It's dark, and I can't see anything at all. I can feel the weight and heat of someone next to me as I slowly drift off to sleep.

When I usually dream; I find myself haunted by visions that I'm not sure are even my own. People, places, objects, all of them seem to originate from a memory of a distant past that I cannot even begin to remember.

I am-
I'm.
Itsukuma.. that's one of the names I have. What was the other one again?
I think it was...

"UP!" A loud, booming voice from right next to my ear bellows with a deafening seriousness.

"Ah?! What?"
"Empress, I said arise, Get up, now. Master doesn't like laziness among his ranks."
That's right, that was the only name that I think I ever known.

I am Empress, and I had a terrible day yesterday. Today isn't shaping up to be much better, it seems.
Yesterday was my first day in "the field", and I was shown how to do the job that will be expected of me. I'm really not sure what the purpose of the job is, but what I do know is that it's very scary.

Why does this have to be my job? I want to be a secretary or something, Master needs some of those, right?

I get up, letting my clothes gently form around me in a pitch-black aura. Concentrating on the feeling of hunger in my stomach, I slowly let the surrounding energy fill me. It should keep the hunger away for at least a little while.
Making sure that my clothes formed properly, I round the corner of the extremely compact barracks that I was put in. Several guards wait for me outside my door, as usual.

"Empress", I wish they wouldn't address me by name, "We trust that there won't be any more unscheduled attempts at leaving today."
Right, the other day I was sloppy about it. I should have known better.

I don't even bother responding to them, stepping past them and onto the endless mirrored surface of my world. My barracks behind me shimmers in the bright light and reflections of the other structures that seem to unnaturally jut out of the watery surface.
I wish I lived any place but here.

"Empress, glad that you've awoken."
I know that voice, snide and spiteful all the same. He's like an uncle who never really liked me.

"I have no time for this. I must fulfill my obligation." I push past the gargoyle-faced creature.
"And you won't cry when you do it this time, right Empress?"
How did he find out about that?! I really wish he would just leave me along instead of trying to second-guess me.

"Of course I will. I'm master's favorite after all. " Even if I try to project confidence, my voice continues to wane.
He laughs and disappears into thin air. I don't like how many of them only exist to insult and belittle me just because I'm not perfect. Just because I'm not like father, and I haven't let go of any guilty feelings that come from doing these things.

"Forget this, if they want it so badly, then nothing says that I have to do a good job at it!" I say to seemingly no one.
I need to get a blank card from my handler, but he already seems to be waiting for me.

The large, overbearing, man approaches. It's really amazing that someone like him works for Master. You would think that he would be the kind of man that would want to forge his own path in life.
Plus, as cruel as Master can be, this man has always had a soft spot for me. So much so, that he's given me the honor of calling him "Father".

"Hello, Father."
"Empress, you're awake on time. All by yourself, I presume?"
"Of course, Father."

He chuckles, taking a blank card out of his pocket and handing it to me.
"You're such a good girl, Empress. Maybe later we can go for something."
He stops and thinks about it for a minute.
"I don't know for what, because I can't taste anything, but we'll think of something."

Yeah, I'm such a good girl, and that's my problem. Everything would be so much easier for me if I wasn't.

I say my goodbyes and allow myself to slip out of the mirror world. The harsh pressure and intense temperature wash over my body as I'm suddenly exposed to the overbearing sunlight that exists in the real world.
I'm pretty far away from the school from where I just jumped in at. That means I have a lot of walking to do.

I keep forgetting how far away the school is. It feels like I've been walking half of the day before I even catch sight of it in the distance. If only there was a faster way to get around when I was over here.

"Hey."
What? Who said that?

"Masami! up here!"
Who?
I stop and turn toward the source of the noise. Slowly looking up, I'm met face-to-face with a girl sitting atop a street light. She has her blonde hair in a pair of pigtails, each bun on her head adorned with an ornate looking ribbon. Atop of her head is a tiny sailor hat.

"You look really different, is this really what you think about? Where is this place?" She says, with a giggle at the end of her sentence that really irritates me.

What kind of question is that?
"Excuse me, who are you?"

She shifts around, causing the street light to gently sway.
"Don't mind me! I'm just an observer. Just wanted to make sure you were okay here."

I look at her like she's crazy, she looks at me as if I have something to hide.
"So, What were you planning on doing?"

>"I don't know, but first I have to finish my mission."
>"I'm going to go do this stupid thing that Dad wants me to do then I might try running away again"

"I'm going to do this Mission that Master wants me to do, then I'm going to try running away again."

"You're going to try running away? Why are you doing this in the first place then?"
"I just have to, okay! Leave me alone!" I yell at her as I walk under her and toward the school.
"Wait!" She yells as I'm storming off, "Why is your hair black?"

My head turns toward a nearby window, and that's when I realize that my hair is indeed colored black. Which I do find kind of strange, I remember it being some kind of different color.

That's not important to me now, I quicken my pace toward the school in hopes that the crazy girl doesn't follow me.

--

I'm near the school now, several classes have already let out their classes. Which means now is a good time.
I take the blank card out, and examine it. I was thinking today, since no one was watching, I would try making the worst-quality card I could imagine. I'm not sure how to do that, especially with how I was taught to make these things, but I could just not pay attention to it.

I take the card, a drawing master gave me, and a small pen out. I don't really know how the drawing works, but if I'm sloppy with it, then I'm not sure it would even work at all.
Carefully looking at the drawing, I copy it onto the face of the card. It's not a great copy, but I'm not really giving it my all to begin with.
Then, carefully, I take the card and tip it into a mixture of ink that I brought with me. That's when the card starts to glow and take shape.

This is the part I hate the most. Slowly, the card starts to take shape as I gather the few things I brought and leap away into a nearby hedgerow.
Here comes the scariest part, as the card slowly transforms into a shadowy beast, my breath gets caught in my throat.
"Please don't let it see me" are the only comforting words that I can say to myself.

Slowly, it's eyes open, and it stands on foot. With a growl, it starts searching for prey.

I'm not sure if there is a higher deity, or that I would believe in one if I knew it existed.
But I can feel myself silently praying to it. The wicked beast continues to pace around in front of me instead of seeking out the courtyards of playing children and laughing teenagers.

Why won't it JUST GO AWAY? Why is it staying around? Yesterday, it ignored me completely.
The monster sniffs at the air and walks in another circle, edging closer to my hiding place.

That's when I realize something, since I summoned the monster, the wind has shifted.
It's currently downwind of me, and I'm sweating bullets as it sniffs the air and slowly tracks me down. Step by step, it gets closer and closer.
I'm sure the sweat that's soaked into my clothes isn't helping the 'staying stealthy' thing.

I slowly try backing out of the hedge I'm hiding in. Slowly, I back further and further out.
That's when it stops, and leans over to almost exactly where I'm hiding. It smells the bush I'm hiding in several times before letting out a sigh of intense warm air that pushes my hair back.

I'm going to die here, this is it.

No.. No.. I can't panic. This is what dad taught me, he taught me that I can never panic. Not when I'm faced with danger, not while I'm doing my mission.
All that matters in my life, the reason I exist, is for this mission. It's to serve the one who is my master.
...
If that's all that matters in my life, then why are my teeth chattering? Why are tears dripping down my cheek?
Why do I want to be anywhere but here right now?
"uu. uu." I desperately try to suppress my squeaks of despair. Even the faintest hints of sadness manage to escape my throat, piquing the interest of the monstrosity further.
If this is my mission, why am I so terrified?

I can't leave now, I can't go home and let everyone know that I failed. If I'm just still, as still as I can possibly be, then it will work out. I'm so close to having everything work out, it just needs to look at the children, and go toward them. Not me, it doesn't need to go toward me, it needs to go toward them.

My tears are only increasing in volume, especially when I realize that I'm hoping that the big monster attacks the gathering of school children. What kind of terrible monster does that make ME? I asked Dad what that meant yesterday when I started crying, and he only told me that it meant I wasn't his best daughter yet.
But this is what it means to be a good daughter, right? Not abandoning your mission?

It growls slightly as it continues to sniff. Slowly, the monster raises back up as it eyes the hedge suspiciously.
I can feel my lungs breathe a sigh of relief. Really, if he was any closer, I would have-

That's when he decides to slash a section of the bush right in front of me. The discarded leaves of the underbrush uselessly fall to the ground. The monster now has a very clean line of sight to me as it leans back in and starts sniffing my face.

"EEEEK!" Is a sound that, while I'm not entirely sure I made, was loud enough to deafen me and give the monster pause for thought.
Along with the hard punch that I just gave to the tip of his nose.

The monster reels back as I dive out the other side of the bush. He stomps straight through the hedgerow as I quickly jump to a nearby tree and climb as high up as I can in the few short seconds that I've given myself to live.

Looking down, I'm made aware that the monster hasn't given up yet. Instead, he paces around at the base of the tree. Occasionally he leans against the trunk and violently shakes the entire structure in an attempt to throw me off.
My hand hurts, my mission has failed, and my sweat has soaked all the way through my clothes. Can I cry now? Okay.

"aaaaaAAAUAUUGHHHH I JUST WANT TO GO HOME, PLEASE STOOOOP." I yell between rivers of tears, no one except some startled birds around to hear my pleas.

Something else has piqued the monster's attention. It turns and wanders off toward the school once more.
That's when I notice, there are three boys standing there. All of them appear to be much older than I am. The monster wastes no time lunging at them, as they waste no time attacking it with a flurry of impressive punches and whirlwinds.

"oh god oh god oh god oh god."
I really screwed up this time.

The boys are trouncing the monster, it's barely even a fight for them. The helpless beast is thrown back and forth between punches and kicks. I'm certain that this isn't the first time they've fought something like this before.
These must be the boys who thwarted the monster attack yesterday that Dad and I tried.

They must be really strong, I wonder if-

The inky-black beast yelps one more time as one of the boys puts his foot through it. It shatters into millions of tiny black shards.
In the center of that black explosion, is a tiny card. It gently starts to float in my direction.

Now is my chance!
"HEY! HELP!" I yell, the boys stop what they're doing and look in my direction.

I start slowly trying to climb down, careful to not slip and fall.
"I'M UP HERE!" I yell again as they begin to walk toward the sound of my voice.

My feet are on the ground by the time they come over.
"Hey! Who are you?" one of them says with anger in his voice.
"Oh relax, it's just some girl who-" the other starts to walk toward me.
"STOP!" The third one bellows.

>>
>>35248780
It's fine. Izumi is playing the long game. These boys won't be able to hit a crying girl, and if she cries super hard while walking away, they'll be more receptive when she tries it tomorrow.
>>
>>35248641
He examines me closely, before delivering a harsh judgment.
"Your disguise is really something to be admired, but it's not enough to work on me. Your masters should have told you about me if they expected that to work."

What?
"W-What do you mean? I need help! I've being held by-" I try to explain myself, but I'm interrupted.
"He-Hey, what are you talking about?" One of the boys says, trying to shake the shoulders of the older boy who is making the accusation. "She's clearly just a scared little girl."

"I'm saying- this girl here isn't scared or a little girl at all! She's a creature of the shadow, trying to catch us with our guard down!"

Oh no, I can feel the tears building up again.
"No! Wait! You don't understand! I'm-"

I'm interrupted by the feeling of the card pulling itself into my hand. Something tells me that the boy saw that happen.
"I'VE BEEN KIDNAPPED AND I NEED HELP!" I yell at them, hoping to get a word in edgewise.

The other two boys definitely look concerned, but the older boy isn't buying it.
"Your lies are as disgusting as your disguise. I'll let you go for today, but only if you leave and never return."
"BUT-!"

I don't get to finish, he puts his hands up at about face height for me. The tree next to me explodes into splinters as my face is pelted with bits and pieces of bark.
"LEAVE!"

I didn't need another warning. My legs have already started pumping as the school becomes a distant set-piece.
The feeling of air harshly pounding through my lungs is nearly overwhelming. My head becomes light from the intense pain of my muscles and heart as they struggle to keep up with my fright.

I hear a girl's voice next to me, she seems to be trying to keep me upright and conscious.
"Masami! Are you okay?! What was that back there!?"

My arm snaps up and shoves her away.
"I AM NOT MASAMI."
I slowly sit up, onto my knees.
"MY NAME IS EMPRESS. I DON'T KNOW WHO MASAMI IS, BUT STOP. STOP CALLING ME SOMEONE I'M NOT."

My body loses the will to continue as it slumps over. I can feel my face pressing against the cold concrete.
"..And.. And I'm not a good daughter.."

Something warm is embracing my body, trying to sit me back upright. I struggle against it as hard as I can until it finally manages to pull me back into a sitting position.

The blonde-haired girl wraps herself around me,
"Please... Please help me." Is all I can manage.
I'm able to right myself as I slowly stand up.

Suddenly, her attention is turned from me for just a moment.
"Masam- Empress." She catches herself. "What does that sign say?"
I turn and face the sign she's talking about. It's an official looking billboard with some text and numbering on it.
Except, she just asked me to do something that I can't do by myself.

"..I can't read." The defeat is dripping from my voice.
She looks back at me, completely confused.
"Huh?"
"I said I CAN'T READ."
The tears, they're flowing once more.
"I never went to school, I never learned how to read."
I don't need school anyway, right?

The text on the board is blurry, and completely unreadable. It's almost like the front of the sign is made up of alien symbols and runes.

The girl pays little attention, and tries something else;
"The numbers on the sign! What do those numbers say?"

I look up at the numbers, they're still nothing more to me but squiggles and shapes that I can't make heads or tails of.
"Try drawing the numbers at the end!"

I take out the picture Master gave me and turn it over. Trying to draw the numbers as best as I can. They're a little shaky, but the girl seems to read over them with a kind of confusion in her voice.
"That's.. 15 slash 2 slash 1991"

I'm sick of her stalling.
"That's not important, please, can you help me or not?!"
"Um. I'm just an observer, I can't-"
"WHY!?"
"Because this is just a dream! I can't change the way things happened in your memories."

That doesn't make any sense. No sense at all.
"If you're not going to help me, just say it!"

"It's not that I don't want to, it's that I can't! If I interfere, then it won't truly be your dream anymore!"
"JUST SAY YOU WON'T HELP ME!"

She looks really worried right now, she starts frantically searching around the area for something, anything.
"Look! Masami! There's a bus terminal! Maybe you should go get on a bus and just leave the city?"

>That's a good idea, try it.
>"But.. I don't.. I can't."
>Just go home to Dad, say mission was completed

"W- Leave town?"
"Yes! If you don't want to be here anymore, then just leave!"

This seems familiar, like I've tried this very same plan before.
Right, that's because I did. It didn't work out last time, and I have no reason to believe that it will work this time either.

"I don't... I can't..."
"Why!?" She's really irritated with me, now.
"Because.. They know when I leave town!"

She looks shocked, but quickly falls back into her fury.
"That's no reason to not try!"
"But I've tried before! They can tell when I leave this town! I'm only safe when I'm inside town."

That's when I feel it, that impending sense of dread. That feeling that I'm being watched.
Someone or something just crossed over into this world.

I look around the cityscape, and catch sight of a building that is half torn-up. Lots of floors are seemingly vacant, with some construction equipment parked nearby.
I grab the girl's hand, "Come on!", As I take off into a sprint toward the burned out building.

We approach the building, checking for anyone who might be following us.
The first thing I notice is that there's no one standing outside. There are no workers, no pedestrians, nobody in sight.
Perfect. I can get in without anyone noticing us.

I grab the blonde girl's arm and head inside. Quickly, we dart up to the second floor and hide inside one of the few completed rooms in the building.
That was a close one, too close to be exact.
"We're safe here. They can't seem to find me when I'm inside the city."

The blonde girl only stares at me in confusion.
"Masami, why are you doing this?"

That bothers me, that really, really bothers me.
"Listen! Stop. Calling. Me. Masami! I'm Empress! That's who I am. That's who I'm ever going to be!"

The blonde girl only stares in confusion.
"'Empress', was it? I think you're getting too much into this dream."
I'm feeling a mixture of insult and anger.
"Maybe this is a dream to you, but this is really happening to me!"

She doesn't know how to respond to that. Instead, she chooses to remain quiet.

Outside, I can spot some police officers walking along on the sidewalks.
This might be my chance. They can protect people, right? That's their job, I think.
They'll take me somewhere far away, without anyone ever finding where I went.

"Hey! Those are policemen, right?"
The blonde hair girl peers over the windowsill, right at the two officers patrolling on the sidewalk.

"Uh, I guess so?"
"THAT'S GREAT!" I yell with sudden anticipation.
"Uhh, Empress? What are you doing?"

"Police protect people, right? That's why they're police!"
"Well, um, I guess, but how are they going to-"

I don't even listen to the rest of what she has to say. I've already darted down the stairway and am almost outside by the time I'm finished.

"HELP! HELP!" I scream, visibly getting their attention.
This is it, I'm finally safe.

"Huh?" one of them responds, spinning around to meet my stare.
"Police! I need help, I'm-"

Wait, how do I tell them this? That I live in a mirror world where I make monsters against my will?
No, no, I'll just tell them a teeny white lie.
"-I've been kidnapped! I need-"

They interrupt, "Hello little girl, is your name Empress?"
"Um, Yes?"

Now I'm really confused. How would they know that?
"Oh, thank god." One of them says.

He says something completely unintelligible into his radio, before one of them grabs my shoulder.
"You know little girl, you shouldn't run away from home like that. Your father is worried sick about you. Whatever reason you had to run away, it's not worth your personal safety."

"Uh, Wait, Wait. Did you not hear what I just told you? I've been KIDNAPPED!"
They're both, laughing?

"Likely story, now come on, Let's go."
"W-w.. What?"

He grabs onto my arm, I struggle and wrench to free myself, but his grip is just far too powerful.
I... what have I done to deserve this? I'm going to be punished for sure this time. I don't even know what they do when they try running away twice. The first time it happened was painful enough for me.

"OKAY! I've seen enough!"
Huh?

On the sidewalk is that blonde girl again. She stands in the center of the sidewalk as the officers continue to walk straight for her. To those officers, they're acting as if she's not even standing there.
She approaches them, neither of them reacting to her. With a swift chop, she turns both of them into tiny splinters that blow away with the wind.

"W-WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" I yell, I don't even know what to make of someone destroying someone as if they were made out of thin glass.
"This has gone on long enough!" She yells, "I'm not letting you suffer anymore!"

She takes a deep breath, raising her right foot several inches above the ground. With a yell and stomp, her foot seems to crash straight through the ground.
Strangely, I feel myself being pulled into it. I'm trying to run away, but I'm being sucked in more and more. Until-

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUGGGHHHH"

Something grabs me and hugs me tightly from behind. I can feel that the sheets and bedding that I'm laying on are soaked with sweat.
Oh god, I don't quite remember why, but it seriously felt like I was going to die.

I roll over to look at Kaori, and again notice that she's only sleeping in a bra and panties. I wonder why she does that.

What worries me more, is the look on her face. She looks sincerely worried about something she may have saw.
"What?! What happened!?" I yell, delirious with exhaustion.

Why are her lips. Trembling?
"MASAMI, I HAD NO IDEA, I'M SO SORRY!" She tackles me into a hug.

What?
What happened? What is she sorry about?
"C-can you tell me what you had no idea about? Why are you sorry again?"

She only buries her face in my chest and cries.
Seriously, what is wrong with everyone? It's like everyone is a crybaby today except me.

Thanks for the thread everyone! Sorry that posting slowed down so much near the end.

I knew tonight's thread was going to be a wild ride. And I'm glad we finally went and did it. I hope this results in a much more interaction with Kaori in the future!

Thanks again, let me know what you thought of this thread.

When she heard the name Empress at one of the student council meetings? I think Masami mentioned it at some point or another.
