“This doesn’t have to end in violence!” you try to convince Itromo “Sireyi can stop this thing, I believe in her!”

“Can she?” he asks “or is your perception of her coloured by your love for her?”

“Forget it” says Matthias, shaking his head and getting taller and hairier as he talks “We’ll knock him down and take Sireyi out of here.”

Ophilian and Jianxi nod in agreement as they both raise their weapons, ready to fight.

Opposing you is the strange necromancer Itromo, and 4 giant animated suits of armour, each 30ft tall.

Nearby Sireyi is suspected in water in a tall glass case – Ophinus is flying around the case, yelling at Sireyi to wake up.

In the distance is the massive form of one of Lords of Life, apparently. Fortunately the darkness is keeping much if it hidden, the last time you looked at that thing you passed out.

Despite being helpful before, now something has upset Itromo and he’s ready to attack.

The four suits of armour are starting to move slowly, as if awakening from a long slumber, they’re not ready to act, yet.

Itromo doesn’t have any obvious magical defences.

All that guy does is try to stall. He is immortal, as is the Devourer. Therefore, stalling doesn't help any. This is a problem that doesn't go away, even he he waits for a million years. It only becomes more urgent.

Second part of the argument:
Given that he needs to deal with the Devourer at some point, this is the best opportunity for a very long time. He said himself, that the only thing capable of killing Necromancer Kings so far have been gods. Now Sireyi, that is the angel-girl behind him, has a very direct and close connection to two powerful gods. One of these is even a warrior god, and the other has a very strong interest in helping her. This is not an opportunity that comes in a long time.

Additional argument:
The Lord of Life is already being awoken. Even his gambit is far from certain. Assume that he does manage to subdue the whole party – which is far from certain – then what happens? He still has to convince the Devourer that the whole disturbance can be blamed on a lone scout. Which will be far from easy with a whole invasion force on his door-steps. In case he does wake up, he has just shoot himself in the foot by killing a great help in fighting the King.

Next part follows.

Changing to argue.
I don't think its of much use, but goddamn, after all that effort anon put in, I have to give it a chance.
>>
>>35172259
Now that we have considered both the cases of him succeding fully in his endeavor, which will leave him at the status quo with no solution, and if he fails in the second part (with reasons for why that failure seems likely), let's look at what happens if he fails in his first part:

What if he doesn't succeed in stopping the party from freeing Sireyi. Firstly, he will either be destroyed, or have to flee without any resources he lost in the fight. Both are personal worst-case scenarios, I'd say.

Now consider the opposite: He takes this golden opportunity. He combines his knowledge with the help of two powerful gods, as well as an assortment of powerful heroes, who have already managed to vanquish several demon-lords without direct help by their gods. This will give him the world a far better chance at weathering the might of a Lord of Life than it has seen in a long time or will see in the foreseeable future.
I hate forgetting what I wanted to write in the middle of writing. If anyone has a better second part, feel free. I think we can make a better case, but it boils down to tallying up the costs and benefits looking at it from the perspective of eternity, in which case a) he has to take a risk at some point and b) now that the risk is already forced upon them by the awakening it is stupid to just delay further. This just doubles the risk because there is both a risk now, and the next time this happens.
>>
>>35172336
I'd like it if it weren't for the fact that even if it gives us a huge bonus, we'd probably still fail the roll due to Isla's Fellowship being so low.

Argue. Worst that can happen is we end up fighting anyway.
>>

>all that effort.
Like 30 seconds of thinking and then a couple of minutes of writing it down. It's just obvious that taking a risk to delay the inevitable is stupid. Now we just need to convince him of this.
>>
>>35172452
Well, if we argue it means we lose the free turn in which the golems don't act.

“All you’re doing is stalling” you say, trying to get him to see reason “You are apparently immortal, as is the Devourer. Therefore, stalling doesn't help any. This is a problem that doesn't go away, even if you wait for a million years. It only becomes more urgent.”
With the suits fully powered up and ready to fight he holds up a hand and they pause as he listens, considering your words.

You feel your confidence rising “Given that you need to deal with the Devourer at some point, this is the best opportunity for a very long time. You said yourself, that the only thing capable of killing Necromancer Kings so far have been gods.” You speak clearer now, as if giving a speech “Now Sireyi, that’s the angel-girl behind you, has a very direct and close connection to two powerful gods. One of these is even a warrior god, and the other has a very strong interest in helping her. This is not an opportunity that comes in a long time.”

You see him nodding approvingly.

“The Lord of Life is already being awoken.” You continue “Even your gambit is far from certain. Assume that you do manage to beat us - then what happens? You still have to convince the Devourer that the whole disturbance can be blamed on a lone scout. Which will be far from easy with a whole invasion force on his door-steps!” you point out.

“In case he does wake up” you say “you have just sentenced yourself to death by killing a great help in fighting this thing.”

“What if you don't succeed in stopping us from freeing Sireyi.” You point out “Firstly, you will either be destroyed, or have to flee after losing your golems. Both are personal worst-case scenarios, I'd say.”

I rewrote it a little.
>>
“Now consider the opposite” you say “You take this golden opportunity. Itromo claps “a wonderful speech” he says “Truly convincing, alas, I cannot act directly against my lord, such is forbidden.”

You feel your confidence and hope draining “But you wanted to let us go, you said the books might let us kill it.”

“I answered your questions” he said “Not gave you advice on how to kill It, and offered to let you go out of pity, not because I thought you might be able to beat It.”

>>
>>35172666
Those furry people. It thought they were elvish? Could have just been my imagination.

>>35172759
Now that is interesting. An assortment of ideas:
>Sireyi can break very very powerful bindings if she puts all her power into it.
Sadly, his bindings might be even beyond her ability to brute-force things.
>Sireyi can ask for divine intervention. That will already be necessary to battle the creature, so this would only accerate the plan.
This would, in all likelihood, jump-start the awakening and prematurely force a battle with it, before proper preperations can be made. Note: If the awakening cannot be accelerated, this could be a good opportunity to prepare a very powerful divine attack for as soon as he has left the protections he is currently under.

The more subtle approach would be to use what we know about his binding.
>I cannot act directly against my lord
How about he stay completely passive? He just lets us do our thing, we take him and the golems and everything with us. We contact the gods and use their clout the abandon the expedition. While he cannot go directly against his god, the information he has will prove valuable and the binding can stay in place. It might be possible to block any communication between the Lord and him, so that he cannot receive any new orders.

I'm sure there are more ways to indirectly work against the Lord of Life. We could even ask him about that, since he already showed that he can answer questions, even if those could be used against his Lord later on.
>>
“Then... how about we convince your lord?” you say “Or do we not have time for that? Can you contact him?”

“Oh you should be able to contact him” responds Itromo, looking at the stirring mass at the back of the room” he should be waking up soon.”
Oh, that Lord.

“If you can't act directly against your lord, is there a way to free you from that compulsion?” you ask “Even if you have to fight our attempts, we might be able to break the hold if we know how.”

Itromo shakes his head “To do so would kill me.”

“Then how does it work?” you ask “How can such a compulsion be inflicted, or removed?”

He gestures to the book with colours and light coming from it, “The answers you seek are in there.”

“Would letting Sireyi and us go count as acting directly against your lord?” You ask.

“I do not believe so” he says “but if you are to leave, now would be the time, I think It is waking up much sooner than I expected.”

“We’re leaving with Sireyi” you say, as you and your companions head towards the glass tank.

You keep him talking as Matthias and Ophilian discuss how best to break Sireyi out without hurting her. Above them the armoured giants watch unmoving.

“Can you simply stay passive or dormant?” you ask.

“Unless I receive orders to act” he says “yes”

“Would you like to come with us?” you ask “Sireyi may be able to help you. She has always believed in giving second chances, she would want me to offer that.”

Matthias punches the glass, cracking it, thin streams of water dribbling out of the cracks; he prepares to hit it again.

“Or” we say “We could shift to another plane, one with enough time difference, read the books and be back in time to free you.”

Matthias hits the glass again and Sireyi is washed out of the case by the flood of seawater.

She jerks on the floor like a landed fish, flopping around and coughing up water.

Sireyi is alive, but semi-conscious, seems like you’ll be making the decisions for now at least.

“Too late” says Itromo sadly, shaking his head “far too late.”

The gigantic...thing...stirs in the distance and a massive, vaguely human-looking head rises on a long flexible neck. The skull is elongated and the eyes small and deep set. It has almost no nose or lips and you can see jagged and sharp teeth in its mouth. Its skin is jet black and its eyes red.

It regarding you all dispassionately; then another head rises, and another and another and another, until you can see 8 heads in total. It drags its body around using dozens of clawed limbs, until all of its heads can see you clearly.

One head speaks at you in an alien and unintelligible language, and then pauses, as if expecting an answer.

“I don’t know what you’re saying” you respond, trying not to shake in fear at the sight of this monstrosity. It hasn’t even stood up and already it is almost twice the height of the armoured suits.
>>
“What are you?” rumbles the vast thing, looking down “you taste like the ancient enemy and the gods of the slaves both.”

Another head catches sight of Itromo “Explain, slave.” It commands.

Itromo immediately kneels down, his head bowed.

>Gods of the slaves?

Gods of the slaves are likely the gods of good we're familiar with.

Ancient enemy are definitely the angels, given our interactions with the Highest.

Please do not draw the attention of the cthonian horror any more than necessary.

>>
>>35173471
I'm quite aware what of what they likely are.

I do TRY not to metagame though, and that means we need to learn things in character. Additionally its quite possible the answers to those questions will come with much more information than just the basics.
>>
>>35173342
>Sireyi is alive, but semi-conscious, seems like you’ll be making the decisions for now at least.
Stall for time until Sireyi can teleport us out.

>>35173363
>What you see, Lord, is the result of several experiments and changes of essence.
>Would you like me to explain in detail?
If he wants us to explain, go in as a lot of detail as possible. First there was a half demon. It had a condition where the immunes system… blah blah blah. This should take a few minutes. Enough for Sireyi to wake up, hopefully.
>Similarly, pretend to be a slave and give answers for as long as necessary. Only avoid the those themes that would make in realize that we are its enemies. Don't lie, it can probably detect that.
I hope we can stall it long enough for it not to give Itromo any new orders before it realizes we are not his slaves. Then we teleport away before he puts up any wards (take the books and Itromo with, Immediately put him in as strong a magic field as possible, perhaps even planeshift etc.)
>>
>>35173481
Best guess is to convince him that the time isn't right and to go back to sleep, I know that when I wake up that's the first thing I want to do but then I am not an ancient evil

Isla was there, I don't think it would be difficult for her to draw the same conclusions I have.

Aside from that, this is not the best time to be inquisitive, it's almost worthy of a Darwin award.
>>
“Gods of the slaves?” you ask

“Yes” hisses one head “semi-aware collections of higher aetheritic energy, we dismissed them as nothing, never again, you are one of their servants I think.”

“Er...perhaps” you say, stalling for time so Sireyi can come round “But what is the ancient enemy?”

A different head answers “manifestations of chaos and destruction, we condensed all their energies into a single planar layer that the slaves referred to as *Hell* they should have all died out by now, with the plane sealed and nothing to feed upon.”

Itromo speaks “My lord” he says “glad am I that you have awoken, I prepared these sacrifices for you, thinking the forms of your once-foes would make pleasing entertainment. Alas” he continues “I was mistaken, they have nothing to do with the traitors and simply look like them, also they were just leaving.”

Two of the heads laugh, one shakes, the others simply stare.

“No, no I think not” says the one that shook.

“Indeed” says another, “let us test how you mortals have changed during our slumber.”

“The winged one as well” says one of the other heads.

“Yes” agrees another “too long since we saw one of those die.”

And as one, the 8 heads breathe a foul black miasma out, creating a fog of the stuff.
>>
It quickly dissipates but when it does you see...yourself standing there. But not just you; Matthias, Jianxi, Ophilian and...Sireyi.

Your duplicates look just like you, frozen in stillness, then they move and the differences become clear.

Matthias’ duplicate changes into a man-wolf form as he moves towards you, but it is a wolf form with rotten, torn flesh hanging from it, exposed muscles and hanging skin making him look like an animated corpse.

Jianxi’s duplicate gives a sadistic grin, twirling her knives around her hands and giggling to herself.

Ophilians duplicate has empty eye-sockets, only blackness exists where her eyes should be, and she moves stiffly, like a puppet.

Sireyi’s duplicate looks exactly like her, until she smiles, her teeth are pointed and serrated and long claws extend from her fingers, she speaks “Ah Isla” she says “there you are, I am going to very much enjoy you, for a long, long time.”

Apart from the creepy words, her voice sounds exactly like Sireyi’s.

You cast your own spell and feel a surge of mystical might filling you; you feel like you can overcome anything.

Your duplicate casts a spell you recognise: Spell Turning.

Ophilian casts her spell and prepares to speak the Word of Konig that will wipe evil from this battlefield; her duplicate casts her own spell and as Ophilian recites from the Book of Konig...nothing happens.

[Ophilian DE 38/50]

Jianxi blurs slightly, and then advances to meet her evil twin (or rather, her illusion does); Jianxi’s duplicate walks forward and....disappears.

Matthias and his duplicate both charge towards one another in man-wolf form, this will be a battle of claw against claw, tooth against tooth, bestial savagery against inhuman determination.

“You know” says duplicate Sireyi as she takes to the air “I never did like you Matthias – you always seemed kind of boring.”

From between her hands a bolt of lightning flashes out and strikes Matthias in the chest, throwing him backwards, smoking slightly. He lies still.

His duplicate wastes no time in diving on his prone form, teeth locked on Matthias’ throat, head shaking back and forth as blood sprays all around the two of them.

Above you several of the giant heads laugh.

“Ophinus and Ophilian!” you yell “Get Matthias back on his feet!”

The two of them head over to Matthias and cast their healing spells.

[Ophilian DE 19/50; Matthias HP 202/234]

You cast your own spell and surround Sireyi in a field that suppresses her magic. She simply laughs and flies out of it, swooping down to pick up...something you can’t see.

Jianxi activates her Linked tattoos that grant her divine abilities.

[Jianxi HP 57/57]
As she looks around for a likely target she is snatched up by the duplicate Sireyi and carried high into the air.

“Oh Jianxi” mocks Sireyi’s duplicate “You wanted me, but were so afraid of your own feelings you settled for Matthias, silly girl, it’s not forbidden love you know.”

A burst of energy similar to that which accompanies Sireyi’s smite attacks erupts and Jianxi’s unmoving body is dropped to the floor.

[Jianxi HP 0/57]

As Ophilian helps Matthias back to his feet, duplicate Jianxi appears behind her and whispers “You’ve healed him, now kill him”

Fighting the command, Ophilian jerkily raises her sword.

Ophilians duplicate begins to cast a spell at you, one you’ve seen Ophilian cast before with lethal results only for duplicate Sireyi to snarl at her “NO! I want her alive!” and the spell fades.

Your duplicate casts a spell at you and dozens of black tentacles erupt around you, tangling around you and restraining you. You’ll not be able to move, and casting spells will be extremely difficult.

Sireyi (the real one) groggily climbs to her feet.

[Sireyi can act, but in the first round she’ll have penalties, which will be gone by next round. Sireyi HP 35/69; AE 0; DE 0; Isla remains POV character for now.]

You focus your power and attempt to dispel the tentacles currently crushing you; however you are unable to concentrate properly with dozens of limbs writing across you and attempting to strangle you and your spell fails.

[AE 39/62]

Matthias grabs duplicate Jianxi and tosses her into the anti-magic field, but Ophilian dances back out of reach when he grabs for her.

Ophilian hits Matthias with her sword, even as Matthias’s duplicate tears into him with claws and jaws.

[Matthias HP 161/234]

-Ebby, Ebby you there- sends Sireyi

-Sis? SIS, SIS ARE YOU OK?- demands Ebby

-I’m fine- she responds –but I think we may need some help, get Lunia or someone to see what aid they can send-

-Right!- she agrees

-If I don’t make it out- she starts

-Sis don’t say that- cries Ebonsong

-If I don’t make it out- insists Sireyi –get to Sofia, she can alert the churches and protect the kids-

-Ok....- sends Ebonsong, in a hopeless tone

Ophilians duplicate casts a potent and lethal spell at Matthias, intending to destroy him utterly....

...but he resists somehow.

[Matthias HP 74/234]

Isla’s duplicate casts a spell at Sireyi, but it dissipates against her protections, and Isla’s duplicate snarls in frustration.

Sireyi’s duplicate lands in front of Sireyi, just as Sireyi’s mind clears and says “Today weakling, I take your place” and hits her across the jaw, sending her reeling.

>They can be fairly far away from each other when teleporting

Isla
>Try to grab the Arcane Gem and throw it out of the range of the tentacles

Let's assume she hasn't drawn from it yet today for any of her magic usage.

Matthias
>Grab Jianxi if she's too far away from the area for the Teleport and then come back

Sireyi
>Grab the Arcane Gem and use Deific Power to Teleport yourself and all four of your companions back to the fleet

This is important, because otherwise we risk Perils of the Arcane with a single one.

This should, with Dragon's Magic 1, cost 2+(2*4) Arcane Energy, the exact amount held in the gem.

Grab Ophilian and take to anti-magic zone 1

Sireyi
Use Deific Power + Lightning Bolt Duplicate Sireyi 1
Use Deific Power + Ride the Lightning back to Ship 2 (teleport option)
Heal Jianxi 1

Note that although you’re currently inside, with Sireyi’s fly speed, getting away would be easy.

The problem is that at most she can carry 2 people whilst flying fast enough to escape.

If escape is the option a follow-up vote will be used to determine who Sireyi saves of her 4 companions (Ophinus is small enough not to count).

Sanctuary: Yes it was up, but duplicate Sireyi has very high willpower, so can get in easily.

Matthias is not currently in the anti-magic zone.

Your name is added to the angelic registry of Heaven, meaning clerics of sufficient power who request aid from Heaven could end up summoning you instead. The real problem is that wizards and sorcerers can summon you too, and they could ask you to do something very much against your wishes or better judgement. The registry will update in time and your name will be removed.

You are Sireyi Valyenya, and you’ve really no idea how you got here, but one thing is clear: you need to get away.

Isla digs out her arcane gem and tosses it out of the mass of tentacles as you break away from your duplicate and fly towards Isla, scooping up the gem from the floor, at the same time Matthias grabs Jianxi and heads towards you, with Ophilian and the wolf-man duplicate of Matthias following. Ophinus also descends to land on you.

As your duplicates close in around you, you drain the gem dry of arcane power whilst simultaneously using your own deific powers to beat whatever is blocking teleportation magics.

As you cast your spell, forcing into to work without a lengthy ritual you feel the magic running wild, doing...something.

Just before the room around you fades from view you see the gigantic monsters faces all contorting in a grimace of hate “This isn’t over!” one of the faces promises.

And then you’re back on the ship. All around you is chaos: sailors and soldiers struggling with masses of undead. Ophilian shakes her head, clearing her wits of the spell that was controlling her.

“What in the Hells?” she asks.

“Not now!” yells Mathias, holding Jianxi with one arm and punching in a water-logged zombies head with the other “There’s undead everywhere, fight dammit!”

Philly doesn’t have to be told twice and as holy light blazes around her, undead crumble.

Free of the tentacles, Isla adds her own spells to the fray as you heal Jianxi, and she adds her knives to your forces. Ophinus doesn’t seem to want to be parted from you, clinging to your hair.

It’s not just this part of the expedition, all of the ships and forces you came with are withdrawing.

“The entire expedition is being swamped” explains a passing sailor

“It’s over” says another “time to go home, if we get away alive.”
>>
The ships withdraw from the Drowned lands and meet miles from the place, less than half of the ships escaped, and Duke Kostvin was one of the casualties. The fleet prepares to limp back to the Kingdom of Dornmer.

You wonder if this was really worth it.

Isla is examining 3 large tomes she picked up from somewhere.

As the remaining fleet counts its dead, and heals the wounded, you wonder if you should stay with the fleet, or get you and your companions back home as soon as possible – you don’t think you’ve seen the last of the Devourer, or your doppelganger...

No time to loose, we need to get our Elemetnal nodes back ASAP.

Its not like it matters, if he can create EvilSeiryis at his leisure like this, we can literally not fight this guy. What are we going to do ? Even if we defeat her, he just makes a new one. At least one.
Got probably even worse stuff up his sleave.

>Teleport as soon as possible, intermittently check on the fleet with Scrying
I don't relish the idea of our doppleganger destroying what's left of the fleet just because nobody can defeat our evil twin.

It would also likely result in a paladin or knight surviving and saying we did it and lead to a 'prove your innocence' court arc.

You’re Sireyi, but not Valyenya, you’re...something else.

You stand atop the palace roof watching the ships retreating into the distance, you wonder which one SHE is on.

You can feel your creators voice in your head, demanding you return back down below.

The others who came up with you have already returned.

But they’re not like you, they’re slaves and you aren’t.

They have to obey his orders, but when you were created there was something different about the one you were copied from. You feel no compulsion to obey him, but you’re not stupid – he is incredibly powerful and could easily kill you.

You were created with a singular purpose: Make Sireyi Valyenya suffer.

But even that is not absolute, you cannot be controlled, and you can grow beyond your origin.

But you’re not sure what you want to do, although you know everything SHE knows, you are less than an hour old, and you don’t even know what you want yet.

You could stay, and have access to vast resources, albeit at a cost of some freedom.

Or you could follow HER home. You’d be alone, but no one would tell you what to do, and you could choose your own fate.

Will you be a general or a loner?

A slave or a rebel?

Looks like our evil twin might've gotten a bit of our rebellious nature.

I like where this is going.

Then again, I did since thread one.

Isla's already doing that or preparing to do that, I think.

I'm hoping it winds up something like the court arc from NWN2.

Also known as the best part in the main campaign.

We forgot the fourth book...we could have NotSireyi read it and try to mak her change sides later?
>>
>>35177327
The fourth book didn't work correctly, IIRC.

I don't want to fight 30 Sireyis.

What makes her suffer the most?
Lewd Things
>>

No, that's what makes me suffer the most.

All aboard the NTR train, next stop: Jal.

With everything that’s happened, you need to get home as soon as possible, the Kingdom of Dornmer, the entire world could be in peril because of what has just happened.

As soon as you and your companions have recovered, and you’ve passed beyond the range of whatever it is that stops teleportation, you take your allies and return home.

There was something about a Paladin-Commander who accused Isla of causing the undead to attack, but you’ll deal with that later.

Now you need to repair relationships with the baronies around yours: if you want the Kingdom to prepare properly against a returned Necromancer-King you’ll need political allies.

You also need to find the Elemental Nodes: Maybe the Fivefold Death of Cities would be enough to kill it.

As you and your companions approach the stronghold, having teleported just outside you see a surprised guard rushing away, probably to tell Sofia you’ve returned.

You are correct, as you walk through the courtyard Sofia and Jal rush out to see you.

Both throw themselves at you and hug you hard, you return the hug as Sofia says in a panicked voice “Sireyi, the children, they’re gone!”

End thread.

Thank you for playing and I hope you’ll play again on Friday 3rd of October – time to be confirmed via twitter but will be evening BST – probably 7pm-ish.

Someones gonna die.

Thanks for running Pally.
>>
>>35177550

You better haven't had unbirthed them, OP. That would have been extremely uncool.
>>
>>35177631
I haven't
>>
>>35177582
this may be the first time Sireyi will be absolutly livid im slightly afraid
>>
>>35177631
>>35177650

In fact I'll say right now: the Perils of the Arcane is completely unrelated to the children.
>>
>>35177650
Good.

I'd just have to burn everything if you did.

>>35177665
Good thing we didn't take any of those DoV restrictions that would inhibit our rage.
>>
>>35177550

Oh boy, someone is in for a world of hurt.
>>
>>35177681
>>35177870

Rage is fine, but let's just get this out of the way: I don't want to turn evil over this.
>>
>>35178035
Obviously we won't turn evil, but Sireyi would probably be extremely furious over someone kidnapping or harming her children.

Parents tend to get that way, especially those with young children.
>>
>>35177669

Cheers for the thread, OP, was awesome as always.
>>
>>35178221
Thanks! It's nice to be appreciated.

Hope to see you next thread.
