"Fish probably wish to be free of water too sometimes" -- A Discourse On Self-Governance, Idependence and Other Sedicious Heresies

[X] Never mind, keep listening.

I am Maria of House Antioch, the House of Seekers. Seeking sometimes needs asking. Sometimes it also takes listening. Like now, so no interrupting now. That would be rude. When a friend -cause that's what she is- talks you should listen after all, ESPECIALLY when they have trouble saying it.

I seek her gaze, but she stares straight ahead. Hmm. Would it be okay if I… yes. Yes, this is just the situation that allows such things. My hand finds hers resolutely and I squeeze. Ha! Perfect reaction, her head whips around, colours playing through her eyes too fast to make out before they settle on green -is that how they normally are?- ringed with pink.

"Lady Maria this is… not proper". What? Oh. Oh! Right. I withdraw my hand. Normally I'd be emberassed, but right now I'm beyond caring. Some small voice in my head tells me just how much I'll want to die for this later, but I put it into a dark paperbag and stuff it into a corner. No time for pesky voices.

How did Pa do it? Ah right. Rise one eyebrow, smile juuuust the slightest bit and twirl your hand a bit. Ha! PERFECT investigator po-- somewhere to my right someone seems to choke on their tongue. Never mind, Eriadne seems unimpressed beyond recoiling a little and narrowing her eyes. I guess practice makes perfect even here?

"Apologize". Now that was pretty hard to hear but I'm pretty sure she said it. Ram I fee cautions? Like a tax or something?

"So what do we do now? I mean, you have a plan and all, I can see that much. What are these romee things?"

Were that too many questions at once? Hmm, whatever, she can take it I'm sure.

"Ram-i-fi-ca-tions, Lady Maria. It means that. You know what? Some other time. To be brief, the 'Abberation Barrier' rote brings with it the requirement of paying tribute -you could call it saying thank you or paying something in return- to Akazu. I was, unfortunately, too distracted by the, ah, circumstances to properly inform you".

"What this means now is that we are required to travel to him in order to make up for our failures".

Hm. Oh. Well, I guess it's pretty nice of him to help us, so a thank you wouldn't be a problem, right? I can see Evangelyne move in out of the corner of my eyes.

"Uhm, okay. Let's go say sorry, then. I'm sure he'll understand!!" Eriadne sighs heavily.

By day, he is as a glacier, as slow and sullen as can be. So slow, that he moves backwards. But by night, he learns what it means to feel the need for speed. He is Fast!Hex, the hero we deserve.
>>
>>34869093
Aberration Barrier Level XI [47/100] [1st evolution] (This spell is classed as a Channelling-Type Force Rote and therefore consumes a small amount of Toughness while increasing Drain. Calling upon an enigmatic being only known as AKAZU, Maria creates a hexagon of glimmering, pulsating white light that causes an intense feeling of dread in those that look at it.
> Destroys spells that impact it and acts as a solid barrier against physical attacks. The spell effect is about 30cm (1~ foot) in diameter. When within line of sight it can be moved at the speed of 1 meter per second as long as it stays no more than 140 cm from Maria's centre of mass, at which point she loses control over it until she comes back within range.

"Eriadne?"

"Yes?"

"We'll make it. I know that. I know we can do it. You'll watch out for me, and I'll watch out for you. That's what friends do, isn't it? Maybeyoudontseemelikethatyetbut I wanna give my best. Okay?"

"…very well. Evangelyne, we'll be in need of you now". The other girl just grunts, then begins to explain.

"What we're doing here isn't really supposed to happen yet, but we really can't wait to get teachers, explain how we forgot instructions and yadda yadda yadda, so we'll send you two directly there so you can, I dunno, have a little chat or something". She's babbling, and I'm pretty sure it's cause she's more nerveaous thanshe wants us to believe. Time to reassure her a bit.

"We'll be fine, thank you".

"Are you sure of that?"

"I don't lie, Evangelyne". That gives her pause. Good. The heady smell of the incese sticks has begun to fill the room and I feel a little bit removed from myself.

"Then… very well". The girl inhales, then I feel the power in the world shift as she begins to hum, a song beyond words, a prayer above words, a plea to something that needs no names to describe itself.

"Just look at the flame, Lady Maria. It will guide us". I nod, focusing my gaze on the tiny light. It seems like the smoke has begun to dance around the two of us, the grey eddying around the circle like a swarm of fish around a rock.

From somewhere, new words come to me, and as one Eriadne and I begin to speak, guided as much by the power as we guide it.

"Road untravelled, goal unknown, age beyond meaning unveiled to reveal a path to shores unseen..."

The room, the floor, and even the universe slowly fall away and fade… into emptiness.

[X] Stay still
[X] Call out for Eriadne
[X] Fumble blindly

The featureless grey seems to carry me, my body floating blindly in the endless expanse, a leaf cast adrift on the winds of time to endlessly fly freely forevermore
and… no, there was someone close to you. Someone you wanted to protect.

Yes. Remember. A voice. When you look for someone you cannot see you use a voice. Do you have a voice? Now there is a good question, Maria. Do you have a voice and do you know how to use it? Yes? Good? Show me.

Show me how to use this "voice" of yours. Really, it's such a ludicrous concept. Ha! Ha! "Voice", right. As if such a thing could exist. Who needs a voice without something to say, hmm? What, you have something to say? Interesting. Why aren't you saying it? No, no, this isn't a dare, I'm quite sure you could use your voice if you had one. Not that that's likel--

"Eriadne!" I take control of my voice -how could I have ever forgotten how to use that, silly me- and thoughts, making sure they stay where they're supposed to be, or at least as much as they ever are.

"ERIADNE!" Does my voice even reach anywhere here?

I fumble around, fighting hard to keep the panic from rising.

"Mar-- Lady Maria!" A hand grabs my shoulder and Eriadne's form emerges from the clinging mists.

On one hand it's comforting to have her near it's also REALLY strange since her "up" seems to be my "behind", no other feature of the landscape -if you could call it that-giving a hint of any idea resembling normal ideas of up or down.

>>

Oh vey, time for TRANSPARENT INFORMATION POLICY. What, yea yea that wasn't funny. Anyway, gonna continue in two or three since I couldn't get it done before leaving. Meanwhile, I would like to discuss such heresies such as martial utility with you.

-Alacrity Branch: Reaction and movement speed.
-Investigation Branch: Code and lock breaking, underworld knowledge, spy techniques
-Manipulation Branch: How the World interacts with you.
Powers things such as Cat Fall, Soaring Jump or Spellbreak.
-Atavism Branch: Strength, endurance and resistance beyond that of common people. Usually at odds with Manipulation and Investigation
-Warlore: Weapons, techniques and stances.

Feels a bit bad, not conceptually but in practice. Suffers from both a little 'special snowflake' feeling and the fact that, similar to intelligence powers, it requires the MC to be smarter than the players which can make things weird.

Sounds pretty cool.

Obviously can easily see this, not sure it's awesome enough for /tg/ though.
>Warlore
A pretty good bet for popular, not a huge fan myself.

I'll say Manipulation>Alacrity>Atavism

>>34885615
Manipulation seems cool. Especially Spellbreak.

Other than that I couldn't really say. I think I'd prefer a more Alacrity build over Altavism, especially since it doesn't jive with Manipulation.
>>
>>34885615
>-Alacrity Branch: Reaction and movement speed.
>-Investigation Branch: Code and lock breaking, underworld knowledge, spy techniques
>-Manipulation Branch: How the World interacts with you.

>-Atavism Branch: Strength, endurance and resistance beyond that of common people. Usually at odds with Manipulation and Investigation
>-Warlore: Weapons, techniques and stances.
ALL OF THEM

Yesterday I jumped off my chair and broke my legs. This is unrealistic garbage.
>>
>>34885615
Manipulation.

Investigation sounds cool but I have to agree with what this anon says >>34885707 I'm also not entirely sure the quest will develop in a way to utilize it so much. The rest just don't have that wow factor to them. They're basic martial skill branches.

This one sound the most like Wuxia shit, which I love so I'd have to go with that, other than that I think Warlore
>>
>>34885707
>>34885753
While I get the concerns, Investigation doesn't so.much turn you into Monk as allowing you to, say, talk in underworld dialects, utilize EIT (lighthearted fun they said…) or read the cyphers used by
beggars. Will have to think, what's been said here, IRC and ask.FM basically motivated me to extend the way non-magical power(s) work(s) in order to facilitate a somewhat sound leveling method and organization.

Gotta use non quest hours somehow, no?
>>
>>34885877
That makes sense. I kind of want to pick it just because GUARD but I don't know if I want to make it the priority, either. Especially since Wuxia shit sounds fun and Investigation seems a passive set of tools we'll forget we have half the time.
>>
Manipulation>Warlore/Alacrity>the rest

That's how I'd prioritize.
>>

Yes, but updating CCQ

Would Maria really waterboard somebody?
>>
>>34885877
Is Manipulation weeaboo wuxia fightan?

I would want to pick the one that would best compliment Maria's future witchan path, but without knowing where she'll go I worry about getting redundant abilities, like would there be any point to getting wuxia jumps if we could just fly?
>>
>>34886108
I thought flight was actually really difficult.

At the very least, a cool jump would be easier to pull off on the fly over a flight spell.

Aclarity and Atavism

>>
>>34886278
Everyone would endlessly bitch about the Witchbreaker. Endlessly.
>>
>>34885615
Manipulation, because protecting people from spells is important when you are protecting your friends, as well as being able to survive unpleasant situations better.

Then Alacrity, because hitting faster=hitting harder, and it works well with our assessment ability. Being able to stop yourself from hitting someone the instant before impact is always a great intimidation too.

Then Investigation, because understanding how the shadowy world works allows you to protect people better and get information faster, as well as escaping from same and preventing same from getting the people you care about. Being smarter is never a bad thing.
>>
>>34885615
I'd pick Manipulation if I was sure Spellbreak wasn't Anti-magic, I'm not really a fan of that

I'd kind of just like to stick with being good at hitting things with our stick so Warlore
>>

>-Warlore: Weapons, techniques and stances.

>-Investigation Branch: Code and lock breaking, underworld knowledge, spy techniques
Because guardsman's girl
>>
>>34886547
Maria can't learn Spellbreaker stuff. That's witch-hunter territory.

>>Can we visit the witchbreaker dojo if we get enough Mireille points? Do they need magic to practice their canceling on?
>Yes. Not really but they wouldn't mind having you. Uh, but no, you (or anyone with any kind of magical or supernatural "pollution") can't learn their Spellbreaking ability. It's been tried. Yes, you can learn more Rites, Moves and Stances. No, they won't at all be happy to try and add any new Deep Training, no.

>Anything magical is easily influenced by magic. Say you're using a spell to keep a door closed. If a witch knows what she's doing, she can mess with it till the door opens. If you're using a proper lock things will be more complicated as she'd have to find a spell or methodology to cope with the much more stable, corporeal Truth of the lock, rather than the fairly transient Lie of the spell.

TL;DR: Magitech is like unencrypted Wireless Enabled devices in Shadowrun. No wonder nobody likes it.
>>
>>34890593
Ah, so the best approach is to make the door doubly secure; lock it physically and magically. A caster can defeat the spell but is stymied by the lock; a locksmith can defeat the mechanics but is stopped by the spell. You need both to defeat the defense.
>>
>>34890593
If that was the only problem, people would like magic. Most people aren't witches or witchbreakers, after all, so they couldn't get past the magically locked door at all.

>Yes, in some ways they are. A Witch that isn't actively resisting it is easier to curse for example. Magical objects have a similar problem, which is why few people want to use them too much unless they use magic themselves.
But magic is bad for you or something. They'd catch magic cooties. ... Actually, it probably has to do with diseases having aetherial components, come to think of it.

[X] Hold onto Eriadne
[X] Comfort each other
[X] Try to search for Akazu
[X] Embracing the silence to conquer the dark.

I spin -no idea how- and now "stand" close to Eriadne, my body close to hers.

"Eriadne?"

"Yes?"

"I… we need to hold each other or we'll get lost". Like this. Explain it plainly and how it is. Can you even blush in this place? I can't quite make out her face, I floating "behind her", but she's at least not pushing me away.

"Very… well then. It shall be as you said. It would not do get lost now". I take this as my cue to wrap my arms around her from behind, the other girl staying very still. She's, well, "warm" might not be the right word. But she feels real. Solid. Like the only true thing in a world filled with lies and vagueness that tries to pull us in as w-- enough, enough, I don't even know half these words.

"We need to search for him".

"Yes". Okay, so what now?

"Any idea, Eriadne?"

"He was supposed to appear, but it seems something went wrong". I think for a bit before coming to a conclusion. Always use all the data, right? If something happened one way when we did one thing, it could happen again the same way if we did the same thing, right? Re-pro-du-ca-bi-li-ty. That's what they called it.

"Eriadne?"

"Yes?"

"Trust me".

"Lady Maria, I do".

I take a deep breath Try to anyway, the rising feeling of panic at nothing happening quickly smothered. I can't fail, not this close to her. You just spoke, so you can still try. And thus… I speak:

Sight unseen, Will unbound, be light and word, be Blade and Shield. By thy name I call thee Akazu-- a feeling like flying, a sensation like being falling up, the not-air tearing at our clothes as we go faster and faster towards some unseen goal.

[] Stay silent, just focus
I grasp Eriadne a little bit tighter - not much, I don't want to hurt her and who knows how strong or weak we are in this state - and focus. Yes, I can see it. Beyond the truth of the world, above the lie of magic, through the transient vaguery of this twilight state I can feel the call of a distant echo.

>>BEHOLD THE GLORY OF ENDING! BEHOLD THE TERROR OF BEGINNING! WITNESS GLORY EVERLASTING AND JOY SWEETER THAN DEATH!<<

The call spurs us forward, faster and faster, endlessly speeding up till I no longer remember anything but the sensation of merciless flight and the closeness of Eriadne's body.

Finally, after what could have been but seconds or mere minutes we stand before a giant black building, a midnight palace that seems hewn directly from forgotten dreams and unthought hopes.

It feels tempting to keep holding onto my friend, but I resist and disentangle myself from myself, catching her by the shoulders as she sways.

"Eriadne?"

"…yes, Lady Maria?"

"Let's go inside".

"Are you certain?"

"There's nothing else here". And indeed, the building seems to float freely within a starlit expanse. As do we. If things were any different I'd probably feel completely nauseaos right now, but as it is my stomach probably couldn't feel any more messed up. Eriadne seems to feel differently though, for a brief look downwards forces me to catch her again as she sways. Okay, in that case it's probably best to distract her.

"Let's go".

"…yes".

I'm not that late, this vote is still completely relevant

You know thinking about it, about know is when HoTS would be useful
>>
>>34904723
It's already active that's why Eri does everything we say without protest or complaint and feels.
kinda trance-y. She's more active normally.
>>
>>34904915
>She's more active normally.
I assume she's a little freaked out by the whole freaky situation, but yeah I bet HoTS is active right now and it's why Maria isn't completely freaking out
>>
Shit I know why Eri burned a page. To get rid of any mention of Sanya. She and Sora didn't talk so she's not there but Sanya is a real danger. Eri doesn't want anyone to know of the problem before she deals with it.
>>
>>34905080
Or it could be the entry just didn't reflect her opinions on her first day anymore.
>>
>>34905091
Or perhaps she was so embarrassed she freaked out a little bit

Might also just be a custom or a magic thing involving the journal, her pendagger is magic after all
>>
>>34905111
Or maybe it's some weird dragon noble magic ritual thing to do that. Who knows?
>>
>>34905111
Or perhaps she just doesn't want to leave a book of her innermost thoughts and obvious weaknesses lying around. Write it down to get your thoughts straight and get it out of your head, then burn it before your political rivals can steal it.
>>
>>34905181
It's kind of weird for her to write, "if anyone finds this book after I die, destroy it" if she never intended to save a single entry, though.
>>
Oh, an update!

[the camera zooms down white-tiled corridor at whose end a dark door opens into a sort of open sky thermal bath. We see The Narrator sitting submerged to the shoulders, as the camera draws nearer she half-turns]

[Narrator]

Eeek! Oh, haha, it's just you. Right, Producer said they were impressed with your "dee-duct-eef" reasoning. They think they'll give you something nice cause that really were some good observations!

[she plays with a wet lock of hair, then crunches her eyebrows together]

[Narrator]
Oh right! Votes are now closed. Thank you and please wait warmly!

I have marked Narrator-chan as mai Waifu long before she was even an idea, obviously.
