You are otto schulte, a thirteen year old girl on her way to destiny - you are a student of the scholia progenium on besvir, and a prospect to become one of the selected officials to one day lead the great imperial armies in battle, if you survive. Little is know of your past - you only know what your uncle(whom you've got no blood relation to) told you: They where charged with your care before you where old enough to crawl. For as long as you can remember you've lived amongst the stars onboard shiftships traveling the interstellar void of the immaterium.

You´ve spent the last three months on the planet and have aquired both friends and foes all the while dealing with the simple act of keeping yourself alive - but not everything is as it seems on Besvir and you´ve begun to wounder how much is the Scholia testing you, and what really lurks in the shadow between the trees.

Your story is only just beginning.

Last time we got our shot and ended up in the ring.

My twitter: https://twitter.com/CommissarQuest

New? Welcome! If you want a quick recap of the first chapter please visit: http://pastebin.com/wHn6kjnN & http://pastebin.com/RLKeWW2R

Character Sheet: http://pastebin.com/dsKY4pFN

General Roll rules:

Lowest of first three rolls for things the character is skilled at doing.
Median of first three rolls for things the character is "capable" at.
Highest of first three rolls for things the character is utterly shit at.

Rolls are 1d100

You have to "beat" your stats, which stat depending on the task at hand(Pushing a stone - strength, while doing the split agility) these rolls carry modifiers with them - a simple task gains a + 50 while a hard task gets you a -50, if a bonus+your base stats ever exceed 100 you auto-win, you always have to roll in combat. Stats are modified by talents.

Cont post explained:If there is a post marked at the end with "cont" its because your QM is lazy, and can't type fast - or because he wants to give you the option to jump into the current events, or offer opinions, if none are offered he'll continue as normal

Disclaimer in regards to Re:Spelling:I suck at spelling big time, like big time. Like nah for reals if you find it annoying don´t read - I understand you I do as well

Adept Thomas Emilton observed the energy output of the valley with practiced ease, seven hundred and thirteen units where currently online and under his charge, and from his work station he supplied them all with the power they needed - the electricity their hungry machine spirits demanded for their trouble. It was, perhaps a humble station he mused while gently tuning the throbbing energy outputs running out of the dam and into the valleys beyond but he was nothing more then a simple cog in the machine and this pleased him, he was proud of the work that was given to him - and while anointing the machine once more with the blessings of the ommnissish he observed the energy demand of the spirits around him.

++++++++++
4.522556% OF ENERGY PRODUCED CONSUMED
++++++++++

This was a good number, in only a short few years his station would be supplying energy to the local hive, if he could not power these few valleys then that would never happen - it was as then he noticed a slight increase in power demand 0.000001 units to be precise. Adjusting the dial he took some interest in where the power was going.

"The Scholia. Of course" his augmented voice box hissed.

Meanwhile some miles away Commissar Rim lifted out his hands in a dramatic motion his chain-sword tugging away at the air, desperately seeking flesh to end, "Now, my pupils - you may think this ring simple - for indeed, it is nothing more then a ring of packed earth - but, its not quite all" a low rumbling suddenly began to shake the tiny room - and Otto Schulte together with the rest of her fellow students where forced back - as the ring suddenly began to rise from the ground taking the commissar with it - creaking metal and hissing pistons added their voices to the orchestra, lights lit up along its side - green lights inside skulls admits the cogs and support structures that held the ring up in the air - before long it was now a pedestal a meter into the air, as it grounded to a halt Commissar Rim appeared at its edge, observing you. "If you fall of the edge, you are out - if you can´t move, you are out - if you die, you are out" his words cutting the air like bullets. "Today, you will be allowed to forfeit - surrendering means punishment, punishment for failure is scrubbing the scholia yard until I can see my reflection in the rockcrete"

Without a single moment to waste he pointed towards the boxes behind you, from which he first came. "Inside are practice weapons, clubs, sticks, drilling swords - take on, fight over them if you must. Once you hear the speaker call out your name, crawl up on the ring and fight whom-ever you meet. I´ll be observing from above."

You don't use colons to bind two independent clauses together, you use a semi-colon.
That sentence before was two clauses, but one was a dependent clause just like this sentence.
That is when you use a comma.

When shown properly it would work like this; but I don't expect you to understand this.

Also the proper name would be Ottilie Schulte. You also capitalize names since they are proper nouns.

D: DC: Capable: 63, 30, 18: Taken: 30+10=40 Base Prec: 1 Degrees of failure)

You rush towards the boxes, ignoring the others surrounding you - if anything your time in the scholia had taught you to maneuver a crowd, elbows you try to look over the boxes - the more burly older of your classmates seemed to be hogging the larger boxes containing clubs and swords - to rush in there would be a bad idea. Instead you decide to depart the groups fighting over the closes boxes to circle the corner and get at the ones in the back - most of them seemed at first glance to contain broken pieces of wood and their like and a handful of the others where already here grabbing hardy looking pieces of wood and steel, however: You do spot something; the faded red color making it stick out. Tucked inside one of the boxes is a handle, it was leather bound and had a guard for your fingers, as you drag it out of the box the "blade" comes into view more properly, it looked like a sword but it had no blade, rather one side seemed to contain a hollow, looking inside this you see machinery on the other end - it looked a bit like the blade the Commissar used but his had teeth instead of this hole, suddenly cutting over the sound of the kids fighting and bickering over the weapons came a voice.

"Otto Schulte, and Kalm Gorg, to the ring"

>Your name was called up first!

A broken chainsword is still more durable than a plank of wood... we could try to make use of the missing teeth by getting a lucky parry where our opponent's weapon gets caught in the hole allowing us a chance to disarm them...

Tightening your group around the blade you walk of towards the ring - the silence that gripped the hall when the vox roared to life seems content on staying your pulse rising with each step you try and spot someone you know in the myriad of faces observing as you clamber on top of the raised platform - but to no avail, Zarkov and Angelina both seems to be gone, hopefully both of them got weapons they could use.. standing on top of the platform you take in the room properly for the first time. The room was rather large after all - but murky and damp, perhaps fifty meters to either direction of the ring - the ring itself was rather large in and off itself, the packed dirt kept contained within its metal casing at least the size of a house - some forty meters in diameter. Still looking to the corner of the room through the hazy light beaming down from above, admits the floating particles of dust you notice two large vents contained inside the wall - the two of them completely dominating the right side of the room. Their blades now dormant but you get the feeling if they turned on this entire room would either be chilled to the bone or blown away.

Stepping up a lot easier then you on the other side is your opponent. Kalm Gorg - the boy was huge, easily towering over you by two heads, you knew that kids of all ages where inserted into a scholia class but this guy looked to be well into becoming an adult already, snorting he tightens the grip of his large metal rod. "Sorry" he states in a muddy low-gothic "I will try not to break your bones" you get a sinking feeling Commissar Rim set you up here. A moment drags past before the vox crackles again from somewhere above you. "Now then. There are thirty of you, by the end of today I expect there to be only one left standing"

He lunges at you without warning, catching you off guard - with a overhead swing he brings the steel rod down towards your face, you´ve only got a split second to reply!

D: DC: Capable: 61, 9, 76: Taken: 61-25=51 Base Agill: 20. 3 Degrees of failure)

You try and dodge under away from the blow to keep it from crushing your skull, halfway through your mad dash to the side however you feel it rush into your left shoulder - pain roaring through your body as the glancing blow sinks its concussive force into your tender flesh. You cry out in pain and stumble away to the side - your assailant readying himself for another blow already - you're bent partially over and have your back against him, tears filling your eyes and the grip on your blade loosening. You give him a look over your shoulder to judge distance and see his smile - the bastard is enjoying himself he´s just a meter or so away quickly approaching. Trying to keep yourself from falling to your knees and crying out for your uncle your mind rushes with potential ideas as Kalm lifts his rod to finish the deal.

D: DC: Capable: 89, 65, 9: Taken: 65-20=45 Base WS: 20. 2 Degrees of failure)

You look up at Kalm, observing him for a split second while the adrenaline pumps through your system, feeling the bite of his weapon across your skull already you try and fight of the urge to run and cry, surrender means he won´t kill you at least - the crocked smile on his face tells you that he might keep going regardless, in panic you lash out. Spinning around and arching in a wide circle trying to send him swooping to the ground. Praying that your wild swing will at least knock him prone you feel it suddenly stop - the shuddering impact sending force up your arm. The blade slammed into his knee, and he roars in pain - temporary off balance, his left hand protectively covering his wounded flank as if holding it will get the pain away. His eyes clenches shut in pain for the moment

(DC: Capable Rolls: 58, 9, 86: Median: 58, WS: Base skill 20+25=45 Against 58 = 1 degree of failure)

You briefly take in the scene - Kalm looks to be slowly regaining his senses from the blow - making an ugly face and turning his eyes straight at you. You feel your heart pumping madly, each second dragging by like in slow motion - heat flowing through your muscles - you feel giddy and terrified all at once. Letting your lounge roll over your lips to wet them your mind ticks away at the myriad of things happening all around you. The smell in the air - the feeling of your weight in your shoes, the faces of the people watching, the slightly salty tang of your lips - the pain in your back. However as Kalm begins to move you explode in a flurry of instinct rushing towards him, the blade in your hand long forgotten, revving up a mighty kick you send it straight towards his nuts, the steel-tipped boot hitting home with crushing force, for a moment Kalm simply stands there, his eyes wide open and his mouth opening and closing like a goldfish before like a gnarled piece of rotten wood he falls to the ground, both hands over his crotch, tears streaming down his eyes - you see he´s trying to cry but no sound escape his lips, a hand over your wounded shoulder you put down the blade on the ground tip first for support - silence falling across the room again before you hear the vox crackle

"Otto Schulte, get off there minus points for not using your blade to finish it - next! Rakalom Murtin and Rag'win Rytana, next pair off kick Kalm down from the ring will you?"

A median is the middle number of a range of scores.

If we rolled, 60, 40, 20, 40 would be the number we used. If we rolled 30, 89, 56, 56 would be the number we would use.

This: And to clarify, if you are "shit" at something its the worse of three rolls so if you roll 10, 45, 89 the 89 is the roll, for things you are good at the reverse is true - if you roll 98,87,8 the 8 is used. This number is then put up against your base stats found here: http://pastebin.com/dsKY4pFN I also give you negative/positive modifiers depending on the situation, so say you have a +25 like in the last roll your stats are boosted by that number, so if you´ve got 20 in base, it becomes 45 - then we see how many tens we can put between your stats and what we rolled. In short: Low numbers are good, high numbers are bad.

Perhaps I should make some mock-up battles and post them somewhere later?

You bite down hard to stop yourself from crying while opening your jacket - folding the side down to observe the shoulder - swollen, and red it glares back at you from underneath your tops straps you gingerly touch it and pain surges through you - it feels worse now, after the fight but you don´t quite know why, feeling the tears burning behind your eyelids you lean back and try and focus it away - just like last time, moments drags on as the pain beings to subside, thankful as ever for what your uncle taught you that day you fell you open your eyes again when you hear Zakorvs voice "You alright there Schulte?" concern painted across his face, he´s holding on to what seems to be a piece of hard wood, Angelina is standing behind him, looking over his shoulder at you with that knowing smile of hers.

You force a smile as you look up at your two companions - their black uniforms making them blend in with the black walls that surrounds the room quite well "I am alright, don´t mind me focus on your fights" you managed to say, but the rest is drowned out by a cheer coming from above you. "Rag'Win - good work lad, now get off there. Next up: Nikkobar Eugene Vlimton and Ravin Melksson" both Angelina and Zakrov turn their attention briefly to the ring and the changing of fighters. Prodding your shoulder again to asses the damage a moment drags on before Angelina speaks "Alright schulte, if you think that is best - still you should get that looked at afterwards.." your two friends leave you to your pain as you think of what to do next. The floor is cold, and your shoulder keeps getting stiffer, scanning the boxes in you casually wonder if there is any medipacks in there somewhere but quickly discard the idea - like Commissar Rim would let you patch yourselves up. Its with some effort to get up from the floor, your shoulder hurts but you can move the arm, if only slightly. The fight raging on inside the circle is rather brutal, you notice Kalm not to far away, sitting up now looking tried and beat.

>What do we do now?

DC: Skilled Rolls: 93, 72, 32: Lowest: 32, Prec: Base skill 23+20=43 Against 32 = 1 degree of success)

Grinding your teeth you make your way over to the nearby boxes, the opened ones all seemed to have been emptied out - their content used to arm the students now observing the fight going on inside the ring. Rubbing the side of your nose you lean forward into each one, trying to see if you can spot anything. But to no great success - as you round the corner of this box stack to watch the backside however you accidently kick one of the empty ones, making it skid to the side. Your eyes falls upon a tiny box quite unlike the others, it was nestled in between two of the heavy set black wooden crates and had just been liberated by your timely kick, rather then some ugly crate it was a well designed jewelers box... curious you lean over and flip the lid open - inside resting on its cushioned bedding lay a single dagger - no larger then your hand, tiny but with a wicked looking blade tipping its crown.

You look over your shoulder to ensure nobody is watching before securing the dagger inside your boots - taking care not to cut yourself on the sharp blade. Walking back outside you notice the fights are still raging - Nikkobar is holding down some girl in a full nellson - looks like the bastard is going to win. Good, it means you might get the chance to fight him. Correcting your jacket and trying not to move your shoulder to much you walk over to where Angelina and Zarkov are standing observing the fighting. "Feeling better Schulte?" she ask noticing you approach. You nod "It not that bad really, any of you fought yet?" both sake their heads "I hope I go up against someone without a steel weapon..." Zarkov adds in, lifting his stick "So what do you think Rim meant when he said I would be losing points?" you casually ask while falling in. "Probably just Rim being Rim" Angelina shrugs back "He´s always got his own ideas" "He´s just testing us I think" Zarkov adds in before pointing upwards "I can´t even see where he´s looking from" The three of you continue to observe the fighting, you make note of the weapons used by whom...

The three of you continue to watch the fighting - and before long both Angelina and Zarkov is forced up to fight. While Angelina manages to drive her steel rod up some poor sods nose making him forfeit Zarkov however loses after getting knocked out by a hammering blow to the chest by a training sword. You check up on him afterwards, but aside from his broken pride nothing is ruined.

Before long, thirty have turned to fifteen and your name is called up again.

"Otto Schulte and Alliana Elman" scrambling up to the ring again you are faced off with a girl about a head taller then you - you saw her use that brutish hammer to deck someone on the floor, her teeth spilling everywhere.

DC: Capable Rolls: 24, 35, 32: Lowest: 32,WS: Base skill 20+20=40 Against 32 = Flat succsess degree of success)

The two of you circle each other for another few seconds, the throbbing pain in your shoulder reminding you what lies in store if she gets that heavy looking hammer on you, adrenaline begins to pump in your system again, the world seems to slow down as each heartbeat seems like a lifetime between - everything grows clear, the light, the sweat on your brow, the cold rush of air flowing over the side of your face from some distant ventilation. Tightening the grip on your blade you decide to cast the dice, you cast yourself forward letting lose a loud scream, pain fueling your rage as the battered old piece of metal comes from above in a downwards swing, surprised at your sudden outburst she tries to rise a defense but to no avail, a sickening sound of bone being crushed fills the hall as your blade shatters her elbow, you step back in shock as she falls grasping at her ruined arm.

Looking down on your blade you notice the blood running down its side.. the sharp metal cutting into her flesh it would seem, stepping back you hear a voice from above again "Pathetic, I hoped more from her - Otto, knock her out would you? I want to see teeth flying." "Next up: Rynd Tomtin and Lok Bestin"

>D: Hit but not aim for teeth.

You approch the girl, listening to her qiet sobs, on the ground she does not look half a threatening as before but you know what comes of not listening to Commissar Rim - your back proof enough, the humiliation and pain of the public whipping still fresh in your mind as you tighten the grip on the ruined chain-sword, still, you muse - hitting her teeth might be a litle to much.. the thought of losing something like that makes you shudder sligtly. Instead, you rise the blade above you like an exectuioner and bring it down, tip first onto her forhead - averting your eyes when you hear the "thud" of impact. You walk off, not wanting to look back at the impact you left behind.

Nice compromise. I'll probably be voting to make sure Otto doesn't look away from the distasteful acts she takes in the future. One: What are the exact effects of the appearance rolls last thread?
Two: When are we doing facial rolls again?
Three: How long will the next few years be?
>>

1. They are just that - you will generally look like that unless something extreme happens - should you for instance be stuck with poor food on a desert world I`d force some re-rolls, but your genes wants you to look like that. The muscle bonus is not neccisarly your strenght, but just how well defined they are - yours will be very well defined.

2. Sometime after the two years, when I got to a convinient mirror.

3. Around twenty threads give or take. If you survive.

I just woke up and caught up and I got to say, your dice rules/system, it sucks.

It pretty much ensures that while we're still young, still learning and completely unskilled, that its nearly impossible for us to succeed in anything, which in turn makes it nearly impossible to improve let alone survive.

It's like the system is set up to be great once we graduate from the Schola, but at the same time, the exact same system is ensuring that we will never be able to survive let alone graduate.
