The rooms in Pointsmar are strange. You're used to your workshop's wooden walls, the comfortable scent of wet earth and the soft susurrations of the village asleep around you. Here, deep below the earth, there is no soft crackle of a hearth fire to keep you warm. No creak of the building settling onto its foundations, ready to ward off the chill of the night air that you might sleep soundly.

You lie awake in your room, a cube of metal. Stark, utilitarian, functional. Your bed is tucked into a corner of the room, with a desk and paper provided on the far side. No other furniture decorates the interior. Even the lights are nested into the ceiling, lamps adorned with reflective mirrors to provide the maximum possible light with minimal energy. It's industry-chic, you suppose.

Still, it hardly feels like home. You long for the familiar sights and smells of your village once more.

When sleep finds you, it is not restful. Your dreams are filled with metallic faces and creeping, blackened rot. A soft soundtrack of pained moans fills the background of your fitful slumber. A good night's sleep, it seems, will have to wait.

When you awaken, your chamber is already filled with light. The lamp above has been lit, you assume, on a timer. The strange device on the wall, a 'chronometer' Saeri had called it, informs you that it is just after dawn on the surface.

HNNNNGNGNNGNG IT'S HAPPENIGN
>>
You swing your legs out of bed and set to work dressing and preparing yourself for the day before you. Another journey through the Mists is in order, should you wish to return to your village in a reasonable time. You leave your bindings as they were the day previous, with the exception of your Razor Wing focus. You'll need your drake's power unbound by mundane objects to ferry you through the space between worlds.

There is a brief knock at your door. From the far side, Saeri's voice is tinny and muted.

"Totemist," she calls. "Are you ready to depart?"

---

You are Osyki, journeyman Totemist and first line of defense for your village against the rabid Behemoths wandering the land. Your master, the previous Totemist, fell in a battle against a terrible Behemoth, leaving the duty of defending your settlement to you. After successfully negotiating a truce between the Iron General and the Stone Emperor, you prepare yourself to make for your village once more. You've myriad responsibilities awaiting you.

You double-check the cinches and straps holding your panoply in place, then open the door. Saeri leans comfortably against the door frame, resplendent in her blue gown. You wonder if it's a different gown every day, or if she just has some device to clean it. It's always immaculate.

"I'm ready," you say with a nod. "I've been away too long already, I think. It will be good to get home."

She nods, her eyes roaming your expression. Examining you. For what? Do you have something on your face? You raise an eyebrow, and her gaze locks to yours. "Doubtless," she says with a small smile. "Come. I'll escort you to the surface."

You trail behind her as she leads you out of the General's citadel and into the city streets. The vibrant noise of Pointsmar explodes around you as you traverse the central district, making your way out toward the marketplaces in the city's edge.

Saeri glances over her shoulder at you every so often, as if to ensure that you're still following her. She's got a look on her face that speaks of careful, deliberate composure.

You walk in silence for another two blocks before you increase your pace, striding to walk beside Saeri, rather than behind her. She looks over at you with an expression that might be startled if she weren't smiling. One of her eyebrows ticks up, questioning.

"Something on your mind?" you ask her, canting your head ever so slightly to one side. "Or do I just have something stuck to my face?"

She laughs at that, an almost melodious little chuckle. "No, free and clear," she assures you. "I'm just a little worried about your trip through the mists. Are you sure you'll make it through alright?"

You shrug your shoulders. "What's the worst that could happen? My last trip was quiet, save your unusual interruption. The things in the mist seem to respect my station as Totemist enough not to trifle with me."

You catch a flash of guilt on Saeri's face as you say so, a split-second twist at the corners of her lips. Barely there.

"What?" you ask.

"Well..." she begins hesitantly.

It takes you a moment to put two and two together, but the realization dawns on you like a bolt of light from your Razor Wing focus. You narrow your eyes shrewdly at Saeri, making a show of examining her expression. "I see," you say, nodding to yourself. "You're the reason my last trip was so smooth. I suppose you didn't want us interrupted."

She nods, glancing away from you with the faintest tinge to her cheeks.

"I hope my ego doesn't seem so fragile that I can't accept the concept of someone being more powerful than me, Saeri. How much effort did you put into clearing the path for me? You must have wanted me in Pointsmar as soon as possible."

"It's not like that," she replies a touch too quickly. "I was-- well honestly, Totemist, you saw the state I was in when we first met. I was excited. Maybe I went a little overboard in securing your route to the Wastes." She clears her throat, eyes locked firmly on the street ahead. "It's not a statement on your capability. I just wanted to ensure that you reached the city intact and devoid of any battle-born bloodlust. That's all."

"If the Mists are that dangerous, I wouldn't mind an escort the other way," you say with a shrug. "I really do have to get back as soon as possible. And, as you say, preferably intact."

She nods. "I can do that. The General will be busy preparing the city for transit, so I'm sure he can spare my nattering at him for a short while."

The two of you reach the city outskirts in fairly short order. A minecart, like the one you ousted that automaton from, is waiting for you at the edge. Saeri climbs aboard, then holds a hand out for you to do the same. Once the two of you are inside, the vehicle takes off, seemingly of its own volition.

She's quiet now, avoiding your gaze. Embarassment? Secrecy? It's difficult to get a proper read on her.

You lean against the rail of the minecart, watching the darkened tunnels as they flash past you. Every so often the cart breaches into a larger chamber, illuminated by the blood of the earth. Tusked workers toil below you in stop-motion bursts as you flicker at breathtaking speeds through the bowels of the Below.

"Saeri," you say quietly. She turns, eyes resting on your collarbone. "I know you don't mean to alarm me with your behavior, but to be entirely honest, the only reason I'm not indulging in utter paranoia right now is the fact that I survived the night in the General's citadel. It would have been much easier for him to just snuff me in my sleep."

She frowns at that, a look of distaste fleetingly displayed. You hold up a hand to stymie the inevitable apologist spiel on the General's behalf.

"Just relax a little, please. You're coiled like a Ykree. Makes me think you're about to strike."

She inhales through her nose, nodding. "Alright. My apologies, Totemist," she says. "It's difficult for me to believe that things went as well as they did. I suppose I'm still waiting for the other boot to fall, so to speak."

It's a sentiment you know well. You're half expecting your village to be aflame when you return.

You breach the surface suddenly, without warning. Momentarily you find yourself blinded by even the weak light that filters through the crimson and rust clouds overhead. As you blink the spots from your eyes, Saeri urges the cart to a stop. The mine tracks are the only feature in the wastes, as far as the eye can see.

"Would you like to ferry us?" she asks. "I can give you a ride, if you don't feel up to it."

You wave her offer away like a troublesome insect. "No, no," you say, shaking your head. "I can ferry us. I know the way now, and I'll likely have to do this unchaperoned at some point. Best to get some practice in now, aye?"

She accepts your reasoning with a clipped nod, stepping back to allow you your space. You pull the Razor Wing and the guiding totem from your bag, settling cross-legged onto the dusty ground. In lieu of chalk, you mark the prerequisite runes on the ground in the thick dust. It's unreliable, but it will have to do. You're too eager to return home to clear away the thick layer of ash.

Gripping the Razor Wing in both hands, you speak.

"Mists beyond mortal ken, I entreat you. Enshroud me. Press me beyond the veil, and allow me entrance into the valley of the night. In the name of the Totemist's Pact, I invoke my right as bridge to the World Without."

The world around you fades, the color slowly draining away. The motes of dust in the air whirl and dance in dizzying spirals as you chant the words of your pact. Beside you, Saeri silently mouths a chant of her own.

"Open the way, that I might walk it. Unshroud the path, that I might entreat with those beyond the material on their own terms. In the name of Osyki, I part the veil."

A storm of ash rushes past you, filling the air with choking dust. You stand as the burning particles give way to clammy silver mist, the transition undetectable save for the shift in temperature. The Drake uncoils from the mists, Saeri already mounted astride its serpentine body. It regards you silently.

"Home." It's as much a wish as it is a command. Your drake takes to the skies with a flex of its wings, and you plunge into the shifting silver abyss.

It is nigh impossible to gauge the passage of time in the rift between worlds. Saeri keeps her eyes glued to the horizon as you drift, the gauntlet that wraps her hand humming every so often with brilliant emerald energies. You keep your attention pointed forward-- landmarks are few and far between in this gray world, and you'll not embarrass yourself by getting lost and wasting time. The first leg of the journey is, mercifully, uneventful. Whether that's due to Saeri's influence or simple luck is anyone's guess.

You disregard all notions of social niceties and distractions. You've been diplomacizing, socializing, and generally talking your damned head off for the better part of the last two days. You are sick to death of it. You keep your eyes peeled and your ears perked, and leave Saeri to her own devices.

For all the wonders that you've seen, the most wondrous sight of all will be your own bed, you think.

You keep a sharp eye on the bulges and warps in the bubbling clouds of gray. You half-expect another beam of searing emerald to boil away the cloud cover at every odd nodule in the roiling gray. The fact that the source of that wytchfire is seated behind you is only a small comfort.

Your Drake winds its way through the gray mists without challenge. Whatever magic Saeri is working behind you seems to serve as a marvelously effective ward. She is pale in the face, but her expression is placid. The gem in her gauntlet revolves and burns like a miniature sun.

"Are you alright back there?"

She nods, but doesn't look at you. Seems she's gotten the message too.

Home, first.

"We are fast approaching the border of the Emperor's Realm, Totemist," the Drake says. "I expect he will wish to reward you for your service."

"I'll deal with him later," you sigh. "He's not going anywhere."

Your Drake nods, turning to face front again. Through the faintest gaps in the mist, you can see sunlight.

The mists part was your Drake screams downward out of the sky, its cries echoing across the mountain peaks. You can see tiny dots scurry below in the village streets, sprinting as the roaring serpent winds a lazy spiral downward toward the village. You are, as always, the absolute master of making an entrance. Behind you, you hear Saeri let out a soft sigh of relief. The emerald light wanes as Saeri allows her enchantments to fade. You catch a glimpse of verdant wards flickering out of existence as the Drake makes sloping revolutions toward the earth.

When you land, the massive form of the shimmering Drake fades to a simple stone wing in your hands once more. The sight of Grisoch in all its humble glory is nearly enough to bring a tear to your eye-- though the streets are somewhat empty, even for the village outskirts. Of course, you did just fall to earth on the back of a screaming golden dragon, which means--

With a cry of fury, Quinn erupts from the cover of the village outskirts, brandishing a long club of bone topped with a raptor's skull. He moves to swing the club, the empty sockets of the skull burning with fell light when he catches sight of you. There's a stumble in his step as he clumsily arrests his momentum, and he ends up lamely shuffling to stand in front of you instead.

"Osyki?" He asks, confused. "That you?"

"Who else?" you ask, flashing him a grin.

He lets out a little laugh of elation, putting an arm around your shoulder. "About time, my friend," he says, tugging you toward the village. "Things have been busy, very busy while you've been away. I imagine you'll want to speak to the elders, and the representative from Eluna. Oh, of course, and the wood spirit, she's been asking after you when you return. Then there's Elana and of course, Aurora's been--"

"Quinn!" you say, putting up a hand to arrest the veritable tidal wave of information. "One thing at a time, please! At least let me sit down first."

He blinks, then grins again. "Right, sorry. Sorry. Come on then."

Saeri gives a quiet cough, and all at once your cotemist seems to take note of her. He does a double-take as he catches sight of her, blinking rapidly.

Quinn gives Saeri a deep bow of his own, clearly somewhat flustered.

"Saeri, this is Quinn, a fellow Totemist and guardian of this village."

"A pleasure," she says with an amused twinkle in her eye. "Osyki, shall I wait for you? Or would you rather I be on my way?"

You shake your head, beckoning for her with one hand. "Don't be absurd, you say with a shrug. "You took the time to show me your home. It's only fair that I do the same for you."

She smiles dazzlingly at that, reaching out to accept your hand. You valiantly ignore the accusatory, incredulous look that Quinn shoots you over her shoulder, turning to step into town. Saeri falls into step on one side of you, with Quinn on the other. Together, the three of you head toward the raising house.

Gods, but it is good to be home.

The people of the village give you smiles and fond waves as you pass them by, often turning to watch the three of you make your way down the street. You're hardly inconspicuous, after all. After the bowyer's apprentice and the carpenter's boy lapse into chuckles as you pass, Quinn turns to Saeri. She catches his gaze, glancing down at her shimmering blue dress.

"I suppose I do stick out a bit, don't I?" she says with a small sigh. "I could play it down a bit, if you think that would help."

As she says so, you arrive at the door to the raising house. Inside, you can hear the raucous sounds of children at play.

You shrug as you palm the latch to the Raising House door. "Just be yourself," you say confidently. "Who cares? You're an outsider. People expect you to be radiant and outlandish. I'd say you fit the ideal to the letter."

Saeri puts a hand to her cheek, blushing slightly. Seems you've made her happy, though you're not sure why. "Alright, Osyki," she says with a nod. "So what is this place?"

"The most dangerous building in the entire village," you say with a solemn nod. When Saeri raises an eyebrow, you throw open the door. There is a moment of silence as the heads of the children within snap around. The explosion of noise that follows is nigh deafening-- even in Vestus Sonitus, you fear for the structural integrity of your spine as Aurora dives through the doorway, slamming into you with all the force of a rampaging behemoth. Saeri lets out a little gasp of surprise as you tumble off of your feet, rolling entangled in a ball of blond and red.

"Osy!" The cry echoes up and down the street. From your position on the ground, you can see Quinn chuckling as he explains to Saeri. Within the building, an up-side down Matron Liska shakes her head at you with exasperation writ large across her face.

"Hey, Rora," you say with a wide smile. You pat her head soothingly. "I missed you, too."

As your sister nuzzles into the unyielding surface of your chestplate you clamber to your feet. "Rora," you say, prying her from you for a moment, "This is Saeri. Saeri, this is my younger sister, Aurora."

Saeri gives Aurora another exaggerated bow, smiling wide. Aurora gasps audibly as she catches sight of Saeri, her eyes round as saucers. The two stare silently at one another for a moment.

"Osyki, I wanna be her when I grow up."

"I would be quite happy if you did, Rora. For one thing, you'd be a lot calmer. In the past two days she's only playfully attacked me once, that's a lot better than your minimum. Seriously, though, she's a pretty impressive lady, you could do a lot worse than to be like her."

You set Aurora on the ground as you manage to fully right yourself. She shyly scampers closer to Saeri, looking up at her in utter awe. Your companion, for her part, does her best to smile graciously and indulge Aurora's curiosity. It's no wonder Rora is so enamored with Saeri. Blonde hair, blue eyes-- the woman could be an older version of Aurora, given a few major differences in bone structure and skin color.

With Aurora conveniently distracted, you turn to Quinn. "Where's Terra?"

"Safe in the workshop," he replies. "When I saw that Drake coming down from the mountains I gave her one of the thick books on your desk and told her you'd teach her a new secret about spirits for every page she got through before I got back."

You run a hand through your hair. "Let's hope she's not as precocious as she seems, or I'm never leaving the workshop again."

He shrugs. "I panicked. Worse comes to worse, you can always start making things up. Or, hey, do some research yourself, Mr. Spiritual Encyclopedia."

The two of you share a quiet chuckle as Saeri shows Aurora the gauntlet that wraps her hand, the gem inset in its back glowing with soft cerulean radiance.

"I'm going to head back. I was in the middle of some totems for the miners when you showed up."

"Great," you say, nodding in agreement. "I'll be back after I show Saeri around some. Maybe stop in to visit Elana."

Quinn looks at you dubiously. "You sure about that?" He glances meaningfully at Saeri.

Show Saeri around some more, don't try to avoid Elena because it will look like we're trying to hide something we're ashamed of. Not a good image to present to either of them. If the issue comes up, just remain calm and explain that Saeri is an ambassador of her people and we're showing her the respect due to a woman in her position. Elena doesn't have anything to worry about. Well, maybe people getting her confused with our new trade partners. Being named Elena when you're dealing with a kingdom named Eluna must be all sorts of annoying.

You shrug airily, casting your gaze toward the heavens. The sunshine feels incredible after days beneath the earth and smog. "Not at all. I'm living life on the edge, my friend. But better I introduce her to Elana myself than shuttle her around in secret like some sort of illicit contraband, aye?"

Quinn nods, a hand to his chin. "True enough, Osyki. When did you get so wise to the way of women?"

You actually snort at that. "Please. You know the luck I've had in the past with girls. Let's not talk about the Harvest festival a few years back."

Quinn winces. "I heard about that. You've really not been into the paperbinding hut since?"

You shake your head. "Don't even go -near- it. She's probably forgotten about it by now, but..."

The less said about that embarrassing memory, the better. Suffice to say it involved an excess of alcohol, a loose robe tie, and an overripe gourd.

You cough into your hand, diverting the conversation before either of you ruminate on that any further. "See you back at the workshop?"

You nod. "I'll be back before dark."

With a wave, Quinn departs. As he does, Saeri approaches you with Aurora perched on her shoulders.

"So, where to?" she asks, smiling.

You wave Saeri along the road with you. As you walk, Aurora rests her chin atop Saeri's golden locks. She looks utterly content.

"Let me introduce you to Elana," you say as you proceed. "She's the apprentice to the village healer, and frankly the only reason I'm still up and around after the reckless fights I seem to constantly throw myself into."

Saeri nods, careful not to jostle Aurora too indiscriminately. "She sounds like an excellent friend to have. I had to become self-sufficient in that sort of technique in my travels. I've never had someone to take care of me."

Aurora lets out a sad noise from atop Saeri's shoulders. "You should stay, then! Osy will take care of you. He keeps us all safe."

She turns her eyes upward, smiling. There's that tinge of regret in her eyes still, though. "I wish that I could, little one. But I have important work to do back in my home."

You nod to Aurora. "Saeri keeps her home safe, just like I do."

Aurora puts a hand to her chin. "So she's a 'Temist, like you?"

"Something like that," Saeri affirms.

You reach the Healer's Hut in short order. A few raps at the door quickly produce Elana, who looks... not stunned, exactly, but certainly surprised by the three of you standing in her doorway. She smiles at you, then at Saeri and Aurora in turn.

"Osyki," she says, greeting you with a warm hug. "Welcome back."

Speaking of which, let me introduce you to Saeri, an emissary of the city of Pointsmar and agent of the Iron General. Saeri, this is Elana, one of my dearest friends and likely the main reason I haven't bled to death yet."

"It's good to be back! I have so much to tell, so many things that I never would have imagined could exist. Though the accommodation left a lot to be desired. Something about sleeping in a metal box doesn't sit well with me.

Ah, right, this is Saeri, a friend I met while crossing the mountains. Can we come in, maybe grab a bit and share some stories? I'll be glad to hear how you've been doing in my absence.
>>
You return the embrace. As Elana buries her head in your shoulder, you're greeted by the smells of mint and freshly baked goods. She's been busy while you were away. The patients who lined the beds suffering from the seasonal fever have all disappeared. The hut is, for once, empty of patients.

"Good to be back," you say as you pull away from her. "I gather you all have been as busy as I have. At least, that's how Quinn made it sound. May we come in?"

She nods, stepping aside to allow you entrance. As Saeri sweeps into the hut, you gesture to her. "This is Saeri, a friend I met across the mountains. She's an emissary for a settlement on the far edge of the range."

"For now," Saeri reminds you. With Aurora on her shoulders she can't bow, so she settles for a small curtsy to Elana instead. "Pleasure to meet you, miss...?"

"Elana," she says. "Apprentice healer for the village."

"Like as not, the only reason I'm still breathing," you chime in. She smiles wider at that.

"I have been a bit less busy since he left," she says to Saeri conspiratorially. "Without constant lacerations and broken limbs to treat, I actually have spare time on my hands. It's new and exciting."

Saeri smirks. "He is a bit of a handful. Couldn't show him around the city without him darting off to do battle with some enormous underground monstrosity."

Elana lets out a long-suffering sigh. "If it's not that, it's a Bone Warden or some ancient evil."

They both turn, looking at you a touch judgementally. This situation is rapidly spiraling out of control.

Saeri nods. "True. I suppose that gets you a few points."

Elana shakes her head. "Don't encourage him. His ego can only take so much attention before it pops like an overripe gourd. Right, Osyki?"

You cough into your hand, looking anywhere but Elana's growing, teasing grin. Mumbling something inaudible glance out the window. The two of them lapse into giggles, which you believe means that you're off the hook, for the moment.

"So, the village healer, eh? Maybe you and I could swap secrets. I know a great mushroom salve to stave off rot."

"Apprentice," Elana corrects her, "But that'd be great."

You glance surreptitiously toward the exit as the girls begin to talk shop. Aurora sits nearby, not really understanding, but clearly enjoying being included as she munches on a handful of amynicia.

"I'll be back in a little while, you two," you say as you reach for the door. "I need to get an update from Quinn and check in with the Elders. Elana, I leave our guest in your capable hands."

She puts a hand on her hip. "Tch. Doing your job as ambassador for you, am I? Alright, off you go. I'll bring her by the workshop when we're through."

You nod, escaping before they can flank you with further piercing stares. The door clicks shut behind you, and you suck in a deep breath before you take off down the street.

You open the workshop door to find Quinn examining a solid, blocky totem of stone and metal wire. He proffers it to you.

Ooh, these are all very tempting. But I think I'm going to go with
> Totems to reduce injuries in the workplace.
> Totems to promote crop growth.
These are going to be important to us in the near future. Our access to above ground crops (side note: Just realized that the General's life is basically Dwarf Fortress. Everything has fallen into context now) will be a luxury food to trade to Pointsmar, so increased yield will help a lot. And reducing injuries in the workplace is always a good idea, and would help a lot if we import any craft techniques from our new trade partners. The other things are good, but we can work on them later. Tamed beasts are a neat idea but difficult to implement even with magic, the walls are already reinforced by a bunch of different totems, and increased mining speed won't be necessary for a while given our small population.

You hadn't even considered the latter as a viable totem for the village until now. Quinn explains that he's worked with the farmers to outfit the fields with the Blood charms in even intervals, and the Slayers should receive their first batch of cages from the carpenter's workshop within the month.

"Between that and keeping Terra busy, I haven't had time for a lot else. The ambassador from Eluna is staying with the Elders right now. Since you're home, you ought to go and meet him. Terra's been working on a number of minor, personal charms as training to get her spiritual reserves used to totemcraft. Oh, and Boa's been making regular trips up the river, mingling with the townsfolk. Results are mixed, thus far. A lot of folk like her, but some people just don't trust spirits. Especially not shapely, topless water spirits."

You shrug, cracking a smile at the thought of the Matrons giving Boand a withering stare. "They'll either get used to her or seal off the water grate at the edge of the village, I suppose. We'll see which comes first. How have the talks with the Elunan ambassador gone so far?"

Quinn scratches his head. "You know I don't have the patience for politics, Osyki. He hasn't stormed off in a huff yet, and Mayhew hasn't tried to put a spear through him, so all in all, I assume it's going well enough. He's here to talk about the road, so a lot of the conversation hinges on your input. Though, now that I think of it, they might be out touring the village right now. Haine said something to that effect while they were bringing the guy into town. I think he was expecting a bigger settlement. Whatever you did when you met them must have impressed them."

As Quinn explains to you, you begin unbinding the various Foci strapped to your person. Quinn leaves off mid-sentence, watching you with something between awe and frustration. You catch his eye, one eyebrow raised.

"Whatever Ayren did to you made you a monster, you know that? Binding my one Focus makes me feel like I've been running laps of the village, and you're over there walking around with an army of spirits in every spare scrap of clothing without breaking a sweat."

You shrug, pulling the Stalker Pelt from your sword. Brief images of Ayren's training come back to you. Meditation on mountain peaks, consuming foul, bitter tinctures, sparring three times a day with a man twice your size--you shake your head. "It was a long process," you say with a shrug. "And I still feel underequipped some days."

Quinn just snorts.

[You have, at this point, stopped unbinding your boots when you release the rest of your Foci. Cloudwalker's Stride makes ordinary boots feels clumsy and leaden.]

You put your hand to the amber charm at your throat, calling Amal into being. The rotating prism refracts pleased blue-green light through its interior as it fades into solid reality.

"Amal, I'd like you to run ahead to the Elders and request an audience with them and our guest. If they agree, please return to me and let me know where the are."

"Of course," he says, phasing through the wall in a cloud of light and courtesy.

"You just got back. Are you sure you want to go negotiating again without putting your feet up for a while?" Quinn asks, patting the workbench next to him. "You're allowed to take breaks."

"I know. I'll take a break after this," you tell him, shuffling your usual trio of binds into their spots. Though Vestus Sonitus is obviously much lighter than it should be, it's nice to have little more than your shirt and the weight of Nocturne's Embrace on your shoulders. You feel much less constricted.

Quinn shakes his head, turning back to his book.

Leaving him with instructions to check in on Terra every so often, you head out into the village. The day is slowly but surely growing wan as the sun creeps inexorably toward the horizon. Faint rays of gold and red flash over the tops of houses and workshops around you, sending shadows dancing across the streets. You stick as best you can to the lit portions of the road, but every now and then a villager will start as you emerge into visibility from a shadow just in front of them.

Amal returns to you within a few minutes, informing you that the elders and the envoy are settling in for an early meal, if you'd like to join them.

>>
>>34991824
We shouldn't try and keep her a secret either.
>>
You send Amal off with a message to expect you within the hour before making for the healer's hut. The shadows on the streets grow longer as you make your way down the lane. At the very least, you ought to let Saeri know of your obligation and see Aurora back at the Raising House in time for dinner before you settle in for some potentially lengthy negotiations. Just the thought makes your neck ache and your skull pulse angrily. You half-wish something would assault the village, so talking could be put by the wayside without guilt for once.

But you are, first and foremost, a negotiator. This is your job. The lightning kicks are a side-effect of failure at that job.

The lamps within the Healer's hut shine cheery light into the street as you approach. You knock twice, then let yourself in. Elana and Saeri are seated, using a bed as a table to mix various herbs and mushrooms while they talk. They both wear easy smiles, and the atmosphere is welcoming. And to think, you were worried. Aurora perks up as you enter, scooting off of Saeri's lap to embrace your leg.

"Welcome back, Osyki," Saeri says with a small wave. "Finished with your work?"

You shake your head, smiling ruefully. "Not nearly. I stopped in to tell you that I've a dinner obligation with the elders and an ambassador, now. I'll likely be late."

Saeri's face falls a little at that, and she props a hand under her chin. "That's-- hmm. Well, I suppose I ought to be on my way, then. No sense wandering about."

"I could put you up for the night, if you're not in a hurry to leave," Elana offers. "The beds here aren't much, but they're clean and free, for the moment. Once Osyki finishes schmoozing the elders, we could catch up with him. Tonight or tomorrow."

"You did expend quite a bit of energy warding the way for us on our departure," you interject. Saeri's gaze locks to you, one eyebrow slowly rising on her face. "Do you have the reserves to make a second trip so soon? It might be smarter to rest here for the night, then make the journey tomorrow when you've recovered somewhat."

She nods along slowly, dropping her hand from her chin to rest on one hip. "I suppose that's good thinking. I'd be pleased to indulge in your hospitality, Elana." Her gaze lingers on you for a moment before sliding to the girl across the bed from her. Elana nods, looking pleased at the thought. She must not socialize much, you realize suddenly. The Healer keeps her busy all through the day, and she heads to sleep early to awaken before dawn for her herb-picking routes through the forest. Saeri must be a breath of fresh air in an otherwise grueling routine.

"Where is your Mistress?" you ask.

"Tending to the Blacksmith. There was some sort of accident in the forge. She should be back before long," Elana replies.

You makes arrangements with Saeri and Elana-- if your dinner ends at a reasonable hour, you'll send Amal to fetch them. Otherwise, you'll catch up with them tomorrow. Saeri promises to see Aurora back to the raising house in short order, and miraculously Aurora agrees with her without so much as a pout.

"See you soon, Totemist," she says, waving as you make your exit.

The sun has begun to set as you make your way down the main thoroughfare once more. You take care to weave through the villagers as Nocturne's Embrace shrouds you from mortal sight. In short order, you are ascending the steps to the Elders' meeting house.

You'll conduct yourself...

Being a nice and pleasant person is what Osyki is best at. Let's play to our strengths. We can have a little mystique, though. If asked why we weren't in the village we can say we were traveling through the spirit realm to negotiate treaties between local earth spirits, for instance. Completely true, and makes us sound impressive.

You knock twice at the door, positioning yourself just so. As the door swings open, the light from within seems to melt the shadows around you until only you remain on the doorstep, wisps of darkness still clinging to your cloak. You hope it's as impressive to those inside as it was in your mind's eye. You're not exact on how the abilities of Nocturne's Embrace appear to others.

Elder Haine beckons you in, smiling warmly. Inside, Illstya and Mayhew are seated along one side of the table. The former gives you a smile as well, raising a hand in welcome. Mayhew ignores you for the moment, focusing on the leg of lamb in front of him.

Seated with his back to the door is a broadly built man. His hair is sandy blond, and as he turns to look at you, you see his face is adorned with a truly impressive mustache, waxed to a fine curl at either tip. He gives you a respectful nod as you make your way to the table. Haine gestures you to a seat at the head. It's a small honor that might go unnoticed to an outsider, but it's enough to give you pause. Your return must have been anticipated warmly.

"Welcome, Totemist," Haine says as you seat yourself beside him and the ambassador. "Allow me to introduce Corporal Tiber Rime, of Eluna."

"Eluneia," the Corporal corrects. His accent is airy and, for a moment, difficult to track. Small wonder your fellow villagers have issues with the pronunciation of his home. That many vowels in rapid succession make for oral gymnastics. He extends a hand to you, and shake it. "A pleasure to meet you, Totemist."

If I understand correctly, our name-binding ritual won't let him share the knowledge of our name unless we want him to, so it should be safe. And it's the polite thing to do.
>>

Eh, Osyki might be fine?

Also maybe just in general ask how Grisoch has faired in our absence, asking both the Corporal's impression as well as the Elders?

Actually, maybe we should stick to titles.

The Iron General seemed to want to.

Only things that should matter to a Totemist.
Trade are more of the Elders jobs, we're just here to give them more power/smooth out any small details

In our capacity as an ambassador though (remember we made first contact with the people), it's a polite thing to give our name and shows a small measure of trust.
Additionally, the village might appear weak if it seems like we're the only thing protecting it and we leave often to pursue other responsibilities.
>>
>>34992941
I think we might have already given out name in the past, so doing it again couldn't hurt.

And ask the Elders about our absence I suppose, since the Corporal probably already told the Elders about Eluneia.
>>
"Likewise," you say as the Corporal all but shakes your arm off of your body. The man's stocky build belies an armful of powerful musculature. You'll introduce yourself properly to the man once he's earned a modicum of trust. Right now, he's an unknown quantity, precisely the sort of thing your pact of secrecy is meant to safeguard you from until you can gather more information. "I hope that you've found your stay in our village enjoyable, sir," you say, pulling your plate of lamb and root vegetables toward you. For the moment, you ignore the mug of dark brown by your place setting. Have to keep the mind sharp, after all. "We're a humble settlement, but hospitality is very important to us."

The Eluneian man nods, dabbing at the corners of his mouth with a cloth from his breast pocket. "It has an undeniable rustic charm," he says with a small grin. "A far cry from the hustle and bustle of my home or the controlled chaos of the forward camps. I daresay my time here has been almost relaxing. Your people have shown me kindness in allowing me to wait in such amicable conditions for your return."

You smile at the man before turning to Elder Haine. "How have things been in my absence? No complications, I hope?"

Haine shakes his head. "No trouble at all. The defenses you've erected seem to be keeping the vast majority of troubles at bay, and what those cannot ward, our men can fend off handily. I've been enjoying an afternoon walk along the river. Your ally in the water is very talkative."

You suppress the urge to grin. Haine would enjoy Boa's company.

"The infrastructure of your village is impressive for such a remote settlement, Totemist," The Corporal interjects. "Given an open line of communication and transit between our homes, I could easily see your home blossoming into a much larger town."

The road would be a bitch to travell if it pass near the Basilik's nest

we know our own infrastructure, and we can ask about Eluneia later. Right now is business time.

[[I'm starting to nod off, so we'll call the quest here for now. Next week will pick up with questions and negotiations for a road to Eluneia. More likely than not, I'll be able to run an extra bonus session on Monday to make up for the fact that this way a shorter thread than usual.

Thanks for playing, as always, and have a good night.]]

>>
>>34993592
Yes. We've got substantially more craftspeople in more variety than you'd expect from a town this size, a reasonably advanced public education system, several already dug mineshafts, a millpond waiting for a mill to be built, and a town absolutely saturated in totems. The only things holding Grissoch back are a lack of manpower and someone to trade with.
>>

Night, thanks for running

Thanks for running, it's good to be home.

Though Saeri's suspicious behavior still makes me uneasy, especially since we haven't noticed her blushing when she's not looking us in the eye.
>>
>>34993665
Did we ever get an explanation for why that is?
