>Disclaimer: OP is not the Humble Writefag, this is not a replacement for the Teen Titans Quest. It is, hopefully, a decent placebo.
>This quest takes place in a world where the Marvel and DC characters coexist. Expect ages, places, people to be somewhat different than canon as a result.
>Vote cap is set at 7 to begin; to vote please link to the post you're voting on with the letter of your vote, or - in case of open actions - the action you wish to take. Thank you.

It's August 3rd, 2003.

Jump City is about as crazy as it usually is - or so you assume. You've never been here before. But the stereotypes seem to hold true; a lot of tech junkies that survived the dotcom crash, a lot of older cars clogging the streets, tourists wearing red fleecies (because they assume that 'California' means 'constantly 80 degrees', instead of the 60 that's the norm on this part of the coast) and - you just passed your fifth food truck shelling out delicious-looking tacos.

Not that you're interested in that, per se. You have bigger fish to fry.

Last month, they finally opened Titans Tower. Home to one of the world's first publicly-funded academies for metahumans. Word is that there's still space in the classes, so you're hoping to get in.

At least finding the tower isn't hard. That's what happens when you get Lexcorp and Stark together on a project - an utter abandonment of subtlety.

You've spent the last few years - everything since that incident with the fortuneteller at the stupid parking lot carnival - knowing things that you really shouldn't know. You can extrapolate ridiculous amounts of information from small clues, and you have a sixth sense that alerts you when you're in danger. Which is all kind of cool, but at times your enhanced awareness feels like a bunch of voices all shouting in your head at once.

Hence, wanting to join the Titans Academy. Hopefully they'll be able to get your head on straight. It's only logical, right?

The winding path up to the tower is lined by grassy gardens; a few students are out doing work, or just goofing off, and -

>DANGER

Your senses flare up. Danger. Mild. Coming from the left. Risk extremely minor. Wait, so why the hell is it flaring over something that -

The confusion is enough to distract you from actually acting on your sense, and you're whacked in the head by a hacky-sack.

"Sorry, dude!" A voice calls from behind you and to the left. "Pass it back this way?" A kid with green skin, a shortish girl with ridiculous pink sunglasses, and a huge - downright massive - black guy in a hoodie, the first of whom is the one hollering at you.

"Here y'go!" You lay up the knit sack on your foot, give it a few gentle boots - juggling it in the air in front of you briefly - and then kick it back in the green kid's direction. He laughs, letting it bounce off his chest before kicking it back to the girl to his side, and their game continues as if nothing had happened; you doubt they notice you giving a wave in their direction - but sure enough, the towering black guy takes a hand from his hoodie pocket long enough to wave back at you.

A hand that looks like it was designed by Steve Jobs, all glistening white polymer and stainless steel. HUH.

The door to the foyer of Titans Tower is open, and you walk in without incident. An ugly looking robot-thing sits behind the information desk. To your right, a display case has been filled with press clippings about the Academy and the opening ceremony. Across the way, there's a pair of elevators, and doors lead into fairly well lit hallway to either side of the foyer.

And you quickly realize you're not sure exactly where to go.

>A: Ask the sketchy-looking droid at the information desk.
>B: Check out the press clippings.
>C: Determine the best way to go through use of your powers and any minor hints that may be in the lobby.

Goddamn this thing is ugly. It's bargain basement R2-D2 ripoff ugly. It's straight-out-of-a-Hong Kong-electronics-store ugly. And the worst part is that despite the aesthetics, it's obviously pretty decent quality.

>"How can I help you, sir?"
"Uhhh... yeah, I'm just looking for directions to the offices - is the dean in?"
>"One moment!"
A little light blinks on and off under the robot's faceplate.
>"Ah, you are not presently a student?"
"That's why I was hoping to talk to him."
>"So I see. Professor Parker is in the middle of a meeting, but you're welcome to wait for him. His office is to the right, at the end of the hallway - you really can't miss it. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

A wins it by one.
You consider waffling about in the foyer, but - nah. There's nothing around here that you won't get later on, and the article about Spider-Man's opening speech is probably mildly interesting, but you saw it on TV already.

The door is closed, but you can hear discussion through it - a few low mutterings, nothing more. It seems that they don't fear for security enough to soundproof the office properly. You make yourself as comfortable as possible in the cheap plastic-and-steel-tube chair; thankfully, you don't have to wait that long. The door pops open, and a girl stomps out, grumbling under her breath.

No, scratch that. 'Girl' doesn't seem quite right, but 'living deviantArt OC' sounds a bit too crude. The gray skin, screaming pink hair fashioned into hornlike shapes, and purple sweatshirt do make her stand out like a sore thumb, though - even more than the green kid outside. At least his hair doesn't look like it took six hours to gel.

"WHAT?" She barks at you, before stomping off again. Eesh. Touchy.

From inside the headmaster's office, you hear him clear his voice. "Waiting for something?" The question, clearly rhetorical, is followed up by him waving you in. "Come on in, close the door and make yourself comfortable. Something I can help you with?"

So this is Peter Parker. Active in superheroics since the 70s. Former member of the JLA (before they disbanded), the Avengers, the FF, and pretty much every superhero group worth mentioning.

He looks a little older than he sounds. Still doesn't look his age...

"You made a pretty good choice. I can't make any promises about how your powers are going to react, but I can at least promise we'll teach you how to deal with them better. There's only one real downside..."
"Downside?"
"You're going to have a ton of paperwork to fill out." He sets a stack down in front of you; you keep talking as you start filling the forms out.
>>34862884

"How bad was it?"
"From her perspective, severely annoying. From my perspective... almost as annoying because she's not going to stop bugging me about it."
>>34862830
The question rises in your head, but you bash it down. No. Just no.

As you finish the paperwork, he feeds it through a scanner; a moment later you hear a 'ta da' sound effect.

"And that's the background check coming back clear. You're tentatively in." He slides you a plain white card. "There's your elevator key. You're on the fifth floor - yours is the only open room. Should be easy to find. I'll have a class schedule up to your room tonight... He offers you a hand, and you shake it eagerly.

Before you leave, another question pops into your head. He leans back in his desk chair. "We have a few lecturers that aren't verified yet... guys that have said they're interested, but haven't committed. Right now, the main staff is myself, Peegee, Ted Kord, and Mike Carter."
"Peegee? Wait, you mean Power Girl?"
"One and the same."
"How did you drag them away from the JLI?" The team is the most prominent outside of the US, with good cause.
"Best to ask them about that. Booster and Beetle have been looking to get off active duty for a while, but I think Peegee had some issues with the team leadership."

B takes it
You decide to take a quick glance around, just to see what there is to see.
The bottom floor seems to consist mostly of empty offices. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle's are in the same hallway as Professor Parker's, but neither of them are in. There's one that you assume belongs to Power Girl, but it's pretty empty, and there's no nameplate set up yet. It seems that you'll have to use the elevator to get around to most of your classes - or the stairwell, which requires the same key card. Deciding for the quicker route, you take the stairs.

The basement is divided into eight small lecture halls, plus a full gym - you're kind of amazed that they got this much down here. Then again, the classrooms fit maybe 20 at a time. One of the rooms is in use - and locked. You make a mental note to avoid being late.

Going upstairs, the second floor is locked off, and won't open for your key. When you swipe it a second time, your danger sense starts to flare up - yeah, you're not going to try that again. A sign states that this is the 'Networking and Server rooms'.

The third floor consists of a student lounge; the fourth and fifth floors are housing, so this is the end of the road, unless there's subbasements you can't get to in the stairwell.

The lounge seems like a pretty nice place; there's a big screen TV with several game systems beneath it, a full kitchen, a huge couch, and a wall-filling bookshelf. There are a few students hanging out; Jinx, the one you bumped into earlier, is sulking at the counter on a barstool, sipping what looks like a milkshake. She seems like she's cooled off. Another gray skinned girl (maybe her sister?) is sitting cross-legged in midair in front of a picture window overlooking the bay, either meditating or sleeping. And on the sofa, leaning across a coffee table, a black guy with dreadlocks and a blue overcoat is in the middle of a card game with a perky, preppy-looking girl with a brown ponytail.

The couch is a little too inviting. You plop down a short distance away from the guy in the dreadlocks, glancing down at the cards... which are covered in dots, chinese characters, and green lines.
"So what's this?"
"Two-hand twelve-card mahjong." He gives you a sidelong smirk. "It's about half a point removed from calvinball with cards, but it's kind of addictive." He flips a card down to the table, and the girl next to him groans. Clearly not what she was looking for. "Haven't seen you around before."
"Yeah, I just signed up-"
"Sweet! The more people on the teams, the better." The brunette grins at you. "I'm Kitty, and this is Virgil. And... I'm out! Self-draw, half-flush, all triplets!"

"Yeah, until fights start breaking out over which team is the best."

"Yeah, key word being 'yet'. Betcha some hothead's going to go overboard with it."

"You should get a schedule soon." Virgil picks his hand up, looking his cards over. "It's basically two classes in the morning, one in the afternoon. If you test low on the entrance exam, you might have some accelerated stuff to do in independent study."

"Professor Parker does most of the teaching himself. He has Booster doing history, Mister Kord doing science classes, and Kara doing gym-"
"Kara?"
"Power Girl." Huh. Somehow, you never caught her real name. "Professor Parker does the law and ethics courses, the science courses that Mister Kord doesn't do, and a lot of one-on-one tutoring for power control."
"...cool. Anything else I should know?"
"Don't eat anything in the fridge that has a name on it, but anything else is fair game."
"Alright. So - what team are you guys on?"
"The team names are still up in the air-"
"Because we can never seem to agree on them."
"But we usually call ourselves Young Justice. Kinda helps that we all want to go into metahuman securities."
"...you mean superheroing?"
"Same diff. There are four teams right now. We've got the housing for two more, just not the students." Kitty holds up her fingers, counting them off.
"There's us, the Specialists, the Legion, and the New Guys... which you'll be on, if you're on the fifth floor."

I'm just kidding. I don't care who we romance so long as it's well written.
>>
>>34865639
"Hey, we're all new here." Virgil smirks. "One month under our belts at the most. I think they just didn't want to think of a serious name yet."
"Fair enough. So can you deal me into the next hand?"
"Uh - sure! Have you ever played before?"
"No, but I'll fake it." Twelvecardsandamandatory wild card makefoursets threeeach runsandtriplets additionalhandslikely - your powers start to work through the rules based on the discards you can see. It's kind of a bastard child of poker and gin rummy. Virgil goes out on his hand, with nothing special besides a fully concealed hand, and you're dealt...
...an incredible ball of crap.
Your power goes into overtime figuring the patterns out; everything seems to fade just a little, and -
"Out." Oh, wait. There it is. "Seven pairs - that's a legal one, right?"
"...yyyyeah. I thought you said you had never played this before?" Kitty seems suspicious now.
"I haven't."
"Are you hustling us?"
"No!"
"Good. Because we're not actually betting anything." A little bit of a smile, and you know that she was just joking with you. Or at least you suspect it. You end up winning the next hand, and then losing (unavoidably) when Virgil deals into Kitty's hand of Thirteen Orphans, busting out and ending the game.

"And we've all learned a lesson here." Virgil stands up, stretching. You have, certainly. You can figure out the quickest way to win a game with your powers, but there does come a point when the deck is just stacked too high against you. And for those circumstances, you'd have to cheat outright.

If you wanted to win that way. You know. Hypothetically.

Of course, you don't say that. You do say "What lesson is that?"

"Never try to beat the Jewish girl from Brooklyn at mahjong." She flicks a card at his head.

"You'll be playing again tomorrow."

"Probably."

It's getting on to late afternoon and early evening; what will you do now?

Up the stairs you go again. It's not that you don't like elevators. Noooo. Not at all. You just... y'know. Don't. At all.

The fifth floor has a hallway with four doors, two of which have wipe-off boards stuck to them. Each one is labeled. Across from you are the Legion, and - yep - your door simply reads 'The New Guys'.
Also, someone's drawn a dick beneath it. Awesome.
You nudge the door open, unslinging your satchel. Everything you have is in there; it's not a lot. A cheap tablet computer, a few changes of clothes, a camera, and your winter coat. It's all you really need, though. That and the bank card in your back pocket.
"Hey, new dude!" The green kid from this morning is there, sprawled out on the sofa. "Welcome to El casa del titans. And... y'know, sorry about the sack to the head earlier."
"It's cool. Not like you could hurt someone with that." Which just makes it weirder that your powers went off - kind of makes you wonder if it was also going nuts when you tried to get into the second floor.
"Yeah. Not unless it got lodged in your windpipe or somethin'... oh, I'm Gar." He offers a hand, straight up. You give him a high five. rather than keeping him hanging.
"So where's everyone else?"
"Oh, uh - lessee. Starfire's in her room - I think she's working on some homework. Vic's in the lab, and - hey, Jube!"
"Yeah?"
"New guy's rooming with us!" The girl with the spectacularly 90's glasses from earlier leans out and throws a wave at you.
"Nice to meet ya."
"Jube?"
"Jubilee." You try to suppress your reaction. It's a little hard. She must be from the valley... unless it's a nickname. It has to be a nickname.
"...hey, is Jinx in her room?"
"Nah, she's in town." Oh, you're rooming with HER. Lovely.

"Maybe so, but I want to get it done."
"Fair enough. Just send it down the tube when you're done."
"...tube?"
"You'll see it."
===
He's right. It's hard to miss.
Your rooms are equipped with a desk, replete with computer (running JarvOS - Stark clearly won the bid for the tower's IT), a bed, a midsized closet, and an old-school vacuum tube system, with a switchboard for sending things to different rooms. Most of them are unlabeled; your room is 5-12, and the office is 1-1.
With your power, the test takes all of twenty minutes; you see the connections before your brain finishes registering the question. When you send it off with a WHOOSH, you're sure you've aced it. And that leaves the rest of the evening open. Judging by the sound of it, the rest of the team is arriving... what now?

"So was I right, or was I right?"
"You were dead right." You shake your head a little, as you check out the other guys you'll be rooming with. Jinx looks about how she looked earlier, minus the pout - in fact, she's grinning in a way that for most people would imply that she was about to rip you off, or eat you whole. The huge guy from the hacky-sack game is there - with his hood down this time. And holy fuck. Half his face is metal. Vic, you suppose. That leaves Starfire - who's even more colorful than Jinx. Orange skin, green sclera and irises, red hair, and a screaming purple outfit - a blouse and one of those flowy, loose hippie skirts. "I'm getting hungry - you guys all want to get something? It's on me." You can afford to splurge. The orange skinned girl lets out a whooping cheer, fists pumping into the air - as she proceeds to hover a good six inches off the ground.
"Yes! Let us hit the town!" She has a distinct accent, but you can't place it.
"Star, Star... chill." Jinx pats her back - she can't reach her shoulder from where she's sitting. Actually, she probably couldn't even without Starfire popping into the air - the girl is pretty tall. "I'm in if everyone else is."
"...it's free food. You have to ask?"

And that seems to have been a very good idea.

Hey could we potentially hack the school computers and systems with our superhuman intuition and danger sense making note of all the holes we do find and giving them to whoever is in charge of the systems to fix, because i think with our high intelligence and superhuman intuition we could do some scary stuff like pick someone mentally apart with their fears and vunerabilities in a conversation and fake being a psychic or a mind reader, we can also probably guess passwords for computers and so on or just outright use our danger intuition while hacking to stay away from traps and such and from tripping allarms.

Staying with this thread for a little while longer. We can begin another one if we must.
Your name is William, and you are a metahuman. You're still coming to grips with what, exactly, that means, but

at least you seem to be in the right place for it.
The key word there is 'seem'.
You're presently in a small, run down Mexican restaurant that everyone swears makes the best food you'll have

in your life. The fact that it's only a fifteen minute walk from Titans Tower helps to sell it, you suppose -

although you're kind of confused by the fact that they put french fries in their burritos. It sounds delicious,

but... weird.
Then again, Starfire is sipping on a bottle of mustard. So weird is kind of relative here.
"So lemme ask you something." Vic gestures to you with one of those huge, gleaming hands. "You're here mostly

because you don't want your powers to get anyone hurt."
"Least of all myself."
"Have you thought about what you want to do with them?" Huh. Now there's a question.

I mean I would have wanted a normal life but that's not exactly an option now, and Peter Parker is always going on with that whole power and responsibility thing.

Peoria is a city in Illinois. It is very boring.

"I just want to do something good with my life. Something productive. I don't know what yet." Jubilee tilts her bottle of Jarritos at you in a toast.
"You're lucky, you know that? I mean, if you've got a power that you can use for something besides the hero thing..."
"Kind of. Low level precog, heightened awareness." It's a huge oversimplification, but it works. "What about you?"
"I can generate plasma."
"...you mean superheated gas?"
"Bingo. It's good for blowing stuff up, but that's about it. Unless I want to get real precise, and get a career as an arc welder." She leans on one arm, smirking a little. Which is when Starfire decides to put her two cents in.
"But is not the life of the hero the best life there is? Protecting the lives of your adoring populace... ensuring that they will be there tomorrow... smiting the wicked - it is the life of the conqueror-king, without the worry of politics!" Jeez, she has a romantic view of things. Curiously, Jinx nods along as she speaks.
"I wouldn't go that far, but it's a sweet racket if you can get into it."
Someone calls out that the meals are done; Gar hustles over to the counter to pick them up before anyone else can react.
"Well - whatever you decide to do.." Vic muses, "The professors can help out with it."
>FREE ACTION - ask what you will.

"so for no reason at all, what are the policies on dating at the academy?"
>>
>>34871472
Proper round of introductions, just so everyone is on the same page. Name, power, hopes and dreams, that whole jazz.
>>
>>34871515
The question slips out before you can think about it too much. Jubilee blinks. "Uh... I... have no freaking clue. Jinx is our team specialist in that regard..."
"And Jinx is saying 'no freaking way'. Magic 'fuel' tends to be things that connect in a symbolic way to something else. I don't know what you'd want to fuel with THAT."
>>34871567
Cyborg grins. "I wanna be a hero. Gar and I are gonna see about getting into a team together... maybe the League, maybe the Avengers. Star... she's got plans offworld-"
"Not so!"
"Your homeworld doesn't need you?" Oh. Alien. HUH. Now the pieces are falling together - you assumed that she was a metahuman, but slight diamond shape to the pupils indentations on cheeks follicles formerly whiskersfelinidcapableofpurring?perhaps and-
DAMMIT you snap yourself out of the intuition-haze before it gets too deep. Biology is one of those rabbit holes you can fall down forever. You missed part of what she was saying. "...going to be taken care of by my uncle, so I should be able to stay here."
"Damn." Jinx laughs, a muted giggle. Her eyes are even more feline than Starfire's but - and you stop yourself there with a little focus. "I'm not sure what the hell I'll be doing. Maybe I'll go for law school... try to get into SHIELD." Jubilee groans.
"You'd make a terrible spy. I know I'm going to end up working as a hero, and I don't really care who that's with. As long as I've got some way to use these things that won't get me arrested..."
"Meal's up!" Gar sets a huge platter down with everyone's plates on it. They did not tell you that the burritos would be the size of your head.
(CONTINUED)
>>
>>34871805
"...crap, yeah, we haven't done that yet!" Gar flops back. "Garfield Logan, AKA Beast Boy. I can shapeshift into animals, and I wanna spend twenty years as a hero before retiring to run a wildlife preserve."
"Jubilation Lee. I... shoot plasma." She holds her hands up, in a way that implies she isn't sure why she's saying that again. "And I hope I won't get expelled for missing class too often? Does that work?"
"I'm Jinx... no surname. And I have a natural affinity for chaos magic."
"I am the Princess Koriand'rr of Tamaran, or Starfire to use my translated name. I possess supreme strength, the ability to project energy bolts, the gift of flight, a quartet of stomachs, and-"
"And other alien stuff." Gar puts in.
"SO much more! And I hope that I am able to serve my adopted home for a long while, and that I am able to one day gain enough influence to topple certain governments in direct manner. And friend Victor?" He sighs.
"Vic Stone, and I'm a cyborg. Woo. I want to figure out a way to replace my bits with modular components, and I want to finish building my baby."
"...your what?" You can make an educated guess, but...
"He's got a half-built car in the tower's garage." Gar clarifies. "It's gorgeous, but-"
"But it's my project. So I'll finish it on my own, thank you."
>>34871736
Jinx bursts into giggles again. "Suuuure. No reason at all."
"I think the rule is 'dating is fine, but don't let the professors catch you having sex'...and with Peegee as our gym teacher, she'd know." Jubilee mutters. "...so dating aside, what do you normally get up to when you're not in class?"

"Getting whacked in the back of the head by a hacky sack." You deadpan; that gets a few snickers out of most of the group, and a blank stare from Jinx and Starfire. "I'm a little bit of a gamer. Video games, poker, D&D, that kind of thing... I used to have a thing for trying to beat rigged carnival games. Aside from that... I like to tinker with electronics." You've also read up on alchemy a bit, but you haven't been able to get enough actual, accurate information. By which you mean 'everything so far has been new-age hoax shite', so it hardly bears mentioning.
"You're gonna like Professor Ted. Y'know, Blue Beetle? He's a total tech junkie." Vic takes another huge bite of his meal, stifling him again - for all of a second before-
