YOU are Akari Takamichi, a Level 4 Pyrokineticist kickin' it old school in the big SCIENCE (also known as ACADEMY CITY), and you're currently very worried.

So worried are you that you are, in fact, pacing.

Now, most floors in Academy City are NOT fireproofed, but, fortunately for you (and anyone who might happen to be beneath you), Mato's elder sister is some sort of absurdly-popular idol or singer or some-such nonsense, and, therefore, has money out the wazoo.

She's cute, you'll give her that.

Cute enough that Nee-chan-

...You let that thought self-terminate, because not only do you not want to think about Nee-chan doing those sorts of things, but also you can't help but feel a small pang of jealousy at the notion.

And that small pang of jealousy makes you rather uneasy, if you're honest.

But you're just in worry/panic/OH-GOD-MATO-IS-BEING-SURGICALLY-ALTERED-FOR-COMBAT mode at the moment.

You're probably not a latent siscon or anything like that.

Probably.

Still, you haven't burned a rut into the floor, so that's pretty cool.

A glance at the clock tells you it's still only 10:32 AM. You really should be going on patrol this morning, say, at 11:30 or so.

If you called up Mami and explained the situation to her, you're sure she'd figure something out.

She's a surprisingly-reliable sempai, semi-questionable methodology or no.

You also question the ethics of her sleeping with two of her coworkers, but, given that they seem to be more of a hive-mind than anything else, you've stopped thinking about it.

Also, they make a cute couple.
Or... uh... triple?

They're cute together, and god knows Mami's got enough... assets... to share.

Whatever you do, you should do it soon.
Before you kill yourself worrying.

Not literally, mind, but, metaphorically or something.

The question then becomes, 'What do?'

Well, there's one surefire way to burn away the hours: WITH FIRE.

You still need to attain Level 5, after all, if you want ALL THE ICE CREAM, and you're not entirely sure what happened to your ability to make things spontaneously combust!

Thus, you need to train, to practice, and to experiment!

You reluctantly head out after realizing that testing your abilities inside of living spaces is very definitely a BAD idea.

After some deliberation, you decide to head for...
>A park; a nice and open space where you probably won't melt anything important- you'll have to watch out for kids and such, though.
>The Sol Aeternam Labs; they'll be glad to have you, but you probably won't be able to do the tests YOU want to do, and you'll be there for quite awhile.
>Komoe-sensei (wherever she is). She helped you develop your HEAT RAYS, after all, so there's no telling what she could help with!

Hmmm.
There're a couple of places you've heard about that might be useful, now that you're thinking on it.

You could hit up that new 'ESPERS-ONLY GYM' (which offers free admission to Level 4 and 5 Espers – including you, obviously), and see what it's all about.

You could also check out that shop- not the kind where one buys things, but the kind where people make stuff- that offered to pay Espers with useful abilities for any work they could help with over the summer. You're sure that you, being a Level 4 Pyrokineticist, could do some pretty useful stuff.

There's also that weird 'arena' thing you've heard about. Apparently it's a place where Espers can duke it out without holding themselves back, purportedly due to their employment of a few very talented espers with 'healing' abilities.

Or you could just try to find Komoe-chan and get a lesson in Pyrokinesis from her.

Hmm. Decisions, decisions.

You ponder on it for a bit, but eventually settle on the arena.

Apparently, it's a very up-and-coming form of entertainment, here...

And elsewhere, too, if that billboard advertizing the place with 'AS SEEN ON TV' in big, bolded red lettering in the corner is anything to go by.

The billboard otherwise looks about like you'd expect- a Luchador in a cool-looking mask leaping over a beam of some sort coming from a rather scrawny-looking girl's left eye.
It even seems to be taking place in a good old-fashioned boxing ring.

The walk to the place is short enough; it's not even ten minutes before you can see the huge, domed stadium.
As you draw nearer, you see that there are two entrances:
One with a sign labeled 'SPECTATORS' hanging over its humongous double-doors, and a long line of people of various ages waiting for entry; the other with a sign reading 'ENTRANTS' and a rather more modest and plain-looking push-bar door.

You can't help but notice that there's nobody in that second line...

You get a lot of funny looks as you enter the line-less door.

A rather generic-looking office is what greets you.
Fluorescent lights in the tiled ceiling, plain white walls, a wall lined with filing cabinets, and a rather attractive bespectacled secretary sitting at a nondescript desk, in an outfit that is both professional and just perhaps a bit too tight to hide her curves to any degree whatsoever.

She pulls a pen out of the bun her hair is pulled back into as you enter, and wordlessly hands it, along with a clipboard, to you. She then gestures to a line of moderately-comfortable-looking chairs, indicating you should sit in one.

You oblige her, then get to filling out your paperwork.

Most of the stuff starts out pretty normal- name, birth date, age, emergency contacts, job history, ability, level, and so on and so forth.

You read through the terms and conditions and agreements and waivers, all of which seem quite reasonable, and then you get to the last page.

Hrm. Four suggestions thus far. I'd call it a good fifteen-twenty in-quest minutes, if you want to cut off the brainstorming here. The more ideas presented, the longer Akari's had to think about them, and the 'sooner' Mato wakes up.

I'll probably wait another five or ten minutes before calling a vote, just to give a chance for more ideas to pop up or be presented by lurkers (we have lurkers, right? I hope and assume we do, I guess, but there's not really any way to tell, at least not that I'm aware of)

It takes you around fifteen minutes of scribbling, erasing (Academy City uses a very high-quality, very high-tech kind of ink in its... well, its ink-based things, and that ink happens to be rather easy to evaporate when you're an awesome Pyrokineticist), scribbling down something new, erasing that away, and so on and so forth.

Until you come to like what you've written down.

You hand the clipboard and pen to the prim and proper-looking lady at the desk, and she leafs through the pages rather rapidly, only seeming to spend any considerable length of time on the first and last pages- the last especially so, having taken at least a full minute of the five or so she spent going through the whole stack.

She snorts after a few moments and places the clipboard on her desk, standing up as she does so.

“Anything with an awesome coat, huh?” She makes a face you don't quite recognize and continues, “And you don't have any preferences as to whether you're a heel or a face? That seems pretty strange, coming from a Judgment officer.”

You open your mouth to explain yourself, but she cuts you off with a wave of her hand. “Don't sweat it, Takamichi-san,” she says, “You've got a solid name, and Level 4 Pyrokinesis is certain to be a crowd-pleaser. It's just a bit funny, is all.” She shrugs. “Regardless, you've definitely got potential. Let's find you a costume, first.” She leads you into a huge storage area with even more random clothes and outfits and things than your closet.

She doesn't even look back at you as she begins asking questions.

You answer them as best you can, but a lot of them seem pretty strange.

“Can you set your hair on fire?”

You confirm that you can, in fact, set things on fire, and she turns and looks at you for a few moments before nodding firmly to herself and muttering, “I've just the thing...”

You're not sure how, but she somehow managed to start changing you without you even knowing what was going on until she was almost done.

She drags you in front of a big mirror, where you see that you're wearing some sort of armor or something. Except, it's probably not very good for protection, given it doesn't cover your neck or collarbones or much anything of your chest above your modest bosom, and leaves your stomach almost entirely exposed.

Still, the color scheme is rather appropriate, and you can't help but like the look. It's a mixture of a couple of darker shades of red, some reddish-orange colors, a bit of orange, and even some yellow here and there.

You notice the lady's expectant expression in the mirror and reluctantly set your hair alight.

And you look... well, pretty darn good.

You grin, and notice she's grinning as well.

“Are you ready for your debut?”

You merely redouble the flames engulfing your head. You don't need to say anything.

“Excellent...”

You do various other little preparations before you're led out into a wide open... well, arena. The floor is covered in some sort of fake grass , you think (you don't know why it would be bright red otherwise), and there are several structures of varying make and composition here and there. From wooden huts with thatched roofing to stone temples with marble pillars to what looks like a two- or three-story building made mostly of glass or some other, similarly-transparent material.

The stands are a good thirty feet up a solid-looking wall that surrounds the 'pit'.

The arena, in other words, is absolutely huge.

The commentator's voice rings out with impressive clarity from above. “IN THE RED CORNER STANDS OUR NEWEST COMPETITOR! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE THE FIERY, THE UNQUENCHABLE, THE RED-HOT... SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL! IIIIIIIIIIINVIIIIICTUSSSSS!”

You flare up brightly as he bellows your name, sending a pillar of smoke and fire a good ways into the air as a result.

...Conveniently enough, whoever made your 'armor' had the foresight to fireproof it rather well, so, there's that.

Your blood's pounding in your veins as the announcer continues, “AND, IN THE BLUE CORNER-”

“ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE HER OPPONENT: THE THING THE BOOGEYMAN CHECKS FOR UNDER HIS BED EVERY NIGHT, THE MONSTER YOU SEE IF YOU STARE INTO THE ABYSS FOR TOO LONG, THE UNHOLIEST ABOMINATION EVER TO SET FOOT IN OUR ARENA...”

The crowd goes nearly silent as the voice pauses.

“THE DARK LORD!”

A shadow creeps up the walls of the side of the arena opposite you, casting a large portion entirely into darkness.

A deep, booming voice that is most certainly not the commentator laughs maniacally as the lights on that side of the ceiling start to sputter, crackle, and flicker out.

And that's a LOT of lights.

“CAN OUR POOR, UNFORTUNATE NEWCOMER HOPE TO SURVIVE A BATTLE WITH THIS MALICIOUS FORCE OF EVIL? OR WILL SHE, TOO, BE CONSUMED BY DARKNESS, NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN?”

The evil-sounding voice cackles again, and the darkness spreads further, even going so far as to reach up to the ceiling of the arena where the lights have gone out.

You can't see whoever your opponent is, as there's a moderately-sized hill in the center of the arena. Atop that hill sits what is by far the largest of the aforementioned stone-and-pillars 'temples'.

What do you do?

You recall from your training that being behind something is generally a good way to avoid being horribly murdered or what-have-you, and dash over to the long, brick building ahead of you and to your right. You press your back against the near wall when you reach it, then, after catching your breath, you peek around the corner.

The dark spooky stuff hasn't expanded, at least as far as you can tell, so that's probably a good thing.
Maybe.

It could also be a horrible thing, you suppose.

If you could just see past that hill and temple, this'd be a lot easier.

Also, if the maniacal laughing would stop, that'd be pretty cool with you.

Maybe you could just blow that stupid temple-thing sky-high?

Well, you can't see any reason NOT to blow the temple to smithereens, and that's the next best thing to an actual reason to do so! You step out from behind your cover and raise your hands. With your left, you begin blasting away at the pillars supporting the temple's large roof with rainbow rays of HEAT AND JUSTICE. With your right, you begin snapping and blowing things up with...

Well, you just kinda started blowing stuff up, to be completely frank.

Seemed like the appropriate thing to do at the time.

The crowd seems confused, but they certainly enjoy your display of awesome, rainbow-might and power, and soon enough their cheers drown out the still-happening-at-regular-intervals manical laughter.

Only for the sudden critical failure of the whole stone structure that used to look an awful lot like a temple to drown them out in turn, the thunderous roar of a humongous stone roof dropping down onto a humongous stone building (and crushing it in the process) so loud that there's actually silence for a few moments afterwords... until the cheering and chanting of “SOL, SOL, SOL” picks up, even louder than the first time.

As the dust and debris clears from the air where the temple used to stand (and now lies), you find that you can see a good deal more of the spooky shadowy stuff...

But there's no trace of this 'Dark Lord' guy anywhere.

Then, a foot comes flying at your face out of nowhere.

The foot belongs to a tall and slender man, clad in a jet-black suit.

You duck under his leg and he completes his revolution, bringing his foot back down to rest perfectly in place beside the other one, like a soldier standing at attention.

On instinct, you set your fist on fire and attempt to drive it into the man's face.

… and, to the shock of you, the crowd, and even the commentator, you miss.

The 'Dark Lord' cackles like mad as he sidesteps a your punch (not that he needed to) and sweeps your legs out from under you with a movement too fast for you to see, slamming you down into the fake grass with an over-head strike from his clenched-together hands.

Everything goes dark for a few moments, your vision flickering in an extremely disorienting way, but you manage to get to your feet anyways.

Your vision comes back to you just in time for you to watch him pulling back his fist.

And it flickers out again before his knuckles connect with your jaw.

The only thought you can eke out before your consciousness fades is that Mato isn't even awake to save you right now.

Maybe this wasn't your brightest idea.
