Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

The days following your last eventful night go by without further incident. Somewhat. You distract yourself with the company of the others and enjoying pastimes, but the problem hasn't so much been fixed as simply changed. While not outright calling off your little experiment, you feel safe enough to go back to letting a good drink offer you nightly company. Now your nights are less coherent, consisting of still images and short bursts of memories. Maybe it's an improvement. Probably not.

A catcall causes you to turn, and in the hallway before you stands Melodi, a delighted grin plastered on her face.

“I had to be here to see this,” She said, then frowns. “But I’m a little disappointed.”

“Why’s that?” You ask.

“You actually look comfortable, mainly.”

Glancing down at yourself, you look over your suit and offer her a shrug. It took ages of standing in place and listening to Sergeant Alvarez rant and complain, but in the end you had yourself a respectable set of high class wear. Trimmed in gold with a Major’s pins on your collar, you’re actually fairly confident of pulling it off.

“It’s not like I’m being forced into this,” You say. “This is a social call.”

“Well, it might be for you. What about your partner?” Melodi asks, giving a pointed look over your shoulder.

Knowing exactly who she means, you reach behind you and rasp your knuckles against the door.

“I said I’ll be out in a minute!” Roxy calls from within.

“That was ten minutes ago,” You answer.

“Well, give me ten more!”

While not part of the original plan, Christina didn't feel safe leaving you alone. While she played arm candy for Delmar, she convinced Roxy to be your date for the night. Somehow. Sighing, you shake your head and raise your hands at the tech priest in a forlorn gesture.

“Make sure you record your performance, at least,” Melodi goes on, arching a brow. “You must really be something to get Delmar to vouch for you. Nervous?”

“Eh,” You shrug. “He said it’s going to be a private event. I’m not too worried.”

“Are you packing anyway?”

Without your asking, Sergeant Alvarez added a place inside your jacket for a small weapon to be concealed in case of emergency. At her words, you remember deciding to bring…

"Define packing," You answer.

"Can you kill someone with it?"

"I can do that without a weapon."

"Oh ho ho," She rolls her eyes. "Scary stuff, big guy. Truly."

"If you have to know, I've got my knife on me," You say, crossing your arms. "I don't like going anywhere without it."

"Good luck charm?"

"Luck? Yes. Good? Debatable."

At that Melodi walks closer, peering at you like a critic at an abstract painting, looking for an answer. Her mechadendrite reaches out to pull at your jacket, but you give it a playful smack. It retracts and the tech priest pouts at her lack of knowing.

"Did you WANT to come with us?" You ask, hoping to change her focus.

"Throne no," She scoffs. "I don't do social gatherings like that. Or any social gathering. Plus, I can never find a three-armed dress that fits."

"Why not get Sergeant Alvarez to make you one?" You ask.

"He's busy enough as it is," Melodi sighs. "No need to add to things asking for an expanded wardrobe."

"Think on it," You suggest. "It'd be interesting finding out if there's more bits to you than just a head and a pair of hands."

"Oh, trust me," She smiles. "I've got all my bits. The important ones, at least. Most of them, for sure."

"Remind me again how you're our doctor?"

"Now if I just came out and told you it wouldn't be any fun, now would it?"

"I... suppose," You answer hesitantly.

Before you can continue down that worrying line of conversation the door behind you opens, and you look to see Roxy standing in the doorway.

Having let it grow out, Roxy's hair is tied back in a ponytail. She pulls anxiously at an earring in the shape of a star-burst, with a simple golden necklace around her neck. Her dress is a modest, violet thing that matches her eyes; not showing too much but not being prudish either. You hold back a smirk at the effectiveness she seemed to have used with just a touch of makeup. All in all, a shocking but pleasant change of pace compared to the norm. Out of it all, though, the simple fact of seeing her in something other than military garb makes you pause.

"Well?" Roxy asks impatiently, looking between the two of you but mainly focusing on you. "Go on, then."

"...Wow," You say.

"What?" Roxy asks, suddenly worried.

"You're hair is... wow... and your dress is... wow," You continue, the awe clear in your voice. Beside you, Melodi snickers.

"Oh, shut up, you," Roxy scowls, slapping your arm.

"Really!" You smile, blocking her next attack. "I didn't take you for a looker, but here you are."

"So you thought I was ugly before?"

"Did I ever say such a lie?" You ask, looking to Melodi.

"Not from what I heard, and I hear everything," the tech priest shrugs. "I agree, though. You clean up nicely, Sergeant."

Flustered by the combined praise, Roxy's only response is to let out a frustrated huff and glare at the two of you. You and Melodi look at each other and smirk.

"Shall we?" You ask, taking a step forward and extending your arm.

"Might as well," Roxy says, refraining from accepting your offer.

"Have fun, you crazy kids! Try not to kill anyone!" Melodi calls as you depart, making Roxy cringe and you smile.

"So," You offer as you walk. "Wearing anything under that?"

"LT?" Roxy stops in her tracks, looking at you with a mixture of shock and horror.

"I've got my knife," You say, straight-faced. "What about you?"

It takes a few seconds before Roxy reacts. Said reaction is to slug you in the chest as hard as she can. You have trouble breathing; partly from the hit, partly from laughing too hard.

"Asshole!" Roxy says, though the remark loses most of it's edge as she fights back a grin.

"Sorry, sorry," You apologize, but you're glad to see she's lightening up. "This just doesn't happen often. Gotta make the most of it."

"For you, maybe."

"You've done something like this before?" You ask, curious as you continue on.

"Once or twice," Roxy shrugs. "I've yet to have things go badly, but... yeah. I've got a little something tucked away."

She raises a brow, challenging you to say something. Then you turn a corner to see the other half of your party, and you forget whatever it was you were going to say.

You're not quite sure if you're relieved or let down when you see Delmar. He looks no different than usual, his gold clothes shimmering with every movement. Now, though, he seems to have taken an exceedingly plumy hat of the same color as the rest of him. Next to him, though, is a different story.

Standing in a navy blue dress, hair done up in an odd but interesting fashion, is Christina. She has jewelry similar to Roxy, but their designs are more intricate and eye catching. While wearing a more revealing dress than Roxy, she shows no qualms with the fact; if anything, she is all too aware of it. You respectfully keep your eyes elsewhere.

"Lieutenant," Christina greets you, smiling. "You look rather handsome this evening."

"Are all Inquisitors and their agents this pretty, are are we just lucky?" You ask.

Delmar and Christina laugh, and even Roxy allows herself a smirk.

"I agree, we are all beautiful people," Delmar nods. "Some more than others, though."

"Yourself, I take it?" Christina asks.

"Only after you, of course," The Captain winks. "Now, let's be on our way."

With that, the four of you make your way to the hangar keeping Delmar's private transport. Once aboard, he explains the details of the night ahead for you.

"There will be other musicians, but I have made sure you are the center of attention," Delmar excitedly explains.

"Lovely," You say, biting back a groan.

"Don't be so upset, my friend. You need only play for the first half of the gala. After that, a replacement will take your place and allow you time to mingle with the guests."

"Sounds simple enough."

"Know, however... Lords Brice and McCoy will be in attendance, among others. Simply a forewarning."

"I understand," You nod. "Thanks for the heads up."

With that he gives you an encouraging slap on the shoulder.

"Do me proud, my friend. I have money on you."

Before you can question just what he means by that, the Captain takes his leave. Roxy gives you a curious look, but you can offer no answer. The rest of the trip goes smoothly, the transport setting down somewhere in the upper hive. You disembark behind Delmar and Christina with Roxy at your arm. She seems resigned to it, now more interested in what lay ahead than complaining.

"Damn," Roxy mutters, looking over the building in front of you. "This is private?"

"Apparently," You reply in similarly suspicious tone.

(Cont.)
>>
>>35287344

As it turns out, your suspicions are right. The building holding the gala is as massive as it is extravagant, with giant decorated marble pillars greeting you at the entrance once you made the climb up the steps. A small crowd of people are coming, going, or chatting in groups near the entrance. There, a handful of openly armed but relaxed guards seem to be verifying guests as they enter.

"Smiles, everyone," Christina suggests, though it's probably meant just for you and Roxy.

The Sergeant offers you a painfully fake smile, and you do the same to her. Then they both turn natural as you both start to snicker like a pair of juvies. The guards give you an odd look, but after a few quick words from the Captain and a dataslate scan your party is waved through.

As soon as you walk in your stomach sinks. At least two hundred people are moving about the main hall, with a stage with instruments and such in the back. Already, a handful of people are playing a number of instruments, filling the air with a soft melody. On either sides of the back are staircases leading up to a secondary level, where more people are enjoying themselves.

"Captain," You mutter. "You said this was going to be a SMALL event."

"It is," Delmar answers, looking confused. "There are only three traders here, including myself. Then there are local merchants, prestigious nobles, local celebrities, all their guards and entourages..."

You swallow with some difficulty.

"Great," You say.

"Enjoy yourselves," Christina says. "We'll do the same."

At that they part ways, leaving you and Roxy alone. You share a look of uncertainty, then morbid determination.

"Guess we should go see to the stage?" She suggests.

"I suppose so," You nod.

With that you begin to make your way through the crowd. You're careful to move along the outskirts, not disturbing anyone. It also lets you pause for a moment.

"What's wrong?" Roxy asks as you reach into your jacket. When she sees what you have, she frowns. "Seriously?"

"I feel like I'm gonna need it," You answer, taking a drink from your flask before stowing it away once more. That compartment you DID request from Alvarez.

"I'll be nearby," Roxy says, shaking her head. "Just give me a buzz if you need me."

At that you pause to inspect her ear, finding a discreet vox in place. You nod in approval before starting up the stage. There, the three person band stops to watch you approach.

"I take it you're our Piano Man?" One asks.

"I suppose so," You nod. "What's the plan?"

"We've been told to follow your lead," Another answers. "Or take over, should something happen."

They've got things covered, at least.

i just hope OP is going show kindness of a based level
>>
>>35287780

You decide to start with something upbeat to get things going. You ask the others if they know the tune and they say they do. Perfect.

Your hands hover over the keys...

And you begin to play. At first you're hesitant, the sheer amount of people causing your stomach to sink. However, you start playing and the rest of the band falls in tune with you. A handful of heads turn to see where this new music is coming from, and the number continues to rise as you continue to play.

At first you're worried they're upset about the break in atmosphere, but several smile and laugh alongside their friends and the worry vanishes. After a few moments the whole room seems to grow more welcoming. The oldest of the band members looks to you with a surprised but pleased smile on his face.

"About damn time we stopped playing like we're at a funeral," He says, and you and his friends share a laugh.

You continue for a time, changing songs but keeping the mood light and pleasant. Time seems to fly by and your fingers begin to cramp, so you break for a few minutes.

"I never caught your name, young man," The oldest of the bunch, a white haired but wrinkle free gentleman says.

"Alex Sandon," You reply. "And yours?"

"Joshua Gibbs, at your service," He gives a slight half-bow from his seat. "These are my companions, Virgil and Stella Anone."

"A pleasure," The woman smiles.

"Indeed," The man adds. "You play wonderfully, I must say. Where else have you played?"

"Oh... here and there," You shrug. "Never anything like this, though."

Noticing a flash of purple to your right, you turn to see Roxy leaned against the piano, head cocked to the side and smiling.

"Hope you know this has been recorded for the ages," She teases.

"You shouldn't have," You say, feigning nonchalance. "Really."

Her grin only widens.

"Is your pretty friend here going to join us, Alex?" Joshua asks.

"As a matter of fact, she's here to sing for us," You explain.

Of the four other people there, three of them find this idea wonderful. The last does not.

"One second," Roxy smiles at the others before grabbing you by the collar and pulling you across the piano seat and away from their direct earshot. The smile immediately vanishes. "What the hell are you doing?"

"Enjoying myself. How about you?"

"I don't sing!"

"Have you tried?"

"I took le-I said no!"

You give her what you think is a pout. After a moment her scowl lessens, though she still has a firm grip on your suit collar.

"What the hell would I even sing?" She asks.

>Your answer?

>Let her sing alone or make it a duet?

"I have an idea," You say, and quickly whisper it into her ear.

"I've not heard such a horrible idea in a long time," She deadpans, then smiles. "Scoot over."

Grinning, you oblige her and explain things to your fellow band members. While unsure at first, they finally decide to go along. Once more the music starts, and the crowd turns to listen once more. A brief set of fiddling with a stage mic and Roxy gives you a nod, though you can tell she's just a little scared. Even so, you finally start.

"Those fingers in my hair..." You sing.

"That sly, 'come hither' stare..." Roxy joins in, grinning despite herself.

"That strips my conscious bare..."

"It's witchcraft," You sing together.

The reaction is comical. Half the hall takes the tune and runs with it, finding a partner to dance with. The other half is shocked and speechless, and you take that as a good thing.

You look over at Roxy, and you can tell she's having the time of her life.

However, the song soon comes to an end and you take a breath, your own nerves slightly fried. You retrieve your flask and enjoy another sip, and offer Roxy a try.

"I'm good," She waves it away.

"I could tell," You say, stowing it.

"Huh?"

"The lessons."

"Oh, uh," She shifts in her seat. "Don't let that get around or I'll kill you. Alright?"

"Only if you keep that recording private."

"Deal."

Shaking hands, you continue on for a while longer, playing various tunes and singing a few more. Then a handful of similarly dressed people arrive and explain that they're there to take over. You and Roxy are almost disappointed but comply.

"A pleasure playing with you, Alex," Joshua says, extending a hand that you shake. You do so as well with Virgil and Stella. "And your voice was lovely, Miss Roxy."

"Thank you, sir," She replies, sounding oddly sincere. As they leave, she turns to you and raises a brow. "So, what now?"

>"Let's get some fresh air."
>"Find the Captain."
>"Care to dance?"
>>

Taking a step back, you bow and offer your hand.

"Care to dance, my lady?" You ask.

Not looking up, you hear her sigh and you're fairly certain she's shaking her head. Something flicks against the top of your head and you look up to see Roxy rolling her eyes.

"Only if you quit acting stupid," She says.

"Whatever do you mean?" You tilt your head.

Her eyes narrow and you refrain from further comment as a new song gets underway. It's also a slow tune, though none of the new musicians have decided to sing. A pity.

Finding space within the crowd, you wrap your hands around Roxy's waist like a true gentleman.

"Those hands slip and we're going to have a problem," She warns quietly.

"Yes, ma'am," You answer, the same as if it were Christina.

"And don't step on my toes."

You begin to dance, careful to do as told and avoid crushing anyone's toes. The last time you danced was... a good question, actually. You remember the basics, but not the last time it actually happened.

"Hey."

Roxy takes you from your musings, looking concerned.

"Something wrong?" She asks.

"No more than the usual," You shrug, continuing to sway to and fro. "Why?"

"You looked like you were thinking."

"I was."

"And?"

"And what?"

She squints.

"I was thinking about how I forgot," You sigh, and when she looks confused you continue. "I forgot the last time it was I actually danced."

"Oh," Roxy replies, looking embarrassed for some reason. Hesitantly, she rests her head on your shoulder. "Well, you're not half bad. If that helps."

"Yeah. It does."

The rest of the song goes by with neither of you saying anything, moving back and forth in simple but constant steps. It's a nice, relaxing time. However, it's too soon before it ends and you and Roxy release one another. She seems ready to remind you of something, then hesitates.

"Let's get some fresh air," You offer, and with a nod from Roxy you lead the way.

As it turns out, there are a number of hallways branching off around the main hall to help thin the crowds and offer an escape. Several of which offer exits to balcony's looking over the hive. After a bit of searching you find one that's empty. With the buzz of the crowd finally muffled, you feel the beginnings of a headache creeping along.

Leaning against the railing, Roxy slides up beside you in a similar fashion. You look at her, and she seems to be thinking something over. You wait patiently, playing it off normally.

"Can... can I ask you a question?" She finally speaks in a soft tone. "A personal question?"

"Shoot," You say.

You're lack of hesitation surprises you, but she recovers.

"You don't show it," She starts, avoiding your stare. "The wear and tear. Not usually."

"Yeah..." You answer slowly. You're not sure where this is heading.

"It's, at least partly, because you drink," She says. "Right?"

You don't say anything, instead waiting for her to go on.

"Like tonight. It helped you play better. So... what stops you from doing it all the time?" She finally looks up at you.

>"Running out tends to make me stop."

"Restraint," You say. "A drink here and there to steady your nerves is all well and fine, but being a drunk only gets people killed."

"Makes sense," Roxy nods, happy with your answer.

"Any other questions?" You ask.

"If I come up with more, you'll be the first to know."

"I'll keep an ear out, then."

"Well, I'm glad to see you're enjoying yourself, Mr. Sandon," a voice says from behind you, and you feel your skin crawl.

Turning, you see Sal Noriega step into the moonlight. He's smiling, but it's not a friendly one. It takes effort to not immediately reach for your weapon.

"That was a lovely performance you gave," He says, almost sounding like he means it. "Very touching. You'll have to forgive me, however, for having a question: how are you here, when you're being paid to be somewhere else?"

"Raw, unadulterated talent?" You offer jokingly, pushing off of the railing.

Noriega only stares.

"I'm not paid to be elsewhere," You continue, turning serious. "I'm paid to do a job. You gave no specifics, so I'm doing things my way. Ten people were paid for, and ten people are working on it."

The man's jaw clenches tightly for a brief moment at your bluntness, but passes as quickly as it came. His only initial reply is a slow nod.

"Acceptable, I suppose," He says. "Expect to hear from me again. And soon."

Before you can reply, he turns and leaves. Beside you, Roxy comes to your side and looks to you.

"So that's what we're dealing with," She says. "Creepers, and lazy ones at that."

"Not at all," You answer. "He's a civilian, but the man in charge is ex-guard. I... I think."

"You think?"

"Yeah, I think. But I KNOW we should probably track down the rest of our party before we find more trouble."

"Here, here," She stops you, however, before you start toward the entrance. "And... thanks again. For the advice."

"Any time," You smile. "Now come on. We might be missed."

The search is about as difficult as you'd expect. In an ocean of green, red, and other colored clothing solid gold stands out considerably. In a private corner of the hall sporting a number of booths, tables, and chairs sits Delmar and what you guess to be other Rogue Traders and their men. Not wanting to intrude, as well as spotting Gillian among the crowd, you check in on Christina.

The Inquisitor stands nearby, watching over the crowd with a bored curiosity. When she sees you, though, she smiles.

"There you are," She says. "I was getting..."

"Worried?" You offer.

"Curious," She replies, an amused glint in her eye. "I take it you two had fun?"

"We did," You nod, then falter. "Up until about five minutes ago. I ran into a mutual friend."

(Cont.)
>>
>>35291939

"I see," Christina nods, still smiling. "Well, I take it you handled things well enough."

"Always do, ma'am," You answer.
The Inquisitor goes to say something else, but a look of honest surprise passes her face for the briefest moment. Her mask is back on almost instantly, but you still look to see the cause for it.

"Amanda, my dear!" A well dressed man beams, arms outstretched as he approaches. You wager he's in his mid 30s, with a head full of neatly combed blonde hair with a beard to match. "Such a pleasure to see you here!"

You go to step between them, but a quick glance from her stops you. Instead, she only smiles as the man takes her hand in his and kisses it. You and Roxy look and one another, confused.

"I could say the same for you, Felix," She says. "It's been quite some time."

"Too long, I'd say," He nods. "How have you been? Has Delmar been treating you like he should?"

"The Captain is just fine, thank you," She chuckles.

At that Felix seems to take that moment to notice you and Roxy. Straightening, he clears his throat and smiles, blue eyes alight with something that makes you nervous.

"And who is this?" He asks, though it's obviously not directed at you.

"This is Major Alex Sandon. One of the Captain's best and most trusted men," She explains, and at that Felix's brow raises.

"Is that so?" He asks, extending a hand. "A pleasure, then, Major."

Hesitantly, you reach out and accept the handshake.

As soon as you take the man's hand the world seems to slow down. Cold water runs down your spine, and you feel new hands trying old tricks. You forget how to blink. You forget how to breath.

Then you get angry.

Your hand closes around the man's like a vice. With a surprised grunt from him the world snaps back to normal, but you still narrowly keep your balance as a wave of nausea washes over you.

With a look of surprise on Felix's face you close the distance between the two of you. He goes to move and you reach into your jacket. He freezes.

"Try that again, witch," He growl, quietly but coldly. "And I'll paint this fucking room with you."

With that you shove him off and wipe away the sweat suddenly clinging to your face. And the rest of you, for that matter. God Emperor Damned psykers and their mind tricks... you've had enough to last you a lifetime...

"Well," Felix straightens, and then smiles again. However, he turns his attention back to the Inquisitor. "Looks like you finally picked another good one."

"What?" You quickly put two and two together. "You... you're-"

"I am," 'Felix' nods, pleased. "Your boss and I are coworkers. Just... different branches. Doesn't mean we can't help one another, of course. Which is exactly why I'm here."

"I appreciate your offer, but we're doing just-" Christina begins.

"You lack a man, or woman, with my expertise," 'Felix' snorts. "Here I am, offering my assistance, and you turn me away?"

Christina glares at him, so in turn he looks to smile at you.

"I meant no lasting harm, Major," He explains. "I was simply trying to understand the situation quickly and without too much time wasted. I apologize."

You don't say a word, simply staring the man down. Of all the things you're willing to endure, psykers are nowhere on the list. Even if he's an Imperial.

"I see that perhaps I've gotten off on the wrong foot," 'Felix' chuckles, raising his hands in surrender. "I'll be staying here for a while longer. You know how to find me when tempers cool."

Bowing, the man takes his leave and wades into the crowd, vanishing. It's only afterwards that you stagger, nearly collapsing on the spot as you use the last of your willpower.

"Michael!" Roxy starts, catching you by the arm.

"I'm good, I'm good," You swallow. "Okay, maybe not."

"Sit him down, here," Christina orders, and with Roxy helps you to a booth. Once you manage to sit down the room stops spinning, and though you feel like you've drenched your suit in sweat, you're feeling slightly better.

"You're SURE you're alright?" Christina asks once more.

"I am. Really, ma'am," You tell her. "But who the fuck WAS that guy?"

"That..." Christina sighs. "That was Inquisitor Alexi Straunum, of the Ordos Hereticus."
