It's almost noon in Gallete. Soldiers scramble back forth on their shifts, maids move mountains of dishes from the barracks to the kitchens.

And you are Jack Albator, weary seafarer, exhausted traveler, and now you're enjoying the first ten or twenty minutes of your morning bumbling down the hallways. You would liken this feeling to a light hangover, or maybe working on-end for several days.
You've experienced much worse, and you already know where to get the cure you need. This miraculous liquor that can cure the morning laziness is sure to be found down at the bar.

You're not entirely sure why you feel this way, because last night ended with talking about magic circles and villages disappearing. Two things that, combined in your head, were technical and boring enough to allow your mind to tune out the world and sleep like a baby. Much to the librarian's dismay; after he had to go fetch the castle staff to haul your sleeping ass out of the library and off his extremely delicate library furniture.

You rationalized this as not being your problem.

"Jack! I was wondering where you were!" Aligot says, peeking his head out of the door to the library.
"Yar, Lad, what's up."

He eyes you carefully, maybe he notices the bags under your eyes, or the unkempt hair, or he simply has eyes and notices your exhaustion.

"..Jack did you sleep well last night?"
"Yar..."
"Y'know, it's been several days, I guess you should be feeling some effects of it by now."

Effects?
"..Of what?"
"Y'know, being away from Atsuko."

>"Yes! My body's grown taller, I've become more endowed, and I now walk with a spring in my step."
>"I've enjoyed life more since coming here?"
>"..Is this have something to do with having to stay at the shrine?"
>Ignore him, acquire booze
>Pop in the library and see what the news is on the magic circle shenanigans.
>Go see the hero instead, time for her surprise training regiment.

"Yes! I'm taller, I've become more endowed-"
You click your heels together
"not to mention the spring in my step."

Aligot looks at you with minor confusion,
"Uhm, that's not the side effect I was expecting?"
"Were you expecting my teeth to get whiter, as well?"

"Actually, Um. You should be feeling tired. Heroes need to spend time near the people who summoned them, it's like going without sleep for normal people."
"Wait up, lad, 'Spend time'? No one ever told me this! How much time?"
"I..don't know how it works exactly. When I did some reading on it, the most common way of spending time near their summoner was.."

His cheeks show a hint of redness, his voice lowers into a barely audible whisper.
"..sleeping with them."

You didn't say anything, but you are now profoundly thankful to fate that Atsuko was the one who inadvertently summoned you and not Aligot.

Wait does that mean, all the other heroes, every night, they're-
"I think I need a drink."
"Um? What? What'd I say?- Wait Jack! I didn't mean 'Sleeping' sleeping, I mean-"

You tune him out before he finishes. It's something you wouldn't immediately consider even if it meant a few days of hangovers. The Capt'n always said it best, what was it again?
Right, "Don't stick it in crazy."

Down the hall, you see the bartender has already put out a drink for you on your approach. You've taught him well over the past few days.

Other than that, there's some things you should probably do before calling your job done here.

So, what first on today's agenda?

>Train the new hero, she's green and you're not sure she's ever fired a pistol in her life.
>Back to the library, it's boring but you should know more about what they're doing.

Right, you need to go talk to Madeleine. She was too busy to talk to over the past few days, and you need to think of a way to compensate her.
After all, if something like this happens again, it's always beneficial to be in good terms with a doctor.

You walk back toward the kitchen, making sure to slip past the scrambling maids without tripping anyone. Behind you, several of them yelp in surprise and complain that someone grabbed a hold of their tails. They chatter amongst themselves about an invisible, mysterious, and handsome devil who would take such unfair advantage of the castle staff during working hours.

Calling out to the chefs, you learn that Madeleine left them with several types of potions to give to the hero over the next few days. The guy behind the counter fumbles and counts all the vials as he puts them away in a cabinet.
"-and to tell you the truth, I doubt we'll remember what half of these do by the time the week is over. Really, I can't see the purpose of cooking food that doesn't taste good." The cook says, looking extremely smug.

You sigh in frustration, apparently Madeleine showing the pointed-eared menace things like 'medicine' and 'tonic' wasn't enough for them to admit that maybe their evil-spirit based theory of disease was lacking.
"So she saved someone's life with those, and you- Never mind. Whar is Madeleine now?"

"She's packing her bags, apparently the castle paid her fee and wanted her gone lest her evil spirits started haunting the place."

You want to facepalm, but you sort of expected this kind of short-sighted stupidity at this point.
You make your way to the stables, with any luck, you're still in time to catch up with her.

The stables come into view, as well as the rabble that surrounds anywhere that is a popular transportation point. Travelers are packing their bags, trying to load already over-encumbered birds with even more cargo, feeding the few birds who are finishing their journeys.

One traveler in particular sticks out, notably due to her lack of legs. Which is good, because with the extremely long cloak covering her body; you may have never noticed her.

"Hargh, Madeleine!" You yell, barely noticing the stares you get as you do so.
She spins around, careful not to attract any more attention than she needs to.

"Jack? What are you doing? Here to see me off?"
"I'm here to ask why yare leaving. Where are you going?"
"The marsh Jack, I'm going back to the marsh.
She packs something into one of the saddle pockets, "I got paid with a whole year worth of food. With that, I won't have to go back to the village. If I ration it, I could start growing my own food and live by myself."

"..Did you even tell the princess that they kicked you out? You know she wouldn't stand for that."

She shrugs, "I don't see why I should, I clearly don't belong here anyway."

You put your hand on her shoulder,
"That's not true at all, Lass."

She slaps your hand away, her voice seems to raise in pitch
"How is that not true!? Do you still think I belong here?"

Oh no, you're faced again with another lass who has become emotional.

"You can keep saying I belong here all you want, but that doesn't change that I don't. They don't like my potions and they don't like me."
She slots a small book into one of the side-pockets of her bird.
"Go on now, you've said goodbye, and you don't want to catch an evil spirit from my slimy, disgusting tail. "

Why do all the lasses you have to talk down have to be so emotional?
"Listen, Lass. You're not going back to that marsh."

She turns around to face you, her yellow eyes show a faint hint of tears around the edges.
"And WHY NOT?"

She's still trying to put on her tough-girl face. She tries to free her shoulders from your grasp, but it's worthless against such a powerful grip such as your own.
You continue while holding her shoulders captive,
"The only reason that I can even say that I have had a good week is because you came by and saved a little girl's life. You don't get to say that you belong in a swamp when you deserve to be the highest authority on medicine in the land."

She tenses up, "I don't see what you're going to do about it."
"Why do you think I'm here? I'm here to tell you how I'm going to pay ya back."

She blinks, the tenseness and anger continues to bubble beneath her curious demeanor.
"First off, I'm going to get rid of those mushrooms for you. I don't care how long it takes, but we're going to do it."

"You can't deliver on any of that."

You feel somewhat insulted by that, "Lass, I'm their hero, which means they listen to me. Four nights ago I had the Biscotti Princess' tail in-"

Suddenly, you're aware some knights have stopped to listen to your story.
"What are you looking at!?" You snap back at them, they immediately return to packing their birds.

"Jack, that's very kind and all, but you can't make them accept me."

"No, but I can tell you that Biscotti isn't full of as many hardheads as Gallete seems to be."

She stops and considers your words for a few minutes.
"How would you fix me, anyway? You don't know anything about this. The swamp water is acidic enough to where it stops the fungus from growing. Where would I even stay while I'm there? I've had to sleep outside since coming here, do you think I would even be allowed to sleep in a bed like this?"

--

You hide her stuff in your room as she sets off to get some things for the trip to Biscotti. There's some important business you must attend to in the library.

Walking into the library; you notice Camille has decided to take a nap, Aligot is writing down something on a large map, and there seems to be a new face pacing back and fourth in front of a bookcase. A woman who appears to be in her 20s or 30s.

"Aligot!"
"Hey Jack! I'm glad you here."

He gestures to the other person, and she walks over. She
"Jack, meet Gougere. She's the archmage in Gallete."

"Nice to meet you, Jack, is it?"
"Jack Albator, at your service Ma'am."

"It's good to meet you. I've been hearing that Biscotti had a new hero."

"So what do you have?"
"We need some more field work back at the village, but I think Aligot should be able to finish his work in Biscotti." She says, turning to him.

Aligot puts on his professional tone,
"Right now, we were able to find out more about the circle. It's actually a type of magic spell that isn't used very often because of numerous downsides. The spell, in short, is known as 'Teleport Summon'."

"Tele- What does it do?"
"It just moves things from one place to another. It's like half of a summoning spell. The difference is: it treats things inside of it like summons. Which changes the way the barrier treats them. If a summon is hurt or injured, instead of turning into a ball, it returns to the last place they were summoned from. It was used at one time to borrow the power of monsters to do things like carve out mountains and build stone fortresses."

"I don't get what that means for us, Lass."

Aligot finishes, "It means, we don't think any of those villagers are in danger. If they were, they would teleport back to the village they were taken from. We think someone has kidnapped them."

"That sounds like promising news, so we're going to go get them?"

"Not quite." The woman sits down at a table, with some difficulty getting her large chest to fit. "We know what direction they were teleported in, we don't know how far away they are. We need this to happen a third time so we can triangulate it."

"You're sayin'... you WANT this to happen again?"

She shrugs, "I can't think of a better way to track them down. Can you?"

This has left you feeling rather shocked,
"How did they even put a big circle under a town without anyone noticing?"

"They used a mixture that we use in fireworks, it's saltpeter, charcoal-"
"Black powder."
"Um, I don't know what that is, but okay." She continues, "They pour some on the ground around the village, and I guess when everyone is gathered in the village square, they light it on fire on one end. The fire spreads to the other end, and the spell gets activated. They probably have to set up several days beforehand to make it work."

That is the strangest thing you may have ever heard.
Why is Aligot staring at you?

"Ehehe, you make me feel like a kid again."
Oh, you started stroking her head.

"So-" She crosses her legs, "Any other questions? We were going to pack up and go investigate in a couple hours."

Yes. My guess is that at the rate we're going, we're going to collapse mid-battle.

"Nah, I-"

You notice Aligot is still staring at you, and then you notice Gougere's ear flick within your grasp.
"You okay, Lad?"

"Yeah I'm fine." Aligot mumbles as he grabs a book from the desk and snaps it shut, he turns and walks toward the bookcases.

"..Anyway, I got a hero to go train before I leave."
Gougere's ears perk at that, "I saw her earlier! She's doing much better, she even went and had tea with the princess this morning. Oh, and-"

She turns to look at you, "I know a lot of people, including her, don't appreciate what you did, but I do."
For a brief moment, her hand rests atop of yours, the smile she wears warms the fabric of your heart,
"Thank you for saving our Hero's life."

That brightens your mood, she may have been the first person to actually say 'Thank you' for the work you've put in.
You're having trouble responding to it, is this what it's like to be appreciated?

She laughs, "Our hero is young, and isn't familiar with fighting, please go easy on her."
"I'll try, but since you seem to be a decent person, can I ask you to do something?"

"Hm?"
"Just.. Try to be there for her when she needs it. I'm leaving Gallete today, and I'm not sure Odette got the message when I asked her to do it."
"Of course Jack, you didn't even have to ask."

You wave you Gougere as you exit, for now, you have a hero to check up on.

"Knock Knock." You tap on the door. According to Gougere, this is where the Hero is staying.

"(Who- what?)" Someone inside says, there's some scrambling as a blonde girl hugging a pillow gently opens the door wearing her PJs.
"Morning Louise!" You say, well aware that it's almost the afternoon by now. "Ready for your training exercises?"

"but..." she says, rubbing her eyes, "I was just napping."
"And now you're not!" You say, with a laugh, "Now let's go get you a barrier jacket."
"A what jacket?" She lazily rubs her eyes, "Aren't you the pirate guy?"

This isn't getting you anywhere.
"What I'm trying to say is, little girl, is that I'm going to teach you how to be a Hero. I'm not going to be in town after today, so you'll need to defend Gallete in my place."
"Defend? Isn't that what the knights are for?"

You sigh, "Just get dressed, I'll show you how to defend yourself if nothing else."

She shuts the door and rummages around in the room, a few minutes later, she emerges with a plain white sundress with a matching straw hat. Maybe she felt that she was going on a journey.

"We're just going down the hall to the Armory. No need to dress too fancy."

You both make your way down the hallway, every now and then you notice that she seems extremely uncertain about following you anywhere.

You both make your way to the armory in time to see whoever the quartermaster is in Gallete open up shop. His tail lags in the doorway some as he steps through it.

"W-Wait" The young girl says, "Shouldn't I tell Charlotte before I go anywhere?"
"Lass, it's fine. You can go anywhere in the castle you want. Every person here is your friend. If any of them aren't, they have to answer to me."

You both approach the armory, just in time to notice the guy inside setting up a HUGE axe against the wall. You wonder if she couldn't try out something like that, just to see what her reaction would be in being able to carry it with ease. Several maids pace around inside, dusting and generally trying to keep the place clean.

Both of you set in the door as the Quartermaster spins around to meet you.

First thing you notice is his chistled form, completely bare, without any kind of cloth constraining it. Plus a pair of jet-black leather pants, and- Oh.

"Hmph, Hey Jack, Young Hero, Can I help you?"

"Hey Axel.." That's his name, right? Last time you saw him, he had lost his pants, and was wearing a tiny pair of underpanties. "I'm here to get this youngin' set up with a Barrier Jacket."

He considers that for a minute, before bending over and grabbing something out of a desk drawer. He starts scribbling onto it.
"Anything else?"

>"Yes, please put your shirt on around the young girl."
>"Maybe a weapon of some kind. I think she said that she has training with a rapier."
>"A gun, she'll need a gun."

>>
>>35076735
There are rifles in this setting? Since when?

And no, absolutely not. We're here to ensure Gallete's hero can defend herself and her army, not teach how to snipe us from the other side of a battlefield.

Hmm. Do we know about rifling? Can we share that handy little trick?
>>
>>35076829
Interesting. Quick question then, have gunsmiths in this setting begun to develop rifled barrels?
If not is our revolver a smooth bore gun?
>>
>>35076888
>>35076881
Smooth because magic projectiles don't require rifled barrels. They don't use gunpowder for their propulsion.
>>
>>35076912
So? If you have a projectile regardless of the source of the energy, its going to shoot straighter and farther with a bit of spin. Unless the shots aren't even being effected by the air, in which case it's basically an energy weapon.
>>
>>35076912
Neato, so they only use 'gunpowder' for fireworks? Can we get the armorer in Gallete to make anti-demon rockets for us?
>>
>>35076965
>magic projectiles don't require rifled barrels
From the way he phrased it I assume magic projectiles don't behave like lead projectiles when launched at a target at high speed.
>>
>>35077017
I'm not sure what the significant differences would be, supposing its at least partially a physical object.
>>
>>35076965
You make a good point, but most of the guns Jack has used were weapons loaded with magic energy.

Going back and looking at some screenshots again, I realized Ricotta used a gun that had loaded ammo, it's just the loaded ammo behaved like magic projectiles for some reason. So I suppose Rifled barrels have to be a thing, then. Especially if Jack has a revolver.

So I guess that settles that, I'm wrong on there being no rifling. I will assume rifled barrels exist somewhere in the various armories.

plus, this gives me a lot of reasons to add more rifle types.
>>
>>35077059
Well if its a magic bullet, it could have magic rifling. Sorta like a spinning energy field in the barrel or something. Or maybe the propulsion itself does it and it needs no rifling. Only point is that it takes advantage of spin.

"A rapier, she apparently has some trainin' with it. Also, put on a shirt in front of the young lady."

He grumbles at that request as he throws on one of his dirtied, white shirts.

You look down at Louise,
"Want to try using a rifle or a pistol?"
"Umm. What's the difference?"

You chuckle, but this isn't a good sign either way.
"Well, One is for fightin' The others' is for fun!"
She continues to give you a blank stare.

".. Okay we'll just use the sword this time."
Axel takes the circular scroll he was scribbling on to the back.

Something is different this time, though.
Instead of coming out with a coat, he instead comes out with a ring?

"What's that for? Where's her Barrier Jacket?"
"You're lookin' at it."

You look at him confused, he only laughs,
"I noticed on the battlefield, you have some pieces of a barrier suit that Fritelli stitched together for you because she doesn't know how to properly make one."

He holds the ring up to the light, it sparkles against the artificial lighting, "-but this, this is a whole barrier suit in something that she can carry with her all the time."
He smiles snidely at you, "Are you jealous?"

You're tired of this game, "Just.. Give her the ring, I want to see what it looks like."

He tosses it at her, she catches with relative ease.
"Prepare to be amazed" he says, sporting the same grin.

She slips the ring on, as Axel instructs her how to summon it.
Her hand folds around the ring, and for a few seconds, her entire body seems to be glowing. Her fancy sundress seems to be completely replaced with something else.

The glow gently illuminates her as she slowly lowers her hands. Within a few seconds, she has completely changed every article of clothing on her body to her newest battle outfit.

Louise seems anxious from everyone staring at her, "S-so what do you think?"
Axel smiles, "He's jealous."
"Aye'm not jealous!"

>Thread End
>>
Okay, Sorry for ending it here and not getting out of Gallete. I wanted to get back to Biscotti this thread, but we had some hangups that slowed down my update speed.

Thank you everyone for the thread.
>>
>>35077059
Whoa slow down there, you could just retcon the bullets to be composed of magic energy instead of lead. Energetic projectiles wouldn't be subjected to the same physical laws (i.e. centrifugal force) that act on a bullet or musketball.

If we bring rifled barrels into the equation, that would completely transform how wars, and indeed all forms of combat, are undertaken in this world. Rifles would increase the distance between opposing forces from arms reach to hundreds of meters. This would mean fights where opposing combatants don't even see one another, instead of approaching each other and engaging at close range with either musket or melee type weaponry.

I for one like how combat on both the individual and large scale is handled right now, can't we just keep it this way? I'm totally fine with a bit of magic handwavium to keep it that way.
>>
>>35077382
Will right, thanks for running.
>>
>>35077384
Well, apparently they had rifling in the show and that didn't change how they fought at all.

>>35077382
Thanks for running, Announcer! Get some sleep.
>>
>>35077384
It's fine, because again, magic projectiles in Dog Days don't work that way.

In Dog Days, magic projectiles work like magic guns in video games. In that they only have a range of maybe a hundred feet or so. They behave that way because this is the most thought anyone has ever put into Dog Days weapons.

I wouldn't make rifling increase range that much, because again, this takes place quite a while before the show starts, and even there they don't have long-range weapons that aren't legendary weapons. The longest something ever shot in that show was a magic bow. With everything else only shooting maybe 50 or so feet in distance.
>>
>>35077384
Well, you could still have rifling and a shorter range, all you need to do is say the magic only allows relatively a short burst. Sort of a high energy blast that consumes the bullet after a while. Or any other number of magical shenanigans, either on the side of the guns themselves or on defenses against them. Besides it's not like we're using very advanced firearms, even with the magic involved.
>>
>>35077454
>>35077384
Also if I was going to do a retcon on anything, especially regarding loaded ammo that is seen a couple times in the show, I would just call them Cartridges.

A LOT of Dog Days is just stuff lifted from Nanoha. Cartridges are a pretty neat idea in Nanoha that would translate over fairly well to Dog Days considering that they use actual magic guns in Dog Days.

I'm not sure how many people would get angry at me for doing that, though. They have a very specific definition in Nanoha.
