>Recap
We follow the tales of a bard, recanting the adventures of a Witcher by the name of Garland. Trained by the school of the Panther Garland is a monster slayer specializing in stealth and surprise tactics. With him he has a young apprentice Xander, who is learning the ways of a Witcher.

On this current adventure Garland has traveled to the city of Starkhaven, to end a curse and retrieve a sorceress. While there he met Yarven Golt, an old friend from a past adventure. Hopefully together they will be able to find a way into the noble quarter of the city, and meet with the sorceress face to face.

Huh I might actually be awake for some of this one today. Yay.
>>
Good day, good day, good day! Yes it is I Dandrick the Lion here to bring you another tale of Witchery! I know I am early, most of you probably haven’t even finished your first ale yet! But telling tales is so very exciting. I should warn you I have been reading another man’s recollection of a Witcher’s tales, and while vastly different to Garland’s, they are very interesting, usually I am a man of the spoken word rather than the written, but he has truly captured me. So I must warn you in advance that some of his style may slip in amongst my storyspinning!

Ah yes! Of course I must return to my account, and let me do so by setting the scene.

It was early morning, naught but an hour had passed since the sun had first peeked over the edge of the horizon to begin its lazy journey across the sky. Soft light filtered in from the window of the small inn room Yarven had procured for the Witcher Garland. He lay awake upon the woollen mattress which was his resting place, listening to the soft footfalls approach him from the door. In his dreams those light steps could only belong to a beautiful, pale-skinned maiden come to rouse him with the supple taste of her body.

But of course he was not so lucky.

Through lowered eyelids and a curtain of lashes he spied the apprentice creeping carefully forwards. Both as silent and tentative as a cat, the boy slid across the floor like a ghost, making only the quietest of noises upon the wooden flooring. In his hand Garland spied a large clay pitcher, likely filled with ice cold water from the local well if Garland knew the boy at all. He couldn’t truly blame him, had he not attempted to sneak upon his own master just under a month ago? The question was what to do.

>Stop him now
>Wait for him to approach, then catch him at the last moment.
>Let him think he has his victory
>Pounce him and pour the pitcher down HIS face, see how he likes it.
>>
>>34937234
I'm going to be trying to start them around this time. No promises but I'll give it a shot.

Gets out of bed while his back is turned. Hide amongst the shadows. While he looks around bewildered move towards him and stop a few inches away. When he turns and sees Garland suddenly standing right in front of him, calmly take the pitcher from his hand and pour it over his head.

Garland was never one for silly games, especially after a night of drinking – though I’m not entirely sure if a Witcher is even capable of being hung over. So while I may have used his skills to wait until the last moment then sloshed the water over my apprentice’s head, he went with far more of a simple approach.

“That had best be ale, or I might have to knock you flat just as that Elf did.” He growled, his voice more gravelly than usual due to the grog of sleep still upon his waking body. Opening one eye to look at the young man, he noted the disappointed look of surprise at being caught change to a sour look of unmistakable bitterness.

“I could have taken him, had I not fought the others before him, I was worn out.” He whined almost like a child, as he placed the pitcher on a nearby table surreptitiously, so as to avoid having to hold it and look more of a fool. As he did this he raised a hand to the dark circle around one of his eyes. It was already healing quickly due to the mutagens he had thus far received, but was still quite obvious.

“And yet he fought the same number and still thrashed you.” Commented the elder Witcher as he stood from his bed and began to dress. He had never removed his medallion through the night, and only did so briefly so that he might get into his leather tunic without hassle. His comment received nothing but silence, until finally the boy spoke again, some of the sulkiness gone from his voice.

“So what do we do now?”

“We find work,” he said simply in reply as he buckled his sword-belt across his chest and adjusted it firmly with one gloved hand. This answer seemed enough to satisfy the lad, and brighten his mood somewhat. With a smile he tossed Garland his bag, which the older man caught deftly and slipped around himself, adjusting its ties as he had adjusted the belt, before the two headed for the door and left the little room to begin their adventures.

As they left the inn, bursting out into the early morning sunlight Garland paused. He had intended to head straight for the local guard house to see if he could get official papers from them – Yarven had said it might be a bit of work but he was willing to put in the effort if it got him where he wanted to be – but he paused and turned to look at a notice board up against the wall of the inn.

The board was simple, with a number of job listings available for all forms of work, from physical labour to guild invitations. But such places were often useful for finding mercenary work, which more often than not fell into Witcher work as well. On this day he was not disappointed.

>con'td
>>
He was not surprised by the jobs he found, a number of them had been mentioned by Yarven himself the night before. The first was a request from a guardsman who was in charge of the common quarter, a number of individuals had been reported missing and the guard was seeking any information local folk may have. Those interested were to speak to Captain Yurik, and pay was stated to be good.

The second was also familiar, and was a compilation of reports noting strange sounds coming up from the sewers around town. Some people reported hearing cries of pain or surprise in the middle of the night, others claimed that the disappearances were connected to the events in the sewer. There was no listed payment.

The third contract was actually addressed to “All mercenaries, monster hunters and Witchers,” which Garland found interesting, direct requests to Witchers were rare these days, especially from folks lucky enough to have such large walls. It was a request from a local farmer’s guild for assistance with monster attacks around the fringes of the city, claiming they would pay as best they could manage.

Finally there was a single report written in charcoal upon a dirty piece of parchment. A woman reported her husband missing, claiming that a succubus had seduced him and taken him from her. She stated she would pay any price to have him back.

>Which jobs do you take?

I assume the first 2 are connected?
>>
>>34938139
I'll second these choices
>>
>>34938139
May I ask for the reasoning? Just out of curiosity
>>
>>34938192
The first seems related to the second and has good payment.
3 is a more or less simple monster extermination and the farmer's guild should also be able to pay well. Also something outside of the citywalls.
4. Seems like there is more to it
>>
>>34938139
those seem good
>>
Garland didn’t bother memorizing the posted requests and simply tore off those that attracted his attention. He took the missing person’s report, the monster killing contract and the not about the missing husband, sliding them into a pocket of his bag after folding them in half gently. He was also interested in the contract about the sewer creature, but intuition told him he would likely end up coming to the end of that mystery anyway.

With all this done the two departed from the inn, weaving through the already busy market streets in search of the local guard house. They didn’t have to hunt hard, such places are always easy to find, within ten minutes Garland found himself rapping upon the door, before a local guard opened a slot in the door.

“What d’you want?” he said, his voice sounding more bored than anything else. Indeed from what little of the man Garland could see, he seemed rather unhappy to be on duty this day.

“I wish to see the Captain.” His voice came out equally dull and flat, he wasn’t looking forward to this, he never did.

The slot in the door closed and there were murmured voices from behind the iron reinforced wood. Then came a scrape, then a clunk, and finally a click as the door was opened and the two Panthers were ushered inside by the uninterested guardsman.

Now those of you who have been following my stories likely remember Klemens Barth, a rather dirty old man with a big belly and an ego to match. That guard captain had a penchant for whores, an untidy office and greeted Garland with a sneer. Upon first glance Captain Yurik seemed to be the complete antithesis of Barth.

He was a tall lanky fellow with thick curly black hair, a thin moustache and eyes so dark they seemed almost black. He stood from his seat behind his remarkably tidy desk and flashed Garland a grin so large it revealed the gums above and below his stark white surprisingly perfect teeth.

“Ah! so the Witchers finally comes to see me!” he cried joyously, a greeting so merry that Garland felt uneasy, this was not the usual treatment he would receive from such men. You can understand his relief then, when as soon as the door was closed behind them the man dropped his hands, dropped his smile and waved a hand unceremoniously to the chairs before his desk before dropping back into his chair and giving Garland a sour look as he rested his head on his hands. “Let’s get this over with, what do you want?”

“I’m sure you know why I’m here, so-“ Garland began as he took his seat, placing his elbows on the table and leaning forward in a “let’s get down to business” manner. But as he did this he was interrupted by the man, who waved a hand in the air dismissively as he talked.

“Of course I do, as if I didn’t have enough to deal with,” he began, his voice not grating in the same way Barth’s had when the man had given a similar speech, but instead with a whining drawl which was equally irritating. “First the plague, then Lord Gunther decides my men aren’t doing well enough and closes off the noble quarter, not to mention the disappearances and-“

This time it was Garland who interrupted “That’s actually one of the things I’m here to talk about,” he began, taking the opportunity to end this man’s bitching. “I saw the contract on the notice boards,” he punctuated this fact by withdrawing the paper from his bag and unfolding it upon the table. “I bet my bag of crowns you don’t want me here interfering with your business, so how about we kill two birds with one stone, or three as the case may be.” The man said nothing, but gave the Witcher a look that said “go on then” from behind his laced fingers. “I propose a deal, I take on this job as Witcher’s work, you get your mystery solved, I get papers into the Noble Quarter, everybody is happy.”

Captaiin Yurik’s dark eyes narrowed at him, and a shrewd smile played across his face. “Do you take me for a fool Witcher? I know your kind, you’d be doing that job whether I gave you papers or not, and getting paid on top? Seems like a fairly unbalanced trade if you ask me.”

>Listen to his counter proposal
>Withdraw your offer of service

>>
He said nothing, letting the man make his proposal. He supposed that it was at least worth listening to, though that didn’t necessarily mean he was going to accept the deal. It was abundantly clear that Captain Yurik was shrewd, and interested in his personal standing more than anything else. Or at least that was the impression Garland had received thus far.

“I know why you are here Witcher, but I couldn’t give half a damn were I to try. Your business is your own. My problem is that my job is on the line here, with all the problems this city is suffering at the moment I don’t look very good in the eyes of our esteemed Lord Gunther.” He said his lord’s name with the same sourness he applied to the word Witcher, and Garland couldn’t help but wonder how far his standings would fall if his Lord knew his true feelings. “My biggest concern right now is controlling the plague, missing people and deep sheep come second. What I require from you is some covert assistance, provide me that and I’ll gladly write you the papers you need to get out of my district.”

“And what sort of work does covert assistance entail?” Xander piped in, his interest clearly piqued, after all he sought action, not negotiation.

>cont'd
>>
But he was ignored, without being given so much as a glance. “There is a band of Scoia’tael outside the walls of the city, until now they’ve been little more than a nuisance, but things have changed.” By the lords this man enjoyed the sound of his voice, Garland tapped the table restlessly, indicating he wanted the man to get to the point, but just as Xander had been, he was ignored. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the source of the damned plague!” neither Witcher nor apprentice thought it prudent to ask why Scoia’tael would be interested in starting a non-human killing plague, and thus Yurik continued unabated. “They’ve been sneaking non-humans out of the district, and as his Lordship wants the area contained, these escapes are a big problem for me – for us I mean.”

“And we’re to…?” Garland asked, waving a hand in a circle against his better judgement urging the man to whine – I mean speak – on.

“Kill them of course!” he said, as if this had been obvious from the beginning “Isn’t that what Witchers do? Kill those who threaten human lands?”

“No, I kill monsters. You want to kill some Elves and Dwarves living out in the woods? Get yourself some mercenaries.” He said this with absolute certainty, if there’s one thing you’ll come to know about Garland as I tell his tale it is that he never breaks his integrity.

“Aye! Who do you think we are!” Xander agreed, slapping the table angrily. It seemed he had already begun to take his lessons to heart, or perhaps he was just willing to follow on Garland’s heels in this moment.

Captain Yurik looked bitter, and as he looked at Xander the coldness in his eyes looked on par with that of a Wraith’s. He didn’t say a word to the boy, only a look that oozed distaste and implied the boy better shut his trap and let the big boys talk. “Witcher come now, you must understand that these Scoia’tael ARE monsters in their own right, isn’t that why you have a steel sword? They’ve pillaged our caravans, killed guardsmen and might even be behind the missing people and livestock!” he said all this with the amiable nature of a man explaining to a stubborn child. “And now they’re exposing people to a dangerous plague, don’t you think that warrants your sword?”

>>
Xander had begun to look unsure of himself, and to be honest who could truly blame him? Looking on the surface Yurik made a good point, but of course Garland knew there was surely more to this situation than the man let on. He had seen the racism of the guards yesterday, it was clear who was favoured in this city on that alone, but then there was the curse masqueraded as a plague.

“I’ve already refused you, I’ll not stood to paid murder.” He said firmly, crossing his arms in a defiant posture I came to know well travelling with the man. “I’ll give you a counter offer, as I need those papers no matter the situation. In exchange for you writing up papers for myself and my apprentice, we will tend to the missing people and missing livestock free of charge – save for the papers of course.”

Yurik reclined into his chair, one hand coming to his chin as he considered the offer. There was a long moment of silence in which neither man spoke, neither yielding their position. Then finally Yurik broke the silence with a question “And if you were to find out that Scoia’tael were responsible for either?”

>”I would get rid of them.”

>>
>>34940177
It's the farmer's guild thing.

Livestock is missing, Farmer's have been attacked and some property damage to boot.
>>
This was a tricky question to answer, as Garland himself didn’t know what the result would be until he could judge the situation for himself. He had put down humans, elves and dwarves before in his time as a Witcher, but only the worst kind, or those who needed a mercy death. He didn’t know whether these hypothetical Scoia’tael were worth a Witcher’s blade yet. And so he simply answered as honestly as he could without upsetting the Captain.

“I’ll deal with it.” The blatant flatness and finality of that statement cannot be expressed by such a cheerful bard as myself, but I can tell you it implied the very worst, without actually confirming anything.

It seemed Yurik was satisfied with this and flashed that same amiable grin as he had when Garland came in. However now that he had seen the truth behind that smile, he couldn’t help but compare it to that of a wolf – almost a snarl somehow. “Then we have an agreement.” He said pleasantly, honey coated words to hide the bitterness beneath. This was a man who didn’t like to lose, and though he hadn’t entirely been outmanoeuvred here, he hadn’t gotten what he expected. “Then if that’s all we need to talk about…” he said, mimicking Garland’s gesture from earlier goading him to continue talking or get the hell out.

“Before I go I’d like more information on the missing people; age, gender, occupation, the basic information. You’d be surprised how often this is overlooked.” He said this casually enough, but there was a hint of “I’m sure you’ve missed something” in his last words. Yurik was not the only one unhappy with their current situation.

If he heard the jab in his voice, Yurik chose to ignore it, unlike Xander who was grinning ear to ear as he pretended to cough into a closed fist. “Those who have disappeared have been as young as seventeen and as old as fifty three. They are predominantly male, with only two of the sixteen or so reported missing being female. A number of those who have gone missing were students at the academy within the noble quarter.” He grabbed a sheet of paper then, running his eyes across it “They’ve been reported missing approximately three to four days apart, and seem to vanish in the dead of night.” The tone of boredom in his voice was infuriating; as if he didn’t even care his own people were going missing. “No trace of violence at the home, nor at their places of work or study.”

Garland nodded “That’s all.” he confirmed, standing from his chair and beckoning his apprentice up too. The Witcher and apprentice left then without a word of thanks or even a farewell, having concluded their business in a somewhat unpleasant manner. As he never looked back, it was only Xander who saw the scowl on the guardsman’s face as his office was vacated, leaving him to his work behind his desk. That scowl spelled trouble for the two, but of course at the time the Witcher-in-training couldn’t know such a thing.

From there they went to the market. They had travelled far and would likely need to stock up on travelling supplies before they left, but that was not what Garland had in mind as he began scanning the stores. When finally he found a small medicinal store adjoining a herbalist’s, he knew he had found the place he sought.

cont'd
>>
As he passed he noted that the herbalist’s store was run by a young woman with red hair. She was watering herbs as they passed and her ample chest was on full display for both Garland and the eager young Xander to appreciate. I tell you this only so that you may understand what Garland came to realize when he met with the medicine woman, who was old with greyed hair and wrinkled face. Though she was old, Garland could see strands of red in her hair, and a face that was likely just as pretty as the young maiden’s in the past. The two were likely related.

“Greetings old mother,” he said as he entered the small store, which smelled of a strange combination of flowers and refined chemicals. “Might I ask for supplies?”

The old woman leaned forward, squinting at him with her sunken green eyes. “Yer a polite one…” she mused, then visibly started when his quite honestly frightening visage came to her through the blur. “A Witcher? In my store? I’m sorry to say I only have some humble goods, nothing an alchemist like yourself would want.”

“Not so good woman, I’m no master of the craft.” This was true, and he was not ashamed to admit it had not been a skill he took to well. He knew some things, but even at Kaer Morabeth alchemy was not one of the talents they encouraged, hence why they needed the sorceress for the trial of the grasses. “I seek only some bases, a weak alcohol should do.”

“Ah well that I can provide ye, how many? I can part with a bottle for five crowns.”

“Can you spare ten doses?” he asked, reaching for his coin purse as he did so.

The woman looked thoughtful, then shuffled to the back of her store where there stood a basic wooden door. Garland assumed it was a storage closet, but was surprised to see it open up into the herbalist’s next door. “Silje!” croaked the woman as close to yelling as she could manage “How much did the red woman take of the bases I prepared?”

Though he didn’t see her, Garland heard the young woman reply, and noticed Xander perk up at her voice. “Twelve? I don’t know Auntie you’re the one who should keep track of that.”

The old woman grumbled and closed the door with a loud bang, then shuffled out to the back of her store through another door, returning after some time. “I can fetch you nine, will that do ya?”

“Aye, that will do me fine.” Garland said as he placed the appropriate 45 crowns onto the counter. The woman counted the pieces slowly, inspecting one to determine its validity before taking them, storing them beneath her counter and shuffling off to retrieve the vials he sought. When she returned she had a small leather pouch filled with vials, which Garland took and thanked her.

the alchemy system
>>
>>34941533
Too bad I'm shit at explaining.
But it's pretty easy ones you get the hang of it.
just consult the pdf for our recipes and ingredients
>>
>>34941533
Well my system is a bit different to the game's system anyway.

Potions are easy, you get a base, weak medium or strong, and mix in what the recipe says you mix in.

Poisons and oils are basically the same.

And Bombs re similar except you're making a number of different bases from other ingredients including gunpowder.

Having procured his goods Garland went to leave the store, but as he turned to return to the inn and mix his potions he heard Xander call him. He turned and was not surprised to see the young man standing by the door to the herbalist’s shop, surrounded by potted plants.

“Uh, Garland, don’t you think you could buy some herbs to make other potions with?” he asked hopefully.

It was clear the boy was lovesick, perhaps for the first time in his life. After all the only other woman he had really ever seen would have been Liesa, and she wasn’t exactly full-busted, nor very feminine in general. Still to be so distracted by what amounted to a flower girl he saw for but a minute was far too typical of a normal teenager. Besides the woman was probably ten years or so older than he, closer to Garland’s age than the apprentice’s.

Being a lover of ladies myself I can understand where Xander was coming from, and it isn’t as though Garland wasn’t partial to a good pair of breasts on display himself, it is simply that he has more subtly to him, perhaps due to his Panther training. There have been times where he and I have come together to appreciate the beautiful flowers of a city before, and this moment was no different for the apprentice and himself, though the boy did receive “the look” as Garland turned around to enter.

“Morning,” came the cheerful voice of the girl the older woman had called Silje. Garland spied her at the back behind some rather tall plants, filling her watering can from a basin before coming out to the store to continue her work. She was smiling brightly, and though she was pretty he had already noted other flowers of interest.

Most of the store was filled with your average garden variety cooking herbs, as well as some made for medicine. These were of little interest to him as they were more for boil ointments than for healings salves. But there were a few plants that caught his eye. There was some wolfsbane, of which he already had some, there was a relatively common spice known simply as “allspice” which had roots that could produce aether, as well as some bloodthistle (which as you may know is a powerful painkiller and is used as a drug by some), Cortinarius a fungus that commonly grows in woods which contains hydragenum, and some Fool’s Parsley – a swamp plant not natural to the Starkhaven area, with leaves that can be ground to produce Rubedo and roots that provide Quebrith.

“Can I help you?” the herbalist girl asked Xander, who had frozen dead in his tracks as she rounded the counter and passed by him. She seemed completely at ease with the fact a Witcher and a young boy who looked half-way to Witcherhood were standing in her store.

“I uh, we um…” the boy stammered, then looked to his master for aid. “We need some err…” I have to say I have always struggled with this part of Garland's tale. How can somebody who has faced Wraiths head on, and gone through a number of mutations be so flustered with a woman? I suppose it comes down to talent, if I were in his shoes I feel I would have been competent in the opposite areas, but you never know until you experience it first hand I suppose. Perhaps she truly was a beauty beyond measure? I shall never know for myself.

“I’ll just take two Allspice roots, and that Fool’s Parsley you have by the water,” he said, gesturing for the plants that he sought as he chose them. There were very few plants that were universally named, and so he had found it best to point to the products he chose rather than try and figure out the local names.

Silje’s eyes lit up as he gestured for the Fool’s Parsley “Ah!” she cried clasping her hands together with an excited clap “I was hoping somebody who knew the value of the plant would be buying it, most simply see it as a swamp plant.” That said she put on some gloves, grabbed a pair of snipping tools and was about to get to work when a devilish Idea came to the Witcher.

“And miss… I’m sure you understand my profession and why I have come to your store,” at this she nodded, prompting him to continue “And you see my apprentice here, he’s still quite green if you would pardon the pun, and I was hoping you could show him a thing or two, teach him about the herbs you have on offer?”

Xander’s head snapped towards him so fast I wonder how his neck managed not to snap. Garland described the look on his face to me many years ago, and I haven’t forgotten it, just the thought makes me chuckle. He said the boy looked like a deer they once hunted, it noticed them at the last moment and it looked both bewildered and terrified.

“Oh of course,” Silje the herbalist girl said pleasantly, beckoning for Xander to come join her by a bunch of flowering plants. When all he did was stare she laughed and grabbed him by the wrist. “Don’t worry I’m sure my lessons won’t be as harsh as his.” She said, and pulled him over to the plants. By the time he was there his face was almost as red as the plants themselves, or her hair for that matter. If she noticed she said nothing, just as he said nothing the entire time she toured him through her store. I have to wonder how much of that time he spent stealing glances at her bosom? Am I a lesser man for expecting it to be at least half the time? Perhaps.

After they were done Garland paid the young lady and the two were on their way back to the inn. As they went Xander muttered “I’ll get you for that…” under his breath, but it was loud enough for Garland to hear.

“Don’t be foolish, that was me getting you back for this morning.” In that moment they were like a pair of brothers rather than master and apprentice, and Garland said he remembered those days fondly.

I won’t bore you with the processes Garland went through to create his potions, primarily because I don’t know them myself. I’ve seen him work before, crushing plant petals down, boiling moss and grating roots, but to be honest everything he ever tried to explain went right over my head. I’ll simply tell you that he made two doses of Stallion, and one each of Fox, Serpent, Bear and Hawk.

That done his potion belt was practically brimming with options with which he could prepare for all manner of situations. During the process he also showed Xander his work, and while the apprentice likely learned as much as myself from that one experience, it gave him some ideas for how he could apply similar alchemical skills to making useful Lures and perhaps even poisons for his arrows.

By the time all was said and done late afternoon was on its way into early evening and Garland had a choice to make. He could head out to the farms now, but by the time he got there it would be nightfall. This was not necessarily a bad thing, as all the issues the farmer’s were suffering seemed to come with nightfall, as was often the case. However he would lose any chance of questioning the farmer’s until daybreak. Alternatively he could stay in the city, he would have enough time to question the common folk about the disappearances before nightfall, after which he could choose to sleep or continue investigating. Of course he could just stay at the inn, wait for Yarven to arrive and have a good chat, potentially gaining a sewer map in the process.

>Head for the farms

Garland was impatient, and would use any amount of time available to him. If he didn’t have a chance to go talk to the farmer’s this day he would simply have to go tomorrow. For now he would do what he could. Leaving his room which now smelled of alcohol and mixed herbs, the Witcher snatched his apprentice up from the dice table he had plopped himself down upon and the two headed out from there and into the cooling evening.

He didn’t exactly know who he would need to question, or where he could start in the Common Quarter, but it didn’t matter. Answers such as those usually came when he got to where he needed to be, and he expected this situation to be no different. With that in mind he strode confidently along the main road that would take him through the gates into the common quarter. He had no clue what breed of beast, monster or man awaited him, but it didn’t matter, no matter the source evil needed to be eradicated.
