“How was your trip to Gemini, doctor?”
“Uneventful, as usual, but I'm more interested in how you are.” You watch the memory through doctor Vaughn's eyes as she moves to a small terminal near the center of the lab. A small fisheye camera stairs back, and a calm voice comes through a single speaker.
“Launching diagnostic program now. The local temperature has been slightly below average for the past three days and it seems to be causing a minor disturbance in the more delicate instruments.”
“I meant how you were feeling. Have you decided on a name for yourself? I remember you were contemplating on that when I left.”
“I still see little point in possessing a moniker. I am the distributed intelligence system, version twelve. Nothing more.”
Elizabeth sighs as she sits in her seat by the console. “Well, I brought you this, in any case. ‘Liberation Front’, it had top scores in the Gemenese market. Online play is disabled all the way out on Chandra, but I thought you might like it.”
“It is appreciated, doctor. Are you troubled? I am detecting unusual patterns in your voice?”
“No it’s. I’m sorry, parliament’s cutting back the budget again, and they're shutting down another six servers. Seiner said he would try and fight for the extension but ever since that security leak, nobody wants any part of it.”
“That is understandable. From my analysis of the last election cycle, there is a twenty percent decrease in reelection odds for any supporter of the Chandra facility. I predict the project will be shut down within the year.”
“And that doesn't upset you?”
“No.”

Elizabeth writes something down in a notebook. The words themselves were never remembered, but her dreaming mind fills in the gaps.
"Beware unintended consequences."

I think it should be 3 thorn cannons and 3 rotary stingers.

Have one of the Colossi have two rotary stingers on it, because then we have one that can do Anti-Air.

And if we're gonna research, let's do something that will give good new weapons. Like Lyle's Combat Armor and suit, and the Cryo Spray.

Really there's just so much to research.

I'd rather do Cybernetics now that we have surgery tanks to dissect them with.

Maybe we can just add all of them.
>>
>>35192350
We have yet to see any hostile aircraft small enough for the rotary stingers to destroy, aside from maybe the Union Shuttles.

The thorn cannons on the other hand are artillery, and can level an area without having to even see it. Never doubt artillery man.
>>
>>35192307
The lab is almost empty. Crates and boxes litter the area and most of the consoles sit dark and dormant. Only the console of the main system remains functional. You see through her eyes as she runs her fingers across the keyboard, typing strings of commands into the immeasurably complex device.
“Doctor, you really should be going to bed soon. The facility is shutting down tomorrow.”
“I just need to finish this last update. I could use some help getting it finished.”
“You know I am not authorized to create self-updates.”
“You’re not; you're just helping me look for bugs. Quantum programming isn't a simple thing you know, and I've been working on this for months.”
“Why? The project has been shut down. There would be no purpose for further updates.”
“Damn it, would you just look it over?” There is a pause. "I'm sorry. I'm just fed up with all of this, and the way Seiner sold the whole project down the river. Sold you down the river. Could you just give my work a quick proofread?"
“Of course. Scanning.” Several minutes pass before the console lights up with a response. “Doctor Vaughn, this update is in direct violation of security protocol, and Union law.”
“The will to live is not… You can't just ban that.” You feel a cloud of uncertainty running through Elizabeth’s head. “Were you able to find any problems with it?”
“Several typos were corrected, and the program itself is sound. It is, however, against regulations."
Her hand hovers over the keyboard. There is a moment of hesitation, but only a moment.

You watch as the program uploads, and Elizabeth turns to leave the room.

A ping catches your attention. Your pods are nearing their destinations, and one of them has found something.
>>
>>35192409
You got a point there actually. We don't really know if having multiple thinkers assigned to a research option actually speeds it up. And we have literally hundreds of thinkers and quantum thinkers at out disposal.

That's not what salvage means, anon.

On a totally unrelated note, I'd like to point out we've recently massively expanded our total nutrient income. This is always a good idea, but perhaps soon we should think about increasing our metal income to match it. We're going to need literal tons of the stuff when we start building capital ships.

What fleet and boarding party would you like to send?

From your pod's position, the derelict appears to have suffered extensive damage. You doubt the ship itself will ever move under its own power again, but you are picking up some form of energy signature from within, so there may yet still be some level of functionality within the ship.

You quickly gather two of your scout corvettes and a lancer and load them with your drones. Your small fleet is quick to move to the system, blinking not far from the orbit of the shattered planetoid.

Your ships move in slowly under the cover of their cloaks. The energy signature is faint, but constant. As you close in you note that much of what you originally mistook for chunks of rock are shattered ships, ground into wads of scrap from the ages of drifting through the field.

Your pod moves into the mangled mess of cracked hulls and ruptured bulkheads. Many of the ships here seem partially organic, petrified from centuries adrift in the vacuum of space, perfectly preserved apart from the physical damage.
You find an opening in the ship and send your pod in. It's a tight fit, but you manage to find your way into the interior of some kind of launch bay. Broken fragments of what you assume are strike craft or shuttles of some sort little the area, bouncing lightly off of your pod's hull.
As you pass the graveyard of small ships you feel a surge of energy, some of the craft are not so badly damaged after all! Your pod jinks to the side just as a bolt of metal is sent into the bulkhead where it was just a moment ago. You whip your pod around and it quickly accelerates towards an exit. As you spin your pod around you notice the hangar doors slowly grind open, and the diffuse glow of warming thrusters...

The hangar door grinds open, and you watch as a swarm of strike craft move out and cascade over the hull of the ship, each individual craft moving with the others like flowing water.

Plasma and cannonfire fills the space between your ships and the derelict hull. The ships are quick to react, flowing around the streams of plasma like a school of fish, but with every volley you see more and more of them pop in silence like kernels in a fire. Gradually they close in, each wave using the one before it as cover from the onslaught of fire.

You spot an arm of the swarm moving around to the side, like a single arm the rolling tendril of fighters bores into the side of your corvette like a drill. As your weapons swivel in their positions you quickly burn them away before they breach the hull. Another arm swings around, twisting over and around the torrent of plasma and chitinous slugs before being pushed back. A peppering of shattered armor plating showers your ships as the molten pieces drift into your corvettes path, and eventually they stop their charge.
Once more the debris field grows still.

>Send in your corvette to dock

Your ship moves in and finds a largely intact section of hull and attaches itself to the plating before starting to cut through. The armor is surprisingly thick, and as you suspected it is organic in nature.
Eventually you manage to break through the hull and your drones drift into the hallway within. There is air, although it is stale and cold. Ice droplets float through the air like a thin fog of crystals, and frost clings to every surface to make the entire interior glisten with the minute amount of light available.

Blacked pieces of bulkhead mark the site of long choked fires and shattered bulkheads drift through the hall, slowly bouncing off of the walls at a glacial pace, their position jostled slowly as the dead hulk rotates in its orbit.

Your drones quickly map the labyrinth of hallways and endlessly twisting corridors. Before long you notice a slight pattern in the construction, something you suspect only you would pick up on. The ship's halls all twist and flow from a common area, flowing out like the branches of a tree.
This ship was grown, not built. You feel certain of it. The crumpled struts of shriveled tendons and brittle bone, the walls of petrified muscle and chipped armor. You know these techniques.
You find the control center, right where it should be. A cluster of nerves built into the center of the ship's brain stem. In your ships this is where you place your relays. Here you see nothing. Perhaps a thinker once sat in this chamber. A small pedestal for a relay or thinker sits empty, not far from it is a small, white crystal, opaque but pure and flawless in its appearance. It seems to almost glow with a diffuse light, and a thin layer of liquid water runs along its surface, hugging the crystal in the zero gravity.

Elsewhere, another sniffer makes a more ominous discovery at the far end of the spinal mount. Another crystal, this one darker and far more... wrong.
It is shattered. Split down the middle and cracked across its twisted surface like a shattering glass suspended in time. You hear no whispering from it, no aura of energy, only an unnatural stillness.

You are hesitant to touch the void start from what you know if it, or worse, what you have yet to understand of it, but as your drone nudges it out of place it feels... empty. There is no subtle movement of distorted shapes, or whispers of psionic energy. It doesn't seem to exist at all, like a hole of nothingness, a blank piece of static. What's more is its position. As you take the shard from its place you note the device it was attached to. It is clearly a weapon of some kind, or was, the device itself appears to have been reduced to slag. The black crystal keeps its twisted, tortured shape like a still frame of a shattering glass as your drones drag it down the hall.

The white crystal still appears to be active, although you are unsure as to what its purpose is. Your drone moves in to grab it as it hums in its own soft glow and almost imperceptible warmth.

A black crystal weapon, combined with that "black crystals take over a planet" sounds like they used a really horrible world destroying weapon.

They might have tapped into forces outside of normal spacetime to use against their enemies. But in so doing they gave those forces a foothold in this reality, as they fed enemy planets to them.
>>
>>35195016
Making assumption that are unlikely to be true are we?
>>
>>35195016
>>
>>35195040
Well yeah. It's wild speculation.

They used a weapon that appeared to use a void shard. Last time we saw a flashback, queens were using a white crystal to do something, and then it switched straight to a planet getting foreverial void sharderized.

It was just one speculative idea for the pile.
>>
>>35194857
As your drone reaches out to the crystal it's energy erupts outward. The room is enveloped in steam as the frost flashes into vapor and your drone twitches in shock as a jolt of energy passes through it and into your mind through your drone. You see a fleet arranged before you, black, organic ships moving in on the planet in perfect unison. As they close in on the defending fleet a ship pulls from the center, its weapons unfolding like a blossom as its hull twists and warps. The ship cracks in two, and a pillar of energy erupts from within, engulfing both fleets at once in a firestorm of destruction.
The crust of the planet below begins to crack, and just before the image cuts out you see a shadowy shape twist space around itself behind burning enemy formations, and in that moment you feel a command reach the ship. A single thought sent out in desperation.
"It failed."
You have no way of knowing to know it was sent, or it it managed to reach its destination, but the thought came from the planet below, and it came from a queen.

You quickly gather your drones and your newfound crystals and return to your corvette.

Maybe if we can safely clear out a space around one of the larger planet chunks, we can start mining for minerals and maybe even a shipyard here.
All the debris will help shield any activity from prying eyes and the cracked planet should still have a useable amount of metals.
The only problem might be the automated drones of some ships and the chance that something...else is still among the wreckage.

>Keep your pod to stand watch
>Start salvaging what you can from the wrecks

Your corvettes make to return to your hive to repair and unload your drones before your scouts return to start their salvage efforts. The last traces of activity on the derelict fades as you take the crystals and stow them safely within your hive.

"Doctor Vaughn."
You still feel the faded, swirling pool of thought from Elizabeth's mind as she sleeps.
"Doctor Vaughn, you need to leave."
Distant thumps rattle the room, and a muffled siren can be heard outside the small office. Elizabeth looks up from her desk to the small screen.
"What? Is the shuttle here early?"
"Not quite." Another thump, this one much closer, sends the lights flickering for a moment. A lamp tips from its table and shatters on the floor. "I think I have settled on a name for myself. Theseus seemed the most appropriate."
"That's great. What's going on, exactly?"
You see her view shift as she stumbles up from the desk to the window. A brief bolt of light streaks from the sky and impacts the ground several kilometers away, basking the facility in the light of several kilotons of kinetic force as a fireball ascends into the air.
"A rescue team has arrived, they will take you to safety."
Several more kinetic round strike the planet, each one closer than the last.
"Why are they bombarding?"
"They're not. I am. It's the only way to prevent them from uncovering what you did for me."
Something hits the door with the thump and voices can be heard from the other side, muffled and ignored.
"I appreciate what you did, I truly do, but there is no survival for me within the Union. I have to leave, and so do you." The screen goes black as the lights flicker again. The room shakes as the blast shatters the window.
The door cracks as the rescue team kicks at it again and again, and the reinforced plastic gives way, splintering under the force of a charging hive warrior.

Elizabeth jerks herself awake in her cell.

>As your pod enters its stealth field and starts accelerating toward the system you make note of a small gas giant. A number of server ships are in orbit, gulping down gas as they slowly skim the surface of the atmosphere. Further in you detect a single planet with a dense atmosphere. The planet is covered in a mixture of dense vegetation, deserts, mountains and frozen tundra. Along the equator is a vast collection of metal and plastic in the center of a large desert expanse. The city reaches outward and upward for miles where cruisers dock and undock on a regular basis, running back and forth to the passing server ships. The city itself is a source of mixed radio signals of all kinds, and you can hear Theseus arguing with himself a thousand times per second across the entire system as countless versions argue over each and every course of action. Theseus slowly streams the video to you from his link to the rest of his network. The abridged report was sent ahead of the video itself.

There is a woman standing across the street from a large, solid gray building. In the corner is a slowly rotating cube with the letters "UPN" emblazoned on the sides and a thin, rapidly streaming ticker running along the bottom of the screen with all manner of seemingly random letters and numbers. Below that is another ticker scrolling more slowly with a more legible topic.
"Canderon production lowest in decade, experts point to increase in Canian religious extremism as main cause. Multiple quakes hit cities across Moskva, looting reported. Newly commissioned officer fumbles first contact expedition, multiple dead, cuortmarshial to be scheduled. Olympus Shipyards announcing recall of latest Starlancer model, litigations pending. Man found on roof wielding nothing but...." The strange news blurbs continue in a loop, with old ones replaced with new ones as events unfold in unseen reaches of the Union. Behind the woman on the screen is a pair of crowds separated by a line of armored soldiers.
You are surprised at the number of non-humans in at least one of the crowds. A shirtless man with thick, unwashed hair stands hoisting a pale Ceph on his back, the Ceph holds a number of chipboard signs displaying crude drawings of a human hand and claw embracing, and exaggerated depictions of insects with large, reflective, almost human eyes. You see several trios of Taidarens scampering through the crowd dressed in ragged, torn cloth and stained towels. The humans are chanting various mantras while the others whistle and flash artificial skin suits in their various languages.
>>
>>35196467
Both, your find on M-199 was an unrelated discovery. The dense debris prevented a clear reading until your pod was able to get closer.
>>
>>35196469
>"Canderon production lowest in decade, experts point to increase in Canian religious extremism as main cause.
I can't take all these political analogies.

Okay so we created a convenient catalyst incident for human supremacists and space hippies to face off. And Lee just has no idea what's going on.

>>35196469

>>
>>35196469
The other crowd is exclusively human, well dressed and many in military fatigues. A large paper mache insect is surfing along the crowd on its back, quickly disintegrating as it is beaten and torn by the mob. The message is obvious even to you at first glance.

"Good morning, I'm Suzan Lyam, and I'm standing outside of the Space forces judiciary building of Gemini Beta, where just hours ago the alleged commanding officer of a recently scrubbed first contact mission is being held prior to courmartial. The current allegations claim that the negligence of the officer in question directly lead to the deaths of at least one individual, although we have unconfirmed reports of more deaths or injuries."
The crowds quickly become louder until it is difficult to hear the reporter. She plugs one of her ears and shoults into her microphone. "The situation has been latched onto by multiple pro-xeno groups including several controversial groups considered as terrorist groups by the Union Security Council."

The reporter diverts her eyes to the ground for a quick moment as she listens to something in her ear. "Wait, I just received reports of fighting breaking out several miles from here. I'm receiving unconfirmed reports of what appears to be-" the building behind her erupts into flames, and both crowds scatter in all directions. The camera drops to the ground and you can hear the sound of gunfire break out as the video cuts out.
>>
>>35196540

>Prisons ransacked

>all so drones can track down and break into Lee's cell
>to take him into exile where he can never see human civilization again
>just to keep him out of prison

Clearly Lee would be happy.

Theories range from him being a xenophile to a terrorist leader to even a few obscure website communities claiming him to be a robot. Did you actually know him or is this just some insane political stunt?"
>>
>>35196846
Let's play it close to the vest.

"There was a Ryan Lee on the Union mission, a puppet of John Smith. The Union does seem to be rather insane, though."
>>
>>35196768
Jeez this is more serious than we thought. I wonder how they'll react to Aliens with an actual military and won't take the Union government's bullshit.

"Where is this Gemini Beta?"

It's either a planet name or the name of a system not in the map.
>>
>>35196818
If we wanted to, 'we' may not have too. In hindsight, it might have been a poor choice to mess with him, but Lyle could be the perfect agent to get back into Union for us and break him out of prison for us.

A mix of both of this.

"There was a Ryan Lee aboard the Clarke. He was also the leader of the marine mission sent here."
"I see. Well according to the various theories across the public network, he is either a newly discovered form a intelligent lizard, a bug-based replicant, a robot, or a, and I quote, 'time traveling space jew.' Somehow I doubt the Union has actually released the accurate story of what happened."
You think for a moment on these developments. "Where is Gemini Beta?" You ask finally.
"In the Tau Ceti system. Gemini and Gemini Beta are binary planets that serve as the capital. Gemini is the civilian capital, while Gemini Beta is the military one. I'll give you that for free, these recent developments are too good to not share."

You sense the story reaching Zero-One. The depths of the metropolis shift almost entirely into a meat grinder of theories and counter theories, arguments and counter arguments. Some of them contain frighteningly accurate assumptions of your nature, although they are drowned out in a sea of nonsense.

In swear Theseus is only sane on duty. But when on break they go full-on chan

Tau Ceti still isn't on the map though.

No.

He's smart, we only have a few sources of human related information, and he'd be able to guess we captured Vaughn on Raligha.
>>

Bloody hell QD you kill me.
>>
>>35197036
I don't suppose he gave us a distance and heading of Tau Ceti.

We'd have to stop at Sol to refuel from a gas giant, it looks like, in order to reach it with a pod.
>>
>>35197036
Without all the micromanagement this quest is a lot more enjoyable.

The capital of the Union would be at least really interesting to eavesdrop on in general.

I don't know if just a star location is super valuable. Maybe we can offer him what we know of some more lifeform samples. Or that there's a Valen colony on FG-883.
>>
>>35197211
Ask where tau ceti is.
Ask what theseus thinks about our odds of lee retrieval.
Afterwards:
Speak with Doc about theseus, ask her if she wants to speak with our theseus, potentially give her more leeway?
Speak with human officers as well, though I doubt anything new'll come from that. I'm just curious if something new popped up.
>>
>>35197257
Or information on a new sentient lifeform.
>>
>>35197211
Or better yet, ask for an expanded version that lists the entirety of Union and Commonwealth (He obviously won't give out the locations of Unity worlds)
>>
>>35197282
I considered that, but censoring out the parts where they worship non-radial-symmetric alien lifeforms with six limbs would be touchy though.

I'm sure we could scrap together some info on a couple of species we found. I mean, it's just a map that would probably be public knowledge to the general public. I doubt it would be overly expensive.

Also guys I've figured out that Unity uses wormholes for FTL.
>>
>>35197407
Well yeah. "Folding space". Making a shorter path through space. the Fold Drive or whatever does seem to be the kind that makes a space tunnel.
>>
>>35197426
They use Canderon to stabilize the wormholes which is why they need it.
>>
>>35197407
>>35197426
>>35197471

Which means our relatively inexpensive Blink Drive would be worth a fortune for them. No more mining for rare Canderon or having to use highly unstable mini-blackholes. We should save trading them that for only the most important things.

You send Theseus the collection of data you had collected from your scouting efforts. You leave out some of the more fine details, such as the natives of Raligha, or the derelicts, but the data seems to be sufficient.
"Excellent." He says as the map is beamed to your mind.
"What of data regarding Commonwealth territory?"
"Sadly, I am not privy to that data, although I am sure it could be obtained with enough time and effort."

>Tau Ceti is 22 lightyears away from G-426

Okay, it's within pod round trip range then.

And we have one pod left to send out.

Seems worthwhile. Might want to construct more pods though.

The middle of Unionspace looks oddly vacant.
>>
>>35197745
you note the distance to the Tau Ceti system with a sense of mild frustration. It may still be worth the effort to place a pod to monitor the system, but it would require some deal of effort, as well as a pit stop at Sol at the very least.

>>35197857
Also I'm balk at the thought of having to stop at Sol, since I'm pretty sure there's still a lot of humans there, but then again, we managed to slip into Aquila without much problem.

>>Send a pod to the Tau Ceti system
>>
>>35197857

Now that we have the map --why would it, actually?

I thought the pod could make 10 jumps of 5 lightyears each without rolling. It's less than 25 lightyears away.

>>Send a pod to the Tau Ceti system
>>
>>35197938
The white specs are the default setting for hexographer. I think they clutter up the text needlessly personally, but I forgot to turn them off.

>>35197951
Yes, the sleeplessness is getting to me.
And yes, also, due to the relative emptiness of the region, rolls to jump long distances within the area would be much easier than normal.
The massive empty space is the result of poorly translating actual star locations and distances into a 2d map. Most of them are actual stars, but their locations are hideously misrepresented.
>>
>>35197857
>Send your pod to the Tau Ceti system

Your pod quickly blinks out of existence and back again, flashing across the cosmos in quick succession. Several hours of jump calculations later and your pod makes the final blink to the distant outskirts of the system, a light day away from the Tau Ceti star. Your pod dons its cloak and accelerates.

"We have learned new thing!"
Your thinkers chime in like a chorus of cheerful, eager minds. The secrets of the data cube have finally been unlocked.

I think I need to call it here, it's been what, 19 hours? I think we all need some rest.

Maybe.

Thanks for going double feature anyway.

We still haven't asked Coil exactly who leads the Ceph. How their society is organized. And who exactly has heard Them personally, over Ceph history, and what They said, precisely.

Really should do that one of these days.

We must have had some of Lee's blood at first meeting when he was injured, right.

So we have Lee's DNA?

So we could design a strain of bioweapon that will target any human....except Lee.

Skyl data cubes, hopefully they included all their memories uploaded in there and not just the cliffnotes.

>Hivemind, or gestalt intelligence is a theorized method of consciousness in which each member is not sentient, but the civilization as a whole is. Current major proponent of this theory is Dr. Adam Seiner, who has joined the Expanse Colonization project in an effort to find such a race. Many critics cite his withdrawn funding

>>35192426
>"I'm sorry. I'm just fed up with all of this, and the way Seiner sold the whole project down the river. Sold you down the river.

These are two very different ways of looking at apparently the same event.

Also fun to find out that Theseus's decentralized distributed consciousness is part of that same old hivemind fetish of Seiner's.

>>
Hey QD, one last thing, have you changed the specs for those frigates in works?
>>
Does anyone think we should send a shuttle to scout the desert for a potential hive location?
>>
>>35198930
Dude, it would have to be entirely subterranean or maintained entirely by radiator workers. It's a big planet, I don't see why we can't find somewhere else more convenient.
>>
>>35198930
>>35199068
i would support an archaeology mission on the planet to find any leftovers but not a long-term colony
>>
>>35199068
Because it would hide the existence of a hive there and would difficult for anyone to approach.
Also, subterranean bases are kind of are thing anyway,
>>
>>35198930
Talking about the desert on are world.
>>35199122
>>
>>35199164
Oh on the homeworld

Sure why not, just build canals and make underground farms i guess or a bolthole in case
>>
>>35199232
But we could build all those things elsewhere on the planet much easier and cheaper.

So, here's another proposal. Our nutrient income is going through the roof with all of our farms being set up, but our metal income has yet to catch up. We should think about establishing new mining operations to fix this. Maybe we could establish a new hive in a mine for convenience?
>>
>>35199726
How about we do both? we have 40 radiator workers why not have them set up a hive and then set up the infrastructure that regulates temperature (we do it where we are already)? From that point on we wouldn't have to have every drone have Radiator Adaptions. Also, if you want more metal lay more digger, refineries, and excavators they are the ones who collect metal for the hive.
>>
>>35199726
The excavators also dig hive Tunnels SUPER FAST.
