I'm Andreas Sternennacht, Knight of Marconetti and the unwilling recipient of the title of "Knight of the Starry Skies." While my primary duty over the past few months has been to look after the King's daughter Elena, an abrupt attack has out an end to that for the time being.

While Elena and her siblings Luciana and Emilio head down to the neighboring kingdom of Granache for protection, I've been temporarily removed from my post as Royal Bodyguard and am helping the King in his efforts to root out any more traitors. We've had a bit of luck on that end, but still nothing in terms of actually finding out who's behind this entire mess to begin with.

With any luck, this spy that we just met up with might have some info on that.

"Since you went through the trouble of contacting the castle and all, I assume that you have some leads for us?" I say.
"Numbers, location, that kind of thing?" Anatole joins in.
"Umm, yes..." the spy nods. "During that incident when they tried to free Clemens Daimler from confinement in the castle's dungeon, Prince Alberto thought thought it might be a good idea to let another of the prisoners who were freed from their cells to 'get away,' so to speak..."
"What, you mean as bait?" I ask.
"Exactly."

Nice going, Your Highness!

"The prisoner in question was a Devil Child who was captured during the initial attack on the royal family, and I personally tailed her to a secluded location in the woods a to the east of the capital," the spy says. "It's an old shack normally used by travellers as shelter, and they seem to be using it as a makeshift base while they plot their next move."
"What, so they're planning another attack on the King?" Anatole asks. "In that case, we should just run up on them and-"
"No, that's not it," he shakes his head. "I wasn't able to get too close for fear of getting caught, but they seem to have given up on this mission of theirs... whatever it was. They haven't gotten any contact with whoever was their employer, and I didn't spot any of the traitorous guards among their number."

That's a relief to hear...

"Great," Anatole nods. "So let's flush 'em out while they're disorganized! Once we clear these guys out, there's only the traitors to deal with, and then my work here is done!"
"Wait," I say, holding up my hand. "I definitely agree with what you're saying, but let's not rush things here."
"But who knows how long they'll even still be there?" he shrugs. "I mean. they could've already fled by the time we get there if we start dawdling!"
"I'd rather err on the side of caution and let them get away than rush in without knowing the full picture and get one of us killed in the process."

I don't want to have to end up explaining to Gregory how I got one of his guys killed, and I REALLY don't want him to have to explain to Elena that I got myself killed.

"Fair enough," Anatole sighs. "I don't wanna die without at least leaving a couple of bastards to carry on the family name, after all."
"...yeah, sure," I reply, rolling my eyes. "So, Mr. Spy," I turn to him, "do you have any other intel on these guys before we go chasing after them?"
"Umm..." the spy scratches his head, "they seem to be split amongst themselves. On one aide there's the half-dragons, and on the other are the Devil Children," he explains. "They seem to have different ideas on where they should escape to, and either side holds more loyalty to themselves than the other. It's probably more apt to see them as two separate factions that are working in concert than a single unit at this point. I'm not sure how exactly you'd be able to use that, but you asked for all the information that I had so..."
"No, that's fine," I shake my head. "Thanks, that could come in useful."

Though I'm not really sure how exactly it would at this point.

"If that's all you have, I guess we can get going..." I say. "...but first, do you have some way to get in touch with the castle? Just in case, I'd like for the King to know where we are in case something happens."
"Umm, sure," the spy nods.

He then lifts his head to the sky and lets out a soft whistle, and a few seconds later a rather nondescript-looking bird lands on his hand.

"This is my personal messenger bird," the spy says. "He's been trained to deliver messages only to the King or Princess Luciana... but she's currently out of the country, so the message will be for the King's eyes only."
"Good," I nod. "Less chance of it being intercepted by someone else along the way."
"Exactly."

Once the message is sent, Anatole and I follow the spy as he leads us through several side streets and eventually out of the city limits entirely.

After several hours of walking at a brisk pace, I start to understand just why it is that nobody's found these guys until now- we're in the middle of NOWHERE, and I honestly have no idea where the hell I even am right now. I'm just glad that we're going east and not west, as I have no desire to occidentally cross over the border and end up in Ancellottan territory.

Not that such a thing would even be possible to begin with since that border is guarded insanely tightly, but that worry's still in the back of my mind. Call it a lingering trauma from having been posted there for so long before my knighting.

"Stop," the spy whispers as he holds an arm out to block our way. "This is it."

Not too far off in the distance, I can see the shack that the spy was talking about. There doesn't seem to be anything along the lines of visible traffic or proof that anyone's inside, though... there isn't even smoke coming from the chimney.

"This is as far as we can safely get while still speaking," the spy says to us. "And I'm not much in the way of combat, so this is as far ss I'm going this time."
"Fair enough," I nod.
"Huh, you'd at least expect some of the trees to be cut down for firewood or a few animal carcasses around if someone was inside," Anatole says. "That's how we were always able to tell that bandits had been by, anyways."
"I get what you're saying," I say, turning to him, "but these guys are assassins, not bandits. Staying covert's like their main goal in all this."
"I guess so," he nods. "So how are we gonna go about doing this?"

"Let's try to listen in on what they're saying before we bust in," I say, turning to Anatole. "Might as well get some reliable information while we can, you know?"
"You're the boss," Anatole replies.
"Well I wish you both luck," the spy says, nodding to the two of us. "I'll head back into the city now and get in touch with the King... with any luck, backup will arrive to help subdue whoever you're able to capture."
"Thanks," I say to him. "Be careful on the way back."
"Same goes to you two," the spy replies. "Try not to underestimate them... while some have superstrength, others are able to manipulate fire and the like without casting spells. Try not to mix them up, it'll only make things harder for you."
"Gotcha," Anatole replies.

Once the spy's out of sight, the two of us carefully sneak down to the cabin and position ourselves by a window so that we can listen to whatever's going on inside.

We're going to bust into the shack from either side and take them off-guard. I heard four people talking in there, and the place is pretty small to begin with so I don't think it's too likely that there's many more than that. But even so, that's no reason to be careless.

Alright, this is it. The moment of truth. While Anatole hurries off in the opposite direction, I race to the northern house while whispering a spell as quietly as I can.

"Streaking through the sky, a trail of stardust that splits the sky in twain," I whisper as I pass by a window and run a few years away from the shack. Thanking wGod for the fact that the Script that's trailing me decided to manifest underneath the windows where nobody can see, I draw my sword and continue chanting. "Breaking through all that stands in my way, the piercing light shatters all that would impede its flight."

Duck down. Sword at the ready.

"Meteo Wing."

Almost as if the spell is sensing my desire for stealth, the aura of energy that surrounds me crackles at almost a low hum as it propels me towards the shack.

>[1/?]

Almost as if the spell is sensing my desire for stealth, the aura of energy that surrounds me crackles at almost a low hum as it propels me towards the shack.

The rickety wooden door and walls of the makeshift hideout hold up about as well as tissue paper as I fly right through them and crash into two men as I fly towards the center of the room.

...or more like I crash -through- two of them.

Oh well, that's two less opponents that I have to face.

I release the spell and begin to decelerate JUST as the wall that I'm approaching explodes maybe a few feet off from where I'm landing, sending flying shards of wood everywhere as Anatole's cape-drill pulls him inside the shack.

I release the spell and begin to decelerate JUST as the wall that I'm approaching explodes maybe a few feet off from where I'm landing, sending flying shards of wood everywhere as Anatole's cape-drill pulls him inside the shack.

I quickly chant the incantation for Ephemeris Edge while the spiraling drill that Anatole's cape has formed soils tighter and tighter around his arm until it resembles something like a long, spindly claw.

"You're all under arrest!" Anatole says with a wicked smile as he takes a defensive stance.

While our opponents scramble to defend themselves while screaming obscenities, I scan the room to see just how many of them there are. Ignoring the remains of the two men that I crashed through and the one guy who Anatole's drill pierced along with the wall, there are three people along either of the remaining walls.

To the east, there's two younger guys who look completely bewildered by our sudden appearance, along with another guy with graying hair who seems to be trying to catch his breath. From the ears, I can tell that he's a Devil Child.

And to the west, there's a middle-aged man, a guy who seems to be in his late teens and a girl who I think I remember seeing back during that first attack in the assembly hall.

"Sacred lights that watch from above," I hurriedly chant as the two men keep their distance... and then I soon realize just why it is that they're doing that.

A sharp-looking tendril of water is shooting right towards me.

"GUARDIAN SIGN!" I shout, dropping my casting of Ephemeris Edge. Before I end up impaled, the stardust floating in the air gathers directly in front of me and forms a bare outline of a square... and then the shape itself becomes solid just long enough for the water tendril to crash harmlessly into it.

It's been a while since I was forced to waste a charge of Ephemeris Edge on this, but I'm still glad that I did.

"Sacred lights that watch from above, I call you to my side," I chant as I race past the two men and charge the older Devil Child. "Become my sword, my shield, and entrance my enemies with your transient glow! Ephemeris Edge!"

In a panic, the Devil Child throws up a protective dome of water... but it does nothing to deter my attack. Hell, I barely feel any resistance at all as my sword slides through the watery shield. And then the man who cast it.

He barely has time to scream as I continue to pull my sword downwards and right through him, vertically bisecting the man and leaving a bloody mess where he once stood. Stardust and the spray of blood from my kill lingers in the air as I turn back towards my other two opponents... and I can see the fear in their eyes.

With that last coating having been used to cut a man in half, I recast the spell as I charge towards one of the two remaining men that I have left to face. Once I finish these two off, I can get to helping Anatole out with his opponents.

"The hell even IS that thing!?" a man shouts as he tries desperately to hold Anatole's cape-claw back with his knife.
"Well, you see..." Anatole laughs, "...the cape is the sign of a hero, and you three are clearly villains. So doesn't it make perfect sense to punish the wicked with such an object?"

The man doesn't answer, only continuing to hold back with his knife before realizing that his current defensive attacks aren't going to work. Jumping backwards, he uses the opening created by the splitsecond that Anatole stumbles forwards to grab onto his cape-claw and pull it towards himself.

"Now!" he screams. "Don't just stand there and watch, use your fucking fire magic to burn this guy's cape!"
"Y- yeah, okay!" the Devil Child girl stammers as she hurls a fireball towards Anatole.

"Wh... what the fuck!?" the man who's still holding onto Anatole's cape shouts. "This thing's made of cloth, how the hell's it able to block fire!?"
"Well you see," Anatole says as his cape coils back around his arm, "this cape was hand-woven from a the hair of a Draconic princess," he laughs.
"Wha..." the Devil Child girl stumbles back in disbelief. "...so fire wouldn't work at all..."

And then the green-haired Knight's grin grows even wider.

"Y- you fucking-" the man grunts as he tries his best to break free of Anatole's grip.

Anatole's grin vanishes from his face, and he simply glances at his opponent with a derisive gaze.

"What, it's your own fault for being tricked so easily," he says before his cape constricts around the man.

Anatole seems to be having a good old time fighting over there, but these two guys that I'm facing off against really aren't slouches. I've already wasted an entire charge of Ephemeris Edge just from blocking their attacks, and this is honestly getting old...

Three out of the four walls of that shack now have massive holes in them, I guess II should be thankful that that kick landed me outside instead of having the entire building collapsing on me.

"Balance is still kind of spotty thanks to my head hitting the wall...

...and then going through it...

...but I still have enough in me to start up another casting of Ephemeris Edge, and just as the two half-dragons (there's no way in hell that a normal human could kick that hard) leap through the hole in the wall and start towards me. The one that did the kicking starts to break into a sprint just as I finish casting the spell.

But just before he comes within range of my sword, something hits the man and he's sent flying back into the building. Both me and my remaining attacker look on in shock as he hits... -something- and then the entire shack comes crumbling down.

"The one and only!" Leopold says as he and Monique rush to my side. "Our own line of interrogation didn't amount to anything, so we decided to join you guys..."
"Sorry for being so late," Monique sighs.

Utterly horrified by the sudden appearance of TWO Knights, the leftover half-dragon that I was fighting slowly backs towards the rubble of the shack.

"Not so fast," Monique says as he swings his sword at the man and sends a massive wave of ice flying towards him. He doesn't even have time to block before it completely engulfs him.

Well that takes care of that... but there's still the matter of the wreckage of that shack and the fact that Anatole was still in there when it collapsed. But just as I'm about to rush in and try and dig him out, he emerges from it in an explosion of splinters.

"Yeah, yeah..." Anatole sighs. "Don't worry about the foreigner, he's only on loan so it's not a loss of this country's military power if he dies..."

Though Anatole listened, the girl just sits there looking completely lost as a long, sharp piece of stone flies through the air, aiming right for-

"GUARDIAN SIGN!" I shout, causing the lingering stardust that's filtering through the wreckage to form a shield just in time to save her life. As the stone shatters against my shield of light, the girl ducks down and shrieks.
"N- no!" she cries. "I knew it, it's HIM!"
"Wha?" I glance at her. "Who the hell is 'him?'"

I personally hate dice, but there's been a lot of grief about changing the system in this last the last time I did it so I'm wary about doing it again. But if it gets enough support, I would be willing to switch over to the system that I use in False Dendrite.

There are roving bands of horrible insect people in the southern continent, if that's what you were wondering.

Nope. They're at the top of the known "legendary" weapon category. Not to say that there's nothing possible to be better, but yeah.
