Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you counted your massive amounts of money and then decided to relax on the beach.

Profectus is the first to speak, seemingly confused. “What do you need beyond a loin cloth and perhaps a breast wrap? It's swimming, not a gala event.”

Darzi seems offended, folding her arms in front of her chest and adopting a stand-offish posture. “Do elves really show that much skin when they go swimming? Why not simply go naked, if you're going to do nothing but cover your breast and groin?”

Prof shrugs nonchalantly. “Actually, elves would show more usually. The breast wrap is considered unnecessary unless one is attempting to imitate the Rhynian style.” He smirks, his tone becoming sardonic. “Although, I suppose if we really wanted to imitate the Rhynian style our men would go nude and fondle little boys.”

Mortia sighs melodramatically. “That old fable again? My mother told me that was a myth, slander designed by the dark el-” She pauses, clearing her throat. “Samjan, rather. To demonize the empire.” Was she about to call you an elf? It sort of seemed like she was about to call you an elf. You're not sure how you feel about that.

Profectus shakes his head. “It wasn't a fable, Mortia. Trust me. That sort of degeneracy was disgustingly widespread within the Empire. Especially within the military.” You find it somewhat ironic that an elf is remarking on the degeneracy of another race, but keep those thoughts to yourself.

Darzi had grown progressively more irritated throughout this conversation. She chooses to cut in just as Profectus finishes speaking, likely in the hopes of heading off any further drift off topic. “Can we not talk about Rhynian pederasty right now? Clothes, people. We're looking for clothes. Focus.”

(1/2 or 3, trying to use more line breaks, though I can't say I'm fond of how the result looks.)
>>
Chryssa joins the conversation, seemingly utterly nonplussed by the conversation thus far. “Is there a place to buy clothes in this village? It is not particularly large, I would think that most clothing is spun by wives and daughters rather than bought in a market.”

Darzi grumbles something unintelligible, taking a moment to glare down the street. You join her, absentmindedly looking around for a tailor or market stall. You don't see anything in the immediate area, but as you and your party progress towards the town center you note more and more market stalls popping up on either side of the road. Some of them are closed, or in the process of closing, for the day but Darzi points out a weaver's stall that appears to be open. It has a collection of wool, flax, cotton, and even sea silk garments. Most of them are of course done in the Samjan style; that is to say airy, flowing robes with either floral or geometric designs, if any.

Darzi throws her arms companionably around Chrys and Mortia's shoulders, dragging the two women off towards the stall. Fulvia, Profectus, and yourself are left standing around uncomfortably while those three, really just Darzi and Mortia, excitedly chatter about the quality of the fabric and the design of the garments. Come to think of it, it seems kind of rude that Darzi didn't include Fulvia, but you suppose Fulvia can just appear to be wearing any garment she wishes. You consider pulling out a book and reading to pass the time, but Profectus tugs on your sleeve and points to another stall tended by an elderly looking Samjan. A long white beard dangles down past his waist and even long hair trailing down his back. You'd estimate him to be roughly of an age with your Master, so around five hundred.

(2/3)
>>
He's got a collection of all sorts of knicknacks sitting in front of him. Swords, spears, shields, cutlery, pots, pans, a suit of lamellar armor, a bird singing away cheerily in a cage, and who knows what else. Those are just the items that immediately catch your eye. Profectus' eye seems to be drawn to the fine collection of alcohol the man has on display, or perhaps the row of pipes sitting on a rack next to the booze. “Check that guy out. I'll bet you five gold that guy's got some artifacts to sell.”

You channel just a touch of vys into your armor and the world fades away, replaced by the ebb and flow of ambient vys. Mortia is glowing like a damned lantern in a dark room, even with the relatively high amount of vys in your surroundings. The vast majority of the glow stems from artifacts on her person, you spot what you think might be a sword and a small collection of beads, but beyond that it's hard to tell. The man also has a glowing point of light on his chest, likely an enchanted necklace of some sort, and the lamellar armor glows softly. Perhaps a former adventurer pawning some of his old finds?

Once we're in our cloak, can we use magic to do things? Or is it the nature of the void itself that vys is absorbed?

Also, could we be partially in our cloak wearing the centurion armor such there there is a constant air supply coming from outside the cloak?

If both of those things are possible, I think it would be really cool to try to learn Void Sign by using tendrils of water instead of our hands while meditating. The meditation would be incredibly difficult because we would have to prevent the water from evaporating in the vacuum while simultaneously ensuring that out suit has an air supply and trying to focus on what is presumably an incredibly complicated language. Maybe that could be how we try to get insight into water grandmastery

You shake your head. “I'm not taking that bet, I know for a fact he's selling at least one enchanted artifact. Lets check it out.” You shift your attention to Fulvia. “Want to come with us? Better than standing her alone.”

She nods her head brusquely. “I believe I would enjoy that, yes.” With that settled, the three of you make your way across the square to the old man's stall. He looks up as you approach, pulling a long pipe from his mouth and exhaling a billowing blue cloud from his nostrils. When he speaks, he speaks slowly and his words slur together. “Whatcha need m'fellow travelers 'pon this wretched world of ours?”

Profectus turns to you, utterly uncomprehending. “That was just a random string of syllables and noises, you can't tell me those were actually words.”

You wave Profectus off absentmindedly, responding to the merchant in your native tongue. “Just a look at your wares, my friend. Tell me, where you once an adventurer?”

The old man responds with a lethargic nod. “Once 'pon a time, sure. Y'could say I plundered th'darkest depths this side of Elaudia.” He bites down on the wooden bit, his teeth clacking loudly against the wood. He stops speaking to take a deep drag, the contents of the bowl glowing a bright orange before he pulls the bit from his mouth and exhales another cloud of blue smoke. “I gotcha armor, weapons, even gotcha th'sorta mundane whatchmacallit, y'know.” He waves the pipe around in vague sort of gesture, leaving you to fill in the rest.

Your mind is briefly assaulted by the image of the bird, and then an almost comical depiction of Ricky swallowing said bird whole, and wrapping you in his tentacles. A gesture you think might represent a hug. You're a little taken aback when you return to the land of the living, though it doesn't appear as though any time has passed. Seems Ricky wants a snack. You ignore him for a moment, instead looking over the rest of the man's wares. The armor sparks your interest, if only because it looks particularly ancient. The plates that compose the lamellar are not of iron or steal, but rather the same material that makes up your Hiacian Warlock Armor, that is to say the carapace of the Palaka Worm. That would make it a relic from the Hiacian Empire, as the secrets to shaping carapace have been lost to the ages. You also note a small handle-shaped object that exudes vys, enough that you can feel it even without your magic sight. You've little idea what it might do though. Other than those two items, you don't see anything of particular interest.

You examine some of his other stuff, but nothing really stands out. While you look over his wares you absentmindedly ask. “Mind telling me about some of your adventures? I've delved a number of ruins myself, and made something of a career out of it.”

He waves his pipe around again, though this time it seems more like excitement than confusion. “Sure! I can tell yah a thing or two 'bout our lil' trade.” He clears his throat, or attempts to. He actually ends up descending into a fit of coughing that last several minutes before he eventually gets himself under control. “I 'member this'un-” He gestures to the strange handle made of what you think might be Elaudian steel that you were examining earlier. “-in an old fort right on th'border of Elaudia. Big ol'...” He trails off, holding his hands out. You're not really sure what he's trying to get across. “Big ol' thing. Walls, gate. Whole shebang. Collapsed, mostly. Just walked right on into the place.”

He pauses to take another long drag from his pipe. “Place was... filled up with all manner of critters. You name 'em. Flyin' saddles, swamp turtles, stags, mutants, wolves. Lost a friend on my way down. Wolf sprayed it with that acid what shoots out of their mouths, y'know?” You don't, but you don't interrupt him. “Y'know, though. It's really the turtles y'gotta look out for. Size of a house, bigger even. Sharp teeth. Three or four rows. Thick hide too, and thicker shell. Tough bastards, better to just run away instead of face 'em.”

He seems to be getting off topic, so you decide to gently redirect him back to the handle. “And the device, where did you find it?” He looks at you confused for a moment before realization dawns on his face. “Oooh! Right, right. Yeah. Found it in a... uhhh, whatcha-” He scratches the back of his head for a moment, clearly thinking hard on the subject. “Vault! A vault, yeah. Big ol' thing. Locked up tight. Had to search the place high and low to find the combination. Right. Yeah.” This old man is really scatterbrained. “It's Elaudian, made of that weird metal of theirs. Y'press a button, and a blade slides out. 'Cept, it's not really a blade. It's more like...lightning bolt given shape n' form.”

Well, that answers two of your questions then. That was rather convenient. You've little idea what on Earth a lightning bolt given shape and form might look like though. Sounds like overly poetic garbage, but what do you know? “What about the armor?”

He peers at you for a moment, and then turns his attention to the armor. “That? That's, uhh... found it in an old house. Buried under a dune. Partially, that is. Dragged it out. Pretty sturdy, good armor. Wore it for a while. Not all that magical though. Jus' makes the desert a little easier to traverse. Replenishes the body, n' whatnot.” He wave his pipe around in a vaguely dismissive manner.

You gesture to the bird. “And what about this little guy?” He stares at you for a short while before responding perplexedly. “That's a bird.” You nod. “Yes, but is he for sale?” The old man folds his arms in front of his chest, spilling some ash on his pants. “It's a she, and no she ain't!”

Nope, I like Ricky too. It's just the difference between feeding your bud a chicken and feeding your bud a pet. That doesn't mean it's not a dick move to buy someone's pet and then feed it to your cloak monster. So hold off for now, and buy him a chicken or something to make up for it.

You pluck up the handle-shaped device. It seems to shift and mold itself to the shape of your hand, it actually ends up being a rather comfortable fit. It's almost spongy, in a strange sort of way. “Mind if I try this thing out?”

He waves a hand vaguely in the air. “Sure, just uh... point it towards the ground.” You do so, and then fiddle with the handle a bit. That doesn't seem to do anything, so you try channeling vys into it. That doesn't do anything either, frustratingly enough. You glance up at the merchant and he coughs into his fist, gesturing vaguely at the device. When his coughing fit clears he says simply. “Button, on the top. Press it down.”

You look at the handle closely, but don't see a button. There is a gem that sorta looks like a button, you press down on it and in an instant a long, rounded shaft has slid out of the handle and incinerated several inches of dirt, forming a ovoid hole. It's a bright orange in color, and waves of heat practically boil off of it. Strangely enough it doesn't scorch your hand, even though it's only a few inches away from the blade.

You pull it carefully out of the ground and turn away from the stall, taking a swing. The blade bends and stretches outwards, almost like a whip, and lashes against the ground. A long scorch mark is left where it touched. Odd, very odd. A bolt of energy shoots along the blade, arcing from the tip to the ground, and then another. It seems like this would be a pretty difficult weapon to master, since it extends whenever you swing it. You'd be worried about hitting one of your companions by accident in a melee. However, it certainly seems effective.

So Soma, can I ask you real quick whether or not this introductory paragraph:

>When you round the corner, you find her slowly pushing her way back to her feet. If you didn't know better, you could almost mistake her for a construct. The armor makes her seem completely genderless, and from a distance it's hard to tell whether or not she's simply made of metal. The only thing visible is a single eye glaring at you through the middle of the three eye holes. She seems unable to speak in the armor, but does bow her head in thanks at least.

Means that Chryssa would be unable to use the Eludian armor?

The armor seemed to flow around its wearer, changing its shape to suit them. For instance, when you found it it was way, way larger than Darzi. Thicker, and stockier. A little shorter though. Then after she put it on it fit her like a glove.

Whether it would accommodate Chrys' horns, you can't be sure.

You press down on the gemstone set in the top of the handle and the blade simply dissipates into thin air. You flip the handle in the air absentmindedly before turning your attention back to the merchant. You've attracted some stares due to your little demonstration of the weapon, but by and large people seem nonplussed. This is a really weird little village. “I'll take the blade and the armor. How much?”

Ricky screeches quietly into your mind after you mention what you'd like to purchase, projecting an image of the bird again. You respond by thinking very hard in his general direction about chickens. He responds to this with the image of a camel. Your counter offer is two chickens and a sheep. He responds with two chickens and a lamb instead of a sheep. You're not sure what he has against sheep, but you decide that's agreeable in the end. The assault of images on your mind stops, and you're left facing the merchant. Not much time seems to have passed.

The man takes a long drag from his pipe. “Hundred thirty. Gold. Nice round number. Thirteen's an auspicious number to boot. Lucky.” He nods sagely. “Yeah, yeah I feel good about a hundred thirty. Thirty for the armor. A hundred for the relic.”

You frown, that's a bit more than you were hoping to pay. Especially considering you're just going to give the sword to one of your companions and probably the armor as well. “How about... seventy gold? Seven is even luckier than thirteen. I'm sure the gods would reward you for such generosity.” You really have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Numerology was never your cup of tea.

HAHAHAHAHA
>>
That seems to really strike his fancy, his eyes practically light up. “Wait, wait I just had a great idea. Okay, ready?” You nod. “Thirteen gold for the armor.” Pretty much dirt cheap, you're happy with that. “Twenty-three gold for the blade. Because, you know. I read a book that twenty three is everywhere. It contains the secrets to understanding the universe. That will really improve my spiritual essence, I feel.”

You nod sagely, while privately cheering the fact that this man is high off his ass and a bit loony to boot. Thirty-six gold for the whole thing! You hand over the money happily and he scoops it up with relish. You toss the relic into your cloak and then whip it off ,draping it over the armor. Ricky slips out a tentacle to help you drag the armor and its rack inside, and once he's done you whip the cloak back on. The old man didn't even seem to notice. Profectus puts a handful of gold coins down on the man's stall and takes two bottles of fine wine, tucking one into his bag and uncorking the other, taking a swig. Fulvia waits impassively, absentmindedly inspecting a knotted rope that vaguely resembles the Samjan word for 'danger'.

You stop briefly on the way back at a stall selling a wide range of livestock, from poultry, to dogs, to sheep, lamb, and goats. Even a guar, though it's old and appears sickly. You purchase a chicken and a goat for three gold coins and whip off your cloak, holding it out in front of you. Before your very eyes three tentacles whip out and pluck up your purchases, dragging them one by one kicking and screaming into the blackness of the void. The merchant, a young woman, stares at you shocked and horrified while you once more whip on your cloak and wander off.
(2/3)
>>
Your purchases made, the three of you return to the weaver's stall to find that the women, not counting Fulvia, have finished their shopping. Darzi holds a pair of sea silk pants and a loose garment vaguely resembling a shawl. Mortia simply has a loose, silken skirt and a vest. Rather risky garb for a women. Chrys is holding whatever she got under her arm, so you can't really get a good look at it.

“Ready to go?” Darzi nods, and your party once more sets off for the beach. Not the rocky shoreline you picked your way across to get to the Apothecary's hut, but rather the long stretch of white sand that made up the shore further away from the village. By the time you reach the beach, the sun is starting to drift towards the horizon but you've still got hours of sunlight left to enjoy. Darzi drags Chrys off towards a rocky outcrop, presumably so they'll be afforded some privacy while they change. Mortia simply shrugs and strips out of her clothes, she opted for robes today rather than the outfit you saw her in yesterday.

Mortia has more meat on her bones than most Samjaan women. However, she's got a generous chest and wide hips, a very Elven body type you'd call it. Unfortunately you don't get to see much of anything, as she's wearing a tight-fitting shirt beneath her robes and a pair of tight shorts made of a fabric you don't recognize. She pulls on the silk vest and pants she'd bought, and then falls back into the sand, spreading her arms out to enjoy the sun.

(3/4)
>>
You remove your cloak, stretching it out like a blanket on the sand next to you, then shed your armor and drop it into your cloak. It's strange, it just sort of slips inside, like a rock into a pond. After that you shed your monk's robes and your underrobes, until you're left in just the white cotton pants that you wear beneath your various layers of robes. They're not really proper swimming wear, but they'll do. Profectus is essentially just wearing a loin cloth after all, a strip of cloth that barely retains his modesty. So you're not the least appropriately dressed here.

Profectus immediately runs off to dive into the sea, though you're not sure if you should join him, you actually sort of wanted to meditate. You spent most of your youth submerged in salt-water trying to hold your breath long enough to slip into a trance, after all. The sea is practically your home.

>>34945546
Can the sand castle be an Earth Magic meditation? The DC to advance Earth should only be, like, 15.
>>
>>34945571
Why would this be a meditation? This seems like regular ass magic fun time
>>
If this count as a group meditation I hope it serves to push Chryssa's and Prof's levels over to Vatis
>>
>>34945587
The exercise might count as a meditation if we decide to redo it later on, might be good for insights
>>
>>34945610
Why would this help prof? Did we start him on earth? I thought we gave him fire?
>>
>>34945584
Actually, I just noticed I fucked up. I listed you as a Novice Earth Vatis with 1/2 insights, however it only takes 1 insight to reach Apprentice from Novice. So the DC would be 20. With a +4 base modifier, +2 from being a Vatis, and assuming you invite everyone to join in, a +8 total (+2 from Chrys, nobody else besides Fulvia has levels in Earth and Fulvia can't meditate.)

Anyway, group meditation session, yes/no?

The Bhataki value personal choice above all else, and so they have no tradition of arranged marriage. >(16) Duha Abdul-Hakim: Youngest Sister. Not particularly well known.
She heard tales of Mik's voyage and decided to put on the mask of the dead god we forgot to destroy.
Mik would have let her go with some light punishemnt like going killing an hydra and a behemoth without using uncle Thad's orbital lazers but the Empress said he shouldn't be lax on family.
Before being banished Mik gave her his old cloak and a brooch attuned to the surviving members of the gang, the sane ones at least.

You take a seat in the sand, staring out at your surroundings. The waves crash lazily against the beach, flowing across the sands for a short while before halting just a short way sin front of you and receding. A crab scuttles across the ground off to your left, a bit of seaweed held in its hand. It gets caught in the next wave and swept out to sea. Profectus is slamming himself into incoming waves and letting himself be carried to shore. Mortia seems to be getting ready for a nap...

It's too calm. It's too peaceful. Something... something is missing. Your very being cries out at the conspicuous absence of some undefinable quality. Something you can't quite put your finger on. Just as your anxious worrying has reached its peak, you find yourself blurting something out without really realizing what you're saying. “Lets build a sand castle.”

Mortia turns her attention towards you from her position sprawled out in the sand. “What? Why? Can't I just take a nap?” Who goes to the beach to nap? She could nap at the temple. This is important.

“No, we're building a sandcastle. All of us. As a group meditation.” Mortia pouts, opening her mouth to protest. However, you cut her off. “Listen, it'll be good for everybody to meditate as a group. Even if you don't know Earth magic, this presents an opportunity to learn. Plus, you could always help by doing other things. We're doing this. It will be the best sandcastle ever.”

She sighs dramatically, but seems to relent. Darzi and Chrys emerge from behind their rock a few moments later. You find it odd that they're wearing more or less identical outfits in different colors. They're both wearing shawls tied off just below their bust with a leather cord and You have to hand it to yourself, you really did a good job healing Darzi's scars. Were it not for the scars on her forearms, you'd never know she'd been injured at all. Her midriff, once dotted with ugly, puffed up scar tissue, is now flat and smooth. You'd even go so far as to call it flawless.

Chryssa, by contrast, is a tapestry of scar tissue. One in particular stretches almost all the way across her abdomen horizontally, like she'd been gutted. You also note a particularly nasty puckered scar in your left bicep, probably the result of an arrow. The rest of her scars are smaller, but numerous. Unlike Darzi, there is very little softness to Chryssa's body. Her bust is small and her hips mannish, though her butt is quite toned. She's muscular, though she retains her femininity. If you're being honest, most men wouldn't find her all that attractive. She goes beyond simply being athletic. Judging by the way she fidgets and tries to cover herself, you get the feeling she realizes this.

You wave the two of them over while Mortia drags herself up and comes to sit next to you. “We're making a sand castle, get down here!” Darzi breaks into a jog, Chrys reluctantly following suit. Profectus seems to hear you as well, because he starts to swim back to shore. Soon the entire group, save Fulvia, is gathered around you sitting in meditative poses, staring at you expectantly and waiting for you to begin. Fulvia is sitting off to the side. As she explained, she can't meditate but she intends to help in any way she can.

“Alright, here's what we're going to do. We're going to make the biggest, best sand castle ever. Okay? Great. I'll do most of the architectural work. I'll trust Chrys to help me with that and Fulvia to shore up any weaknesses I leave behind. The rest of you, I trust to do your own thing. Just don't mess up. This is more important than anything we've ever done. Ever.”

Profects remarks wryly. “Thanks for the vote of confidence. No pressure, right?” However, you ignore his bitching in favor of closing your eyes and slipping into a meditative trance. The world fades away, until only ambient vys and your companions seem to remain. Mortia isn't glowing nearly as brightly as she was earlier, most of her artifacts must be over with her clothes.

You start off with the foundations, raising the basic outline of a keep and a curtain wall from the sand. Chrys joins her magic with yours, and together the two of you begin to raise a wall from wet sand. You pack it tightly, using Earth magic, and generally just take it slow and steady. While you work, Mortia weaves seaweed into the sand, reinforcing it. Profectus and Darzi lend their talents to melting the outermost layer and then cooling it rapidly, forming a thick shell of glass on the sea-facing edge.

Once the curtain wall is raised high enough that the sea hopefully won't flood in with the tide, you drain any water trapped inside the curtain wall and level out the ground. From there, it's just a matter of building up the central keep. You end up including lots of swooping, impossible architecture. As you work you note that much of the wet sand of the central keep is compressing into stone, or at the very least the outer layer is. Fulvia's doing, probably.

Can we do a group battle using siege rules as well as the castle?
>>
Once the basic structure is laid out you start to work on the interior. You carve out a grand entryway, including two ornate thrones on a raised dais and a series of smaller thrones on the floor surrounding it. Statues carve themselves out of pillars supporting the roof, each one depicting one of your companions. Skull Kid holds up the roof with one gauntleted hand. Darzi supports it on the end of her spear. Chrys holds it up effortlessly with but a single finger. Mortia has erected a mighty oak to do her work for her. Profectus is sprawled out drunk, not actually doing any good. Fulvia holds up the roof with a device far more complex than it needs to be. Meanwhile a statue of yourself sits at the end of the hall, just behind the dual thrones. Instead of assisting yourself, a dozen tentacles stretch out of your cloak to do your job for you.

There isn't much room for anything else, really. Seven small rooms branch off of the main hall, roughly corresponding to each statue. They're not filled with anything, though. It simply seemed appropriate. Profectus and Darzi use fire magic to craft grand windows all along the hall, while Fulvia, Chrys, and yourself further reinforce the sand by compressing it into stone in certain spots. Finally, you carve a massive stone gate out of the front of the curtain wall, two figures flankingit on either side and beckoning newcomers inside.
>Congratulations! You're half way to being Vatis level in Earth magic!

When you finally snap open your eyes, you sit before the grandest sandcastle to ever see the light of day. Waves crash against its walls, but fail to tear it down. The architecture is all impossible spirals and delicate arches. The gate is open, allowing you a view into the grand hall. Your own image, standing proudly with chest thrust forward and surrounded by the tentacles of an interdimensional horror, stares back at you from behind two ornately carved thrones. One by one your party members join you in the waking world, admiring the work you've done together.

That is, until Profectus sees his statue

>Gonna end it here, brain is ded. Need sleep.
