Sleep comes easily. Waking is the hard part.

This isn't the bone deep weariness of Mom's training regimen, or the sticky feeling of being awake for too long dragging you down. This is something new. Your magical exertion left you with a painful, grinding headache- and a tiredness that stretched far beyond your body.
___________________________________________

The trip home was a staggering, bumbling affair. You felt disconnected: Your limbs sluggish and unresponsive, like you were trapped underwater, your bubble of consciousness barely keeping shape. You barely manage to drag yourself up the tree- three steps into the nest you just lie down, out cold before your body has even settled.

Your dream plays out in slow motion- A surreal account of the night's little war. You can dimly perceive the shouts of the arachne, the sights and smells of battle. But, magic...

Magic is clear as day.

In your visions, Sara blazes, the glow of her power leaving her near invisible in the glare. You can see other arachne, dotted across the field- The red swirl of fire magic, pale ripples of water. There's even one with a pale, delicate glow, accompanied by a deep, reassuring warmth.

The skeletons are specks of power in your eyes, spells fading beneath weapons, magic, strength. The giant's armour glows, limned in swirling runes, and the creatures themselves are centred in a powerful spiral of magic.

Mom's weapon swings, and the gem sparks- and you can see the air around her light up, the air shifting, making blades of wind. The mage stands behind his guards, a rotten, murky power swelling in his hands. You twist the magic, and the spell breaks- Mana burning free in a torrent of power, threatening to blind you with its luminescence.

Your eyes flick open, one by one- You're still sprawled near the edge of the nest. Someone threw a blanket over you at some point- but the sun is high in the air, and you can feel its heat on you face. Pushing yourself up as best you can, you manage to get your legs beneath you, half rising into a wide stretch.

You back and neck cracks in a sublime way, and you yawn loudly. Your armour is in a small pile next to the tree's trunk- Mom must have stripped it off of you in the night.

You can hear delighted voices somewhere above you, laughter ringing down through the branches...

You scoop up your gear, looking around for something to carry it with. You settle for wrapping it in a blanket and hauling it over your shoulder as you crawl up the bark towards the voices.

The laughter grows louder as you close in, and you reach the training arena, pulling yourself over the lip and into the sunlight.

Your brothers are nowhere to be seen- likely off hunting already. Elle has her sunhat tilted back on her head, knitting something or other as she giggles. Mom is laughing full out as Aria poses front and centre- flexing this way and that as she turns, a wild grin across her face. It takes you a minute to realize: She's bigger, legs and carapace thicker, though she has kept her original colouration. She looks like a younger mom.

Sara dashes towards you as you step into the arena proper, both of her hands clasping and tugging at your arm.
"Lyra, Lyra! Look, yes!"

She half-steps away and spins in place, hair flying everywhere as she shows off.
She's the same size as always- even smaller than the boys, now- but her shell has lightened a few shades, moving from glossy black to a nearly black blue. White spots speckle her chitin near the higher joints, and her carapace sports a crosslike star pattern, bright white at the centre fading as it radiates out.

She grabs your hand the seconds she's completed her turn, eyes sparkling with excitement.
"There was a voice! And it spoke of changing, and blessings, yes!"
"Do you remember what it said?"
"Nope!"

You laugh, and Sara pouts.
"I- I was just excited! I'm going to write down everything!"
She tears off, heading to her bundle of stuff, prying free a few loose sheets of paper and planting herself down.

You head across the platform, aiming to seat yourself next to mom- But you pat Aria on the shoulder as you slide by.
"Congratulations. You did good last night, yes."
For her part, Aria's wearing a heavy blush of excitement, grinning madly all the while.
"Yes! We crushed the undead, drove them away from our forest! And now- Now, I am stronger!"
Her eyes size you up, and her smile gets even more feral, fangs peeking above her lips.
"I'll be even stronger than you, yes!"

You answer her smile with one of your own, lips curling to reveal your teeth.
"We will see, yes."
You both slap each other on the shoulders, and you nod at Elle as you pass her by. Turning in place, you reverse next to Mom, seating yourself. She glances over at you, then back to your new-grown sisters.
"I am not sure if this has anything to do with you, little one, but I am thinking you are a bad influence, yes?"

You hold her gaze steady with your own.
"I think it comes from further up the family tree, yes?"
She laughs in turn, pulling you close with a one-handed hug.

"Ah- can you show me how to take care of my armour? And thank-you for taking it off last night."
Her laughs die down to rough chuckles.
"You barely made it into the nest, yes. Swaying on your feet, snoring before you hit the ground."
"Mmm. The magic really tired me out- I've never done that much, or anything at that scale."

"Your spellbreaking, yes. Sara was irate that you'd gone and fallen asleep, she wanted to record everything."
She leans back with a sigh.
"I am hoping Erics returns sometime soon. Even if he cannot help with all of you growing faster than you should, at least he could help Sara make sense of your magic."
She turns on you, gesturing at the bagged armour.
"Take it out, little one. And grab a strong piece of cloth, yes? This is a lot of work."

Lyra is a real chatty spider, you can do it OP.

We're well on our way to become an absolute monster in close combat and with our ability to break/steal/redirect spells there will be little anyone can do to stop us.

>Have to sleep now.
>good luck gents!
>>
>>34910387
Yay Aria evolved. Pity she couldn't manage a rare variant like us, though. I would have figured she would get one that focuses on fighting, to contrast to our defensive one.
>>
>>34910959
Night fellow spider bro, sleep and don't swallow any of Lyra's siblings.
>>
Anyways, we probably got a long wait ahead of us.
Our mom has to deal with all of our not-a-month-old-yet questions.
>>
>>34910749
It took ~1h to write one update. I expect the next one to take a bit over that.
>>
>>34911442
By that I mean I'll be back in a 'alf-hour.
>>
>>34911504
So long anon, see ya when you get back

Also, anyone got any ideas/conjecture on what our next evolv is gonna be/how long it's gonna take?
>>
>>34911556
Hopefully it takes a long, long while.
Also hopefully it's a progressively heavier armored and better at webbing spider.
though we're pretty set as it is.
>>
>>34911556
Our XP bonus no longer applies, and we're reaching the level of the monsters in this forest.
We can probably still stick around for another month to check out some ruins, but the enemies we fight there are going to be low-level compared to us, causing our growth to slow to a crawl like most other Arachne.
>>
>>34911632
>Our XP bonus no longer applies

It does. Our growth rate is set by our early development. We now gain XP at a boosted rate.

Of course, we still need to find challenges and push our limits if we want to gain anything. But the battle last night must have been good for us. We pushed ourself in a completely new way.
>>
Getting ourselves a home base might happen before the next evolution. A long time before.

I still want to web us up a spider house. Possibly attached to the adventuring guild.
>>
>>34911693
>We now gain XP at a boosted rate.
We do, but it's true that we've rapidly outpaced the level of the monsters around here.
REQM did say that at our current level we could cut through a thousand gnomes and not gain a single level, even with our boosted XP Gain bonus.

We will need to go out journeying to find strong enough monsters to level from them.
>>
>>34911942
Lyra mercenary? It'll be a good way to adventure while getting paid and still gain xp.

Even though, I think she's probably better off just adventuring with Jin. Aria might make a better merc
>>
>>34912023
We should try to drag her adventuring with us. I frrl like if she goes merc it will put a gulf between us.
>>
>>34911942
>We will need to go out journeying to find strong enough monsters to level from them.

I'm not against going adventuring. In fact, I'm looking forward to it. But that need not be the only way to gain XP.

Last nights battle took us to our limits. We pushed ourself 'till we were ready to collapse.

I bet we'll get a lot from that. Not because we fought those skeletons, but because of /how/ we fought them. I bet if we'd just stuck to what we know, and had taken them apart with our glaive, we'd hardly have pushed ourself at all and gained barley anything.

If we focus on our less developed skills, until we make things more challenging that they could be. We could still gain XP and round off our skill set with less powerful monsters.
>>
>>34912023
>>34912080
I don't think Aria would go with us. She'd want to get out of our shadow.

I can see a definite sibling rivalry here.
>>
>all these people wanting to change behavior based on what gives most XP
Let's use some narrative impetus to determine why we leave the nest, and when!
>>
>>34912154
We've been discussing adventuring for awhile this isnt new
>>
>>34912152
Rival adventure groups then? Like race to see who gets the treasure out of a dungeon first?
>>
>>34912213
but we should adventure based on something other than MAX XP.
Like, say, helping out villages who need a hand with horrible monster problems.
>>
>>34912154
We're already making plans to move out towards the village.

But is a village really going to be able to sate our curiosity and avarice for dwarven steam tech and elven yaoi?

But seriously, as an IT admin who played RPG's, we're going to want to check out Dwarven mithril plate and Elven enchantments, not to mention see if we can improve the setting's tech base.
>>
>>34912213
we discussed exploring some places with specific goals in mind to do at those places, not going on murderhobo adventures for xp.
>>
>>34912254
Or, my favorite, helping out THIS village turn out well by taking assignments for it and visiting often.
>>
>>34912261
as someone who plays RPGs, we must first determine what the hell campaign setting we're playing in. I don't even know if we've heard of elves in-character. Though we meta-know from QM talk that elves exist.
>>
>>34912291
But if we do that then we give the local Adventurer's Guild and it's members nothing to do. We'd be taking jobs from the locals.

Besides, what they really need are miners for the element stone mine and a steady supply of Arachne silk.
Do you want to be a miner and just make silk for the town?
>>
>>34912350
>I don't even know if we've heard of elves in-character.
>don't know if elves exist
>an elven adventurer was the one who helped us put on our armor when we left the village
Anon, did you seriously miss her ears, when it was explicitly pointed out?
>>
>>34912359
Anon, going on big exotic adventures to bring loot back home is a time honored tradition.
>>
>>34912350
In case you don't know

It's actually a light novel setting, it's pretty much basic fantasy land with tabletop rules on top
>>
You're halfway through scrubbing a spaulder clean when a thought pops up: You've got a whole lot of things for everyone. The letter, the gifts. Mom prods your arm gently, frozen as it is.
"Lyra? Your armour will not be cleaning itself, yes?"
"Uh- Just a minute, there's some stuff- I got stuff from the village. I'll be right back!"

You hastily excuse yourself, scurrying down the treeside, plucking the overburdened pile of bags from the nest below. Returning, you make a slow circle of the arena, handing out gifts as you go.

Elle is first- and also the one with the most gifts. She squeals in delight as you place each one into her lap: Dyes, beads, needle and thread. You hand the book to her directly, and she manages an excited "Thankyou!" before she starts thumbing through it, twisting it this way or that to get a better look at the pictures.

You tell Aria about the deal with the town- She'll be able to get her own armour whenever she goes. You lesson the sting of waiting for gifts with a bit of candy and dried meat, though you have to stop her from trying to eat both at once. The spices and salting on the meat interest her a bit, but the candy gets her excited- Mom laughs at the expressions flying across her face as she crunches through the sugar coated stick.

Sara is six different kinds of fidgety by the time you reach her. Her eyes glisten as she takes the journal from you, running her hands almost reverently across its cover. She places it down, tilting it just so to get it straight before her, and takes the quills and ink, setting them next to it. She beckons you down, pulling you into a tight hug and whispering her thanks next to your ears.
>>
>>34912491

It's a few moments before you've freed yourself, and you scamper back across, settling in next to your mom again. You open the pack, showing her the other bits and pieces you picked up, describing how excited the trader was to see so much silk. She chuckles, picking through the bag as she goes.
"Mhm... Not many of us care to live so close to the edge, yes. But someone has to keep an eye on the ruins. The town- Oh, potions. Good choice. The town sticks to lumber, but they love trade whenever they can get it. And the arachne on the plains don't produce much in the way of silk."
"There's a letter too- From Jin's Mom. And the smith wanted to have drinks, yes. He says you owe him stories."

"Ha! Old Mikhael is still alive? I would swear he was made of finer steel than he works, yes. He used to be a knight- Half of my first set of armour was his. I couldn't afford something made proper."
"You destroyed his own armour?"
"Gah. He told you that, did he?"
"He said you'd turn up with half of your gear missing every time you passed through. And Lia told us about your first dungeon, yes."

Mom is blushing. She is actually blushing, covering her face with one hand and looking away.
"That was- nnn. Mom wouldn't let me out for weeks. She'd even know there was a dungeon nearby, and that it was empty. She hadn't told me as she'd known I'd dive in anyway, yes."
"Lia said you laughed all the way through."
>>
>>34912515
She closes her eyes, leaning back and reminiscing, hands loosely cupped before her.
"Yes, yes. When the doors shut behind us- I was so excited. A real dungeon! I'd only heard stories in the inn! We ran through, Lia half screaming and me laughing as I smashed skeletons aside. It took us a whole day to find our way out, yes."
"You kept going though, yes? She said you never stopped adventuring."
"Mhm. Anywhere I could get, I went. The ruins, down the river, up the waterfall. I wanted to see everything. Eventually, I even found dungeons that weren't empty yet, yes."
"In the forest?"

She gives you a flat look.
"They are empty now, little one. Don't even think about it."
"Okay, okay. Is that where you got your spear? That magic was... I don't know. Incredible. Mikhael put a stone into a buckler for me, but it just makes water, it doesn't call down wind."
"The spear... No. I found the spear halfway to the other side of the continent, yes. It seems strong, but it needs time to recharge. It is only a rare item, see?"
"Rare?"
"Hnnnn- People divide gear, and magical items, yes? To start, I guess... Items are either Artifacts or not- and from there, they are called according to ho strong they are. From inferior to Phantasmal, yes. The spear is only the 3rd rank, rare. But it is an artifact, yes? So it's stronger than normal."

Sometimes, this whole place feels a little too much like a video game.
"So, artifacts are stronger, but gear is all classified. What would a phantasmal artifact be like, then?"
She laughs, shaking her head.
"I saw a legendary artifact, just once. The leader of an army of paladins, a guild called "The Tempest" had a gold-worked shield. He could plant it into the ground, and call forth glowing shields across his entire army, though they wouldn't last long. Phantasmal artifacts... People would start a war over them, spiderling. In a heartbeat."
"Ah."
>>
Could we please not care about the XP and just proceed as we were? Which was by making Lyra a badass spider nee-san?

Also, I'd say this moment is a great opportunity to tell Spidermom about Lyra's memories of her past life.
>>
>>34912534

You both fall silent for a moment, the gap in conversation filled with the scrape of cloth on armour.
"Uh- When you were adventuring, yes? That's when you met Dad?"
Mom takes on a faraway look, rubbing at her face idly.
"Yes. Ha! Had a showdown in a dungeon- the idiot thought I was a guardian- and then, the actual guardian comes up behind him! We spent nearly an hour fleeing, yes. And when we got away, he was too exhausted to try and run from me, and we got to talking. About ruins, and exploring, and the old civilizations, yes. So when I left the next morning, he went with me. And he stayed. Until he couldn't spend a few weeks waiting for eggs to hatch, and bails out into the woods, the ass!"

She huffs indignantly, grinding her fingers together, and you smile.
"Um, Mom?"
"Yes?"
"You still haven't told us what Dad is, yet?"

She gives you an utterly blank look, with realization slowly breaking across it like the dawn creeping over the horizon.
"I- oh. OH! Hahaha- Oh, Lyra, I'm sorry. The idiots an elf, yes. Long ears and long lives- It's easier to match someone who won't be old and gray by the time you're feeling ready to lay eggs."
"Okay- I just- I just didn't know. I was giving the trader the names of everyone, so anyone could use the credit, yes? But I didn't know what Dad was."
"I'm sorry, whelpling. I'll try and keep in mind that I haven't told you everything just yet, yes?"
"Mhmm!"
>>
>>34912534
man this world has color coded loot scaling.
Fuckin' hell.
>>
>>34912561
She rubs your head, lacing fingers in your hair and smiling at you.
"You're doing very well, yes. I'm proud of you, even if I spend all my time trying to tie you to the tree, yes?"
You lean into her hand, closin your eyes and smiling.
"Thank you, Mom."
"Thank you, dearheart. I could do without the heart attacks, but I could not be more proud, yes.

"Ah"
You pull yourself back up, trying to remember.
"Yes?"
"This- This morning. I had a weird dream- It was last night, but I could, I don't know, see magic? Like there were lights, and swirls, and I could even tell what kind of magic it was?"
"Hmmm. The sight is something. Maybe from Eric's line? It certainly isn't common amongst us, yes."
She sighs again.
"I'll try sending him a note. Or I'll find that stupid messenger spell he wrote, and get Sara to cast it, yes. Finish off your armour, little one. The day is before you, even if you slept most of it away."

Pick your favorite from this list:
A sunhat. Finally.
A labcoat for sara.
A wizard hat for sara.
A tiny net. Sure combat advantage.
A real net. For non-comedic combat advantage.
Bowstrings: for getting shooting things just right.
Ribbons for our legs: I-it's not like I like them or anything

I wonder if this thing goes in a complete circle
Aria is jealous of our strength, we're jealous of Elle's skill, (guessing from this point on) Elle is jealous of sara's magic since she doesn't have to move when she cast, Sara is jealous of the twins because she wants someone to be as close to her as the twins are with each other (read magic guinea pig), and the twins are jealous that Aria is a better fighter.

I've noticed our Spearfighting Rank hasn't gone up in a while, the description says we don't have a lot of experience fighting trained opponents, I bet we could level it up by sparring with Spidermama and Aria

You grab Mom as she starts heading towards her armoury.
"Do we have any more of the wood we used for the glaives?"
"There's a fair bit, yes. You have something in mind already?"
"I gave Elle a crossbow I took from the kobolds-"
Mom sneers.
"Exactly that. Nevermind that it's not very good, She'd probably snap the string just trying to draw it, yes?"

Mom considers it for a minutes, 'Hmmm'-ing to herself.
"I'll bring the knives and the wood, then. I think I have an old crossbow as well- You'll need a few parts for it."
"Thank-you!"
"Mhm. I'll be back shortly."

You pick yourself up, advancing on your little sister and dropping down next to her. She gives you a quick smile, and buries herself back into the fashion book.
"Ah. Elle?"
She looks up, closing the book over a daintily extended finger to keep her place.
"I was planning on fixing up that crossbow- Just making a new one, really. And making learning a bit of sewing? If you don't mind? It was a bit rough even making my undershirt, yes."

She gives you a faint smile, a bit of blush creeping through her pale cheeks.
"I'll help, yes," she says softly.
"Did... did people like my silk? My clothes?"
You nod.
"The trader was so excited about having silk again- talking about how she'd get even more merchants visiting the village. You should come with us next time we go- I'm sure Aria will be going, too."
>>
>>34914878
She smiles again, a bit of pride in her eyes.
"I'll think about it, yes."
You chat idly with her, talking about weaving, sewing, crafting. She opens up the book as she talks animatedly, pointing out different patterns and designs, bringing up different ways to sew. It's near nonsense to you, but Elle seems so happy to chat with someone about it.

Mom returns a few minutes later- supplies in tow. She hands off all the bits to you- and you nod to Elle before you set in on it. You mimic the design for the most part, though you pull Elle into it for a bit, having her hold lengths of wood till you find one comfortable for her. Carving the bend out of the hardwood is tough business, shaving it down, layer by layer, till the spring is difficult for her to pull back, but not impossible.

The bow starts to take shape in your hands, pieces neatly fitting together as you hollow out pieces for the trigger, using the older pieces from Mom's bolt to form a drawing bolt on the side. Elle wordlessly hands you a beautifully twisted length of silk, and you bring it taut between the curls of the wood, snipping off the unused bits.

You raise it to your shoulder and dry fire it- The whole construct sings, wood thrumming in perfection. You can feel it in your bones. You smile, placing the bow down in front of you, snatching the remaining wood up. Arrows are a simple affair- You don't have heads for them, but you rather doubt anything will be able to resist the force of something flung from an Arachne's bow, anyway.
>>
>>34914907
As you replace them in the quiver, Elle hands you a complete length of silk, nodding and guiding your hands through the work. You decide to make an undershirt for Aria- you have a feeling that your sister is just as bad as you are when it comes to this sort of thing. She's nearly as impatient as the boys.

Pieces of silk fall, snipped clean, as the shirt comes together. The second time around is a great deal easier. Somewhere along the way Sara came and set herself next to you, curling in close as she worked on her notes, transcribing all her pages into the new book with a satisfied look on her face.

The sun is low in sky by the time you're done- not set just yet, but getting there. You fold the thick undercoat neatly- You'll give it to her whenever she leaves for the town. Elle smiles at your work, pointing out each piece of embroidery, showing you where you'd done good, where you could use more work. Her voice is quiet- but always steady when she speaks about sewing.

You turn to her as your brothers clamber over the ledge, dinner in tow.
"Thank you, yes. This really isn't the sort of thing I am good at."
She stifles a small giggle, and plants a wide brimmed hat on your head- the same kind she's worn all day.
"Thank you. For spending time with me, yes? I think- I think I will be going to the village, next time."

She cleans up her materials, saving even the scraps and tucking them into a bulging bag. She shifts to one side, making room for the boys as a circle forms up from you and Sara, food dumped into the middle. The evening is quiet, the low murmur of your sibling voices carrying over the forest's noises, dying slowly as the moon rises, fading into snores and slow breathing as the night claims your consciousness.

quick question, have we unlocked any more achievements? I mean I remember in our first form we got about 3 and it let us evolve into our red self but I'm kinda curious to whether or not we've unlocked any more? I don't think we have seeing as we haven't gotten any messages like we did before but I still wanted to ask just to quite the nagging voice in my head.

Ah jeez, we shouldn't overwork the QM like that, posts per thread goes down.

Sara is an Astral Widow Arachne, Aria is a regular Widow Arachne.

>>34915081
Aria wants to be like Mom- and you're closer to that ideal than she is.
You're kinda jealous of Elle's ability to weave and sew, but it's nothing like Aria's driving competitiveness.
The brother's occasionally get jealous of each other for killing something bigger or faster, but the situation rapid reverses.
Sara likes magic, and her siblings. Your ability to swing a spear doesn't really factor into it.

>>34915134
The brother's haven't evolved. We'll say that Lyra has a maximum bonus. Aria and Sara are neck and neck, for entirely different reasons, and going in entirely different directions, and they're both a step down from you. The brother's competition has pushed them a step or two above regular arachne, and Elle's early adventures have left her a step above.

They've got more time, but they're settling into their ways.

Thanks for playing. It's not that bad with the updates- It's more a complaint that I'm pretty slow to start, and trying to make a conversation flow properly between topics while not treating a character like a search engine is hard. I really want people to treat each other like people, and to sound like it, so rewriting is fairly frequent.

You grabbed candy and dried meats for everyone, and some fishing gear for the boys.

>>34915298
Achievements are pretty much anything at all. Using your magic, or the magic sight pushes the evolution in that direction. Fighting close in, tanking hits, moves it over there. I'm leery of bringing rank up requirements out into the open- I want them to be a fun surprise type of thing. You can count on me ticking off notes for fighting styles and stuff though.
>>
>>34915482
>trying to make a conversation flow properly between topics while not treating a character like a search engine is hard. I really want people to treat each other like people
You've been doing a really good job of that so far, the family has had a very cozy kind of feel to it
>>
>>34915436
It'll be up in the paste later, but essentially: She's not as strong as you or Aria, but she's even closer to her element now. Mana refinement is easier, casting is easier, and she can call a few of her little stars out without casting at all, as an elemental ability. Casting properly would make them stronger, though.
>>
>>34915529
Thanks, that's good to hear.

its better kept hidden I think, it keeps the characters more human instead of being a pile of stats and abilities.

>Elle's early adventures have left her a step above.
How can we trick Elle to come on adventures with us to boost her bonus?

Maybe we could evolutions with Mom, and convince her to let us do a family training trip/'get to know your roots' field trip to a ruin. Someplace we can get into fights with strong monsters.

Also, since even crafting and weaving provides some XP, if Elle were to push herself into making more complex and sophisticated clothing, would that boost her XP bonus and help her evolve?

Pushing her crafting further will help a bit- It'd be better for her if she pushed herself to produce silk. Skills that aren't accompanied by pushing yourself in some way are limited.

With all the silk they recently got. From trade that little town should start expanding.
+ The mine we introduced should count for a bit.
The town will start growing, into a small city. Basically thanks to our efforts. And with that said, even on top of the going price for silk. we should get a discount on the good stuff the trader will have for sale.
>>
>They tend to look a bit 'softer' than other widow arachne, with their chitin not taking on as harsh spikes.

The more magical she becomes the more cuddly she is.
>>
>>34916787

We must grind her magic stat.

Also, the gap between Lyra and her most evolved siblings is pretty damn huge, like, it's possible to even it out if Aria or Sara try REALLY DAMN HARD but I don't think they'll ever surpass us.

Ah well, Aria can't live in our Shadow if we die fighting a dragon or something, which is what our bullshit advancement rate is leading up towards.
