You, Anthony Grant, stand before the high, earthen walls of Pueblo at what must be some strange number of minutes after midnight. The gate to the city hangs too low for your land-ship pass under it. A level 40 cleric with a giant war machine could easily topple the walls, but such an action would probably be the exact opposite of what you wanted, but leaving it out in the wilderness might also be dangerous. Someone might hurt themselves or, worse so, damage the MD trying to hijack it. You need someone to stay behind.

Your brother says, “I'll stay behind, someone needs to keep people away from it, right?”

You turn around to him. Did he just read your mind? “Just you alone?”

“Well the way I see it, I am the only level 90 here AND I'm decked out in raid-tier items. If whoever wants this thing could take me out, they'd be able to take out the rest of you combined.”

He wasn't wrong, you could feel it. He was the strongest one here be leaps and bounds. The second strongest was Symbology with 70 levels and a full set of production-class gear. If two high-end 90s show up, you're not sure you'd even be able to stop them.

You hear Judicature point out, “We'd probably help.”

You turn around to give her a questioning look.

“The <Morning Star>. If we heard someone has stolen something like that, I'm sure we'd be able to track them down and get it back.”

“I should still be there.” Your brother retorts, “That way, if someone tries to steal it, we'll know as quickly as possible. They'll probably take some time to figure out how to drive it, so we might get the <Morning Star> to show up before they can do that.”
>>
>>34756226
You nod your head. It made sense, sounded like a good plan, and had a backup plan built right in. “Okay.” You nod to your brother. “You stay here. We'll head in, see if we can make some allies, probably get some sleep, and we'll head out tomorrow.”

“Sounds like a plan.” You brother says before turning around and heading back to the Manifest Destiny.

You turn your attention back to the gates and walk through. There are soft glows coming from thin, silver wires that crisscross above the streets. The road goes all the way to a monolithic structure covered in similar wires, which you now realize are spider webs. The buildings sprawl out on either side of the road and they are all made of the same earthen material as the wall. There are ladders and webs all along the buildings, leading up and down to all the floors of the buildings. Despite it being so late, there are still people wide awake, talking and laughing; both Adventurer and Lander. Unlike the other cities, it is quite easy to spot the Landers from the Adventurers. While the Adventurers are made up of all the humanoid races, the Landers here all appear to be driders.

Lilac comments, “I'm glad the devs decided against adding the spider-people to the list of playable races.”

“Why's that?” You inquire.

“Because then I'd be a drider right now instead of a dwarf.” She responds, “It's strange enough getting used to these almost-normal bodies. Imagine having four extra legs. Who knows how long it'd take just to learn how to walk.”
>>
>>34756250
You instinctively look down and begin imagining have two extra pairs of legs. It wouldn't be that hard, right? Maybe it would be. How would you even turn around? Your thoughts on the finer points of multilimb locomotion are interrupted by your head running into something. You look up to see a multicolored cloth. Taking a step back you realize this is, in fact, the lower body of a drider clothed in some kind of woven blanket.

The monster-person turns to face you, the massive body turning slowly. You look at the upper body and see the body of a very buxom woman.

“Are you okay?” The woman asks.

“Yeah,” You respond, “Just looking for the inn.” While you speak, your lower self tried to figure out if you would a spider-lady.

“Oh, it's right there.” She points the the building behind you.

“Oh.” Is all you have to say on the subject before turning and entering the inn without another word.

After paying for some rooms from a very gruff looking spider-man, you retire to your room to sleep for the night. You think over what you'll do first thing tomorrow.

WOOO I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
>>
>>34756703
Slumber envelops you and before you know it, you awaken. It is early morning, and you get the distinct feeling you should not be awake so early, but your body refused to go back to sleep. You let out a sigh and roll out of bed in the same manner you have done for so long now. You get dressed in your armor and head out into the streets. Looking up, you see that the soft glow had been coming from droplets of water caught in large spider webs, probably magically infused to produce light at sun down. Or maybe they're just magically infused glass? Your curiosity gets the better of you and you have a distinct need to investigate further.

You start climbing a nearby ladder, up and up, and you hop off onto the second floor. Many Adventurers walk along the path up here. It looks like the buildings are like pyramids, where each floor is smaller than the previous, made up of a walkway around and a central building, whose roof makes up the next floor's walkway. You notice a pattern of tiles going across all of the walls. You assume these tiles to be purely decorative, until you notice the Landers walking along them. Being a spider-person probably has a number of benefits, now that you think about it. Free silk, cool spider-clothing, and your own personal wall-walkways.

You walk around the second floor for a while. This appears to be where all the shops are. Farmers sell their crops, butchers sell fresh meats, a number of shop owners sell a variety of tobacco products. It is now you truly begin missing the taste of things. You need a nice cigar, some bourbon, and a big ass steak. You sigh, remembering your time in New Orleans with Canis. The smooth burn of the drink going down, the heat of the cigar pushing through its paper shell, the nicely seasoned steak cooked absolutely perfectly. The memory of you two staring up at the night sky, talking about nothing, breathing smoke into the vast atmosphere. You wish you could go back to that.
>>
>>34758983
Something bangs into you, not that is hurt through your armor.

“Sorry!” You hear behind a pile of crates being lifted into the air.

You look to see a brown hat named DiscoKnives. “S'okay” You respond to him, “Need some help?”

“No.” He says, hefting the crates higher and wobbling away, “I got it.”

You shrug and turn to go up another ladder.

On this next floor are smithies, textile machines, crafting merchants, and just about everything you'd see from an industrial area. Every city seems to be set up in this way. Residential, commercial, industrial; each with their own section of they cities. The residential is where people can find the inn and other housing options, as well as where the NPC houses are. The commercial areas are always where the shops, merchants, and the AH can be found. Finally the Industrial section is where the crafter teachers and crafting merchants can be found, giving recipe items for a price.
>>
>>34759010
Your eyes meander around the area until you remember what you are doing up here.

You look up to see the web just above your head. You are not quite sure why, but you jump up and grab hold. It takes you a couple of tries, but you manage to get on top of the wire.

Balancing on the webbing, you step forward.

Then you stop forward again.

You continue to walk forward until you reach one of the balls of glass. You bend down, shaking the wire a bit as you do so, and poke one of the orbs. It ripples like water, but the viscosity is much, much greater than that of water, it is almost like a thick putty. Whatever this liquid was, it was not water. You cup your hand around the liquid. It does not seem to be giving off any light right now. Whatever this material was, it was magical and only glowed at night. Or maybe glowed under a certain light level. You could probably experiment some more, but maybe Grandma Spider knows.

You begin to balance your way back over the the third story. The first quest in town is to present Grandmother Spider with a blanket, and you'll probably see her sooner or later, so getting her a blanket will probably give you some bonus diplomacy points. Everyone loves gifts, and grandmas love blankets; it's a foolproof plan!

You hop off of the wire and onto the floor below and then head down a ladder to the shopping floor. Looking around, you quickly spot a shop with blankets for sale. Quite a stock you can see, as it seems to be overflowing the shop. The sign outside had them at 100 gold, but a line was drawn threw it to mark 50 gold, and again to mark 25 gold, and finally the current price lays at 10 gp, which is nothing compared to the thousands of gold you have to spend.

You head inside and begin to look around. There are so many different patterns and colors to be found. The colors are quite bright and their pattern mostly triangular.

“Excuse me!” You shout into the shop, “Can I buy one of these?”

“Hold on a second!” You hear someone shout from behind the pillar of blankets.

A young woman reveals herself, she is no spider-person, so you conclude they must be an Adventurer. “Blankets not selling well anymore?” You ask.

“They were selling quite well before, but now some people have stopped buying them, I'm afraid to say.”
>>
>>34760835
“Well, I guess there's not many people doing quests after the databasing.”

“Databasing?” She asks.

“Yeah, it's the word we came up with for the whole getting stuck in the game thing that happened.”

“Game?”

You glance up to see her class is Peasant. “You are not an Adventurer.”

“No, I'm not.”

“Well... uhh...” You point to the pillar of cloth. “Tell me all about these blankets!”

“Well, they're made of the finest cotton and sown into the patters that have been used by the spider-people for more than a hundred years.”

You pick up a cloth and look at it. It is a white background with turquoise triangles down the center beset by burgundy triangles facing away from each other. “So, this is the native pattern or something?”

“It has been used for more than a hundred years, and more than a thousand of them had been presented to Grandma Spider as a testament to my family's ability and everyone in the city has one of our blankets.”

“And yet you have lowered your prices.”

“Well, Adventurers recently stopped paying attention to our humble shop, and the only ones who could buy were the locals... but with most Adventurers not buying many of their things either...” She begins mumbling some things.

“I'll take this.” You say. “In fact, give me, like, twenty of these. And a really long one, for two people.”

“Y-yes! Of course!” The woman goes about taking blankets off of the pile, and stacking them up for you, “That will be 215 gold pieces, please.”

You pull out the gold and place them into her hands.

“Thank you!” She said, “Maybe now everything will get back on track.”

You ponder a moment. This is only a temporary solution. Sure, she has a couple hundred gold to spend, she spends it on food, the farmers and butchers get that money and they can spend it at the blacksmith to replace broken tools, and said blacksmith would use it to buy more materials and food. Over time the money would funnel out of the city to Adventurers who sold iron to the blacksmiths. Adventurers are a strange people, not really needing the help of Landers. We can gather our own food, mine our own ore, we really only go to town to sell things, not really buy things, except for those times when you just ran out of iron ore and the crafting merchant is sitting there, smiling to himself with his inflated prices, because he KNOWS you'll buy his damn ore. The bastard.

“Fuck the crafting merchants!” You suddenly yell.

“Oh!” The woman exclaims, “I-is something wrong?”

“No, sorry, I was just thinking of something else.” You reply, “I've just realized that things probably won't go back to normal. I mean, the only way to make money is if people need more blankets, so I don't think you'll be selling any more unless there's a sudden population boom.”

“Hmm... What if I make the blankets fall apart over time? Then they'll have to buy them!”

“Nah, they'd probably just go to a different store.”

“But if we ALL do it...”
>>
>>34763259
Something about lowering quality on a monopoly felt very unethical to you, most because your headphones had a tendency to break and you SWEAR that something like this was the cause. That or your tendency to drop them. You'll probably never know.

“What if instead...” You say, “You make something new, something that everyone needs!”

“Like what?” She asks.

“Well...” You ponder for a while, “Okay, I'm not too sure, but tell me about Pueblo and we might be able to figure something out.”

“Oh, well, my family had been here as far back as before the exiling. It was a human settlement back then, and it was also pretty small. More of a farming village, really, also wasn't called Pueblo yet, that part came later. Anyway, the King of Misvert at one point blamed the beast-people for the death of his wife. Funny thing about those kings, they always end up losing their wives for some reason. Then they go...” She pauses, “That's a different story. Anyway, the king exiled all the beast-people from his kingdom, except for the recently appeared Adventurers. So, when he was told that the beast-people were powerful warriors, he feared they would join his enemies, so instead he gave them their own nation, saying that they owned all land of the,” She makes hand quotes, “City” then puts her hand down. “As well as the surrounding twenty miles. After that the spider-people began expanding the city limits to increase the amount of territory they had. Of course after a while a different King of Misvert noticed it and put additional stipulations to the agreement. Every king has more or less done the same thing since. It's probably why the...” She looks around and whispers, “Rebels started, you know, rebelling.”
>>
>>34763279
You recall Lilac telling you something similar. Now hearing this side of the story, you're also not sure about how the devs made the spider-people the villains in that one dungeon. Although, there was the fact that the Town Guards don't show up to break your face when you attack the castle. Maybe the devs expected someone to outright kill the king and no one ever did because why would you kill a quest giver? Although, there is the fact that you kinda just DID kill the king. Maybe that's the reason why the <Morning Star> didn't arrest anyone or really do anything. Are the cowboys and spider-rebels in cahoots?

“So, anyways,” The woman continues, “The spider-people follow Grandma Spider, who is kinda their leader. Also, immortal. Maybe. Can't say I've ever seen someone try to kill her, so it might just be that she doesn't age past... grandma-age, but as far as I've been told, she's been around for longer than my family has been making blankets. Also, I heard that the natives of Wen followed her here from another world, but with how little of them are left, it might have just been made up. Also they say she made the stars by catching droplets of water in her web and throwing the web up into the sky. Oh, and Adventurers really liked giving her our blankets until recently, did I mention that?”

“Interesting.” You respond. You didn't think of anything during all of that. Maybe if there was some other use for these blankets. You rub your fingers on it to feel the material. It was quite fluffy and warm, and the threads are also very compact. Maybe with some it could hold liquids or gasses or something if it was chemically treated, like rubberized cotton, which you only know about because of a History Channel documentary about the history of zeppelins.
>>
>>34763297
A zeppelin! OF COURSE! She could make the gas-bladders for zeppelins out of rubberized cotton! If only you could remember how to make it. Damn. Maybe Lilac knows about it. Hell, maybe she has a better idea. Maybe she knows how to make super-secret government-rubber that doesn't let hydrogen escape.

You pick up the stack of blankets and say, “Alright. If I have any idea on how to help you out, I'll come see you, but if I don't, you need to go think of something useful to make.”

The woman nods with a serious face. Perhaps she is already thinking of what to do next.

You stuff most of the cloth into your inventory, but one refuses to be contained, so you carry it around out in the open. Having a full inventory is always such a terrible thing, but at least the item isn't sitting on the ground like it normally would be.

You take a step away from the clothier when you realize the most peculiar sensation. You had been ignoring it for so long, but now it refuses to be ignored any longer, you have no underpants and your crotch does not appreciate this very much, especially considering the only thing protecting your sensitive bits from your metal bits is the robe. You don't want to know how Guardians are feeling right now, but you certainly believe that they would definitely want underpants.

You turn back to the woman and say, “Hey, ever think of making underpants?”

“Underpants?” She questions.

“Yeah, underpants! You know, keep your junk warm and protect them from the horrors of rough pants?” You motion to your crotch to make sure she knows what you are talking about. “Trust me when I say Adventurers are going to be all over it in a heartbeat.”

“Oh! Okay.” She pauses, “How do I make them?”

You look down to your recently purchased blanket, then back to her. “I'll come back later with blueprints.”

“What are blueprints?”

“Schematics.”

“I don't-”

“Pictures that show you how to make things!”

“Okay! Okay! I get it!”

You let out a sigh and turn away. Now comes the time of diplomatic importance; you need to deliver this nice blanket to Grandma Spider and hope she likes it.

You head through the street that is like a spoke, heading for the center of the city and its massive tower. As you get closer and closer to the center, you notice less and less Adventurers and more and more Landers, specifically the spider-like variety.

You begin to climb stairs which lead you into the structure. Two guards stand on the stairway, armed with spears. They cross their spears and one asks, “What is your business here?”
>>
>>34764795
“I wish to speak with Grandma Spider.” You respond, “I have come to speak with her for diplomatic reasons and present her a token of good will.” You are probably making things sound more important than they really are, but that's how you speak when royalty is involved; everyone knows that.

The Landers looks you up and down and the two uncross their spears. “Proceed.” They say in unison.

You walk past them and soon reach the top of the stairs. The inside is made of a smooth black stone with columns lining the sides of the room, between each are the silvery spider webbing, forming intricate, geometric patterns. In the center of the room sits a table carved out of the same stone as the floor and around said table are a bunch of Adventurers in white hats, all with <Morning Star> above their heads.

“I say a sales tax.” One says, “It's simple and-”

“It is NOT simple!” Another shouts, “Do YOU want to collect the paper work of every merchant's sales, calculate their taxes owed, cross reference that with the taxes they paid, and on top of all of that find a way to enforce the tax code without causing the Town Guard to get involved? No? Well, I guess it's not so simple, is it!?”

“Well then what do YOU want to do?”

“I don't know! Maybe set up a toll booth at the guild hall.”

“So you'd have us charge people every time they'd want to look at their bank? That's just tyrannical.”

“I dun even know why we're even taxin' anyone.”

“A government can't run without taxes!”

“Unless you want us to form some kind of Ayn Randian for-profit government, I don't think a no-taxes plan will work.

You walk past the table, completely unnoticed, and through two massive doors. It is then that you find yourself in what can only be described as a throne room. More of the black, glossy stone spreads out and comes up to form a massive throne with no back, upon which sits the giant body of a spider. The black chitin shines like the stone as they wobble.

“Oh, a visitor!” Comes the voice of a sweet old lady, “Please, let me make you some tea.”

You look up to see the body of an old woman. Her face strains as she tries to leave her chair.

“No, no!” You shout, rushing up to her, “No need for that.” There's something about an old lady trying to stand when it's obvious that she can't that just pulls at your heart strings. “I've actually come to present you with a token of good will.” You hold out the cloth covered in triangular patterns.

“Oh, it's lovely, deary.” One of her six legs grabs hold of the blanket and she wraps her upper body in it. “I'll be sure to use it every day.” She pats you on the head with her spidery foot. “Thank you so much for this. I didn't even get you anything, but I guess I couldn't have known.”

“It's fine!” You respond, “But I was going to propose a project, one of great importance. Spider-silk is very strong, so I was wondering if you would be able to supply me with some for some projects that might help the city.”

“Oh, deary, I would love to, but I haven't been able to spin a web for quite a while now. I suppose I could try, but-”

“No, no! That's fine. I'll just...” You sigh, “Well, I guess there are other spider-people to talk to that about.” You rub your chin. “Oh, those lights on the webbing outside! How do they work?”
>>
>>34764826
“Oh, that's just some star-water on some old webbing. It's quite pretty isn't it?”

“Yes, very. So, how do you get star-water?”

“From fallen stars, of course.” She responds, “Of course, the star-water I have I got before the stars were placed up in the sky.”

You rub your chin.

All of these are good. You also have a, knack for ending the thread right as I go to bed. I checked one last time from my phone as I lie in bed, and here it is. It's happened for multiple threads.

Anyone else kinda hesitant about potentially moving on to airships so quickly? We still haven't even really broken in the Manifest Destiny yet.
>>

>[ ] “What do you think about flying ships?”
Hell yes. With one of these we can track down Canis in a day.
>>
>>34764976
We could always use the silk and star water to improve the Manifest Destiny instead. I do wanna know about how she feels about the Morning Star though. Did they usurp her power?
>>
>>34764976
Why don't we turn the Manifest Destiny INTO an airship. Have a collapsible frame of enchanted silk we can withdraw when we want to cruise on the ground.
>>
>>34765031
We'd probably have to lighten it up quite a bi for that though. That means removing armour and weapons.
>>
>>34765049
Or enchanting the hell out of it to increase the lift generated. It's fucking magic, ain't gotta explain shit.
>>
>>34765031
Perfect
>>
>>34765080
Still rather have something specialized for the task. Maybe a small one we can launch from off the back of the Destiny.
>>
>>34765113
I could get behind that. A small, tethered observational craft used for scouting would be pretty cool. Like a really fancy crow's nest.

Speaking of airships, has anyone in the novels bothered trying to make a hot air balloon? It seems like it'd be really trivial if you're a mage with access to fire spells.
>>
>>34765113
I was thinking the same thing.

Wait how about this; what if we designed an airship that could attach itself to the Manifest Destiny and lift the entire ship. We could use it to get around obstacles the ship can't traverse now. We could also separate them if we needed to slug it out on the ground in a fight while the airship bombs the target from 5,000 ft up.

We can rig up a chair to a crude aerofoil launched with a lever of course, as a microlite style craft.

Not that i've heard although alot of people in the threads wanted to make some. The problem is that baloons are very easy to pop and there are lots of wyerns/dragons near mountains. I'm sure there are other monsters that might attack too.
It's a good idea but one needs to not do something stupid like try and fly over the grand canyon.
If we make a massive series of bags of holding for certain components we could probably lower the weight even further but we don't know where that is or how to craft it since it used to be npc only and Japan's slow asses didn't get anywhere on trying to fix that problem for months. Damned evil shiroe didn't even really bother until his portable noobs were the right level for the quest.

Original suggestor of Spider airships here.

The main benefit of spider-silk is its strength. Add buffs to that, and I'm pretty sure that's the highest strength-weight ratio we're ever going to get.

This strength allows for significantly higher life/redundant lift systems, so I think an airship could last a while against flying mobs. I think adding some sails that use directed wind magic for turning would be good too.

As for airship vs. Manifest Destiny: I wasn't trying to replace it. The Manifest Destiny is far too heavy to be lifted, and while a flying scout would be useful, the airship stuff is mostly for Pueblo, since they're the only ones who can produce it anyway.
>>

I'm not 100% convinced it's impossible to airlift the Manifest Destiny, anon. I think it could be possible through a judicious and creative combination of scientific engineering and magic. Thus far we've mostly employed elemental forces to generate power for the engines, but what if we got a little more inventive? As you pointed out spider silk has an absurd strength-weight ratio, it actually surpasses damn near all comparable materials IRC.

What if we modified the ships steam engines to generate large amounts of heated gas, utilizing the principles of both a hot air balloon and a lighter-than-air aircraft. While connected to the engines airship would thus generate significantly more lift. Using this principle we could also shrink or expand the size of the ship to suit our current needs.

We also could look into ways magic could be employed to improve it's efficiency in ways impossible in reality. Stuff like enchanting the hull to reduce the weight, using bag's of holding and pocket dimensions to store excess materials, etc.

I'm not too familiar with Log Horizon's ability to bend space/mass, so I'm working on the assumption that you can't.

I really think the Manifest Destiny is a "don't fix what isn't broken" deal. We don't HAVE to solve its weight problems, just do what it does best: be an unstoppable land force. Get heavy artillery and carry loads of supplies.

Big air targets are hard to defend, anyway. Spidersilk and flying mobs encourage smaller, more mobile aircrafts.

Since Shiroe's in Japan, someone else is going to have to free up the zones in America before it turns into the worst of monopoly bullshit.

You know what the best best kind of artillery in my opinion is? High-altitude bombers.

In all seriousness though I totally agree that the MD is best left as an unstoppable land juggernaut. But I'm also saying that if we found a way to temporarily increase the lift of our airship we could airlift our castle on treads over any obstacles it couldn't simply plow through, like mountains or rivers. Once we get out of the plains these things will become an issue, I suspect.

When our airship isn't hauling the landship around we could shrink it down by deflating it, decreasing drag and weight significantly. We could even stow unnecessary lengths of silk in the MD while it was flying independently. Best of both worlds.
>>
>>34767316
Somethingsomething high-altitude bombers missing more often than low-altitude bombers.

I'm a bit surprised with all this intent on getting the MD to fly is all: you'd think it would be the american way to just bulldoze a mountain.

>temporarily increase lift
....I await the time when someone figures that out.

Man even Americans gotta accept some shit is just too damn difficult to bother sometimes.

Sides, we're talking bout combining a huge ass tank and high explosive aerial supremacy. Murican as fuck.
>>
>>34767352
Well I suggested here>>34767089 that we could use the steam engines to heat up a gas that's already lighter than air. This would cause it to expand, allowing us to inflate the dirigible well beyond it's original size. We could also keep extra, specially shaped balloons on the Destiny designed to be used in tandem with the airship. As long as the entire rig maintains an reasonable aerodynamic shape in flight there isn't any reason it wouldn't work.
>>
>>34767516
I'm a little unsure about the mathematics of that, but okay.

I hold that if it works for the Tarresque it will work for us. One of the things I love about /tg/ is how deep arguments over the most ridiculous shit imaginable can get around here.
