You are currently having an exquisite dream. You lie flat, body adorning a wide stone as the sun beams overhead. The slow rise in temperature, the heat of the rick beneath you growing into a pleasant warmth. You can hear your sisters somewhere nearby, laughing gaily. A breeze twists through the trees lining your sunbathing spot, rustling leaves, carrying the scent of the woods, of your home.

You feel at peace.

And then- The world shifts. It rocks side to side, and you clutch at the stone as best you can as noise rises, wind whistling in your ears. No- not whistling. Whispering?

Your eyes crack open slowly in the dim light- your body moving back and forth at an insistent touch.
"Lyra- Alpha. Please. Lyra."
You groan out, twisting your head to meet the tearful gaze of your wolf.
"Sheszss-a-"

She holds your arm, eyes glimmering as she whispers.
"Please. Please. I need- I need to go."
"Nnnnn-Go?"
She looks back, towards the edge of the nest, nodding frantically.
"Yes. Go."

You pick yourself up as best you can, gently prying Sara off your shell. Where is she going? Does she want to leave? Why did she have to wake you up so early to- Oh. Ohhhh.

You scoop her up, holding her lightly in your arms as you crawl down the tree, halting a few steps from the bottom.

There's a man standing at the foot of the tree, ragged cloak wrapped around his shoulders. He turns to look at you craning his neck and squinting in the twilight.

There's no two ways about it. He looks- scruffy. Scruffy is a good word. Unshaven, worn clothing. His boots have been thoroughly battered, and what is assuredly a staff looks as though it has been chewed at more than one occasion. Light brown hair, pale eyes. You think they changed colour?
>>
>>35087578

You hang sideways off the tree, staring at each other till Sheszka whines in your arms. You skip down the last few steps, placing your chare on the ground- she spares the elf a moments glance before she books it for the trees, vanishing into the underbrush.

The elf is... comparatively tall. An inch or so less than you. Standing face to face, he breaks eye contact first, muttering.
"I- ah. Sorry. I was sure this was the right tree, miss. I'll just- I'll just be going now."
He turns away, scratching at his head to hide his embarrassment- which is, in all likelihood, about to get much worse.

>>

>>
>>35087578
Nice story, I am all caught up too.

It seems (it wasn't exactly clear) that we tend to discard failed silk creations, but spiders actually eat their own silk to recycle it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_web
>Webs allow a spider to catch prey without having to expend energy by running it down. Thus it is an efficient method of gathering food. However, constructing the web is in itself an energetically costly process because of the large amount of protein required, in the form of silk. In addition, after a time the silk will lose its stickiness and thus become inefficient at capturing prey. It is common for spiders to eat their own web daily to recoup some of the energy used in spinning. The silk proteins are thus recycled.
>>
>>35087981
>how was he to know
By asking Mom?
>>
>>35087959
On the other hand, we did have a whole past life that we remember, so we can sympathize with his viewpoint.
>>
>>35087991
we really SHOULD be eating expended silk, yeah.
But we don't. I assume for cultural reasons.
>>
I'm all for being a bit angry at him but still seeing him as dad.
>>
>>35087981
All spiders speed run childhood. The evolution didn't make us into an adult. It just changed our size/coloring.

We're still not fully grown. The other siblings are the same developmental age that we are.. just not the same evolution.
>>
>>35088000
There's also the reason that Elle collects all of it when she can in order to have extra silk to work with.
>>
>>35087991
To be fair, I bet it taste really gross, it's not like real life spiders have taste buds like we do
>>
>>35087930
>And sons!
I am sorry, I didnt know of a good way to pluralize children for that one.
But honestly I think the boys will care about him even less.

I think Lyra would be mad at Eric, since him having been away probably reminds her of her distant "old" family, she really loved how Mom is there for her, so I think she would resent Eric for being like her old family.

Also I want to have a contrast between Lyra and Sara who will adore Eric for being a Mage.
>>
>>35087950
He decided to leave for a month or two while his children were due to hatch. That's fairly dickish.

Not saying I want to act like an angsty teenager and start hating him, just think a little coldness is in order.

Elfdad better make up for his absence if he wants us to act like a loving Spiderdaughter.
>>
>>35088000
Another possible explanation is that it just tastes bland and meat is delicious, so arachne only do it when food is in short supply?
but then again, that would reduce the amount of population a location can support
>>
eh, I think we should call him Eric until he feels like a dad. I'm not saying blow him off for not being here but still he did choose to leave because he didn't like staying in one spot for to long so I don't think we should throw our arms around him and cry daddy right off the bat
>>
>>35088024
>He decided to leave for a month or two while his children were due to hatch
I think it's important to keep in mind that it wasn't a corporation, or his boss, needing him to go on a business trip while his wife was pregnant and his children growing up.

He just wanted to go and explore some ruins.
This is a dad deciding he really just wants to go do some skydiving or mountainclimbing rather than stick around for his kids and wife.
>>
In short:
We have conflicted feelings for him.
>>
>>35088105
no shit
>>
>>35088105
Pretty much, all the points everyone brought up are perfectly valid, Lyra is jsut a ball of emotions
>>
>>35088105
Not really conflicted. We have no feelings for him at all. Except vague resentment for not having been around, but we didn't really need him either, so he is just unimportant.
>>
>>35088145
YOU don't got feelings for him maybe, but piles of people admit to being angry, or missing him, or worried about him, or glad he's back...
>>
>>35088161
I don't see why Lyra would have feelings about him ? He is literally a complete stranger to her.
Because he fertilized her second mom ?
>>
>>35088192
for all the reasons previously described. That's the best I can do without infinite-same-discussion-over-and-over.
>>
>>35088192
The same reason any 12 year old who had a parent missing for their life would have feelings about said missing parent.
>>
>>35088244
That was me and I never really thought about my dad at all to be honest. The idea of being mad at or hating or missing him is really weird to me.
>>
>>35088244
But she isn't 12, and more importantly, she isn't mentally a child. She already had a live.
Kids growing about without one parent mainly suffer from being reminded of the lack, which isn't the case for Lyra.
>>
>>35088260
other people in similar situations have different responsesMy dad was away for the majority of my childhood doing vague business and I still care 'bout him.
>>
>>35088273
I've never met my father. I have no feelings what so ever.
>>
>>35088134
exactly, she cant decide if she wants to hug him or hit him, or something in between.

>>35088266
she did have absentee parents in her past life though, so feelings for a somewhat absentee parent in this life would probably be... complex to say the least.
>>
>>35088290
OK. That's got very little relation to this because of the first part of the post you quoted.
>>
>>35088266
12 is the closest age we can compare in human age, in that she has almost hit puberty but not quite. But you are right, the Arachne lifecycle isn't really comparable as they seem to reach mental maturity much faster than they hit puberty.
>>
Arms crossed over your chest, you stare him down as he tries to slink away.

He doesn't recognize you. He doesn't even recognize you!

No- It's, okay , no. He left before you hatched. And you evolved. He really wouldn't right? It makes- It makes sense. It still hurts, though. You don't like this. You bite your lip as he backs another step away.

"I'll leave, right? Ah, no need to bother you, my apologies-"
"Mom is still asleep."
It's hard to recognize your voice, thick with emotion. There's a bite to it you don't quite like, but you can't keep it out.
"Wha?"
"Mom. Nialla? You are Erics, yes?"
"I- Yes. I am. But then- You're-"
"Lyra. My name is Lyra."

He steps back, looking you over, peering at your shell, your face. He blinks frequently, reaching up and stroking the stubble smeared across his face, muttering to himself.
"She's already- shouldn't it be- no, I only shaved once-"
He clears his throat, eyes wild.
"I- How long was I gone? It shouldn't have been- It wasn't that long, was it?"

He's clearly distressed, though you're not sure what exactly for. The sticky feeling in your chest is still there, a painful ball clenched tight beneath your ribs.

>>35088296
>she did have absentee parents in her past life though
She did say that she didn't resent her family for never being there. So I see no reason for complex feelings in that regard. Maybe vague resentment, after she had gotten so used to a loving family with Mom, but even that is stretching it.

But >>35088244 implied the standard reaction would be some kind of emotional attachment, not that 'well SOME kids would feel differently'. Given I assume mom cares about Erics still I'd hardly advocate alienating ourselves from him long-term in the situation. But given the situation it's strange in my mind, especially given our MC's long life experience given their past life, to have an initial reaction to him much different from meeting a stranger.

Yes, it's very possible.

i think its more he assumed you have to be at least a couple years old to evolve, Mom was already adventuring with him for a while before she evolved.

its not just his fault, mom should have explained it too

also, why in the world would he assume that children will go from babies to full grown in weeks?

>>35088502
I don't think the evolution matters so much as childhood.
>>
>>35088441
There are so many halfway decent excuses for his absence- Maybe he thought the eggs would hatch slower, maybe he didn't know how long it takes arachne to grow.

Chances are 50/50 that hes a colossal idiot, but still. I don't know where to vote on this.
>>
>>35088495

>>35088514
Not knowing how long they need to hatch isn't really a good excuse, he ran away. So he should have asked when his children would start noticing him missing.
>>
>>35088397
Have you considered YOUR reaction might be non-standard?
There are lots of reasons why someone would have feelings about an absentee parent, but generally they're triggered by specific things. For two easy examples, if your friends have great dads (in this case) and you'd love to have one, or your single parent is too busy with work and such to bond with you, you'd naturally want a dad. Or if there was a bad break-up or the like and you can see the lack of a second parent is taking its toll emotionally or just in terms of work, you might feel resentment.

But in all of these cases your emotions are not triggered by the PERSON, but rather what they represent, to your living conditions or your other parent or your social standing or whatever. Between Lyra's previous life giving her perspective, and mom basically managing perfectly fine as a single parent in every way, none of those things are really relevant. This is very different from, say, a family where the dad is simply absent a lot for various reasons (I have an uncle that spends lots of time on ships as he's a captain for example), but is home occasionally and whose partner makes sure that their children has a relationship to their dad even if just through pictures, stories, hell just general positivity about him and mentioning him often.
>>
>>35088478
You see, I thought of this reincarnation differently than you seem to. I always felt it as more of a "Yeah, I have these memories, but this is my life. That past life is just something that happened".

It wouldn't make sense to have our verbal ticks we got from mom if it was the way you seem to be treating it as.
>>
>>35088519
have some mercy on the guy, he just found out that his 3 weeks old children are all adults and he missed their childhood by accident.
I am not one for holding a grudge over such a thing

>>35088537

>>
>>35088514
Let's not go making assumptions first, let's hear what he has to say and then we can decide on what to do.

Why do you not care at all about him but do care a lot about our siblings and mom?

No, he run away on purpose, knowing he would not be around for their hatching. Thats not on accident.

>>
>>35088646
Nah, we've pretty obviously shown care for him, whether you want to deny it or not.
Hell, we even put him in the "family expense account".
>>
>>35088537
No dude. Your reaction is very non-standard.

Having zero emotional reaction to something like this would be extremely rare. Most people would feel SOMETHING.

The exact reaction would vary greatly. Ranging from the heights of ANGST to just feeling sort of unsure how to feel.

But trying to treat this like a complete non-issue with zero emotional impact on the character for us to consider is just silly.
>>
>>35088646
>I see no reason for care.

you are projecting very badly, nothing indicated he missed it on purpose.

>>
>>35088646
>>he missed their childhood by accident
>No, he run away on purpose, knowing he would not be around for their hatching. Thats not on accident.
For the HATCHING, not for the entire childhood. he is completely befuddled by the fact we appear to be so big
He expected to come back and find a baby that hasn't learned to speak, walk, talk, or even see yet. and is not going to remember those missing 3 weeks. You know, like a 3 weeks old human baby
heck elves probably age slower than humans, he probably expected to come back and find the equivalent of a 2 days old human wiggler

While I agree that we should give him the benefit of the doubt in the case that he didn't realize how fast Arachne mature, he did still leave his pregnant and about-to-give-birth wife in order to go ruin-exploring when she told him she needs to go home to lay eggs.
That annoys me.

The guy going on and on about how nobody would care about an absentee dad because he didn't.
Even though he apparently does, because he keeps going on about how much he didn't care, which means he has some kind of absurd emotional baggage there he's not talking about.
>>
>>35088720
>He didn't get kidnapped, he knew kids were on the way and still left, thats pretty much on purpose.
He left on purpose, he came back on purpose, he was gone a time that would be insignificant for an elf, but significant for an arachne, he is confused and distraught because of this discrepancy. This confusion and distress suggests that he does care and he didn't realize what his mistake one.

He left on purpose, he missed out on most of childhood out of ignorance, he expected to be back in time to miss nothing
>>
>>35088720
Do you know what wanderlust is? and did it occur to you that he thought he would have been back before they hatched as clearly neither of our parents remembered the biological differences
>>
>>35088746
There has yet to be a argument. At no point did Lyra ever express any kinds of feelings, positive or negative on Eric or his absence. Thats just how it is.
>>
>>35088720
It sounds like you care a whole lot considering how much you're fighting this

You confuse the guy talking about his absentee dad, with me, saying I see no reason why Lyra should have any special feelings over Eric. Which is my personal opinion, which others may share or not, but the Qm asked.

>>
>>35088759
Ok, this argument is perfectly fair, that is a big mistake on his part and he deserves some flak on that. But if we rag on him for something it better be a mistake he actually made.

for that matter though, mother let him leave because it was "in his nature" to wander and failed to explain the growth rate of arachne to him
>>
>>35088838
We asked about him exactly twice. And it took us weeks to even bother asking about his species, which was the second time we ever talked about him.
And why wouldn't we include him ? He is part of our family, Lyra doesn't hate him.

>>35088936
>no counterexample, just attempts to discredit other people's example
So, there's no instance of lyra ever not caring in the entire quest? Got it.
>>
I think the main issue here is the fact that Lyra DOES care about him, as a father, and that he wasn't around.

She may not explicitly care about him as a person right now, if only for the sake of mom, but she cares about him as an IDEAL and is hurt because Erics, the person, wasn't there to cement the Ideal onto himself, and Lyra is understandably hurt by this, but not majorly so, enough to have a bite to her voice, but not enough to simply dismiss the man.
>>
>>35088951
That's no how it works anon.

Not having any strong emotions for him doesn't equal hate or 'would never give a shot as dad'. Just the fact that mom obviously still cares would be more than enough to play nice and give him a shot. That doesn't mean Lyra would particularly feel anything about him right now though.

that is a good point
not caring = apathy
not caring = never ask, never talk, never bother, never feel anything

anger, bitterness, etc... those are all caring. its not loving, its caring.

Thus far REQM has depicted Lyra as a bit conflicted over the situation. But no tantrums, angst or extreme emotional displays. This seems perfectly healthy and fitting with the character so far.
>>

I don't see how that implies "caring" in a emotional sense, curiousity, sure, he is her dad afterall, she wondered about why she looks elvish. Thats pretty much it though. At no point did she show any emotions on the matter though, one way or the other.

"Is that bad?"
"I- I don't think so? We'll see him eventually, I think. The way mom spoke, he's done this before."
"Hmmm. Okay."
"It's hard for you too, right? Your dad is human, he can't fly with you."

There's a momentary sense of detachment as his panic escalates, stuttering and stammering. He left. It was his choice, his fault.

The knot your insides have made isn't getting any better.

You take a steadying breath, stepping forward and grabbing his shoulder, cutting his babbling short. It's still hard to talk. Your throat feels tight, and you're forcing the words out, like it's a struggle just to speak.
"Three- three weeks. A little more."

His breathing slows, evens, though his eyes continue to flicker over your face, your body.
"Three. Three weeks- but you- you're-"
He sucks in air between each half statement, his free hand coming up to clutch at your arm.

You lick your lips- Your whole mouth feels dry.
"Did... Mom not talk about the eggs hatching? About-"
"No- She, she said it'd be soon- I just thought-"

You can't. You can't do this. Sheszka's emerging from the bushes, watching you with a strange look- You step back from the man, from your father, and a pained expression writes its way across his face. Picking up the wolf-girl, you back towards the tree, hugging her close.

"I'll- I'll get mom. I'll wake her up- Just, just wait there, I'll-"
You stammer as you back up the tree, turning and speeding towards the nest when your legs strike the first branch. His eyes never left your face.

You release Sheszka as you walk towards the pile of your sleeping family, gasping for breath in a way completely out of tune with the climb. She watches you with clear eyes as you clamber over to your mother, skirting your sisters, holding her shoulders loosely as you shake her back to conciousness.

"Hnnnnmmm- Lyra? What are you doing? Issss too early, yes. Sleep, little one."
"I- Mom, it's-"
The choked up tension of your voice rouses her far faster than the shaking- legs unfolding, her whole body snapping to attention as she stands. She reaches out and grabs you, pulling you close as she speaks.
>>
>>35089781
"What is wrong? Are you hurt? Are you okay? Lyra-"
"It's not- I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm-"
"Lyra-"
"Erics- Dad is here- Sheszka had to, and I took her, and he's there, but he doesn't know me-"

She strokes your hair gently as you stutter into her arms, leading you back to your sister and laying you down.
"Stay here, little one."
She stands quietly, tucking blankets around you before vanishing over the edge in seconds.

Sheszka patters up next to you, leaning into you. You wrap your arms around her, holding her tight.
"Are you well?"
"I don't know. It's cold and hot and tight and it hurts. I don't- I don't know. It wasn't like this before."
"Mama said crying is fine if you are sad."
"I don't know if I'm sad."

"You don't smell happy."
"I'm not happy- I just- I don't know if I'm sad. I don't know how to feel."
You look down at the little wolf, arms wrapped back around you, returning your hug.
"Did you cry- When?"

She buries her head further into your chest. You can feel warmth spreading, dripping into your shirt.
"A long time."
You hold her as tight as you dare, rocking the little wolf till she falls asleep.

Yes he is a turbo sue character, but its more than that. the entire book is written in first person, the character's behavior is cringe worthy and swing like a pendulum while being firmly protagonist centered morality, especially anything related to rape, torture and murder (its not that the character admits to being a villain, he and his loyal followers insist he is a hero and actually try to justify things)
Then you have the fact that it runs on hentai logic... actually in retrospect, this is basically a particularly plot heavy hentai

That's the thing with light novels.
They're basically teen fiction, complete with self-insert main characters, simple sentences, the works. And Re:Monster takes it a step further into hilarity: Instead of the MC being crap in real life, he's some ridiculous super soldier with the bestest and strongest psychic power ever, and then as he's reincarnated, sets out to make the world his bitch, while keeping his superpower.
The latest chapters (only summarized) have what literally amounts to a spreadsheet of his powers listed. He even gets the ability to combine them, and starts making hilarious super bullshit powers.
Also, he has a harem.
And his fight scenes read like step by step instructions as he lists the powers he used to kill something.

But they black out all of the good hentai bits. So it's just another crappy self insert eroge. Which is a pain because it was still a pretty good premise and decently developed world.

But the MC did pretty much soil it.
I like the minor characters to Gobukichi and Gobue or "Goblin Kichi" and "Goblin E". Those two are fun
>>
>>35089924
>The comics are different plot than the books?
So far the plot matches, its just that the production quality is much better, and its not from a first person perspective, and there isn't pages of fanfic tier prose, and it was cleaned out slightly. (ex: main character has the power to eat people/creatures to steal their abilities. it is especially potent to eat the heart and brain. early on he needs to dispose of some dead women, in the LN he specifically eats their wombs for "reasons". in the comic he just eats "a few parts" to use his ability theft power)

here is the manga
http://ak-scans.wikia.com/wiki/Re:Monster

here is the light novel
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1t4_7X1QuhiH9m3M8sHUlblKsHDAGpEOwymLPTyCfHH0/preview?pli=1
although day 10-13 are missing, they are found in the comic

for stuff after day 60 you can find a machine translation here
http://re-monster.wikia.com/wiki/Re:Monster_Wiki
but honestly the machine translation is such terribly garbled that I can't read it.
>>
>>35089835
Its hilarious. He tortures and murders people for rape- then a while later, he literally establishes what amounts to a rape factory.
>>
Down the tree we go, then.
>>
>>35090060
>>35089970
It was wise of the QM to cut out "eat people, gain powers!" for the type of story he's running here.
>>
>>35089937
Twelve kingdoms light novels were better than the anime/manga by far.
And, before anyone says it, the light novels were actually good, it wasn't just a case of the anime being shit (which I think it was).

Basicaly, Twelve kingdoms was good because there was actual character development. The MC came close to dying several times and grew because of that. The story was just as much about an average Japanese Highschooler growing into a battle hardened warrior as it was about the fantasy world she found herself in.

Shameless promotional done now. So, in brief, not all light novels are shit. But yes, RE:Monster was looking pretty damn retarded, I kept reading because I wanted to see him take over a human city with his "instant harem".
>>
>>35090113
Besides Arachne, much more fun
>>
>>35090113
That was a separate thing from what happened to us, it was based on who the MC of the LN was rather than being reincarnated, honestly if he had included it I would have said something about it
>>
>>35090134
We picked arachne actually.
I think it was a choice between arachne harpy and maybe goblin.. don't remember the last one, check the first thread. (Maybe it was Laima).
>>
>>35090063
and he justifies it with "well they attacked us" and "its ok, because what I did was drug my victims with strong aphrodisiacs and tied them up so they can't masturbate for days until they broke and become willing, also I made rules that they are to be used 1 on 1, instead of gangbangs, and I taught my goblins how to please a woman and made sure they know they are supposed to make them feel good too"

>>35090113
That is actually not a feature of the setting.
See, the MC is an Esper in the far future of earth, people stopped regarding ESP as witchcraft, humanity conquered the stars. He had the super rare power to steal power by eating them, and used it on a bunch of other ESPers so he had ALL the powers in his human life. when he reincarnated into the ReMonster world, he lost all of those powers except his original innate power of ability stealing, which he brought into the Remonster world. locals don't have such a power
>>
>>35090166
spider, bird or moth were the choices.
>>
>>35090166
It was a choice between the three races of the forest, Spider, Harpy, or Moth
>>
>>35090166
It was Arachne, Harpy, and Moth. Don't know where you got Goblin from.
>>
>>35090063
Err... wut?

Can I get an explanation for that? Like, was there reason for that? What possible reason could there be?
>>
>>35090194
>>35090177
This guys got how he 'justified' it. He killed a bunch of older goblins for trying to rape the humans he'd freed from them- they eventually all became his harem.
>>
>>35090188
I'm glad we picked spider.
Most fun option of the three.

My only regret is WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE MOTHS UP TO, I AM SO CURIOUS
>>
>>35090194
Horrible writing
>>
>>35090194
There are some women kept in the goblin caves who are baby factories (because goblins like raping women). So he killed of the command structure and made himself the gobbis king.

Later on when the elves attack he makes them rape slaves.>>35090177
This guy explains the rest.
>>
>>35090194
1. Elf noble asshole attacked him because the elf noble was a retarded git. He brought a squad of 24 elf assassins with him.
2. Goblins rate of conception with other goblins is very low and their mortality very high, so they typically keep rape slaves from humanoids to boost reproduction rate
3. Golbins enjoy sex with human 10x more than they do with their own kind, and elvens even more so because elf pussy is magical. (goblin girls even look like cute human girls)
4. His goblins were getting antsy at no humanoids to rape, so he figured "those elves attacked me and I was gonna kill them anyways... i might as well turn them into sex slaves... but to make sure its ok, I won't allow them to be raped, instead i will drug them until they "break" and become willing

>>35090232
Then when 6 older goblins were leaving because they wanted to go back to raping humans? and he just let them go.
>>
>>35090177
I think he said early on esp was a thing, just the MC did not have any.
Which I'm completely okay with.
We've got more than enough potentially broken powers to exploit.

>>35090238
I can't stop reading it though. There's som much potential in the setting for neat ass stuff to be going on.
At least the comic is gorgeous. The combat is so dry in the fucking novel it hurts.
>>
>>35090236
Seconded, at some point we need to visit the Moths. I am curious.

If we're going to visit, might as well make it productive. Maybe we could trade on their behalf. Their powders are super valuable, but they can't trade with outsiders because they're hunted.

We can ask if they want anything then go trade the powder on their behalf.

Unless they don't actually want anything. In that case, I guess we'll just visit and say hi.
>>
>>35090236

Being fragile and harmless.

That is what the Hell they are up to.
>>
>>35090289
The MC wasn't born with it, he got it on earth during his surgical enhancement for making him into a super soldier.
The ability he got was the consumption power (steal powers) which he kept into his reincarnation, hypothesizing that it is tied to his soul, unlike the stolen abilities which were tied to his body

You wrap a few extra blankets around the wolf-girls sleeping form, and she snuggles into it with a little smile. She flinches a bit when you start to pull he away, tucking her next to your younger sister- but calms down when you throw your blanket over the two of them.

Maybe it's your scent?
She got attached to you pretty fast.

The smile the thought brings you lasts as you pick your way down the tree, towards your parents. Both of your parents.

You can see them, standing amidst the roots of your home, hands gesturing rapidly as they talk in hushed tones. Their voices don't carry, even as close as you are, and you head further towards the pair.

"Nia- I didn't think-"
"I know, yes. I am not pleased, but I can at least understand. I know how you are with time, and we- I didn't really talk about how fast-"
"I'm sorry."
"I'm not the one you need to be saying that too, love."

She sighs, and he runs a hand though his hair, a distraught expression on his face.
"She looked- She looked full grown. She ran away from me."
"Not yet. Soon enough, but not yet."
"How soon?"
"A few weeks? A month? It isn't always the same. Lyra, she- She evolved first. A few of her sisters did the same, but-"

He looks down, leaning heavily on his staff.
"I don't even... How many? Of our children."
Mom smiles a bit at that, though she still seems sad.
"Six. Two boys, four girls- Lyra, Aria, Sara, Elle, Zach and Ephram."
"Are they all already taller than me, then?"
"Just Lyra, I think. Who is sitting quietly in the tree and listening."

She turns, looking up to face you.
"Eavesdropping is rude, yes. Come down here, little one."

It isn't the fact that she didn't mind or wasn't mad at her previous parents.

Then suddenly she died, with no real relationship with her parents, ended up reincarnating with a Fucken' great mom but an absent father and a young body pumping all sorts of magic and hormones into her brainmeats and body.

So far we've had
>Been a bit cold to dad.

That's hardly the height of angst. This is a fairly tame reaction for a young girl meeting her dad for the first time. I don't see what's wrong with it.

You skitter the rest of the way down the tree, approaching the pair from behind mom.

You're not afraid- You didn't hear anything bad. It's just... awkward. There's a tension in the air, emotions all over. You're not sure how to deal with it.

Mom urges you forward, and you take her hand in your own as you draw up next to her, leaning against her as your peer at the gangly elf. He stands oddly, half frozen, watching you with a morose expression. Mom sighs, squeezing your hand, offering you a small smile.

"Lyra, this is your father."
"Mmm."
You watch him, six eyes unblinking.
"Erics, This is Lyra, yes? She is your firstborn."

"Lyra."
His voice is rough with emotion. He relaxes ever so slightly, stiff posture giving way to a bit of a slouch, one hand toying with the fabric of his sleeves- They're dirty, travel-stained, but you can recognize mom's work anywhere now.
"I'm sorry. It's not- I should have been here."
Mom rubs your hand gently, her thumb gliding over the back of your chitin plated grasp.
"I'm sorry. For eavesdropping. I guess."

There's a moment of silence in the clearing, a gap in the conversation.
Erics takes a breath.
"I- Could you tell me about yourself? I know I've missed a lot, but-"
He struggles to find words.
"I have to start somewhere."
His hands come off his sleeve, his staff, palms open as he pleads.

You give Mom's hand a squeeze, sliding your fingers free and standing beside her.
"Um."
Both of them are watching you intently, Mom nodding along ever so slightly.
"I- I'm a giant spider."
They both stare.
"And a fighter. And half a mage. I rescued a moth and I fought a wolf, and lots of other things besides. I have- I have a family, a whole family, and I added a wolf to it because she needed help, and I was there. My mom is an adventurer, and one sister is a mage, one a warrior, one a weaver. The writhing knot in your chest has loosened- maybe not all the way, but it's enough for this much.

Mom takes your hand again, turning to face your father.
"Welcome home, yes? Your family is waiting."
He nods, wiping his eyes on the back of his sleeve, stepping forward.
She urges you towards the tree, and hauls him roughly over one shoulder.
She hasn't forgiven him just yet.

You crawl back under the covers in the nest, squirming in next to your sister, your packmate, and returning to rest.

I think a clear head would be good right now.

I think this worked out okay. It's not like he abandoned us or anything, he just didn't know Spiders grew so fast. It hurt a little having him absent, but it was an honest mistake, we can forgive that. Now we'll have all the time we need with him.

>If he can't be assed to ask how long his children are going to take to be born and grow

Why would he even think to ask? In that situation, I don't think I'd even suspect the kids would be fully grown in 3 - 4 weeks.

Clearly Elves don't grow that fast and he's been with Spidermom for a few years and she wasn't rapid-ageing.

It's clear he had zero clue Arachne had freakishly accelerated growth in their first month of life.
>>
>>35092499
>Why would he even think to ask?
Because he had just impregnated someone from a different species. Its rather obvious they would grow at a different rate, and he is supposed to be a scholar. Its the kind of thing you should make sure to check, if he was interested in being around on time.
Sure, he can't have known it would take only three or so weeks, but that it wouldn't be the same amount of time then with elves is a rather obvious assumption to make.
>>
>>35092473

Did REQM ever say she was dead? I remember her being gone, but nothing about it being suspicious.

>>
>>35092690
>Saying it was a honest mistake is still bullshit though.

But clearly it was an honest mistake.

Dad had a ditz moment and didn't think to ask about the growth rates of young Arachne.

Mom had a ditz moment and didn't tell him when he said he was going to explore some ruins for a few weeks.

It's the sort of thing mixed species couples should probably sit down and talk about, but clearly neither of them thought of it at the time.

They both goofed, but it was nothing malicious. Dad wasn't trying to abandon us. Mom wasn't trying to make him miss our childhood. They just made an honest mistake.

Although it feels a bit like we are monopolizing him on the first day.

Breakfast is a whirlwind of introductions and bragging, as each of your siblings tries to outdo the last. Sara waits smugly till the others are done before breaking out her journal, dragging your father into a discussion on magical research- He seems genuinely impressed with what she has so far,and they chatter back and forth between each bite of food, slinging words you've never heard before.

After breakfast, Mom brings out the ladder she made, leaving it curled and secured to the edge of the nest- Your brothers and sisters set plans for the day while Sheszka makes puppy eyes at you. You give her permission, and she hurls the ladder over the edge, scrambling up and down excitedly. Freedom is intoxicating, You guess?

You're still feeling a bit out of it when the food is packed away. Just tired. Interrupted sleep, exhaustion. So you can't put up much of a fight when your smallest sister latches onto your wrist, a manic grin splitting her face.

Erics joins you, and you all meander through the woods, heading towards the ruins clearing- Sara leading, your hand firmly clasped in hers, your father trailing behind, and Sheszka keeping pace through the woods around you. Occasionally, she closes in to ask permission to chase something, before running down one small animal or another.

You reach the meadow without issue, and Sara sets about recreating her research station- this time eyeing you with interest. Erics takes a seat next to her, still asking specifics of your magic.
"-So, you think she has the external mana control portion alone?"
"I can't think of anything else, yes. She has her own magic, but needs a mana donor to use it."
He eyes you across the field, brows knitting together as he thinks.

"What kind, if you don't mind?"
"Ah, earth magic. There's nothing special there- Its her talent at mana control that is unique, yes?"
He smiles as she flips pages, heading to the blank section.
"You haven't told me what it is that sets her apart, yet."
>>
>>35093348
Sara starts to giggle.
No.
Cackling is more accurate.
You have a sinking feeling that you know what comes next.

"Throw a spell at her!"
"I beg your pardon, young lady."
"Like, a fireball or a lightning bolt!"
"I'm not going to-"
"Haha! Here!"

Sara's constellation bursts into life above her, and at her gesture break off, screaming towards you- She's only using her summoned orbs though, not the spellcast- It's almost criminally easy for you to deflect them, popping them if you have enough time.

Your father gapes, expression aghast.
"She- did she just-"
"Yes! Right? It isn't possible! There's been noone to talk to about this, nobody gets it!"
"You can't just- Take control of someone else's spells. It doesn't work like that!"
"A necromancer tried to attack the ruins a few nights ago, yes? She was even snuffing out skeletons like that! Poof! No more spark!"

That catches his attention right quick.
"Skeletons? They're nearly enchanting- did they fade out when the mage?"
"No- we found one still active even a day after."
"This is fascinating!"
"I know!"

"Hellooooo! Do I get any say in this?!"
"NO" "NO"

_________________________________________________________

You spend the afternoon trying your hardest to no be scorched- your father opts out of tossing spells at you, but you're fairly certain it's one of Sara's chief hobbies by this point.
Sheszka turning up and giggling every once in a while isn't helping, either.

You do eventually manage to convince your sister that she has enough data for now- There won't be a sudden breakthrough is she just continues hucking burning balls of starpower at you. Much to her disappointment.

With the one sided game of dodgeball brought to a close, you settle down into something mildly less hazardous- Getting magical lessons from Erics.

You settle down next to Sara for a lecture on proper casting- The knowledge bit ends up mostly what your sister had to offer at her first lesson, with a bit of clarification.
"-Yes, it's completely possible to cast outside your element, just.. difficult. You still need a degree of compatibility to be able to utilize that kind of magic."
"So, Sara could learn other types, then?"
"Maybe. There's no guarantee of being able to use other elements. It all boils down to practice and study- You find what you can cast easily, what you struggle with, what comes naturally- That baseline is a good indicator of your elemental leanings."
"I'll practice with what I have, I think."
"I wanna throw Fire!"
"I would also appreciate it if you didn't teach her how to throw fire, yes."

Sara punches you in the shoulder.

You chat as you both practice, Sara igniting half the meadow with one hand, and supplying you with mana with the other. Your father periodically waves his hands, muttering a speedy chant and drenching the grass. There probably won't be much left of it by the end of the session. For your part, casting is growing even easier- and the sense of the ground below grows more pronounced when you focus on it.

You fire off spikes of differing sizes, raising a field of needles one minute, calling up a pillar of stone the next. It actually takes more mana to do the detailed work- You wind up having to focus on preventing the spell from expanding. The conversations stick to magic, though you manage to drag it onto a topic you've been wondering about.
>>
>>35094539
thread dropping off, might want to repost in new thread.
>>
>>35094539
"I have a question, yes?"
He nods, half distracted by Sara's latest brushfire.
"Would it be possible to craft some sort of focus for me? Like- a way I could hold mana?"
A small wave cuts across the field as he answers.
"Mm. It normally wouldn't be- but you can muss about other peoples magics. Maybe just an enchantment stuffed with as much mana as possible- but affixed loosely? It's something to think about. It'd have to be something that could be refilled..."

You look out at the field as your father muses, turning to your firebug sister.
"Sara?"
"Yes?"
"I'd like to try something."

She smiles.
"Yes?"
"Can you give me as much mana as I can hold?"
"I can do that, yes."

The feeling of power swells around you, deepening till you can hardly breathe; Sara backs away as you start to move.
You clench your fists, hissing out the chant as you will the power forward, through the stones and into the earth below- the headache you've come to associate with your magic twinges in your skull, but you ignore it as you bring your hands up, releasing your spell into the clearing.

The ground tears, massive plates smashing up from below, magma spewing around them- they're nearly as wide as the clearing itself, and you can feel the sulphurous heat even from where you're standing- Erics raises his eyebrows, and Sara cheers.

And now you're going to have to put it back.
