So D&D has a spell called Detect Secret Doors. But what qualifies something as a secret door? Does it have to do with the intention of the person who hid the door? Or is there an objective metaphysical quality of secretness which a door may possess?

For instance, if a door has been accidentally hidden through no conscious intention, does the spell detect it? Furthermore, if someone attempted to hide a door but did it so poorly that it is in plain sight anyway, does the spell detect it?
>>
>>35266720
If you have to roll to find ths door, then yoj detect it. It's one of those thinhs meant for gaming purposes that didn't need in world explanations.

I'm more baffled by what the heck happened in the last panel of that comic.
>>
>>35266790
I think he just pulled the book to exit.
>>
>>35266790
What about a stereotypical pull-book-on-shelf secret door that is so well hidden that no one could possibly find it without trying every book, i.e. there would be no roll to detect it?
>>
>>35266886
Wot?
>>
>>35266907
>If you have to roll to find ths door, then yoj detect it.

What if there is a secret door, but it is hidden in such a way that it couldn't be detected with a roll?
>>
>>35266920
Then you have a shitty DM, and larger problems than a hidden door.
>>
>>35266886
Is the door there, but not immediately apparent?

Then it's a fucking secret door.
>>
>>35266976
The point of the whole question is not what is happening out of character, but in character. This is a roleplaying game, so what is happening from an in character perspective is important. What does the character think and perceive that this spell does?
>>
>>35267017
I tend to call the spell Detect Doors (which have metaphysical significance in general). If they use detect Doors, they detect all doors, even hidden ones.
>>
Get this: the spell actually detects all kinds of doors, but the wizard who named it was concerned that its purpose wouldn't be immediately apparent.
>>
>>35267051
That seems to be the most elegant solution. What, though, is a door?
>>
Let's say there's this wizard, right? And he has a big room with 700 doors in it. He casts a spell which will choose one of the 700 doors at random and make it invisible.

Now, clearly he intended to hide A door, but it cannot be said that he hid intended to hide THAT door.

Given intent as the thing which imbues secret-ness, is the door secret?

> Wizard names spell detect doors

Doors have metaphysical significance. Any place that is an entryway to another place doesn't qualify as a door. Caves don't have doors. Doors are "made" things. Like I said, they have metaphysical significance beyond entrances. Doors can also keep things out. Doors can hide. Doors can protect. The list goes on.
>>
The magic pushes out, "feeling" the walls. All exits, doors, gaps, and windows are "felt," as well as a general layout of the room.

Any exits sensed that can not be seen, are "hidden."
>>
>>35267180
Say there's a room. The room connects to a hallway via a door and a window. A wizard wants to hide the entrance, so he bricks up the door and then hides the window, which is the sole means of entering the hallway.

That is, it is not technically a door, but it was hidden by someone who essentially considered it one.

Does Detect Door find it?

That window is not the entryway. The window can be shut. The window can hide. The window can protect. What was once the door is now the wall.

That window is now the doorway to the room.

now* the entryway.

The problem here is that your example is shitty. Checking books would most likely be part of a roll, or at least close enough.

Honestly, you should probably just think of it as Detect Doors but the players recognize that doors they can see aren't noteworthy things to report.

It's not perfect, because sometimes you'll have a fake door designed to trick people, but those are rare enough that I'd generally be fine letting someone who dropped a spell slot on detecting things figure out that "hey that's not a door it just looks like one."
>>
For gods sake people, just say the damn spell let's you know where all passages from the area are and what is covering them. Finding the hidden ones is the point, but the obvious ones should ping too. Spells shouldn't give a damn about your perceptions or semantics.
>>
>>35267598
>Spells shouldn't give a damn about your perceptions or semantics.
I'd argue that those are very important things for a spell to "give a damn about", given that your character's mind is the one casting it.

And what about cupboard doors?
>>
>>35267258
The bricked up door is still technically the door to the room, but the window is now the sole means of entry and can be considered hidden.

So when you cast the spell, your attention will be drawn to the window, to the wall, till the sweat drop out my balls.

ITT: OP doesn't know what doors are.
>>
>>35266720

It detects doors.

Which means that if there's a normal door nearby, the caster just disregards that shit, because

YEAH, THANKS, SPELL. I TOTALLY MISSED THAT ONE I WAS STANDING NEXT TO. IDIOT.

GOD.

And then when you're detecting a door you weren't aware of,

HOLY SHIT, THANKS, SPELL

SERIOUSLY

I DON'T WANT YOU TO THINK I'M MOCKING YOU, YOU REALLY SAVED ALL OF MY BACON FROM THE METAPHORICAL FIRE

THE BACON IS ALSO METAPHORICAL.

I actually forget things from my short-term memory whenever I pass through a doorway. It's really bizarre. May have something to do with my ADD.

>>
>>35268267
That's actually an actual thing that the human brain does due to categorization.
There's been significant testing, even with doorways that are just dropped in the middle of rooms (like arches).

One Alzheimer's diagnosis later, there might have been a door there at some point, who knows?
>>

After reading this thread I can tell you anon, apparently doors are kinda of a big deal.
>>
>>35266720
OK, OP, I'll help you out.

In Japanese style architecture, rooms are designed with modular walls in mind. These wall segments, or screens, are temporary in nature.

Because of that, Detect Secret Doors causes temporary blindness, and hairy palms, when used in range of Japanese-style architecture. That's why 3.5 fags hate weeaboos - Japan makes them go blind.

>>
>>35266720
Detect Secret Doors is a kind of mystical sense about what is around, and the secret door is detected because it detects the corridor or room behind the door.
>>
>>35266720
You just find doors. Non-secret doors you can already see. Everything else that pings the spell is a secret door.
>>
>>35266720
i am sadened by all the fagots who said this was a stupid thread
>>
>>35277659
wait never mind there was only 1 fagot in the thread
>>
>>35267124

Yes, the door is secret.

The act of concealing (intentional or otherwise) is what makes a door secret.

A door can be secret without conscious intent. For instance, if a door is overgrown with vines such that it is no longer immediately recognizable from the rest of the wall, I contend that such a door would qualify as "secret"

I would read that spell as "Detect Doors which have been Concealed.

I think that's just the bookshelf clicking back into place, with his hand in the exact same position as it was for the past three panels.

Learn the motherfucking difference between having a metaphysical significance and having a cause, dumbass.

Could you fail philosophy any harder?

Plato

Descartes
>I have in my mind the idea of a secret door. This idea must have come from somewhere, therefore the secret door exists.
Kant
>Hiding a door fails the categorical imperative. For if all doors were secret, we would be able to get into any rooms, and thus we reach a contradiction.
Nietzsche
>The secret door has adopted the slave morality of the wall. Also, Kant a shit.
Marx
>The essence of the door is the job it does, namely to permit entry. A secret door is removed from the means of production, and will eventually rise up in revolution.
tg's group
>Rolls 1
>"No, you don't find any secret doors"
>I roll again. There's probably something here, I just didn't roll good enough.
>>
>>35279414

But any space bounded on 4 sides IS a portal to somewhere, you just need the right sort of key /planeswalker

Find hidden door would basically just have to detect the magic around any such unopened portal and whammo, secret door detector.
>>
Guys.

Simple enough.

"Detect Secret Door" is just a short-range penetrating echolocation spell.

If you focus on the wall that has a fuckboat of wall behind it, then there is no door. But if it has air behind it, the feedback signal will be different.

On an unrelated note, there are espionage devices that allow to listen to the conversation in the room by pointing a laser at the window. The sound inside vibrates the glass, the vibrating glass vibrates the light wave, the receptor compares it against the normal return light wave, subtract one from the other and you can get the conversation out of it.
