Your workers have finished resealing the hive and repairing the damage and have returned to their regular duties throughout the hive. The damage has caused a number of aggravating delays in your construction efforts, and even worse, you now have a rather discomforting feeling of paranoia and have been contemplating altering the entire layout of your tunnels, which would cause even more delays. The continuous efforts of the Union to firmly place themselves into your business are becoming more and more annoying.

You watch as your guests sit in their cells. The common area is much less crowded now that the officers have been isolated, and you think you can detect a stark drop in morale among them. The twins are buried deep within the bowls of a half disassembled regeneration tank as they attempt to explain its workings to an attentive worker, tossing bits and pieces to the side as they do so. You can still sense the faint echo of thought from Elizabeth as she sits in her own cell. She is staring intently at the floor, carefully running her hands along the membrane of the hive wall as she attempts to deduce its composition and design.

Your drones deep within the strange ruins of Raligha continue to look over the starmap, which remains an enigma to you. The map itself goes into extreme detail, but the information is indecipherable for the moment, its language a strange string of odd symbols and tiny carvings.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

Finished Research
>Panic gas
This potent gas directly triggers a sense of overwhelming danger and dread in the subject to create a mind numbing desire to flee the area as quickly as possible. While your current research shows that it should be quite effective against a variety of life forms, you are unsure exactly how they would respond without first hand field testing. Results may vary widely depending on the targets state of mind, psychology, or training.

>Hallucinogenic spores
This fungus is similar in nature to the deadly sea spores, but is far less lethal. While there may be some danger in overdose, the spores seem to cause a variety of vivid hallucinations from visions of nightmarish horrors to perceived visions of the future and everything in between. The spores are short lived, but are small enough to be invisible to the vision of most creatures, or appear as little more than dust.

>Paralytic barb
The powerful toxin of this flower is fired from a small barb like a dart gun. While the barb itself is useless against even basic protection, the toxin can be loaded into a projectile or hypodermic blade with ease. The toxin itself is fast acting and long lasting, knocking out the victim long enough for the plant to digest the prey, or in the case of your hive, long enough to retrieve and capture safely. The toxin is a venom, and must be injected directly into the blood stream for it to have any effect.

I think we should focus on expanding our industry, then constructing a large fleet effectively all at once. Basically sink all of our nuetrients and metal into more algae farms and mines this turn.

Oh, and what R&D would we need to make a Cerebrate to our overmind? A duchess if you will.

"Grid ten clear."
"Hey, shh, you hear that?"
Your drones pick up the radio of a small foot patrol nearby. There is a long pause.
"No, no I don't"
"Yea... something's up. This place just got real quiet real fast. Something's up."
"Local predator, maybe?"
"Maybe... Just keep an eye open. Let's keep moving."

Actually it takes longer than that because of diminishing returns.

What diminishing return?
We are running out of space to set up farms now?

the only upkeep for the farm is the 1 worker we spawn to man it?
So what is decreasing our return

Speaking of sneaky shit I have a possible drone design here.

Special Operations Warrior
Olfactory: Basic
Acoustic: Basic
Radio: Basic 1N
Psionic: Basic
Mandibles: Combat 1N
Blade: Combat 1N
Arms: Strength 1N
Legs: Sprint 1N
Wings: Moderate 2N
Utility: Explosive Acid Glands 1N
Carapace: Combat 3N10M
Mimetic Skin 2N
Size: Medium

Cost: 13N10M
Upkeep: 7N

Its basically a Warrior that can keep up with a Shocktrooper, has some slight stealth abilities and can use its acid glands to remove any trace of its body in case of shit getting fucked. You put 5-10 of these in a squad with one Shocktrooper as their commander.
I figured these would be useful in operations where we don't want to leave any incriminating evidence behind and their cheaper than a full squad of shocktroopers. Although I admit we're probably only going to use them in rare situations.
>>
>>35028293
>but yeah 10 workers can make 1 farm a day

Neither of you seem to have been paying attention at all. The farm construction is already underway, and takes multiple days, we are literally already doing that shit. Number of farms and quantity of nutrients stored are the current bottleneck.

It's happening already as fast as it possibly can.

And because laying drones requires upfront laying costs, we will need to *not* start wasting the upkeep immediately, we have to let the nest egg grow, in order to be able to lay large numbers of starships. The corvette alone is 400N upfront costs each. At the current resource reserves, you can barely lay 12 of them. And then you won't be able to lay any more at all, unless you wait days to build up more excess net nutrients income to add to the reserves.

>>35028235
And independent minds are completely unnecessary, the queen has absolutely no mechanic that limits her capacity for control with enough psionic relays. If you're completely desperate for more NPCs to boss around, you have Quantum Thinkers.
>>
>>35028468

I'm down for keeping it on the books. Do they need the radio sensing if they're going to be stationed with Shock Troopers though?

I don't know about any diminishing returns. But the claim that you can build a farm with 10 drones in a day is wrong. That has never happened. Farms have always taken multiple days to build no matter how many drones are on the job.

In fact right now, we are building 120 farms, and have 1200 workers for the job, and they're still not done yet, after several days of work. I forget how many.

Simply fortifying the walls won't stop this from happening. We base defenses for counterattacking.
>>
>>35028532
>Alter the tunnels

Your spare workers start work at once. The process is slow, but you will soon weave an even more labyrinthine network beneath the surface. You briefly contemplate moving yourself to a new location entirely, or even creating a decoy to take up residence in your throne room.

>Move yourself to a new location (where)
>Create a decoy to take your place
>Neither

I should also mention that the farms don't so much as have diminishing returns as have a hard cap on the number of drones that can work in the same space at once. If you have a thousand workers and you start making a farm, only a small number can squeeze into the work area at the same time, so you end up with a boost in speed going from one to five, but not when going from one hundred to five hundred.

Forget reinforcing the walls.

Adapt the cloaking technology to hide the walls from radar and sonar, maybe. Make it appear as just more ground and dirt. Although I suppose that would be costly too.

Still, at least the Hel's Angel should have its cloaking devices re attached and used to make it invisible to radar and sonar. That 'hard contact' was troubling.

No we really do need some more thinking minions to two reasons:
1. We're a massive logistical bottleneck, due to us being the only person making new workers, which must be physically transported to wherever we need them. This somehow hasn't bitten us on the ass yet, but the instant we expand beyond the system it will.
2. We are a single point of failure, the queen dies, the host is leaderless

previously stated possible advantages to a base burrowed under the rock in the ocean

more access to interesting samples (most of earths life if underwater it should be the same here),
less concerned about the planets / hot cold cycle,
easier to hide from outsiders,
if someone does come to remove us i'd think we'd get a bit of a defensive advantage (we would be suited to the environment they would not be, even more so if we are very deep),
would also give us options for setting up bases on other planets with oceans.

Having 'a' base under the ocean, fine. Having the queen there, pfah.

>>
>>35029364

How are they going to locate it? It's under and ocean and then some, and any thermal signatures will be very effectively masked.
>>
>>35029085
Not necessarily. The hive could be operated by a thinker who could run the civilization until a related Queen was born or found. All the queen would have to do is designate a thinker to preform the actions and tell the others to listen to him. I'd recommend giving him the orders to have a new queen be born if we die and feed all of the information we've gathered to her so she can continue knowing what we know.
>>
how about we find an underwater mountain range?
>>
>>35029363

Better to be on a different planet entirely really
>>
>>35029277
I assume it would be accessible via collapsible tunnel, which could be flooded and sealed in an emergency, while access to the ocean itself could be through moon pool access.
The desert would require extensive labor to build, with a need for radiator vents to avoid overheating. It would be very difficult to find via thermal imaging due to the radiant heat of the region, and even more difficult to approach on foot.

The same logic goes for mountain bases. Replace 'water' with 'rock', which is even denser.

The desert is the worst choice for multiple reasons. Not least is the much less cloud cover obscuring it from orbit.
>>
if we do move can we make sure to leave a decoy queen at our old location, ant pretend its were we are headquartered at?

The reason it is harder to detect underwater than under a mountain is partly because water is less dense and scatters heat.

>"Yea... something's up. This place just got real quiet real fast. Something's up."

Right, Raligha.

I was pondering this.

I'm worried they'll find the temple before they leave. And the best way to get them to leave is to give them a dose of First Contact with local Class 0 sapient life.

Unfortunately we don't know the local drum language so we can't incite them to attack the invader bipeds.

So I'm not sure what to even attempt to do here, that won't risk exposing the presence of non-radial-symmetric (and therefore obviously non native) drones to the humans.

I mean the narration said they seemed to be winding down their search before, but they're still here. It's a gamble.

>>35029656
Your shuttle cruises over the landscape in a regular pattern, slowly plotting out the areas you have yet to scout in much detail. It may take some time for it to find a proper location.

"This is team six, I think we found something. Bit of charred ash and a small ditch. Looks like a foxhole."
"Bit of ash and a hole? That isn't a very solid lead."
"It's a lot more than we had a minute ago. Hold on... looks like some scratch marks on the trees. I think it leads off this way."
"Yea, and into some giant rotary bear's chop shop. These things could shit napalm for all we know. Let's head back, we're done with this sector."
"Let's just look at this real quick first."
You hear the response from the lead ship in orbit.
"We're packing up already, be quick about it and don't spend more than an hour. It's looking like a standard Unity raid so far."
>>
>>35030026
The whole point of Raligha drones is maintaining secrecy and checking out the temple. More forces aren't gonna help hiding in the temple.

>>35030030
Well shit. Time to triangulate where exactly those transmissions were coming from(I'm guessing the trail leads to the temple cave), and maybe rouse up the natives to distract them.

Time to become insect gods.
>>
>>35029636
Just wanted to mention, but in addition to that being remarkably meta of you, creating more queens/duchesses/whatever does actually help keep Queeny alive, because making her less essential to the hive's survivial makes her less of a target.
>>35029954
This seems like an argument in favor of making a minion smarter than a quantum thinker.
>>
>>35030196

No, we're still just as essential. Now there's just another hive somewhere else that's subservient to a different queen.
>>
>>35029954
Set quantum thinker to run shit if queen dies and make new queen. Then when new queen finished she takes over. Quantum Thinkers aren't the ideal for running, but would keep the civilization alive until the optimum alternative becomes available. That's all I was saying.

>>35030030
If we make our new throne room be set up to mimic space (no gravity), then can we escape FTW with a pod from it?
>>
>>35030235
From the perspective of our enemies, that would be an academic difference. There would still be buggs trying to kill them with basically no disruption in command.
>>
>>35030196
You know what else is meta?

Assuming you're going to get an extra life by changing perspective to an NPC.

>>35030030
Panic.

That ash is from the missile they launched at us. They're following the chase sequence we had with Malek and his buddy.

>>
>>35030316
>Assuming you're going to get an extra life by changing perspective to an NPC.
Yeah, see I'm not assuming that.
>>
>>35030030
Your orbiting pod swivels its sensors and gazes downward to the planet. You already have a decent idea of where they are, but the jungle is too dense to get a fix on the scouts.

"Hold on, looks like dried blood. More scratch marks, and look at this, it's like a giant barb of some kind. It's organic."

You hear the lead ship respond again, " Roger. Doesn't sound consistent with Unity weapons tech. Local predator attack isn't far fetched of an idea. We have been here for days now, if someone was still there they would have seen the air patrols."
"Requesting permission to follow the trail?"
There is a short pause. "Granted, but be quick about it."

Your drones are still in the map chamber of the ruins, and you contemplate what to do.

This is true. Which was why some people suggested making Cerberate equivelents. Really the analogy isn't that hard to understand. They're stratigic commanders who can function as lesser versions of a queen, providing alternative viewpoints while still being subservient, and serving as potential backup, as although they are not queens themselves, they can create new queens if the original dies. Sure, that last bit might not help the players much, but I can't really understand why the Queen would make no contingency's for her death.

My idea is we split our troopers. Some go to find the locals and rile them up. Approach them and skitter side to side maybe, I dunno they seem pretty excited about us on their own. The goal is to get them drumming.

The others go to find the enemy scouts but don't do anything unless they don't break off their approach. Even then, rustle bushes angrily or something rather than attack, if at all possible.

Your drones quickly make their way back to the small camp on the far side of the mountain where you first found the native creatures. You can hear the sound of drumming as your reach the mouth of the cave.

They appear to have been quite busy. A large collection of branches and vines has been assembled into a massive sculpture in the center of the village. A large, six limbed winged figure. A netting of wicker covers the eyes and blooming vines and lilies hang from the frame of the wings like a great cape. At the base of the effigy is a collection of items. Tightly woven wreaths, small carved totems, freshly fashioned tools and various meals set on small plates of smoothed stones.

A blast of air from the hollow trees echoes through the village with a deep bellow and the creatures scatter to the edge of the village, hugging the small boubous huts that dangle from the canopy.

Your drones slowly move into the village and examine the various items. You quickly make note of what you could only assume is some manner of weapon or hunting tool. You briefly picture one of the locals wielding a dozen of the freakish blades, spinning across the ground like a tornado of knifes. A number of strange spears are there as well, their shafts slightly curved and their ends built into delicate slings of knotted rope, as if the blade was intended to be slung from the spear like a catapult, or break off in the wound of an animal. Your drone picks one up, holding it awkwardly in its claw. The others start to move closer.

Your drones quickly make it across the overgrown mountain, the locals leaping from tree to tree with a natural grace.

"Some more blood here, and some scrap of cloth."

Your drones quickly close in, hunting party in tow. The local creatures scatter in all directions as you close in to surround the small scouting team and your drones hang back out of view.

"Shit, what was that?" You can hear the humans now, your drones slowly creep into a position and the locals roll into the trees with their knives planted into the trunks.

The marines move in, three humans clad in armor, rifles at the ready. The one in the front is holding a small scrap of cloth and a chitin slug in one hand and a CIP pistol in the other. As the humans move forward you watch as the creatures pull their knives from the bark of the trees and drop to the shrubs below.

"The hell was- Get down!"
One of the humans turns, bringing his rifle up to face the coming blade laden wagon wheel. He lets off a quick burst of fire as it rolls over him, taking his arm with it into the brush beyond. Another swings from above on a snapped vine, spinning like a top. Its knives scrape against the marine's armor until one finds a mark in a joint and sinks into the cloth. The blade breaks against the fabric but the marine is sent spinning into the dirt. The lead marine spins around and brings up his pistol. A bolt of lighting lashes out and seers the creature where it stands.

You can hardly make out what they are saying as they scream a mix of orders and shocked yelps, and before they can regroup you see another creature spin itself into a frenzy with a small sling in each arm. Stones and sharp bits of flint fly at the scouting party in a haze of shrapnel like machine guns. Their armor seems to deflect the attacks, but several lucky shots knock the marines off balance as another wave of the tribal creatures charge.

"Team six? Team six! Report!"
"We're under attack! Native life is hostile!"

The locals roll over the marines with their knives out. A spray of bullets puts one of them down just as it tears into the facemask of one of the marines.

"Kenly's down! Fall back! Get the fuck out of here!"

The two left turn to run, spraying the jungle behind them for good measure. Another local is fried with a bolt of lighting as they continue their barrage of stones and small spears. You watch as several knives find their way into the dense fabric of the marines' armor, most bounce off harmlessly, but several manage to plane themselves in the gaps between the plates and woven micro-fibres. They are meant to stop bullets, but just about anything can break if it's hit hard enough.

"Team six, move to evac now, a gunship is moving on your location, get to the landing site."

The marines sprint across the small bridge of roots as the contents of a sling slams into the back of one of them, sending him tumbling into the river and down the cliff to the valley below. The natives finally start to slow down as the last of the scouting team moves through the brush on the far side of the river.

The body is still and the blood has stopped gushing from the shoulder, his weapon still clutched into the discarded arm. The marine at the bottom of the ravine is found in the branches of a tree. The limbs are twisted into gnarled tangles and the neck is limp at a right angle. You quickly cut the body down and carry it back to the cave entrance.

You hear the engines of a gunship whine as it dips down and lifts off in a hurry, although you can't see it through the canopy.

"All forces, fall back at once. Repeat, fall back to the landing zone and prepare for evac."

It appears that the Union has ended their search, and will be going home empty handed.

You quickly call several thinkers to your attention and have them look through your drones as they return to the village. There appears to be some manner of meal being prepared. You note several trees have been chopped down and the massive trunks have been hacked into. The trees are hollow, with twisting and tangled tubes running through the center. Your drones remain near the cave and observe the creatures as they seem to begin some celebration. Strings covered in small totems are hung from the branches of the trees and pyres are set up around the village. Their numbers appear to have increased as well.

Your pod watches in silence as the small fleet pulls into a high orbit and slowly accelerates out of the system.

The day on Raligha is finally ending, and as it grows dark the creatures light the bonfires and fill the air with the strange drumming language and the sound of the hollow tree horns. They seem to start a feast, although after a while you notice they appear to be covering a large wooden table in food, meat and plants of all kinds as well as more bowls of mushy paste. The massive table cut from the trunk of the local trees is places almost directly in front of the cave entrance.

You tend to your hive in other places. Your shuttle finds a massive mountain many miles from your hive. The mountain appears worn smooth from wind and rain, and is covered in a layer of limestone. Small clusters of growths cling to the rocky mountainside like parasites and several large mushrooms sprout from the sides at odd angles.

8 of them. They, and all existing shuttles, should have cloaks on them.

That one shuttle that had the Hel's Angel's cloaking field attached should give it back to the Angel so it can use it in case someone tries to radar and sonar the ground again.

>Lay new drones/ships (write in)
Four more spy pods, to spy on the systems we haven't visited yet.

I, personally, think a decoy is worthwhile. Making a /functional/ decoy is pointless. Having an empty sack of chitin sitting on our throne on Leeland costs a handful of nutrients and can possibly be useful if another scenario like Smith pops up. It's harmless paranoia.

Making a fully-capable egg-laying 'decoy' is dumb.
>>
>>35036517
Decentralization of operations is a valid tactical and intelligence motivation for laying an eggsack even for capital world use. It's honestly not that expensive.
>>
>>35036536
It's of marginal value, yeah.

The labyrinth reconfiguration is also costing us in construction time.

But they're both for the sake of paranoid preparation for the next John Smith. They're too interested, now.

They'll want to force us to communicate by threatening the queen, probably. I assume that was what John Smith was going to do. Hold queen hostage and demand real answers.

The decoy allows them to believe they've succeeded in that when they haven't. But admittedly this is all speculation for a future scenario.
>>
>>35036588
>Mandible: combat 1

That's exactly what I was saying. It's a waste to spend so much on something that's suppose to be disposable.
>>
>>35036591
I'd normally agree with you.

But being especially paranoid, we may be asked to lay eggs in front of them to confirm queen status.

It's a completely ridiculous notion that they might do that in the hypothetical mexican standoff, that they'd harbor any doubts this is the real queen in the first place, but it's sort of a nagging idea.
>>
>>35036588
Could we make one that just looks like a queen? With a nonfunctional egg sac?
>>
>>35036738
At the same time, whatever. Egg sack isn't a totally waste in general (decentralizing activity would make infiltration more difficult for future John Smiths) and the 'decoy' bits are only 10N on top. I basically don't care as long as there's no Advanced Relays in it.
>>
>>35036794

>>

How many relays do we currently have in the sector? I'd rather we have direct communication with the fake queens so that we can give them the self destruct order if thing are really bad. >>

You do, you dense fuck.

You have that with every single drone within range of the advanced relays. The relay in the pod in low orbit of Raligha can reach the drones down on the surface, even.

Advanced relays have a range as large as moderate relays for reaching regular drones, because it'd be pretty stupid of them not to.

The new drone should be your complete twin in appearance, able to stand in as either you, or your daughter if the need to interact with another ever arise again, whether or not you wish to. In addition, it will permit you to expand your hive elsewhere without the need to shuttle drones and materials back and forth continuously.

As you oversee your hives continued expansion you note some of your guests have becomes restless. You watch as several of the officers pace impatiently back and forth, and one of the lower ranking crew in the common area appears to be attempting to pick open the door. He has managed to dig a small hole in the wall membrane, although all he has found is chitinous struts and a net of scabbing capillaries that quickly undoes whatever progress he manages to make. Elizabeth appears to have become intrigued by the nature of the cell's interior, and the small boubous sensor clusters that coat the ceiling.

As your speaker moves to the door it flexes open. You could swear the doctor seems to notice just a moment before the door opens, and as the speaker enters she moves back slightly to give the drone space.

"You are curious of the hive?"
She clears her throat before answering. "Yes... yes of course, who wouldn't be? I'm still not sure what's happening here. To me, I mean."
"What are your current theories?
"You mean about you?"
"Yes."
She pauses for a moment to collect her thoughts, glancing around the cell periodically. "Bio-mechanical infrastructure, although I'm not sure how much. Similar appearance to insectoid life, but too big for just an exoskeleton. You have remarkably similar vocal organs as a human, which could be either coincidence or a form of... extremely rapid and highly adaptive genetic engineering or some form of natural adaptive evolution. I would love to witness some of your culture, or perhaps-"
"Would you be willing to attempt a translation?"
She seems surprised at the request. "Erm, well, the circumstances are rather strange, but I don't suppose I have anything better to do. Very well."

Your speaker forms the symbols along its carapace between its antennae. Her eyes grow wide.
"My god! An adaptive camouflage, and such an extraordinary level of sophistication! Is that a result of technological advancement or is it a natural ability?"
"That is not the issue. The symbols."
"Yes. Yes of course." She calms herself and walks closer to your speaker to get a better view. "It's... not any language I've seen before. They seem to be very intricate, mathematical even." She leans in closer and reaches out to your speaker. "Hold still for a moment, I-"

You feel a bolt of shock run through her mind as a series of memories washes over her consciousness, this one even stronger than before.
You only catch of momentary glimpse, planets engulfed in fire, entire star systems reduced to clouds of vapor. She reels back out of reflex.
"Hurensohn!"

well I just picked this up 3 threads back, from what I understand these people are not here by choice nor do they want to be here. It takes a long moment for her to recover. She slowly rises back to her feet, her fingers pressed against her temples. "I'm not sure. Some kind of war... I think. Or maybe some cataclysm. I'm not even sure. Maybe we should keep at arms length for now.
"Can you translate the symbols?
She rubs her eyes as she responds. "I'm sorry, I've never seen it... Hold on." She leans in closer again, this time careful to avoid contact as she points out the symbols. "This one. The symbols on your speaker's carapace shift to a new sequence as she leans in to look. "Ok. I still don't know how I keep getting this information thought, so I can't claim it's anything more than a feeling. This one seems to indicate an origin, and this one a destination. Very well. Prepare your brainus.

It's not really privileged information.

...Though considering the star configurations were unfamiliar, and the reference to star systems being destroyed...

I'm wondering what it meant by "destroyed". If it included the star itself, and not just its planets.

And the reason we don't recognize the configuration, is that there used to be a lot more stars in this sector.

"If you wish, it could be projected to you."
"You mean in my mind?"
"Yes."
She thinks for a moment before sitting back down on the floor. "I might as well get used to it. Sure, let's do it."

One of your drones on Raligha stands over the podium. You quickly rout the image from the drone and direct it to the doctor's mind. Her face tenses and she shuts her eyes as the image washes over her, but the discomfort seems to pass in a moment.
"This is... amazing! It's as if I'm in two places at once... is this how you-"
"The chart."
"Sorry. Of course."

As she focuses on the image you feel a sensation of memories slowly seeping into clarity, becoming focused.
"It's... not a map at all, really. It's more like a chronicle."
You see a hive queen. Thousands of them, all together, speaking through their strange effigies, tall, slender drones used as emissaries. They are arranged around a strange device of moving crystal. You feel them think to the device, projecting their will all at once, and the crystal turns inwards on itself and expands into unnatural shapes. The crystal twists and controls, twitching into knots of spacetime.

The memory flashes again, and you see another crystal, this time a twisted black monolith, branching out like an ancient tree's gnarled branches. It's... consuming a planet, spreading along the surface like a cancer.

"Oh my god!" The doctor opens her eyes again, shaking the visions from her head. She looks up at your drone again. "Did you... did you see it too? What was that?"
>>
>>35038790

"We are trying to learn exactly that."

"What did you see?" You wonder if you missed some of the information.
"It's a chronicle of a mass exodus. Something... alien, attacking everything, and you!" She points to your drone. "These are your memories, but they weren't meant for you."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean... It's a legacy. I'm not sure how I know any of this, but I think that that arc was intended for... anyone but you, but it was made by your own species. It doesn't make sense. I just get the feeling that it's like a time capsule, or a message in a bottle."
"A what?"

You receive a small burst of knowledge. A concept. A small glass bottle drifting for years in a stormy ocean, sealed with a letter inside. You're not sure if she intended to respond directly like that...

"I'm sorry... This is all very, very tiring. Maybe we can try again in the morning?"
>>
>>35038867
"Very well."

It seems it was left by a rebel queen who didn't like the direction their species was going.

So they left a message for non networked life to fight them.
>>
>>35038867
sure we can call it a day. Maybe give her something as thanks?

>"I mean... It's a legacy. I'm not sure how I know any of this, but I think that that arc was intended for... anyone but you, but it was made by your own species. It doesn't make sense.

And the rabbit hole gets deeper.
>>
>>35038867
Interesting, it would seem our ancestors sought to protect us from the truth. Perhaps they believed we would be safer from the dark ones if we were unaware of their existence?

Either that or it was the dark ones themselves who left that message in the sphere...
>>
>>35038898
>our ancestors
She's making a mistake.

She's assuming the crystal hives are genetically related to the organic hive queens. They're probably not.

But she doesn't realize that yet. Because we misled her to believe it was 'our' temple.

>>35038867
Thankyou, doctor.

>>35038911
I'm sorry, but when did we find evidence for a distinction between crystal and organic hives? By crystal I assume you mean under the thrall of whatever the fuck the Ceph worship.
>>
>>35038867
Alright theorycrafting time.
Vaughn's statements of the message not being for us may mean that whoever these crystal hives were, they weren't our ancestors.

>You see a hive queen. Thousands of them, all together, speaking through their strange effigies, tall, slender drones used as emissaries. They are arranged around a strange device of moving crystal.
I don't really know what they were doing here. Were they communicating with Them or were they trying to subjugate it?

Either way, the crystal hives ended up dead and the destruction seems to match the visions that we saw when we were tapping into the Crystals we found on the Hel's Angle.
>>
>>35038867
Elizabeth gets up from her spot on the floor and walks over to the wall. She presses against her eyelids as she slides down the wall.
"It's been a rough few days."
"Very well." Your drone says, and it backs out of the cell. Every answer seems to beg another question. You rarely dwell on a subject for too long with your mind spread across such vast distances, but this troubles you. Between whatever this is and the Union expansion you're not sure what to expect. You look back into the cell. She is already fast asleep against the soft membrane wall.

You add the symbol translations to your thinkers' workload. You hope to get something less arcane eventually, but between the visions of the human and the religious dogma of the ceph you're not sure how to actually make sense of it.

A patrolling worker is moving past the chamber and you look in for a moment. It's still there. The small, black crystal array of the Ceph Slip Drive. The shape always seems to be different, even though you know it never moves. They emit no sound, but whenever you look at them you feel as if you can hear a faint whisper.
You seal the door and leave them in the dark once more.
>>
>>35038957
>that whoever these crystal hives were, they weren't our ancestors.
That's the most obvious thing in the world.

They have completely different biology. Completely different methods. They have weird crystal technology that we simply do not have. And the queen was born with all the technological advancements of her species in her brain.

>>35038949
You assume spectacularly stupidly then.

The difference is they're obviously not the same species at all, and don't even seem close. They could even be silicon based from all we've seen at this point.
>>
>>35038971
Dun dun dun.

Man, I was thinking of having the crystals under watchful eyes at all times to make sure they don't change again...

But maybe it's best not to look at them at all, after all. Never mind me.
>>
So, a research subject that's a bit missing:

The 'scrambler' that the humans on Raligha used, when they thought it would be Unity they'd be firing a missile at.

I wonder if it'd be as effective against Union technology too.

Your workers finish your farm expansion and begin more in depth alterations to your hive tunnels, altering every curve and twist to be unrecognizable.
You keep thinking on how to find another source of answers. Your thinker still recalls the first few moments of its own existence, just prior to your own. A short record of stars and a brief number of jumps. Wherever your pod was launched from it shouldn't be too far away, but then again, maybe that isn't such a good thing.

You take account of your forces. Your ships lurking in the asteroid field of your system. You doubt it would be enough to stop any fully equipped attack, but of course the element of surprise can count for a lot.

>>35039385
>Size 6200 Meters
So that's like the size of one of Unity server ships then.

>>35039385
Zero for now? Would rather rake in the nutrients income, that thing is like... 1000N upkeep a day ish?
>>
>>35039385
I was wondering. Can the hive ship even Blink?

Just how long does it take to calculate its jump?
>>
>>35039385
Okay, I'm changing my vote for the orbital station if its that conspicuous. If building it out in deep space or another system, maybe, but it is too soon to blow our cover juussst yet.

Also, could we cloak the frigates for an extra 75 N and 225 M? I'd build two if we can.
>>
>>35039407
Speaking of nutrients, maybe that nutrient powder we found in that barren system could allow us to make an alternative nutrient source that "could" allow big ships like that to be self-sufficient nutrient-wise. We need to research it to find out for sure though. Wait, did we even research that?
>>
>>35039385
4 frigates
Add:
The gilled units and the space pods.
>>
>>35039441
The pods were already added in the previous post.

>>35039431
It may be worth researching, yeah.

It was such a trace amount of nutrients out there in its natural habitat though, so I'm not too hopeful.
>>
>>35039385
>4 frigates
>20 gilled workers
>20 gilled warriors

>>35039407
Just about, and it fills a similar role as a mobile base. The Unity just rely on them a lot more heavily for their logistics.

>>35039416
Yes it can, and it does take a while.

I think we should conclude for tonight. I'll try to stick around for a while for questions, comments and and anything else.
>>
>>35039385
None, let's get exploring uncharted space baby.

>>35039471
Nooo dammit too late?
>>
>>35039441
>4
That is like 4000N upkeep a day. That's using up a third of the new farm capacity already.

Please no. Let the nest egg build. We need the reserves.
>>
>>35039471

Will we ever get Dreadnaught / Titan Construction?

As in, Viable fuckhueg space combat craft?

If we do, do you already have an image of them?

We would probably need to somehow improve the ever-loving fuck out of BestFTL to make them truly viable though
>>
>>35039471
So any concensus on this drone design >>35028468?
>>
>>35039492
>As in, Viable fuckhueg space combat craft?
You mean capital ships.

>>35039471
>I think we should conclude for tonight.
Aw what. I thought it would be double feature.
>>
>>35039471
Whatever happen to the worms research?
>>
>>35039471
So can we add cloaking fields to those frigates? It would really round out their operational capacity, even if used for brief moments when closing in/retreating from an enemy craft.
>>
>>35039501

Capital Ships are only HUGE and not HUEG.

Get it right anon.
>>
>>35039471
Dammit, the frigate vote was tied.
>>
>>35039479
Yea, that's why I wanted to get as much of the ship and drone production out of the way before we ended for the night, so we could start next week with a fresh fleet ready to launch.

>>35039492
The battleship fills the "fuckhuge combat craft" role rather well, I think.

Size: 2060 Meters
Spinal Mounts: 5
Turrets: 12
Fixed: 18
Auxiliary: 22

>>35039514
Yes, you can add a cloaking field to any space craft in theory, the cost just starts becoming silly for the bigger ships.
>>
>>35039471
Yeah, let's keep em at two. We straight up do not have enough nutrients to build 4 right now. Also, cloaks?
>>
>>35039542
Please cancel the frigates mate.

They cost way the hell too much, there aren't even enough nutrients in the bank to cover their upfront costs.
>>
>>35039471
Bump the four to a two in regards to the frigates and add clocking.
>>
>>35039542
Unless I crunched the numbers wrong adding cloaking fields increases the cost by 75 N 225 M, to a total of 2247N 3225M. It seems reasonable enough to me.
>>
>>35039528
>>35039554
>>35039581
Sorry about that. Yea, you can add cloaks to them if you want. Technically you could cloak a Hive ship, the limit is only how much nutrients you're willing to spend on it.
>2 frigates with cloaking.

>>35039507
I'll go back and double check it this week to make sure it's not missing or got deleted or something.
>>
>>35039542
>so we could start next week with a fresh fleet ready to launch.
Well exploration involves a solitary scout corvette going into mysterious Unity numbered star systems, not fleets, really.

The invasions come later.
>>
>>35039542

One must always ask the question whether or not we can make something Bigger.

Honestly, I truly doubt we are going to even have that many Battleships for the forseeable future, too big, not resource viable enough.

Would be fun to watch people shit themselves over a fleet of them though.

What's the biggest Union ship in comparison?
>>
>>35039605
>What's the biggest Union ship in comparison?
I imagine it's also called a Battleship and is of similar size.

Considering they also call their smallest ships Corvettes, of a similar size to the hive's.
>>
>>35039581
Just a reminder, our current nutrient income is at 8505, that's more than triple the cost of one of these things. We took similar risks when we were starting up, and these will provide much more leverage in a space battle, an area we are currently sorely lacking in.
>>
>>35039542
Hey what ever happened to the worms from the survey? Are they still something we can look or have we done all we can?
>>
>>35039626
There is a vast difference between the start and current state of affairs.

There isn't a jungle big enough to go out and find a big boost 8x your current natural income of farmable nutrients.

The only way to build up more nutrients is to actually show some self control and wait several days before laying shit.
>>
>>35039594
Disregard this:
>>35039627
>>
>>35039605
The biggest Union ship you have seen would be the Texas, which is about 3 kilometers long.

>>35039627
I thought I had added something in for them, but I'll double check this week to make sure it wasn't messed up or lost from the list. I seem to be having bad luck with editing the pastebins today.
>>
>>35039626
Game-mechanically, it's impossible to lay them after laying the others.

Literally.

So we should really be laying zero frigates until later when more nutrients are in reserves.
>>
>>35039640
Aren't we currently expanding the algae farms? That's going to further increase our income.

Think of it like this, it's a calculated investment. Yes we're spending most of our reserves but its for something we urgently need. Unless something goes horribly, horribly awry before the next thread, we will have rebuilt those reserves and added to them, and have two deadly new ships to show for it.
>>
>>35039679
You aren't listening properly.

It's impossible to proceed without a buildup of nutrients. You tie your own hands, or mandibles, as it were, and become completely unable to lay more things until you wait, and wait, until you have nutrients reserve built up again.

You completely lose the ability to respond to new threats and situation.

>>35028047
>Nutrients: 4913

Also, we are already out of nutrients. We have to wait a few days to build up more again.

We spent over 4000 Nutrients.... *before* someone decided they wanted to suggest a frigate design. Which was then completely unaffordable.

It literally has to wait.
>>
>>35039679
Wait, what I meant is:

You could obtain a quick boost of nutrients in a single day of foraging in the jungle in early threads. It was big compared to the upkeep of the hive and currently farmed fungus.

We have no equivalent of that anymore, because absolutely no jungle is big enough to provide a boost big enough to matter.
>>
>>35039357

>Auxiliary(4): Cyclotron 40 M
That seems like a terrible idea.

This thing needs point defense. Surely auxiliary should be Autocannon.
>>
>>35039605
>One must always ask the question whether or not we can make something Bigger.
Sorry to ruin your 'fun', but one must always ask to what purpose you could possibly want that.
>>
>>35039702
But isn't the upkeep cost of 5455 N subtracted from the income of 8505? If so than the cost of 2 frigates is well within bounds, even if that comes exclusively out of saved nutrient reserves. By the next thread the approximately 3000 N that go into the reserve will nearly completely replenish it.
>>
>>35039594
>>2 frigates with cloaking.
With what nutrients?

They were all spent on pods and corvettes to the tune of like 4450N by my math.
>>
>>35039733
Cyclotrons are point defense weapons, that's why I recommended them. Quest said himself they are superior at the role compared to autoguns in nearly every way.
>>
>>35039796
No he didn't? Where? I recall him saying the literal exact opposite of that. Auto Cannons being better.
>>
>>35039780
Oh hell that's right, I forgot about those things. Guess we won't be getting those frigates started this thread then.
>>
>>35039777
What?

The upfront laying costs, which is double daily upkeep, have to be taken out of the reserves at laying time.

And the reserves are bone dry.
>>
>>35039647
QD, cancel the frigates down to zero? Lay zero of them? We can't afford them for a while.
>>
>>35039807
That's not how I remember that discussion, and the way it's described makes it sound as if it's designed to blow up incoming missiles from afar.

>Rapid Pulse – This weapon directly interferes with electronic transmission, making it more difficult for the target to maintain a target lock, and decreasing the target’s accuracy temporarily.

I mean, if I'm wrong on this I'd say go for autoguns but I'm fairly certain cyclotrons are suited for defensive action.
>>
>>35039796
Cyclotrons were never mentioned. The discussion was about Linear Particle Beams. You remembered wrong.

>>34383912
>Technically yes, but autocannons receive a bonus to targeting smaller craft or missiles, especially with explosive ammunition, while Particle beams suffer a large penalty if used in a such a small weapon mount.

And autocannons still get a bonus that they don't.

C-beams are along the worst point defense weapons, because they have a low rate of fire.

The LPB can fire continuously, just as the autocannon can fire slugs continuously.
>>
>>35039839
Why not cancel the corvettes and build the frigates instead? The frigates are far better suited to ship to ship combat, the corvettes lack the integrity to do so.
>>
>>35039109
Yeah, John Smith debriefing.

Actual mistakes made:

- Not having the Flies watching the camp at all times as soon as it touched down.

- Not tracking every human on the planet with them at all times. This should be new policy. Although it's a bit late, they won't be this 'friendly' again.

- Not leaving all, or one of, the worker drones behind while Speaker goes with Lee on the hunting trip. Staying behind with Smith.

Any of the above would have kept Smith within earshot and eyesight at the camp, and noted his leaving into the jungle.

One can learn from this, and refine the art of paranoia.
>>
>>35039884
Because they actually fit with the current need for stealth and ambush attacks.

We may encounter another Raligha situation at any time, and we can't afford to keep paying off Unity to do this shit for us.

A combo attack of roasting the enemy to death before they can fight back is our best weapon.
>>
>>35039796
>>35039807
>>35039852
>>35039878
Random anon here. Just went ahead and threw it on the ask.fm.

"How do Cyclotrons fair vs Autocannons in terms of point defense? Does each have their own advantage depending upon the target and are otherwise comparable in effectiveness. If so, can you please give a quick rundown of said situations."
>>
>>35039938
You don't need to ask for something that has already been asked, and is clearly based upon game stats you can review yourself:

http://pastebin.com/YTwGk8n1

It's perfectly clear. High RoF is the hallmark of point defense. A bonus to hitting smaller targets, since missiles are usually smaller than the ship, is also clearly in its favor.

The evidence is right there. There's no evidence that Cyclotrons are suitable at all except a discussion that has been linked already and it was nothing like anon remembered.
>>
>>35039938
Cheers anon. That should help clear things up a bit.
>>
>>35039852
>That's not how I remember that discussion
Then link it?

Because it sounds like you're talking about >>35039878 otherwise.
>>
>>35039974
Anon, its pretty clear as a point defense weapon the cycoltrons suck, but as a general capacity defense weapon they might be more versatile.

Their accuracy is much higher so they might be able to shoot missiles from further out than the autoguns. It's pretty clear from their listed special that they have some kind of capacity to do so.
>>
QD is kill
>>
So we just implanted the memories of Queen Serenity from the Silver Millennium into a human, who is now transforming into the Moon Princess.

Basically.
>>
>>35040006
Yeah I conceed that autoguns are the better point defense system here, would've put them on the auxiliary points on the frigates had I remembered that little exchange better. I'd say we should swap the cyclotrons out right now but as argued here>>35040012 they might actually be useful for blowing up missiles while they're still far out. We don't know a whole lot about cyclotrons applicability in space warfare unfortunately. I was hoping QD could shed a bit of light on the matter before we started building the things.
>>
>>35028047
Okay now where do we send the pods next week?

>M-199
>M-323
>A-295
>1-5
>0-3
>0-1
>0-2

>New Port

And hey, because it's within range...

>Sagittarius
>Aquila
>>
Oh, and I guess next week we should finally start synthesizing human diet.

...So we can slip experimental drugs into their food too.
