You're angry, you think. That's why your fists are clenched, your teeth gritted, and your eyes narrowed. You're angry because you can't channel that anger into something constructive, something like bringing death and destruction upon the two Angels that are currently standing motionless on the monitor in the nondescript waiting room outside the infirmary. Rei, Shinji, and Mari are laid up inside it, Rei with water in her lungs, Shinji and Mari with feedback wounds from their Evangelions. Asuka is sitting next to you in silence, while Misato stands in front of the monitor.

Unbidden, a boy comes to mind. A young Welsh boy, living near Hereford. His father was in the Regiment and his mother was a nurse at the local hospital. He earned himself pocket money by blacking boots and sharpening blades, refilling magazines. Small, helpful tasks. You can't recall his name, but something about the way Asuka is looking at you looking at the Angels brings him to mind.

“You want to kill them, don't you.” It's a statement, not a question. You give it all the answer it deserves by ignoring it. Sustained artillery bombardment in conjunction with vast amounts of chemical weapons and a couple of N2 mines dropped on them has stopped them, for now. Of course you want to kill them. But you're angry, for now, because that's all you can do, is be angry. Angry at your body for not responding as fast as it used to. Angry at your hands, even though you have no reason to. Because they're going to slow down. They won't be as lightning fast as you need them to be, one day. And you hope that day isn't near.

Your lips curl into a silent snarl, canines showing. You refrain from punching the wall, though. If you break your hands now, it'll simply speed the inevitable. So you sit and stare with silent hate and disgust for the enemy, for the Children, for not being strong enough to stop the enemy. For yourself, for getting old, for being not fast enough, not smart enough, not bloody GOOD eno-
>>
“Don't beat yourself up.” Misato's rounded on you, and her face is filled with pity. For yourself or the kids? “You know we can't do anything.”

“But that's fucking shit,” you tell her softly, voice not rising above a conversational tone. “Smartest minds of the decade, century, millenia, even. You're telling me we couldn't figure out how to stick adults into the machines?”

“Of course not.”

“I still say that's shit.” You wonder if white hot anger can become cold anger. It doesn't matter, you decide. You can't channel your anger into mind-bullets and kill the Angels with.

“You're entitled to your opinion, Cryan.” Yeah, you are. So is she. But you're disgusted. Whether with yourself or with the kids for not being able to put up the kind of fight necessary... It's probably you.

“Stick me in a cargo plane with a couple of N2s,” you change the subject. “It worked once, it'll work again.”

“We can't,” Misato tells you as she turns to stare at the monitor again. “We used the last of the stocks in the country stopping them there. More are being shipped from the United States and Europe, but they'll be a while before they arrive.”

“We're fighting a war for the continued existence of humanity, and you're telling me we can't get around UN red tape concerning weapons of mass destruction? Jesus.” You stand and begin pacing, feeling like a caged tiger. Two sets of eyes swivel to follow you, one blue, one hazel. Rei should have been fine, you think. You pulled her from the water fast enough. She should have been fine. It repeats itself in your head, an echoing mantra that you don't know if you truly believe.

On the monitor, you can see little ants of infantrymen and engineers digging field fortifications, trenches and foxholes and fighting positions for armored vehicles. You wouldn't want to be the infantryman trying to stick to his piece of dirt in the fight that's going to follow.

>>
Something inside you is itching to try your luck, to try and force one of the kids' Evangelions to bend to your will, to recognize you as lord and master, and then deliver all of your hate and rage upon them.

But something is telling you that it would end badly for you, and not to try your luck. So you don't try your luck. You shove a cigarette, Turkish tobacco, into your mouth, but don't light it. Hospitals, and all that. Scowling, you suspect this might be what expectant fathers feel like. Except you're not expecting anything but bad news, aren't you?

Feeling like you could use a shave and a shower, you check the black screen of your phone- yes, you're definitely looking haggard. There's a shower stall near the disinfectant smell of the infirmary, and the smell makes you remember Cairo and all of Cairo's horribleness.

[]Make your excuses. Maybe a shower will help you feel human.

EVERYBODY LISTEN UP! IT'S TIME TO REVEIW THE DREAMS FROM THE LAST THREAD!

>“Watch for he who weren't a father,”
He who weren’t a Father is referencing Gendo, who wasn’t a father figure to Shinji.

>“Be watchin' for de man what don't commit,”
Kaji fits as the most likely candidate for this warning. However, this is based on the assumption that the warnings are about different people, if not, then also Gendo.

>You wonder what the Hell is going on. These are old enemies, and you don't need any warning to be watchful, especially not from them.
This is Dec’s mind trying to justify ignoring these warnings, which, given the implications. Is a very bad call.

Something, perhaps that sixth sense or some deep seated instinct, both of which have served you well, tells you not to go anywhere. So you don't. You go to light the cigarette in your mouth, on autopilot, as it were, before you realize what you're doing. Stopping, you stare at the half-lit cigarette, smoldering and letting off thin tendrils of smoke. Taking it in your hand, you crush it, putting it out and ending its short life. You shove another cigarette into your mouth, and then shove your hands into your pockets.

The tension in the air is thick, and you could probably cut it with a knife, but you don't. Instead you resume your pacing, stalking between the standing Misato and the sitting Asuka, unlit cigarette in the corner of your mouth. You wonder why Commander Ikari or Subcommander Fuyutsuki aren't here. If you were a father, or grandfather figure, you'd be here. You'd be doing exactly what you're doing right now, pacing and tense with tension and anticipation, ready for something to happen.

So you wonder why the Commander isn't here for his son. What could he be doing that's more important than his only kid? And then the door you've been pacing in front of opens, and a tall Japanese man steps through. Hair graying, he ignores you and steps towards Misato.

“Captain Katsuragi? I'm glad you're here.” You take a step backwards and clench your fists inside your pockets.
>>
“I'm happy to say the news is largely good.” You don't let your inner triumph show, but if the news is largely good then the kids are largely okay, aren't they? “We'll be keeping the First here for another day of observation, but we've treated the feedback injuries sustained by the Third and Fourth. They were relatively minor- no stab wounds, just quite a few minor burns and cuts. They'll be right as rain in a few days.”

“How soon can we get them back in the fight?” Your face slides from the growing grin to a look of horror. She can't honestly expect to send them out so soon- You're conveniently ignoring the fact you've fought worse (to scale) odds, while more injured.

>>
>>35159061
Tangfag, get back to writing the update or write smut for me already
>>
>>35159084
Generally three-year conscripts get to do the raping, as they're going to be in longer (or have been in longer.) IIRC, the Russian military also doesn't depend on sergeants and professional NCOs as hard as the West does, so their NCOs are just conscripts, like everyone but the officers.

So instead of the NCOs stopping the anal rape, you've got the NCOs DOING the anal rape.

Is of extremely homosex, comrades.

DECLAN X RIFLE OF 7.62 X 51 NATO

So basically, Russia is a country that hates itself so much that they project their self hatred on to other countries, like Ukraine for example. They claim that other countries are being run by homofascists while their regulars are busy being homos in support of a fascist.

If there's any justice, we'll starve the Russians and any rusaboos to death, and even if they nuke everything, things like nuclear winter have been disproven due to gross inaccuracies in the models behind those theories. We might be a couple billion people less in the world, but we will also be without Russians. A net gain in the end, really.

I meant commissioned smut but that's fine with me.
>>
>>35159183
They're not regulars. They're conscripts serving a two or three year term. The United States and most of NATO differ in that their militaries are entirely all-volunteer.

Therefore they're automatically more professional, because everyone wants to be there. Or at least they did when they signed the contract.

For fuck's sake, Russia just switched from FOOT WRAPS to SOCKS a few years ago. Professional my ass.

“You're going to send them back into a fight against something that took out three Evangelions and hospitalized the pilots?” Your interruption isn't viewed with anything resembling anything positive from anyone except Asuka. She's looking why she can't figure out why you'd care. Shoving the sudden urge to hug her down, you coolly accept the heated gaze of the doctor and the surprised look of Misato.

“They're kids,” you plow forward. “You can't fucking send them out to fight again. They need to rest and heal.”

“They're the only pilots we have, Declan. Asuka can't do it all on her own as much as she'd like to.”

“I can too,” the redhead interrupts, but no one pays her any mind.

“So keep up an artillery bombardment until the kids heal!”

“You're a military man, Dec. You know there's not enough shells or guns on this green Earth to do that for as long as we'd like to let the pilots heal.”

“If I may,” the doctor interrupts, a distinctly George Takei looking fellow, and clears his throat. “While I'm not going to advise you on your job like you've been trying with mine, perhaps you could try chemical weapons? As for the Children, three days at the most, before they're ready to go back out, Captain Katsuragi. I'd put it a half a day, depending on how they feel.”

“Good,” Misato says quietly. “When they're ready, Mari and Asuka will take the lead this time. Shinji and Rei will be in support.”

You stare. Quietly, you turn on your heel and leave the room. The hallway greets you with its neutral ivory color. Glancing to your left, and then your right, you head for the bathroom down the hall. Heart pounding, you stalk down the hall and then slip inside.

Like all institutional bathrooms, it's nondescript. Multiple urinals, multiple stalls, multiple sinks and mirrors. Taking a stall for yourself, you go ahead and take a leak. After you zip up, you stare at the blank tile for a moment before your fist slams into the one in front of your face, cracking it neatly in half. Your knuckles are cut up, now, and beginning to bleed. But punching something felt good. It felt cathartic.

So you punch the wall again, this time with your other hand. It hurts, but it's a good hurt. And with luck, you'll be dead before injuring your hands like this comes back to bite you on the ass. But for now, you turn and walk out of the stall and to a sink, to wash your hands.

The face that stares back at you out of the mirror is familiar, but it's not natural. A couple of days' worth of facial hair growth, no sleep, and an unhealthy dose of stress has left you looking like you need a bullet more than some rest.

Swallowing the bitter taste of defeat, you go back to the waiting room and find Misato and the Doctor gone. Instead Asuka is watching the monitor. She looks up at you when you enter again.

From the series, all that was needed was a single N2 Depth charge.

Not to mention, Israfel is one of the weakest angels in the series, barely denting the EVA's armor plating, and it also has some of the weakest defensive abilities. Against four EVAs it should have been toast.

I mean, I get we're trying to be a bit more grimderp and operator here, but if this, one of the weakest angels in the series, flat out curbstomped most of the EVAs we're going to have some serious trouble when we go to Sahaquiel, and oh god Zeruel is going to shit on everything.
>>
>>35160915
By that time, NERV would have found some way to effectively weaponise Cryan against the Angels, killing them in stile while trashing his liver.
>>
>>35160915
I never said it was the Angel that took out the kids, now did I? Fact of the matter is when you throw untrained or largely untrained amateurs into huge death machines, you're going to be lucky if most of them walk away with minor injuries and not, you know, LIFE RUINING CRIPPLING AND DEATH.

It's actually more plausible the kids fucked up trying to keep track of each other, the Angels, and the allied forces in the area. Hence the disproportionate response to the Angels. The military saw "Oh shit the kids are getting fucked up time to fuck shit up if we can" and did the best they could. The best they could happened to be pretty overkill, except, you know. They can't touch Cores.
>>
>>35160998
>Fact of the matter is when you throw untrained or largely untrained amateurs into huge death machines
Which is a total of Mari and Shinji. Asuka was most likely in training as Shinji was since the time she was confirmed to be an Eva pilot, Rei would be the same there too. That means several years of training there.
Shinji and Mari? Shinji has at best about 3-5 weeks training and field experience, Mari, maybe longer, maybe completely shorter.

>It's actually more plausible the kids fucked up trying to keep track of each other
Isn't that why they have a video and audio link between the pilots and the people in charge of them, basically at all times?
> The military saw "Oh shit the kids are getting fucked up time to fuck shit up if we can" and did the best they could.
The military that, in 100% of the time that had appeared in the series, was under the control of NERV post-Sachiel? I don't see why they'd be breaking orders at all.

You take a moment to consider. Yes, you were a dick. You might even say you had been a raging dick. But that doesn't excuse the fact Asuka was trying to start something for no reason. But then, neither does that excuse the fact that despite she's a university level genius, she's also only thirteen and still prone to acting like the fucking idiot most teenagers are.

“Beg your pardon,” you say briefly. She looks at you, and you look at her steadily. Eventually her gaze shifts aside.

“You look like shit,” she says, ignoring your apology. That's fine, you'll drop it.

“I know. It's been a rough few days. So how'd you wind up unhurt?” Asuka scoffs and continues to study the industrious digging in of the conventional forces.

“Shinji and the Fourth were accidental. He and the Fourth were approaching one of the hostiles from opposite directions, a pincer movement, ja?”

“Ja,” you nod. “They accidentally shot each other instead of the Angel?”

She nods in response. “No communication, even with the links. Amateurs,” she dismisses disdainfully. “When they knocked each other out, the Angels pounced on the First and I. Her unit was damaged, but not horribly badly, and she managed to eject. I withdrew, then.”

“So if Mari and Rei have been training for this almost as long as you have, why weren't any of you talking?”

“If I had to guess,” which is something she doesn't do often, if ever, the tone of voice implies, “I'd say Mari just didn't remember and Rei is used to not having to.”
>>
“So,” you surmise. “They trained you all as individuals, didn't they? They didn't bother realizing you'd probably be in the field with at least one other unit?”

She shrugs. “Right?”

“If we went into the field as woefully unprepared as you all seem to be, even with the training you, the Fourth, and the First have received, we'd have all died,” you tell her. “That's ridiculous.” You suspect that someone deliberately skipped over the team training portion of the curriculum. That, or someone was horribly incompetent.

You fucking what?
Unless they were handling positron rifles or a lance of longinus there's no weaponry which can knock down, hell, fucking injure at that, an Evangelion with it's AT field up. Much less INJURED to the degree where their EVAs are damaged, and that their wounds are visible on their human forms.

“So,” you try again, since the conversation has died. “How bloody long have you been here?”

“Since I got back from the field, yesterday.”

“You gotten any sleep?”

“No,” she tells you with a glance in your direction. “I haven't. Neither have you, since at least the night before last, if the way you're carrying yourself is any indication.”

“Nope,” you say with a falsely cheery grin. “This team-work- Well, lack of team-work. That's gotta change. You're going to help me with that. But first, why'd the military react with an artillery bombardment? As far as I can tell from your story, you kids were still in the killbox.”

Asuka shrugs. “I dunno,” she says, and then adds quietly: “I may have requested a danger close mission because Shinji was panicking.”
You look at her, hard. “Why? What bloody possessed you to do that? You were still in the fucking killbox too.”

“I don't know,” she says again. Clearly uncomfortable, she changes the subject: “What are we going to do to work on the team-work issue?”

“I could run you guys through a live-fire kill house to be a sadistic ass-hole,” you say grimly. “But that would wind up with you all dead. Instead, I think it's going to be something not so dangerous.”

“Paintball,” you say. “Against the men I picked to help guard you. The four of you against two. We'll go until you can beat us five times in a row.”

And then you grin. The nature of special forces training in the Western world means it's largely transferable. Some of the slang is different, sure, but the skills- all are based off what the SAS pioneered in the 1960's and 70's fighting the IRA during the Troubles. Room-clearing, flashbangs, coming from different directions- Basic stuff. But it had to be thought of and codified into a unified doctrine.

And it was largely the SAS that did it. So you grin, because these kids need teamwork beaten into them, and compared to live-fire kill houses where the walls are shooting back, paintball is child's play.

“Paintball? A kid's game? Are you serious?” The disbelief on Asuka's face contrasts with your grin, and you begin pacing.

“Yes,” you say. “I can't use chalk-rounds with you kids, don't want to damage you, but paintball will work. It doesn't hit as hard, but it's still fast-paced enough to be confusing and hectic. Close enough for government work, as it were.”

“Like you'll win,” she says. “You'll be going up against the great Asuka Soryhu, remember?”

“I won't forget it,” you say. “Underestimating the opposition is a mistake, though.”

“I know that,” she tells you.

“I'm sure you do. Go get some sleep,” you tell her. “I'll keep watch here.” She nods and bids you goodbye, and you settle into her seat. Can't do anything until the others are well enough to run around in the woods. Or would an office building be better? You shake off the thought for now, and settle in to wait.

Misato and the doctor have disappeared for now, probably to talk. You take the remote control from the seat beside and switch the monitor to the news. It isn't anything actually news- authorities are requesting everyone keep calm and evacuate the projected areas while there's time. You switch to a day-time television channel and they're trying to sell some kind of booklet. You turn the volume down and lean back, trying to lull yourself into a meditation state.

It works, and you fall asleep. Instead of solid dreams, there's simply a corridor with one door at the end. You attempt to turn around, but can't. Before you can reach the end of the hall, however, a noise wakes you.

It's the scuffing of a shoe against tile. Reflex causes you to go for your gun as your eyes open, and you blink hard for a moment. Your eyesight settles with your pistol's sights aimed at Misato. Swallowing, you holster the gun and offer a rueful smile.

“Tense, are you?”

“Bad dreams and a few bad days,” you try to ease back. “Apologies.” She waves a hand in your direction.

“I understand. Why don't you go back to the house and get some rest?”

“Can't,” you shrug. “Told Asuka I'd be here when she got back. Someone's gotta be here for the kids.”

“They're not in mortal danger, you know.” She sounds slightly amused, but you shrug again.

“I know. But I promised, didn't I?” You take off your coat and then stretch out across the rows of chair, placing it on top of you chest. The ceiling is nondescript off-white, just like the walls. It's a very common color for hospitals, you've noticed. The smell of disinfectant isn't as strong, disguised by the black linen's smell of you- sweat, tobacco, and a hint of whiskey. Everyone buys summer weight suits these days. Eternal summer will do that to a clothing industry.

“So you're just going to sleep here like a homeless person?”

“Probably yes,” you say. “I made a promise, I intend to keep it, I'd like to be here when the kids get out.”

“Don't forget, you've got a parent-teacher conference you promised Shinji you'd attend as an uncle on Thursday.”

“I haven't forgotten,” you say easily. “I'll be there. Will you be going?”

“No, I won't be able to make it. There's an industry meeting in Tokyo-2 I've got to attend.”
>>
"I understand," you say sympathetically. "You can go ahead and go, you know. I'll be fine here."

"Right," Misato says. "Enjoy your... Enjoy your chairs." She turns to leave and you settle back into your not at all comfy chairs to wait.
