Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you learned to conceal an object with a simple illusion and finally convinced a baby dragon you're it's daddy.

You massage your eyes, trying to alleviate some of your annoyance with Chrys and Darzi. {Alright, Fulvia. I'm going to have a talk with those two. Apologies if I interrupted anything, Fulvia.} Her response is prompt. {Think nothing of it, I am merely assisting Thad in his research of vys.} You're about to ask who on Earth 'Thad' is, but then you recall that Skull Kid's first name is actually Thaddeus.

You decide not to comment on her choice of monikers, instead reaching through the mental connection provided to you by the brooches to touch the minds of Chrys and Darzi. You're confused for a moment, because all you catch are random bits of thoughts interspersed with vague memories and the occasional image. However, it doesn't take you long to realize you're essentially catching glimpses of their dreams. A sense of guilt and perhaps just a bit of paranoia slowly comes to pervade you as just how much you're breaching their privacy, but curiosity overcomes your conscience.

Darzi's dreams are troubled. You catch glimpses of battle, a dead solider in guard armor, a muscular man with a bald head and a gap-toothed grin. You see a spear driven through a woman's neck and then the flash of a ship's deck rolling violently in a storm. You get the sense that she's probably sleeping uneasily, likely due to the knowledge that she'll be risking her life in the next few days. Not really surprising, but entirely her own fault. On some level, you're glad she's having bad dreams if only because of the trouble she's caused you.

(1/3)
>>
1st for banished
>>
Chrys' dreams, by contrast, are rather peaceful. Well, that's not entirely true. You catch a glimpse of her husband's severed head being punted into a deep, wide chasm of some sort by a horned figure in a shawl you presume to be Chryssa, though you can't see her face. You catch the whispered lyrics of a song in a language you don't recognize, followed by the image of a distinguished older man hoisting a girl no older than ten onto his shoulders. The girl has little nubs protruding from the top of her head, and is missing a tooth. Finally you catch a brief glimpse of yourself, sliding a long knife into an ornately decorated sheath.

Deciding that you've completely trampled on their privacy enough for one night, you send out a message to both of them simultaneously. {By the merciful goddess Pani, what did you two do while I was meditating?} You make sure to transmit your thoughts... strongly, for lack of a better word. There isn't necessarily 'volume' when one uses the brooches to communicate, but a particularly focused thought comes across as 'louder' than others.

The random scatter of thoughts and images in both Darzi's and Chrys' minds collapse. Panic flares briefly in Darzi's mind, while Chrys merely responds coolly. {I supported my friend, as anyone ought to, in her decision to hunt down a vile band of thieves, murderers, kidnappers, and rapist.} There was just the slightest hint of bite to Chrys' thoughts, a sort of vague disapproval, but you ignore it.

(2/3)
>>
Darzi is much less coherent. {Didn't do nothin'. Fuckin'... their fault. Just tryin' to help out s'all. Not me.} You wait, the confusing mass of thought and feeling that is Darzi's mind slowly pulling itself together into a semi-coherent whole. The next time she reaches out to you, it's significantly more intelligible. {Despite all that's happened I'm still a loyal subject of the Shah. If he's been kidnapped, it's my duty to hunt down his kidnappers and deliver them justice. Besides, only after I volunteered did anyone else step forward. If I hadn't stepped forward then who knows if anyone would've volunteered for the mission.}

>Call Chrys out on blindly following her friend on a suicide mission.
>Call Darzi out on volunteering for a suicide mission in the name of the man who banished you.
>Call Darzi out on volunteering for a suicide mission based solely on a sense of moral obligation.

Here’s a Grandmaster idea.
First we drain our blood and replenish ourselves over and over again while using the drained blood to freeze into ice figures. Each figure will be different. Some will be smaller and faster, others larger and sturdier, they will all have different weapon and weapon combos. Each one will be unique. We create as many of these as we reasonably can, I’m guessing 3000-5000 as Soma said that it would require thousands. Then we have them fight each other in a bracketed tournament. It will take serious control and thinking to actually have that many in depth fights going on while still maintaining them frozen. As the tournament progresses the massive amounts of control we have been using will get further and further refined and the fights more and more intense and interactive between the frozen blood figures.

This method has Healing in it via the sheer amount of blood we have to regenerate.
It has Water control obviously and works both on our multitasking and our precise control.
Lastly it provides the added bonus of giving us some seriously valuable combat experience just by how many and how diverse of fights he will be pulling off while meditating.
Soma said that creating the figures would take a couple of days. After that I imagine that the tournament wouldn’t take longer than 2-3 weeks if we kept the brackets constantly running.
Also minimal risk as the only danger we put our self in is in the creation phase and it’s pretty minor.
Soma confirmed it would work. I believe it is the most balanced, most beneficial, least risky, and one of the faster ways.
As a last little side note. If we happen to be near a city when we do this we can make it into games. Have the first couple days be free admissions due to the sheer amount of fights. But as it starts to narrow down we will start charging people for admission. Would be great entertainment.

Man, that sounds metal as fuck anon.
Though I still like the burning alive option you've got me thinking about blood figurine wars.
>>
>>35094306
After that we can pitch the idea to Demetrios.
>>
>>35094343
Was mainly trying to figure out something that incorporated both Water control and Healing. The added bonus of fightan experience got thrown in there from thinking of storming our sand castle against our party with figures.
>>
Blood figurine war will accomplish like 4 things at once - water control, healing, making SIEGE popular and the cold hard cash. I'm also inclined to believe the next best option which in my opinion is burning ourselves alive and regenerating is one of the options that might tax our sanity somewhat, so right now I'm for the wargames.
>>
>>35094306
Mate, I don't think you realize how much time drawing and regenerating that much blood would take.

I don't think this will even be a thing. Soma said if we play our cards right we can stay in the temple afterwards so there's gotta be a way to avoid it.
>>
>>35094651
>Implying we can't kill the Shah and stay in the temple.
>>
>>35094625
I think reading the book on the fire techniques counts as the vys we get for learning about that. Learning new things from books gives us vys. Learning how to do things doesn't unless we make up the technique.
>>
>>35094651
Of course, but all things have their cost. The cloak has made its cost known. Do you wanna lose the cloak, anon?
When I was rustling about fate last thread I said so with the idea that there's absolutely a way to not kill the Shah, and that's to give our use of the cloak.
I don't really wanna. I like our cloak. I like Ricky. I like being a portable bank.
>>
>>35094701
That has no base in absolutely anything except your shadowruns and attempts at philosophy.
>>
So yall know that we can probably pull off the Liquid fire thing that sticks to people now. Soma said so.

Also an idea for Fire.

Thinking how we manipulate the heat of a certain area when we create illusions. Could we do the same thing but just crank the heat up to the point where it's burning or it just bursts into flame? Would this make us able to just make someones head burst into flame? Or cook their brain inside their skull? Or would this require a Meta? Most likely a new Meta that we have not yet seen. one that allows us to just have a spell appear at a certain point rather than shoot it like ranged or beam it like beam.

You search your thoughts for something to mentally shout at them for. Some tidbit of information you can grab hold of and hark on without making yourself a hypocrite. You quickly come to realize that they've done nothing you yourself have not done. Sure, it's in a different form. Volunteering to do something stupid instead of simply doing something stupid. However, when you really get into the details you've leaped recklessly into situations far beyond your level of competence, you've made idiotic, spur of the moment decisions, you've leapt into danger based solely on curiosity.

In the end you simply sigh, shaking your head. {That was stupid. That was really stupid.} Darzi begins to protest, but you cut her off. {I know, I'm not one to judge. I am, after all, literally insane. I charged head first into a dragon's nest and walked through a mysterious portal into another dimension. Tried to intimidate some low level thug for no real reason and botched the attempt wonderfully. That still doesn't change the fact that you two made a bad decision.}

There is a brief silence before you hear Darzi's voice echo through your mind. {I'll admit, what we did may not have been wise even if it was right, but what would you have us do? We're committed. We cannot simply back out after having volunteered, unless you suggest we flee the temple.} The scorn which enters her thoughts as she delivers the last line suggest she doesn't consider that a serious option.

>You suggest that both of them buckle down and start improving their grasp of water magic.

No, I've been sure for a while that the cost of the cloak was listening to that thing that visited us in our dreams, because it's the only thing that seems related to the items effects and the denizens of the void.

Neither shadowruns or philosophy. Though nothing before was philosophy anyways, don't really get where you came up with that.

Well blast is basically gathering a lot of vys and releasing it at once. I'm thinking we could combine manipulate ranged with fire and blast and keep from discharging the spell until it's in a critical stage for a sort of burst effect like you said. Ranged plus manipulate to make like a thread or tube of vys from us to the target so we can charge it up from a distance and the other two for the boom part.

Thread 29

>You permit it entrance, and for a brief moment the veil of reality is torn asunder. You are offered a glimpse into the world beyond yours, into that twisted realm of magic where only ones own power determines the methods and processes by which the world works. Stepping through the tear is a figure from a nightmare. A four armed, winged skeleton with the skull of a stag. The image of death itself.

>It descends towards you from on high, or perhaps ascends. Up and down are irrelevant within this realm of nothing. This in-between place. You do not hear it speak so much as you feel its words worming their way into your mind, permeating through you rather than carrying to you.

So here’s my observation/idea on the Elements.

Each element seems to have two different parts to it, the Elemental side and the Affect side (IE: Water Control and Healing, Nature/Plant Control and Extrasensory) My theory is that the elements aren’t pair by elements but they all aid each other by different parts. I don’t have them all mapped out and I may be wrong but ehh just info dumping.

The Mental side of Metal seems like it would go well with the Extrasensory side of Nature.

The Nature Control goes well with Healing ((re)growth of tissue)

The fortifying side of Metal goes well with the Earth Manipulation.

The Fire Control side of Fire still seems up in the air but it might work well with Water Manipulation

The Illusion side of Fire seems like it might benefit from the Extrasensory side of Nature

Not sure on the other side of Earth, the one that carves and can disintegrate, might work with the burninating side of Fire.

Wouldn't even have to use bombs. Just light the fuses they keep there with fire magic. Flee by just leaving through the bottom of the ship to avoid the blast. Rinse & repeat.

You shake your head slowly, even though you realize they can't see the gesture. {My advice is thus, in the day or so you have left before the arrival of the Shah's fleet focus on improving your abilities in and understanding of water magic. Frankly, it's the only chance you have of performing the mission with anything approaching competence.} You pause for a moment, to let your advice sink in. {Additionally, to facilitate your rapid advancement, I offer my services as a tutor. I shall also allow you to choose from any of the armors, weapons, and other gear that I have in my cloak to perform your mission.}

Chrys speaks up before Darzi gets a chance. {We accept. Where shall we meet you to begin training?} Darzi starts as if to protest, but the thought is cut off. You feel your connection to both of them forcefully severed, and you're left more or less twiddling your thumbs for what seems like several minutes before the connection is once more established. It is once again Chrys who speaks. {Apologies, Darzi took issue with the idea of accepting your offer when it may deprive you of gear you yourself need.}

You somehow get the impression that isn't the full story, but you're not going to bring it up. {I will come and collect you in a moment, this conversation has reminded me that I have yet to distribute a brooch to Skull Kid, and it is high time that I took care of that.} There is no response, rather the connection simply dies and you're once again left with your own thoughts. You're leaned against the wall adjacent to the library goal. You were so close, so close to just relaxing and reading.

With a heavy sigh you begin the short trek through the temple. Entering the wing where you and your companions are housed, you find Chrys' door open and her room vacant. Presumably she's joined with Darzi to discuss their coming mission, or perhaps training. You pass by Darzi's door to instead stop in front of Skull Kid's door. You knock twice, but there's no answer. Annoyed, you instead cross the hall to Fulvia's door.

This time when you knock the door swings open after a moment, and you find Skull Kid standing before you, his helmet raised to reveal his wire-filled eye sockets. “Yo, Mik. What's up?” You respond only by reaching into your cloak and fishing out your final brooch. “What's with the clasp?”

You hold out your hand. “Give me your hand.” He looks leans back, a wary look on his face. “What for?” You sigh, popping open the communication brooch so the sharp needle point is exposed. You quickly prick your finger, drawing forth a bead of blood before healing the small wound with barely a thought. “This device allows us to communicate mentally. It's how myself and the rest of the party, save Mortia of course, have been communicating this entire time. I need a sample of your blood to attune it to the network”

He hesitantly extends his hand towards you. “So, wait. You guys have been using telepathy this entire time?” You quickly stab his finger with the brooch, and he jerks his hand back. You heal the wound before he even has time to get a look at it, which seems to make him uncomfortable for some odd reason. That done, you fasten the brooch to the lapel of his weird jacket garment.
(2/3 or 4)
>>
You feel a new 'branch' added to that weird button at the back of your mind. You reach towards it, feeling the presence of a foreign mind. It's... strange. You'd even go so far as to describe it as alien. Unlike Fulvia, you actually feel a mind there. It's not just an entity with a sort of vague consciousness. However, it's not wholly human either. There is an odd interference, like the buzzing of insect wings, that seems to wax and wane in a rhythmic, predictable pattern. {Testing, testing. Can you hear me?}

There is a long pause before Skull Kid eventually responds. {Holy shit, Mik! This is amazing! Actual telepathy, all because if a little fuckin' thing like a brooch! I mean, you know. There were mutants back home that could pull off this kind of thing but they were twisted monsters. You have no idea how amazing this is for me. Seriously, I always wanted-} He rambles on excitedly for quite a while, you sort of slowly and unconsciously tune him out.

Eventually his stream of words is cut off and he glances over his shoulder, presumably towards Fulvia. “God damn, this is amazing. Look, Mikhael. Thank you so much. I really mean that. I need to get back to my research though. Fulvia has been walking me through these Rhynian notes. Did you know they once detached a man's head and kept it alive through magical means for years? Sick, twisted stuff. Fascinating though.”

(3/4)
>>
You wave him off. “Have fun, and don't hurt yourself doing... whatever it is you do.” You smirks, and the two of you part ways. You make your way over to Darzi's door and knock. The door is jerked open by Darzi, who looks tired and a little out of it but determined. “So where are we going? The arena, meditation chamber, library...?”

>Grab Profectus for this too. He doesn't deserve to sleep.
>You ought to head to the library, it offers you the most materials to work with.

Ughh, I meant to say "And a Water Vatis?" It kinda took us a while to attain Mastery in Water. And we only got one vys out of it. Also, her character sheet classifies her as a "Ameteur" Vatis, so that doesn't bode well for her efficiency. Reading up on books like " A Treatise on Advanced Water Magic by Master Yusef " should help with that.

We do, and also pre-vatis levels of mastery are piss easy if you've got training and are also a rhythian experiment.
>>
>>35097108
So....did'ja apply boosting? Or is that last roll too much for boosting to have any effect?

Lastly, can we try again morning off the battle? After our mates have a good night sleep? I want to get Chryssa at least one meta-magic effect and Darzi the last insight.

It was an unborn baby. Unborn. That's like, the opposite of ancient.

It was +6, then +4, then +2, then no bonus. Get it right.

Now that I think about it learning fire magic by meditating close to the mind of a tutoring Adult dragon would grant a pretty significant bonus, wouldn't it?

We need to have a talk with her, we know that the Surya chosen thing" race didn't live long, so it might be good to tell her to watch out and keep her health in top shape

It is at this point you learn that Mik was a very lazy student. And that our teacher also spent a lot of time teaching us moral lessons such as "if you can swim back to shore you can live," which is something even Disney couldn't teach to kids.

There's also the fact that a Vatis of one year is not nearly as competent as a Vatis at twenty. The Varistha turned GM, but it was only years later until he got super good at shit like point defense.
>>
Y'know if Chrys, Darzi and Profectus ever question our meditation methods we should just use all this greentext as to the methods our own master used to teach us, and then ask if they really don't like us stabbing ourselves as an alternative.
>>
Seems like group meditation's the way to powerlevel people, it doesn't (seems to) make them great at controling their magics though so they'd need to practice/med a lot to fine tune.
Maybe we should teach them some quick easy meta too?

Extremes are easy to come up with on the spot
>>
You spare a glance towards Profectus' door before deciding against dragging him along. He only just meditated, and seemed to be quite focused on his task. You'll reward his good behavior by allowing him to actually sleep. Instead you turn your attention once more to Darzi. “Lets head for the meditation chamber. I have a method in mind I think would benefit from peaceful surroundings and an absorbent floor.”

Darzi looks wary, but Chrys simply nods. The three of you proceed down the halls towards the meditation chamber. On the way, you strike up idle conversation. “You know, I'm going to be a father.” You deliver the line casually, without context. Chrys responds immediately, her tone outright cold. “Who is the mother? I was unaware you were married.” Darzi seems similarly curious, though she doesn't voice her curiosity. Presumably she's waiting for you to explain.

With a shit-eating grin you explain “Well, I'm not entirely sure who the mother is but I think it's a ancient dragon living thousands of feet beneath the surface of the Earth. The child isn't born yet, but it already spoke its first words earlier today. It called me 'Papa'. Can you believe that? They grow up so fast.” You really are excited about seeing the egg hatch now. It's going to be your kid! Your dragon! You can't help but wonder if it will be a boy or a girl.

Chrys visibly relaxes, while Darzi ask after a moment's thought. “Aren't you worried the mother will come looking for it? What if this thing pops out of the egg unable to control its fire breath, and just sets everything it sees on fire? Where are you going to keep it? That egg is pretty big.”

(1/6 or 7)
>>
>>35099275
How extreme was the cheese?
>>
>>35099291
Dangerously cheesy.
>>
You shrug in response. “I mean, I'm not worried. The spot where I found the egg was sort of out of the way and it was buried under rock, plus the eggs inside the nest were far, far larger. I get the feeling my little guy, or girl, was abandoned to the elements to die. Besides, the mother lives at the bottom of the Longian Mine. It ought to take her a while to reach the surface.” You wave a hand dismissively. “As for the rest of your questions, I intend to simply figure things out as I go along. Isn't that essentially what fatherhood is about?”

You take up position at the front of the meditation chamber, sitting down and assuming a stiff pose, back straight and shoulders back. The same sort of domineering posture your master always used to use when he was getting ready to tell you something important. “Now then, your lesson for today will be based on healing. I don't want either of you keeling over due to a single gunshot wound or sword through the gut.” You reach into your cloak, withdrawing your ornate, curved dagger. “First thing first, you'll need an injured person to heal.”

Darzi swallows nervously, she's seen the sort of things your master put you through and has some vague idea of what to expect. Chrys merely nods. However, that changes when you plunge the dagger into your abdomen and violently rip it to the side, disemboweling yourself gruesomely right in front of them. You glance down as all manner of organs spill across your lap. You're seriously kind of amazed that it all fit inside you. Just think, if you were a few years younger a sight like this would probably horrify you. Then again, a few years ago you'd still feel pain. At your current level you don't really feel anything beyond a vague ache.
(2/6-7)
>>
>>35099275
And? The point was retarded. The extremes you were equating marriage to are dysfunctional as fuck

Our culture got us banished.
>>
You draw the knife out of your abdomen and stab yourself repeatedly in the chest, Chrys appearing on the edge of tears, staring on in open-mouthed horror while Darzi merely looks confused and disgusted. With your lungs punctured in several places and with blood pouring from your body you smile charmingly to your two apprentices. “You'd best hurry.” It's a struggle to speak, but you manage. “I won't last long.”

Chrys seems duly motivated, she slips quickly into a trance and begins struggling to channel vys towards you. Her progress is slow, and inefficient. She seems to be severely panicked. Once Chrys is in her trance, Darzi merely looks at you and shakes her head slowly. “Not funny, Mik. Scaring her like that.” Fortunately, she doesn't lecture you at length on how awful you are. Instead she merely slips into her meditative trance and begins channeling water magic into your wounds, knitting them together slowly.

Chrys slowly calms herself and begins channeling her vys smoothly, instead of in erratic, barely guided burst. You end up needing to use some of your own vys to regenerate some of your lost blood, because you really did do a number on yourself. You were feeling faint, and you were getting awfully pale by Samjan standards. You'll need to remind them to pay attention to blood loss the next time you do this.

After a few hours of meditation you find yourself fully healed. Chrys' eyes snap open and she flies at you, at first you think it's so she can pummel you into a fine paste, thus saving you the effort of injuring yourself. However, instead of beating you senseless she wraps her arms tightly around your neck, squeezing perhaps just a bit too tight. “Do not do that again without warning! I was terrified! You could have seriously hurt yourself!”

Sima, can we get some official info regarding Mik's stance on polygamy, or would you rather nor associate with this shitstorm? Een if he is okay with them, it wouldn't mean we'd 100% go for a harem end, of course. Just for context. And to hopefully at least somewhat subdue this shitstorm.
>>
>>35099311
To be fair, our culture kind of a shit for letting us get banished because our Shah was all up into nepotism
>>
>>35099310
You mean Mikhails sides.
>>
You feel a twinge of guilt, because that actually was kind of a dickish thing to do. You wrap your arms around her, patting her on the back as comfortingly as you can manage while she chokes the life out of you. “Relax, Chrys! Relax! I was never in any real danger. I could've healed myself at any time, just fine.” You notice Darzi giving you a smug look out of the corner of your eye, but ignore her.

Chrys clings to your neck for a short while longer before letting you go and resuming her original position in front of you. She wipes the corners of her eyes and clears her throat before nodding. “Yes... well. I still do not like that you simply disemboweled yourself without warning.” She's not meeting your eyes, instead focusing on the floor. “I apologize for my outburst. Please don't do it again.”

You wave her off dismissively. “Don't worry about it. This time I'm going to slit my own throat. Make sure to focus on trying to stop the bleeding, or else I'll die.” You drag the knife blade across your neck, blood pouring out of the wound. Wow, you really dug it in deep. You felt the blade scrape against bone. Darzi simply sighs and slips into her trance, but Chrys shoots you a worried look before entering her's as well.

Darzi takes care of the bleeding. Instead of just staunching the blood flow, she uses water magic to take the place of the damaged veins and arteries. Chrys focuses on healing the wound itself, starting with the blood vessels and moving on to the muscles, esophagus, and larynx. This time she takes it slower instead of rushing to patch up your mutilated body. However, neither of them are particularly efficient. It's almost like they're trying to physically drag the wound shut and then heal you, instead of simply funneling vys into the wound and letting your body do the rest.

So the principle reason you think harems are shit is because you grew up in societies where its taboo? Or because it happens in every quest with a rom-com element and it peeves you? You lot make for some poor roleplayers.

Look I don't give a fuck about marrying or fucking NPC's in this quest. The only reason I'd go along with it is because it's what Mik would do or it makes for interesting plot. And from what I can see, it's completely normal for a Samja of considerable means to marry multiple times. It's just what happens in this setting.

>>35099306
I'm pointing out how stupid it is that if we do something once, we might as well do it more than once is, just because you can, isn't a reason to do something
>>
After spending several hours with your throat gaping open for the world to see you're finally healed fully once again. Darzi's eyes snap open, and she frowns. “Can we not do that a third time? I don't think Chrys can take another episode like that, and I don't think either of us will make much more progress in healing magic after what we've already 'learned'-” You can practically hear the air quotes. “-so far.” Chrys refuses comment, instead simply snuffling and wiping her eyes on her sleeve.

You feel an oddly persistent pain in your chest, and a lump forms in your throat. You ignore both issues as best you can. “Very well! A siege match.” By this point, several other vatis have filtered into the meditation chamber. Some seem to be going through their normal routines, some are performing Marsala Ve forms. Others are watching your tutoring session with obvious curiosity. Darzi sighs in relief, while Chrys perks up. You note that her eyes are awfully red. Hopefully your method is at least working, Chrys certainly seems to be more competent than when she started, but you can't really tell with Darzi. “You two know the rules by now, yes?”

Darzi nods brusquely, while Chrys seems to finally pull herself together enough to nod as well. You clap your hands together. “Great, how about a... five hundred point game? That ought to be appropriate for your level.” Darzi begins to create figurines, quickly slipping into a trance so she can focus. Chrys takes a few deep breaths before doing the same. You take a moment to get a look at each of their figurines, noting how simple they are in comparison to the sorts of figures you usually make. Huh, you wonder if you could create really, really detailed miniatures and make them something like... tournament standard... then you could even force less experienced Vatis to buy your figures.

You set about sculpting the terrain. You take advantage of the abundance of sand to craft a vast lake, at the center of which is a small island with a castle constructed on it. There is only a single route into the castle that doesn't include swimming, a route that zigzags beneath the water and can be attacked at all times by archers on the walls. Darzi notices this, and quickly seizes the castle. Seems like she'll be on the defensive, while Chrys will be attacking.

The battle starts off simply enough, Chrys sends a few probing attacks against the walls and loses a number of troops without gaining any ground. She tries a massed charge, but that too backfires. She makes it halfway across the lake and then Darzi musters her forces from inside the walls, each of them wielding a long spear, and they board the causeway to repell the besiegers. This goes predictably, the long spears of Darzi's troops allowing them to beat back the mostly sword-wielding forces of Chryssa's army. However, when one of her figures falls into the lack and floats to the top, something seems to click for Chrys.

Instead of merely attacking from the front, Darzi swings her army around to the opposite end of the lake and her forces form up into teams. They lash themselves together arm-to arm and legs to shoulders, forming rafts. It's... frankly it's ridiculous. This should probably be against the rules. However, it works. She floats her army across to the relatively undefended rear of the castle and, as Darzi's spearmen rush around the narrow edge of the island the castle sits on to reach her, they're slowly beaten back. It takes several hours, but eventually the battle is won by attrition, Chrys coming out on top.

Darzi's eyes snap open first. “Cheater! There is no way that tactic would've worked in reality! The vast majority of your men would've drowned and I could've wiped out the survivors effortlessly!” Chrys responds far more calmly. “There are no rules regarding floating rafts across a barrier, and these figurines are not people. If anything, I would argue that being able to float atop water ought to be a feature of a water army.”

You have to admit, you'd probably tend to side with Darzi on this. That was just silly. However, Chrys is technically correct. You didn't lay down any rules regarding forming structures from figurines. There wasn't anything at stake for this match, but Darzi seems pretty irrationally upset about it, and she's looking to you to arbitrate.

You hold up your hands placatingly. “Relax, Darzi. Remember, this is at its core a game. It's supposed to be fun, and ideally relaxing.” She glares at you for a moment, but takes a deep breath and lets out a long sigh. Once she appears to have collected herself you continue. “I will give the victory for this match to Chrys, but in the future such tactics will be against the rules.”

Darzi mutters a curse in Samjan, while Chrys merely nods. You wave a hand and in a moment the battlefield and the figurines vanish. “By the way, you're both really, really wasteful when you cast spells. I mean, with just the amount of vys you wasted I could've performed any of the task I assigned you. Now, I'll admit you performed the task admirably, but going forward in your own meditations strive to do more with less.”

Darzi nods seriously, but Chrys gives you a vaguely confused look. “Strive to do more with less? Is that not a paradox? The amount of vys put in should always result in a proportional outcome...” That's perhaps one of the earliest assumptions every apprentice makes. You're frankly a little amazed she's managed to progress so far in such a short amount of time, but her lack of context and theoretical knowledge really shows.

You shake your head, pushing yourself to your feet. “That's incorrect, actually. There are a plethora of effects and metamagics that produce a disproportionately small or disproportionately large result. Take blast, for instance-” Your two apprentices stand and begin to follow you out of the meditation chamber. It's rather crowded at this hour, so it's probably best to continue this conversation elsewhere. “-Putting in just a small amount of vys produces a huge result. Then look at, say, speed and slow. Both require far more vys to create a noticeable effect than spells at similar levels of complexity.” You shrug as you step through the doorway into the hall beyond, starting to simply meander about aimlessly. “It's simply the nature of magic, you can't expect it to follow a mathematical logic, even though many try to force it into that mold.”

Your lecture concluded, you take a moment to inspect your surroundings. You're standing just beside the courtyard, sunlight streaming down from far above. Judging from the sundial in the courtyard, it's roughly three hours past high noon. Wow, you spent most of the day toiling away in that tiny little sand-floored room. Upon this realization, your stomach growls loudly.

You glance around, the temple is fairly empty at the moment. Now is as good a time enact your master plan as any. “I think I'll slip into the village to buy some last minute supplies. Why don't you two get some rest, and then when I get back you can pick out some gear from my cloak to take with you?”

Darzi doesn't seem completely happy with this solution, you really have no idea why she's so reluctant to take some gear from you. It's not like you lack for weapons and armor. Chrys speaks before she can voice dissent. “Very well, we will see you upon your return.” With that, the two of them wander off, presumably towards their respective rooms. You wait until they're out of sight before slipping off yourself in the direction of the gardens.

You make your way swiftly through the gardens and into the tunnels. It isn't long before you're scaling the rope ladder into the sitting room of the temple fortress, surrounded on all sides by lush carpets and inviting pillows. Fortunately the room is empty, as is usually the case. You wonder why this room gets so little use... but dismiss the thought as you close the hatch behind you and make for the exit.

The two guards standing to either side of the doorway nearly jump out of their armor. One of them calls out, but he's cut off before he finishes. You're too focused on the task before you, and navigating the maze of tents that has erected itself in the fortress courtyard, to really notice.

The gates swing open for you without questions. You're glad that the guards manning the gates are at least temple guards. They were a tad annoying at first, as all guards seem to be, but they've done right by you. You make your way through the small village, noting that the inn has been cleaned up and the broken windows boarded, until you get to the rocky shore that separates the Apothecary's hut from the rest of the village. Hopping from one stepstone to the next is a bit of an acrobatic challenge, but you manage it without too much difficulty. You don't even slip into the shallow waters below or crack your head open on a rock.

Finally, you hop off of the last rock and land on the wooden deck of the old Samjan woman's hut. A variety of herbs are hanging across the doorway, herbs you don't recognize from your twenty six years of life in Pidjata. There is also a strange, vaguely-skull shaped bundle of desiccated bandages sitting in a rocking chair next to the door. You're... not really sure why that might be there. Regardless, you knock three times and a friendly voice calls out from inside. “Door's open! Come in, come in!”

You push the door open, and see a fire blazing away in the furnace. You notice she's burning green leaves and wet logs, and the humidity in the room is just absolutely oppressive. Ghada, the apothecary, sits at her table in the same garb you saw her in last time, thick black robes with a strange feathered head ornament. You'd think it would be unbearably hot, but she hardly seems affected. “Oh! Mikhael! How nice to see you again. Don't you just look like a fierce little blood soaked warrior.” You glance down at yourself, realizing you never washed the blood out of your clothes. Was that why the guards were so freaked out? That makes a lot more sense

With just a touch of water magic you extract the blood from your garment and deposit it outside. She smirks, and gestures to the seat across from her. She seems to be using a mortar and pestel to grind some sort of foul smelling gunk together. Come to think of it, it sort of smells like that herbal paste you swallowed before healing Darzi. You sit down across from the elderly white-haired widow and smile as charmingly as you can manage under the circumstances. “A pleasure to see you again, Ghada.” She waves you off. “Oh please, a pleasure! I'm sure you've got better things to do than make small talk with an old woman. What can I get you?”

Thanks Soma.

Also, I noticed that traditionally Monks are supposed to ask the Varistha before they leave the temple, yet we've been in and out without asking him since after the first two times.

Is that getting him agitated?

I should work, in theory, if everything goes well.

>>35101417
You imitating him, hands down. Also the success. Your master was/is a pervert but you can't be certain he'd be okay with you blatantly dating a non-samja that he doesn't find attractive.

Yikes, kinda glad I got off that bandwagon now. Or maybe not. What's happening over there anyway?

Well....if you must know....MC's girlfriend had an opponent disarm her boyfriend in a very visceral and literal manner. The anime is called "Shiki." I got the aspect ratio of the webm wrong, as wel as some other things so the most gruesome part got cut off. Said part involved Pinky over there getting her head popped like a cherry. Uhh....the tears and screaming are a bit offputting. -10/10, would not work with again.
