Your name is Aldan, a young man in the trading village of Northneck. For most of your life you have been filled with a wanderlust that is too great for your tucked away home here. The only real stories are the caravans that come through your little mountain village. They tell of places full of light, deserts or orange sand, lush islands and even rumors that Magic is returning to the land. You want to explore every corner of the Empire…but you’re just a kid. Your story hasn’t even started yet.

Before we begin, we need to know more about you. What is your history?

>Son of the town blacksmith, you’re strong and have a weapon with you
>Son of the town Lord, You’ve got a bit of extra money and you can talk your way out of anything
>Son of the town apothecary, you have some equipment for healing and know a lot about herbs and plants.
>Son of the town Priest. Raised to worship the Four Gods, you can perform minor blessings and are pretty knowledgeable about the legends of the land.

You are the /daughter/ of the town Lord. You are a charismatic young person, with a natural back to get yourself out of trouble and to convince your peers to see things your way.

You thought you knew everything about the surrounding area. You'd explored enough as a child, to the chagrin of your parents trying to raise you to be a proper young lady and rule the small townships in these mountains with a fortuitous marriage. But you come across a cave you’d swear was not there before.

You walk inside, the walls and floor unnaturally smooth, and there is an unusually large cavern inside. A man, at least you think it’s a man, is sitting in the center with a blanket in front of him and a few items set on it.

“It’s about time you got here. Now, hurry up and choose something.” You’re very confused, but the items look familiar. It’s the basic items representing the Four Gods that your people worship. You feel compelled by the glaring eyes of the person before you to pick something.

Do you choose

The man grins and stands up, wrapping the remaining items quickly and flinging them over his shoulder. “Knew you’d pick that one. I’ll leave you two alone.” You’re confused again, shaking your head at the strange man running away, when you hear a strange voice echo around you.

“Hehe, he is a strange one. But he gets the job done.” You turn around and nearly fall to your knees. You were never a religious person but you’d have to be blind not to recognize the being before you. The shadows stretch and twist around him as he leans against the remains of a decrepit throne. He is Varsa, the God of the Shadows, Keeper of Ambition and Vengeance.

You lower yourself onto your knee and ask the god what he wishes of you, reverently. He smiles down at you, walking over and standing directly in front of you. “Oh, you are good. I like you.” He pats your head and leans down, resting on the balls of his feet. “So, let me put it bluntly. I have a bet with my brothers and sisters to see who deserves to be the head God. Two are just too stupid and one is just too cowardly, so Obviously, I’m the natural choice. So we decided to see how well we do on a more…even playing field. We each have our champion, and whichever one amasses the most power and can conquer the others, wins! It was a bit random who the champions would be, but I had a feeling when I saw you that you’d make the best choice.” He winks at you, smirking a bit.

“So, simple enough. Become powerful. Become a legend. Hell, become the Empress! As long as you kill or force the other three champions to submit, you’re golden. You’ll have the head God on your side after that, and nothing will get in your way. Deal?”

He holds out a hand, waiting for you to shake it.

You shake his hand, and he pulls you up to your feet. “Wonderful! You’ll be perfect! No worries. I can’t imagine Morra or Hema will have their champion kill you, so I think you’ll just have to worry about that brute Rosk…” You recognize the names of the other gods, but are a bit confused at what he means. “Oh, they’re giving the same spiel to their champions now too. Though I’m sure their much more somber about it.”

You ask about how you could identify the other Champions and how you will avoid being harmed by them. “Well, that’s the thing. I can’t exactly tell you who or where they are. In fact, I won’t be talking to you too much. But you will have some power, and the more you use it and the more you uphold my sphere of influence, the more power you will obtain. It won’t look like much now, but trust me, more will be coming to you soon.” He places a hand on your head and suddenly your mind is filled with visions.

Hidden shadows, dark corners, the stealth of assassins and the whispers of those with darkest ambitions.

You have gain
>God-Chosen, it is harder for you to die (i.e. starvation, illness, wounds, etc.)
>Uncanny Charisma – Much easier to sway people with your words
>Invisibility – Once per day, you may chose to go completely invisible. Your body is unable to be seen or heard (can still make noises by hitting/dropping things)

He takes your arm and starts walking you towards the exit. “This is the start of a wonderful partnership, I’m sure of it. I suggest you leave your town immediately. South is a good direction, I’d think. So many big cities, so many opportunities. Even the Capital if that’s where your ambitions lead you.” You reach the mouth, and suddenly you are in your home, no sign of the cave anywhere. “Take care, little Aldan. I’m excited to see where your story leads you…” And with that, he is gone.

You’re a little shell shocked, but you have also never felt stronger. You need to think about your next move and where to go.

You decide to go speak with your instructor about what to do next. Though your father did cross your mind, the man who had helped shape your mind from birth seems like the wisest option. You find him sitting among your families books, of course. He was a skeptical man, bent over by a long life and the heavy weight of dealing with the impotent ambitions of a minor lord and effectively raising the wild child you used to be. You sit down at his side and try to contain your rampant emotions as you try to fathom completely what just happens. You tell your story as best you can, but he looks at you a bit skeptically.

“I don’t wish to call you a liar. But you must admit that your story is pretty fantastical, Aldan.” You need to convince him that your words are true.

You pull the ring off your finger, ‘when did it slip on?’ you wonder, and hold it out to him. “The Ring is Varsa’s symbol, but there are many rings, little one…”his words trail off as he turns the ring over in his hand. It is shifting slightly, between a darkened silver and an onyx black in the light. “That’s odd…I’ve never seen this kind of material before…” He looks at you, his eyes unsure. “You’re saying you were visited by Varsa? This ring resembles the stories of his own shaded ring…”

He hands you back the ring. “As odd as it is, I do believe you Aldan. Though you were never an honest child, I could tell when you truly meant something growing up. If that is the case, and you were given this mission from one of the four, then you must do what you believe is right and follow their words. My own God, Hema the Wise, will probably condemn me for this, but you are worth more to this doddering old man.”

He peers around, checking to see if anyone was standing near the doorway before leaning in. “I would not tell your father about this. He is a greedy man, but his mind is too small for anything above what he has. My advice to you, is follow your new mentor’s advice. Take what you can and flee. I will concoct a story, but the God’s direct you now, not the whims of your father.” You thank him and return to your room.

You search the house, as you go you feel a bit lighter on your feet then you ever have before. The stealth just seems to be completely natural to you. You manage to find some spare blankets, a bit of food and a water container. In the middle of your searching, you stop by your father’s office. You hear him inside, shuffling around with some papers and muttering to himself crossly. You remember that there is some money and jewels locked away in this room, and you learned the combination to the safe one night while overhearing your mother and father. If you wanted to, you could probably use your invisibility and sneak inside to get some extra money as well.

We should find out what the greatest problems facing the realm are. Then convince people to follow us in order to fix them.

>Ask father & mentor what problems are great enough that people would follow an unknown minor noble in order to fix them.
>>
You decide not to steal from your father. It would be easier not to have to worry about him coming after you for stolen goods, and leave him to his pettiness. You find a small knife in the kitchen on the way back to your room and that is all you decide to take. You pack it into a small bag and slip out the servants exit in the back. As soon as your feet hit the dirt you run until you are on the far edge of town. Here is where all the carts and merchants rest. The roads are well lit, so some of them are going to depart into the night towards the most populated cities in order to reach it by morning’s light. You need to decide where to go, and how you will get there.

All it takes is a flutter of your eyelash and a simple smile to tip the single gold piece into the merchants hand. He is part of the larger caravans, so you aren’t worried about him trying to rob you as you depart into the evening. You Are heading South, towards Faran-Ra. You’ve only ever heard story about the City of Stars, the town covered in lights and crystals. You decide it is time to sleep to make the trip go by, and according to the driver you will be there by tomorrow morning should the roads stay safe…

You awake with a jolt, as the driver is nudging your arm. “We’re here.” He says, helping you up and out of the cart. He departs quickly, but you don’t need him anymore. You’re here.

The fabled city, the Capital of the strongest empire the world has ever seen. A city of over 3 million people, and at it’s center the Castle of the Emperor, his wives and children, and the most powerful political players. You are so overwhelmed, you aren’t sure what your next move should be.

What do you do?

Anything we do requires money. to make money fast requires illegal stuff. which is stupid to do in the capital.
I say we go to tara and get rich there then come back here later.

but if we insist on staying. i think we need to use our powers to acquire power and authority. that means working for some scheming noble. problem is to find one.

An excellent starting point is the temples of our god. surely his priests are scheming on their own and will have jobs for us where we can hone our powers and gain some wealth and contacts.

you need to be the loyal visir / high ranking noble BEFORE you kill the emperor. as well as having your own army just in case.

and what if invisibility doesn't last long enough? also, magic is coming back, so we might still be caught even with invisibility.

also, we have zero training or experience as an assassin.

Showing our ring to the priests at our temple is an instant in. Of course, those fucks are gonna start scheming on us right off the bat, but with charisma and some well-placed invisible assassinations, I bet we could be running the place soon enough.

Even if we don't rise ranks, it's a good place to start, and maybe gather info on the the other gods/champs

>>
You decide to find the home of your god in this city, and with barely any effort you are on your way to the Temple of Varsa in the East District. This District is one of the richest in the Capital, with many of the stronger merchants stationed near the God of Ambition’s worshipers.

The temple itself is grand, with stained glass depicting many of the legends of Varsa and gold ornamentation on the walls. There is a priest quietly praying at the front, clad in black and covered with Tattoos. With your knowledge of the aristocracy, you are able to identify a Duke praying fervently in the corner, holding a small holy symbol in his hands.

we do NOT reveal ourselves as a champion, we do NOT reveal to him our powers. we remain mysterious.

>>35388291

You decide to use your invisibility to gain a bit of info on the Duke. You find a corner and touch the Ring, and your body quickly fades from view. Though your movements are muffled, every other sound and sight seems to sharpen a bit. You crouch forward and sit next to the Duke, leaning in to listen to him.

“….lease Lord Varsa, God of Vengeance and Forsaken Oaths. Let Baron Adworth be struck down like the worm he is. Let his livelihood fall before him and let him die in a pool of his own filth for the affront to he has set upon me. Please Lord Varsa, God of Vengeance… “ He repeats that prayer over and over. You move to the back of the room and lean against the wall, still invisible.

You wait for an hour, and then the Duke finally leaves. It’s the middle of the day, and there aren’t many people in the temple right now. But the priest stays there, quietly praying. You approach him and dissipate your invisibility to speak to him.

“I’ve known you would arrive. Varsa visited me in my dreams and said someone would come. But it was still wise for you to wait and stay hidden. That cleverness will keep your heart beating.” He stands and looks at you. His body is thin, but intricately covered with markings. “I am to offer you all that I can for our God. I am the High Priest of Varsa, at your service Mistress.” He bows deeply. He says he will answer some questions you have and help you become acclimated to this city.

But I have not asked.” He tells you where the Duke lives, also in this District it seems, and that the Duke has been in some monetary strain lately.

You ask the High Priest About himself and he bows solemnly. “I am but a servant of Varsa, My life means nothing but what he dictates it so.” You press a bit further and he sighs, relenting under your charm. “When I was a child, my mother was killed by my father and I was left for dead. I swore my life to Varsa in exchange for a chance at killing him. I was given that chance, and in exchange I became his priest. It was through sheer devotion and his will that I was given the title of High Priest. I no longer go by that name, but I was once called ‘Philip’.” Another priest comes in and whispers something into the High Priest’s ear. “I’m sorry, Mistress. There are temple matters that need attending to. If you wish it, you may stay in one of the Acolyte cells and access to any of the resources at our disposal.” He follows the other priest through a door deeper into the Temple.

You are now on your own, free to do as you please.

You follow the High Priest's path into the temple. It's a very well crafter building, and you find the residential cells, where another informed priest tells you where your room can be found. You also find a large library full of historical texts and cases full of various artifacts of great value to the Four Gods and Varsa. You're walking along and you nearly trip over a pile of books. Looking down, you see a young man, probably only a year younger than you, asleep among the books. He's jolted awake and looks at you and the books around him.

"Oh god no, Brother Victor is going to kill me!" He's frantically picking up the tomes and trying to put them back on the shelves in some sort of order. He's too busy to notice the much older, robe clad man heading this way.

You step forward a few steps and stop the man before he can get within view of the boy. "I'm sorry ma'am, have you seen a young boy around here? If I find that lazy little bastard, I'm going to put him out to dry!" You calm his anger, and it takes hardly any effort to turn the topic onto something else. The man is blushing in minutes and talking about the beauty of the temple and how lovely it is this time of year. The boy stands up and turns around, and nearly faints seeing you two. "O-oh, brother! I swear I wasn't sleeping, I was-"

"Oh, it's fine boy. It's fine. I was just talking with this lovely lady. Just make sure that the library is cleaned up completely this evening, all right? It was a pleasure to meet you, madam." HE waddles away, smiling to himself.

"I'm sorry that I tripped you ma'am." he says, refusing to look at you. "My name is Charles. Thank you for that."

You respond in a light but flirty way, watching him blush profusely. He is won over ludicrously easily and you walk around with him as he finishes his chores. He tells you about the status of the Emperor, many nobles feel as though he is becoming fat and lazy on his throne and someone needs to step in before his equally lazy sons ruin the nation. The other temples are also in a flurry for some reason but no one knows why. And that some of the artifacts here are doing weird things that no one but Charles sees.

“Take this one, for example.” He stops by a large glass case. Inside is a long black thorn. “It’s said this was a basilisk fang that Varsa pulled out himself. It’s supposed to be super deadly to anyone not protected by Varsa and it’s considered a holy symbol. I swear to you, I hear snakes in the night when I’m here keeping guard. But no one believes me!”

You lay your hand on the glass, and you feel a slight spark from below. Huh, well you are the Champion…

Unlock the case, slowly.

You give Charles a cute little smile and ask him to please open the case. He’s a bit apprehensive, but putting your hand on his shoulder and asking politely gets him to comply rather quickly. It’s comically easy to do, and you keep that in mind for later. He opens the case and you two lean in close. “Ok, so the legend goes that Varsa challenged some snake guy to a fight…” Charles start going on about this legend, but you just reach out and touch the fang. Suddenly, your sight is plunged into darkness.

When you open your eyes, you’re back in the decrepit throne room. Varsa is sitting on the trone, playing with the crown. “Wow, you’re moving faster than I though you would. It’s been a long time since that thing has been touched. You humans have this strange fascination with locking things away so you can’t use them…SO!” He stands up. “Your power has grown a little for interacting with that thing, so I guess it’s only right that you get something new. I can either expand your invisibility or give you a shiny new power.”

Lets increase our number powers. Invisibility is cool and all, but you know what is even cooler? Shooting lasers out of your eyes or fireballs from your hands! WE COULD GET THAT

votin' new power

You decide to get a new power, to see what kind of versatility you have at your disposal. Varsa smiles and reaches out his hand, touching the back of your arm. “Wonderful. This is something I picked up from a sore loser. Let’s see if you can do something better with it than he did.” And in that same instant, you are gone.

You draw back, and Charles is confused. “You shouldn’t touch that stuff! It’s dangerous! I mean, I don’t believe in that sort of stuff like curses, but still. I’d get in trouble…” You look down at your arm as he’s talking. A simple black tattoo, like a snake, rests on your wrist.

>You gain: Shadow Snake. You may summon a small snake minion one a day to execute commands for you. It is not very strong, but it can move through any sized spaces and is incredibly poisonous. The snake only exists for 24 hours or until you dissipate it.

It’s nightfall now, and your mind turns towards the possibility of visiting the Duke. Or perhaps you could sleep. Maybe even see the nightlife of this city.

You decide to retire for the night. You bid Charles farewell and return to your bed. You think about the power you have just received and smile fondly. It has been just over a day, and already you can start to see your plans coming together. It’s almost unreal, but now you are moving forward. You will become the most powerful person in the world, and you feel confident that when the time comes and you will be pitted against other users of magic and the forces of the gods, you will be prepared.

(I need to get food and do homework, so I’m saying this is a good place to end for today)

using our powers grows them. thus we should use them often. sleeping to recharge our invisibility is good. but don't leave your stuff unused before going to sleep.

we should summon the shadow snake every single day. we can send it to spy, we can milk its venum, we can have it hide in our sleeve and be ready to pounce on an enemy at our command

Also, we should get the guy to tell us about the other items he feels "odd things" from.
>>
>>35390229
This, entirely this.

Let's not forget about our business with the Duke, but Charles seems to be our best bet at advancing our understanding of the newly budding Magic in this world, as >>35390113
pointed out. We should be asking him about the other "oddly behaving artifacts" and getting him on a track to study magic ASAP.
