"I'm here because apparently your answer to going and finding the herbs was to bring another sick patient to the castle. If you think we're a church that does charity, then our hospitality has been mistaken for something that it isn't. I think your 'specialist' should work on cleansing her own demons before she tries working on someone else." Antonin raises his sword to the ready.

You can already feel the headache coming back. You really don't want to deal with this nonsense.

You are Jack Albator, expert sea dog, stylish dueler, and soon to be the champion who saved the hero of Gallete's life.
They just don't know it yet.

Right now, Antonin Friand, one of the knights of Gallete, impedes your entryway to the castle. He doesn't appear to like the skin condition that the doctor you brought, Madeleine, has acquired. Though, you're not sure that telling him that it's not contagious would help the situation any.

"Camille, Take the bird and Madeleine to the stables. I have to fill this lad's prescription."

Antonin isn't amused by that jab, he grips and twists at the hilt of his sword.
"Last chance, Jack. I don't want to fight you, but I don't want you bringing more devils inside the castle to treat someone who has an evil spirit. So stand aside."

You begin to question how the state of medical knowledge could have fallen so low in this land.

>"You're being a stubborn fool and your princess put me in charge of treating the patient, so I order YOU to stand aside."
>"You remember what happened back on that battlefield, right? Do you think you're doing anything but stalling me?"
>"Us fighting here isn't makin' your hero any more healthy, you realize."
>Try explaining the situation with Madeleine's skin fungus and why it's not caused by 'devils' or 'evil spirits'.
>Go ahead, make his day.

"Lad, you're being a stubborn fool."
He grips the hilt of his sword tightly, but you continue anyway.

"Nothing you've been doing has helped your hero, and the princess left me in charge of treating her. So I order YOU to stand down so the patient can be treated."
Antonin doesn't say anything, only continues to grip the hilt of his sword.

"After all, if your theory about evil spirits causing her illness were true, then she should be healed by now. You tell me Antonin, why isn't she healed?"

He draws his sword, pointing it at you.
"Heh, Lad, us fighting here isn't makin' your hero any healthier."

He lowers his sword, but he still gives you a very stern, unapproving look.
His response is made in a low-pitched growl, "I should believe that you're the only one who can make her healthier, and not the people of Gallete?"
"All I'm sayin' is lad, if they could have cured her, they would have done it by now."

His brow furrows, "And I can say the same to you. Your ridiculous masks and rules about entering and leaving her quarters hasn't cured her either."

You're suddenly aware that he doesn't realize the masks and quarantine is for the nurses and castle's benefit, not the hero's.

"Lad-"

"Lad, I don't care what you think, I'm bringing the doctor in whether you have to be a ball when it happens or not."

"Hmph, Jack."
His posture lowers, his shoulders become square, it's clear he's fought at least a time or two before.
"I didn't want to say it, but I'm glad you feel that way."

You smile, deep down, you feel the same way.
"Then we're in agreement."

Your thumb snaps the cutlass from its sheathe, with a whistle, it raises to the ready. Just in time to meet Antonin's broadsword as his entire form travels and meets your own at lightning speed.
For a guy clad head to toe in armor, he sure gets around quick.

Your back foot slips, he pushes the advantage and shoves you backwards.

Draw
Spin
Fire.

Just in time for his chestplate to be made acquainted with several rounds from your revolver. He leaps backwards as his hand reaches behind his back.

And with a whistle, a silver dart flies through the air and deflects the last of your salvo.

"Not bad, kid." you say, and here you thought this would be boring!

"I wish to say the same, Jack, but you fight like a dairy farmer."

Also guys, I just realized I messed up

I left the +20 in from when you guys were fighting the monster, but Antonin isn't a monster, so you shouldn't have got the +20 bonus.

BUT you did get the rebuttal right, and he's going to use his save next round anyway. So you would have got the +20 and the save keeps it from going over 100 HP in damage.

Here's his dart.

"How appropriate lad, because you fight like a cow."
You wave your cutlass around in the air, leveling it right at him.
"And Aye'm going to milk this duel for all it's worth."

Ha, good one.

"That was lame!"
"Can it, Camille!" You instinctively yell back at the crowd.

Antonin smirks, he smoothly juggles another silver dart in his off-hand.

With a toss, it flies straight at you, catching your sleeve and ripping it slightly. He readies and throws another dart, which flies below you as you leap into the air.

With a flick of your wrist, your revolver unloads right onto Antonin's head, his armor starts to chip and crack as you come down HARD onto his guard. Sending him stumbling backwards,

"Sonoffa" he stops his backward slide with his sword, grinding against the wooden exterior of the bridge. "You're not much for style and grace, are you Jack?"

Antonin slashes wildly at the air as you land. More darts fly in your direction, lightly touching your coat, but not enough to damage or scratch it.

"Sorry Lad, I save my style for the ladies." You cut across his armor, the well-tempered metal screeching as more and more gashes and cuts make themselves visible in the once shining bronze plating.

Your revolver presses the attack, plinking one by one off of his sword. With a counter, he manages to lightly cut a sleeve.

He looks like he's about to say something, but instead he shuts up and simply presses his attack, smart lad, he is.

You can feel the pistol recharge it's ammo, your sword feels heavy in your hand.

"Besides, Lad, if you wanted to know my style, you should ask your sister about it."

With that, Antonin rushes straight for you a second time.

Your pistol rapidly fires off every round in it's chamber as he closes in on you, each shot bouncing off his broadsword. You're not sure how, but he's able to spin it in a circle to act as a makeshift shield against projectiles.
With his off-hand, another silver dart flies, with him trailing shortly behind it.

Your cutlass rises just in time to split the dart in half, but Antonin is running only a few paces behind it. With a yell and a swing, he charges straight for you.

But his sword only cuts lengthwise across your coat, having a barrier jacket is something you've grown to appreciate over the past few days. With his guard thrown off-balance, you push your cutlass straight into his chestpiece and kick him. Shredding the metallic shell into halves which he struggles to keep on his body.

He grumbles, grabbing the useless piece of armor and ripping it off himself. Leaving him fighting in only the armor on his legs and arms. He tosses the chestplate over the bridge and into the moat.

"Lad, I'm a hero, you're good but you aren't going to stop me. Why don't you just stand aside and let me heal your hero?"

He doesn't let up, keeping his sword up at the ready, he seems like he's going to try another charge.

You sigh, "Every second we spend out here is another second your hero comes to death. If curing her yourselves is a matter of Gallete pride, then don't think about your hero and instead-"

Who else was it that felt shamed about summoning an illed hero?
Thinking of which, you didn't notice it before, but she's standing in the crowd that had gathered to watch you two fight.
"-and instead think about your Princess. Think about how your hero dying would affect her pride."

He traces your line of sight, turning around, he spots the Gallete princess, Charlotte, in the crowd.
His sword returns to its resting position, and he turns back around to face you.

"I don't trust your methods, and I don't think anyone you're doing is going to help her. And I DON'T like you trying to guilt trip me with the princess's cute kitten eyes."

Argh, well there goes that.

"-but, I do believe you're right on only one thing."
His sword returns to its sheathe, he breaths a sigh
"Our hero's life was never mine to gamble with in the first place. And I should have realized that before I stopped you, but don't think I wouldn't do it again in a heartbeat."

Success?

He walks off into the crowd and approaches the princess. You can barely hear him over the noise and conversation, but he says at least one apology to the princess before wandering off through the gates.

Behind him his sister trails along giving him an earful about fighting a hero by himself. You let your weapons return to their rightful holsters.

>YOU WIN!

The princess yells at some of the assembled guards who have since ran the crowd of spectators and have raised their shields to stop your advance into the castle. Slowly, one by one, they lower their guard.
The princess walks through the crowd, approaching you with a rather angry look on her face.

"Listen here you," She says "Just because I asked you to help treat our hero doesn't give you the right to pick fights with my knights outside my castle."
"Aye wasn't the one who picked that fight, Princess. I brought a specialist that your knight friend found to be unsavory."

"She has a kind of.. skin condition."
"'Skin Condition'?"

"She's covered in scales, and-"

Camille is at the end of the bridge with Madeleine slithering along behind her. She seems to have thrown a large blanket over her that covers up most of the mushrooms and fungus. With the exception of the end of her tail, which thrashes and twitches as she crawls along the cobblestone path.

"Oh. My."
"Right, so the Lass is covered in scales, and she worked around mushrooms for years. Eventually it grew into her scales. They have medicinal properties so-"
"Wait."

She tilts her head,
"Mushrooms grow? I thought they were evidence of the presence of local gods?"

Oh god damn it.

You cough, "She wants to see your hero. She's an expert in this sort of thing."
"Can she really fix her?"
"Even if she couldn't, it's not like we have much of a choice, so it's best to just calm down and let her work." You let your hand grab her white hair as you muss it up some. Her ears fold and twitch under your grasp.
"I-if you say so. I'll try anything at this point."

You turn to see what's taking her so long to get across the bridge. She's gingerly stopping every few feet, checking to see if her slithering across the fully-wooden bridge doesn't give her a splinter while Camille is desperately trying to tug her along.

It's the little things in life you appreciate, like having feet, you like having feet.

You want to get this over with, and Madeleine's slow pace isn't helping matters any. Camille hands her sack of ingredients to you as the two approach.
"Ye okay, Lasses?"
"I'm fine it's just, I've never felt safe crawling on boards."

You're well aware that it's already the afternoon and the Gallete Hero hasn't been treated at all.
"Here, let me just."
"No, I'm okay." She dodges a couple of boards that have been cut and splintered from your fight.

Handing the sack of ingredients to Charlotte, you decide to speed up the process. There's still a lot of bridge to go.

"Lass, can you coil up, still?"
"What does that have to do with anything."
"Just hold on tight, then. And try not to claw me."

With a surprised squeak, you wrap the blanket around her elongated body and lift her up into your arms, her tail coils around your back and grips on.
"(J-Just put me down! I'm fine!)"
"No, there's a sick patient and we've wasted enough time as it is. Let's go."

You carry her into the castle as the other two fluffy critters follow behind.

Setting her down on the stone floor in front of the patients room, you relieve Aligot of his duty.
It's a good thing, too, because he looks like he could collapse at any minute.

"Aligot, go get some rest, you did well Lad."
"-oohh."

He puts up his hand and sways side to side, you notice his feet are still firmly rooted in the exact place you told him to not move from. Sometimes it's nice knowing that there's someone around who can follow your explicit orders.

Madeleine examines some of the nurses, asking where their cutlery is before taking a mask and entering the room.

He nearly sways and falls over, "N-no one gets in the room without a- with ourght a- uerm, something I guess. I think it was a mask?" He makes an impressive yawn and rubs his eyes.
His face perks up at your presence, "Oh, Jack. can I go now?"
"Yes Lad, you did great. Next time in town, Ale is on me."
"Oh thats.-"

He slumps against the wall, sprawling himself out along the length of the stone brickwork.
"-I'll just lay here for a while."
"You do that" you say, stepping over him as you walk into the room.

Taking one of the masks out of your pocket, you make sure it's filled with peppercorn before slipping it onto your face. The tart smell from the peppercorn burns your eyes and makes them water.

Madeleine notices you doing this, and asks a pretty fair question,
"..Uh, why peppercorn and why inside your mask?"
"It keeps the bad smells out, Lass."

She shrugs and slithers out of the room, "You shouldn't stay here if she's contagious, I need to go cut these ingredients."

Camille has seemingly disappeared, same with the princess. Which leaves you alone in the hallway outside the patient's room with a sleeping Aligot.

Where to next?

You decide that first thing is the most important, help Madeleine get those ingredients properly cut. Following behind her, you make your way to the kitchen.

Already, walking in, you notice that she's set several of the maids to work. They work tirelessly grinding and cutting the herbs into fine powders and diced pieces. Madeleine has already set to work brewing teas and pounding flour into a fine dough.

"Anyway I can help, Lass?"
"Uh." She looks over toward the Tea kettle.

"If you could, take each of these petals from those yellow flowers, and one at a time open them up and put them into the boiling kettle."

That's a pretty tall order for you, there must be a thousand of the bloody things. Stuffed and packed inside of an already overflowing sack.
You fumble with it for a bit, every time you open a petal, it immediately wants to fold back again. Eventually you just skip the middle man and risk burning yourself by reaching your hand into the kettle each time you want to place a petal.

Eventually, the castle staff has all sorts of odd-colored liquors, strangely scented breads, and kettles of tea.
"I think we're ready." She says, instructing the maids to bring along some portion of the medicine she's made.

The next several hours pass uneventfully, mostly composed you and the maids picking up trays and brewing more ethers and teas.

The sun sets, the crickets start chirping along the inside and outside of the castle. Most of everyone who was involved with the craziness of the day has long since gone to bed.
Except for you, and Madeleine. The occasional odd maid comes along to check up on both of you. You stand outside the door, awaiting anything Madeleine might need.

Slowly, you start to feel yourself fall asleep while propped up against the door, only kept awake by the sound of a gentle, whispered conversation happening inside of the room.

A much louder, stern voice from inside grabs your attention,
"Can you go get the Princess, please?"

You're not sure about the layout of the castle, for the most part you just guess of how it's supposed to look based on the castle that you've spent just as much time in.
Speaking of which, you wonder what the much-more fluffy tailed denizens of Biscotti think of you suddenly up and disappearing to Gallete for several days.

You suddenly remember Yuuki, you hope wasn't scolded or punished for tagging along with you to go fight a monster in the middle of the night yesterday.

Flagging down a maid, you have her go fetch the princess and tell her to get to the patient's room. You wait outside for her as you see the white-haired princess approach, dressed only in a very skimpy nightgown.

"W-what's going on?" She desperately tries to rub the sleep from her eyes.
There's a light yell from the inside, "You can come in now."

Walking into the room, the first thing that you notice is the bed the girl is laying on. It's been propped up at the back with a stack of books, leaving her sitting upright.

The girl is still flustered, but it's noticably improved from the last time you saw her. Madeleine continues to slowly give her cup after cup of the disgusting tea. The girl slowly flops her head around to look at you and the princess as you enter.

Sounding like a squeak, barely above a whisper, you can hear a kind of accented voice that is oddly familar, but still strange and foreign all the same.
"..who are you? what is this place?"

Or
>Just go home in the morning, Atsuko might be trying to sell the few things you left at the shrine.
>>
>>34805911
let the princess speak and if we are not needed leave with Madeleine
>>
>>34806079
Stay for a few days see if Madeleine would come with us so we can try to fix her condition
>>

>>Stay here for several days for their hero to recover so you can talk with her

>>
>>34806079
>Stay here for several days for their hero to recover so you can talk with her
We invested to much time to lose!
>>
>>34806110
That was also another question I had planned for the future: Take Madeleine with us or leave her here in Gallete? Something to discuss with everyone else until that vote comes up.

But that vote won't come up until next session.
>>
>>34806079
>>Stay here for several days for their hero to recover so you can talk with her
I have absolutely no faith in the court of Gallete not to catastrophically screw up this situation. They need the CDC.
>>
>>34806132
>That was also another question I had planned for the future: Take Madeleine with us or leave her here in Gallete?
I say we make her the offer and let her decide. Seems to me her talents are being wasted in Gallete and, unless they pull their heads out of their asses, she would be better off in Biscotti.

>>
>>34806132
I'd be mighty hesitant to take her on the basis of how that would be interpreted politically in Gallete. Given how butthurt Antonin was for just trying to keep her alive, stealing another nations' hero must be the biggest diplomatic middle finger there is here.

Still, if she kicks the bug, I say we let the hero herself decide where she wants to go.
>>
>>34806252
Maddy's the lamia/snakegirl, not the hero.
>>
>>34806079
>Stay here for several days for their hero to recover so you can talk with her

As the senior Hero around these parts, we've got a responsibility to make sure she knows what the fuck is going on. Can't trust cats to explain things properly.

>>34806183
Eh, we're right next door, if we take her with us and they need help again that just means she will be able to charge them out the nose for travel expenses and whatnot.

Plus she's probably gonna want to get her skin condition sorted out, and I don't trust people who aren't us not to attempt some absurd treatment while we're not looking.
>>
>>34806132
We should take her. She was never really welcome in Gallete anyways.
>>
>>34806263
Oh whoops, guess I was reading between the lines there. I say we DEFINITELY take her.
Again, assuming the whole otherworldly plague issue get's sorted before we leave.

"Fluffy Tail land, be careful though, they sometimes bite."
You stifle a laugh as Charlotte slaps your shoulder.

She clears her throat and begins an introduction speech that you're certain she had planned out beforehand.
"Brave Hero, I, the princess of Gallete, welcome you to Flongarde."

The bedridden hero groans slightly in her voice, her eyes are fluttering as she struggles to pay attention as the Princess continues.

"You have been called here by the Kingdom of Gallete to act as our protector in these dark and troubled times. To take up the banner of our country and become the pride and joy of our nation. We've been waiting for your arrival, and welcome you to join us as the strongest warrior in all the land. And I, Charlotte Di Gallete, wish for you to not think of me as your Princess, but as your friend and family."

"um uh." Is the only response she gives, there's a minute of intense silence before she says anything else.
"that's nice but I have to get home for lessons in the morning or Dad will get mad at me. au revoir Princess."

With that, she tugs at her blanket, and immediately falls asleep once more.

Even though you try to repress it, you can't help but chuckle. You wonder if the Princess isn't going to try and give her the speech a second time when she wakes up again.

Hey, wait a minute!
"Huh, I don't remember anyone givin' me a speech like that. I feel cheated."
