You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

While you and the others prepare to fetch the cake that you ordered for Marianne, the Princess herself is stuck back at the castle...

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

Though the main issue at hand has long since been resolved, the meeting with King Celestino's messenger drags on for much, much longer. Once we hit the second hour of this, I find myself discouraged from continuing to check my pocketwatch to see how much time has gone by.

All I can think of is how much I would rather be in town with Luciana and the others.

"...rianne."

I wonder how the Wilhelms' baby is doing...

"Marianne," Father taps me on the shoulder.
"Eh!?" I jump up in my seat. "What's the matter, Father?"
"Meeting's over," he says, smiling at me.
"...oh," I nod. "Well, er-" I turn to the messenger. "Thanks for your time."
"I think I'm the one who should really be saying that," the messenger replies with an embarrassed smile.

Yes, you really are.

With our goodbyes out of the way, Father and I leave the room first, passing by Sir Anatole as we head out into the hallway... has he been waiting out here this entire time?

"Sir Anatole?" I call out, turning to him.
"Huhwha!?" Flinching, Sir Anatole jumps backwards and ends up slamming the back of his head into the wall. I guess he fell asleep standing up.

While I definitely can't blame him, that's still a really bad habit to have.

"Oh-" he rubs where he hit his head. "Princess Marianne! Your Majesty! I see that your meeting's finally done with?"
"Yes, it is," I nod.
"And it looks like you were able to get some naptime in while you wait!" Father laughs as he playfully jabs Sir Anatole in the upper arm.
"Eheh... I was just zoning out for a bit, that's all," Sir Anatole replies, forcing a smile to try and mask just how much Father's punch hurts.

I really wish that he'd stop doing that kind of thing.

"So what's the news?" Sir Anatole asks. "Nothing huge, I hope."
"Er..." I place a hand to my forehead and try to muster up the courage to say what I need to say. "...it may seem so to you..."
"Hm? How so, Princess?"
"Well," I sigh, "King Celestino requested some assistance with the situation over in Marconetti, and I happened to volunteer you to be sent over there."

The look of surprise on Sir Anatole's face hits me like a punch to the stomach.

"Wow, Marianne," Father turns to me. "I was gonna tell him myself, you didn't have to do it."
"No, this is my responsibility as the one who suggested it in the first place," I reply.
"Uh... you're serious?" Sir Anatole asks.

"Yes," I nod.

"I know it sucks," Father says, "but this's important, and-"
"No, I know how is," he shakes his head. "Random assignments are part of my knightly duties. I'm just surprised, is all... usually I get to stick around long enough to piss someone off before I get shipped off to God-knows-where."

I feel so guilty right now.

"...but hey!" Sir Anatole shrugs. "maybe I'll catch the eye of some Marconetti noblewoman while I'm up there and finally get myself a wife!"
"You'd better invite us to the wedding if that happens!" Father laughs.
"Ugh, Father..." I sigh.

After some more joking around, the messenger finishes up gathering up the documents he brought with him and exits the room into the hallway where we're talking. Since he'll apparently be leaving the country along with the messenger, Sir Anatole reintroduces himself to him and escorts him to Arnaud so that they can get some documents processed beforehand.

"Well that definitely ate up most of the day," Father says once the two men are out of earshot. "Sorry about that, Marianne."
"No," I shake my head. "This is part of my responsibilities as Princess..."
"Still though, I'm sure that you're hungry after all that waiting. What say we head down to the dining hall and get something to eat?"
"Eh?" I stare at him. "You mean, you'll actually be eating -with- me?"

"Haha, I knew you'd come around!" Father laughs. "Now let us go and fill our stomachs with turkey legs!"
"...of course it would be turkey legs," I sigh.
"What, you wanted something different?" he asks. "Because turkey legs was just a delicious suggestion, I'll be fine with whatever you wanted to eat instead."
"No, that's okay," I reply. "I know how much you love gorging yourself on those things..."

While I also think that they're tasty enough, I'm not particularly fond of eating the same thing all the time. Seriously, Father is as bad as Reinhold is when it comes to turkey legs...

With that decided on, Father and I make our way towards the nearest stairwell. The frequency at which I've been able to actually eat dinner with my father has really been low as of late, so I'd much rather not waste any time in getting there if all possible.

"Huh, that sounds like Elena," Father says, turning to me.
"It does," I reply.
"Wanna go see what she's up to?" he asks.
"Might as well," I shrug.

I'm also interested in finding out who she's talking to. Maybe it's Rana? She -is- a dragon, and I assume that she would still be very fast even in her human form.

"Well I'd like to think that I could beat Emilio in a footrace," Sir Gregory laughs.

UGH.

"I -do- keep pretty fit, you know."
"Hmm..." Elena mumbles. "...are you faster than Uncle Thierri?"

"On the one occasion that he challenged me while I had a sprained ankle," Sir Gregory replies.
"Meh, excuses," Father scoffs. "A win's a win."
"As if you'd have any chance at beating me if you we were to try that today," he crosses his arms.

"They're just acting dumb as usual," I shake my head. "It's nothing worth wasting your time with."

I want to stop this foolishness before it can spread, but I know that I'm most likely too late.

"Uncle Gregory and Uncle Thierri are talkin' about who'd win in a footrace!" Elena says excitedly.
"Oh?" Sir Vincent laughs.
"Daddy would beat both of them," Racquel boasts. "He's a lot faster than he looks. Once, Mommy was standing on a chair so she could get a book off of a high shelf and she lost her balance but Daddy was able to run from waaaay across the room and catch her without any problem!"
"...is that so?" Sir Gregory says with a smirk.

"Umm, please don't involve me in this..." Reya says, nervously laughing on the sidelines.
"C'mon, it's only for one day!" she pouts. "It's not fair that Sylvie gets to play with Rana while I don't get anything!"

Ah.

Yeah, I have a short epilogue thing already worked out in my mind for maybe half of the girls at this point.

So that's where Sylvie is right now?

"Don't be a brat, Racquel," Sir Vincent says to his daughter.
"Uu..." Racquel mumbles. "Okay, then I just want a hug from him if we win. That's fair, right?"
"Er, as long as you don't try anything weird," Reya replies with an extremely uneasy expression. "I don't feel like getting murdered by your father today."
"Huh?" Sir Vincent turns to him. "Why would I do that?"

I'm staying out of this...

"That's fine I guess," Elebna shrugs, "but you don't have anything that I'd want in return. And Uncle Guillaume told me that you only bet when you have something to gain."
"C'mooooooon~" Racquel groans.
"Sorry, Racquel!" Sir Gregory laughs. "But Elena does have a point, you know."
"Ugh..." she sighs. "Fine, I'll get my hug some other way."

Though she seems to have admitted defeat in her quest to sexually harass Reya, it doesn't look like Racquel's ready to give up the race itself. All fired up, she holds on tight as both of the Knights take position by the eastern wall.

"Wanna officiate at the VERY least?" Father asks.
"What do you think?" I reply.
"Fine," he sighs. "Gregory, Vincent, and your adorable riders!" he calls out. "Are you ready!?"
"Whenever you are," Sir Gregory replies.
"Always," Sir Vincent nods.
"Okay then! You start at the count of three, and the first one to make it to the far end of the hallway wins!"

I can't believe that this is actually happening.

"One..." Father holds up a finger. "Two... THREE!"

With that, both of them start down the hall as fast as they can.

I know it's a shorter thread than usual, but I have class in the afternoon so I'm going to have to end the thread here.

Though I'd hoped to get back to the Reinhold in this thread, it was still fun getting to goof around with Thierri and the others. And yes, this is the kind of thing that Marianne dealt with very frequently before the quest began.

The next thread will be on Monday night, with another Princess Guard.

And now I take questions.
>>
>>34881237

Will we get a third Marianne interlude or is the issue of the race gonna be a surprise for the Reincrew when they come back?
>>
>>34881132
That sounds pretty sweet, keep on trucking Arch, we believe in you.

>heated race.
>Both sides incredibly close.

>Greg is trailing behind after Vincent pulls a fast one.
>Elena starts using script.

>Will we get a third Marianne interlude or is the issue of the race gonna be a surprise for the Reincrew when they come back?
The next thread will be a return to Reinhold's POV.

>>34881291
>What's your favourite VN?
I honestly don't know.

>>34881293
>how did Emilio get so fast anyway?
He just grew that way.

>>34881306
>Whos gonna win the race?
To be determined.

>>34881320
>How deep in DESPAIR is Sylvie now?
While all this goofiness is going on, Sylvie's busy working out back at home. Rana's over there as her "training partner" but is mostly just ogling Sylvie as she does her thing.

And now I sleep. Thanks for playing!

Thanks for the thread Arch.

On a related note, I'm still working my way through the archives(up to thread 115) and dear god...how you managed to deal with that many idiots being that mad is beyond me, and I have a whole nother level of respect for you from having kept going after all that.
