The glow gently illuminates her as she slowly lowers her hands. Within a few seconds, she has completely changed every article of clothing on her body to her newest battle outfit. The transistion being so seamless that you're not entirely sure at what point they appeared on her.

Louise is anxious from everyone staring at her, "S-so what do you think?"

You are Jack Albator, duplicitous daredevil, genius adventurer, and also extremely tired and worn out. You've had your fill over the last few days of work. It's almost as if everyone inside this stupid cat country known as Gallete is either incompetent, inept, or completely indifferent about anyone except themselves.
Frankly, you're just sick of dealing with them.

Hopefully, after today, it will be up to the young hero in front of you to protect Gallete. Speaking of which, Axel just walked into the back and brought out a rapier for her to use.

"Here you go, kid. Try be careful, it's sharp at the end." Axel says, trying to steady it in her hands.
"Uum. Thanks?"

She waves it around in the air several times as Axel jumps back. Clearly, she wasn't taught safety while handling it.
"It's... kind of heavy."
"I thought you said you had training with this, Lass. Did you use a sword that looked like this or something different?"

"It was a lot shorter, for one. Do you have a shorter one?"

Axel sighs as he grabs a set of keys from a ring. "Kid, on the battlefield; reach and speed are everything. Just try using this one."

You think you have everything you need to train with for the hour or so before you depart back to Biscotti. Is there anything else you want to try training her with?

>Mace, or something blunt. She should be a lot stronger here, plus she doesn't seem to have much respect for the points on her weapons.
>Another type of sword, it's good to diversify.

You get a few other things from the shelves that you think she might have fun trying. At least things that she needs to try before she makes any kind of judgement on it.

With that in mind, you ask Axel to fetch something like the magic, ringed wand that Aligot uses. As well as grabbing a musket and a flintlock from the shelves; which you think every kid needs to learn how to use.

"Is that it?" Axel says, carrying a wand and her rapier in hand.
"Not quite, I have another idea." You feel an evil smile creeping across your face.

You're already well aware that she should have the strength of 20 men. The only person who doesn't know that is probably herself. Walking to where Axel was sorting the large-class weapons earlier; you grab the biggest axe and sling it over your shoulder.

Even with your strength, you can still feel the weight and mass behind the massive instrument.

Axel only stares back at you like you're insane.
"Seriously?"
"Seriously." Is all you say back, with a big obnoxious grin.

You don't want to admit it, but the idea has crossed your mind to try it out yourself a time or two. She might be particularly lucky with things that are as large as she is. There's really only one way to be sure.

Your group walks out down the hallway and into the courtyard. Knights and guards spar and chat amongst themselves while having their lunches and preparing for their afternoon shifts.

One of those knights, who has blonde hair and a set of pointed ears, notices your group walking into the yard and starts approaching.
Good! She needs to follow up on the little talk she had with the hero, anyway.

Louise is the second one to notice her, she puts a big smile on her face as she runs over to Odelle and grabs the blonde knight around her waist into a hug.

Odelle bursts into laughter at the gesture, "Louise! That is such a nice outfit!"
"Ah~ Odelle." She tightens her hug, "I'm feeling so much better today, I can't begin to tell you-"

The girls laugh and chatter, most of which you tune out almost immediately, as you approach an empty training lot. You set down the massive axe and her musket as Axel tries fumbling with some of the rings on the wand.

"So what are you boys doing?" Odelle says, sitting on a bench with Louise in her lap.
"Well Lass, I'm leaving today, so I wanted to get some weapon training in with her before I left. What are you doing out here?"

She ignores your question and instead eyes the massive axe and the musket that you've set down onto another bench.
"..You're going to make her use a weapon? Seriously!?"
In her lap, Louise squirms as Odelle tightens the vice-grip hug around the young girl.

>"Yes! I am! And I think you should encourage it, too."
>"If you don't watch, it might not hurt you."
>"Aye, Want to help?"

You're not sure what to say about this, except one thing.
"Aye, want to help?"
"She's just a little girl! You're not going to make her use those things, are you!?"

You want to say something to that, but then you remember that this means Odelle has taken your advice about being her friend completely to heart.
"..She's really grown on you, hasn't she?"

Odelle's face lightly blushes, but she quickly snaps back;
"Yes! And I think you're being too hard on her!"
"All the more reason to help, Lass. You should join in on the training so you can help her in my absence. Got any better suggestions?"

She looks down at Louise, who has managed to slip her grasp and returned her hug.
"No.. I really don't."
"Great! Let's get started. Louise?"

"Um?"
"Why don't you stand up and try something for me."

She stands up and lets her legs pop as she does so. Odelle pats down her suit and tries to get it looking nice and tidy.
You didn't say it, but you are really relieved that she was able to find someone that dotes on her as much as Odelle does.

"Now, from your standing position, try jumping as hard as you can."
"Jumping?"
"Yar, just bend your knees, put a little push into your ankles, and try a little hop."

She bends her legs, starts putting pressure into her ankles.
Then you suddenly remember something, if strength and stamina in this world is proportional to how much you had previously; what does that mean for a kid who was relatively in-shape and weighs half of what you do?

You quickly get your answer as she springs upward, with a "KYAAAAAAaaaaaaaaa-!". Her tiny form becoming nearly invisible against the backdrop of the blue sky.

"LOUISE!" Odelle shrieks as she puts her catlike reflexes to work.

You weren't entirely sure how she became knight, most of what she has done involved bumbling since you got here.
Now, you got your answer.

Before either you or Axel could even clear half of the training courtyard, she had already dashed clean to the other side.
With a yell and a mighty leap, Odelle's jump easily clears the height of the barracks.

Both Odelle and Louise are tiny dots in the sky at this point. Except, by virtue of Odelle's quick actions, her jump arc intersects with Louise's helplessly falling body. They both land safely several courtyards over.

Odelle is carrying Louise in her arms on their return. Louise buries her face in Odelle's chest while Odelle sports a very angry glare.

"JACK! How could you!? YOU KNEW THAT WOULD HAPPEN, DIDN'T YOU?"

She looks down at Louise, "-a jerk, that's what you are."
"That is literally how I was introduced to my new strength, Lass. The landings just sting a bit, no need to get catty about it."

Odelle growls as she sets Louise down. Even though she really doesn't seem like she wants to bet let down. She continues to hold onto Odelle's waist.
"Oh come on, Lasses, I only realized that would after right AFTER I said to do it. See? This has all been a living and learning experience for the both of us." You go to rub Louise's head, but Odelle lightly slaps your hand away.

You spring up and spin around toward the weapons, "Well! Since we're off to a jumping start, let's get some of these things and see how you do with them!"
You pick up the rapier and turn to Louise, who is slowly letting go of Odelle.
"Come on, let's try skewering a few of these training dummies."

"Um." she says, taking the rapier in hand. She studders slightly as she eyes the other large, nefarious weapons leaning against the bench.

You are still Jack Albator, exhausted training partner and person who feels his merits are not being properly recognized.

But still, you're happy that she's at least healthy enough to receive this training. Maybe she doesn't realize how close she was to death, but you're much happier with her being alive than otherwise.

"Okay Lass, run those dummies through. Don't let the weight of the sword intimidate you."

She starts swiping and cutting the edges of the dummy like she's wielding a feather duster. It's kind of odd that she doesn't stab more, except-
"Lass, what are you doing?"
"Um, fencing?"

That's why, she's acting as if her opponents are also holding a fencing sword. Each slash and swipe would count as a point, you think.

"Lass, try stabbing a some more, run them through! Don't be nervous."
"Um."

Again, she starts slashing and cutting, but never really stabbing the dummies. Axel stops her several times to adjust her form slightly, but it's always the same slashing and cutting.
"Lass, what's the problem? Why aren't you laying into it?"

She looks down at her outfit, and folds her hands.
"I was always told not to do that because I might hurt someone."

That-
"Oh! Argh, I see. Damn it, damn it, I forgot to tell you the most important part about this place."

"You can't get hurt, Lass."
"W-what?"

This is going to be a lot harder to explain.

"You can jump really high and run really fast, right? You can't get hurt either. It just rips your clothes a little."

You take your revolver out of the holster.
"Permit me to demonstrate!"

You raise it up at Odelle, who appears to have spaced out. Several shots leave the revolver and impact her chestplate.
Tink, tink, tink, CRACK!

The entire metal husk breaks away from her chest, leaving her upper body covered in nothing but a sweaty undershirt.

"H-HEY!"
"Oh come on, you said you wanted to help!"

Louise only looks on in confusion. Before she finally studders out a question.
"W-wait, was that a real gun?"

You spin it around on your finger, "Nothing but, Lass! You can't hurt people by fighting here."
"Well.. then.. How do you hurt people?"

That's a question you weren't expecting her to ask.
Axel picks it up, "Ah don't worry about that kid, Go on! Show that dummy what you're made of."

She puts a bit more effort into it this time, focusing on stabs and thrusts. You can tell that she has had some practice with a rapier. She's a little clumsy with it, but quickly picks up how to handle the longer, heavier version of what she's used to.

Odelle takes this time to go get another shirt. She comes back without any of her armor on, and instead has a modest shirt and a knee-length skirt.
"Very good, Lass!" You say as she finishes up the last of one of the dummies.

"Now.. Let's try something interesting." You reach over and pick up the gigantic axe leaned on the bench.

"You can't be serious!" Odelle says, seeing you take her rapier and set the giant axe on the ground.

"Oh come on, you don't really know until you try!"

Louise only continues to stare confused, "Um, what should I do?"
"Pick up the axe, Lass. If it's too heavy, don't hurt yourself, but just give it a try."

Odelle looks like she's about to explode out the top of her head. She continues to remain silent, only watching as Louise is able to heave the axe above her head with relative ease.

"Wow." She says, marveling at her superhuman strength.
"Go on, Lass! Those training dummies have it coming."

Without another word, she hops off at the dummies, culling each one of them as effortlessly with one or two blows. Chopping through them like a kind of superpowered lumberjack. Which is quite impressive considering that the axe is over twice the size that she is.

Odelle's mouth falls open, Axel takes serious pause at the sight with only a slight smile on his face.

You, on the other hand, are beaming. This is both the most glorious thing you have ever witnessed and the funniest thing imaginable. You wish you could get someone to paint a portrait of the little girl, giant axe above her head, rending training dummies in half left and right.

Lastly are ranged weapons, there aren't many targets left to train with left, so you try to be conservative with what you have.

You pick up the magic wand and hand it to her. She's still rubbing the sores on her hands from waving that axe around like a maniac.
Axel explains how to make it work, same thing as the revolver in that they have to be 'primed' before using them by loading each chamber (the rings hanging off of it) with a magic projectile before it's fired. You do the honors of priming it for her.
"Okay, Lass. Just concentrate on the target, and throw the bullet right out of the wand. Think of it like a ball and a cup."

She nods as she takes it into her hand, she waves it around as some bolts fly past some of the training dummies and impact the others. You show her how to prime a single chamber of the wand and just tell her to keep practicing with it.
Overall, she's not as good with it as Aligot.

You pick up the musket next and ask her to prime it in the same fashion. She's able to load a magic bullet into the chamber with a little bit of assistance from you. You kneel down next to her as she wearily tries to take aim at a target.

"Just line up the end of the barrel with the edge of the front. See these two notches? You're just trying to make them meet."
"O-Okay." she says, she's still waving and moving all around as she tries to steady it.

She puts the musket butt right up to her face at the last second as she fires with a loud BANG. The recoil causes the butt to jump up and tap her on the cheek. She falls backwards from the shock as Odelle jumps up to help her.
Other then that, though, she hit the target on the first try! Right on the neck.
"Great job Lass! That's great, you-"

That's when you notice something, a single tear running down her cheek.
"I-" She begins, "I NEVER WANT TO FIRE A GUN AGAIN!"

Oh brother, Lass. You were doing so well with it, too.

You finish up training with a couple more shots from the musket, despite her protests. You think she's relatively used to the loud bang and the recoil at this point. So it's a good stopping point for the day. You tell her to grab her new favorite toy and go put it away.

It's strange how quickly she got used to that axe. Maybe some people are just predisposed to it, or maybe you would have been the same way if you had tried using an axe as your first weapon.

"Hey Jack, Wait up." Axel says, Odelle trailing not far behind him.
"Argh? What is it?"

"We were talking about it, Jack, and we're not really sure why you decided to come help us like you did."
"What'd ya mean?"

Odelle plays with the hem of her skirt, "Well, at first you seemed like kind of a rude jerk and-"
"-What Odelle meant to say," Axel says, interrupting her, "Is that you really didn't seem like the helping type at first. But we're glad to be proven wrong. Thanks Jack."
"Y-yeah, Thank you Jack." Odelle says, trying to compose herself.

"Well! I'm glad to finally hear that. I was thinking that no one really wanted my help."
"Gallete is a prideful country, and admitting that we couldn't do something by ourselves is something I don't think anyone here wants to admit." Axel says, "I'm not even sure if the princess would thank you, even though it means a lot to her."

"She already has."

That causes both of them to stop in their tracks.
"Wait, the princess thanked you for something? Seriously? She's never done that before." Odelle says, visible shock on her face.
"She did it for me this time."

Axel laughs and slaps your shoulder, "Take that as a sign of pride, Jack. You may be the only person she ever does that for."

>"It's not me you guys should be thanking, anyway."

"Listen, guys, you shouldn't be thanking me anyway. Did you two even thank the kind snake-lady that was working in the kitchen the last few days?"

"Eh?"

They look at each other for just a moment.
"..What was she doing in there?"
"She was the one that made the brew that cured the hero!"
"Wha-"
"Seriously!? That's what she was doing? I thought she was making some kind of specialty for the princess"

"She's been in that kitchen for almost three days and you never thought to ask her what she's was doing?"

They both shake their heads.
Cat people, you don't get them.

"Both of us are'a heading out. Go to the stables and find her. I need to have a talk with the princess about that, too."
"R-right, We'll go find her." Odelle says, guilt dripping from her voice.

"And another thing, Axel?"
"Eh?"
"Don't let the hero slack up on her training. I want her swingin' that axe every day."
"Ha! Like I would let her. You can count on me Jack."

You put the lighter weapons away in the armory and catch up to Louise, who looks to be oddly energetic about the whole thing.

"Louise?"
"Jack I was like 'Swish swish swish' and the dummies just-"
She does all sorts of hand motions while hopping around. For someone who was bedridden a couple days ago, you're impressed with how much she's improved in such a short time.
"-and then we got to the gun and I don't like guns that much but-"
"Lass, I'm leaving today."

Louise stops, she looks confused at your words.
"Leaving? Where you going?"
"Back to Biscotti, it's a neighboring country that I'm the hero of."

She widens her eyes, her energy seems to drain.
"W-will I ever see you again?"
"Oh come on, Lass, I'm right across the border! There's no way you can never not see me again. But listen here-"

You kneel down to her eye level.
"You need to keep your training up, and stay strong. You're here to defend this country and the people inside of it, and if something happens, I won't be around to bail ya out."

"Right!" She says, with a kind of optimism to her voice.
She giggles, "You know, for a big scary pirate, you really don't act like the brute I took you for."

"Hay, you can't say you know that many of them." You stand up and ruffle her hair some. "Remember, Odelle and Axel are going to make sure you keep up with your training. So don't fall behind, or you'll find out how scary I really am."

She nods and runs off to bother Odelle. You think your mission around this part of the castle is pretty much complete. It's about time to go pack what few things you brought and get going.

But first, you have a princess to make a request for. There's no way you're letting her off the hook without at least apologizing to Madeleine. After all, she's the only reason Louise is still alive.

Speaking of which, there she is now. Talking with Aligot and the others outside the library.

"'Ey!" You call out to them, you don't really care about whatever kind of dumb stuff they were talking about beforehand anyway.

"Oh, Jack!" Aligot says, waving at you. "Ready to go?"
"Not quite" You say, "Can I talk to the princess abou-"

That's when you notice Madeline crawl around the corner of the library, she takes her time to not slither over a rough section of the stone flooring.

"Good! Then we're all here. Princess, have you thanked Madeleine for her services rendered unto the castle?"
Charlotte is slow to respond, "Um. That's why you're here?"
"Have you?"

She sighs, "Yes Jack, that's why I'm here. I came here to thank everyone. Not just Madeleine."
Aligot sighs as well, "You know Jack, it's not very nice to demand things from everyone. Especially when they're the princess of a kingdom."

You reach up and grab Aligot's head, rubbing it forcefully.

You read your hand over and grab her ears next.
"-And you, Next time when I say that disease isn't caused by ghosts and demons, you listen."

"U-um." She's not really sure how to take your assault on her ears.
Even less so when she realizes that your other hand has grabbed her tail.
"Thanks for coming over and paying your respects to Madeleine without me having to prod you, that's a plus in my book."

Madeleine can only laugh at this, "Camille is already packed, so we can leave anytime you want, Jack."

"Princess, it's been great talking with you, maybe we'll meet again someday."

Charlotte seems oddly confused by that, "What do you mean 'Someday'? I still have to go to Biscotti with Louise here in a few days for a grand meeting."
"Seriously Jack, it's been two days and you already forgot?" Aligot says, that only prompts you to grab his head and rub it a second time.

"Sorry Lad but I've had other things on my mind. We're going to travel together until you split off to finish your investigation? How long before you're back in Biscotti?"
"We should be back by tomorrow."
"Great, don't make me come lookin' for you guys."

"Gougere, Aye'm leaving, so try to keep everything in line, ya?"
"I always do, Jack. Can you do me one favor?"
"Always, what is it?"
"When you get back to Biscotti, tell Felice to come home."

Wait, Felice is that green-haired knight. Now that you think about it, you haven't really seen her around recently.

"She volunteers as a messenger sometimes to spend a couple weeks messing around in Biscotti, tell her that Auntie can't cover for her being gone much longer and that she needs to get back to her post."
"Will do, Are you her Aunt?"
"That's right, she's a good girl, but I can tell she really only wanted to be knight so she could goof off with her friends."

On the way, you manage to say goodbye to Antonin as well. He thanks you for everything you did, but seems pre-occupied with his current duties to chat for too long.

The road home is hard, but fortunately, you're in the time of the summer where it stays light most of the day. It's probably around 3PM when you split off from Aligot and Camille as they head toward the village to finish up a few things.

You kind of wish they took a little more backup than just the two of them, but Camille is strong, you're sure they'll be alright.

A few more hours pass before you're back in Biscotti territory. Madeleine spends most of the trip fast asleep while you spend most of it trying to remember the way to get back.
Thankfully, you're nothing if not a keen adventurer with a good sense of direction.

You pass by the battlefield, the courtyards near the castle, back onto the winding path that leads to the shrine.

Before you know it, you can spot the shrine. Atsuko is out front, sweeping the pathway. It's kind of strange to think of it this way, but you're home.

There's something about coming back here.

Atsuko approaches,
"Oh, There you are Jack. I got your letter, I'm flattered that you think that you have anything worth selling, but the market for moldy books and filthy coats hasn't been what it used to be."

Maybe it's the sense of having a place to call home, or even a nation that accepts you as their own.

"By the way, when you were out on your little adventure, the king of the underworld kidnapped the Princess, again."

Either ways, times like this, it makes you glad to at least have a place to lay your head down when you're tired.

"-And earlier, Yuuki declared that she was going out and save her. So I'm guessing she's probably captured by this point now, too."

You feel as if you could just go right inside and fall asleep forever.

"Well, Y'know, they aren't going to save themselves, so I guess you should get going. If you leave now you can probably get back by noon tomorrow. See you around, Jack."

And for a brief moment, you wonder what it would be like spending your entire life back in Gallete.

I hate home.

Wow that went longer than I expected it to. But we did it! We left Catland!

Thanks for the thread everyone.

How was this entire arc?
>>
>>35122750
tell me she was bullshiting us
>>
>>35122707
See things like this are why you never stop sailing the seas. Shenanigans can't catch you if you are sailing/drunk.

> you wonder what it would be like spending your entire life back in Gallete.
That says a lot.
>>
>>35122750
Horrid, fuck cats.
>>35122707
>again
If its happened more than once before we got here you fuckers can solve it on your own. Drinking time is now.

It was fine, but cat people still suck for the most part.
>>
>>35122814
Anyone else up for stealing a boat and leaving forever?

Is this a regular occurrence then?
I swear, the bullshit we put up with.
>>
>>35122750
Thanks for running, I think it was good. I like Charlotte the best.
>>
>>35122834
Its not like they actually need the princess or anything, I'm pretty sure she doesn't do anything important anymore.
>>
>>35122750
It was kinda nice, but like said above, cat people are dicks.
>>
>>35122707
So we totally need to start the next thread by telling Atsuko if she doesn't sleep.with us for at least a few hours we won't be able to rescue ourselves from a kitten much less the princess from whatever she's up to.
>>
>>35122906
That sounds fun.

>First thread that's hit autosage

I love you guys!
>>
>>35122929
Yup. And we need it to be as innuendo filled as possible so she blushes. And then we just sleep next to her while she fumes. Or we might cuddle her, who knows.
>>
>>35122938
Yeah, will I love you too. No homo.
>>
>>35122707
Goddamn Atsuko, the cats were dicks but you manage to top them in like 5 sentences.
>>
Anyway, I'm glad everyone enjoyed it! I'm going to bed though because I'm up waaay too late.

Pre-archived because I was worried about falling asleep too soon, take care everyone.
