Welcome to Constantinople. The time is late morning, the weather is sunny, and the date is October 14.

War on a global scale was primed to erupt. It was the kind that had not been seen for at least a half-century. Academy City had demonstrated its ability to intervene, militarily, in the affairs of other nations. The Republic of France, recipient of said intervention, was not under duress when they had asked for it. Still, many a critic had spoken out, decrying the weakness of French government, for having demanded such aid. Fanning the flames, surprisingly enough was the Holy See. Whatever madness that had gripped the town of Avignon, it had been child’s play to spin the narrative of religious oppression. Though traditionally separating Church from State, it was easy for many French to attribute Academy City’s actions as more arrogant than American foreign policy. Coupled with the Holy See’s call for a united front amongst Christains, popular opinion of the technologically advanced City-State had soured.

All was not well with the world however. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was in turmoil and conspiracy theorists posited that a civil war was being fought in secret. Islamic jihadists shifted focus, subtly targeting Christain institutions. Talks of a new, retaliatory, crusade emerged. The Far East geared up for war. China was hungrily eying the newly discovered resources in Mongolia and northwards. India signed a treaty with Academy City, an exchange of technology for materiel and promises of mutual defence. Even the Japanese were starting to protest its status under American “occupation”. Many speculated that they were just awaiting an excuse. Thailand also underwent another coup, though no one really cared about that.

You put down the newspaper. The world sure wasn't as troubled as you were. After all, you were,

You are Sagara, just Sagara. The past few weeks had been unkind to you. If your friends heard you grumble about it they’d have told you to stay in the City. Academy City, that is, seeing as you had escaped from there. Like many of the rumoured children of Academy City you had a power. While only a measly Level 1 on the Ability User scale, it was definitely a useful thing to have. Sound Cloud, the ability’s name, was sort of like having your own personal ultrasound machine, giving you another perspective to perceive the world through. In fact, it was easier to classify you as an actual ESPer. Still, you’d rather use the proper term, Ability User.

Your Ability was useful in evading the authorities, even more so when you’ve been given training to avoid detection. Academy City rarely let its Ability Users go. You were planning on returning of course, but on your own terms, not theirs. There was a reason for that. It was a simple promise, but it one you intended to keep.

In the grand tradition of the Problem Children however, you weren’t going to do things by half. While you remember who the real planner and mastermind was in his absence, you stepped up to the plate. The small group needed someone to hold them together, emotionally devastated as some may have been following your hasty departure. Now everyone was committed to the cause. It just wasn’t the same without him. That was why you sitting in a coffee house in Istanbul.

You were alone, with a newspaper and an empty cup of coffee. The rest were due to arrive soon. You believed the girls were gathering allies, whereas the boys were scrounging up some kit for the job ahead. The first to arrive was,

It was the ladies who arrived first. Well correction, one lady, a girl and an even younger girl arrived. Asuka and Mishka were in the company of the esteemed Lupin IV. You weren’t surprised. Though you had a suspicion she’d be involved at this juncture given your desperate need of allies at this point. She had the experience and the skills, no doubt about it. That said, she was a liability in her own way. The Lupin name was as ever infamous, and the fourth generation head was no different. They always, without exception, announced their jobs and left a calling card. The Fourth also liked to tease you but that was just a personal issue. She sauntered in and sat across from you, a catty smile on her face and conspicuous get up, as usual.

“So what are we going after this time?” she asked.

Mishka settled in Asuka’s lap as the latter ordered some tea.

“Why do you even bother?” you replied and turned to Asuka.

“The usual,” Asuka pre-empted your question.

“To the Amakusa Catholics, who are undoubtedly shopping for fine antiques and wares in historic Constaninople,” Mishka started quoting, “There is a particular golden falcon, adorned with the loveliest of jewels, that has caught my eye. I believe it shall make a great companion piece to a portion of the Endymion that rests within my backyard. Please leave it at the top of the most southern minaret of the Hagia Sophia by tomorrow at dawn. Kindly, Lupin IV.”

You dared not respond to the ever-growing smirk that was adorning the thief’s face. To make things worse trouble had found you. The rest of the table made no move at all, ignoring shouts of and cries of armed gunmen bursting in to the coffee house. You were going to,

You took stock of the gunmen. White helmets with black clothes with “POLIS” printed on it. Yeah, they probably were not here for you. It didn’t hurt to be cautious however. Stretching out your Ability, you saw the world in black and white. It wasn’t the colour left your sight, it was just that it wasn’t as important to perceive, as the sounds that were in the air. You think it always felt strange that you mentally build a solid model of inert objects whilst things in motion appeared like a blotch constantly emitting the waveform signature of a sound, no matter how quiet. Their radios were emitting. Strangely, it was not in the local languages, but English. It did confirm your suspicions though. They weren’t here for you.

“There she is, don’t let her get away,” a female voice was heard through their radios.

The gunmen turned towards your table, eyes set on the girl across from you.

“Oh dear, it looks like Sholmes is back on the case,” Lupin complained, “Well, see you later cheri.”

She got up. The men started running and shouting. Over the counter and in to the kitchen, Lupin IV would lead them on a merry chase. That left only two policemen pretending to look stern as they awaited orders from their superiors. It was to be expected that they would prioritise the thief more than her companions. It was a mistake to be honest. Another five minutes of them glaring and they finally relaxed their guard. The rest of coffee house went back to enjoying their coffee, strangely enough.

“I suppose Tadakuni and Kyousuke are stuck outside,” Asuka finished her tea.

She was right. Now how were you going to get out of here?

You inclined your head towards Asuka who only sighed at your magnanimity. That or she was mentally complaining about using her powers so often. It was easy, she said, it was boring, she said. Well you’ve had enough excitement over the past few weeks already that you were beginning to get sick of it. Mostly.

Having strolled out the back, the three of you finally met up with Tadakuni and Kyousuke. They had been tasked with obtaining some additional hardware that would be required to aid you in the job. Security was tight, given that Lupin had just made your job harder than it needed to be. Their haul secured two handguns and what you think is a disassembled rifle, all with matching suppressors and subsonic ammunition. You had come back to an old and small hotel room. Most of it was discussing your approach.

“Wow that’s impressive for a few days work,” Lupin inserted herself back in to the conversation.

She had come in through the windows, you noted.

“At least you have a butter knife,” Asuka remarked.

The thief only shook her head lightly, dismissing the comment and returning to the map laid out on the other bed.

“So, is this it?” she asked, “They’re going to transport it by sea?”

It was a map of an unused private harbour. The two boys nodded as you contemplated how to best approach it. The Amakusa Catholics weren’t exactly easy to deal with. They were magicians after all. That was why you needed the guns in the first place.

“Oh, I almost forgot,” Kyousuke piped up, “Teacher said he was looking for you.”

“Ooh, ooh, who’s this teacher? A complication?” Lupin asked.

“Nobody important,” you answered, “I’ll,

You were well acquainted with the old man called Teacher. He taught your friend, now, he taught you, as well as Asuka and whoever else dared to ask. Waiting by the counter in the lobby, he seemed as jovial as the day you left him. The rest of the lobby held two men, the receptionist and some other guest. They both looked bored out of their minds, and both were reading magazines.

“Hey kid,” he greeted.

“Teacher,” you didn’t bow.

“Look, I know you’re fully aware of what you’re doing,” he began, “but can’t you find another way?”

That was the start of a familiar argument.

“I’m doing this because I chose to Teacher,” you replied.

“It’s a stupid plan.”

The target of your current endeavour was an artefact that had been lost in the French occupation of Malta. While there was no more Holy Roman Emperor for it to be gifted to, there were others who were more than welcome to pay a good sum for it. That such people would use it to start or even profit from a war was none of your business. Well it was, you were hoping they would. It meant another thing for Academy City to focus on, something to keep them distracted, from you.

“The Maltese Falcon is not a toy,” Teacher repeated.

It honestly wasn’t. It was a weapon, a weapon that the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem was willing to pay good money for. Even they knew that war with Academy City was coming. It wasn’t that which Teacher had been talking about. He knew as well as you do that they were going to take it for a test drive.

“If you are so dead set on this course of action then I will have to punish you,” he continued, “after I acquire the Falcon for myself.”

“That’s only if you can old man,” you replied.

“If I can what? Punish you? Or steal the Falcon before you can?”

“Both.”

“You remind me of an old student of mine,” Teacher smiled, “His name is Zhaolie. For your sake, I hope that you do not follow his example.”

He turned around, prompting the other guest in the lobby to get up as well. It seemed he was Teacher’s current companion and merited further inspection. The man was black, had a spirited afro and wore a coat like Teacher’s despite the hot weather. There was a bulge in one of his pockets which hid a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. However, that wasn’t the thing that bothered you. There were several straps of leather that he kept under his shirt that expanded and contracted alongside his breathing but you didn’t know what it was exactly. Your eyes met briefly but there were no meaningful looks exchanged. At least you didn’t think so.

Returning to your hotel room, you found the occupants silent. They had been waiting for you. As if anticipating your question, Kyousuke was the first to speak,

“We actually might have a problem this time.”

“Tell me it’s not Herlock Sholmes.”

“No it isn’t,” Lupin answered quickly, “It’s his descendent.”

“That’s basically the same thing isn’t it?” you wanted a drink now, “What’s the problem specifically?”

“That there is a greater police presence,” Asuka replied, “and that they were being very proactive in trying to locate our dear accomplice here.”

“I really didn’t want to make your life harder,” the French thief actually looked apologetic, “But come on, it’s the Maltese Falcon! I always wanted to see if it really is the stuff that dreams are made of.”

“You can have a look at it after we steal it then,” Asuka said.

“And miss out the fun part?” she turned to you, “Come on, it’ll be easier if we work fast enough.”

[1/2]
>>
>>34821356
The plan had to hit the place from as many different angles as possible. Asuka was the main distraction after all. You and Tadakuni were going to locate and retrieve the Falcon, specifically, using your powers. Providing electronic and long range support, were Mishka and Kyousuke respectively. In effect, Lupin wasn’t actually critical to the plan. She was going to do her thing, approaching from the sea. No matter who got to it first, the agreement was that she would resell it to the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, or the Teutonic Knights in short. With Teacher announcing his intentions downstairs, could you really afford taking her off the team? Even with the increased police presence?

“It can’t be helped,” you finally said, “We’ll just have to proceed as planned. Not after Teacher said he was going after it as well.”

“Oooh a rival,” Lupin cooed.

“Not quite,” Asuka interjected, “he is an aged martial arts master, as far as I am aware. If anything, I would equate him to your uncle LeMarc that you keep chattering about incessantly.”

“Is that how it is? Why do I get the impression he’s trying to teach you something?”

“His name is Teacher,” Tadakuni spoke in what seemed like ages, “Teaching is kind of his thing.”

“Ah, so this is why you don’t mind accelerating the timetable,” she concluded.

“The only thing we can do is hit hard, and hit fast, preferably tonight, before things get ugly,” you elaborated.

“Daccord,” Lupin got up, “I shall go and annoy my counterpart a little bit more until you are ready to move tonight. À ce soir.”

You’re not sure if that was a good or a bad thing as she climbed out the window. The rest of the Problem Children split off to do their own thing. There weren’t many things to be said, each member having found something to occupy themselves. Over the weeks, everyone had grown silent in the time between jobs. Tadakuni looked like he was going to go out for a walk but you knew he was simply going to go do some legwork, scoping out the place you were going to hit. The youngest of the group, Mishka, had discovered the wonders of video games, while simultaneously handling most of your ELINT and her part of HUMINT. Kyousuke grew to like taking care of the hardware you all used, whether it was radios, disguises, or firearms. He was probably going to do an inventory check. As for Asuka, she contented herself with meditation, in the lack of fighting to be done. You were pretty sure that she was just napping though.

It was usually Tadakuni and you to do the legwork. Your ability to model areas you’ve never been to, coupled with his ability to dampen sound made a potent combination. In addition to that, it was less awkward to loiter around a broken warehouse if you weren’t alone. Today it seemed that Tadakuni was slightly less talkative than usual.

“Something on your mind?” you were worried naturally.

He nodded.

“Well, if you having girl problems, I feel bad for you son,” you started.

Then you realised that he probably was with the look he was giving.

“Shit, sorry.”

“It’s ‘k,” he returned.

“If you don’t want to talk about it.”

“I got dumped,” he said simply, “She fell in love with a girl. Can’t think of anything to do, yeah. My left brain knows that all love is fleeting, she’s just looking for something new.”

“Well I know how that feels,” you sympathised, “the being dumped part. I don’t think I’ve ever met her though, or Kyousuke’s girlfriend for that matter.”

He handed you a photo.

“She liked to hide behind mirages with her Ability,” he recalled fondly.

“And her girlfriend is clearly, tall, dark and handsome right?” you joked.

“Yeah,” he didn’t, “Still not surprising though, when we came out here.”

“Well you’re not the only one,” you continued, “Wanna bet Kyousuke never had a girlfriend to begin with?”

“You’re on,” at least he was smiling now.

The rest of the time, you had spent doing a tour of the neighbourhood. Well it wasn’t much of a residential area but at least you managed to map the best ways in and out, as well as other landmarks of note. There wasn’t anything outstanding in the area, and there hadn’t been a single peep out of them. Stealth was apparently their strong suit, if Teacher’s lectures on the various magical societies in the world held any truth to them.

The time is now past nightfall, the weather was clear, the date remains unchanged.

It took a while but eventually the Amakusa had to post sentries. They moved in no discernible pattern to you but it was definitely purposeful. It was really hard to focus your sight in the area, let alone the harbour. Kyousuke, having been positions in building opposite, and looking through the scope of a rifle, had no such problems. Maybe they weren’t expecting a long ranged attack to succeed.

“Open fire,” you instructed.

Kyousuke did as you asked. It wasn’t that he was particularly good at it or anything. Because everyone else had their own Abilities, you had to rely on him to be a marksman. He managed to drop two of them, out of how many you did know, before they caught on. That was when you had Asuka break down the front door, her sword drawing sparks across the pavement as she lumbered through the entrance. A dozen jumped her at once, and with a flourish of her sword, took them all on.

With the chaos starting, and whatever spell they had muddling your senses more than disrupted, you and Tadakuni got to work. The afternoon’s legwork had paid off, given that you were entering from a completely different angle. Inside, the defences weren’t particularly tough to defeat either given that they clumped together in groups now that they had an enemy they could focus on. Stealth was good and all but it hardly mattered when you simply ignored the false visuals you kept getting and focused on your Ability to navigate. Mishka fed you periodic updates, most punctuated with a clack of gun’s slide.

The Falcon was in the small office, or shack, next to the pier. Inside were another group of five, though you had no idea what they were chanting, if they were chanting at all. You nodded to Tadakuni as the two of you neared the door. He nodded back, trusting you to take the lead.

Control their movements
Make them be where you want them to be and see what you want them to see.

You put your finger to your lips before turning to open the door. It was easy to step in without making a sound. Too bad they were too busy chanting to notice. So far so good but now you knew they had set up a trap around the Falcon. There had to be given their spewing of gibberish. As soon as you grabbed it you’d have to make run for it, if it was there at all. It didn’t stand on display on a pedestal or anything. In fact, it was stashed in a small safe at the back and you let Tadakuni do his thing. It didn’t even take him more than five minutes. This was way too easy. Resting haphazardly inside was the Maltese Falcon.

Making sure that Tadakuni was well away, you reached for the Falcon. If you were going to set off a trap, whatever it was, you wanted him well out of the way just in case. Your hand passed through the threshold and disappeared. Before you could even mentally exclaim, “Ah hah, I knew it,” you were pulled in to the safe, reappearing the empty warehouse. Inside were over two dozen people, each armed with swords and melee weaponry of all kinds. It was the one in a white shirt and huge afro that spoke.

“Heh, I didn’t think it’d work so well, given that you shot two of our sentries.”

You were a thief, not a killer, so it didn’t cross your mind to slaughter everyone inside. It was a mistake in hindsight but it confirmed that whatever spell they cast had affected you and only you. Tadakuni had the sense snatch the Falcon as their guards were relaxed through a prearranged signal on the radio. Now all that was left was to get out of here in one piece.

“Not going to say anything?” Afro kept talking, “Suit yourself.”

He brandished his weapon. You had a handgun holding fifteen rounds and two more mags. Course of action?

Aside from having almost enough bullets to drop them twice over, you didn’t rate your situation very highly. Shooting up the place wasn’t the answer here. So you did the next best thing, you bluffed.

“Alright, I surrender,” you held up both your hands.

Your hearing had already stretched out, before you pretended to surrender. You counted another presence in the warehouse. It didn’t look like it was part of the Amakusa with the way it clung to the shadows. The Afro raised his eye brows but you didn’t move as he signalled his goons to relieve you of your weapons. You managed to hide your smile as they moved forward, kicking up dust. It drew your attention to the thin layer of smoke building around everyone’s ankles. Maybe this might just work out after all.

Episode 58 End. Still not done yet though so I might just not run Macross ’54 this weekend.

Car chase. The prelude will come to an end. Would you like to catch a glimpse of Kyril? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story resumes.

Sagara is pretty cool now actually. I suppose that mostly comes from having to fend for themselves now without Papa Kyril to do most of the thinking.
