Part 11

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Hugo of Koblenz, and after donning a priestly disguise to infiltrate the palace, you have just met with the Queen of Jerusalem about your imprisoned brother. Gaining her assurance that he would not be abandoned to an awful fate and delivering clandestine letters to her, you do not stay long in the palace and are soon ushered out by nun and royal tutor Adelheid. You are back on the bustling streets of Jerusalem, and from there back to the cloistered walls of St Anne's Church.

You've a month to wait until your brother is brought to trial, and in the mean time Jerusalem would be your home. Your friends are still scattered through out the city and camped outside the city gates, and as far as you are aware the king's men may still be hunting you.

You decide to scout the city for one of your companions, hoping to find your oldest friend Franz. With your head still shaved into a tonsure you keep on your monk garb. It seems to earn you a little deference on the street, but not much. Labourers and craftsmen retiring for the day, either heading home or out to drink, shoved past you with little regard. Jerusalem was so lousy with the faithful, both lay and clergy, that one little monk made little stir.

You saw loud preachers try to cry on street corners only to be shouted down by the tired and home bound, who didn't care to hear the high pitched cries of doomsayers after a hard days work and the inviting call of the bed.

For all that this was the Holy City, it shocked you to see how casual the common folk were in treating the faithful.

You shoulder into a common house, off the Street of St Stephen. It's a rowdy place, and a pair of Nubians were playing their flute and drum for the enjoyment of the crowd. They earned little attention as most were concerned with the two wrestlers in the saw dust strewn middle of the common house, grappling for purchase on arm and bare shoulder.

You knew neither of the men, but gasped as one slipped a hold and delivered a jaw crunching uppercut to his opponent, turning and throwing him over his hip. Much to the delight of the crowd.

A boy close to your own age served drinks to a small group of soldiers, one you faintly recognised. And he faintly recognised you. A cleft lip and spot covered face, you'd broken his nose just the other day in your flight.
>>
"Ey!" he said, swaggering to his feet. His feet swayed from drink. He was tugging at his sword and failing to draw it. "Ey, that's the boy!" he pushed one of his fellows, who turned drunk eyes your way as well. Three soldiers rose and began to approach you.

You froze, your sword trapped under your heavy monk robes. But before you had need to draw it a long faced soldier slipped out of the crowd and grabbed you by the arm.

"Do we stay and fight, or run?" Tancred asked.

You return Tancred's grab at his own forearm and pull him away. "I've got a safe house," you said, "Follow me, step quickly."

You duck out of the tavern while the drunk soldiers stagger after you, Tancred in tow. The tall Norman soldier had a long stride, and kept pace with you easily, barely more than a casual walk even though you moved at double time.

"Not so fast lad," he cautioned as you rounded a corner to St Anne's. Eyes were on the young monk and your tall soldier companion. You cracked the door to St Anne's and ushered Tancred in.

"I thought the worst had happened," he said, walking over and taking a seat at a pew, "And was planning to head back to Jaffa soon as I could."

The worst almost did. You noted Tancred was not a man given to smiling much, and he studied the church with a sober eye. When the mother superior of the Church appeared she clucked her tongue.

"Another stray to put up," she said, and made the cross, "But we serve at the Queen's word." And she retreated, readying another room for your companion.

Tancred spread his arms on the back of the pew, blowing out his mustaches with a weariness that spoke of little sleep.

>>
"How did you escape?" you asked. Tancred was no small man to hide himself away in a nook or cranny, but he didn't look beaten up as Solomon had. He turned red rimmed eyes to you and shrugged.

"I was taking a piss when they came," he said, "One tried to grab me but I split him 'cross the face with my sword and ran. Have been running since, looking for my boys. Hid in a Frankish house for a night with a kind old woman and left a couple of my boys there to help her in turn ." His head was dropping even while he talked. You guessed the night had not been restful.

Etain slipped out the side room singing a song in her native language, a shim-shawing cant you didn't understand. "If it please ye to follow me," she said to the rangy soldier. He nodded and accepted the help of an arm to guide him.

"We'll send for your men on the morrow," you said as he disappeared down the corridor.

You looked up at the cross and felt uncertain about how to proceed.

You kneel before the cross and pray. "In Nomine Patris..." you begin, and recite out the Lord's Prayer. Not once or twice but ten times over, 'til your knees burned and your mouth was dry. A young nun watched from the far corner. You hadn't met her before, and when you rose from your vigil she gave you a respectful bow of her head as you made your way to your chamber. You couldn't guess what the hour was, but you thought it close to midnight.

A bed had been prepared for you, a jug of wine and dinner left. You ate quickly and drank a little before pulling off your robes and pulling yourself under the blankets, finding sleep soon.

You dreamed a little. Of the Last Judgement, of the earth opened up and the dead returned to the world of the living. Of men and women with thick black pustules breaking across their faces and awful moans wordless from their broken lips. You tossed and fretted even as Christ appeared with sword in hand, to divide the wicked and the just.

And you awoke in a sweat, wondering which you were. But more you wondered which your brother was, and hoped his time was still far off so he might find salvation from his sins.

You drew on your clothes and staggered from your room, rubbing the bald spot on your head. It was a strange feeling, the bristly little spot, and it had made the girls you passed giggle.

You think it wise to check on your friends outside the wall. They would know little of what was happening, and if they had heard anything at all might be given to panic.

Before you slip away you check to see how Solomon was doing. You found him sitting up in his bed, reading a book. Adelheid was checking his bandages in a way more familiar than the usual surgeon, draped across his lap and peeling them back with a wide smile and soothing fingers, so you beat a hasty retreat before they do more than glance up at you.

Your blushing furiously when you stumble across Tancred, who was stripped to his waist and doing push ups in his room. Maggie was watching and giggling while Etain sat on his back, an added weight, calling out each press he made between giggling of her own. The soldier seemed unconcerned by the girls, and focused mostly on his exercise.

You back out of his room with little conversation as well, and pull up your hood before leaving the church.

You check the markets this time for signs of Franz or Sir Raymond but find neither. You do spot a pair of Tancred's soldiers, gambling in the corner. You approach them and inform them of their captain's whereabouts and they thank you, careful not to salute.

As you begin to make your way back to St Anne's you curse. Your day had offered little sign of your other companions. As the sun began to sink you heard footsteps behind you. You'd wandered into the Syrian quarters of the city, and there were few about. The footsteps were heavy, booted feet.

"You!" a rough voice called. You glance over your shoulder. The split lipped thug again, this time alone.

You decide this isn't the time or place for a fight. You hitch up your robes and start to run. The soldier gives a frustrated bark and sets off after you. Before you've made it to the edge of the street he is breathing down your neck and snatching at your hood.

"You little blond rat," he snarled with hot spittle flying from his broken mouth.

You duck around a corner and thud against a post with an audible smack. The soldier takes a step and is standing over you, grinning.

"Ey, what's this?" a man said, gesturing with scissors. He had a chair set up and a girl sitting in it, with a towel thrown 'round her shoulders. A man and woman, the girl's parents, waited patiently.

"King's business," the soldier snapped, hand on the hilt of his sword, "Mind your own business barber." The barber raised his hands and stepped away.

The Syrian Quarter is the area of Jerusalem that was given to the local Christians to live in, mostly Orthodox or other Eastern Church followers. It mostly conforms to the neighbourhoods that had housed Christians during the Muslim years of rule.

You get up and start to run but your robes and your spinning head cause you to collide with the chair, bowling it and the girl in it over. She falls with a startled cry and you land on top of her, your face buried in her chest. Before the soldier can grab you, you stumble to your feet, pushing yourself off the girl with a hand indelicately placed, and set off.

The girl gives a high startled cry as you launch yourself away. You catch a glance of her blush but are too busy running to do more but shout back a short 'Sorry!'.

The soldier has to climb over stray chair and girl with a barber screaming in his ear, giving you a decent head start, but its not great and he pounds after you, dogging you around the corner, then the next.

It's only at night fall and with a burning through your legs and loins that you stumble into St Anne's, having given the soldier the slip.

You collapse against a pew, puffing out a hard breath. You'd have to avoid the street for a couple of days or you were sure to be spotted again.

The next day you find Tancred sitting in the small courtyard, sharpening his sword. Birds sing in the small tree overhead, and he whistles along with the birds. You'd had little cause to speak much with Tancred, all you really knew was that he was a soldier of Jaffa sworn to Count Hugh.

And he was no coward.

"Squire," he said around a chewed stalk of fennel, lowering his whetstone. He was a tall, lean man, with dark brown hair that fell in a Frankish styled fringe across his forehead and an angular, almost horse-like face.

"Tancred," you replied.

He also wasn't much for words and just checked his sword in its scabbard and turned his attention to his maille, working it over with a cloth, checking the links. You did as much every morning as well, and every evening besides, for you and your brother.

He was a good fighter, by your reckoning. Good enough.

"Would you care for a bout?" you said, gesturing to your sword. He grunted, stood up. You'd made it a point to spar with many different people. Solomon had taught you some of the spear fighting techniques of his people and Sabeen had drilled you on local knife fighting. Your brother had taught you some swordplay and Franz some wrestling. It had been a while since you had crossed swords with anyone.

Tancred drew his sword.

"We fight at half-step," he said, "Be careful squire, or you might run yourself up my blade."

You drew your own sword and held it out before you. Without shield or buckler it was not the sort of fencing you were used to. You'd be sure to check your measure and not move to quickly. These blades were live, and anything could happen if senses were abandoned.

You gain the first advantage, positioning your blade to cut across his throat when he draws for a thrust, and when he takes a next careful step, move to change your cut into a thrust, but find his sword has knocked it aside. You step around each other, more like a careful dance than a full speed fight, and you find you match each other well, but Tancred has the clear advantage in size and experience. No actual blows were struck in the fight of course, lest one of you be killed.

You struggle to match each step of his, his sword seeming to always have the inch on yours, his step longer, but you manage to place your blade enough that it's no clear loss either, even if your form was not entirely fluid at times.

By your final exchange though you manage to place the point of your sword on his knee, an overstep on Tancred's part.

A small group of nuns had come to watch your match, among them the two novices of distant Ireland, Maggie and Etain.

"What think you gentle women?" Tancred asked, lowering his blade.

"Oh I think you're both a fine pair," Maggie said, "But I know little of swords."

"Hugo had the last touch," Etain said.

"Yes, but the soldier had his measure the rest of the time," a small dark girl said.

"A rematch!" they all decided, "Rematch." And it was soon joined with 'Shirtless!" So they could judge it clearly, of course.

You doff your shirt to the whistle of the girls and Tancred did the same.

"My wife must never hear of this," he said, waggling his sword at you but grinning from ear to ear anyway. He was a flat bellied, flat chested man of lean corded muscle, with a long scar down the shoulder and along the ribs, very faded. You couldn't say what kind of weapon had made that wound, but he saw you looking.

"A Turk scimitar," he said, "Always keep your shield ready. They move quick."

The nuns divided into cheering sections. One side for you, the other for Tancred. You counted more in his number, but saw Maggie and Etain leading your side.

"You can do it Hugo!" Etain clapped, and Maggie had her around the shoulder, biting her lip with excitement.

You tried hard not to blush.

At first it looks like you might have the advantage, you keep him at point and when you closes you match him step for step, but then things start shifting and soon you are retreating from his advance. His long arms outreach you and you can't slip past his guard. Your frustration mounts, and soon you are trying to beat him to the thrust, building your speed past the half-measure. But no trick is working, he knocks your blade aside and mock-strikes you each time. Finally you give a tight roar of frustration and strike up from the hip.

He catches you on the blade and steps into a blade, grabbing your sword by the hilt and knocking you down with shoulder and hip, disarming you. You sprawl to the dirt swearing.

"I said step careful boy," he said, furrowing his brow. He took both swords in one hand and offered you the other. When he had you on your feet he had the nuns gushing over him.

"So skillful!" Etain said, wiping his chest with a cloth to soak up the sweat.

"And chivalrous," Maggie said, doing the same to his back.

Tancred slapped you on the shoulder and offered you your sword. You took it with a nod. The man enjoyed the attention and touch of the girls, that was obvious, but he was shaking them off as well, drawing back on his shirt.

He draws you to dinner and you talk a little on tactics and shared battle experience, no hard feelings passed between you. Though you felt an irk that the girls mooned mostly for him now, and seemed no longer as concerned with you.

You last day of self exile past and you learned a little about the soldier. He had a wife and four children, two girls and two boys, and they tended a copse of date palms for Count Hugh as well as keeping some pigs and chickens. His main occupation was warfare however, and he had fought in near every campaign since he was an age to do so, under King Baldwin and King Fulk in turn.

You finally feel confident to leave the Church without being recognised.

That means if Sabeen and Hugo wish to tie the knot, either one must convert.

I'm under the impression that Muslim men can marry Christian women without requiring that they convert, but not the other way around, because the man of the household is the de facto religious leader for that family unit, and a Muslim woman must have a Muslim man to guide her in the faith.

You decide it best to find your friends outside the wall and tell them just what had happened, if they had not heard a rumour or two already. You pulled up your hood but felt no especial need to be circumspect.

Your friends were camped out the Gate of St Stephen, so it was down St Stephen's Street you went. The guards watched you with narrow eyes as you pass, but do not halt you.

The Syrian camp was small. Five men take up little room in the sprawling tent city that lay outside Jerusalem's walls. As you approach you note a handsome Syrian, the one your brother had flogged, sitting as a guard with sword bare across his knee. And he dangled Chihirizahd on the other. She knotted his hair and he fondled her happily up the thigh. He had a grin like he'd just heard a fine jest, and dipped his head as if to kiss her neck.

When they saw you they both bolted upright. Chihirizahd had hand to her mouth and eyes wide with shock, but the Syrian had his sword leveled.

"What brings a monk out here?" he demanded, "What business have you in our camp?"

"I had heard you were killed!" Chihirizahd said, backing away, "The king had you all killed!"

>>
"I live," you said, "As does my brother." Could you mask the bite in your words? Perhaps, but the sight of her so quick upon the lap of another send a sharp spike of anger up your gut.

"We had no word," she dropped to her knees, "We heard a hundred different things. That the king had caught traitors and hanged them before the Temple of Solomon, that they were a band of killers sent against the king led by a German mercenary." Tears started to prick her eyes. She wrung her hands.

"My brother is a prisoner of the king, but he is not dead. He is awaiting trial in a month's time," you said.

To that Chihirizahd did weep silent tears. "Then he may be as good as dead, for what hope is there, with the king set against him?"

Such hopelessness writ on her face as tears spilled down past a quivering lip.

"You make my slave cry little monk," the Syrian said, stepping between you, "Perhaps I should make you cry too." He was armed and armoured, while all you had were your robes and sword hidden beneath. But his arrogant tilt of the head, and your defeat the day before struck a sore point.

You draw your sword from beneath your vestment, and unsheathe your blade.

"If you want to fight I will fight," you said, "I fear no Saracen, and she is not your slave. My brother still lives, and I will protect his property in his name."

The Syrian glared at you, and you glared back. And right as it looked like 'd close a wooden rod struck the back of his head.

"Hot blooded fool!" Sabeen scowled. The man dropped his sword and winced, clutching the back of his head. She pointed to you. "Are you so much a horny fool you do not recognise a former comrade?"

You lowered your sword at the sight of her and couldn't keep from grinning, even as she kept a furious scowl. She struck the man this time on the shin, and sent him hopping back.

"My tent," she told you, pointing with the rod, "Now." And strode away. You were quick after her, sheathing your sword.

When you were alone in the tent you saw her standing over a folded out table, looking down on a map, but when she turned she had a smile on her face.

"You look ridiculous," she said, and a bit of wetness appeared in her eyes, "But its damn good to see you safe."

She smoothed a hand across your head. "It's okay," she said, returning your hug. You snorted into her shoulder. "I never believed it. Not once. I don't move for rumours." She pushed you back and cupped your cheek. "And I don't doubt for a second your brother will be well, and you'll be back beside him soon."

>HF, what usually happened in this time period in the rare cases where a muslim and a christian attempted to wed?

Depends on where you were, and this is the 12th century. A Muslim man could freely marry a Christian woman in Muslim lands. With Christian lands it varies, but usually with the understanding one or the other would convert to Christianity it was acceptable. A Christian man was forbidden (and still is in much of the Muslim world) from marrying a Muslim woman unless he converts in Muslim lands however.

In the Holy Land in these days, for the crime of fornicating with a Muslim slave the punishment for a Christian man was castration and the chopping off of the woman's nose.

For a Muslim man sleeping with a Christian, it was death. I assume this extends to non-slave arrangements as well, but how heavily these laws were enforced I cannot say.

Sabeen tapped a toe. "There is not much to say," she said, "Except the corpse stinks, the prisoner won't stop trying to escape, and my men near came to blows drawing lots for the slave girl yesterday. I near had her sold off to a Jew for the trouble it was causing, but she agreed to go with Aymal to settle the matter. I can't rightly blame her. He's a handsome man and a fine warrior," she blushed a little and drank deep, "To speak the truth if you'd taken a day longer I'd have broken camp and returned to my father." She set aside her cup and smiled, "I am glad I waited. If only to see you dressed so foolishly."

You blushed at that. Maybe you should do something about your ridiculous hair cut to spare yourself the jests.

"We're taken up in a Church," you said, "It seems safe for now. And we've got word with the Queen. She meas to help us. Did you know Judith is a princess?"

Sabeen arched a brow. "I did not, no," she leaned back, hand on the hilt of her sword, the other drumming her armoured hip.

"What is your next move?" she asked.

You finished your drink. "I'm trying to gather the others. Sir Raymond and Franz are still missing, same with some of the soldiers."

"We'll keep an eye out here," Sabeen said.

"Thank you," you replied. She was smiling again, and you were too.

>>

Wouldn't it look awfully suspicious for a Kurdish girl to be walking around in the Holy Land? It would probably draw questions and harassment.

She'd have no protection walking the streets of Jerusalem either. She'd probably get kidnapped and sold off
>>
>>35355268
Head back. Grab Solomon. He can take back Chiri
>>
>>35355349
That is ofcourse if they would even let her inside

Why? I'm pretty sure Jerusalem is full of ambiguously brown people walking about, and even the nunnery would have native-born servants or staff helping out with menial chores.
>>
>>35355268
Guys don't forget we're disguised as a monk. If we stay the night here it will draw undue suspicion. As nice as it'd be to hang around the camp, it may be best if we return to the city and resume the search for the others.
>>
>>35355349

>>
>>35355549
I think it's worth it having someone who can move around the city with minimal recognition.

Does the injunction on Muslims entering Jerusalem mean that there are no slaves in there? I find that hard to believe.
>>
>>35355268

Let's not risk the streets twice
>>
You pause at the flap of the tent. "You know, I'm in no hurry to head back," you said, looking over to her, "Maybe I can spend the night in camp? I find it hard to sleep on beds."

"Uh well, if its to help you sleep," Sabeen shrugged, "Of course, my camp is yours."

You nod and touch forelock, slipping out of her tent.

The camp was small but orderly. Two men stand guard over the captured Egyptian, lazily talking in their native tongue as they kept a half eye on the shackled man. The Lancer Aymal scowled by Chihirizahd, who was deep in prayer on her knees. He had an evil eye for her, and an evil eye for the tent you'd come out of, but a respectful nod for you personally.

"You are brave boy," he said, clapping you on the shoulder, "I remember you now. Good on a horse, good with lance. I am much ashamed." He bowed his head and spread his hands. "If you have need, find Aymal and he shall help."

You nod. A fair apology.

>>35355843
We didn't know the whole situation, from his point of view he had won the slave girl fair and square. I'm not saying be overly apologetic, just an admission that our temper is short due to the circumstances and a fight could have been better avoided with a cool head.
>>
You nod to Aymal. "I was angry for more reasons than just this, and did not think," you said, "My brother is always saying to keep a clear head, and I did the opposite." You did not say 'I'm sorry', but he nodded as well, understanding your intent. You walked past.

You squat beside Chihirizahd. You didn't understand her words, but you recognised a prayer when you saw one. She opened an eye to look at you, and wore a look of heart break, cloudy with tears and a pout on her lips.

"What are you doing?" you asked.

"Thanking God," she replied, "And begging for forgiveness. I doubted him and was led astray."

"You thought my brother killed," you said. She nodded. "What would happen to you if he had?"

She threw her hands up the heaven. "The world does not run short on cruelty, who can rightly say? Nothing good, never anything good," she wiped a tear that ran down her cheek. You had always thought of Chihirizahd as much older than you, but now she did not seem so. She looked like a frightened girl like any other, heart caught in her throat and trying not to drown.

"I will make you dinner," she said, taking you by the wrist, "I had made dinner for Sabeen every night until Aymal claimed me. I will make you both dinner tonight, to celebrate the news you bring." Aye, though she was a slave suddenly you saw a sign of freedom in her bearing, in her tears turned into a grin.

"Okay, that sounds...nice," you venture.

"I will not disappoint, little master," she said as she hugged you 'round the head, burying your face between her breasts. It was hard not to well....you blushed red and failed that hard test, and when she parted you kept to your squat for some time as she walked away to prepare for the evening meal, her warmth still lingering on your face.

Eventually you stood. The Syrians as a whole paced about restlessly. Aymal directed two of them to fight him barehanded at the grapple and they stripped off to the waist. He handled them both, having the advantage. He was a good fighter.

Sabeen watched the wrestling standing outside her tent with legs crossed in front, cup at her lip. Eyes like a hawk.

"Hey Sabeen," you say, cracking your knuckles, "Care to wrestle?" You drop into a wide stance, arms extended.

The Syrians laugh and Sabeen smirks.

"Ey, Sabeen, you must strip to your waist too eh?" Aymal offered as he took one of his opponents in a headlock. "I think the boy wants to see you in your little things. Maybe an excuse to grab at them."

"Now is that true, Hugo?" she asked, brushing back her short curls. "No, I think Hugo just wants a decent challenge, instead of you capering monkeys."

She pulled loose the front straps of her hauberk, and then pulled it up over her head and dumped it on the dirt. Then she unstrapped her padded vest beneath, slipped that off 'til she was down to tight cloth bindings round her chest.

Her skin was dark even under her clothing, and you were only just now struck by the fullness of her breasts, hidden under heavy armour, cloth and bindings as well. Her tight stomach and long navel glistening with sweat.

You strip off your own shirt.

"If I win," she said, "You have to cut that ridiculous hair. I cannot look at you and not giggle"

"And if I win?" you asked.

"Will you?" she replied.

The camp gathered, even the prisoner arched his head to get a better view. The two of you squared off.

You come in to grab her but she slips in low and you feel the ground suddenly lift out from under you. Agh!" you have to scream before landing hard an the ground, thrown clear over Sabeen's shoulder. You grab her by the leggings to pull yourself up or try to pull her down, but her other leg wraps 'round you neck and she drops, trapping your outstretched arms and neck in a strange leg lock.

You thrash impotently against her hold and the crowd is laughing, stamping their feet and slapping their knees. Others were flocking from other camps at the commotion, bearded men and veiled women. They seem delighted to see a Frank so easily manhandled.

It was over quick, and Sabeen soon releases you.

"Ey, maybe this is not right," Aymal said, "You are meant to use oils to wrestle."

Sabeen waved off Aymal. "A win is a win, oils won't change that."

But some in the crowd also were calling for a rematch. "Do it right!" an old white bearded man said, "You need the proper oils. It is not right!"

Aymal and another lancer brought out the wrestlers.

"Get it in your hair boy, so she cannot grab it," he said, pouring it into his hands. He slapped it on and ran it through, turning your hair into greasy tangled knots. He lathered it over your shoulders and it slipped down your back, and down into your crack as well, making you squirm. It felt a little weird, but not entirely unpleasant.

Sabeen took a stool and Chihirizahd was brought to oil her. It would be improper for a man to do such with a woman. She worked the oil through her wooly curls and over her shoulders. It slipped down the bindings and made her skin dark and shinning, her navel glistened. She wore a smirk the entire time, and when she rose, dripped with the oils.

"Come on," she fell into a fighting stance and raised her hands.

Aymal pushed you forward.

You squared off against Sabeen. "I'm not going to go easy on you this time," she said, shifting her feet back and forth on the spot. "And if I win this one not only am I cutting your hair I'm going to...ha! Yeah, have you sing at dinner!" Her skin gleamed under the dying sun, a hint of gold flaring up across her very dark skin. You ignored the rising in your loins at the sight of her athletic body gleaming in the sun.

You learned from your previous mistake, and waited for her to make the first move. She came in reach for your waist band, and you did the same. The two of you came together with a wet smack. She grunted, and shifted her grip as her hands slipped on your soggy waist band. You grabbed at her shoulder, pushed her back and tried to hook her, throwing your leg between hers, tried to throw her over it.

She slipped but grabbed you as well and you fell into a tangle atop one another. Your hand slipped up and you pushed yourself off on her breast, a sudden embarrassed pause in your movements which earned you a knee to your mid-section. She tried to trap you 'round the shoulders with her leg again but you caught it on your forearm and pushed her round onto her stomach.

Hands slipping on her wet back, you manage to mount her and slip your arms under her arm pits, lock up her arms. The way you press against her rump is enough to make you blush, but not for long as an elbow tries to catch you around the head.

She squirmed against you like a river otter, some how rolled you onto your back, but you linked your hands behind the back of her head and drove her back down onto her belly. Her cheeks were red and she was puffing as she tried one last time to break your lock, but her legs kicked out.

"I yield," she said, breathless, "I surrender."

You climbed off her, stood and panted, doubled. You offered her a hand.

She gave you half a glare and picked herself up with a half flip to a crouch, then dusted off her knees and stood.

"So, that's one for one," she said, "I still get to cut your hair, but I suppose you get something too."

The crowd booed at your victory and began to disperse, though some old lecher eyes lingered on Sabeen as they did.

You hadn't thought of a reward.

>"Around 200, Liu Bei became a bandit but was chased out of Cao Cao’s territory. He fled to Jing, where he joined Liu Biao. Liu Bei served Liu Biao for several years, but this came to an end with Liu Biao’s death in 208. Hearing of Liu Biao’s death, Cao Cao advanced to attack Jing and Liu Biao’s heir, Liu Cong, surrendered to him. Liu Bei decided to try and resist Cao Cao, so he attempted to seize the city of Jiangling, which held a vast store of military supplies. Cao Cao took an elite cavalry force to reach Jiangling first. Along the way, he encountered Liu Bei’s army at Chang Slope (Changban). The two fought and Cao Cao was victorious. Liu Bei fled, abandoning his wife, his concubines, and even his infant son (Liu Shan).

>"After the battle, Zhao Yun located Lady Gan and Liu Shan and guided them to where Liu Bei had fled. Somehow, that has gotten warped and twisted over the centuries to become Zhao Yun charging through Cao Cao’s whole army in order to rescue them, fighting his way through wave after wave of soldiers to bring Liu Shan safely home. In reality, the three of them just had a pleasant stroll. Even if Cao Cao’s soldiers saw them, they would have simply assumed that the three of them were some of the numerous refugees who had been following Liu Bei. Cao Cao’s soldiers would have had no idea who they were and no reason to attack them. In spite of the prominence this story plays in the Zhao Yun mythos, the simple fact is that there were no great heroics at Chang Slope. Zhao Yun was basically just a guide.

>"Still, Liu Bei was grateful for this, so he gave Zhao Yun the title General of the Standard. I haven’t actually been able to find this rank listed anywhere else except for Wei Yan’s SGZ, so I think this is just a title Liu Bei made up to reward his friends. Not that he had the authority go be making people generals anyway, but whatever."

"I want you to wear a dress tonight," you said with a smirk, "Like a proper woman."

She glowered at you put nodded. "Fine, fine! Just see if I have any. But you're sure going to look stupid shaved bald like an old man!" She kicked out at a rock and strutted off, ringing out her oil thick hair as she went.

Aymal patted you on the shoulder. "Ahaha, you humbled her," he said, shaking his head, "She will be in a mood tonight. I have seen no man beat her before. Watch she does not confuse you for goat meat and cut you."

He helped you scrape off the oil and wash out your hair. You dug oil from your ears even and had to strip off to untangle your brush and clear your crack.

"Eh, you Franks are uncut?" Aymal shook his head, "And unshaved? You really are barbarians." He motioned to his own smooth groin.

"How do you do that?" you asked.

"Shells, and wax," he said, "It is good to keep this area smooth. Keeps it clean. Our women also do this." He clapped you on the back, "I shall show you one day, yes?"

Maybe, for now you finished cleaning out with dry towels and a little water, until you are just a little damp instead of oily, and dress for dinner. A nice tunic, clean hose. You go to Sabeen's tent where Chihirizahd had been cooking.

Sabeen stood by her table and chair. She wore a dress with flaring skirts and no sleeves, an ornate belt 'round her waist. She had a red blouse with a plunging neckline delicately tied at the front, and a high stiff collar. She was not smiling, but had her chin high, and curtsyed for you.

"Dost thou approve of this precious flower?" she asked, doing a spin that threw up her skirt and showed a flash of smooth black thigh.

"You look," she dipped a curtsy, "You look good." Your face was growing hot and you offered her a chair. She folded up her skirts and took a seat, face very still and eyes on the table before her.

You sat across from her, adjusting your sword. When Chihirizahd laid out a plate of goat meat and rice, Sabeen took your knife and cut you a chunk, held it up to your mouth.

"Wouldst thou eat from my knife, sir?" she asked, her voice still strange and soft. She batted her eyes.

You open your mouth and pluck the meat from the tip of the knife. She drops the point on the top of the desk and twirls it in the palm of her hand, shearing up whirls of sawdust. You ate a little more but she ate none, just watching you.

You chuckle. "No, not really," you said. Chihirizahd passed you a cup of wine and you downed it quickly. "I-I like the real Sabeen. Can you please go back to being the real Sabeen please?" You'd give anything to see her in arms and armour right now, cussing a soldier out. Not that it didn't suit her, the dress. The way it cut to her figure was very...uh.

She sighed and put a hand to her chest, affecting a breathless, weak tone.

"Mayhap this is the real Sabeen," she said, "And you've just unlocked my true womanly nature after you bested me." She pursed her lips, but couldn't keep the snort from ripping from her nostrils. "You-you showed me a woman has no place on the battlef-" but she couldn't keep it up and gave hard snorts, bashed her hand on the tabletop and started laughing. She drummed the table and hooted, spilling rice and meat both.

"By fuck and Isa I cannot keep that up!" she said and fell back in a slouch with a grin, "But oh its worth it. You look like a chicken spotted a cat in its yard." She grabbed the back of your head and butted her forehead against it.

"Well there you go, me in women's clothing. You got your reward. But I still got mine." She ruffled your hair and chuckled.

You laughed with relief as well.

You spend the night with conversation and jokes, and by the time you are off to bed its late. You lie out under the stars. You were still worried about your brother, but you felt the future might not be so grim...

You arise to a splash of water across the face.

"Time to cut those locks," Sabeen said, crouching over you with scissors in hand. Aymal grinned behind her.

You returned to Jerusalem a bald monk, scalp itchy and bare.

You decide to search the city for your friends again, and hunt through the Old Jewish Quarter. Franz was a Jew, maybe he'd be attracted to it by instinct. You...didn't really know any other Jews.

You kicked through an overgrown path. Some folks were spying from the flat tops of their homes, curious of the bald young monk. You came across porters rolling bones and a smith crafting kitchen wares, but had little luck spying your friends.

You came down an alley that led only to a high wall and sighed. Birds nesting in a tree twittered at you, and a slight breeze ran across your bald head.

"You!" oh hell, not again. The same split mouth guard came scowling out with sword drawn this time. "Think I won't recognise you because you cut your hair again? You'll not be going to a cell," he said, "I've a mind to kill you."

He stood across the only opening present, your back was to the wall. You could see no other sign of human life. Just the singing birds.

You charge the man down the alley, little caution in your assault. You cut but he catches you, turns your point and tries to cut you cross the face in turn. You win the point back and roll it 'round, goring it into his shoulder but sinking only into maille. He breaks the bind and cuts you cross the arm, but his sword bats only at the thick cloth, cutting a slash but leaving the arm uninjured. You strike each other again, and stamp his foot hard, trying to overpower the bigger man to no avail, trying to collapse his weak on your strong. But its fruitless for both. You batter each other back, his cuts making ribbons of your robes and finally nicking your chin. Blood dripped thick and constant but it was no great injury.

You close in and come into a bind but your sword skates through, cutting him across the cheek. He backs away snarling, blood welling under his fingers.

You close with weary breath, and as you close you give a harsh cry, launching out with sword point. You catch his blade but he bats it away, cutting you hard across the chest. You gasp aloud as you feel a sudden numbness in your chest, a coldness in your legs and groin as he opens up your robes and the mail as well. You stagger back gaping as skin hangs in flaps, red meat and blood running through your shirt. You drop your sword and clasp at your chest, and the man-at-arms moves in with a vicious smile.

"Nay!" from above the man came, and landed hard on the man-at-arm's shoulders. He crumpled under the heavy armoured form. Sir Raymond, sword plunged through the man-at-arm's neck, a wolf on his prey, or a hawk perhaps.

He had leapt from the flat rooftop.

"Aye lad, be well," he said, drawing out his sword and coming to your side. He knelt and touched your forehead. "Aye, 'tis a bad wound, but no matter." He clicked his fingers and two young men came from down the alley running. Local lads. "My new squires," he said, "Recently taken on as reward for service."

He had them carefully lift you between them.

"All be well lad, all be well!" but his smile was forced and your eyes were on the bloody carving in your chest. They did not carry you far, hustling you through a door and into a living quarters.

"Set him down here, down here!" your vision was fading, you saw a man with needle and thread. You felt your self lifted up and lain upon something.

"Say a prayer m'lord, this'll not be easy," he said.

"God's sake, that's Hugo!" Was that Franz's voice? You could not see, your eyes were growing dim.

"He'll be fine so long as he keeps a hard heart and love of god, easy man" you heard Raymond say, but you were sinking, swimming away...

You see nothing, hear nothing. Your eyes close and there is a moment of darkness, and then they are opening bleary on a small room. A man sits by the bed, reading a book. He looks up to you. He has a very gaunt face, and a small neat beard that was very grey.

"Good morning," he said, closing it up, "I am Benicio, physician by trade, and you are a very blessed young man." He stood and peered over you, patting your chest. "A nice healthy scar, but also no sword slinging for a little while, yes?"

"Yes?" you said weakly, what else was there to say? You'd near been opened up and killed for sure had help not come for you. A miracle, maybe.

You lay in bed with head too heavy to lift, and closed your eyes, lucky to be alive...

Awsome but how do Crits work? I ask because Blaise's axe is fucking awsome
>>
>>35359758

Also, no shield.

That doesn't sound healthy, considering how badly we roll.
>>
>>35359758
You roll over 90 on a hit, roll under ten and you get critted. Damage is mitigated by a lot of factors that I'm too lazy to explain.

but dem Crits

I thought that played into the Degree if success, like say Wilhelm is trying to diplomance someone and rolls shit he still has his CHA to carry him over the line.
>>
>>35359912

What was the war rating of the guard?
>>
In light of this abysmal showing, we should replace Hugo and Franz's horses with coursers as soon as possible when we are able to.

In fact we should just retire and become a minstrel.

>>35359936
I'm bad at explaining rules, but pretty much base damage is determined by gauging your War against his War, the wider a gap determining a larger base damage, and then further mitigated with rolls, adding or subtracting damage.

ahh okay that makes sense
