You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Your heart freezes when you see Raikov, in a fresh set of tank strikers, rolling up the stairs with a predatory grin on her face.

"Oh shit!" Red blinks.

The both of you immediately fire off your assault rifles. The bullets bounce uselessly off her shields and she keeps approaching.

"Rex, what's the status on the evac?!" You yell.

"The Princess is hooked up and already gone. I'm strapping Jess to Tarin right now. Just give me a few more seconds."

"I can handle her, Cap." Red says, her hand already on the hilt of her sword.

"Yo, Boss, you need any fire support?" Ugly asks. "I can see a tank witch and a whole load of bad guys coming up those stairs for you!"

Damn. On the one hand, you weren't certain if Red could handle Raikov, much the less the troops behind her, alone. On the other, once Ugly fired, the enemy would immediately know he was there.

"Ugly, bring the motherfucking rain down!" You say.

"Got it!" Ugly says happily. Scant seconds later, heavy autocannon shells start raining down on the stairs leading up to the shrine. This time, Raikov's momentum is interrupted as she veers off the path to avoid the punishing onslaught, though you see her shield flash as she takes a few stray rounds.

The troops behind her, though, aren't nearly as lucky. Judging from the screaming and the coppery smell in the air, Ugly no doubt scored some very punishing hits.

However, no sooner does the Comanche's cannon stop firing when a swarm of tracers lances up into the sky in a apparent attempt to hit it. The Comanche quickly pulls away as Ugly moves to avoid the fire.

"All right, Jess is loaded up and outbound." Rex announces.

"Okay, Bullseye, do you think you can come over the shrine and pull us out?"

"I'd love to, but this LZ is start to get real hot!" Bullseye says nervously. "Jetstream, Euclid, and Ghost already have their hands full trying to fend off the enemy witches up here!"

No sooner does he say that when you hear a loud clashing of metal. At some point in the dogfight above, Jetstream had drawn steel against one of her opponents, who had done likewise, and they were literally swordfighting in the sky.

"Do we have any other options?" You ask Rex and Red.

"Well, we can try going down the other side of the hill." Rex says. "It's shallow enough that we should be able to negotiate it."

"Or we can just fight our way through the front door! After Ugly's pass, there's no way they're organized enough to counterattack!" Red says.

>Bring the Ghost Hawk in to try and extract.

"Let's get out of here!" You yell, pointing to the other end of the shrine. "We'll throw them off by going down the other end of the hill!"

"Oh shit she's coming back!" Red warns as you hear the whine of tank strikers.

"Just run!" You yell, pushing Rex and Red forward. You risk a look back and see Raikov just cresting the stairs when she's cut off by another burst of cannon fire from the Comanche. However, Ugly has to keep his craft moving to prevent from being hit by AA fire, so he can only keep her pinned for a few brief seconds.

"You're clear!" Bullseye says, now assuming the role of spotter. "Go go go!"

When you reach the edge of the hill, you notice that it was... a bit steeper than Rex's description made it out to be. However, it seemed to be a straight shot to the foot of the hill.

You briefly debate how you should handle going down the hill.

The whistle of a 50mm shell passing just over your heads quickly answers that debate.

"Go!" You yell, leaping over the edge and sliding down the hillside. Red and Rex follow suit, but it wasn't an easy nor smooth transition. After all, dirt and rock were not exactly conducive to sliding over. Eventually, the slide turns into a roll and the three of you drop into a heap at the foot of the hill. Red, naturally, is the first to scramble to her feet and pull both you and Rex up.

"Come on! Come on!" She grunts as a 50mm shell lands a handful of meters away.

Raikov may be crazy, but she wasn't THAT crazy. It didn't take a genius to realize that taking a tank striker down that sort of terrain would lead to bad things, so instead she opted to stand on top and rain artillery down on you.

Odd, though. The way she was shooting, it was as if she just wanted to scare rather than kill you.

You quickly shake the thought out of your head and clamber back up to your feet. The three of you dash farther into the forest, where even Raikov's enhanced senses couldn't home in on you.

"Looks like we lost them for now." Rex sighs. "Where do we go from here?"

With your witches tied up and air defenses now actively sniffing for the Comanche, your support options were limited. You also had no clear idea when the Japanese relief forces would be arriving. Could be the next 30 minutes, could be several hours.

"We'll head for the coast. That will be where the Japanese will be landing first." You say. "There will also be space for Bullseye to land, too."

"All right." Rex nods.

"Raikov is not going to just leave us alone." Red grimaced. "You realized it too, didn't you? She was missing her cannon shots on purpose."

"You don't know that, Red." You say, though honestly you were trying to convince yourself more than her.

"You know, now that I think about it." Rex muses. "If we're going to wait for the IJN to extract us, maybe we should do something about that missile battery we passed."

You pause to think about it. It would be better use of your time than staying put, but then there were the chances of running into enemy patrols.

"Jetstream, Ugly, how are you two doing?" You ask.

"Me and the other witches have our hands full!" Jetstream says. You can almost swear that she's ENJOYING the fight the right now. You can hear the clashing of metal in the background, meaning she was still in the middle of her sword battle. "I'm doing battle with an actual Chinese Wing Leader!"

"I-I-It's taking me and Euclid everything we have to keep the other witches away." Ghost says. "Ugly's doing what he can, suppressing their AA assets."

"Bullseye, you think you can come in and extract us?" He asks.

"That's risky, man." Bullseye says. "After Ugly's lightshow, they've probably got eyes all over the island, now. Not to mention you got that crazy Russian tank witch after you."

No, you couldn't afford to pull anybody in to help you, as they were all busy keeping the enemy's attention focused on them and away from you. Plus, lowering their numbers would likely prove to be hazardous to them, as well.

"Let's go." You say. The three of you start jogging along the beach, heading south towards where you saw the missile battery. Fortunately, you don't run into any passing patrols or guards. They were no doubt drawn away by the fighting your witches were causing. Soon enough, the hill the battery was situated on comes into view.

"We're almost there." You pant.

"Uh, guys, I got some bad news." Bullseye interjects. "You got a heat signature coming up behind you, and FAST."

The three of you turn around, and even in the grainy quality of your nightvision goggles, you could see Raikov barreling through the sand towards you.

"Red, I can't order you to do this..."

"Don't worry, Cap, you don't even have to ask." Red nod as she turns around and draws her sword. "I'll buy you some time."

"Remember, you're not here to beat her."

"I know."

"If you're in trouble at any point, then just get out of here."

"I know, Cap."

"Just making sure you know." You sigh.

"I'll be fine. I can handle this bitch." Red grins.

"Bullseye." You talk to your pilot over a private channel. "Keep an eye on Red for me. If it looks like she's in trouble, do anything you can, okay?"

"Sure thing, Boss." Bullseye agrees.

"Let's go, Rex." You say. You try not to look back as you run, but you can't fight the urge and do so anyways. You see Red, her back turned to you, sword drawn, and ready to fight the oncoming tank witch. Oddly enough, Raikov doesn't fire as she approaches, and you wonder why you're not surprised at that fact.

You refocus and turn back around, dashing for the hill. Soon enough, you can hear the familiar sound of metal clashing on metal. You try to ignore and press on, until finally you're at the top of the hill. You see three missile launchers, all linked to a central mobile fire control trailer and radar.

There couldn't be more than four guards patrolling the perimeter, making the launchers lightly defended, but you'd have to sabotage all three if you wanted to neutralize the battery. The control trailer was more heavily guarded, with five guards milling about it, not including the technicians inside crewing it. It'd be tougher to crack, but destroying the trailer would effectively make the launchers useless.

"Let's hit the trailer." You whisper and you and Rex quickly but quietly shuffle your way as close as you can without risking being spotted.

"The way I see it." Rex grunted. "We can be sneaky and cut the cables going out from the trailer. That will put it out of commission for a while."

"And if we didn't feel like being sneaky?" You ask.

"Well," Rex pulls a satchel charge out of his pack, "we could just toss this under the trailer. It's gonna make a bit of a commotion, though."

"Do you always carry a satchel charge with you?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Never know when you need one." Rex shrugs.

You know what, you were just not in the mood for stealth right now. Red was fighting for your life and the two you were just mucking about in this forest rather than helping her.

"Rex, would you do the honors?"

"Gladly." Rex pulls the arming cord and tosses the satchel with all of his might. The explosive charge flies through the air, landing right behind the trailer with a loud THUNK. "I suggest we get clear now."

The both you dash back down the hill, but not before you see a guard round the corner to investigate the noise. Poor bastard.

The explosion rocks the entire the hill, and there's shouting and screaming. It doesn't take much imagination to picture the men inside the trailer burning alive if they had the misfortune of surviving the initial blast. Either way, the battery was knocked out.

"We need to go back and help Red!" You say, running down the hill.

"How?" Rex asks.

"I don't know, but we have to figure out something!" You say.

As you reach the foot of the hill and to the treeline, you can see what's happening on the beach. There, you can see both witches grappling each other, their weapons knocked aside on the sand. From the looks of it, their weapons had been knocked aside early on in the fight, as most of their wounds seemed more consistent with an all out brawl rather than a sword fight. Both Raikov and Red's faces were covered in cuts and bruises from repeated blows. While Red seemed to be doing better thanks to her healing power, Raikov on the other seemed to be more resilient overall and was taking the hits in stride.

It was a pretty brutal thing to watch, really. Every time Red takes a hit, you wince as if you've felt it yourself. Raikov plants a solid blow into Red's gut, causing her to vomit blood all over Raikov's chestplate. Red responds with a headbutt, causing a resounding CRACK that you can hear even from here.

"Should we help?" Rex asks.

Onwards men of valor for your witch is in trouble!

The Witch Flies Alone

A Witch with her head up high,
Flying with her brothers as they soar in the sky,
Steel Wings they carry them through,
How they work she never knew.

Nevertheless she didn’t care,
As long as they stuck together as a pair,
Though sometimes she flies right passed,
Always laughing at them since she’s very fast.

When time for fun and games were done,
She takes to the skies with her gun,
With her upfront as an angel from up above,
As they in turn protect her with brotherly love.

They made their gains they made their shots,
Their flight in motion as if it were a waltz,
Then something from down below,
Caused her brothers to burn with a glow.

One by one they all fall down,
As their steel wings go without a sound,
She looks in horror then screams and shouts,
“To run away you stupid louts!”

At first she thought they were slow,
Then she saw that is was not so,
They fly together to form a shield,
So she can fight while concealed.

So she shot and fought down to the last shell.
She cried and shouted like she was in hell.
Once the smoke finally cleared,
Only to find her brothers weren’t near.

She flew back home like a shoulder should,
But in her mind had felt like she misunderstood,
For she did not see the familiar sight of her brothers’ engines as they’ve flown,
Nor the sounds of chatter or laughter not even a groan.

Then it has hit her with a heavy blow,
Was she ever this slow?
The bitter realization that made itself known,
That this witch now flies alone.

Okay, here's how it goes.

>Janice and Pierce are OTP
>Red and Tarin subtly vie for his affections as well, which Janice thinks is cute.
>Line is crossed when Red and Tarin become more sexually aggressive (due to some bad advice from bad witches)
>Janice thinks enough is enough and drugs them both and forces them to watch her and Pierce make mad, passionate love. Turns out, during the same night Pierce starts talking about getting hitched.
>Red and Tarin sad, but decide to step up their game.
>Both pretend to be cowed by Janice for a few weeks.
>Red, who can't stay as cool as Tarin, takes out her sexual frustration on POW Raikov.
>Raikov starts to see this as a twisted love, and she loves it.
>Plan is implemented for Red and Tarin to drug Pierce and do TERRIBLE, LEWD things to him and his body over the course of a few weeks while he's pseudo-asleep.
>Janice gets a series of cryptic notes, leading her eventually to multiple videos of the LEWDS with them all.
>Janice tries to find a kidnapped Pierce across the world, getting videos sporadically of him struggling against Red and Tarin's LEWD mind-games.
>Janice finally catches up to the two in an abandoned hospital in the middle of the night.
>Makes her way to a dark and spooky operating theater, where Pierce is strapped down, and painfully erect, but blindfolded.
>She cautiously make her way towards him.
>Lights flood the operating theater, revealing hundreds of TV sets with the past year's LEWDS playing over and over again.
>She rushes over to Pierce, all caution gone.
>"J-Janice? Is that you?"
>"Oh God Pierce... what... are you okay?"
>"I never stopped... I never stopped. I'm so sorry. They never let me stop... but I never stopped... thinking... of... you..."
>Red and Tarin, close the doors of the operating theater behind them and enter, weapons drawn.
>Red: "...That's right, Janice, God damn it. And if we can't have him..."
>Tarin: "...no one can."

"I don't think there's anything we CAN do." You scowl. "Just keep an eye on the perimeter, make sure nobody else gets any ideas."

"Roger." Rex nods. And keeps an eye on beach.

Red and Raikov continue wailing at each other, until finally, Red manages to push Raikov away and she makes a dash for her dropped sword. However, Raikov is quick, and is already behind Red, snatching her from behind and wrapping an arm around her throat.

"Shit!" You curse and raise your rifle. However, you can't get a clear shot. Now, you were fairly certain Red could heal most regular kinds of wounds, but asphyxiation was not one of them, and you could see Raikov's grip tighten.

And then Red does what is quite possibly the stupidest move you've ever seen. She stops trying to fight Raikov's iron grip, flips her sword around, and stabs Raikov through the chest.

Through her own.

"RED!" You scream, breaking cover and sprinting down the sand as both witches struggle and spasm. Raikov immediately breaks off and stumbles backward, her shirt quickly staining with blood. She sees you approaching and deploys smoke launchers installed in her strikers, obscuring herself as she retreats.

However, you don't care about that as you rush towards Red's collapsed body.

"Red! Red! Are you okay?" You ask, flipping her onto her back and checking her vitals.

"Could've been better." Red coughs up blood. You tear her shirt open to check her wound, wiping away the blood, and are relieved to see that she closed it, if only just barely.

"Freaking idiot..." You shake your head, quickly pulling out bandages and painkillers from your medical kit.

"It worked, didn't it?" Red chuckles and then coughs in pain.

"It's not safe here." Rex says, his head on a swivel as he scans the treeline. "We either need to leave or move."

"Bullseye, I need you to come for extract, NOW." You say.

"All right." Bullseye says, not even debating with you. "Hold on, we're coming on."

As Bullseye makes his approach you key your radio to the squadron frequency.

"Everybody, I need a sitrep. What's going on?" You call out.

"We're being forced back!" Ghost says. "Jetstream took out the wing leader, but I think that just made the Chinese witches angrier!"

"They're bringing in helo support too." Ugly grunts. "Should've packed more sidewinders."

"We're extracting right now!" You say. "Break off and get away from the island!"

"Roger that!" Ugly says.

"Affirmative." Jetstream says, sounding rather exhausted now. "Euclid! Ghost! You go first!"

At that moment, the Ghost Hawk finally lands, blowing ocean spray and sand in the air. Hoskins tosses down a stretcher which you use to strap Red down into, and you and Rex haul her into the Ghost Hawk.

"Okay, go!" You yell, slapping Bullseye on the shoulder.

The Ghost Hawk begins to rise, until the craft gets bracketed by automatic fire.

"Shit!" Bullseye scowls. Down below, a convoy of BTRs blazes in, their pintle mounted MGs blazing in the sky. You can hear bullets impacting on the Ghost Hawk's hull, and alarms and warning bells shriek in the cockpit.

"Ah shit, brace yourselves!" Bullseye yells.

And then suddenly, the entire beach explodes in cloud of fire and sand.

"What the fuck?!?" Bullseye cries.

"There!" Rex points out the door. You turn to see of all things, the Ise blazing in at fulls peed. You never thought such an ugly ship would look so beautiful. Its battleship grade guns begin blazing away, explosions rippling across the beach and tossing the BTRs around like burnt toys.

Suddenly, swarms of Shinden IIs and witches bearing the colors of the Royal Guard swoop in. Dozens of helicopters laden with Japanese Marines following close behind.

"A million apologies for the lateness, Captain." You hear the captain of the Ise speak through the radio. "A Chinese flotilla attempted to intercept us, which we had to deal with."

"Okay, that's well and good." Bullseye says. "But is your flight deck clear? We've taken damage and may need to emergency land."

"I would recommend against that. The Ise must remain moving in case the enemy have missile launchers or submarines in the area."

"Well, uh, we may not have a choice." Bullseye says as a new, shrill alarm sounds. "Because we just lost all engine power."

"The deck is clear. Best of luck to you."

And then Bullseye turns to you and cracks a tired smile before saying something somebody in a helicopter should never hear.

"Hey, wanna see a cool autorotation?"

Crap.

Contrary to what you see in movies, helicopters didn't just fall out of the sky if the engine shut off. There was still momentum in the blades, so the helicopter could effectively "glide" to the ground like a plane. The only problem was, autorotations were hazardous even in ideal conditions. Here, it was dark, windy, and Bullseye was aiming for a moving, and VERY SMALL, target.

"Don't sweat it. I've aced autorotations in the sims all the time."

"But you've never actually done in real life?"

"No, because I've never had a CO dumb enough to get my helo shot up in the first place." Bullseye snarks. "Now shush, I need to concentrate."

"And can you turn off that alarm? It's giving me a headache." Red croaks.

"Nope. The entire point of the master alarm is that you can't turn it off." Bullseye snaps.

All you can do is hold on as the Ghost Hawk plummets down to the water. Bullseye works the controls so that the Ghost Hawk lines up with the Ise's course, going in a long loop to bleed off speed before flaring, killing the last of his momentum before plopping down on the Ise's flight deck, the nose just barely prodding over the edge.

"See? What did I tell you?" Bullseye grins.

"I need a new change of pants." Snips sighs.

However, you don't have time to compliment Bullseye, as you and Rex are already out, dragging Red's stretcher out and passing her off to the ship's medics. A few seconds later, Jetstream, Euclid, and Ghost land as well. Euclid and Ghost seem frazzled, and some of Euclid's hair is singed, but they otherwise seem fine. Jetstream, meanwhile, has half a sword sticking through her gut.

"Just a flesh wound." Jetstream tries to laugh it off as the medics carry her off as well. "I've had worse."

"Still got lots of ammo and fuel. I'll be helping out our Jap friends form a beachhead." Ugly says.

Suddenly, your legs give out from exhaustion and you collapse on the deck, leaning against the damaged Ghost Hawk. Then, a witch wearing the Royal Guard uniform walks up to you. She looked familiar, though you couldn't quite place where you saw her before.

"In case you were wondering, the Princess has made it to safety and is currently being treated in a hospital on shore." The Guard Witch says. "Your witches are also safe, as well. Me and my detail personally escorted them in."

"That's great to hear." You nod. "Um I didn't get your name-"

"Ogawa." The witch grunts and looks away awkwardly, as if not used to giving compliments. "And I suppose I must thank you for your efforts. You did very well... for a foreigner."

Well, at least it was the thought that counts.

You were about to ask her about how the battle on the island was going, but you just too tired, and honestly, you didn't really care all that much. The Princess was safe, and your crew and witches were alive. Whatever happens now, at least you knew something went right today...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget Gundam Build Fighters on Tuesday and Friday and Cyberpunk Idols on Saturday!

The Suffering of Ayumi Ogawa (Part 2)

“Why are you even talking to me, Oggy? Why don't you just go somewhere and give up on more things and people like you usually do?”

The look on Ogawa's face told Jessica Bishop everything she needed to know. The Japanese woman actually staggered in place, her face twisting between a mix of anger and sadness.

Payback, Jessica thought, and well deserved as far as she was concerned.

In the short time since she'd been allowed to live, fly, and fight with Katsumi, Ogawa had been quite possibly the least fun and most obstructive individual she'd ever met in her entire life. Even someone as dull as Frank would have gotten the hint from Jessica shouting "TWO PEOPLE IN THE PROCESS OF REALLY ENJOYING THEMSELVES" at the top of her lungs; somehow Ogawa didn't, and once walked in just as things were getting amazing. Maybe she hadn't used enough honorifics. Katsumi had looked like she was on fire from blushing so hard. At least that had been fun.

Ogawa was nothing like Katsumi. Always dull, overly concerned with things like decorum, Katsumi's title, and especially her reputation; always pushing Katsumi as far away as possible from anything that even remotely resembled danger. Apparently, the lives of steelwing pilots meant less that nothing if it meant that the Princess could be kept out of the fight, safe and sound.

That was something Jessica would never accept.

"Jessica Bishop," Ogawa began, her voice trembling, "perhaps the very concept of what Princess Katsumi is has escaped you, but you cannot simply shirk your duty to her—"

“I'm here because I like Kat," Jessica interrupted proudly, "not because of orders or a reputation that I need to save or honor or any of that crap, do they not teach you about witches being there to support and fight alongside pilots and grunts in whatever schoolyard they lodged the stick up your—"

Jessica was surprised by Katsumi's hand clamping down over her mouth. Looking up at Kat, she felt herself shiver involuntarily. She'd seen that expression on her face before. But never had it been directed at her.

-

Katsumi had all but dragged her to their quarters, her fingers clamped around one of Jessica's arms the whole way. She kept her gaze pointed anywhere but at her very confused friend.

“Kat my arm kinda—”

Katsumi ushered Jessica into the living room, pushing her into their bedroom with a not-so-gentle shove. Jessica stumbled back several steps, still confused by everything that was going on. Her back found itself pressed against their shared dresser as Katsumi stalked after the younger witch, slamming the door shut behind her.

Jessica wanted to crack a joke about how the bed wasn't over in that direction, but when Katsumi looked at her once more, she felt a lump growing in her throat.

“K-Kat?”

“How dare you say that to Commander Ogawa!”

The two witches stared at each other.

Katsumi opened her mouth to continue, but only managed a shuddering breath before starting to pace back and forth in front of their bed. She occasionally stole a glance at Jessica, looked like she wanted to keep talking, but every time she simply clammed up and kept pacing.

“Kat, we coulda gone after White Butterfly! We coulda tried to—“

“No! I do not want to hear any excuses from you!” Katsumi shouted.
>>
>>34880324
“That woman has been my primary bodyguard for three years, she values her life less than any other! She's thrown herself in the way of bullets and missiles meant for me! She's one of the finest warriors I have had the privilege to serve with, and she deserves far more respect than this!”

“She also thinks I'M one of those dangers she needs to protect you from!”

“By the gods, Jessica, I know you and her have not gotten along, I know you come from a very different world than mine, but even you have to know what you said was incredibly insensitive!”

“Insensitive?” Jessica bristled, puffing her chest out as she stood away from the dresser. “Y'know what's pretty insensitive? Not responding to a distress call and listening to pilots die in real time and doing NOTHING ABOUT IT, KATSUMI! I bet those guys think we're just a bunch of swell girls in the next world or wherever it is you think people go when they—”

“We were never in a position to help them and no matter how much you or I or Ayumi would have wanted to save those men there was nothing—” Katsumi almost sobbed; Jessica felt her heart stop. “—NOTHING we could do! You know this, you have to know this, you're much smarter than this, and you dare to accuse my friend of such... callousness?!”

“If that had been your big brother out there? If that had been me? Ibuki, Makoto, anyone you—”

“Don't. Don't use that to excuse yourself of this,” Katsumi said bitterly. “How could you be so spiteful? So petty? I know you are better than this! This is not like the person I have shared so much with at all! How could you embarrass us like this?”

“Embarrass?” Jessica asked, the word almost dying in her throat.

“Yes, embarrass US! With your complete disregard for our commander and your insistence that I should act the same as you have!”
>>
....Jessica Bishop get told by Katsumi herself.

Seems some anons already squee in joys.
>>
>>34880336
“Embarrass... you're... you're taking her side...?” Jessica breathed, leaning back against the dresser. “After all the shit she's given me since I came here, all the times she's said I was a threat to your safety—”

“Jessica this is NOT about taking sides! It is about common courtesy between fellow witches of my guard! It is about common courtesy in general!”

“Gotta side against the embarrassing gaijin. No way. No freaking way, Kat.” Jessica muttered, feeling her eyes stinging.

Katsumi took a step back as that particular word was uttered, her eyes widening with shock.

“How could you say that to me?” She asked, her voice breaking.

Jessica couldn't understand. They'd been so happy before this. This couldn't be her fault. It couldn't.

She had never felt so upset; not since watching the first TV reports on the Battle of Tanana, watching her brother's jet limp off screen trailing smoke and flame, with only one ejection seat caught on camera seconds later.

She hated this feeling.

“I have never, ever, used that word to describe you, not even in jest,” Katsumi whispered. “You know that.”

“You're siding with someone who has,” Jessica stammered. “What do you want me to—”

“And I've forbidden her to say that to you again! Not in my presence, never again in my presence!” Katsumi moved towards Jessica, reaching out to place a hand on her shoulder, flinching when the younger witch shrugged the hand away and moved to the other side of the room. “I made her apologize and you accepted it; you promised you would let that go—”

“YEAH WELL—” Jessica shouted at the wall, not at Katsumi; it was impossible to even look at her right now. “I'm not Japanese, I'm not a royal guard, I'm your friend and I'm a Marine and I wasn't trained to just stand by while people are begging for help!”

“Jessica!” Katsumi grabbed her by the shoulder, forcing her to turn and make eye contact.

>>34880366
“I'd put my life on the line for you, for any pilot, for any witch, even Ogawa, because that's what I was taught to do!” Jessica screamed. “I nearly got killed for a whole airliner full of people! I didn't care that there might not have been a damned thing I could have done to help, I didn't care that I coulda got hurt, or that I didn't know them, I did what I did anyway! Ogawa woulda let 'em all die, and you know what? If it came down to it I'd still save her if she needed it!”

Another moment of silence.

Katsumi tried to step closer.

Jessica backed away.

“Jessica, this isn't... as simple as you want it to be,” Katsumi said quietly.

“Sorry I embarrass you,” Jessica spat, spinning away once more. “Next time, if something like that happens again up in the air, just let me go by myself. I'll never embarrass you again, I'll never put you in danger again, Ogawa will be happy, and the problem is solved. Right?”

Katsumi took another hesitant step closer to the witch, but then sighed shakily as Jessica moved away, looking up towards the ceiling.

“I didn't mean to hurt you,” Katsumi said. “I just...”

Jessica's shoulders were shaking, but she remained silent, remaining a step outside of Katsumi's reach. Eventually the older witch simply gave up, making her way dejectedly over to the walk-in closet. When she returned in her evening kimono, Jessica hadn't moved, still standing where Katsumi had left her.
>>
>>34880414
“Jessica?”

“What?”

“File a patrol report and then get some rest. Think about what you are saying.” Katsumi's tone was soothing, calmly trying to move past what just happened. “I'll be in the living room putting together my own report, and I can deliver yours to Ayumi myself.”

“Okay.”

“I-if you're not done with yours by the time I leave, that's fine. We—you can deliver it in the morning. I'll be back later tonight, okay?”

“Just... go see Ogawa.”

Katsumi paused at the bedroom door, taking one more look at Jessica Bishop before slipping out the door and closing it gently behind her. She did not see Jessica run after her, only a crestfallen expression on her face as the door shut with a soft click.

“Damn it.” Katsumi leaned against the door, lightly knocking the back of her head against it.

“Damn it,” Jessica whimpered from her side of the door, unknowingly mirroring Katsumi.

-

Jessica brooded in silence, sitting on the edge of their bed, clipboard on her thighs with paperwork untouched. When she heard Katsumi leave their quarters, she finally exploded.

“GOD, FUCK *EVERYTHING!*”

The clipboard flew across the bedroom into the door, scattering paper all over the floor. She threw the body length pillow they shared across the room and into the dresser, knocking a picture frame down to the floor. The shattering of glass cut short Jessica's tantrum.

“No no no no—”

She was at the foot of the dresser in less than a second, scrambling to retrieve the now broken picture frame and put it back in its proper place. What glass that remained on the frame fell to the floor and onto the pillow she'd thrown.
>>
>>34880436
Jessica blinked at the picture of her mashed up against Katsumi, taken inside a picture booth they'd run across somewhere in Tokyo. The Princess had been laughing so hard, the tears in her eyes shining in the camera flash. Ogawa was somewhere in the background, looking very cross while sandwiched between Makoto and Ibuki, both of whom had been fighting to stay in the frame.

That had been a fun day.

Turning the picture face down, Jessica staggered off to find something to clean up the glass with.

Twenty minutes later, with some cuts on her hands, she pulled her seabag out of the closet. She was half-way finished stuffing her spare clothes into the bag when the decision finally caught up with her.

The one good thing about being alone was that Katsumi couldn't see her.

-

Leaving Ogawa's room, Katsumi began wandering the palace barracks. She did not feel like going back to see Jessica, at least not right away. She wasn't sure what to say to her now.

'At least Ayumi will be settled for tomorrow.'

She passed many people as she wandered, many names and faces she did not know personally. They all straightened up at attention, saluted and bowed in respect. She would smile, acknowledge the gesture and ask them to please relax. She was just another witch right now, there was no need to get that door. No need to scramble out of her way as she walked. No need to offer to serve the food from the cooks, she could get it herself. No need to explain the honor of being in her presence.

It was unbearable.
>>
>>34880408
Thanks alot, that made my night!
>>
>>34880463
She found herself running to the striker hangar. Father might raise objections to her wearing this particular kimono while among the men and women repairing machines of war, but she didn't care about that right now. There, she could relax and maybe even think about things.

“Yo, Princess.” Seaman First Class Kurokawa waved in greeting, stubbing out his cigarette. “Here for a break?”

“You have no idea how much I need one, Kuro-san.”

“Interestin' outfit ya picked tonight, not that anyone here'll mind.”

“Just give me something to work on, you ass.”

They both laughed. Nobody here shrank from her mere presence. She loved this place for that alone.

“Surprised your other half isn't here; something to do with that little scene after you returned from your patrol?”

Kurokawa tossed a pair of work-gloves at the Princess. She caught them without looking, throwing something within reach right back at him. It turned out to be a spanner, and it nailed him on the head.

“Alright, new subject,” he grunted.

“Please.”

-

It didn't take long for Jessica to finish packing, giving her plenty of time to reflect on the last seven months of her life.

Ever since the airliner incident, she'd gotten closer to Katsumi. It had been an entirely innocent friendship at first. She'd stayed at Jessica's side while she recovered from her injuries during the incident, visiting as often as her duties as a witch and Princess allowed. She had invited Jess to the palace to meet her father, which was around the time it actually hit home that Katsumi was a for-really-reals princess from a foreign land. Her father had been a funny old guy, with airy English and a tendency to say “Ooooohhhh myyyyyyy.” He'd say stuff in Japanese really fast and make Katsumi blush, and somehow that would also make Jess blush. Maybe he knew something that they didn't at the time. Emperors were supposed to be awesome like that.

The Emperor is George Takei?
>>
>>34880493
The visits became more frequent, even as the war in and around Japan intensified. Katsumi's squadron often found itself paired up with Jessica's. They shared something in the sky together; it was hard for Jessica to describe. It went beyond trust. They knew what the other was going to do. Flying with Katsumi made Jessica feel untouchable. Invincible.

She found herself wishing Katsumi never had to leave; Katsumi would admit that she didn't want to leave.

What eventually happened between them had been way better than those stupid comic books she'd found under Rand's bed. And for weeks after that, Katsumi kept coming back for her. At one point, her squadron was stationed at Yokota for a whole month: the Best Month Ever. Better than coffee, almost enough to get her to drop the stuff entirely. Almost.

Sometimes they would share a pot. It didn't have as much sugar as Jessica would have liked, but she found that she didn't really need it any more. When Katsumi got rotated back to the Palace, it felt like the world was collapsing all around Jessica. The visits felt too infrequent, but they learned to make the most of those days and nights.

The invitation to the palace had come on short notice. The night before learning of her new assignment, they'd gone to sleep together joking about how much easier things would be if Katsumi didn't have to sneak out of the palace to be with each other. How it would have been nice to have regular access to each others company.

Jessica could still recall waking up the following morning, disappointed with how the bed was that much colder when she was alone, surprised to see Katsumi standing at her doorway waving a signed transfer document back and forth.

“So about that thing we talked about last night...” she'd said, blushing as Jessica leapt out of the bed, pinned her to the door and... well, they didn't get around to leaving the base exactly on time.

It was really funny to see Rand tearfully bowing before Katsumi that afternoon, thanking her for taking Jessica away. The Major hadn't been as tearful, at least until Jessica promised to visit her friends in the unit.

The imperial palace had been like a dream come true. She could be with Katsumi every day, fly with her, sleep with her, not-sleep with her... none of this could ever get old. There was always a lot of work to do, but that never bothered Jessica. She didn't mind being a bodyguard; she'd shoot down every Russian or Chinese pilot ever to keep Katsumi safe, no questions asked. Makoto and Ibuki were fun people to be around and they would help the Princess teach her Japanese. And Ogawa hadn't been completely intolerable.

But when one of Katsumi's older brothers nearly died to one of the Vampires, things changed. That night, Katsumi'd cried, for the first time Jessica had ever seen. After that, she was more... tense. More aggressive in combat. That suited Jessica fine; she knew she could protect her... except Ogawa wasn't having it. It was like she was frightened every time they went on a patrol, every time an emergency scramble was announced. She became more demanding, more protective. She didn't want the Princess fighting at all if it could be helped. Katsumi did not show the same sort of caution. Neither did Jessica. They wanted to fly and fight, not necessarily for Japan or the US, but for each other. And that tension only got worse.

Katsumi was the best friend that Jessica could have ever asked for. She never wanted to be the one to put a sad expression on her face. That was why she had to leave.

She laid against the seabag and stared at the door to the living room. Any minute now, she thought, Katsumi would walk right through that door, and Jessica could finally apologize for upsetting her, promising it would never happen again.

A voice told her that she could go looking for her, but she was afraid she'd be unable to say what needed to be said in public. She was afraid that Katsumi wouldn't listen. And so Jessica stayed curled up against her seabag, and waited.

-

Today, the hangar did not provide solace for Katsumi. She could barely concentrate on striker maintenance to the point where Kurokawa pulled her aside for a fifteen minute break that ended up lasting for hours. The “old man” would come back occasionally to check up on her, ask if she needed anything, and she would insist that she was fine, she just needed to think about things.

He had long noticed that something was wrong, but never tried to pry information out of her. He had no idea how much she appreciated that.

Eventually, the hangar began to empty itself for the night, most of the lights shutting down, the few that remained dimmed to their lowest levels. Kurokawa returned to the break room, sitting on a chair across Katsumi's.

“Night shift's taking over,” he said, leaning over the table towards her. “Figured I'd check up on you one more time.”

“Thank you, Kuro-san, I was just about to—” She shook her head. “I am sorry I was of no assistance today...”

“You don't have to help us to begin with,” Kurokawa chuckled. “You just insist on doing so, and who are we to deny help from Her Highness? Or at least her attempts at helping.”

“Right...”

“So will you be okay? Do you need anything?”

“Could you give me some advice?” she asked hopefully.

“I could try.”
>>
>>34880566
“I fought with Jessica.” Katsumi began. “It's the first time we've ever fought about anything. We said things. Hurtful things. We didn't mean to.” She covered her face with her hands. “I just wanted her to understand that what she said to Commander Ogawa was inappropriate, embarrassing—”

“But you went too far.”

Katsumi could only nod in agreement.

“Well, apologize to her.” Kurokawa shrugged, as though confused that her Highness couldn't think of such a simple solution.

“I did! But I don't think she accepted... and then I just left without checking up on her again, because I wanted to make sure Ogawa was okay, and... well...”

“Well? Apologize again,” Kurokawa said more forcefully. “You've had the better part of the evening to fret over what's been said. You solve nothing just sitting here talking to me, I'm not one of the people involved in all of this.”

“It's not that—”

“It is that simple.” He pointed at the door with his chin. “Go back to your witch, and say what you need to say to her, without reservation.”

“...You're just telling me this so I leave the hangar.” Katsumi raised an eyebrow at the technician.

“I don't want to be on the receiving end of Commander Ogawa's lectures again,” Kurokawa admitted sheepishly. “She has insisted that you keep at least one escort with you during the later hours, but you seem to have left them all behind. Again.”

“I have, haven't I?” Katsumi slumped against the table.

“It's not as though I'm giving you bad advice.”

“No...”

“It's what I did with my second wife, always face our problems head on!” Kurokawa flexed one of his arms. “Of course that didn't work out in the end, but I suppose it just couldn't be helped.”

“You were married?” Katsumi asked incredulously.
>>
>>34880566
>Kuro-san
I keep picturing a black cat with a minigun for a hand. I wonder why.
>>
>>34880574
>it just couldn't be helped.”

>>
>>34880574
“Of course I was! How else would I know so much about dealing with obstinate women?” Kurokawa grumbled, rubbing the still growing bump on his forehead. “Teenagers. They throw things at you, then come begging for marriage advice...”

“I count at least five things within easy reach,” Katsumi said, smiling as she reached towards a box of napkins on the table.

“And so I'm off,” Kurokawa announced. “Good evening, Princess.”

He hurried out the rec room door, waving as he went.

After a few more minutes of furtive waffling over what she should do next, Katsumi bolted to her feet, slapping the sides of her face for good measure.

“Osu!”

After tripping over her kimono twice before managing to leave the hangar, she resolved to walk back to her Jessica as opposed to sprinting. Her resolve only lasted one corridor before she started running again.

-

Eventually, Jessica decided that lying limp and pathetic against a seabag would not do. She started with push-ups, as many as she could manage without summoning her familiar. She pushed until she felt her arms growing arms of their own, holding up signs that begged for mercy. She pushed until she couldn't even lift her body off the ground. When she could drag herself to her feet, she started on side-straddle hops until she was gasping for air. Falling to the floor back first, she began crunches. She broke her old record of two hundred and twenty, and kept crunching until she swore someone was pouring burning gasoline onto her abs.

She remembered the witch drill instructors standing over her head, remembered smiling right back at them through clenched teeth when they asked if she wanted quit.

It was good to run through the old Daily Seven again, a good sort of hurt. It helped make waiting for Katsumi feel less agonizing.

It also made her forget what she really wanted to say when the Princess finally came back.

>>34880610
Big brother Frank had always told her not to be so quick to make a decision. All her brothers were like that. Mom was like that too, probably the most obnoxious about it as far as she was concerned. She had wanted her daughter to join a different branch, wanted her to listen to everything all the recruiters had to say. Even after Jessica came home from the recruiting station to announce that she'd be off to Parris Island within the week, everyone was telling her that she'd made a mistake, the Marines weren't for her, that she should take more time to think about things before acting on snap decisions.

Except for Daddy, and well, he was a Marine too, so he knew what was up.

Making a decision quickly, and acting on it was what Jessica Bishop did. Sitting around and letting something eat at her wasn't in her mindset. If there was a problem, she fixed it. If someone needed help, she provided it. If someone or something upset her, she ignored it. If she didn't know how to handle something, she avoided it.

If she didn't feel like she belonged in Katsumi's personal guard, then that was that.

But as Jess stared at the bag, she could hear Frank telling her how some day, one of her quick decisions was going to bite her in the ass. His warnings rang louder than ever in her ears as Katsumi pushed her way into the bed room once more, huffing and puffing from having run half way across the palace.

-

“Jess? What's going on?” Katsumi panted, her eyes locked onto Jessica's packed seabag.

“H-hi Kat,” Jessica said, her skin flushed from exercise and embarrassment. “I'm leaving the palace.”

“What was that?” Katsumi asked, still fighting to catch her breath. Her kimono was nowhere near as nice as it had looked when she left the room earlier that evening. It probably couldn't be salvaged. Her father would be unhappy.

Jessica thought she still looked great.
>>
Kind of disappointed the scolding didn't last longer
>>
>>34880636
“I... uh, said I'm leaving the palace.” Jess tried to point to her seabag but her arms refused to cooperate. “Packed and everything.”

For a long moment, the two witches just stared at each other.

“What?”

“I don't want to embarrass you anymore,” Jess continued, strength slowly building in her voice as she managed to prop herself up against the side of the bed. She smiled weakly. “I don't want to hurt your feelings. If I can't deal with the way Commander Ogawa does things, then I shouldn't be here.”

“You aren't leaving,” Katsumi said, surprisingly firm. She took a tentative step closer to Jessica. “I won't allow it.”

“You won't allow it?”

“I am still upset with you, little Octane.” Katsumi was now kneeling in front of Jessica, moving closer still. “But I am sorry I said you embarrassed us.”

“You are, huh?” Jessica sniffled. “H-how sorry?”

“I spent the whole time more worried about you more than anything else in the world.”

“Th-that's pretty sorry...” Jessica mumbled, blinking rapidly as Katsumi's forehead pressed against hers.

“I'm not letting you run away from Ogawa over this. I'm not going let you prove to her that she was right about you being unsuitable as my wingwitch.”

“What are you gonna let me do?” Jessica threw her hands up in the air.

“I'm going to let you apologize to Ogawa tomorrow morning.”

Jessica leered. “If—if I leave I don't have to do that.”

“True, but I don't want you to leave until you do that.” Katsumi was dangerously close to Jessica now. “I don't want you to leave at all.”

“I don't want to leave either, but I thought I had to, a-and—”

Jessica didn't get to finish what she was going to say, and for a long while, neither witch said much of any coherence.

An hour later, Jessica thought she was going to die. How could she feel so sore after feeling awesome? The human body could honestly be some bullshit, sometimes.

“Where'd that come from?” She groaned, trying to find a more comfortable position on the floor.

“I was telling you how sorry I was, that's all.” Katsumi replied, her voice muffled by the blanket she'd pulled down from the bed.

“Be sorry like this more often,” Jessica sighed dreamily.

“I was told to say everything I wanted to say to you, without reservation.” Katsumi pulled her Jessica closer to her side. “So I did.”

“That person gave you great advice. They are the best.” Jessica settled herself atop the Princess, smiling down at her until a sudden thought made her glower. “It wasn't Ogawa, was it?”

“Don't ruin this.” Katsumi poked at Jessica's belly, causing her to wince and collapse against her willing body pillow. “I can't believe you packed your things.”

“Well I'm not going anywhere now!”

“Mmmhmmm.”

“Do I really have to apologize to Ogawa?” Jessica whined, wrapping her arms around Katsumi and giving her a gentle squeeze. The way she shuddered and shifted underneath made Jessica's heart race a little bit faster.

“I told her you would. I made her apologize to you over using that word to describe you. Fair is fair.”

“Damn. Even if I do—”

“Even that,” Katsumi laughed. “But try your best. I won't stop you.”

“'Kay.”

Jessica's best wasn't good enough to convince Katsumi about the whole apology thing, but it certainly made sleeping that much easier.

>>34880687
Ogawa awoke precisely at 0530 hours, as always. Her bath lasted exactly ten minutes, no time to waste enjoying the basic process of cleansing her body. A bucket filled with ice cold water made certain she was wide awake. She dressed in seconds, still grumbling to herself (never aloud, for fear of someone listening in) about the padded black leggings that had become standard issue among many IJN units. They allowed a witch to interface with strikers thanks to a classified enhancement to the materials, but hers felt too tight. They always felt too tight.

Of course, Bishop never wore hers; Princess Katsumi did so only occasionally.

Returning to her bathroom, Ogawa gave herself a once over. Her hair was kept short and straight, just reaching neck length, making maintenance easy, her lips slightly pursed into a seemingly permanent frown. Plain, unnoticeable features, perfect for the few times Katsumi made public ceremonial appearances. She could be her unnoticed shadow, ready to leap to her Princess' aid if the need arose.

She marched with purpose out of her room, making a beeline for the common area. Breakfast was being served, and once again Ogawa was the first in Katsumi's guard to arrive. Ibuki and Makoto sprinted in a moment later, groaning together as they realized they failed to beat their commander to breakfast.

“Hoooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww?” Ibuki wailed.

“A commander leads by example,” Ogawa said. She allowed herself a small smile; Ibuki and Makoto looked utterly defeated. “The Princess?” Her smile was gone; back to business.
>>
>>34880676
...Eh, too early for Jess to be called 'redeemable' yet. Trying to see from her point of view but I'm feeling much of the reflection of what she did and more focused on Kat.

I guess I'm harder on Jess then with Bitchtits and Ogawa.
>>
>>34880714
“She and Bishop were not ready.” Ibuki made a suggestive gesture with her fingers and Makoto made a show of gagging. “Lieutenant Chousokabe will escort her here.”

“I see...” Ogawa glanced at the food being set before them. “Then we shall wait until she arrives.”

“She did insist that we start without her...” Makoto said hopefully.

“It would be improper to eat before the Princess.”

Ibuki and Makoto both sighed. Ogawa hoped that they couldn't see her smiling again.

-

Ogawa suspected that something was definitely up as soon as Bishop entered the common area. Her uniform was unusually... perfect. Even as she tried her best, Ogawa couldn't find anything out of place: service medals pinned on properly, nothing from foreign services on display. She even had the leggings on, though she looked remarkably uncomfortable. Katsumi was right behind her, also in proper uniform.

Both girls clearly needed more sleep.

Jessica looked up at Katsumi, clearly wanting to be somewhere else. Katsumi merely shook her head and gestured over to Ogawa. Stomping her feet in silent protest, the youngest Bishop marched towards Ogawa. She bowed low once, then prostrated herself before the stunned commander, her head touching the floor.

“COMMANDER OGAWA AYUMI,” Bishop shouted in Japanese. “I PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE FOR MY WORDS AND ACTIONS THE DAY BEFORE. THEY WERE SHAMEFUL AND NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF PRINCESS KATSUMI AND OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD! I SUBMIT MYSELF TO YOU FOR ANY FORM OF PUNISHMENT YOU SEE FIT!”

The room had fallen silent as every witch and pilot present took time out of their breakfast to see what was going on.

Ogawa cleared her throat, unsure what to say. “Ah... Lieutenant Bishop, I...”

She looked up at Katsumi, who merely nodded. Jessica still kept her head to the ground, though she was trying to peek up at Ogawa while trying to look like she wasn't. It wasn't working.
>>
>>34880714
No matter how many times I read this, I always picture Ibuki as a pretty diminutive girl with DFC and a nasty habit of drinking on duty.
>>
>>34880720
Consider I am too soft then.

...well, maybe redeemable is too strong a word here. At least Jess for me is not mere flat, annoying hijink character anymore. For now.
>>
>>34880749
“I accept your apology, Jessica Bishop.” Ogawa summoned all of the calm and grace she could. “And I apologize for my own actions.”

“THANK YOU, MA'AM!”

Ogawa grimaced slightly. Bishop had enough volume for a whole squadron of witches.“Then the matter is closed. Shall we join the Princess for breakfast?”

“YES MA'AM!” Jessica leapt onto an open futon. As far as she was concerned, not only had the water passed under the bridge, there was nothing left in its wake.

“You can stop shouting, Jess.” Katsumi sighed, taking her place next to Jessica.

“Hell yeah! Got that outta the way faster than I expected lets eat I'm staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarving!”

“Agreed,” said Ibuki and Makoto.

-

Despite Ogawa's fears that the apology had merely been staged for her benefit, the Bishop girl was uncommonly quiet during their extended patrol over Tokyo. She spoke only when spoken to, or when her magical senses detected something of note. Her radio discipline was uncommonly good. Her spacing in formation was precise. There was none of the playfulness between her and Katsumi that had been on display the prior day.

There hadn't been any emergencies to test that new-found discipline, but Ogawa wasn't about to complain. It was one more day that the Princess wasn't in combat.

She still had worries. If Bishop had somehow been “tamed” by the Princess, it meant that Ogawa could finally start figuring out a way to better integrate her into the squadron. She wouldn't likely leave Katsumi's side, but there were still ways to leverage their unique talents and partnership in a way that would support proper frontliners like herself. They needed a sixth witch as things stood, and Ogawa had already been silently evaluating Lieutenant Chousokabe to be her own wingwitch. She was around the same age as Bishop, but she'd taken to her palace assignment with the sort of fervor expected of a proper Japanese witch.
>>
>>34880785
'That could work,' Ogawa thought. 'Bishop could pass on her own unique skills and perhaps she can learn something of restraint from Chousokabe. I could even request that Katsumi allow them to train together; she would surely agree.'

It felt like she was finally getting a handle on how to deal with this American.

The surprises didn't stop when they returned to the palace. Bishop was the first witch to arrive at Ogawa's office, patrol reports for herself and the Princess in hand. No jokes, no snide remarks about “a whole lot of nothing” being accomplished for five hours straight.

“I shall call you Bishop, Version KAI.” Ogawa mumbled. The American was still standing at attention, waiting to be dismissed. “Thank you, Lieutenant. You are free to go.”

“Aye ma'am! Good evening ma'am!”

There had to be a catch for all this. But she couldn't deny it was pleasant. 'If only she'd shown this sort of enthusiasm when she first arrived.'

-

As soon as Ibuki and Makoto turned in their own reports, Ogawa felt that she could finally relax. Retrieving her bow carrying case and a worn copy of “Sphere” from her bookshelf, she made her way down to the archery range. As always, it was mostly empty, save for a small cadre of girls working on their skills for a palace-wide competition. Thankfully, Ogawa's presence went unnoticed. She wanted to get farther along in the book, and she wanted to be alone while she was shooting this evening.

When the range did empty out entirely, Ayumi excitedly set the book down and approached the firing line. Picking out one of the longer ranged targets standing two hundred fifty meters away, she decided to try something she read about in a Kyudo magazine.

Drawing five arrows from her quiver, she set them all on the bowstring and concentrated. Her fox familiar tail swished back and forth in anticipation, her body emitting a cool blue glow all around her.

Inhale, pull, exhale, loose—
>>
>>34880771
Oh I always knew she liked Kat and her POV confirms it but there is no actual reflection on her part on what she did wrong other then 'embarrassing Kat'

She might be getting better but yes 'redeemable is too strong of a word for me right now.
>>
>>34880804
She sighed with disappointment. Only three managed to reach the target, and the grouping was terrible. The other two found homes in the ground, not even halfway down range.

“Too much magic, Ayumi!” She snapped at herself, reaching for another five arrows.

She was at it for hours, her only rest coming when she'd travel down range to retrieve her arrows and clean up the target.

The Princess had once discovered Ogawa on the range alone like this, confused with how she could consider berating herself for not being perfect on the range, which was supposed to be a form of relaxation. But she was relaxing. Unlike every other moment of a day, she could finally dedicate time to something completely frivolous, something where lives were not on the line.

And there was something about seeing herself improve at Kyudo.

When the sun finally disappeared under the horizon, Ayumi resigned herself to one last attempt at the trick shot. She'd finally managed to get all five arrows to hit the target, was close to getting them all in center mass, but she struggled finessing them downrange. She would “grip” the arrows with too much or too little magic, and that would be enough to send the whole cluster off course.

“This time, Ayumi Ogawa!” she declared, drawing the bowstring back.

“This time what?” Jessica Bishop asked, from directly behind.

Squealing with surprise, Ogawa loosed her final cluster of arrows into the ground two feet in front of her.
>>
>>34880822
She's a teenage girl, what else do you expect? It'd be more unusal for her NOT to be a pain in the ass.
>>
>>34880845
“Oops, you don't usually do that I mean this sport is kinda—” Jessica stopped as soon as Ogawa whirled on her, leaning back and taking another sip from a thermos in her hands. A sweet stench emanated from under the lid. Clearly a special Bishop brew.

“How long have you been there, Bishop!?”

“For a while I guess, Kat's gone to sleep, we kinda had a late night and she didn't wanna share coffee with me so I got bored and started wandering around and then I remembered that Kat wanted me to actually get to know you a little better but I went like everywhere else but here first because I was really hoping you weren't shooting sticks over grass but here you are—”

“Stop, stop.” Ogawa ordered. This was it. This was the catch. “So you were watching me.”

“Yeah.”

“Because you were bored.”

“Yeah that's about it.” Jessica cocked her head to one side. “For what it's worth, you looked like you almost had whatever it was you were trying to do before you messed up at the end.”

“Yes, yes I did almost have it.” Ogawa slumped to the ground. She was done for the night, regardless of how her last attempt went. “I must clean my lane, Lieutenant, you may run along—”

“I can help out, Oggy—Ogawa-san! Besides, I kinda wanted to ask you some stuff.”

“Stuff?”

“I was thinkin' about practicing this stuff with you!” Jessica announced. “Kat says that rather than running away from a problem I should try understanding it!”

“I see...”

“So like if you and me are a problem, then maybe we can figure something out, and you're not *as* bad when we're off duty so what the hell, right?”

Ogawa nodded and smiled, and as the two witches walked the range to retrieve arrows, began plotting ways to be too busy to be on the range.

True, but just because their the center of it doesn't justify some actions. I would have hated Frank if he continued to act like he did before Merlin judging by past reading but he cleaned up his act.

Rex is a mystery but he plays it cool.

Jake is similar and tries to help his witches integrate with his unit and only messed up with the German witch who understandably was being a bitch at the time.

Jess as one anon put it

>Jess is... Prototype with many issues need to be ironed out.

She is the youngest and most emotional and I understand that but I feel this war is more of a game to her at this point, there has been close calls sure but in her mind which almost kind of bothered me a little after thinking about it a bit more.

I'm a witch and as long as I'm with Kat, we're unstoppable invincible and that is the issue, I guess I find it a bit grating.

AGain, I know she's young and witches despite everything don't think they'll die especially compared to the losses of steelwing pilots but it is for one of the few reasons that I find Jess grating.

Sorry, I'm letting my thought dictate what I'm typing so it's very sloppy.

I'm not saying she is not redeemable but she is not at that point yet but she is in the starting line.

Does this make sense ?

Goddamn feelthy this made my evening. The two most unlikable witches being forced to mature a little. Thank you for the fine storytelling sir.
>>
>>34881029
I imagine Jess to be a petite, but somewhat buff witch, due to all of the hard exercise she puts herself through. She also is very flexible thanks to the ballet training she was put through, and she keeps up on some of those exercises.

It translates to a surprisingly fast and graceful witch in the sky. Being around Katsumi has also allowed her to learn more about how to use her own magic, which makes the pair quite scary to run up against.

Certainly makes whatever brought them down a couple threads back some scary shit to think about.
>>
>>34881071
Rex and Jake aren't as pampered compared to their siblings

Rex prefers a simple post with complications mainly occuring when he gets to japan (due to a witch)

Jake? He seems pretty normal but he and his group wound up tossed into the meat grinder and only not starting to catch up to the Russian Super Stuff he's chronically running into and the results of such earlier run ins (as well as Frank causing him problems via the massive german bitch)

Why did people go to germany again?
>>
>>34881091
Not really, I think Jess maybe got Cocky and did some sort of small fatal mistake in which Kat took the blow for her.

Most likely it was against a steelwing pilot

If Jess were to have fought against Frank maybe she'll have a better idea but she didn't

Combination of wanting to be in the thick of it, and probably some Wittmanfags.
>>
>>34881071
She is a teenager which yet to see downfall on her life (before). Her actions are still understandable, though still irritating.

>>34881145
Wait, don't Jess fight frank once in brain?
>>
>>34881143
To be closer to the front. Germany is being directly under threat by the Russains, so this is the frontline fighting and if we beat them here it will basically be an advance all the way to Moscow.

also at the time we didn't know that Frank and German/France tankers would have that handled but the point still stands

>Wait, don't Jess fight frank once in brain?
Didn't happen.
>>
>>34881143
>Why did people go to germany again?
Because thats where the fight is, and Jake is a soldier
>>
>>34881161
>Wittmanfags
WORSE. TASTE. EVER.

>>34881165
Hard to tell if the Barin/Namek expereince occured yet relative to PJW89
>>
>>34881145
It's complicated. At least, I hope I'll be able to make it complicated, intense, and some crazy over the top awesome when we get there.

>>34881190
WittmanGENTLEMEN are an extremely refined breed, I'll have you know
>>
>>34881161
To be perfectly honest, I'm a little of both and it will feel kind of weird going back to the middle east (at least for me)

But it mostly was for the front.

>>34881165
She didn't if I recall.

and yes that was what I was trying to express, her actions are understandable but considering the position she is in and her mindset is a bit irritating.

Hell even Merlin is more mature then her.

But it is also stems from the main reason that line that always brings a bit of irritation but they are right.

'I'm a witch'

Feelthy, Wittmann is the biggest cunt in a long string of cunts.

Not even you can fix that shit.
>>
Just our luck to end up under her, which will make getting anything done difficult assuming she doesn't try to get Jake and Company killed.
>>
>>34881219
>Hell even Merlin is more mature then her.
Because maybe, just maybe, Merlin has already taste failure and rejection before and more importantly, don't really regarded herself as witch until Frank comes.

Challenge has been given. Will the champion accept the challenge?

No.

Don't you dare.

Of coarse I hope you do but here is the thing that i have gathered.

Witches don't think much of Steelwing pilots that is almost a stated fact.

If it weren't for their missiles maybe not even a threat for witches fighting against steelwing pilots.

Jess is the only daughter/witch of the Bishop family in which their grandmother thought the same thing.

Even now Matrons are just starting the realize that steelwing tech are catching up against witches to fight against even or maybe better then them.

If matrons and a few keen individuals just figured this out, the standard solder/marine aka Jess wouldn't think otherwise.

To her Frank is the exception because she's his older brother so of coarse he's awesome and 'still' accoding to Jess Quest thinks that steelwings are not as good as flying in strikers.

It's less complicated and more of youth and an ingrained line of thinking that has been around since man has attempted to fly without strikers/brooms
>>
>>34881267
A part of me wants this but another part of me wants her to end with Jake.

I know you said you don't think that way but that is my inner shipper talking right not and not my head
>>
>>34881301
I'd rather she end with a bullet through the skull, frankly.
>>
>>34881253
It was just an example but she didn't consider herself to be a witch and thus doesn't have that old line of thought as many other witches do.

This is why I like merlin
>>
>>34881253
She didn't seem to be pampered or such and never got the whole special witch treatment, and likely put her engeries elsewhere.
