You are a Magical Girl, and you've had a hell of a night.

A night that you're still struggling to wake up from, with the familiar heaviness of your entire body unwilling to cooperate after your sinful excesses a full eight hours ago. It's worn you out enough that you couldn't even lift your personal Callidus' arms off of you, both of them still locked around your waist in a possessive clasp. Like a child unwilling to let go of a precious stuffed animal.

You need a bath, you grumble to yourself as you take stock of your surroundings - your quarters, in the Ninth Officio Assassinorum Headquarters, seeing as you were in absolutely no shape to drive yourself home last night. No one else was. Not after your ratification after-party, which Kyoko herself had personally overseen.

There were drinks.

...There were a lot of drinks.

And a lot of celebrating, with your entire Officio seemingly and ridiculously pleased at your promotion.

You weren't THAT pleased, not with what you've learned that night - but even Kyoko's enthusiasm had always been infectious. She could have made a corpse get carried away and rot even faster. She even got you to sing, an act that you'll never be able to live down unless you kill everyone who witnessed it. Mami was quick to dissuade you from that temptation, of course.
>>
>>35148894

Warmaster. It's official now. As official as the hat that you'd grown accustomed into wearing over your head, its ill-fitting clasp around the perimeter of your scalp more a comfort now than something irritating. As real as the greatcoat you've grown accustomed to draping over your shoulders, pulling it close around you when it felt too cold for comfort. As honest as your chosen symbol - a shattered amethyst star bordered by the rifling of a gun barrel, replacing the winged skull Imperialis that Kharn had taken as her own.

And as damning as the truths you learned, from a former Warmaster now on her way back to the Moon, the furry white bastard you call your boss, and the green-haired Callidus that you've taken for your own.

You need a bath, you find yourself murmuring again. A bath and a drink. And probably another drink after that, to blunten the hangover pressing its spikes against the insides of your skull.

After a few painful moments of extracting yourself from the girl in your bed, you set out to get both those things. ...Not at the same time, of course, but not because it made sense. No, it was simply because you've done it before, and all you did was water down whisky that you sorely needed to wash down a mouthful of painkillers with. Painkillers, because the pain in your body hurt so much that it wouldn't even allow you to fall unconscious.

The bath takes you half an hour, with the usual calls of nature responded to and the rituals of hygiene Mami had taught you attended to. With your ponytail firmly tied and your costume still tingling with the static charge of being freshly manifested onto your form, you walk to your Office and sit down on your desk. You note with a sigh of relief at the empty surface of your desk, bereft of paperwork whatsoever.

[1/2]
>>
>>35148899

Even Mami must be taking it easy this morning - you dimly remember her going toe-to-toe with Takane in a singing contest, each one clasping a microphone in one hand and a full stein of draft beer in the other. The contest was to keep singing the lyrics right as you progressively got drunker - and whoever stuttered or mis-sang a verse lost.

All the better for you, then. You need a breather from paperwork as it is, what with having much more important things to worry about. ...You're talking about what you learned last night, of course. From Vintage, from Kyuubey, and from Midori.

And you wrote it all down in your journal, so you wouldn't forget.

Draining your glass of whisky, you pull out the slim black book and place it in front of you, before opening it to the part where you started jotting down notes last night. The words 'Akashic Realm' scribbled on the very top of the page, with the c written after you crossed out an errant 't' in its place. You note here that you've written...quite a bit about it. Quite a handful of pages, in fact.

In contrast, the parts you wrote about what Midori told you are...depressingly short. But they tell you what she knows, and what you wanted to know.

Which one do you want to read first?

Siberia seems like the likely answer. Seems like Chiaki and Midori finally had that talk, although I wonder if we also told her about the Clara Dolls and other stuff that we needed to swap notes on. It would seem, at least, that Midori wasn't berated for complicating things with Wendy during a business meeting yet.

they're almost always revealled in write ups in some fashion.

The point of write ups isn't that they can't do stuff that isn't going to be important in the main thread: The point is that any information we need to make an informed decision turns up in the thread making the writeups of secondary importance.

You decide to read your notes about the Akashic Realm first. ...Yeah, might as well get it out of the way first, while things are still quiet and everyone's nursing their hangovers. Least chance of people barging in unnannounced and interrupting you.

Taking a sip from your glass - letting out a sigh of contentment as the alcohol begins to dull the edge of the morning once more - it's here that you pore through your own hurried handwriting. Remembering how Vintage and Kyuubey explained it to you, with the glowing holographic simulation of a globe hovering in the middle of the room.

"We're not quite sure what the Akashic Realm actually is." Vintage's admission was curt, frank, and delivered with an uncharacteristic lack of a smile.

"When the First - honors unto his name - discovered it with the very first Magical Girls he contracted, then called Fox Brides, they thought they'd found a portal to Hell. A dimension of pure agony and despair, of pain and torment, where those who sinned enough to fall from divine grace would spend eternity screaming." The former Warmaster smiled then, but the smile was a cold and bleak thing. "It would've been the best-case scenario, in my opinion."

You're not so sure you disagree. It wasn't hell, but it was something very close to it, from what expeditionary parties of both Magical Girls and mundane folk found out.

The Akashic Realm, as the explorers found it, was not the afterlife promised to sinners. It was - in the hastily-babbled words of those who remained sane enough to make the journey home - something worse.

>>
>>35150122

The Akashic Realm, as the explorers found it, was not the afterlife promised to sinners. It was - in the hastily-babbled words of those who remained sane enough to make the journey home - something worse.

First of all, the laws of reality meant nothing in the Akashic Realm, or if they did, they were applied very...inconsistently. Time, for example, was mutable in the realm, in the sense that someone could spend a few minutes inside the Akashic Realm, and a year would have passed outside of it. Sometimes the inverse happened - one particular Magical Girl who'd volunteered in a solo mission was in and out of a stabilized Akashic Point in no less than ten seconds, and she'd returned a gibbering old woman, shrieking curses and pleas for death before Witching Out.

Gravity and geometry also were twisted, making not only exploring the realm an entire nightmare, but also one that drove the non-contracted staff insane. Some landscapes inside the Akashic Realm simply defied description, or imagination. A few resembled the hell that the Akashic Realm was rumored to be, all mountains of skulls and lakes of blood and the air stinking of sulfur. Most were not meant to be looked at.

But what made the Akashic Realm much more dangerous than its blatant disregard of the laws that underpin reality was that it was infested with Witches. And not just the typical novice-squad fodder Witch that a high-ranking Eversor or Vindicare could solo - these were powerful ones. Old ones, intelligent ones the ones that had tasted human flesh and evolved past the normal categories of Witches and well into Alpha Class. Omega Class, even. Witches that usually took multiple squads to put down - or even multiple Officios. Officio breakers. Career-enders. Witches that not only hungered, but also hunted.

[2/3]
>>
>>35150154

"That's where we arrive at the most feasible theory of what the Akashic Realm is," It was Kyuubey who spoke that time. "That it is a giant, amalgamated Witch's Nightmare, one housing an untold number of Witches. Perhaps it was formed by those Witches gathering in one place, or that it had been there all along, borne from a particularly powerful Witch that we don't even have a category for. Neither hypothesis fills us with any optimism, of course, but there we are."

Vintage and Kyuubey then began throwing other theories at you, as if they thought you'd be interested. In a way, you were, up until they started drowning in you in metaphysical technobabble. The words 'quantum' and 'string theory' were tossed about, but one theory struck you in particular, especially with what you've learned from the stooges.

That the Akashic Realm was a future. Or rather, THE future, one that had been killed by some catastrophic event that unleashed so many Witches upon it all at once. There was evidence of it found - of certain parts of the Realm matching up to actual cities in reality, but broken and reaved clean of life. The expeditions that found these cities searched high and low to find some chronological proof of just when this event happened, to see if they could bring home a warning - but each one found a different date of armageddon. Some much too far into the future, others of days long past. A few found no proof at all, except for visions of a black-winged goddess cackling in the sky.

You wrote this down too. And underlined it. And circled it a couple of times.

After this, the Akashic Points were a bit easier to understand. They were simply what was called the 'portals' to the Akashic Realm. Holes in reality that would tear themselves open with no warning at all, at any place, at any time. Sometimes they opened and closed without issue, and without anyone the wiser.

[3/4]
>>
>>35150170

Sometimes they let a Witch through - and a team would be quickly dispatched to take care of it. Very rarely would they stabilize and stay open - serving not only as a portal leading out of the realm, but also one to permit entry. Portals like that were as treasured as they were dreaded, apparently - as any Officio who had control of one would have a reliable source of Grief Cores, should they fall upon hard times. Of course, they would have to venture into the realm itself and fight Omega-category Witches to harvest those cores, but a desperate Incubator would not balk at such a thing, much less the Magical Girls it led.

You asked them a few questions at that point, you're sure. No one trying to take this all in wouldn't have a few questions of their own, surely.

What did you ask Kyuubey and Vintage?

[]Why is this a secret?
[]Are there any Akashic Points in Japan?
[]Is there anything else that would lead to the Akashic Realm Future theory?

The end result of every failed timeline Homura ever visited. The universes where Madokami never ascended.

Those timelines don't just blink out of existence after Homuhomu leaves They were torn apart by witches and became a kind of "dead universe".

Hence, the wailing, the despair, and the hellscape.
>>
I wonder if this realm is somehow related to the apocalyptic scenario we saw when we used timestop. There were black feathers and everything was dead&destroyed.

Maybe our timestop somehow shifts us out of the real world and closer to these Akashic realms or something bizarre like that.

We should consult the three stooges about this.

I don't know. Early timelines would have been essentially normal (Madokas witch would not have been unstoppable), so Homura moving on would not have destroyed the world.

Later timelines where Madoka has become godlike due to Homuras interference would have had Kriemhild Gretchen absorb the world into her barrier.

Looking at the wiki, it says this: "Witch of salvation. Her nature is mercy. She absorbs any life on the planet into her newly created heaven--her barrier."

Does not really match either way.

I think it's pretty obvious what happened.

Homucifer is a Chiaki witch on par with Pinky. She made all other Magical Girls become witches and rules them all as a fallen angel. Combined with the shield...homucifer was able to extend her influence beyond just her own timeline. The shield's capacity for erasing what has already come did not completely eliminate her.

You asked your questions, right enough, as politely as you could have managed at the time. Vintage herself answered, but not after looking towards Kyuubey - as if seeking permission. You saw him nod then, which practically confirmed it.

...Now why would an Equerry of the First ask an Incubator of the Ninth permission for anything? But you filed this away for later, eager to absorb Vintage's answers first before indulging your own suspicions.

"There are Akashic Points everywhere, all over the place." Vintage had gestured to the globe. "But like we explained, they're transient tears in reality, and they resolve in their own quickly enough that nothing of any significance can slip through. As for your question, though, yes. There were three of them, stable ones that needed guarding."

Another smile. "The First, beloved by all, sent for three of his brothers to guard each one, with their own Magical Girls. To build their base of operations around each one, protecting the outside world from anything that tried to get out, and ensuring that no unenlightened soul tried to get in." She holds up two dainty fingers. "Two of them unfortunately collapsed into themselves, early on. Only one stable Akashic Point remains in Japan."

You couldn't hide your surprise then, when you caught up and connected the dots that they'd shown you. You made it clear to them, after writing it down in your journal.

The fucking...the fucking building is built on top of a fucking Akashic Point?

"Stabilized, warded, and fully protected," Kyuubey was quick to reassure you. "It presents no harm to us currently, nor do I forsee it being an issue in the future." It's here that you heard the frown in his voice.

[1/2]
>>
>>35151709

"Conversely, it has no use at the moment, either. This particular Akashic Point seems to be...well, eating those who steps into it, before spitting them back out a moment later as burning, twisted corpses. Anything we toss into it gets thrown back out either torn to pieces or half-dissolved in corrosive stomach acid and blood."

Huh. Well. That does sound useless, you'd replied. Kyuubey merely shrugged, and let Vintage continue.

"The evidence that points to the Akashic Realm Future theory, well..." The Equerry hesitated there, glancing once more at Kyuubey's direction. The nod she received egged her on. "...Expeditionary parties, specifically those led by Magical Girls, started encountering Witches. Nothing out of the ordinary, considering where they are, correct?"

You nodded here, hiding the fact that you were getting irritated by her pauses. As nice as she seemed, you found her penchant for dramatic phrasing a bit grating. ...Well, it was either that, or this wasn't a subject she relished talking about.

"They were encountering their own Witches." Vintage closed her eyes then, shivering slightly, as if reliving a particularly nasty memory. "They didn't have any markers or any equipment that would confirm this beyond any reasonable doubt, but those that managed to survive such an encounter and then come back all said the same thing: that they had fought their own selves, but twisted into the monsters we have always been fated to become."

"Such reports have always been dismissed as delirious visions brought about by Realm Exposure," Kyuubey had chimed in, but there was a faint note of disbelief in his voice. "But nearly all the reports that come from expedition survivors do contain accounts of such phenomena. A Magical Girl being attacked by her own Witch, her own manifestation of despair."

But shouldn't that be enough? Isn't that enough proof?

[2/3]
>>
>>35151754

Kyuubey's stare was long and cold and silent, spoiled somewhat by Vintage uncapping her flask and draining it. "Without concrete proof, the theory remains just that: a theory. It's an interesting one, though, to be sure." The Incubator nodded once, ears flapping, before nodding once more to Vintage.

"As for the vision of the black-winged goddess, only a handful of people truly saw it, and the accounts are a bit outdated." Vintage seemed to recover here, as if glad to be getting back to more comfortable territory. "But the descriptions match, even when you consider they were made years apart. Black wings, sharklike eyes, and a laugh that chills your bones and freezes your soul."

You were writing these down before she added, as an afterthought: "And a ribbon, red as blood, tied into her hair."

...Yep. You made sure to underline that, too.

"It's not the only theory that begs to be examined in closer detail." Kyuubey chuckled. "For instance, there's a school of thought that all the Akashic Points - the stable ones, anyway - are all connected to each other. This is the basis, of course, for our teleportation technology, but only in the most basic and potentially fatal sense. It's why we've yet to adopt it as a stable means of transportation, after all."

Well. Besides that tidbit making you vow never to step onto a fucking teleporter for the rest of your fucking life, that's pretty much what all you learned about the Akashic Realm, and the Akashic Points that opened to it. You learned that the biggest one that has been stable ever since it was found is under the Second's eternal protection, with their castle built right on top of it. It's also the only one cursed with a name - Ocularis Terribus.

[3/4]
>>
>>35151784

And unlike the one your office building is sitting under, it was reasonably safe to enter for expeditionary purposes - for a given level of safe, anyway. Anyone who wanted to look into the realm where gods and mortals meet can hardly do better than the Eye of Terror - that is, if they're invited by the Second to one of their 'Crusades'.

It's here that you remembered something, and immediately blurted it out to Kyuubey. The Big Shell mission. The Witch Core you were asked to recover. Does that mean...?

"Our Grief Seed supplies are ample." Kyuubey had replied, and left it at that. Well, not before reminding you that the information you were just informed about was in fact classified to the highest degree, and must be kept absolutely confidential. Warmaster only.

Back in your office, you let out a sigh as you come to the last page of your notes about this particular topic. That was an ordeal to keep track of and remember. Besides the fact that the knowledge of a very real and very tangible Hell now rested on your shoulders, there was also that theory that kept pulling at your subconscious. That, and the reported sighting of the black-winged goddess with the freaky giggling.

You take off your glasses and pinch the bridge of your nose for a moment, closing your eyes against a migraine trying to gnaw its way through the back of your head.

Right. Now, what do you do?

I feel these are both vitally important. The stooges will certainly have recognized the ribbon reference if nothing else.

Also, I seem to recall Murderface mentioning that after all GWs had been collected, TNO had to be fought in the place where "gods and mortals meet", which suggests they do have some knowledge of this.

Dildoes is the one who said it after learning about Pinky:

She turns to you. "Get the Golden Weapons. All of them. Use them to kill her, in the realm where gods and mortals meet." She taps at her Shield. "Only then you'll be able to save her."

Murderface has his own solution:
+ NOT. ONLY. WAY. + The pulse finally finds it way back to you in a pain-filled stab. + FIND. GOLDEN WEAPONS. KILL. TRANSCENDENT ONE. +

Either way though, it seems our ultimate goal is to gather all 20 golden weapons, and then jump into one of these portals and kill either Madoka or TNO.

You decide to continue on with your notes on what Midori told you last night. After the party, and after your...well, stern talking-to about her behavior during the meeting with Wendy. There were tears involved, of course, but you understood where she was coming from. That didn't make it right, you made sure to point out. She promised not to do it again, and then, you asked her about Siberia.

...Looking at your notes, you can't believe that so much had happened then that you don't remember at all. Not even the bit when you supposedly went berserk after Midori died, and engaged your winged self in what could be the world's most violent suicide (or masturbation, you could almost hear Kharn cackle). You don't remember any of it, even though it was...well, you. It was all you. Fragments of yourself, trying to murder each other, while protecting the green-haired girl trying to rescue you.

Maybe something went wrong. Or maybe you're not supposed to. Maybe that's the point.

Anyway, from what you learned - the incident back at Siberia seemed to have split your psyche into four pieces. The first one Midori found in the barrier - with Pinky's help - was the one that sounded much like Braids. The second was, in her own words, 'a much cuter version of Sempai', which you frowned at. The third was a dead ringer for Murderface, and the fourth...well, you want to say it's Dildoes, but besides being an annoying bitch, she didn't seem evil. Sorta unhinged, sure, but not evil. For one, she didn't have the golden wings and shit. And she hasn't tried to kill Midori yet.

The stuff about Pinky, though...that had you pay attention to Midori's every word, enough that the Callidus began squirming self-consciously on the spot, seemingly uncomfortable with how hard you were staring at her.

[1/2]
>>
>>35152729

She tried her best regardless, telling you about how the pink-haired demon not only helped her find the Braids-fragment, but also protect her from a berserk Murderface - even sacrificing herself just so Midori could get away.

But the most important thing you learned in Midori's account - and something you made sure to write in its own fresh page, just to emphasize how important it is: Pinky isn't as insane or as crazy as she says she is. It's just one side of her - the corrupted side. There's another side to her, one with amber eyes and a dress of pure white, and smiled instead of grinned. Giggled instead of cackled.

Saved souls instead of devouring them.

That's something to remember. That's something you should definitely tell the Stooges.

Oh, and there's the thing about...well, Malal forcing Pinky to give Midori a second chance. Because she was in your own barrier for some reason.

Did you ask Midori any questions about Siberia? You can't remember. All you do remember is that, well...things got sort of heated after she stopped crying. She wanted to cuddle, but then she started taking your costume off, and...

...Well, did you ask her anything?

You asked her a couple of questions, yeah. Nothing too invasive, and you made sure she'd finished crying before you did.

"I...I don't know, Sempai," She had answered your first question in her usual, hesitant way - somewhat stuttering the first word, as if thinking about changing tack in mid-sentence, before forging ahead anyway. "But she did listen to me then, even when the both of us were scared, and...she seemed like a really nice kid. Like a younger sister trying to be responsible, and even when it blows up on her, still tries to do so while doing her best not to cry." She pauses for a moment, looking down on her hands. "A-and, I helped her a bit, when she was waking you up, so maybe..."

Mmh. Well, that's fine, but with Pinky being mercurial as she is, you don't know if she can be trusted with the concept of gratitude, and the implicit trust that came with it. Still...maybe it's worth a shot, if things came down to that.

As for your last question, though?

"I...I think it was a fragment of her, Sempai. Just like you had fragments of yourself running around - except hers was rooted to one place in the school, somehow." Midori had begun to murmur her replies into your shoulder at this point, with her arms wrapped around you. "I wanted to see it for myself, but...she was really angry about it for some reason, so I didn't try to push the subject."

She shakes her head. "From how she described it, maybe it was a fragment of her past, before she became a Magical Girl? She talked about it being weak and whiny...and something about Sayaka-san, too..."

[1/2]
>>
>>35151298
we're all mad here, anyan
>>
>>35154225

Hnh. That sorta makes sense. You can see Pinky being pissed about weakness. And if it was a fragment of her, then it'd be doubly infuriating and embarrassing for the insane goddess. After all, you haven't forgotten why she asked you to gind the golden weapons, so long ago - it was so she could have her rematch. But is it really the same now, when you've found out so much, and experienced so much?

Yet another thing to bring up with the Stooges, you figure.

You wanted to thank Midori for being honest with you, for remembering such...well, disturbing memories at your request. But she didn't give you the chance then. She wanted to apologize for what she did and for Wendy, the alcohol made the both of you a bit less uninhibited, and you were inside your unused quarters, so...

...

Well, here you are. Nursing a hangover and a glass of whiskey, reading your own memories written by your own shaky hand. Officially Warmaster. Officially a Watch-wearing Dildo.

And you've just finished reading your notes on what you learned last night.

You drain your glass of whiskey again, before putting your journal back in your inventory.

It's still a lot to take in, even when you've written down the main points in easily digestible chunks.

And to think you still have the Officio to worry about, along with the deal with the Prophet.

...Fuck. Well, just...one thing at a time, then. Hopefully you'll get some of them sorted before you have to deal with the others.

A quiet beeping noise alerts you to the folded laptop on your desk - and you carefully lever the top open, activating the screen with a tap of the keyboard. What greets you is your Culexus Rank Leader's helmeted face, her skulled helm growling at you from the screen. Omegon. Chitose Yuma.

[2/3]
>>
>>35154260

"Good morning, Warmaster." The Culexus' vox speakers as usual robs her voice of all warmth, but you have the sneaking suspicion that there isn't really anything for the mechanical speakers to steal. "Congratulations on your ratification."

The congratulations is stiffly polite, but you're not going to jump down her throat for being on the wrong side of insincerity. At least she made the effort. You thank her and greet her all the same.

She nods at the screen, before clearing her throat. "Warmaster, one of the prisoners, Lucius, wishes to talk to you. She's decided to help us find Oriko."

Oh? Well...that's good, isn't it? But you left Mami to handle the prisoners from the Kirishima Ruri op, so she'll take care of it--

"No, Warmaster. Lucius wants to see you. She wants to confess to you." It's here that a sigh leaves her lips, transmitted by her vox-speakers as a waspish snarl-curse. "I think it's a trap to try and kill you, but she's not showing any signs of deception so far, and she IS shackled inside a Silent Room." A pause. "Maybe it's worth hearing her out."

How do you react?

[]Let her stew for a few more days. She can wait for a bit until I'm ready to talk to her.

Eh, I can just chalk this off to Chiaki still thinking like an operative instead of a leader. Honestly, rushing to meet the demands of a prisoner AND going over the head of the subordinate we assigned to the case is a two for one crass error offer in leadership.

Again, it can always be chalked up to Chiaki "learning", but I doubt the lesson will ever stick.

Ordinary Girl Heather Crunch versus the Nakajima Sisters

Before me, Nakajima is shielded by no less than SIX robotic guardians. They bear a VERY strong resemblance to the other Nakajima meditating under the waterfall, although for some bizarre reason they are dressed- no, designed- to appear as maids. The caps and aprons appear to be there purely for aesthetic design, but the metal domes used for the dresses shield the legs from direct attack. And the poofy pads on the shoulders... They look as though they retract to reveal something. A small projectile launcher, perhaps? In any case, they are both decorative AND functional!

The mouth areas don't -appear- have any seams that indicate they would open. Unless it was a deception to hide weaponry in the head cavities, which I would NOT put past Nakajima! However, the articulation for the arms, hands, and fingers is CLEARLY visible to my amazing eyesight. They don't -look- as though they are capable of bending at the waist, and THAT is a problem for them if they lose their balance. I wonder if they have a stabilizer of some kind to compensate for that?

There are a set of metal plates covering the chests. Now THOSE are almost certainly covering some kind of weapons. Vulcan guns? Missile launchers? Flamethrowers? In any case, it's something that needs to be protected when not in use. Speaking of which, attached to the hem of the metal 'dress' on each one are what I am COMPLETELY CERTAIN are chain swords. Or was it chain sawds? I forget what they're called. In any case, they have sharp-looking teeth running along one edge of the blade. Probably powered by electricity instead of gasoline. Not the most reliable of weapons, but EXCELLENT for cutting a lesser magical girl open like a sapling.

BUT HEATHER CRUNCH IS NO LESSER MAGICAL GIRL!

"So, uhh..." Nakajima says to interrupt my admira- admonishment, SILENT ADMONISHMENT of her MECHANICAL ABOMINATIONS, "aren't you gonna transform now?"

[1/10]

Thanks for the thread!
>>
Ha! As much as I would LOVE to show her just how SUPERIOR I am to her assembled robots by UTTERLY CRUSHING THEM, I need to TRAIN! To better myself, as dictated by the Soul Temperer's decree - by fighting as a civilian instead of as a magical girl! And to OVERCOME my dependency on my powers in place of pure, refined SKILL and PROWESS!

Thusly, I LAUGH DERISIVELY! And then I STRIKE A POSE! And POINT AT NAKAJIMA, AND SHOUT, "THE CRUNCH TRAIN DOES NOT STOP TO TRANSFORM TO FIGHT ROBOTS, NAKAJIMAAAA!"

"Ahahaha, that's adorable!" she laughs, LAUGHS, at my resolve! It is ABSOLUTELY infuriating! I MUST put my foot down in the face of such things!

"I AM NOT ADORABLE!" I inform her VERY STERNLY, wearing a VERY not-adorable face of CONVICTION! "I AM A SWORD OF JUSTICE!" I EMPHASIZE the last point with ELABORATE GESTICULATIONS! I should be posed in front of an EXPLOSION right now!

I'll make my own later. I DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS!

"Where's your sword, then?" Nakajima inquires. As expected of a villain, unable to understand a hero's resolve!

I respond by pounding my chest, and boasting, "I HAVE A SWORD... IN MY HEART!" And she just laughs again!

"Are you for real?" she asks between giggles.

"Come on over and find out," I respond. Oh yeah, that was cool.

"But seriously, though," Nakajima says, voice FULL of condescension, "show me that indestructible body of yours already!"

"It is a HANDICAP!" I declare. "THAT is how CONFIDENT I am that I will -not- be defeated by the likes of you OR your army of robots!"

"Weeell, this is more of a squad -"

"ENOUGH! NOW we talk with ACTIONS instead of words!" I snarl, posing dramatically once more. She is saying something or other but I YELL OVER HER SO THAT I AM NOT INTERRUPTED! "So unless you are RIGHTLY AFRAID of being CRUNCHED on by an ORDINARY girl, then BRING IT ON, NAKAJIMAAAAGGGH!"

That... Hurt?

I look down and... Part of my torso is... Gone. There's just a... A black, smoking gap where it used to be.

I'm... I'm not sure what... There was a bright flash of blue light, wasn't there? Or was that after I got hit? I turn my head to look at my assailants again and... Yes, their eyes are glowing. I can add lasers to the list of things they are able to do.

Well played, Nakajima.

"Science says you're not invincible when untransformed!" the heartless harpy cackles as her automatons advance upon my position. "Science also says you better hurry!"

Damn... Really hurts...

"It's just a scrape!" I reply, putting everything I have into maintaining a facade of absolute confidence. This entire venture feels like it may have been a bad idea.

"Come onnn, transform already!" Nakajima urges. A little voice in the back of my head repeats this urging. It'd be so much more sensible, it argues, to use every advantage I have to utterly crush my opposition.

But that would go against what I set out here to do! It would mean I learned NOTHING! I HAVE to do it this way!

"I will NOT transfo-" My declaration is cut off by the painful thump of a chainsword tapping against my left shoulder, followed by the quiet whirring of metal teeth as the trigger is pressed for just an instant. Blood splatters everywhere as it rips through flesh down to the bone. I have to bite my lip to keep from screaming in pain.

"You keep this up and you really -are- gonna be handicapped, Crunchy!" chides this... horrible, despicable murderous person as the blade is pulled back. Leaving a gaping, oozing gash behind. How can she do this with such a carefree smile?

Like you're any different when you're fighting, the voice nags. And starts to laugh.

"SHUT UP!" I scream to silence the both of them. I just need to disable the robots and...

Wait. How... How can I disable them like this? I don't have a weapon, and any contact would put me in danger of losing a limb. Transforming is not an option, either, but... I don't...

I don't think I could take them on in a straight fight at all. Not like this.

What can change the nature of a myan?
>>
"If you say so!" this... Fiend cheerfully exclaims, before ordering her minions, "rip her up, but leave the gem intact, ‘kay?"

The robots slowly, slowly move towards me, causing me to instinctively take a few steps back. What am I supposed to do here? How can I win this fight?

CAN I win this fight? Is it even winnable?

Just transform, that horrible voice buzzes, and trash them like the third-rate box of scraps they are!

SHUT UP! I am NOT listening to you and I am NOT compromising myself like that!

One of the maids focuses on my left leg as her eyes glow for a split second, and a quick step away causes another beam of blue light to just barely misses my right kneecap, in part because it didn’t bother to turn its head to correct the shot. And yet the skin is charred black from the heat, and it hurts to stand on it.

…There really isn't any other option, is there? I’d hoped it wouldn’t come to this. Ever. But It looks like I have no choice.

I plant one foot in front of me and bellow, “You’ve gone and done it NOW, NAKAJIMAAAA!” My expression is one of GRIM and RESOLUTE DETERMINATION, as I once again point at her. “I am FORCED to use my SECRET TECHNIQUE! One that I had hoped I would not need to EVER use!”

Her bemused smile fills me with confidence. Ha! She has absolutely NO idea what I am about to do! Which gives ME the ABSOLUTE ADVANTAGE with this technique!

“Alrighty, everyone!” Nakajima calls out, clapping her hands to get the attention of her machines. “Hold your positions and get ready!” And they stop in place and take up a defensive stance. HAH! PERFECT!

“THIS IS IT NAKAJIMAAAA!” I ROAR! “HEATHER CRUNCH'S SECRET TECHNIQUE FOR OVERCOMING AN OVERWHELMING DISADVANTAGE!” I take a deep breath in preparation!

And then I POINT JUST OVER my shoulder and mention, “I just remembered something important! See you later!” and throw the Crunch Train into a FULL SPEED REVERSAL! “RUNNING AWAY TECHNIQUE!”

[4/10]
>>
“Ehhhh?! That’s not very heroic at all!” shouts Nakajima towards my retreating back. I’d agree, but I REFUSE to give her that satisfaction!

The waterfall seems so much further away than it was before. But it’s my best chance to deal with them. There was a cave entrance behind it, which means caves, which means I can lose them in there!

“Stop her, my underlings!” Nakajima urges from behind. “Shoot her!”

Let’s see… What did Big Boss say to do when things are shooting at you? Keep going towards cover and… Don’t move in a straight line away from the shooter! So JUMP to the left and AUGH THAT HURTS!

I forgot about that injury from before. It’s so UTTERLY INCONVENIENT, having to deal with such things during moments of URGENCY such as THIS!

A near miss reminds me that I MUST keep moving and IGNORE this pain! And so I SPRINT back into action, dodging away from the LASER BLASTS again and again and AGAIN! While not as fulfilling as engaging them directly, I am still aware that I am fighting against ROBOTS! My adrenaline is SURGING! My blood is BOILING! My heart is POUNDING! My hair is BURNING and I-

MY HAIR IS BURNING! MY HAIR IS BURNIIIIING! I CAN SEE THE BLAZING FLAMES OF ACTUAL FLAMES BLAZING AS THEY SWIFTLY DEVOUR MY RIGHTHAND TWINTAIL AND BURN MY SKIN AND IT HURTS! IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DRENCHED AND NOW IT’S BURNING AND IT SMELLS AWFUL AND IT HURTS!

“Ahahaha! Oh wow, she looks like a cat with its tail on fire!” NAKAJIMA HOWLS WITH LAUGHTER! STOP LAUGHING, NAKAJIMAAAA! YOU WILL GET YOURS FOR THIS!

“Jade! Clothesline her!” ORDERS NAKAJIMA! AND I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT OTHER NAKAJIMA BLOCKS MY PATH! I NEED THAT PRECIOUS WATER BEFORE MY SPOTLESS SKIN IS SEVERELY SCORCHED!

“Jaaaade!”

AND SHE IS NOT MOVING! FORTUITOUS FOR ME AS I NEED TO KEEP MOVING TOWARD THE WATERFALL SHE WAITS BENEATH!

“What the heckles, Jade!” SHOUTS NAKAJIMA, “you’re not being a team player!” OTHER NAKAJIMA WAKES, BUT SHE IS TOO LATE!

[5/10]
>>
As the waters cascade over me, I hear the sound of a flame being extinguished. And -that- merely serves to IGNITE MY DRIVE TOWARDS VICTORY! FURTHERMORE, my leg and my side hurt LESS as the chilly water pours down, and it RINSES my burning blood out of the fresh wound in my shoulder!

The other Nakajima looms behind, but THE CRUNCH TRAIN IS BACK ON TRACK! FOLLOW THE FLOWING WATER TO VICTORY, CRUNCH! INTO THE DARKNESS!

MY BURNING SPIRIT WILL LIGHT THE WAY FOR ME!

Or, after running in far enough that I cannot rely on my eyes alone, I can use the brilliant light of my soul gem instead. Metaphorical fires do not actually help you see in the dark. Or keep you warm for very long. These wet clothes are starting to feel cold.

Hmm… I was hoping for an expansive cavern or branching tunnels, but this river path has been frustratingly linear-

AHA! JACKPOT!

I have just stumbled into an EXPANSIVE CAVERN with what I assume are BRANCHING TUNNELS and a few LARGE ROCKS scattered around! And it has a RAMP up to ANOTHER TUNNEL! FURTHERMORE, the stream I had been following leads to YET ANOTHER TUNNEL! Interesting, but THIS, THIS ROOM HERE, will make a GRAND STAGE for an EPIC CONFRONTATION between GOOD and EVIL!

But first, after stepping out of the stream and tracking water everywhere, I must make preparations. Preparations such as dealing with the inconveniences of injuries and wet clothing. Luckily, I am completely certain nobody is here this time to catch me stripping down and wringing out the shirt, pants and underwear I wore.

Before redressing… I tear off a long part of the right pants leg, and tear that vertically. Tying it over my shoulder wound, it does well enough as a bandage in the absence of actual medical supplies.

You have medical supplies, the voice grumbles faintly as I get dressed; you just need to access your inventory.

Not listening to you, annoying voice.

Now then, how many feet away from your soul gem can you be?

----

[6/10]
>>
Perching up on the ramp gives me a good vantage point. And it conceals me from the lights approaching from the way I just came, which were preceded by the sloshing of water as several people trudged through.

“Heyyy Crunchy!” Nakajima’s eerily cheery voice calls out, echoing through the cavern. “Come out, come out wherever you are!”

The six robots emerge, a pair of floodlights mounted on each shoulder. Their heads swivel around as the narrow beams sweep through the cavern, and pass over my hiding spot. I had hoped they were tracking me by my soul gem. Perhaps I overestimated them. Or perhaps it’s not very exact.

“Hiding’s not very heroic either, y’know!” Nakajima adds.

A fair distance behind the robotic minions, I can make out the figures of the Nakajima sisters. Hiding behind your underlings, eh, Nakajima?

Rather than fanning out, the robots are moving in a formation of three rows of two. Terrible news if they catch me, as it means I have to deal with them all at once, but wonderful news if they fail to find me. Which I’m betting on, as it appears they have just noticed my bait.

Yes, there they go, drawn towards the faint red glow of my soul gem below, in an alcove beneath the ramp, with the real Nakajimas staying a fair distance behind them. The mechanical whirring draws closer and closer as the robots are about to enter the alcove.

“Aha, found you-” starts Nakajima from somewhere below, who is interrupted as I spring my trap!

“ROCKS FALL, ROBOTS DIE!” I roar, pushing a huge rock onto the unsuspecting mechs beneath! There is a sound of metal breaking, followed by an explosion – aha, so THAT’S what was in the chest cavity. Surveying the damage, I see the alcove is not blocked off as I’d hoped, but TWO of my assailants have already been taken out!

“What the carp?!” screeches Nakajima in surprise. Already I am sprinting down the ramp to engage the remaining four, picking up the large rock I had set down earlier.

“You fell RIGHT into my trap, Nakajimaaa!” I yell, the lights - and the robots - turning around to face me as I slow down to take in the moment. Yes, that’s right, Crunch is BACK in the spotlight!

“Shoot her shoot her shoot herrrr!” shouts an excited Nakajima, and four sets of eyes glow in unison. JUST AS I WAS HOPING! For that means I can immediately JUMP out of the way and continue my slow advance! YES INDEED, so confident am I, that I don’t even NEED to hurry! I can savor the moment, savor dodging ANOTHER volley of lasers, savor NOT getting scorched this time! Savor fighting KILLER ROBOTS!

“NICE TRY, NAKAJIMA,” I boast, grinning and pointing at… Where I’m pretty sure she is. “but I know your machines’ WEAKNESSES!”

“Getting crushed by rocks isn’t a-“

“AS I had originally figured,” I gladly interrupt, “THESE units you built cannot SEE the target for the second they spend charging up their LASER BLASTS.” Right on time, another salvo shoots past. I can feel the heat, but it doesn’t hurt. NOTHING hurts right now. “Of course you KNEW that, didn’t you? So you have them COMPENSATE if the target is moving!” I start running to the side, and the robots’ heads swivel to follow, as their eyes gain that telltale glow. “HOWEVER!” I say, moving in exactly the OPPOSITE direction. “They CANNOT compensate for somebody changing direction WHILE THEY ARE MOVING!” And, sure enough, when they fire, their heads are pointed in the direction I was going before, and NOT where I am now. I have OFFICIALLY outsmarted them!

“Heehee, that’s… actually… correct?” Nakajima falters, clearly taken aback by my genius. “…Well whatever, you’re going to get tired soon, so why not just give up?”

[8/10]
>>
“BECAUSE I HAVE OBSERVED EVEN MORE WEAKNESSES!” I respond. As I cross into melee range, the maids begin reaching for their chainswords. “Covering the legs to keep them from being damaged was a good plan, except the arms do NOT bend back enough for them to right themselves if knocked down, LIKE SO!”

I LEAP into the air and deliver a FLYING kick to the nearest robot who JUST finished unsheathing its weapon! HYAA!

…OW! Kicking something made of metal is VERY PAINFUL!

But it WORKED! For the machine is THROWN into its companion, and BOTH topple to the ground! Their arms and legs wiggle helplessly as they FAIL to right themselves!

A whirring sound indicates that the other two robots have successfully armed themselves and are about to chop me up with overhand slashes. Whoops.

I LEAP back as best as I can (ow ow ow) and the chainswords CARVE through their fallen companion and DIG into the ground! Another one down, AND it appears that they have embedded their weapons in the rock! I RUSH forward and BASH the other downed unit in the face with my rock until the robot ceases its movements!

“THAT’S FOUR DOWN, NAKAJIMAAAA!” I proudly declare!

There’s no sound other than the mechanical whirring from the other two robomaids struggling with their weapons, and my heavy breathing. Finally, Nakajima speaks up in a low, quiet voice, and asks, “…Who are you, and what did you do with the idiot we were fighting earlier?”

“Ha HA!” I laugh, and point, and POSE! “Through simple observation, THIS level of planning is possible for Heather Crunch! What do you think, Nakajimaaaa!”

…Of course having their weapons trapped in the ground was a stroke of good luck, but it’s better if she doesn’t know that.

“It was very surprising,” Nakajima rep- Wait…

“NOT YOU!” I growl. I am getting TIRED of this gag!

“I thiiiiink we can unleash the rockets now!” Nakajima cackles, as the remaining robots leave their weapons behind. The metal plates on their chests part to reveal an array of warheads poised to launch!

“I’M NOT DONE YET!” I roar. “After all, you needed to keep THOSE covered up because they make for great targets!”

“Aaahh, please shut her up henchlings!” Amber howls as the missiles are primed. BUT TOO LITTLE TOO LATE!

“ROBOT ROCKING STRIKE!” I YELL AS I HURL MY ROCK AT THE CHEST OF ONE OF THEM, AND IT EXPLODES!

YES! I am now POSED IN FRONT OF AN EXPLOSION! LIFE IS GOOD!

I spin back to face them and yell at my remaining adversary, “AND THEN THERE WAS ONE!”

It UNLEASHES its furious salvo of missiles at me, but I am TOO FAST!

“HA! YOU MISSED M-“

-BANG-

…Everything starts to spin as I am tossed forward…

…I can’t move my head…

…I can’t feel anything below my neck…

…I can see the last robot some distance back…

…And it is crushed by a stalactite…

…The only light left is the red of my soul gem…

…And then everything goes dark…

Omake : We Promised

"Huh... Didn't think she'd win."

"Near the end, I didn't think she would lose."

"Yeah, it was weird! I'm surprised Crunchy knew anything about... Well, anything!"

"We may have underestimated her intelligence."

"Mayyybe? She might just be some kind of idiot savant. Anyway, did you record the fight?"

"The combat data has been recorded."

"Not the data I wanted, buuuut it's not like it was hard to jury-rig a bunch of low-grade robots from pieces of the old hideout."

"It may yet prove useful."

"And more importantly, now she can't stop us from experimenting on-"

"Sister. We promised."

"I guessss. You grab her soul gem and I'll gather up all the pieces of her I can get."

"It was fortunate that she had it placed somewhere away from the fight."

"Yeah, yeah, but wouldn't it have been funny if she had actually died?"

"Not especially."

"What's lucky is that her body is mostly intact!"

"Sister? We must hurry if we are to finish before Miss Tenko returns."

"I'm comiiing!"

"...Do you have to do that?"

"Heeheehee, her butt is squishy, too~."

An Irish Girls Wish Pt. 1: Memorial To The Fallen

"Nokota Williams, what is your mission?"

"Join their ranks and gather intelligence."

A pair of deep blue eyes looked out over the Mojave desert as the Hind D flew through the sun baked sky. On the horizon stood the Olympia, a gargantuan being of metal and gears. Nokota sighed, a spike-tipped silver cross was held to her chest as she whispered small prayers to herself.

"And how can we achieve victory, young one?"

"By crushing the non-believers."

The girl flattened the wrinkles in her habit, and stared at her mocha colored skin as memories flooded her mind.

"Go with Her blessing, Nokota. May the true Blessed Lady guide you."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A chopper roared over the Mediterranean Sea from Ankara, Turkey, heading towards the small island of Cyprus. Its cargo, five young women, shifted uncomfortably in their seats. The early morning twilight cast an eerie darkness inside the passenger compartment.
"Why so fucking early? I mean, we barely got any sleep on the flight to Turkey and now we'll have to be up all god damn day."
The voice came from a black haired, silver eyed lady, clad in a red hooded cloak. She pulled at the sleeves of her black blouse and the hem of her skirt. "I'm taking a cat nap."
The girl seated next to her fidgeted about, rubbing her emerald eyes in an attempt to stay awake. "I thought we had to all stay up Natalie?" Her thick Irish accent coated her words as she ran her hands through her short black hair, trying to flatten and straighten her flared out hair in the back. "What about jet lag and all?"
"Shut it Ashlin. I don't want to hear your bitchin'."
"O-okay..."
The cab grew silent, the only sound coming out was the hum of the Gaston 24Ms engine and rotors. Ashlin shuffled in her seat more to fend off sleep, this time turning to her left to a lady in a nun's habit.
"Ummm, Nokota? Where're we headed again?"
"To the island of Cyprus. You remember why, right?"
Ashlin stared at the spectacled blue eyes of her companion, wracking her brain. "Oh yeah! I remember." She mentally kicked herself for lying, and to a nun of the Blessed Lady to boot. "Let's hope we can land soon."
Nokota let out a soft chuckle, seeing through the obvious ruse. "I pray that we do." She removed the headpiece of her habit, letting her platinum blonde hair curl around her head. She brushed the bangs from her eyes, the short, curly locks contrasting with her mocha brown skin. "I could really use a shower."
"How you liking the Fourth?" Ashlin beamed at the nun, her eyes wide with curiosity. "You've been there for a few months, right?"
Nokota ran her hands through her hair, taking a deep breath. "Yeah, it's been a little bit. Need to keep the faith up, you know? After all that happened, we girls need it." She turned to face Ashlin, meeting the Irish girls eyes. "What about yourself? Is everything going well for you?"
"I guess it is. It's much different living in a giant robot than a castle in Europe." Ashlin's eyes veered to the floor as her voice grew soft. "I...I hope my mom is doing okay..."
"I'm sure she's fine, Ashlin. Isn't your father taking care of her?"
"No...he died when I was really little..."
Nokota flinched at the revelation. "Oh, I'm sorry. I don't mean to bring up painful memories."
>>
>>35155092
"It's fine, really." Ashlin waved her hand gently, brushing the comment aside. "I was barely six, so my memories are a little foggy."
"Your father would be proud of you, I think. I'll pray for your mothers safety. The Blessed Lady looks after all her children, and their loved ones."
The cab grew silent, Nokota closing her eyes in prayer, Ashlin doing what she could to stay awake, and Natalie passed out and not a single word from any of them. A call from the pilot broke the silence, letting the girls know arrival would be within the half hour. Silence took the chopper again, until Nokota leaned forward, removing her hood in a scowl.
"Why were we sent with you two?"
The petite-framed Ashlin looked at Natalie, Nokota merely glancing from her prayers. "I mean, you can't fight worth a shit Ashlin, and Nokota there says she's on a pilgrimage, but I know that's a fucking lie."
Ashlin turned to the floor, mumbling a soft 'sorry' to her self. "I-I know I can't fight really well, but I-"
"-try? You 'try'?" Natalie's voice oozed with malice as she glared at the timid girl next to her. "I've seen what 'trying' gets you, and it gets you no where. Only results in your comrades dying. And that's all you do Ash. You try."
She let out a sharp grunt before slamming herself back into the seat, a stern, angry look plastered on her face. "Let's hope you don't try anything, lest you get one of us killed."
Nokota stood up with a jolt, her calm, praying demeanor replaced with one of anger. "Natalie Miles, how DARE you talk to a teammate like that!" She glanced down at Ashlin, her emerald eyes still facing the floor but now welling with tears. "You're making the poor girl cry!"
"Then she needs to stop being such a fucking coward and stand up for herself! Ashlin always cowers away from fights, cries whenever people simply fucking yell at her, and how she apologizes for everything, oh my FUCKING GOD! Do you really want someone like that watching your back?!"
Nokota just stared, her breathing becoming heavy. "I believe Ashlin is a good person and can be a wonderful ally, but if bitches like you are all she has, NO WONDER she feels like she can't do anything!"
"Do you wanna roll, you fuckin' oreo slut?!"
"THAT'S. ENOUGH."
A voice boomed from the other side of the compartment, loud and commanding. "Natalie Miles, Nokota Williams, both of you will sit and be quiet for the rest of this flight." Its source, a tall, tan woman, stood. Her mere presence made the room silent. "I will not tolerate any kind of shit flinging. Do you understand?"
The two girls quietly sat down, each muttering a quick 'yes ma'am'.
"Good."
The tall woman sat back down, pulling her long, copper red hair away from her seat. She sighed, turning to the fifth member in the passenger compartment. "Please, tell me we won't have to deal with this shit for too long, Edea. I don't think my soul gem can take the stress."
Edea gave her a gentle smile, petting the taller woman's head. "You'll be fine Maria. I doubt the arguing of two girls is gonna make you witch out or anything." She pulled at her long, single braided blonde hair, smacking Maria with it. "You're tougher than that."
Another sigh. "Doesn't make things any easier. At least I have you to rely on." The red head stared into the golden yellow orbs of Edea. "You know I love you, right?"
"Uh, ummm. Miss Maria, there are others here too..."
The two love birds turned to Ashlin, both blushing slightly. "Oh, sorry Ashlin."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Gusts from the Gaston's blades whipped up the dust and debris as it landed at the base of Mt. Chionistra, the largest mountain on the island of Cyprus. As the engines idled, the five occupants exited, each with their belongings in their bags. Barely off the chopper, multiple bodies of the Heavy Ironforms, the staple physical constructs of the Fourth Officio, were wheeled into the cargo and passenger compartments.

Edea gasped slightly as the mechanical magical girls were wheeled by, staring at the exposed wiring and gears. "Wh-what the hell happened?"

Her answer came from a tall, slender Ironform, painted in a deep blue. "Non-stop attacks over these past few days. Damage was too great to repair here, had to send them back to the Olympia." The fully metallic woman brushed her hands over her short, hime-cut styled 'hair' before extending a hand out. "Leah Stroud, Eversor commander for the Walpurgis Memorial Project."

Each of the girls shook her hand, greeting her, Maria last. "Maria Brae. I'm the selected leader of our little group here. So, what's-" She was abruptly cut off as the Gaston began lift off, more dirt being tossed around.

As the chopper's blades grew silent in the distance, Maria continued. "-been going on? All we know is that your group has been getting its ass kicked and needed replacements."

Leah let out a distorted sigh before motioning the girls to follow. "Let me show you to our 'strategy room' before we get into the really shitty parts."

The so called strategy room, a small, one room building, sat off to the left of the still in progress statue. As the six girls walked inside, a gentle light above flickered, illuminating enough to compensate for the just rising sun.

"All right, the rundown of the thing." Leah sat down behind a dark metal desk as a small projector rose from it. "We've been working on a monument project for the past few months." A flash, and a panning video of the area popped up from the projector. "But of course, with all things, there are people who want to fuck it up."

The video switched to a view of a battle, gunfire and small explosions lighting up the night sky. The girls of the Fourth were being pushed back, before the feed was cut off. "That's how a lot of the latest attacks have been. Countless equipment repairs and chassis maintenance has taken a toll on our resources." The projector blinked off, submerging itself into the desk.

"Any questions?"

Natalie spoke first. "How far back as the project been pushed back?"

"We started on it about a month after Walpurgisnacht, and it's been three months since then. By all accounts, it was slated to be completed by June." Leah slumped slightly in her chair, pointing out the window. "And now we're nearly back to square one."

Edea sighed, stepping towards the window and gazing at the broken statue. "It was going to be a monument to the Blessed Lady, right? Looks like it was going to be beautiful too..." She turned to her comrades, a melancholy look in her eyes. "Why would people want to destroy this?"
>>
>>35155199

Leah spoke again, a more firm and commanding tone to her voxed voice. "Because they're hired guns, they don't want to see it finished, or the worst offender, it clashes with their own faith." A small tap on the desk, and the projector appeared again, this time flashing images of various magical girls and the local populace. "At first, it was just hired mercs, which posed no threat. But as the weeks went on, it started becoming worse. Religious fanatics claiming it's a tribute to a false god or rogue magical girls claiming that the 'true' Blessed Lady frowns upon it."

She shook her head as the images continued. "The whole 'false' Lady unnerves me though. If we follow the same faith, why are they trying to hurt us?" Out of the corner of her eye, Leah spotted Nokota looking nervous and staring at the floor. "Is something wrong, Nokota?"

The young nun became flustered as she spoke. "N-no Miss Stroud! I-I'm fine." She clenched a large, silver cross to her chest, growing pale as Leah continued to stare at her. "I-is there something amiss?"

Leah let her eyes linger for a few more seconds before breaking eye contact. "No, nothing's wrong." She began panning over the rest of the rag tag bunch of fleshy magical girls, before setting her sights on Maria. "You're all probably wondering why you were sent instead of the Heavy Ironforms." Each of them nodded slightly, Ashlin giving a small shrug. "Reason being, you all can regenerate wounds and limbs. Our metal bodies, though much tougher, need to be replaced and properly repaired on the Olympia in case of severe damage." A few taps on the desk and more images started scrolling, this time of the ruined forms of the Fourths girls.
>>
>>35155219

"We can do minor repairs here, but as you've seen coming in..." Her voice grows soft for a moment. "...we don't have simple repairs to deal with." Another desk tap and the projector disappeared into its cold, steel coffin once again. "But I do want to ask, why'd the Warsmith send you, Miss Williams?"

Nokota fumbled her words again, caught off guard at the formality. "Oh, uh, umm. I-I was sent as a negotiator of sorts. I can speak the local languages a bit and can try to reason with them if the situation calls for it!" Her face beamed with pride at the last statement, as if she was being given praise.

"That's if the locals will even LISTEN to reason."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next few hours went by quickly as the six girls discussed how watch duty was going to be dished out; 12 hour shifts of two girls with the Ironform girls as backup for attacks. At Leah's behest, the girls settled into their sleeping quarters, set away from the other buildings.
Natalie plopped down on the small cot assigned to her, a light pomf coming from it. "Ah, feels good to finally fucking lay down. Sleep can't come soon enough." Patting the pillow, she laid her head down and closed her eyes. "That Leah seems like a nice lady!"
"Oh, if you'll excuse me ladies, I have some private matters to tend to." Nokota shifted her headpiece, making sure it was snug before bowing. "I'll be back shortly."
As the metallic click of the door closing signaled her leave, the room suddenly became silent, each girl lost in thought. Maria broke the silence, speaking what seemed to be on everyone's mind. "Private matters? We just got here."
>>
>>35155242
Edea piped up, sliding off her black hiking boots. "Well, she DID seem kinda unnerved when Leah mentioned that false Lady. Maybe it has something to do with that?"
"Could be." A clattering of boots hitting floor came from Natalie's bunk. "She pops up at the Olympia shortly after Walpurgisnacht and starts preaching about the Blessed Lady. And now the news of a so called false Lady?" A scowl grew on her face as she unbuckled her hood. "Sounds really fucking fishy."
Ashlin, silent for the past few hours, snapped at the suggestion. "She's not doing anything wrong and you know it! Maybe she needed to talk to Leah alone? Doesn't mean she's doing anything suspicious, she's too nice for that!"
Natalie growled back at her, malice oozing out of every word. "So what? Nice little bitches such as her make me sick, and it's usually 'cause they hide shit like that." A swift punch to her pillow failed to quell her anger. "And just because she saved you on the chopper doesn't mean you should go and start licking her cunt."
For a moment, a glare of pure hate shot between Ashlin and Natalie, the former having reached her limit. "You're j-just je-jealous!" Tears started to well up in Ashlin's eyes, her anger boiling over into tears.
"Jealous of what?" Natalie slid off her bunk, and stood before Ashlin mere centimeters away. The silver eyed girl looked down, being a few inches taller. "Pray tell, why would I be jealous of that fucking mixed whore? That nun bit doesn't hide a fucking thing." Leaning forward, Natalie began pushing Ashlin back, pressing her forehead against the latter. "If you have something to say, then fucking say it."
>>
>>35155270
"Miles!" The booming voice of Maria echoed in the small room, silencing everything. "If I have to tell you to calm your shit again, you WILL NOT like it. Understand me?!"
"Y-yes ma'am." Natalie's eyes quickly darted to the floor as she mumbled. "Fuckin' bitch."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

+Is everything going as planned, my child?+

+Yes, my lady. They don't know my true intentions. And I pray it stays that way.+ Nokota shifted on her knees as she prayed before the ruined statue. +Do I still have your blessing?+

+You will always have my blessing, child. Now go. And let not a single non-believer tarnish her name.+

+As you command.+ Nokota stood, flashing her soul gem back into the pearl white oval choker it was before.

"May the true Blessed Lady guide my path."

Yeah, this has actually been an in-universe thing for a LONG time - at least a year, maybe a year and a half. We didn't really have any reason for it to come up with Chiaki until the inauguration, but it was planned to factor into the Second stuff pretty heavily, but the approach I tried back then didn't really click with me (to the point where I might just rewrite that first chapter and tag the first go as completely noncanon).

Decu also requested that we not go into it at all until it was explained to Chiaki at this point, although that wasn't the plan back then.
>>
>>35155618

Then why was it used in Attarous writeup?

It was pointedly kept as an unexplained (to the reader) anomaly in those events, with the intent that it would become clear (and the extent to which Heather is a COLOSSAL RETARD along with it) once Chiaki got the explanation.

Not that she didn't deserve it, but is Heather really going to be okay?
>>
>>35155834
I read Wendy's, but Prose Magica didn't really grab me early on, and by the time Attarou started writing I'm pretty sure we had so many writefags that I just kind of started to ignore writeups that weren't Wendy's.
>>
>>35155838
Especially the ones that focus on the obscure Officios, like Ratmie's Riddle of Witch Flesh. I don't know if the Twelfth have ever been mentioned in the main threads, much less expanded upon, and Ratmie does a really interesting job building up an Officio we've haven't seen.

I've found that, the more write ups I read, the more my enjoyment of the main threads increases.
>>
>>35155910
This is basically Decu's goal for theml: to flesh out the universe that Chiaki might not really get to experience normally.

I mean, Wendy's stuff has turned more and more relevant and whether that's good, bad, or me being some sort of questjacking harpy depends on who you ask, but for the most part, that was the goal to begin with.
>>
>>35155900
Prose Magica does have bit of a slow start, but I'd recommend holding on until at least the end of the 1st arc (so around chapter 17 or 18). Archival does a really neat job with character development, and so I found the climax and resolution of that arc to be an amazing reading reading experience.
