All in all, you expect to spend less than 24 hours at the castle. You woke up early enough to get in a shower- the bath full of witches, from the sound of it, the academy girls, at that- and put on a clean, almost new tan flight suit- your older OD green ones having been packed out with the squadron- You caught breakfast just at the tail end. Seems with everyone leaving, Georgette's stopped cooking her huge meals, leaving you to fend for yourself. It's honestly not so bad- you cooked enough extra that Merlin and Katya can heat themselves up a meal if they want it, and you've had time to get a few cups of coffee and check your flight plan- you don't actually go wheels up until later in the evening, with the intent of joining a Luftwaffe group headed to the same base.

The ordinance crews have already started loading the wyvern for the flight, 'defensive' armament required for even transit flights behind the lines, like this one. You snort when you think of it- with Merlin's extradimensional bays, your wyvern can carry about four times the payload, and even lifting all of it is a cinch- apparently, shit stuffed in extradimensional pockets doesn't weigh anything, so you're a good couple thousand pounds lighter this way. The kid really is something else, you think.

Normally, that'd leave you a free day, but around noon, you have one last social obligation to keep- Georgette and Mack's anniversary. It shouldn't be too bad, you figure- they're having it in the grand ballroom, such as it is, in the castle here, and you'll be leaving straight from it to the hangar, and meeting up with the German flight near Berlin somewhere.

Still, you've got a few hours to spare before you need to head down to the anniversary, and since you're up, and well-rested for a change, full, and clean, you're kind of at a loss what to do. You can't afford to get dirty, without a change of clothes, but sitting still just doesn't seem to appeal to you. Shades of Jess, you suppose.

You make for the lounge initially- might as well soak in some TV, see if there's anything interesting in the news, but the noises coming from in there tell you it's occupied- sounds like a rerun of that series about Charlotte Yeager, though you didn't watch it enough to be sure. It was one of Jess' favorite shows as a kid, might still be. Briefly, you wonder if it airs in Japan. Probably.

The Castle Library is your next stop, and it, thankfully, is pretty empty- a pair of students doing early morning homework, you guess, a pile of books on their table and several open ones scattered around. They don't seem to notice you as you wander the shelves. Predictably, most of the stuff here is about or by witches, with only a few 'mundane' books you recognize. The collection here is nowhere near as good as the holds on the continent or in Asia, you're told, but that's down to age- while Barin is apparently built on top of an old Roman fort, not much survived the dark ages, and most of the collection here was moved to the major hold in London on the orders of some queen or other. At least, so you gathered.

Still, there's a couple interesting looking books- a few on Rome, a couple on the Greeks, including the Spartans- you remember the battered breastplate at the louvre, looking at the book- some about asian witches and the difference between their ways of doing things and the european traditions, and one small book you almost looked over entitled 'swamp magic, an inside look at America's secret covens'. The last, to be honest, looks like a sensationalist piece of garbage, but even those have value, you've found. Mostly as entertainment.

You don't have enough time to read them all, of course, and while you'd like to take a few with you- history is always interesting, and the holds tend to have a unique perspective on things- you know you can't, and that you've only really got time to look into one book with any kind of depth.

Chuckling silently to yourself, you pull the swamp magic book out of it's spot and head for one of the chairs set around the large room- one off in an isolated corner.

The book- purportedly written by one Lizette Westbrook- no way to tell if that's a pen name or not- details the 'secret practices, hidden rituals, and ancient lore' of America's 'secret' covens- the southern Louisianan coven that grew up around the bayous and the peculiar American voodoo practices in New Orleans, the Native American covens, though there's no specific people listed there, the 'mountain' covens, in both the Rockies and the Appalachian ranges, and 'the confederacy's hidden legacy' in the south, which you assume has something to do with the remnants of confederate covens.

The majority of the book focuses, though, on the Bayou coven- going so far as to call them America's strongest, witch-for-witch, and possibly one of the best in the world when it comes to magic. That said, there's honestly not a lot of hard data, you notice- little bits here and there, like the requirement for the matrons of the coven- never more than two or three in number, to include a male 'root doctor'- voodoo magician and traditional healers among their number, who, at least, according to the book, holds power equal to the matrons with regards to decision making within the coven. He's also kind of the 'father' to the witches, available for council at all times, and required to give his blessing to- and attend- every wedding in the coven, among other things. Apparently, he's pretty popular as a godfather in the region, as well.

You kind of pity the guy, feeling you know his situation pretty well personally.

Nice to know I'm not the only insane one here.

According to the book, the witches seldom number more than twenty or thirty all told, and frequently much less than that- a marked difference from, say, the American northeast coven, which can number into the hundreds, depending on how it's counted. The rest of the section is sensationalist trash, though- Claims the witches of the swamps and bayous of Louisiana have integrated voodoo mythology and practices seamlessly with magic, with a noticeable effect on their talents.

The native American witches the book doesn't cover anywhere near in depth- it notes that a disproportionately high number of them, something like three quarters, end up as special forces witches in the military, and a high number of those have been heavily decorated in action, but it only barely scratches the surface of their organization, especially compared to the Bayou coven, though it does explain that each people tend to have their own system, and it's a loose confederacy, at best, usually with each tribe's oldest witch standing in as matron when and if the coven ever meets as a whole.

The mountain covens are tied in with the confederate coven in the southern part of the Appalachian range, with the author going so far as to state that some of them, especially the Georgian witches, track an unbroken line through the civil war, and maintain the same traditions, with the added benefit of the tight-knit nature of the confederate coven allowing them to persist as a major power bloc within American witch politics.

No effort to unite the American covens can succeed without their tacit approval- and they apparently still hold a grudge in enough places to render the notion silly, at least, in the author's mind. Still, politics aside, the author does go into some depth about their abnormally high numbers witches, and the relative homogeneity of talents within the coven- most witches in a given area will share talents, with a large number of heal witches, for example, present in northern Georgia, a fact that's brought a lot of money into the region in more recent years.

You're about to get to the last section, the one dealing with the confederate coven and why it's still such a big deal, a hundred and twenty five years on, when you're interrupted by Katya, dressed in one of her more 'subdued' selections from Paris- a plain-looking sky blue dress. She's joined by Merlin, clad in her flight suit- such as it is, your RIO usually going bareleg these days- a second later.

“Hi F-frank!” Merlin beams- she greeted you with one of her hugs when you'd landed, but was happy to listen and not say much while you and Katya shared stories of Paris with her.

“Heya kiddo.” You respond, closing the book- it wasn't bad, though you really strongly doubt there's much hard research in it- “What's going on?”

She shakes her head. “N-nothing. Katya and I j-just wondered where you were. Y-you ready to go down t-to miss Georgette's party?”

You check your watch, there's still a little time, though if you get there early, you can probably pick a better seat.

At least you thought to snag some reading material when you were in Paris.

“So how was your week?” You ask Merlin on the way down.

“I-it wasn't bad.” She says. “K-kenji and I h-helped pack up t-the shop, but m-mister Perry said t-they'd have a b-better one for me in T-texas if I ever wanted to visit.”

You nod- it's like you said, it's all recruiting. “Surprised he's the only one that said anything.” You say.

Merlin shrugs. “H-he wasn't, they all said t-things like that. Tabitha a-and Rachel are using t-the new strikers w-we built, we got t-the powered feeds f-for their guns done in t-time.”

“So Ice still has her M-14, huh?” You ask, and she nods.

Merlin, still clearly upset, follows you into the room. “I-I just don't u-understand it.” She says. “T-they should b-be so e-easy almost a-anyone can u-use them.”

She gets quiet, but nods. Not that she seems convinced, but she nods. You'll class it as a win.

You're looking around when you notice something. Besides the witches, and what you assume are family members, given their relative ages, there's the press. More than enough to make this a problem. Thankfully, they haven't noticed you, yet, but it's a matter of time.

A short matter of time. There's not much to the anniversary- just a priest saying a few short words, really- then the press is up, taking pictures, talking to the couple. You'd wonder about it, had you not known them. During the last war, it seems, the wedding was taken as a propaganda thing, and that's kind of been brought forward again, with the current war- especially given that the French are absolutely vital to it, their ports and railways providing the necessary logistics links from America to the front.

You can't leave without saying something to Georgette and Mr. Mackintosh, though- thankfully, after a while, the press looses interest in them and you're able to talk to them.

“Frank, Samantha!” Georgette says- you wince internally, knowing someone heard that. “You did make it! We weren't sure if you'd be able to.”

You turn to find the outstretched hand of a reporter- the press badge displayed proudly on his vest, which has like, eighty pockets. I was wondering if you'd answer a few questions.” He says it quietly enough that no one else, save the immediate group here, hears it, so at least there's that.
