Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you annoyed a couple, spoke with an ancient wizard, and ate a meal with friends.

You sigh wearily. “Yeah, I messed with them. I probably shouldn't of. I mean, it got a topless woman to threaten me with a knife.” Profectus perks up at the mention of 'topless woman'. “How were they?” You cock your head to the side, thinking back on it. “Generous, a little saggy. Pretty good over all.” Profectus scoffs. “Please, they're best when they're big and saggy.” Skull Kid shakes his head somberly. “How can you just lie like that, Profectus? Pert and perky clearly superior.” Profectus' response is immediate, he slams his mug down on the ground, spilling wine all over the place. “I will fight you, right now!”

Darzi intercedes casually. “I'm with SK on this one. Giant sacks of meat are disgusting.” Chrys remains pointedly silent on the whole matter, her ears shaded slightly pink. Profectus shakes his head in contempt, looking to you. “At least I can trust you not to have absolute shit opinions, right?” You hold up your hands in mock surrender. “I'm not getting involved, my preferences are my own.” He scowls. “Way to hang a friend out to dry, Mik! I'm pretty confident I could take SK in a fair fight but if Darzi joins in I'm doomed.” Mortia speaks up. “If it's any consolation, I'll support you. Bigger is always better.” He wraps his arm around her shoulder companionably. “See? She gets it!”

Banter carries on in this pattern for quite some time as everyone eats and drinks their fill. It's a pleasant, relaxing meal. Exactly what you needed after so long on the road assassinating corrupt officials, delving ancient ruins, and traversing alternate dimensions. You end up going back to retrieve several more full glasses of wine and load up your plate with more lamb, but eventually you feel you could hardly eat another bite and the meal seems to wind down. Mortia brings a pipe out of her bag and stuffs it with a pinch of some sort of shredded black plant matter, Profectus lights it with a snap of his fingers, show off.

Monks begin to peel off, and Chrys finally speaks up. She'd spoken only seldom throughout the evening's conversation. “You ought to seek out Sister Balik and ask her about my accompanying you.” You nod your head lazily. You're reluctant to sit up, let alone stand. Finally the sense that her eyes are boring holes into you is enough to drive you away from your circle of friends. “Fine, fine, I'll go ask.” She smiles, just slightly, and you slip off to find Balik. She isn't hard to locate, considering there are three or for monks lounging around her while she absentmindedly strums away at her oud.

Thick blue smoke fills the air around them, reminding you distinctly of your master's sitting room. You snap your fingers to get her attention, and she nods her head in your general direction. “Still up for meeting me at the inn later?” You nod. “Actually, a friend of mine was wondering if she could tag along.” Sister Balik shrugs nonchalantly. “I don't see why not, just hope she doesn't end up a third wheel.”

You quickly relay this information back to Chrys. {She says it's fine if you join us. We'll meet at the inn shortly.} Chrys' response is delayed slightly. {Very well, I will meet you in the gardens and we may go together. I do not know how to reach the inn from here.}

You reply after a moment's thought. {That sounds fine, but I'd like to apologize to Aziz and Kaur first. I really shouldn't have interrupted them.} Her response is immediate. {Very well, I will be waiting by the pond when you are ready to depart.} The connection is severed after that, and you take a moment to look around the courtyard for Aziz and Kaur. They're sitting together on a small raised brick enclosure surrounding an immature date palm. They're chatting happily amongst friends, so you wait patiently.

Aziz notices you first and taps Kaur on the shoulder, gesturing to you. She scowls, mouthing 'What' in your general direction. You gesture off to the side, and they discuss amongst themselves for a moment. Eventually they stand up together and walk off to the side of the courtyard. Could they have made this any more awkward? You doubt it, you'd almost think they were doing this on purpose. You make your way hesitantly to the side of the room and bow your head, a gesture of contrition.

“What do you want?” You note that Kaur is the one who speaks, she seems to really be the head of this relationship, so you address her. “I'd like to apologize for my actions earlier today. I saw you meditating during the match and I was curious as to why you moved so much and what sort of benefits it offered. In the process of seeking you out I made an ass of myself, though in my defense I merely wished to practice my playing. I didn't imagine that it would... disturb you two.” Aziz smiles cheerily. “Ah, so that's what this is about! You've no need to worry-” Kaur cuts him off. “I don't know if I believe you.” You frown. “How might I convince you?”

Aww shit, do we have enough time to give/order Prof the archeota so he can scans his books? Gotta start doing that a lot more.
>>
She grins a wicked grin. “Tomorrow, it is my day aid the fishermen in their labors. I loathe this task, as it's tedious and time consuming and I have better uses for my time. On the condition that you perform my duties tomorrow, I will forgive you.” You glare at her. “I'll not do your work for you, at least not for free.” Her grin widens, if that was at all possible. “In exchange I offer to teach you my particular method of meditation, it evolved from my knowledge of Marsala Ve into a series of forms I use to center myself and focus.” You consider her offer for a moment...

You shake your head, briefly. “I'll need to know more about the technique and the work itself before I agree.” She frowns, slightly. “Fine. Essentially the method involves shifting through all of the basic forms of Marsala Ve. I found it difficult at first to perform without a spear on hand, as many of the forms are reliant on the spear. I've been trying to turn it into some sort of 'battle trance' but I haven't managed to perfect the method yet. I find that it's particularly useful if you're trying to learn fire magic, likely because the forms of Marsala Ve are so closely tied to the ancient orders of warrior-priest dedicated to Surya. That said, it's just as useful as normal meditation for any of the other elements.”

Huh... you didn't even really know there were militarized orders of warrior-priest in the past. Let alone that they were responsible for the Marsala Ve. Learn something new every day. “As for the work itself, you're essentially to act as a guardian. Protect the fishermen from pirates, save anyone who's drowning, help them haul in the catch, retrieve damaged or sinking boats, help clean and gut the fish. That sort of thing. Usually you'll be assigned to a team, but I've been forced to do it on my own in the past.” That doesn't sound too tedious... “At least, those are the role's official duties. More often than not you'll be asked to attend to whatever minor problems the fishermen face. I once delivered a woman's baby at the behest of her husband. Your day only ends when the last fishing vessel has come in with the tide.” That seems a little above your pay grade, but it still doesn't sound too bad.

“Should I complete your task for the day, would you teach my companions your technique as well?” She shrugs her shoulders. “Sure, any that were interested. It's a rather difficult technique to grasp if one lacks a background in Marsala Ve, even more difficult if they lack any sort of martial background at all.” You nod, you suppose that's agreeable then. “Very well, I'll perform your duties. At what time do they start?” She taps her chin contemplatively. “Technically they begin when the tide rolls out, but nobody would complain if you were to arrive a few hours late. Rarely does anything require our attention early in the morning.”

Good, that means you ought to be able to attend the Varistha's meditation session regarding that technique you saw him display earlier today. You bow to Kaur and Aziz. “I'll speak with you after the task is completed when I'm ready for training.” Your conversation concluded, you turn and make for the gardens. You have liquor to drink and friends to chat with, and perhaps a lesson to learn regarding the oud.

You find Chrys waiting for you by the pond in the gardens, nervously fiddling with the hem of her shawl despite appearing as stoic as ever. You raise your voice in greeting. “Ready to head for the inn?” She glances towards you, nodding. “I am, how did it go?” You smile. “Quite well, I suppose. I'll be working all day tomorrow helping the fishermen at the docks, but in exchange I get to learn a new method of meditation and I've been more or less forgiven.” She nods, smiling just slightly. “Good, I am glad to hear that.”

She falls into step beside you as you proceed to the underground tunnel to the temple fortress. The tunnel is too narrow to walk abreast, so she slips behind you instead. There's a light tug on your cloak as she grabs hold of it to help guide her through the tunnel. A thought occurs to you as you make your way quickly through the darkness. Doesn't Chrys absolutely detest crowds? Why would she willingly tag along to a place guaranteed to be packed full of people, most of whom will be drunk and foul smelling?

As you trek through the tunnels you decide to question your companion about her reasons for joining you this evening. “Say Chrys...” She responds neutrally. “What is it?” You lay out your question bluntly. “You hate crowds, it's abundantly clear. What made you want to tag along with me to a crowded bar filled with drunken commoners?” You quickly tack on. “Besides the pleasure of my company, of course.” There is a brief pause before she speaks. “I do not trust Balik. She is... suspicious. I am unable to determine precisely why I feel this way.” You smirk. “So you're chaperoning me? Making sure I don't get into trouble?” Her response is deadpan. “Yes.”

It's kind of... cute, you suppose, that she's so concerned for your well-being. By the same token it's odd that she's willing to go so far out of her comfort zone just to make sure you're not alone with someone she finds unsavory. It's only a short while later that you emerge into the larger chamber just below the fortress sitting area and climb up the ladder to the hatch above. A touch of vys and the hatch slides open, allowing you to climb up to the surface once more. Chrys follows close on your heels, and closes the hatch behind you.

The fortress is more or less abandoned at this hour, most guards are likely either asleep, on duty, or in the inn you're destined for. The two of you slip out of the fortress and across the courtyard to the gates, which swing open before you. From the gates, it's only a short trek down the mountainside to the inn, a narrow, three story construction crammed in between a row of houses and shops. The lights glow warmly, and music filters into the night air from inside. You'd have to say it looks rather inviting.

>It's kind of... cute, you suppose
Man his racism runs deep.
>>
You step through the doors into the inn and find that the first floor is almost entirely taken up by a bar and a stage, a flight of stairs presumably leading up to rooms on the upper floors. Balik is immediately visible up on stage, oud in hand. A man next to her is enthusiastically playing a riqq, though he's not playing it particularly well. Fortunately it's a glorified drum so he just needs to keep a rhythm. A third man sits on the floor absentmindedly playing the qanun, he doesn't seem to be all here, to be honest. The music at least is pleasant and Balik certainly seems to be enjoying herself.

Chrys steps closer to you as you enter the crowded establishment, people are mostly concentrated close to the stage, but the entire floor is covered with men and women laid out on pillows or mats. Many of them are smoking a pipe or hookah, and most have a drink in their hand. The entire place reeks of opium, strong alcohol, and fish guts; not a particularly pleasant combination, but you suppose something to be expected in a backwater fishing village. The bar at least seems well stocked, a variety of fruit liquors, wines, beers, and grain alcohol on display.

>Buy a drink, ask Chrys if she wants anything, wait for Balik to finish playing.

You slide up to the bar, forcing yourself between a burly, somewhat fat man and a depressed looking gentleman hunched over the bar with a glass in his hand. Chrys is practically sticking to you like glue, and you take a moment to question her now that you've reached the bar. “Do you want anything?” You have to raise your voice slightly to be heard above the din of conversation and the music. She nods her head promptly. “Something sweet.” You gesture to get the attention of the barkeeper, a rail thin, obnoxiously tall man with drooping shoulders. “Can I get-” You glance at the various bottles strewn about behind the bar, one in particular catching your eye. “A bottle of date liquor and that bottle of sapa? Two cups, as well.”

Ahh, sapa. You have fond memories of drunken nights with your friends, passing around a bottle of sapa. It's essentially rice wine fortified with pure grain alcohol. The difference between it and fortified rice wine being the cobra they leave to steep in the bottle. It gives the drink a rather unique taste, sweet with a markedly bitter aftertaste, and a horrendous burn on the way down. Followed by a pleasant warmth throughout the body. It's said to improve one's vitality and prevent insanity if drunk frequently, something you found amusing to no end.

Getting gud at fire will help mitigate the vys costs abit as well and we already plan to do that.

>>
>>34741931
>>34741922
Either way, one fight and we're drained. I'd like to see us use high-pressured shots of water like bullets out of our fingers.
>>
The bartender reaches behind him and retrieves both bottles, setting them both down in front of you before retrieving your glasses. You nod your head in appreciation, and the bartender holds up two fingers. “Gold.” Is the only word he says, you reach into your cloak and retrieve two gold coins, passing them along without complaint. Rather expensive, but you suppose that's because you ordered entire bottles rather than just glasses. It's a paltry sum to you regardless. You pour yourself a glass of sapa while Chrys looks on confused, before filling her own glass with date liquor and handing it to her. “To our health!” You declare proudly, taking a sip of your drink. It slides down your throat like a glob of liquid fire before settling heavily in your stomach.

“Is that safe? Are you not worried about being poisoned?” You shake your head. “If you get really cheap sapa you might need to worry about venom, but for the msot part it's perfectly safe. Want to try it?” She glances from the glass in your hand to the bottle, skeptically. Eventually she announces with finality. “Yes.” Before seizing your cup and taking an large gulp. She shivers, face contorting in either pain or disgust, you're not quite sure. It passes quickly and she stares into the cup for a short while before finishing off the sapa and passing it back to you. “It taste awful.” She states matter-of-factly. “Then why did you drink it all?” She seems perplexed by your question. “I am not entirely sure.”

(2/3)
>>
>>34741951
That would wreck our fingertips though. Too much vys exiting through too small an area.

If we get good enough to do it without expending a lot of vys per bullet it could be great though.
>>
You refill your glass, sipping absentmindedly while you wait for Balik to finish playing. Your head is feeling a little foggy, both from the wine you've drunk throughout the evening and the thick smoke that fills the room. You've acquired a fairly high tolerance due to your master's habit, but you're still feeling a little loopy. Chrys seems to be in a similar state, judging by the way she's staring off into space utterly relaxed, despite being damn near a nervous wreck when you entered this inn. She's wrapped her arm around yours tightly, and you don't particularly mind the contact.

You're not truly aware that the music has ended until Balik is standing in front of you, a goofy grin on her face and your bottle of sapa in her hands. “You came after all! And you even went ahead and bought me a drink.” She slides into place next to you. “So what did you think of my playing?” You reply on impulse. “Infinitely better than anything I could hope to produce.” She wags a finger at you astonishingly. “Hey, don't talk like that. You'll get it eventually, with practice.” She raises the bottle, kicking back the sapa with little regard for the cobra drifting around inside the bottle. “So! I want to hear all about your travels, my Aghtaki friend!" Did she really just say that out loud? You'd be lynched in some towns if there was even a hint that you might have been banished. "Consider your story payment for my music lessons."

You swirl the wine in your cup for a short while before kicking it back. “My story?” You grin, pushing yourself away from the bar. Chrys clings to your arm rather tightly, and it's a task to separate yourself from her. She's forced to lean heavily against the bar to support herself, seems she was a little more out than you'd thought. “I'll give you a damn good story, just you listen.” You declare confidently, striding up to the stage.

A short hop places you on the raised wooden platform, and you spin around dramatically to face the crowd. A few faces stare back at you but by and large people are focused on one another. You launch into your tale regardless. “Friends! I beg your ears, for I have a tale to tell.” Your voice filters through the din of conversation, people seem to be lending you their attention. “A tale of betrayal! Corruption! Adventure! A tale of loyal friends and vile enemies! A tale of triumph, and sorrow!” Someone in the crowd shouts. “Get on with it, then!”

You channel vys throughout yourself, attempting to make yourself more energetic, cognizant, and charismatic. The surge of energy does the trick as you launch into your story, starting at the beginning with your graduation from apprentice to full fledged vatis. You gloss over your year of gainful employment in the retinue of the shah, instead focusing on the lead up to your banishment. You make sure to emphasize the excesses and corruption of the Shahzada, really playing up what a hedonistic shitbag he was, and still is.
(1/?)
(Apologies in advance for typos. Caffeine crashes suck.)
>>
By the time you've reached your actual branding and banishment into the sands, the room is deathly silent save for the sound of your voice. Someone has handed you a bottle of sapa, and you've made steady progress towards draining it entirely. Considering nobody has stormed the stage to try and drag you off, you assume they're either afraid of you or don't care that you were banished. Maybe they even agree that your banishment was unjust, though that may simply be wishful thinking.

As your tale winds on, you run the crowd through the gamut of emotions. Happy to sad, angered to amused, shocked to subdued. You work them as if you were born to tell a story. At some point, Balik joined you on stage to provide appropriate musical accompaniment. Around the time you're relating your assassination of Lord Spiros, having emphasized his corruption and intent to destroy his own city simple to weaken a rival faction within it, the crowd has gathered as close to the stage as they can manage, crowding in before you. Their faces seem to blur together, until they're simply one monolithic entity. A great beast fed by the story of your exploits.

>The brooches work with a theoretically infinite number of people on the same 'network' as he referred to it. As long as everyone has pricked their finger on each of the brooches everyone should be able to hear everyone.

From the thread where we got Hayes to look at our loot from the ruins we got Fulvia and Prof. Turns out we don't need the brooches on the guys as long as they're attuned to all of them. Now I wonder if Soma changed how they works afterward, but I doubt it.
>>
You retain enough common sense to leave out the dead god living in your head, that is a topic to discuss in private if discussed at all. You also leave out your journey through Umdnus, instead weaving an entirely fictional tale about how the portal deep within the mines of Fort Longia sent you wandering aimlessly through the void. You go into great detail about the creatures you (never) met in that twisted realm of eternal black. You also left out some of your stranger dreams, specifically the prophecy, or command, which stated that you would kill the Shah in only a few days time. You avoid mentioning that Fulvia is actually a Rhynian construct, or that Mortia is a witch from another dimension, or that Skull Kid is a heavily augmented criminal. However, those few details aside you fully disclose your story. The heart you found, your encounter with dragons, the Three Stooges and their antics, the existence of the void, the monster in your cloak. All of it.

By the time your story is finished you're well and truly drunk, the bottle of sapa rolling along the stage, empty save for the cobra's carcass. The single conglomerate entity the crowd has turned into erupts into questions, asking about detail upon detail, asking how you've survived, claiming the entire story was nothing but a bunch of bullcrap you came up with on the spot. You try to stay on stage for as long as you can manage and answer questions, but someone drags you away. The world spins at a truly unbearable speed as you're escorted out of the inn, strong arms draped haphazardly around your neck. You think someone might be massaging your earlobes, but you're a little too out of it to be sure who.

The last thing you can remember hearing before blacking out is Balik's voice saying. “A satisfactory exchange if there ever was one, Mikhael.”

It carries a lot of the same context as a kiss on chick, though prolonged contact carries more intimate meanings.

I sort of tossed this in on a whim, since it served to make the tale that bit more dramatic. In retrospect a vote might have been appropriate. Do keep in mind though, if the story spreads to Anthus it will be by land, not sea. While it's only a one-day sail from the temple to Anthus, not many people have reason to stop in a dinky little fishing village, nor do villagers have much reason to frequent a foreign port.
