Part 10

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, and you are retiring for the night. As a guest of Count Hugh of Jaffa, you had spent the day embroiled in conspiracy and the night entertained with a lively feast. On the morrow you would be joining the Count for a lion hunt but for now you would need to find your strength as you were still recovering from wounds taken in battle only four days past.

The room provided for you is spacious, a generous lot for a landless knight. A wide bed and oak chest at its foot, your arms and armour carefully set in the far corner. It was more lordly than knightly. Count Hugh treated his guests well.

It looked inviting. Good wine and good food, coupled with your drained health, made the pillows look quite inviting. Your boots were weights upon your feet making every step a slog and you'd like nothing more than a good sleep, even if the hour was still earlier than usual. You muffled a yawn with the back of your hand.

>>
>>35181261
I had my first legal beer three years ago (Ausfag here)
>>
>>35181284
Oh, well happy birthday then. Hopefully there's something unique for you today.
>>
With a lion's hunt on the morrow you think it best to retire immediately rather than put it off. Neither squire nor slave are there to assist you. You strip off alone, gingerly drawing the sleeve off your fractured arm. Your sword you loop by belt around the leg of the bed stand, and you draw yourself under the covers.

Sleep takes you quickly with a content and restful yawn. All this time of travel through the rocky dry lands of Jerusalem had made bed rest a rare but welcome treat.

You are awake too soon, with sunlight through your window and Hugo rousing you with a hand.

"Up, sir, up," he urged as you blinked sleep from your eyes.

"I'm awake," you say through a yawn, drawing from the bed. No sign of your slave still. Hugo had your clothes prepared.

As he dressed you he spoke a little of the night before. "There were jugglers brought out," he said, "And a bear that danced." A spectacle, but your mind was on the coming hunt. You had been hunting before, of course. You'd hunted bear and wolf, as well as deer and boar. But you'd never hunted properly the big cats of Asia and Africa, and you had heard they were cunning and dangerous foes.

A lion hunt was no casual matter. How should you dress?

> as if for war, with shield and armour

> as if for a common hunt, comfortable but protected
>>
>>35181539
>>35181531
Wouldn't you hunt lions with big spears or ranged weapons? A shield would be superfluous.
>>
>>35181727
These guys apparently did it with full battle equipment whenever they were bored of murdering Koreans.
>>
>>35181727
Probably would have saved Alain's ass.
>>
You decide to forgo excessive arms and armour, though you belt your new sword and wear your maile. As Hugo assists you to dress you think to ask.

"Have you seen Chihirizahd at all?"

He nods. "I saw her by the kitchens last night with Lord Baldwin of Ramla."

Hmm.

When you were dressed and fitted properly, you and your squire left for the courtyard. It was along the way that you saw your slave. Her hair was mussed and she was dressed in humbler clothes. She gave you a smile and slipped up close.

"I've news for you if you have the time," she spoke softly with her head down so none but you could hear, "Come find me in the stables before you depart."

And then she was gone again, shutting herself away in your room.

You had little else but to continue to the courtyard, where you found the assembled hunting party. Count Hugh had a clutch of spears in hand, his head wrapped under a shading cloth like some desert living Bedouin. He smiled to see you and handed you one of the spears.

A kennel master was present with long dogs in hand, big and short furred beasts with heavy jaws. Some local mastiff. Lord Baldwin and Pons were present, as was Sir Raymond and Orlando, but the others were retired. Men-at-arms were armed for the hunting, as well as squires. It was a large host of hunters, almost a small war band.

"Sleeping off too much wine," Count Hugh said of the lords unrepresented. "We shall be ready to leave in the hour. Take what preparations you must."

Also, checking out the character sheet. We should get Hugo a sword and some armor. All he's got now is a spear and gambeson.
>>
>>35182125
And we have plenty from the loot after the bandits, we should also buy him a gift for his birthday tomorrow. I was thinking about a really good quality knife
>>
>>35182117
It's not a matter of wasting time I don't doubt she has interesting news , I just doubt the security of her confiding in the stable & that if it's not important in terms of the hunt it could wait till later in the evening.
>>
You bid Lord Hugh his leave and he grants it easily. The stables aren't far, you slip in to them and wait only a while before Chihirizahd slips in with you. She has her hair covered under a tight wrapping and looked for all the world like a modest young Muslim woman, only her face bare. It was in a strange way appealing to see her so modestly dressed.

"M'lord," she said, slipping up beside you with a curtsy.

Before you talk you check to see if you are being listened in on, but a sweep of the stables says you are alone, with only blustering horses for company.

"You had something to tell me?" you asked.

She nodded. "Lord Ramla, he is a dangerous man," she said, "He is not all with his lord. I saw him this morning send off messenger birds, I believe in the direction of Jerusalem and another flying south. I did not read the full message, but I saw names, and yours was one of them."

A spy, perhaps for King Fulk or some other power in the Holy City.

But how exactly had she come to see this message be sent? You looked down on your slave, and she looked up at you. Only her face to show and it was much troubled by what she had said.

"How did you discover this?" you ask, though you suspected you already knew.

"Lord Ramla...took me to his bed last night," she said it with a slight hesitation, watching for your reaction, "I spied his scribbling in the predawn, and flounced over him to get a better read but he was suspicious and struck me away before I could do more than glance at the notes."

She touched your shoulder. "I did not like his manners last night, thought there was something strange about him at the feast. The way he watched without...anyway. We did not talk much, he was not interested in talk. But there are ways for a woman to get the measure of a man. And I think I have his full measure." She made a bitter face and looked as if to spit, "Be careful of him, he is a greedy soul."

You take her by the chin and kiss the sour expression away. She came up on toes to answer your kiss. "Thank you Chihirizahd," you said, and she fell back to the flat of her feet with a bright red flush across her face.

"I thought you might be angry," she said, no small amount of shame in her voice.

"You might have saved my life," you replied, running a hand over her head covering.

"You have saved me in so many ways, my body is no longer important next to your life," she replied, clutching the front of her robes. "I would do whatever was needed, to keep you whole."

"I am lucky to have such a vigilant servant," you said, "But be careful you do not put yourself at needless risk over a hunch."

"Yes, master," she replied, leaning against your chest. When she broke she had a smile, and kissed you on the chin. "Let me be out of these things, and when you return I shall be your slave Chihirizahd once more." And she left you then to prepare for the hunt.

>>
You returned to find Count Hugh and his men mounted. Hugo waited with reins of your horse in hand, spear in the other.

You mount in a single motion and Hugo hands you your spear before taking his own horse.

"Let us be on our way," Count Hugh said.

And the party began out the castle gates and through the town.

Jaffa was a coastal port, of sand coloured brick and tight packed streets, but the main thoroughfair gave your party room enough to ride abreast. Townsfolk came to bid their lord a good day and happy hunting, a popular cheer going up for the Count.

His folk were Muslim and Christian in equal measure, but no Jews could you spy among their ranks.

Malik rode with his lordship, and Orlando kept with Sir Raymond. Lord Baldwin and Pons rode furthest behind.

When you were out of the town and you were heading south inland.

"We must be wary, lions are no easy game," Count Hugh said. The big lion mastiffs ran aside his horse, keen to get some hunting.

These lions had been plaguing a farming community in the south, a Muslim holding, and had started to take people as well as stock.

"A male pride, young bachelors bound together," Count Hugh explained.

"Where ever young bachelors travel in numbers, trouble follows," Pons said to the laughter of the older men.

"And where ever old men ride there is only the grumbling of days gone by and the creak of old bones," his son Raymond shot back.

Count Hugh designated a camp in the highlands. "We sound out hounds first to bring the lions to bay, and we close in for the kill in the afternoon," Count Hugh explained, "To tire the animals before an engagement is made."

Some hours yet before the hunting proper would begin. The squires and servants were erecting tents to keep the hot sun from scorching, and preparing some food. All seemed in good cheer.

You decide to keep your focus on the hunt. The lion you had killed had been a powerful beast despite being rib-showing and hungry. If these beasts were better fed and in number you might have more challenge. You remember what even a weak lion had managed to do to poor Sir Alain with a single swipe of its claw.

Orlando was drinking heavily with Sir Raymond, and your squire was going through some spear techniques with a man-at-arms, checking spear head and butt in passing blows. You took your own spear in hand, balanced the weight of it, gave some experimental thrusts.

You would ride only part the way and approach the lions on foot, the horses too troubled by lion smell to be reliable. It was expected the lions would kill some of the dogs, so they had set forth a large pack of ten mastiffs with kennel men in tow.

It was intended that after the hunt was done the lords would remain in the field for the night, and dinner was already being prepared by the servants. Fires made and pots on the boil.

Count Hugh was in conversation with Lord Baldwin of Ramla when the oliphant horn bleated out three beats.

"The hunt is begun, they are run to ground!" Sir Hugh cries, lifting himself into the saddle. A cheer goes up and you are soon mounted too.

WALL OF SPEARS
>>
You keep apace and are soon riding beside Count Hugh. He is laughing into the wind, high in the saddle with spear ready. Some others struggle to keep up, Sir Raymond and Orlando who are both drunk. But when you come to near the lions the horses are drawn up and you dismount. The squires keep the horses in hand while the men creep forward, spears ready.

You have a nervous each as you hear a deep throated yowl rip out. It was hard scrub land, with only some trees for shade and a knee high grass that gray'd under the sun. You wipe sweat from your forehead, and felt a jolt of nervous energy.

It seemed all men were gripped with it.

You crept in a ring up onto the ground the lions held.

Four beasts, large manned and powerful, stood at bay with large dogs rounding them. One of the dogs lay dead, opened at the neck, while the others growled and snapped.

The lions seemed as nervous as the hunters, heads flicking about to catch sight of their enemies.

Count Hugh steps forth with spear outstretched.

"Fortune is found in boldness," he said to you with a grin, and then gave a shout.

You match Count Hugh for thrust, when you close upon the head lion. It reared up and struck out, and near the length of the spear was enough to save you. Your tip strikes it through the ribs, and the weight of it suddenly falling is near enough to twist the spear from your hand, enough in fact to drop you to your knees with a loud surprised 'ha!'. Still you kept your spear in hand, and up to keep the lion from closing, as it retreated with powerful grace from the bloodied tip. Count Hugh had scored a cut to its shoulder, and it was retreating into the shadow of a tree.

"Keep your feet," Hugh chided, "You live and die on your feet." You kept steady pace together, and with the next thrust would have fallen at the lion's strike had Hugh not caught you by the shoulder. "Like the melee!" he laughed in your ear and you pressed forward together, spears sinking into the mane, plunging forward until a sudden gush of red dyed the ring of fur. It danced a little, its beard now red, before giving a last great yelp and collapsing dead, two spear shafts standing from its neck.

The other lions were still fighting, and you saw a struggle. Sir Orlando and Sir Raymond were both struggling with theirs, some men-at-arms trying to help them but Sir Raymond waving them off.

"This is noble sport!" he said with a drunken thunder.

His father Count Pons was not so consumed by bravado, and worked with his soldiers to bring their lion down.

Te very last lion was tangled with dogs, rolling and pawing at the hounds as they ripped at its haunches, and Lord Baldwin was laughing as he directed squires to attack it with flung darts and slings, some times striking the hunting dogs.

They might deny common help, but you are no commoner. You close in with spar tip at the lion's flank, and distrat it enough with scoured thrusts across its hind quarters that Raymond is able to make a good strike that puts the beast on three legs, its right foremost a bloody mess, and then finishing it with a barreling charge, bowling the beast over into a crumpled pile.

The bachelor lions each died in turn. Count Hugh moved up to put the baited creature Lord Baldwin had fought out of its misery, its coat so torn up by ripped mouthfuls as to be useless for display.

Hugh scowled at the sight of three dying dogs around the dead lion, and one of the squires nursed a slashed armed. But he did not admonish Lord Baldwin publicly.

"Aye, thanks," Raymond said, bashing you across the shoulder with spear shaft, grinning from ear to ear.

"We had it in hand," Orlando said however, striding past you to his horse.

The squires and men-at-arms collected the lion corpses carried them heaped upon a litter.

Hugo returned for you your horse. The sun had crossed the sky and was beginning its descent.

Count Hugh dictated one of the corpses should be taken to the nearest village and paraded for them to see, while the others would be skinned and fashioned into gifts.

You returned to your camp to find food prepared.

"Come by my camp later," Hugh said.

You see Orlando sitting with Lord Baldwin, sharing another cup of wine. He seemed sour with you for interfering. Raymond seemed ready to pass out under the sober eye of his father.

Lets talk with count Hugh
>>
You move toward Count Hugh's fire, but stop to see Orlando. "Come drink with us my friend," you said, tugging at his sleeve.

Seeing Count Hugh waiting he stands and bids Lord Baldwin a night. "What a day," Orlando said, dabbing at his shirt, "Would that I had put up a better show of it, eh?" He seemed a tad embarrassed, and offered you his wine skin. You took a small drink as you came to sit by Count Hugh's fire.

"Hail and be welcome," the Count said, motioning to the seats set. Malik reclined in one of them, drinking a cup of water.

You took a seat across from the pair, and Orlando took the one next to you but slipped and spilled on the ground, too drunk to keep his station.

"Alcohol," Malik said the word with a distaste, mouth ringing.

Hugh laughed and drank from a cup of wine, ate a slice of pork. "Muslims and their hang ups," he said, "What distractions must you have instead of fine drinking?"

Malik made a motion with his hand, the curves of breasts and hips. "Fine women," he said, to everyone's amusement.

The Hugh's attention turned to you. "Sir Wilhelm, you carry yourself well," he said, "I thought you might balk or be overeager at the hunt today, but you kept your head." He did not look at Orlando as he spoke, but his words were meant for him as well.

"My thanks," you replied.

In private, of course. Away from curious minds after the meal. Inquire first if he knows of any reason for Baldwin to act so, and what his views of him are. Meanwhile,

> compliment him on his own hunting
>>
"I was lucky to have so adept a partner," you say, giving a toast to the Count. He grins but shrugs.

"I have hunted lions since I was a boy," he said, "Like most things, experiece is the best teacher. Had all our hunters carried themselves like you mayhap we'd have more gifts to show for it." His eyes moved to Lord Baldwin at that, a hint of annoyance in his eye. They were four dogs short of the original ten, and Lord Baldwin had much to do with that.

"I had a question I'd hoped to ask you," he said, "If I may."

"Ask it," you could not rightly refuse.

"I think you might have call to visit the Queen while in Jerusalem, I would have you give her a letter," he said, "From me, and me alone."

And not, presumably, from the other members of your covenant. He had the letter in hand, sealed with red wax.

"I think you are a trust worthy sort, Wilhelm," he said, "Such men are rare in this land."

You could not refuse such a gesture, and pocketed the note.

"And you have cause not to trust your own men?" you asked.

Hugh grimaced but shrugged. "Perhaps, perhaps not," he said, "I trust my constable most of all my vassals, the others? They have their own wants and desires. Whether that means they will betray me I cannot say. But so far they have kept true."

The night was winding, and some song was struck at another fire. Men were retiring for the night. Orlando snoozed at the foot of his seat and Malik gave deep yawns.

You had spent much of the night speaking on casual matters. Count Hugh struggled for children with his older wife, who was Lord Gerard's widowed mother, and of his cousin King Roger of Sicily. They both shared a fondness for Muslim company it seemed, King Roger had made a companion of Muslim scribe Al'Idrisi.

When it comes to your family you speak only a little of your younger sisters. Neither were yet of a suitable marriageable age, though little Mathilde was coming up on twelve years.

Do we have any brothers beside Hugo?
>>
"I have heard a story," you said, "That the birds that fly between here and Jerusalem fly on strange winds."

"Oh?" Hugh sits forward, brow drawn low.

You nod. "Strange birds too, the exotic sort that can mimic speech and repeat what they are told."

"And why do these birds fly only 'tween here and Jerusalem?" he asked, stirring the fire with a stick.

You thought on how to phrase it. "The smell of dead dogs drives them," you ate some pork.

"Hmm, and how did you come to be so learned in the habits of birds?" he asked.

"Dogs in heat are rarely mindful of bitches," it was not an elegant metaphor for your slave, but you saw a flick across Hugh's face that assured you he understood.

"When you return from Jerusalem we should talk about dogs I think," he said, "I will need good loyal dogs to replace those I've lost."

Now what could he mean by that? You think you knew.

You retired for the night, Hugo having prepared your tent. He took a post beside your bed. It would be his birthday on the morrow.

You slept, and dreamed of brilliant blond lions ripped apart by short furred brown dogs.
-
The morning came and with it the packing up of the camp.

You mount up and cuff the boy. "Happy birthday little brother," you said, with a returned grin from him. The returning always seemed faster than the leaving, and it was not a long ride to return to Jaffa.

You came upon Solomon and Franz in the township itself, managing a tally, a small herd of horses between them.

"Spoils of our battle," Solomon said, "Though Malik and the Count have taken their share first." It was six good horses, saddled in all.

"I'll have a list for you waiting, for you to inspect" Franz said.

You rode past into the castle and were greeted by servants and soldiers, who took your horses and fetched refreshments. Hugh drank deep of his cup. The other sirs and lords were similarly occupied, some 'unburdening' themselves by the stable walls.

"I suppose you will be on the road shortly," Hugh said, "To catch Jerusalem before Easter's approach." He stretched out his back and shoulders, glad to be back in his own domain.

"Aye," you say, you would need to be at a constant pace to catch the right date. He took you by the wrist and grinned.

"I'd be remiss if I sent you off unaccompanied," he said, "I shall send a man and some troops with you."

Enough to not have our horsemen keep watch. Open enough to not be bothered by Solomon.

Officially we know of Judith, not Ioveta. Unless Malik commented a suspicion.
>>
"Perhaps Malik would be free?" you ask, but Hugh laughs.

"I'm afraid I need him here," he said, "But his daughter perhaps, and some of his men. No I had a mind for another."

He drums up a man, a fellow in maille to his knees and carrying shield and sword, a conical helm on his head, wearing Count Hugh's device on his surcoat. He had a long mustache that fell past his chin, and had eyes much like a scent hound, red rung and drooping.

"Tancred, you are to act as a bodyguard for Sir Wilhelm," he said.

"Yes sir," the man spoke in a Norman accent that was oddly high pitched.

"Tancred is a man-at-arms of mine, a good fighter and loyal," he said.

"Ten footmen with me, we march well," Tancred said, "We shan't slow you."

"My thanks," you say, accepting Tancred into your service.

When all was done you found Hugo and presented him with a maille shirt and helm.

"My thanks sir, my thanks," he said, bowing. You drew him up into a hug instead. Chihirizahd soon came with all your private things packed away, slinging it over the saddle of your horse.

You are preparing to depart though you've only just arrived.

You decide to check in on 'Judith' and her company, make sure they are prepared to travel.

They are part of the chapel household, their rooms humble. You find Theodore standing grim faced. He nodded to you, but his manner was troubling. You come into the antechamber to find Adelheid looking very gaunt for lack of sleep, her cudgel in hand.

"Ah, you return," she said it like she'd spit, her short cropped hair poking out from under her wimple.

"What's happened?" you asked.

She pulled a dagger from her belt. "Last night, we found this resting on her pillow," she said.

Hell. She opens the door for you and you find Ioveta red eyed and red nosed, snot stuck to her upper lip, crouched in the corner of her room. She had been crying, but her tears had dried up. When she saw you she rushed into your arms, grabbed you for dear life.

"They're going to kill me," she said, a bubble in her throat.

"They won't," you say.

"E-even in my cousin's home," she cried, "There is no where safe."

"I won't let anyone hurt you," you said, pulling her close.

She wiped her eyes and nose on the back of her hand, and looked up at you. Slowly she nodded, and gave back your hug burying her face against your chest.

When you emerged from the chamber you did so holding her hand. She pressed against your arm, rung out from a fearful night without sleep.

Adelheid near hissed to see how close the two of you were, but your hard eyed stare kept her back.

"She rides with me always," you said, "And keeps to my tent at night. Until we reach Jerusalem."

The old Armenian soldier nodded, and when Adelheid opened her mouth to protest he put a hand on her arm. "Save your complaints girl," he said with some roughness, "She has been safer in his care than she ever was in ours, and the more you back bite at his every word the more I have a mind to give you a spanking."

Adelheid closed her mouth and bowed her head, face burning bright. "Yes sir," she said to you with a curtsy.

With 'Judith' still by hand you return to the courtyard.

Sabeen is mounted with five lancers.

"Father bids me to travel with you," she said, "To ensure your safety." She gave Ioveta a frown but made no comment, spurring her horse forward with a small huff.

Solomon has come up with the horses. "We've enough for all to ride," he said, "And some spares."

Excellent news.

He handed you Franz's list:

- 4 rounceys
- 2 coursers
- 8 helms
- 4 maille shirts
- 7 spears
- 3 swords
- 60 pfennings worth of coins

It all seemed in good order.

"We must be off at once," you said, "No time to lose."

Solomon raised a brow at the girl's hand twinned with your own but just nodded.

"Who will scout ahead?" he asked.

"I want you to scout Solomon," you said. He nodded. "But be careful this time. I'm pretty sure we'll have trouble on the road. Threats have been made against my life."

"Who?" Solomon demanded, reaching for his hilt, eyes cast to the surrounding men.

"No one here," you say, "But be careful and be certain. There will be fighting on this road."

"Aye," he took your arm, squeezed it. No more words were needed but a parting nod. He climbed into the saddle, spurred his horse onward.

When you turned back to your crew you ordered everyone to be armoured for the journey. You would take no chances this last leg. Ioveta seemed surprised and Adelheid almost protested until Theodore raised a warning hand.
(cont.)
>>
They disappeared into the stables, Chihirizahd, Ioveta and Adelheid, to change at once with maille bundled in their arms and helms propped on their heads.

And when they retured Orlando and Hugo both laughed. It really did not fit the girls, on Ioveta the most she seemed a child in an over sized tunic, the hem near down to her ankles and her head almost disappearing into the helm. She struck it back on her head so she could see, and blushed red and glaring at Hugo as he snorted.

Adelheid had more of a height for it, but fussed at the shoulders, the metal link sleeves hanging very loosely around her skinny arms. It robbed her of any figure, making her a tall blond sprout with armour draping off her.

No one laughed at Chihirizahd, quite the opposite. She had it belted at her waist, and the links still poured along her curves, her hair spilling out from under the helm in black waves. It was a strange arousal with which they watched her mount.

"Ha!" Sabeen spat, "You act as if you haven't seen a woman in armour before."

"We have not," Orlando replied, "For a hellcat like you can't be called a woman!"

You mounted your courser, which had once belonged to Welf, and gave a hand to Ioveta. She mounted before you with an inelegant jangle, pressed against the saddle horn and your torso. Welf's remains were prepared and slung on the back of Orlando's horse, wrapped up and embalmed for preservation.

Count Hugh waves you farewell and Franz meets you at the gate, but before you are out of the town Sir Raymond has ridden up.

"I'm to Jerusalem as well," he said, "Mind sharing the road?"

Chihirizahd rides close to your left and Raymond whistles as she passes.

"You've a fine collection of women, sir," he said, eyes drifting to Adelheid and Sabeen both.

Tancred came up on foot, his men keeping a quick march as they formed a rear guard. Your pace was slowed a tad for the ten soldiers, but not as much as you'd feared. They were a disciplined double column, their pack horses well fed and hearty.

Sabeen's lancers kept the vanguard, flying out around her in a line.

It was as safe an advance as you could hope.

It would be a week before you reached Jerusalem, at least, and before then you knew a fight would be in the offing. It troubled you much, and kept you occupied that few could get much conversation out of you.

That night as tents were put up, and you kept good your promise to guard Ioveta even there, you found a new challenge.

'Judith' had begun to slip into your tent when a cough caught your attention.

"Am I to sleep outside like a dog?" Chihirizahd asked, fists on hips with a look of small indignation on her face. The two of you had shared a tent since you had bought her, and a horse as well. Now she had her own horse to ride, but still only your bed to go to at night.

"Of course not," you reply, "The tent can fit three, though it will be a very snug night."

Chihirizahd struck back her neck and placed fingers against her lips, an amused little smile on her face. "As you say master," she said, pulling off her helm. She untied the belt around her hips and you helped her draw the maille off, dumping it in a heap by the entrance.

She cursed in some foreign tongue, massaging her sore shoulders. The weight of it could be tiring to those unaccustomed to it. As she knelt and slipped into the tent she gave you a wink. You soon joined her.

"You will have to sleep without the armour," Chihirizahd said to 'Judith' who lay against the laid out saddle, still dressed in the maille.

The girl scowled. "I-it isn't safe," she said, clutching at the chains.

"I'll not have my hair pulled off and skin scraped through the night," Chihirizahd said, grabbing at the front of Ioveta's shirt.

"How dare-" she began, but Chihirizahd was having none of it, and was wrestling the girl to the ground easily.

"Master, I could use a hand," she said to you over her shoulder.

"It's best to get as good a rest as you're able, that mail won't allow for a sound sleep especially for those unaccustomed to it. Sharp senses are just as vital to ones defense as good armor."
>>
"Take off the armour, you'll thank me in the morning," you said, "No doubt your shoulders are already sore, they'll be hellfire by the time you wake."

Chihirizahd pouted. "You're no fun sometimes," she said, drawing off the girl and crossing her legs. Iovetta peeled off the armour, for a second lifting her dress up with it revealing her calves and a flash of her thighs.

She must have realised what was happening as she gave flustered 'D-don't look!" as she heaved the shirt off. When it caught 'round her neck Chihirizahd helped her pull it off the last off the way. She dropped it with a huff, face red and hair tangled.

"Ah my back," she groaned, flexing her shoulders, brushing fingers through her knotted up hair.

"Chihirizahd, if you would?" you ask. Chihirizahd nodded, slipped up behind Ioveta. She took the girl's shoulders in hand and pressed her dark fingers against her pale skin. Ioveta hissed at first but then smiled.

"That's nice," her eyes closed as her head bobbed to the rhythm of the slave's kneading, soon a slight sight coming from her lips.

"If I had oils and balms it could be nicer still," Chihirizahd said, moving to massage her neck. The smile that split Ioveta's face was pleasant, but you saw sweat crop up on Chihirizahd's face.

"Come here Chiri," you said, awkwardly clambering behind your slave.

"Master?" she asked as you took her shoulders in hand, your rough hands kneading her sore but soft skin. "Oh!" And she relaxed back a little into your lap, a pleasant cat-like smile across her face.

"This feels indecent," Iovetta said with a giggle. Then she frowned. "You have both been very kind to me."

Chihirizahd's massage turned into a hug around Iovetta's neck. "As I said girl, the world is not kind to beautiful women," she said, "So we must be kind to each other, yes?"

Iovetta blushed. "Yes, I suppose so," she fell back into the arms 'round her shoulder and nestled against Chihirizahd's thick black hair, a slight grin across her face.

You poke Chirizahd hard in the back, and not with your fingers. She just gives a laugh and slaps your knee.

"Rest, beautiful girl, and do not fear," Chihirizahd said, kissing Iovetta on the forehead, "We've a strong guardian watching over us." Iovetta nestled against Chihirizahd's navel, and your own arms encircled them both as you altogether drifted off to sleep.
-
You awoke and struck camp, feeling all the better for the night's rest. It had been pleasant sleeping in such a way, with both girls against one another, though you felt an anxiousness in your chest when you thought about the road ahead.

The days past by with 'Judith' in your lap on the road and nestled between you and Chihirizahd at night. If any thought it strange they made no comment, though you caught some jealous glances from Orlando and, of all people, Sabeen.

But it was on the next day when Solomon arrived.

"Oh there is a fight to be had," he said, his horse chomping at the bit, "I make out a force of thirty five, both foot and horse, waiting in ambush. Soldiers all, not the rabble we've been facing so far, and Turks to a man. Fifteen horses specific, and twenty footmen."

"Those are not good odds," Sabeen hissed.

"How would you proceed?" Tancred asked, before adding, "I'd put one Frank on foot against three Turks on foot, sir. They are a scrawny breed."

You thought on how best to proceed.

"A hammer and anvil strategy," you say, "With Tancred and his men approaching. When they are struck, the cavalry comes in around the flank and hits them hard."

"The problem is we have few footmen, and not much cavalry," Sabeen replied, "We do not have a numbers advantage."

"We can keep a shield wall, as the thief Harald did against William, but we cannot hold forever," Tancred said, "Again, like Harald and William."

"We could dismount some of our Franks, and have them with the men-at-arms," Solomon suggested, "Pad out our numbers with hard steel. In truth, I'd like a place on foot, so I can loose a few arrows." He grinned. "You've yet to see me with a bow, I am a child with sword and lance compared to my skill with a bow. Archers are Nubia's strength."

You bring up your men and lay out the plan. A line of shields and spears.

"What if they keep men in reserve?" Hugo asked, "Wouldn't our flankers in turn get flanked?"

"Fair point," Raymond said. "I'd say an approach as one, a protected column with horses for shielding would be the best. Push through and make best speed to Jerusalem."

"That's not the worst idea," Sabeen said, running a thumb under her bottom lip, "Though it has risks of its own. Not least that we lose cohesion, and be picked apart one by one."

Solomon shook his head. "Wilhelm is our captain, we should do as he said. Hammer and anvil is sound, and if they keep reserve we will just have to fight harder and beat their first rank before they can be deployed."

This earned a round of fierce 'ayes' from your oldest comrades.

Both we have a large group of normans with the Infantry to shield them but send two smaller groups of Cavalry to flank the sides thus applying pressure to the enemy forcing them to act.

the small groups of cavalry are really only there to menace the flanks not fight truely unless the battle is joined.

Solomon, Franz and Sabeen all have bows. That's it.
>>
>>35189629

Can the spears be thrown as javelins? We have 7 extra spears that our shield wall could use.
>>
"We go with my plan," you said, and all nodded, even Raymond.

Should it be that some should dismount and fight on foot with the men-at-arms? Certainly they were most outnumbered, though neither cavalry nor infantry had great numbers to draw on. Still, Solomon's talk of loosing arrows, however few, could of assistance, and he seemed determined to take the field on foot.

You think then the women would be safe back aways in camp, so long as the men-at-arms held.

You follow some advice, and put Solomon and Franz with the men-at-arms.

"Hang back a pace, and put a few shafts through their hides," you said to Franz.

"Aye sir," he said with a chuckle, "I'll feather the bastards." And hopped off his horse and strung his bow. You had seen Franz take a bird on the wing, you didn't doubt he'd fine a couple of marks at least.

Sabeen came up, lowering her chain veil, breathing out a long breath through thick lips.

"You are sure of this, Frank?" she asked. You nodded. "Well then I hope Allah smiles upon us this day." She drew up her veil again, only her eyes to see.

You bring together the cavalry into a double column, one of the Lancers with Sabeen at their head, and one with you in the lead.

The men-at-arms kept a single line, their shields locked and spears ready. Large at the top and thin at the bottom, they covered near all the body save the leg they marched forth with. Solomon seemed out of place in their number with his round shield. He had passed his spear to one of his fellows who held in his shield hand, and tested his bow string.

The men-at-arms march forth, and you see the dust of horses kick up. Ah, it would be the horsemen in first, and they had bows and javelins. You saw the Turkish foot up further, a double column advancing from the far field.

You saw their plan, to whittle your numbers with flying shots until the target was soft, and come in with footmen to clear the field.

"Wilhelm!" Solomon's voice carried acroos the field, "See that man?" he pointed with arrow to the Turk in the lead, who wore a feathered turban. And it was only by the tall peacock feathers that you could make him out at all. "Watch me kill that man!" He drew arrow to string and loosed. It arched high across the bright sky, swallowed for a second by the rays of the sun.

The feathered turban dropped from the horse and was lost in the dust.

"A fluke!" you shout back.

"Then watch his neighbour!" Solomon yelled.

An arrow to string and yet again a horseman dropped. A cheer went up from the men-at-arms. Franz loosed an arrow as well, though his skidded off the flank of a horse. Both men fired one after the other, ten shafts each, and Solomon had down three men and Franz one when the horse archers came into range, loosing their own arrows and flinging their own darts. Shields came up and caught the projectiles, clattering to the dirt or embedding in shields. Solomon made a show off it and snatched a dart from the air, returning it to its owner who fell with a squeal.

When the horses drew too close the men-at-arms struck out with their spears, but they were having no luck catching the distant rearing horsemen, and the Turkish foot were advancing. They kicked up a cloud as they circled the Frankish line, and the wall became a ring to answer, Tancred directing his men calmly, catching darts upon his shield.

"Sabeen," you offer.

"Takbir!" she roared, flourishing her spear.

Not to be outdone, you gave your own battlecry.

"Deus Vult!" and point your own men on, spurring your horse into action. The cry is taken up by your fellows as you fall on the Turks. God wills it! God wills it!

Your spear catches a young Turk under the eye, his broad flat face opened up with a bloody little hole, his body dropping across the saddle. Sabeen's horse locks with yours as together you kill Turks who, taken by surprise, drop bows for scimitars and are outreached by your spears.

"Takbir!" Sabeen screamed the word as she smashed her helm against a Turk who had closed in tight, the ridge of her helm shattering nose and brow, her hand reaching out to take him by the collar and pull him from his saddle. He fell beneath her horse and she was sure to trample him until he was still.

The Turkish horse tried to take flight, but your men were among them, killing at every thrust.

Through the cloud dust you see the Turkish foot has changed in to a run, charging your melee, hoping to save their comrades.

"Out, out!" you call to your men, who break from fighting and retreat a step, giving the men-at-arms room to reform their lines to meet the Turkish advance.

The crack of hard wood clubs and spears on shield was loud, but the struggle was not a wild din. It was the grunt of hard men and the stamp of boots, the occasional scream of pain as a man was dropped. A heaving mass of two competing sides, keeping a bridge of spear shafts between them as they clattered for advantage.

Your horse were sweeping around. The infantry should have quit the field when they saw their horsemen fall. You hit them on the flank, Sabeen beside you, Sir Raymond the other, and roll the twenty men up until they are spun out like pins and trying to run.

Only one man holds his ground. A handsome Turk with scimitar and shield, a horseman who had lost his horse, and dressed in noble garb. He cries in Latin, "Fight me Frank, fight me like a man!" and points to you.

You laugh, why would you do such a foolish thing? You bring your spear to bear.

He knocks it aside with the rim of his shield, and leaps at the lancer following in your wake. A cry from your man and he is gone over the side of his horse, neck broken.

The Turk spits in your direction as he takes the saddle.

"I am Asad al'Din Shirkuh, remember that name Frank!" and he heeled his stolen horse and was fleeing across the field. Such a horsemen as you had never seen before.

"Shirkuh!" Sabeen calls after him, her horse suddenly reared up before yours, her voice filled with a womanly yearning. She shouts something after him but his reply is swallowed by the diminishing distance that only grew.

"Shirkuh, you bastard," she said so soft only you caught her words, and there was no anger in that voice.
-
The battle is tallied and you have only lost three men. One lancer and two men-at-arms. Your men were all in good cheer, even as fellows morn their losses. Orlando has a bruised cheek and Hugo had a nose broken, but those were the worst of your personal injuries.

The plunder is gathered before you in a mound. Nine horses are caught, the rest either lost or dead, and five of your enemy managed to flee, including Shirkuh. Sabeen informs you that the corpse of the man with peacock feathers was a nobleman by name of Shams ibn Shams, most like the leader of this expedition, and his remains were worth money to his family.

- twenty five maille shirts
- thirty helms
- ten horsebows
- nine horses with saddles
- a hundred worth of coin
- noble corpse

We have a fractured arm and we are on the last leg of our journey to Jerusalem.

We also only duel when it can't be helped or when we are forced into it. We don't usually duel in advantageous situations when we can just run over the guy with our horse.

Solomon ofcourse
>>

Solomon obviously.

But also praise Tancred and Sabeen for handling of their men when we get the chance. Also Raymond since he's a prominent noble and was useful.

"Solomon," you dismount, pulling off your lion helm, and embrace your friend, "Such a shot as that I have never before seen." You hold up his hand as he laughs. "Solomon of Nubia does not boast, when he says a thing, he does it!"

"Solomon!" the men-at-arms beat spear against shield, "Nubia! Solomon!" Even the lancers cheered for him.

Then you pull Tancred forward, and grip him by the wrist. "You do not boast either, my friend."

Tancred smiled, a quirk of his mustache.

"It was your command that saw us through," he said, taking a knee. You pull him to his feet and push him back to his fellows, who take him, cheering their captain.

Sabeen dismounted.

"Aye, all this love for a skirmish," she said, unhooking her veil. Her face was drenched in sweat and cheeks red.

"We would have been lost without you as well," you said, grabbing her by the shoulder, pulling her into a back slapping hug. She broke back spluttering, pushing you off.

"You Franks, so grabby," she said, "Indecent." But then she laughed, and grabbed you back around the neck, kissing your cheek. "Bastards the lot of you!" The men give a whoop as she skips back and up into her saddle.

And soon they were calling your name. "Wilhelm!" And then something else. "The Lion! The Lion!"

The cheers carried you back onto your horse, and doubled when you fixed your helm back on.

"Gather your wits, lift your carriage men!" you say, "We ride for Jerusalem!"

We Wilhelm the Lion now. God today has been a good day.
>>
>>35190821

Have our pfennings been updated on the pastebin?

Can we have Chiri learn how to shoot a horsebow because why not? Or would it be too much for her?

Thoughts on our handling of the social situations/battle/try to run over that guy?
>>
>>35190821

Was there anything we did that was awful? Felt really good this run, even when we did something that might have screwed us over we rolled very well
>>
>>35190821
Thanks for running. So this seemed like a pretty dire situation compared to our past encounters, taking the best of 3 there saved our asses, was that due to good plan or are you not going with average of 3 for battles from now on?

Would Wilhelm have a bunch of holes poked in him if we dueled that guy?

Next thread when?

Please oh please run this thursday.

If you had fought Shirkuh you could have had a chance to capture him, making another potential high paying hostage. Of course he could have killed you, but he isn't a god of war in combat and you could have taken him with some luck.

It also would have improved your reputation among the Muslims if you had dueled him.

Teaching Chihirizahd war arts would probably be a wasted effort.

>>35190880
The best of three had partially to do with rolling above average for your plan, and having very good commanders with you on the field.

>>35190918
I'm actually tempted to run the next thread in a couple of hours, but probably shouldn't. Maybe Wednesday/Thursday if I can, but just bet on Sunday/Monday.

No.

As to what you could have done better: Orlando and Raymond didn't need help with the lion, they would have killed it eventually. You wounded his pride a little by intervening.

Wrestling Ioveta out of the armour would have been a bonus, not a negative. She's a fairly playful person and would have taken it in good humour.

Bit too early for heraldry to be common on any idiot with a sword, but very powerful land owners/royal families had it already iirc. I could be wrong though, the 12th century was very much a period of transition, where a lot of new customs were being picked up and a lot of old ones falling out of favour.
