both good, but I was also wondering things like spicing and marinades.
Hell, we already sorta do marinades.
>>
>>34730260
We need to figure out if this world has BBQ sauce, if not we need to invent A1!
>>
>>34730705
I need to remember to ask whether we prefer melted or unmelted food. Then we can tweak variables like how much BBQ should go on something before melting.
>>
>>34730775
The best of all worlds maybe? The meat could be marinated then covered with a spice before charcoal grilled for that flavor but taken off while it's still rare.
>>
>>34730775
>>34730922
I bet our venom would break down the meat just enough to make it really tender.
>>
>This week on Chitin Chef, I'll be showing you a quick and easy way to get the maximum flavor out of your owlbear steaks.

>'Mage Council-approved Advanced Wizarding Theory and Principles, 17th Edition'
I like how you think anon
>>
>>34730922
You're going a little nuts there anon, you might need to slow down.
But yes, many of those things would probably be delicious.
>>
>>34731021
>Next time we'll be showing how to get the most out of travel rations without sacrificing flavour.
>>
>>34730922
Marinating the meat with a good rub would add flavor, but remember all of that stuff stays on the surface, which is why it's good for humans, cause that's the part that we taste first.

It would still add some nice flavor to our meals, but probably wouldn't be as effective on spiders as it is for humans.

Besides hasn't it been mentioned that we can eat and enjoy normal solid food? If we're going through this much trouble, why wouldn't we just eat the elk stake as a stake, and then have another elk smoothie on the side?

Now that's the best of both worlds
>>
>>34731135
>steak.
Wow, I didn't catch that the first time around
>>
>>34731135
There's no reason not to try to perfect meat smoothies. It's a whole new culinary field for us.
>>
You pull Jin close without thinking about it, holding her tight, an awkward sort of hug.
"I promise, Jin. I won't go alone. No matter where."
Jin makes her best attempt at returning the hug, leaning into your chest, enveloping you with her wings. Her voice is muffled by your shirt as she tries to respond.
"I will be strong. I'll go with you, yes. Beneath any stars."
You pat her head gently, running your hand over her hair, the feathered tufts protruding, and her breath gradually evens, though she clings to you no less tightly.

You twist, placing her back in her usual spot, favouring her with a small smile.
"There's still work before we get to eat, yes?"
"Mhm." She nods, and you set about your work.

You pile up the wolves- Though you can't actually wrap them. You wind up entangling them in the mess you made with your attempted trap. You'll have to drag them back, when you're done looking around.

You step up to the stones, leaning down to inspect them as best you can. The moon peeks over the treetops, silver light sparkling off the rocks surface- a touch confirms: They're actually wet, a slow weeping, water running over their surface. There's no cracks; the rocks themselves are exuding water- Maybe the elemental stones the smith mentioned?

You stand tall, turning to look at the shadowed cave, closing in its wide entrance. The interior is the same- crudely carved, but not remotely natural. Crunched bones, shredded pelts, the remains of the packs food litters the floor as you continue in. You pass a few supports, wide trunks and bars of wood lining the walls to hold back nature. One holds the shattered leftovers of a lantern.
>>
>>34730705
A1is shit tier
use bull's-eye
>>
>>34731240
The floor slopes, leading deeper into the structure, curving slowly underground. It's a mine, of some sort. You make a note to tell the village- Whether it's metals or elemental stones, there's probably a dearth of value in the chambers. They'll probably have to clearcut themselves a road- not to mention hiring adventurers to prevent more creatures from making their homes in its depths.

In any case, it's something for tomorrow.

You return to the surface, grabbing your limp pile of wolves and setting course for the village, carving a shallow furrow into the dirt as you travel. Jin returns to the skies, leading you around hungry creatures, and you make good time back to the village, arriving while the moon is still making its way above the trees.

Dinner is a messy affair. Jin eats bits at a time, chewing a wolf's limbs till her stomach is satisfied. You, on the other hand, shovel game into your face as fast as you can chew. You somehow doubt an arachne can go as long as a human without food. Or maybe it's because you're growing, or because you're using too much silk?

It hardly matters. You polish off 3 wolves on your own, taking care to strip their fur before you set into them. With full stomachs, you both stagger into the cabin- lights are dimmed, and the slow, methodical breathing reveals Jin's family to be fast asleep. You pull a wide blanket from your travel pack, splaying yourself across the floor, The harpy curling on your shell with her own silk blanket wrapped around her like a nest. It isn't long before you both join the others in slumber.

_________________________________________________________
>>
>>34731259
A surprised squawk rouses you- blinking sleepily in the morning light, it takes you a moment to recognize where you are.

This is Jin's cabin, not the nest. There's a moment of loneliness, and you wish you'd woken up with your family, but you push it back. You'll see them soon enough. You look around for the source of noise, gaze settling on Jin's mom, standing atop a round bed with shock written over her features. You follow the path of her eyes, twisting to look at your sleeping companion.

Jin has flopped her way free of her 'nest' overnight, wings half unfurled across your shell, drooling freely atop it. Of course, her mother's surprise has less to do with her daughter's lax sleeping habits, and more to do with the fact that she's grown a foot overnight, wings widening to match her stature- even her talons are far larger. The white into fading brown pattern on her fellows has been replaced- the light shade of brown now fades into a speckled pattern of grey and white, spots like stars dotting her wings and legs.

Despite her shock, Lia rallies quickly, waking her daughter and checking on her.

For her part, Jin is rather lax about the whole thing.
"Even for a harpy- this is fast, Jinni." Lia glances towards you as she speaks.
"Nothing like Lyra, mind- but still-"
"It is fine, yes? I will be stronger."
"That's hardly the issue, hatchling."
>>
>>34731283
The younger harpy plays with her wings, admiring the spots.
She speaks up, more to you than her worried mother.
"I like them, yes," she says, flaring them wide. "They're beautiful."
Her mother sighs, smiling lopsidedly.
"They are, yes. What were you doing last night that I woke up to a larger daughter?"
"We went hunting, yes."

Lia is wearing the very same expression Mom did when you came back with the bear.
Is it a mom thing, or did one teach the other?

"What were you hunting, Jinni.
"We lead Lyra to the wolves- the ones in the cave, yes. They were weak, and easy prey."
"Hnn. Then you were already at the edge? I need to talk to Nialla- are your sisters close, as well?" she says as she turns to you.
"I- ah, don't know. Aria does a lot of hunting, and Sara does a lot of magic? Would that matter?"
"I'm not sure- this is changing all sorts of things. We'll have to look into it. Why don't you two head into town, yes? I'm sure there's all sorts of things you need to do. I'll get a message written up for you to take home, yes,"

You stand outside the cabin, Jin perched behind you, still hypnotised by her new patterned feathers, as you ponder how to spend the morning.

>Check on the smith? It's kind of early, though.
>Talk to the trader and adventurers about the mine you found?
>Maybe grab a breakfast at the inn?

>>34731259
How do arachne sleep? Does their front end kinda bend forward or something so they can lay on the ground? Do they have use special sleeping platforms so it's lie sleeping on a table? Or do they just kinda settle down and curl in and the human portion of the body stays upright?

I know this is rather nitpicky, but it's been bothering me for a while now.

Their spines can bend 270 degrees, so they sleep however they want.

Just like centaurs.

Now would be the time for breakfast, as hunting would take the better part of the day.
>Maybe grab a breakfast at the inn?
Though, what we should really get on is

Once both of those are done, we can see if the smith is ready.

So basically all three, in reverse order, as the day goes on

All over, honestly.
Lyra pull her legs in close and either props herself on something- usually sara or jin, or a pile of blankets.
Sometimes she spreads her legs out as best she can, or curls them beneath her, and lies on her side.

Aria lies backwards over her spider half, which tends to result in a lot of snoring.

>>
>>34732168
not by then, but shortly after we get back.
>>
You step out into the dawn, bird shaped back ornament in place, and head into the town.

There's a few people up and about already- The ring of the forge can be heard throughout, black puffs of smoke working clear of the building. You'll need to weave yourself an undercoat sometime today. A few women are sweeping the cobblestones clear, and they do a double take after waving, staring at the giggling harpy who returns each wave with a full flap of her wing, showing off the star-like spackled pattern.

You move to get your self-assigned work done first- If you're going to pay for food, you're going to sit and properly enjoy it. The trading post is locked up, a note hanging on the door promising a swift return. You head towards the guild building, nodding to the sword-wielder, off guard duty and smoking a pipe in the yard. His eyebrows raise as he spots Jin, though he refrains from commenting.

You push into the guild, and find Theresa bargaining furiously with a middle aged man wielding a thick pad of paper.
"I can offer half payment now, and half when we reach the city proper-"
"If we do it like that, there's no guarantee of sale. What happens when you can't pay us?"
"No bloody guarantee? Don't faff about with me Craig- You think I can't move entire spools of arachne silk?"
"Well, what happens if the market is already flush?"
"Already flush with silk that comes exclusively from the forest arachne, who don't leave the forest, and barely even come into town."
"There was that one who left-"
"What, the adventurer? She went ruin diving, she didn't go into the city and throw silk markets into madness."
>>
>>34732168
Doesn't matter. We're still a rare variant, while she'll just be normal or a subclass of some sort.
We're still better XD
>>
>>34732232
The man sighs dramatically, marking a few things down on paper.
"Fine, fine. Regular rate. And with money and goods coming back, we'll waive the return trip."
The two shake firmly, sealing their contract.
"I need to move to another outpost already. Have I won against you even once?"
"You need a position of strength to win a negotiation, Craig. Shoulda pushed with rumours of missing caravans or something."
"I'll keep it in mind, for next time."
"Oh- You've got guests. Good morning Miss Lyra, and- Jin?! You- what?"

"Good morning, Miss Theresa."
"I am big now! Not as big as Lyra, but I am not finished yet, yes."
Theresa gives her a look of disbelief.
"Does your mother know yet?"
"Yes, yes. She spent the morning worrying, but we are fine."
She shakes her head, and makes to move before you catch her arm. She gives you a questioning look, but waits for you to speak up.

"Ah- Actually, I wanted to speak to the guild as well as you, Miss Theresa."
The man she called Craig shuffles his papers, nodding at you.
"Jin and I went hunting last night- We tracked down a pack of wolves she said were living near town-"
"Yes. They're something of a nuisance, but not enough to mobilize. If they're gone, that makes our job that much easier. You have our thanks."
"Hn. The thing is- The cave they were using, it was man-made, yes?"

They both chime in at the same time.
"What? It's- what?"
"It was a mine- the supports are still their, and a few broken lanterns. I couldn't tell what was being mined, but- The rocks outside were producing water, yes? There were no cracks on them, but it flowed everywhere."
>>
>>34732249
The two look excitedly at each other.
"Do you think?"
"Maybe an old stone mine?"
"It must have been one of the forest races if she could fit- the old human ones were made small to stop them from getting in-"
"We'll have to check it out- a steady supply means Mikhael could produce all sorts of things- We could double the size of the town with workers, easily."

Jin chimes in from behind.
"I can show you where it is, yes. There is a only clearing in the forest."
The man looks smugly towards Theresa.
"Well- The woods are fairly dangerous, right? Workers disappear all the time-"
"Craig, trying to use negotiation tactics I told you about minutes ago isn't going to go well-"

You leave the two to their bickering, slipping out, following your nose to the centre of town, straight to the wide doors of the inn.

>>
>>34732296

As I read this, all I can think of is 'What have We Done?' Between the single large shipment of various goods, the mentioning of a potential sustained Silk trade And the Old Mine... This town is about to see a boom.... And most certainly a massive crash... The only way the could avoid the long term dangers is to heavily regulate the quantities of the rare and exotic items which they are most likely going to try to flood the market with...

But that is not our concern. So long as we get our Armour and the presents for our family...
Maybe the town will get lucky and Theresa and Mikheal are very good at economics and have an exceptional grasp on market theory....

Also, Excellent thread REQM, looking forward to the next...
>>
>>34732515
Eh, it'll be fine. Boom/bust cycles are far away and indistinct.
>>
>>34732512
I don't think she's been as protective as we have.
Remember, red is defensive and we only became red due to a several things we've done and I don't think our sister has done anything similar.

Taking on the lightning wolf so it wouldn't go for Jin and rescuing that moth girl were two of the special conditions, IIRC, and we don't know if our sister has had any similar experiences.

Given that mother doesn't complain about her and that rare variants are called that for a reason; I'd say that she will either get a different rare variant or not be a rare variant at all.

I hope she is one, but not red. That's ours and if she has been having off-screen adventures and I was in OP's position, I wouldn't give her the same kind of variant as the MC.

Lyra strips the bones clean, and definitely prefers solid food- she doesn't have a problem draining, its just a habit from being human.
The boys and sometimes mom crunch bones and eat marrow.

>>34732515
You're vastly overestimating the amount of goods. The town on the plains is very large, with nearly 100,000 citizens- and a significant amount of nobles, as well. You've added a chunk to the exotic goods trade, which will in all likelihood increase demand for the silk- Nobles get all bent out of shape when one can show up the other in a definitive way.

As for the mine- Elemental stones aren't that rare, and the town is fairly self-sufficient. An increase in population due to available jobs won't make or break anything.

Ah, and can we get a good crossbow for Elle? That one we gave her was a ratty one from a kobold; I'd rather get her something that's considered at least standard for a human adventurer.
>>
>>34732847
There's still time to spend in town- You haven't picked up your armour after all.

And I promise you'll notice when your siblings change forms.
>>
>>34733049
What did Jin evolve into?
What were her requirements for it?
>>
>>34733074
Jin's evolution was fairly standard- Her pattern is unique, and her mom thinks it means something, but she hasn't displayed any special powers, yet. You'll have to ask her!
