You glare down at Lucius for a moment, before shaking your head.

No. You say the refusal simply, coldly, letting it escape your lips in an icy snarl that would've done Dildoes proud.

"...No?" To her credit, the Eversor doesn't smile or sneer at this, sparing you from a snide rebuttal - that small kindness also sparing her from feeling the butt of your Desert Eagle being smashed across her face in a brutal pistol-whip. "Didn't you hear me correctly, Warmaster Matsuda? I am offering you the Prophet, if only you'd meet me in honorable combat--"

No, you say again. You're not fighting her in an honor duel or a murder duel or whatever the hell she wants. You've already fought her once, you've already fought the duel that mattered - and you won. Even with her squad backing her up, EVEN with you having to worry about an entire stadium audience AND your client.

You're done with dueling, you growl at her. This isn't a fucking shonen anime. But more than that, you're done with Lucius and her demands. You're done meeting the people you're supposed to be killing on THEIR terms - it's time they met you at yours.
>>
>>35425406

It's here that Lucius' composed facade cracks a bit. Just a catch in her voice, nothing more. "...It seems your Warmaster is speaking madness. Sayaka, as Equerry, you should--"

"CHRIST, SHUT UP," Your Equerry all but roars right into Lucius' face, teeth bared in an almost bestial ferocity. "Wag that fucking tongue without being asked to again, and I'll rip it out myself! With my bare HANDS!"

Lucius sighs the sigh of the massively-bereaved. "I'm in the clutches of madwomen, apparently. ...Fine, fine." She adds when Sayaka moves towards her, glove-clad fingers curled into claws.

The blue-haired Eversor snorts here, before turning to you. "Well, Murderface? You're not gonna take her up on her challenge, so how do you want to do this?"

Before you could answer, it's hear that you see a ghost materialize in front of you. No, not a ghost - a manifestation. One that looks ragged and bloodied, like a corpse clawing its way out of its grave, thirsting for revenge. Its long black hair that formerly fell down her back in soft, luxurious waves now matted and ragged, its pristine costume scuffed and dirtied. Like it's been through a war. Maybe two.

And when it speaks, it speaks with your voice. Just colder. Smoother. More self-assured, despite the pain tainting words.

"Well. Apparently you're capable of listening to common sense and not let yourself get carried away by antiquated concepts like honor." Dildoes huffs. "You're slowly starting to impress me, Nameless One. Keep it up."

...What? Well, you're glad she approves, but...what's she doing out of your Desert Eagle? You didn't even know she could do that--

"You could stand to up your calorie intake, you know." She steps past you to glare down at the chained Eversor kneeling in front of you. "I'll only be able to manifest for a few minutes, no more. I suggest a hearty meal after this, unless you're that keen on wasting away." Dildoes turns towards you, before flipping her hair over her shoulder.

[1/2]
>>
>>35425414

O...kay? You frown at her, shaking your head. That still doesn't explain--

"I manifested because I just spent an hour trying to calm down your doomed future." Dildoes gestures to her ragged form. "She's now sleeping it off in her mirror, rendered somnolent thanks to the hesitant one's last-minute assistance." A smirk curls her lips. "I don't envy the headache she'll have once she wakes up, however."

She turns back to Lucius, frowning. "But never mind that. I'm here because I needed to tell you something, Nameless One. Something that you need to listen to."

You follow her line of sight, looking down at the chained Eversor kneeling at your feet.

You're listening, you say finally.

"Good." Dildoes nods. "Your cursed form was visibly incensed because of something she recently remembered about the green-haired one standing vigil outside. From what I can make out, it seems that it involves tearing the truth from someone's mind through psychic sense." She points towards Lucius. "Whether the green-haired one is truly the sinner that has your doom baying for her blood doesn't matter - what matters is that she can do it at all. Use her to get whatever truth you need to kill this Prophet."

...That's...well, that's not a bad idea, but--

"You fight like a brawler and kill like a murderer," She turns towards you again, her eyes of faded lilac sharp as flint. "A beastly way of going about things, but direct. Honest. Pragmatic. These are qualities that have gotten us up to this point, unbroken and unslain. Don't let petty concepts like honor cloud your judgment." She lets out a sigh. "Honor has killed millions of people - and never in my life have I seen it save a single one."

And just like that, she vanishes, like mist breaking apart in the wind. Leaving you once more alone with your prisoner and your Equerry.

[2/3]
>>
>>35425425

"Murderface?" Sayaka repeats, her voice oddly distant, yet growing clearer with every word. "You okay? I asked--"

You hold up a hand. You know what she asked. She doesn't need to repeat it.

Lucius finally allows a smirk to come through. "Madwomen with visions. Now that's worse."

How do you get the truth out of Lucius?

[X]Follow Dildoes' suggestion. Get Yuma in here, have her earn her pay.

This will MASSIVELY piss of the Murderface-incarnation. And possibly traumatise Yuma to boot. Though if we forgive her for her role in mindraping Girl A, that will probably help (but at the cost of pissing Murderface even more).

Still, dunno what else we can really do? I doubt Lucius would break from basic torture. So unless someone has another idea?
>>
>>35425436
I can't decide, Blessed lady help me.
>>
>>35425492

Not basic torture. Chiaki was previously described as a gifted torturer that had impressed Kharn. She gave us her old torture knives as a gift too. I'm sure Chiaki can pull it off.

This is up there with the worst things we could do for Yuma's mental health.
But when the voices in our head tell us to do something we should totally listen to them.
>>
Another issue is that this might also be the point where we could get the bonus from Dildoes (the way we did from Braids) for listening to her.

Then again, if we actually succeeded in torturing the info out, she would probably be equally impressed. She seems to care lots more about results afterall.

No, but she saw us act as though we were listening to someone who was not there.

Had Dildoes actually appeared fully visible to everyone, the reaction would probably have been more like "JESUS WHO THE FUCK IS THAT!". And not just from Lucius.

Sayaka probably figured out we were talking to the spirit in the DEagle, since she knows about Kirika and the others. I wonder if she will ask who is inside the gun.

I remember when were thinking about interrogating Midori 2 years back, some Mengele's among us were thinking that since the Soulgems suppress the pain your body actually feels through magic so your body can fight effectively. you would need to attack the Soulgem without harming it to truly make a Magical Girl feel pain.

Submersing it in boiling water for example, acid or potassium carbonate or anything alkaline for that matter.

All the pain without the physical harm.
>>
>>35425663
The fourth is Chiaki. They're speaking in terms of when she'll be dead and the four of them will guide Midori. or Kumatora.
>>

>>
>>35425637
Lucius probably knows how it looks because she is very close to Oriko.
>>
>>35425681
Unlikely. When they first met, Dildoes specifically referred to the fourth mirror as a separate incarnation distinct from Chiaki.

While its possible this was a deception from Dildoes, its more likely that this is the winged fragment from the barrier. Time will tell I suppose.

Well... This is just a theory, but... Dildos represents the Homura's, right? As in a hivemind of operator Homura's (maybe a specific one?) while Murderface represents corrupted Chiakis, and Braids represents the Moemuras (but not canon Moemura because she was a version that fell in love with Sayaka)

A reference was made to a version of Homura/Chiaki that killed herself, so maybe the last mirror is for those? The ones that killed themselves?

Alternatively, the last mirror could be for RibbonHomus (too close to Dildos, imo) or for Homucifer

You turn to Sayaka, before jerk your head towards the room's exit. "Get Yuma in here." You say this in the voice that Vintage had taught you to speak, just before she left. The Warmaster's voice. A voice of command, one brooking no argument.

Your Equerry blinks at this, her brow furrowing in puzzlement. "Yuma? But the Silent Room's holding and focused on her, we don't need a Culexus in here--"

The rest of her sentence dies in her throat as you stare directly at her in cold silence. Your face carefully impassive, expressionless, blank. Letting your own stare do the talking for you.

"...Understood, Warmaster." Sayaka rises to her feet from where she'd crouched beside Lucius and salutes you, before letting herself out of the Silent Room. The heavy automated locks on the doors clicking with an almost animalistic frenzy as they hurry to unlock, hastened by your Equerry's own impatience.

"Choosing brutish, uncivilized torture over an honorable and elegant duel, Warmaster Matsuda?" Your prisoner says the moment the first door closes behind the blue-haired Eversor. The blonde neering up at you, her eyes flashing with contempt.

"It was a mistake of me to think that you had even a single iota of honor." She shakes her head, her mane of tangled, matted blonde strands cascading in filthy waves at the movement. "Fine. Use any weapon or employ any torturer - it matters little. You will not get what you want, even if you pull me apart down to my bones. I will never break--"

"Who said anything about torture?" You cut Lucius off, silencing her with the same stare you used on Sayaka mere moments ago.

"No one said anything about torture. I'm just bringing in someone who'll ask you my questions for me."

Lucius frowns, confusion etched on her face, and as she opens her mouth to speak does the door to the Silent Room open again, allowing your Equerry in. Yuma, your Culexus Rank Leader, follows behind her - the green-cat lunchbox still clasped tightly to her chest by her gloved hands.

"Here she is," Sayaka announces, throwing her cape over one shoulder in a visible attempt to stop herself from recoiling upon entering the Silent Room again. She turns towards Yuma with her usual disdainful scowl. "Murderface wanted you here, like I said. Stop calling me a liar."

"...Yes, but..." Yuma turns her helmeted head towards you. "Warmaster, I don't...I've never really performed an actual excoriation before--"

It's here that Lucius laughs. "A Culexus, Matsuda? You want to corrupt one of your Soulbound to do your own dirty work for you? How pitiful! Pick up the knife yourself!"

The prisoner starts laughing, cackling even. Sayaka growls out an expletive and moves to break Lucius' jaw - but you stop her just in time by grabbing onto her cape and pulling her back. Very nearly strangling her.

"FUCK! GOD DAMMIT, MURDERFACE, THAT HURT!"

You let go of the sputtering, hacking Eversor before turning back to Yuma. You've...traded blows with her before, and you've trusted her with your life before as well. But never had she looked her age more than now - even with the Anima Speculum hiding her face.

You shake your head, and explain to Yuma that you didn't bring her in here to torture Lucius.

No, you brought her here so she could - at your order - rip out some information from the Eversor's skull.

Yuma is silent and utterly motionless at that. When she finally speaks a few moments later, her voice is...well, there's no other word for it: fearful. Like someone afflicted with a crippling, debilitating fear being forced to relive their worst nightmares.

[2/3]
>>
>>35425994

You've got experience in that too, at least.

"Warmaster, I..." The vox-speakers of her helmet give a sick crackle of a noise, as they rob her voice of every emotion except for the one that made her stutter. "I don't know how to do that..."

+ She's lying. + Dildoes' weakened voice brushes against your ears. + I can taste it on my tongue, Nameless One. It's the taste of a liar. +

I would assume Chiaki has a decent idea. Murderface suddenly goes berserk on Yuma and says she now remembers, and then Dildoes appears later and says Yuma can do this.

Since Murderface basically is Chiakis alternate incarnation, its pretty clear. Perhaps Chiaki has not realised it yet in all the excitement, but she is not stupid enough not to put the pieces together. Though ofcourse she knows none of the details.

"Yeah, I'm getting to that." Sayaka says after a while. "Anyway, there's only room for three people in a Silent Room, and that's counting the prisoner inside. If we're going to start this interrogation, you have to pick who you're bringing in along with you."

That's true, two threads ago we had to choose between bringing Yuma or Sayaka because the room wouldn't fit them both in.
And now they are both waltzing around in here.

You shake your head. "You do," you tell the Culexus standing in front of you, your own reflection glaring at you from her Anima Speculum's glossy visor. "You've done it once before, haven't you?"

The packed lunch drops from Yuma's gloved hands and falls to the metal-grilled floor with a sharp crack of a noise. The lid popping off and spilling the meticulously-prepared food across the grimy, rusting plates in a depressing heap of wasted sustenance.

Among the white grains of carefully-steamed rice, you could make out Kyoko's own clumsy, yet meticulous work: vienna sausages cut into dismembered, one-eyed octopuses. A boiled egg, once pressed into the shape of a grinning cartoony cat with seaweed eyes, now bleeding powdery yolk from its half-pulped face.

"N-no...I..." Yuma takes a step back - the cramped Silent Room immediately arresting her movement, her back thumping against the wall. "I...I just...I had to--"

"FOR FUCK'S SAKE, YUMA!" Sayaka roars, rushing forward in an attempt to rescue the lunch - before cursing again as she realizes that the food's all but wasted. She stands up, the now-empty lunchbox in her hands "Kyoko woke up early today just to make you this, you fucking IDIOT! Why didn't you stick it in your fucking inventory?!"

Yuma's reply is something akin to a harsh grinding noise, like a tank changing gears. ...No, she's crying. Your Culexus is crying inside her helmet, a child's guilty, burbling sobbing with half-mumbled apologies and explanations. The vox speakers twisting all of it into near-indecipherable mechanical growls.

"What? Are you crying?" Sayaka blinks, concern briefly flashing across her features before the usual mask of barely-kept rage slides back on. "Jesus Christ, your Warmaster is waiting. You already spilled your fucking lunch all over the fucking floor, you could at least spare us the embarrassment and do what she wants--"

[1/2]
>>
>>35427076

You hold up your hand again, silencing Sayaka. Your Equerry makes to spit something at you, something probably harsh and something she'd probably regret later - but one look from you is enough to convince her to check herself.

"...Right. I'll be outside the inner door. This room's only built for three anyway, and it's getting fucking cramped already." The blue-haired Eversor stalks off, the character lunchbox gripped tightly with both hands. "You just shout if you need anything." She growls as she pushes past you, and you acknowledge it with a nod.

Once you're left alone with your Culexus Rank Leader - and the prisoner, of course, Lucius watching the both of you in curious, yet wary silence - it's here that Yuma tries to speak again, through her sobbing. "W-Warmaster, I just...what I did back then--"

You shake your head. You don't care about what she did. Not now, at least.

All you need is for her to do it again. To Lucius. To get the information you need out of the Eversor's mind in any way possible.

Finding Oriko - finding the Prophet - is your top priority right now. To prevent any more people - Magical Girls or otherwise - from dying to her brazen terrorist attacks.

It takes Yuma a few more moments of muffled, gurgling crying before she starts to move. Stepping forward, in front of Lucius, a gloved hand stretched out towards the Eversor's face but not touching it. Lucius bares her teeth at this, turning away from the offered hand.

"Get away from me, Soulbound," The ragged, chained blonde snarls. "Get out of my head--"

+ The information you need is...warded, Warmaster. + Yuma's voice suddenly whispers in your mind, free of the vox-corruption that usually twisted her words into something blood-curdling. +...Warded by something I've never seen or encountered before. I...I may be able to force it out of her, but I don't know what it'll do to her psyche. + A pause of hesitation. + The attempt alone could irrevocably damage her. +

[2/3]
>>
>>35427101
>The information you need is...warded,
I half-expected this.
Oriko has a Culexus on-staff, one who knows all the dirty tricks that the Culexus never tell anyone else.
Putting vital information behind psychic firewalls to prevent just this kind of thing is obvious.
>>
>>35427101

Can it kill her? You pulse back, as best you could. Riding the connection she made with you.

Yuma shakes her head. + No, but...it might cause her to Witch Out. I would...recommend destroying her Soul Gem before then. +

"I can hear you," Lucius seethes. "I can't...make out the words, but I know what you're planning." She glares up at you through her stringy mop of sweat-matted hair. "Matsuda, I name you coward and murderer. You'll resort to something like this just to get what you want? Instead of settling it in an honorable clash of blades and souls?"

She spits at you, a glob of saliva splattering against your cheek. "You're no better than the freak you replaced. But at least SHE knew honor."

Your Culexus glances down at your prisoner. + Warmaster, if...if I do this, there's no going back. ...For me or her. +

You're not sure if it's just the peculiarities of words being pulsed between minds, but you detect a note of...resignation in the Culexus' voice.

How do you react?

>>
>>35427302
For the original mindrape the blame is on Yuma ofcourse.

But if we order her to do it here and now as her superiour, then WE take the blame for anything that happens.

And we also lose any moral ground for condemning her mindrape on ethical grounds, if we are willing to use it ourself when it benefits us, so forgiveness makes sense (or we become a hypocrite).

Last chance, you growl at Lucius. You're giving her one last chance to cooperate before you have Yuma rip her secrets out from her skull. And from what your Culexus has told you, it's going to be a very painful and traumatic process. Something that the Eversor won't be able to walk away from.

"Of course it's going to be," Lucius laughs harshly, the ragged edge of desperation in her voice. "I told you. The truth in my mind is warded by the Prophet. I can only give it willingly. It cannot be forced from me." She bares her teeth in a savage grin, all elegance and grace gone. "But fine. Fine. I'll cooperate, Matsuda. I'll cooperate all you like."

Then--

"After my one last swordfight."

You glare down at Lucius with narrowed eyes, and she meets your gaze with a maddening one of her own.

There's really no fucking helping people sometimes, is there?

"Warmaster?" Yuma gets your attention in a vox-corrupted snarl. But instead of her words being obscured by her choking sobs, then turned nearly unintelligible by her helm speakers, her voice is...clear. Her tone somehow sounding more like straight-backed acceptance, rather than weak-kneed resignation.

"Don't...worry about me. I'll do my best." She nods. "I only wish to serve - and I don't want these psychopaths from killing more people than they already have, too." The Culexus turns to look at Lucius, her skulled helm leering down at the Eversor.

How do you respond?

TELL ME ABOUT YUMA. WHY DOES SHE DO EVERYTHING WRONG
>>
>>35428139
Most likely. We first basically told her "yeah, I remember when you mindraped me!". Then we order her to do it again, to Lucius.

Then we actually state how horrible it was to intimidate Lucius, but since we experienced it, Yuma would have every reason to believe we are talking from experience, and feel even more horrified/disgusted.

Yuma is going to go nuts. We will lose our last culexus and Kyoko will possibly hate us forever.

All in all, this will end badly, which is why there were so many "do you REALLY wan't to do this" votes.

Ohwell. tg did nothing wrong.

If this was truly a really really bad idea, then Dildoes wouldn't have come out and expressly told us to do it.

The "Are you sure you want to do that?" posts from Decu aren't to warn us, they're just there because people voted for the optional dialogue instead of going forward with the plot. But now people are getting all worked up and paranoid because that's what players do when confronted with no easy way out.

As yuma mentioned, lucius is likely to witch out with this procedure done to her. Since yuma survived brain draining girl a, the procedure shouldnt normally be fatal to yuma except unless she will be attempting to suppress lucius' witching out in order to draw out more info.

On this assumption, i think that if presented with a choice for more intel against risking yuma, i'd suggest erring on the side of caution and reducing the risk against yuma.

we really just need a location at the bare minimum for the attack. Anything else is icing.

You nod at Yuma. You don't need to pulse it or voice it - she knows what you want her to do.

She returns the nod, before crouching down to Lucius' level. Stretching out her gloved hand again, and this time touching her palm to the struggling Eversor's forehead. The moment that Yuma's palm makes contact is when Lucius screams - loud, long, and cursing not only the Culexus but you.

"I'LL KILL YOU! COWARD! MURDERER! TRAITOR! HERETIC!" The chains lashing her to the floor and wall begin to creak and crash and strain as the Eversor seems to pull on whatever reserves of strength she has left to try and escape. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I AM LUCIUS THE ETERNAL, I DESERVE MY LAST SWORDFIGHT, I'M--"

"...Sorry." Yuma murmurs a single, regretful apology, one that makes Lucius freeze in place in sudden, frightful confusion - before she screams again.

No words this time - just pain. Indescribable, immeasurable pain.

Pain. And suffering.

+ I did this to you + Yuma's voice suddenly echoes in your mind as you watch her earn her paycheck, Lucius's Soul Gem in one hand and your Desert Eagle in the other. Ready to kill the Eversor the moment you saw her about to turn.

+ I did this to you because I needed to know. I did this to you because I had to know before I died +

The scent of burning flesh catches your attention, and you whirl around to find its source. A split-second is all it takes before you realize that the pork-like stench - and the resultant smoke - is coming from Yuma herself. Wispy black trails curling away from the gaps and seams of her Culexus hardsuit, under her helmet, from that tiny repaired crack in her visor that you yourself made during a certain disagreement.

Wait. Wait, what's happening? Why is she--

You move forward, reaching for the Culexus, to break the contact - but an invisible wall of force slams you back. Giving you a brief taste of the searing heat radiating from the pair.

[1/2]
>>
>>35429757

Still kneeling, still screaming, you also see crimson flame gout from Lucius' blank eyes, from her agape mouth, cooking her from the inside. At the very same time that Yuma's arm - the one whose hand is pressed tightly against Lucius' face - bursts aflame. The reek of burning leather joining the miasma of choking odors in the closed, confined room.

+ It's the ward the failsafe please stay away I'm almost through +

"Murderface? MURDERFACE!" Sayaka's voice comes from behind the inner door of the Silent Room. "What the fuck's going in there?! Readings are saying that it's hotter than a fucking volcano where Lucius is! I--"

You roar at her to get medical staff right here, on the double. Sayaka curses before running off, her footsteps quick and urgent.

+ I did this to you because I wanted to make sure Miss Malal was doing the right thing +

+ That's what I keep telling myself +

+ I didn't mean to hurt anyone +

+ All I ever wanted was the truth +

Another moment, and this time Yuma joins the prisoner in the screaming - but instead of merely pain, hers is trebled with effort. With will. With resolve.

And with her screams comes a torrent of emotion, pulsed directly into your mind. Regret. Sorrow. Anger. Hate. But most of all - guilt. Guilt in spades, in a drowning flood. Making you choke back sobs of your own as your dying Culexus' words fill your mind in a desperate, hurried torrent.

+I'msorryI'msorryi'msorryi'msorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorryimsorry+

The climax arrives just as their twinned screams reach their crescendo - with Lucius completely and utterly bursting into shrieking, searing crimson flame.

Dropping your Desert Eagle - letting the Golden Weapon drop to the floor with a heavy thunk - you lunge forward and grab the burning Culexus from Lucius' killing embrace, gritting your teeth against the pain of grabbing melting leather with your bare hands.

+TAKE IT OFF PLEASE MY HELMET I CAN'T BREATHE+

You growl something about noisy Culexus as you drag Yuma away from the still-burning, still-chained Eversor - and the moment you're clear is the moment you pull at the pressure seals underneath her helmet. They come away with reluctant hisses, and you fumble with your own burned, blistered fingers to remove the Anima Speculum. Bracing yourself for the wave of nausea that would undoubtedly come.

You drag the helmet clear, and see just what had happened to your Culexus. What she had done to herself in your service.

The...fire, whatever it was, had burned away the lower half of her face. Her teeth bared at you in a blackened, lipless grin, the flesh almost charred to nothing except for those closest to the bone itself. A grisly imitation of the humorless skull painted on all Anima Speculum helmets.

Jesus Christ. That's...that's what the ward was? A mental ward against interrogation did THIS?

You dimly hear Sayaka screaming your name - and Yuma's - as the door to the Silent Room throws back open again, this time with the medical staff you asked for. One of them, anyway - someone with long dark hair, a white lab coat, and a professional if worried smile. One that seemed to freeze at the sight of you, rather than the half-cooked Culexus or the still-cooking Eversor. She called herself the current Apothecary Primus, Touno Asai.

[3/4]
>>
>>35429800

You nod at her, dimly, before looking back down at Yuma. Despite her gruesome injuries, the upper half of the Culexus' face is intact - including her eyes. She looks at you with startlingly clear crimson ones, and despite the pain in them, they convey all you need to know, which is then confirmed by a pulsed thought, weak but triumphant. Wounded but victorious.

+ I KNOW WHERE ORIKO IS +

You nod again, before smashing Lucius' darkening Soul Gem into the floor with your burnt fist.

Magical Scribe Eleanor Slam versus The New Grind

Today I learned something crucial. It’s that, if you’ve overslept from exhaustion due to overexertion, the solution is to come in late and accept your boss grilling you on whether or not you’re really you, as opposed to somebody posing as you. I can understand Jael’s paranoia about… Everything, as I’m still convinced the other shoe is going to drop one of these days, but come on. It’s a fucking general store. The worst thing you have to worry about is shoplifters.

Well, I didn’t do that. I did what I was not supposed to do : I tried to parkour my way to job. Don’t do that, unless you’re sure your legs can stop shaking long enough to clear the distance between the rooftops. Because otherwise you’re going to get yourself hurt. I blame Fuckface for that stupid idea. That was the kind of thing she’d do, and her retarded influence must have rubbed off on me.

…God, my limbs feel like pain-filled jelly. ”Light workout” my ass. How can they call it that with a straight face? One hundred push-ups, one hundred sit-ups, one-hundred squats, and ten kilometers of running is not a light workout unless you’re a freak. And they want me to do at least that much every single fucking day?

Fuck. I’m still hurting in places I didn’t know I had.

Well, it’s a few minutes before I need to clock in. At least I’ve gotten here early enough to patch myself up and catch my breath. Other than the tortuous workout routine, Kai gave me a first aid kit and a portable barbecue pit, saying that everyone in the Sixth gets those. No fucking idea how to use the latter. So right now I’m just washing the blood off my elbows and applying the disinfectant – ow ow ow, that stings like a motherfucker – so I can put on the bandages. Maybe pop some analgesics.

…They have little cartoon cat faces on the bandages. Is this somebody’s idea of a joke?

… Hehe. They’re smiling kitties. Cute.

Is Yuma gonna make it?
>>
>>35429824
Huh. That actually went a lot better than I thought it would. Yuma actually lived.

Those injuries suck, but if entire limbs can be regrown, then those can too. Yuma sees stable despite what happened, and not about to witch out.

I also figure this should be viewed as sufficient punishment by even most Yuma haters.

We can have Chiaki forgive Yuma next turn, which should let her go of her guilt and then go hunt Oriko.

Oh, don't forget the painkillers. You're supposed to smile for customers, Eleanor, not wince at them. Hope I get the dosage right - it's usually two pills, isn't it?

With my injuries wrapped up, I can slip on the black and orange apron that passes for a uniform. Or struggle a bit with it - damn this bulky- there it goes. There's a tag on the front with my name on it, or at least I hope it's my name and I didn't grab someone else's by mistake. That was really embarrassing...

At least signing in doesn't mean actually signing in. It means swiping a card into a slot and hoping that whatever's flashing on the nearby screen indicates success. And I haven't forgotten mine yet - rather proud of that, to be honest.

The little beeping sound it's making probably indicates success, so yay!

And the painkillers have reduced my aches to a dull throb, which means I probably only have to worry about headaches now. Also yay!

...Though there doesn't seem to be anybody else here yet. I'm not early, I don't think - analog watch says I'm on time - so what happened? A flu breakout or something like that?

...Now I'm getting myself worried about people whose names I don't even know. Hope they're all okay, anyway. If nothing else, I don't want to deal with customers all by myself. I don't think I can safely operate a cash register.

But it's better than paperwork, so I'm okay with it. And I get to actually help people! People that aren't batshit insane!

Well, they usually aren't. They can be rowdy sometimes, but they kind of shut up and apologize after a while when I ask them to stop, which is better than things normally are when I ask people to stop doing things.

...Point is things are better. Yeah, definitely better. They could be better than better, but they're not horrible. It's the difference between getting your cheek pinched and being set on fire. A minor annoyance versus something that makes you wish you were dead already. So that's good, right?

Push the cart this way, push the cart that way. Stack this, stack that. Stack things on shelves, stack things in displays, stack things on top of each other, being helpful hmm hmm hmm~. It'd be nice if I could read the labels, but I think I've gotten pretty good at this in spite of everything.

Oh, and the other people working here made it here okay. That's quite a relief, because I don't think I can run this place on my own! I can't even ring things up without triggering a trance - god that was embarrassing, and scary. Thought I was going to be kicked out for that!

I should learn their names at some point; I only know Jael's so far.

And now my favorite part : putting stuff up in the candy aisle. Colorful packages dot the shelves as I push the cart full of merchandise down the aisle. There's a lingering smell of chocolate and sugar, despite everything being packaged in boxes or wrapping. Maybe somebody vandalized the displays? I know I did that a few times when I was little, until I got caught. I may need to check for that. Hopefully I can get it done fast enough that I'm not accused of lingering. That, too, makes Jael suspicious.

I still don't recognize half the things here, but maybe it's just different packaging rather than different names. Or it's just been a really long time since I've seen American confections. Starting to get a bit nostalgic and homesick here...

Hey, stop that, Eleanor. You're not thinking about that right now, no way. This is a happy place. Stay positive and stop frowning, or customers are going to complain. Just put the stuff where it goes and match colors with like colors.

Speaking of customers, I'm hearing the squeaking of sneakers coming closer, but slightly off-rhythm. Sounds like someone's unsure on their feet. I turn towards the source and beam, giving my best enthusiastic greeting while still continuing to put things where I think they belong. "Hello, Marina!" I exclaim, "can I help you with anything today?"

She's a frequent shopper from what I've seen. Really nice lady, even if she is a little off. I don't think she's slow, so much as... Dreamy?

I keep my eyes trained on her while waiting for her to respond. I've found it takes her a few seconds to notice you. There's a little clinking sound from her fiddling with her necklace, which she does when she's spacing out.

Finally she turns toward me, side ponytail swaying a bit, and smiles. "...Good morning, Eleanor," Marina replies. As per usual, she sounds relaxed. Maybe a little sleepy. "I was just picking up some more chocolates. Are any of them on sale?"

"Yes, actually!" I say excitedly, beaming as I lead her toward a brightly colored display. Hee, she must've missed it earlier. "We got these new ones in that are going at two for a dollar!"

Marina picks up one of the boxes I indicated and scrutinizes it slowly and lazily. "...How do they taste?" she inquires.

"I haven't had the chance to try them yet," I answer honestly. "I was considering picking up a couple boxes for myself if people came back to buy more." Which is probably not something you want to say to a customer, but I'm not good at lying about this stuff.

She considers this and tugs at her necklace again - oh, those are shark teeth, aren't they? Neat! Then she... opens one of the boxes and pops one of the candies in her mouth.

I try to say something, but before I do, Marina looks back at me and murmurs, "Say 'aah'."

"Eh-?"

I didn't know she could move that fast. She shoves one of the wafers in my mouth before I even finished talking. I can taste a little bit of-

Fudge and coconut sprinkles! Yum!

Then she picks up a few more boxes. "You've convinced me," she says, which, along with swallowing the tasty snack, makes my cheeks flush with pride. It makes everything hurt less for a little bit.

Marina smiles back at me before leaving, and I wave goodbye before I resume sorting things. I'm definitely getting a few boxes of those later.

Really wish I had a more normal-looking arm here. People just keep staring at it, and it’s making me real uncomfortable. I… I hope I’m not driving people away by being here. It doesn’t look like business is slowing down, but maybe it’s just been this way ever since I came in.

No no no, snap out of it, Eleanor. Fuck. You’re better than this, don’t let it get to you. Just… Find something to do. You only have an hour until your shift is up. Then you have lunch, and then the training starts again.

I’m so absorbed in my thoughts that I nearly bump into somebody. I make to apologize, but-

“…Marina?” Sure enough, it’s her, pushing around a cart full of those items from the promotional display.

Marina slowly turns to look at me with a sleepy smile. “…Oh, it’s you. Hello again, Eleanor.”

“Um, hi,” I murmur, then cough before I speak up. “You need help with anything?”

She shakes her head at me, making her necklace clink on its own. “Oh, no, thank you,” she assures me, “I’m back to purchase more of those chocolates.”

I just kind of stare at her blankly, and then glance at her cart. Then I turn to look at the display, which is now empty. Then back to the cart, where several of the boxes appear to be empty. And finally back to her. "Marina?” I venture, “Have you been standing around the store all morning buying chocolate?"

She nods, and actually seems a tiny bit bashful when she tells me why: "...I kept running out..."

…I shouldn’t laugh. I’d probably do the same if given the chance. But still, her comment had me in stitches. I’m bent double, gasping for breath as I try to stifle my laughter. Marina’s giving me a bemused look, which makes me laugh even harder.

I at least –try- to be professional. “Don’t…” I snort, “Don’t forget to – hee hee - pay for those, okay?”

“Of course…” Marina answers, pushing her cart along towards the register. “Have a nice day, Eleanor.”

I remove a hand from my mouth to give a shaky wave to her.

Okay… Okay… The thing to do now is… Is stop laughing. Stop laughing, and restock the display. Yeah.

I push my empty cart through the double doors at the back of the store and enter the warehouse in back. Well, not quite. There's big crossroads where the path splits to the left and to the right, and the one on the right is for the big stuff. Like the bouncy castles. The normal store stock is on the left, so that's where I go. Not sure what's straight ahead, other than more double doors, but somebody needs to clean that hall up. It's scuffed up real badly.

They probably keep kangaroos or something back there. I dunno. Not my problem. It gives me the creeps, anyway.

Nnnng... Why do they have to label everything back here? You're killing me here. At least I know where the things I'm looking for are at, though. Stuff that's new and on sale goes near the front of the warehouse! So it's right over... There! I carefully load three dozen boxes into the cart and head on back the way I came.

...Hee... I really shouldn't do this, but...

Putting my right foot on the little shelf on the bottom, I grab the handle and dangle myself off. Then I just kick off the ground with my left foot and ZOOM! The cart rattles loudly as I propel it forward, kicking the ground harder and faster and making a sharp turn at the intersection. Man, it's been too long since I've done this!

I think I've heard people call them trolleys before, and trolleys are something you ride on, right? So now that I've built up speed, I stand up on the basket and just ride it out the doors. I must be quite a sight, like something out of a bad commercial, but I really don't care right now. I've got a clean record, so even if I get in trouble it's only a first strike. I can get away with this much, right?

...Eh, maybe I shouldn't push my luck.

Omake : We Can Rebuild Her

"Why'd you have to go and put her head back?"

"It would be difficult for her to walk with her head stitched to her foot."

"Yeah, but that'd be funny!"

"It would also give away our involvement in the matter."

"Yyyyyeeeaaahhhh... But it'd totally be worth it!"

"I doubt that."

"Aw, barnacles, Jade, why're you taking her side lately?"

"I am doing no such thing."

"Yeah you are! You're even giving blood to her!"

"To accelerate her recovery. She needs to return to meditation by tonight, not sit as a corpse for a week."

"Well why can't she? It'll keep her quiet."

"If anything, you're the one acting strangely. I thought you liked her?"

"I'm just being friendly~."

"You found someone who is supposed to be indestructible, and didn't care if they died. Was somebody who could withstand an extraordinary amount of punishment not what you wanted?"

"Ehhhh, right now I'm trying to knock her off her high horses. I mean, her attitude just... Wow. I mean, geez, she even makes ME a little mad."

"Even so, Miss Cooldown made a request."

"Wellllll, Wendles said to 'watch her', and we watched her get blown to pieces, so we're doing great on that front!"

"That is almost certainly not what she meant."

"You know how Callidus aaare."

"...I suggest a different tactic."

"No."

"Awww."

"You'll like it."

"I doubt iiit. But anywaaay, what boring, non-explodey idea do you have?"

"The outfit Miss Crunch came in was severely damaged and will need to be remade so as not to arouse suspicion."

"That's easy and not fuuun!"

"Furthermore, Miss Crunch has indicated that other than the negligee, she has no other clothes."

"...Ohhh."

Human Resources 1: Peter Rabbit

Harumi Ryouno, of the Third. Incubator's aide. Civilian.

I'd tell people I work in communications, if I hadn't pretty much blown them all off when I faked my death. Pretty good trick, I thought. Nice funeral, I'm told. To the rest of the Officio? I work HR; yeah, yeah, I know. Coincidence is a funny thing. Honest answer? Practically the Devil's right hand. Hell, it pays the bills.

...Okay, that was pretty bad.

It's a friday night like any other, which means I've got absolutely nothing to do. That probably sounds nice; I don't have my eternal soul jammed into some pretty little rock, so I get to have weekends off like the rest of us mortals. Let me rephrase that: I've got nothing to do, no one to talk to and I'm bored out of my skull. I'd kick back and waste away in front of the TV, but I can't quite stomach going back to it. Call me sentimental, but I never could watch much ever since, well, you know. Not long before I started here.

Still stings a bit, I guess.

I looked over my options again. Knew them well enough, but sometimes you'll look again, just in case you were wrong the last twenty times. ...At least, I'm hoping that's not just me. Phone I use to call no one, TV I use to watch nothing at all, mattress I don't generally bother sleeping on, fridge I keep pretty near empty because I can't be bothered with cooking for myself. It's like I don't even live here. Then there's the stupid little netbook the rabbit told me I'll need; never got the hang of the thing, just something I had to bring to the Officio one day that spends every day just shy of breaking down completely.

...Heh. Guess that's part of my job, really. At least it's better behaved than your average gem-sporting teenager.

[1/???]
>>
There's a mirror too, just lying around. Handy little thing for when I need to look just right for the role I'm told to step into. This isn't one of those times. Instead, I see a tired-looking face staring out at me from the glass, brown eyes practically covered over by shaggy black hair. None of those crazy colours all the Officio kids seem to have. Never did figure out what the deal was that. Past the head, the picture in the mirror is just some lanky thing trailing across the floor behind me, wrapped up in a baggy, shapeless mess of green and grey cloth. ...It's warm and comfortable, don't judge me. Kinda nice, not having to care about this stuff.

Callidus. Might've been handy for what I do. Hah, like I'd ever take a contract.

So there's also a bottle. I'm not doing that tonight. Usually try not to. Jamming a bottle into my face late at night? Come on, that's drunkard talk unless you've got some company. Before I know it, I'm setting up a game of solitaire - always preferred it with real cards, somehow - and sweeping it right back into the box. I'll just call that one a win. Can hardly ever be bothered with actually playing.

It's funny, the things you realise now and then. Like the company you've got on a friday night, the sort of people you can expect to go to. Not the kids I work with, obviously. Bad for business, getting too attached to them. Never much cared for most of them anyway, crazy brats as far as the eye can see. Other than that... what? Lost everyone I needed to a while back, they all think I kicked the bucket.

So I look down, and I start dialing a number.

[2/???]
>>
Gotta have some friends you can count on, you know? I don't have that, but I've got the next best thing. ...Maybe not the next. Definitely not the best. It's a thing, I can say that much. Any port in a storm, or something along those lines. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have anything to do at this hour, but he lets it ring three times first anyway. Warms my heart when he does that, I tell you; taught him the trick myself. Makes people think you're just a little too important for them, but you'll do them a favour anyway.

Others get nine. Three sets of three, so we can pretend he cares about a silly little number. I just get three to show me he hasn't forgotten. The rabbit's got a good memory. Thick as molasses when it comes to some things, though. He's alright when you get to know... well, maybe not, but I kind of like...

Don't feel like lying when I'm not even on the clock, so let's just say I'm not that picky sometimes.

It's kind of funny, the way I recognise his voice on the line. I mean, it's not like I could get anyone else from this number, so that helps. I don't know anyone who can quite sound like no one at all the way he does, though, all the same. It's the most boring voice in the world. Told him that once, and he almost seemed proud. He wasn't, of course, knowing him.

"Sanbey." Same way he always answered, no sprucing it up with titles, not even 'Sanbey of the Third Officio Assassinorum' or anything. Asked him about it once; he said that showed pride, and he wouldn't go the way of his brothers.

"Hey, Rabbit. Got a minute?" See, that's the nice thing about knowing he doesn't care. Get to call him what you want without him getting annoyed. 'Names are immaterial and pointless', he used to say. Even 'Sanbey' was kind of a grudging pick. Seems to think it's a bad precedent, like it'll send him off down the same way his brothers went.

"...I suppose so. Some sort of emergency?" Yeah. Yeah, you could say that.

[4/???]

"Nah, just felt like talking." I mean, it's not like this is the first time I've bugged Sanbey. He's used to it, and he doesn't mi- well, I guess he doesn't care enough to be bothered by it. Perks of working for an emotionless space monster, or something like that.

So here I am. Little soul-sucking alien looking like a rabbit that woke up on the wrong side of Chernobyl, and it's what I have to chat with at one in the morning. Can't understand the first thing about this funny-looking monkey it puts up with, and it's the closest I've got to family. Of course I laughed, I felt too sick to do anything else.

"Ryouno?" So he heard.

"...Ah, it's nothing, boss."

"Very well, then. Now, as you are no doubt aware, there is scarcely any reason for me to-" Oh boy, this again. Did I mention he's about as fun as a spreadsheet? ...Maybe not the best comparison, I usually end up handling some of those every day.

"Listen, I've had a bad day," not strictly true, but it wasn't exactly cloud nine either. "And if you don't get out of your ivory tower, I'm just going to have to turn into some big weird-" Hadn't really seen any witches first hand - only in photos - so it's probably a good thing he stopped me there.

"If you recall, Ryouno, you refused the contract and run no such risk." And there's the problem with a boss who's only as dumb as a sack of bricks when the mood takes him. Inconvenient. Alright, so it was a pretty bad excuse, too; again, I keep the good stuff for when I'm on the clock. Only so much effort in me.

"Yeah, I was sort of hoping you wouldn't remember. You coming over or what? I can share a glass, carrot juice or whatever it is you take. I'll let you go by the time the sun's up. We'll pretend it's... I dunno, a business meeting or something. Officio talk."

"Somehow, I highly doubt that would be your intention."

"Well, lucky you, I don't have much to talk about besides work anyway."

A heavy sigh over the line. Might have thought he meant it, if I hadn't taught him that. Little bit of emoting will get you far, even if your fluffy little alien-devil heart isn't really in it. Still weirds me out how he sounds pretty much human, though. Should be something more like... I don't know, one of those little cartoon animals or something. Not right.

"If I must." Knew it. I can usually count on him for this, who even knows why. Guess we both make our fair share of bad decisions.

"I'll leave the cat flap unlo-"

"That won't be necessary."

- - -

Doorbell rings eventually, hell if I know how he does it. Still sitting on the ground when I find him. Little guy looks just like his brother at the Ninth, but with bright blue eyes. Never could decide if that's more or less creepy, but I don't like it much. Gotta have some flair, you know? Not some kind of palette swap. Keep telling him to spruce it up a bit, maybe a tiny hat or something, but he's having none of it. Would really help him stand out, though, you know? Play up the whole mascot thing.

Then I hear about the Eighth and count my blessings.

Scoop him up and drop him on the couch; of course he doesn't mind, apathy's a fun little thing.

"Come oooooon. Not even a little smile for your favourite lackey?" Got him to blink, at least. I'm going to pretend that means I surprised him. Got to keep him on his toes, or something like that. At least be wrong enough to confuse him.

"You know perfectly well that my facial expression is non-negotiable, Ryouno." Yeah, I noticed. Weird little critter.

"Beep boop."

"...What?" Twice in a row! I'm on a roll.

"Ah, nothing. What had you cooped up in the office all day, anyhow?" I know the answer, of course. Habit. Guy doesn't have anything else to do; kind of like me, but he doesn't bother pretending.

Gets him talking, though.

See, I like this, because Lucius wasn't a disposable mook, she was an established character. There was probably a way out of this that would have her live.

The Midori way is not for everyone. That actually makes it valuable.

"The Yumishita case," he tells me, and that's about all I need to hear. Crazy Vindicare went rogue a few weeks back, started camping out in witch barriers and shooting out the soul gems of the teams we send in. Ran off pretty much right after her training finished, too; don't know what's going on there, and Sanbey himself isn't telling me all that much. That or he really doesn't know much, wouldn't put it past him. Been digging into it whenever I get the time, though; having all those souls shot out is bad for business, you know? Gotta have her put down.

"I'll get back to to it tomorrow, then, after I've checked in on the others."

"Ryouno, I trust you are aware that tomorrow is a Saturday?"

"...Ah? Yeah, right. Forgot." Damn it, he wasn't supposed to call me on that. What am I supposed to do out here, huh? Gather dust harder? "Might as well hash out what we know, though. Not like we've got much else to do, right?"

- - -

"Hey, Peter." Mitakihara's looking nice, right about now. Cities are at their best when the sun goes down, pretty little light show off in the distance. Looked nicer a while back before some of the lights started going off, but this'll have to do. I notice I'm giving him my special three-glasses-in voice by now; good on him if he can make sense of whatever's crawling out of my mouth by now. I have to listen pretty hard to tell what I'm saying myself.

"Excuse me?" I guess I hadn't called him that before.

"Don't.... donlookatme like that, I just call rabbits what they are." That was a pretty stupid laugh. They probably all sound that way to him, though.

"That hardly seems necessary." Yeah, well, that's how you take every joke; you and most of the little soul-sucking cottonballs.

[6/???]
>>
"You don't get to talk about how 'names serve no purpose' and then complain about the one I give you." I give his big, floppy ears a little tug. That was pretty clever of me, I'd like to think. I think a lot of what I say is clever, right around this time of the night. "So hey, Peter."

"Yes?" Pretty sure he tried to sound a bit resigned, right around then. No, it wasn't that good. Yeah, I could stand to teach him better.

"'Bout when you said... when you said you'd set me up to get into acting if I still want to. Never thought you meant right away. Real quick-thinking of you, sending me right off like that, into the thick of it. Never saw it coming." Aw, he thinks I'm serious. At least, that might be what the little tilt of the head means. Jokes or no, I have to say, this is probably some real good practice. Real good. Get to wondering what I'll do once I've retired from this little stage, sometimes.

"Ryouno, that was hardly my inten-"

"Shhh. Only kidding. Just relax and- whoops, sorry about that." Ended up leaning a bit to the side, using the little guy like an armrest. Squashed him a bit and he never said a word, but on the other hand, I'm not actually sure he noticed even when Yumishita put an entire giant arrow through him before she ran off. Weird little thing didn't so much as flinch, just had some kind of... of backup. Started eating the body, too. Aliens, huh?

What'd she call it, again? 'Arbalest setting' or something. Funny, she never had anything against ME. I'm sort of flattered by that, almost, but mostly proud.

"Hey, Petey? You're alright, you know." Just sort of muttered in the couch's general direction, something he's free to catch if he likes.

[7/???]
>>
"Hmm?" Funny, the way we keep wasting our time together like this. I hate knowing this is what I've got, if I'm being honest, and he isn't exactly thrilled about hanging around with some human either. Thinks it's a bad sign, looking at all his brothers, and oh, does he ever harp on about how they went wrong. Not that he's annoyed, mind; always says he's above that. Pretty silly, really, but maybe I just don't get space rabbit things.

"Nah, only kidding," I tell him with the biggest grin I can manage. "You're a horr'ble little freak of nature. Don't you change, now." Turns out trying to high-five an incubator's ear when he has no idea what you're going for doesn't really work out. I would've known that, earlier today.

- - -

By the time I hear something again - or notice it, anyway - I'm out like a light, with my head on the armrest. Just about manage to pull myself up a bit and see across the room, even though it's spinning way more than I'd like. "I believe that marks sunrise, Ryouno. I will return to my office now." ...Think I might've mumbled something to him when he left. Didn't think he'd stick around, guess he figures nothing back at home's too urge-

Did I just call the office home? Weird.

Well, day's started now, nothing for it; I'll just turn in early or whatever. I shamble over to the frid- to the big cold cereal container - may as well call it what it is - and I end up laughing so hard I need to hold onto one of the wall beams to keep myself up. It's all a bit too ridiculous to do anything else.

The things we do with our time, huh? Unbelievable.

Dead Neptune - Chapter 02

Jessica jammed her fingers on the buttons headed for first floor and the one to close the elevator doors. A pair of chrome-finished walls slid into where the entrance once stood, and the steel box began falling at 50 kilometers an hour. She let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through her long, brown hair and checking the wristwatch on the other. Only ten seconds had passed and she found herself kicking the elevator door with a short thud, as if trying to make it fall faster. Dealing with stuck-up, arrogant business wasn’t exactly her cup of tea.

Finally, a pleasant ding announced the Warmaster’s descent and opened the doors of the elevator. The lobby was typical of a rich man’s atrium, with marble floors and Solomonic columns, and oak desks. Normally, she’d take the time to appreciate the luxury of the room, but she was already gone, staying clear away from the confused faces of suits flipping through binders staring at a girl wearing a skirt and a coat.

Pushing through the revolving glass doors, Jessica checked her wristwatch again. Half an hour until her next assignment. A silver coupe pulled up in front of her, and she seated herself in shotgun as the car pulled away into the streets of Hong Kong.

“How’d it go?” Alice took a right at the first light and stopped at the next.

“It… I managed to get what I needed,” Jessica took out her phone and began typing out a message. “Head over to the Phooey. We have that cash grab to do.”

No one really knew who had come up with that nickname, though it was rumored to have been from some old cartoon show. It was just one of those things that stuck on and no one argued. Despite its innocent reference, the Phooey was home to the city’s most notorious gangsters, a place where the right words could get you anything you wanted, provided the price was right. Even the triads had a strong presence there, just because of the city’s status.

And that's all from me! Thanks go out to Deculture for inviting me, as well as proofreading this. Likewise to Archival, Minty, Sanguis, Yuki and many others for looking this over and helping out with the final product.

For anyone who's unclear on where Human Resources fall timeline-wise (since I didn't get a chance to specify yet), this happens while Ahriman is still Vindicare rank leader.

These magical girls weren’t interested in economics, however. Supply and demand, shipping and logistics, none of that mattered too much. Maybe there’d be another time when it would matter, another time when they’d have to attend to things like that. For now, however, the only thing that mattered was getting money. Enough money to support their way of life, what they did. They were pirates, after all. There wasn’t much else a pirate did. At least, that’s what all the girls thought. They were in it for the fun and the money.

The Mustang pulled across the road from a low, white house, one that’d look perfect for raising a small family, or perhaps perfect for hiding a bunch of weapons, drugs, money, or all three. The blinds were all drawn, and the paint was beginning to peel on the vinyl siding. Alice drew a utility shovel out of her hood and rested it on her shoulder, the same calm, tired look on her face.

Jessica was the first to reach the door. She firmly knocked on the door thrice as her right hand reached down to her skirt. The door opened a crack, a flimsy chain keeping it from opening too far. In that crack, a grumpy, angry looking face greeted them.

“Who the fuck are you?”

Thanks for reading! I should be contributing a writeup every thread now, with any luck.

Well, for a given value of 'contributing', anyway.

“Hi. We’re here to take your money and shit.”

“Huh? Get the fuck ou-“

Before the thug could finish his sentence, however, a knife found its way upward through his skull and the chain, blood soundlessly splattering onto Jessica’s clothes. She sighed and muttered a curse under her breath before swinging the door open, pushing the corpse out of the way.

Jessica pointed to a staircase on the right and nodded to Alice, who replied with a nod of her own before heading downwards. Stepping into the next room, she found herself standing before three men who sat at a table playing cards. Hearing her footsteps, they looked up and promptly got to their feet, each with a gun to aim at the intruder, but were subsequently put down with a knife in each of their throats, knocking over some of the poker chips and empty bottles of alcohol.

Halfway towards the next room, a goon with a submachine gun appeared in the doorway, firing with laughable accuracy from the hip. Jessica lunged forward, grabbing a knife from her thigh and knocked the barrel upwards, decorating the ceiling with holes. She then took a knife in her other hand and sliced into the poor goon’s jugular, leaking blood as soon as the blade sank into flesh.

She returned to the previous room and took a look around. It seemed as though there weren’t many people in here to begin with, or they were all downstairs. Jessica hoped for the former and a girl in a hoodie carrying a duffle bag and a few papers confirmed her suspicions.

“There were some drugs down there, too. You want me to grab them?”

Jessica paused for a moment, heading for the door. “Nah. Leave them. Let the next gang have them.”

They both stepped back outside, gently closing the door behind them. Alice pressed a button on her keychain and the trunk popped open, being opened farther before she threw the bag inside and slammed it shut. Both girls slid into the car again and the engine roared to life, headlights fading in the distance.

I just want to say, I really love everything to do with Yuma's whole character arc. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the whole sin/remorse/forgiveness theme, but I honestly feel that her flashback was one of the most compelling segments of writing in this quest, and the further developments to her story in this thread are a great continuation of that arc.

Ahh, it depends on the Officio's current size and turnaround rate. But a ballpark average figure would be monthly, with a quota of an entire squad (7 magical girls). That's besides the snap recruitments and trade contracts that Incubators are sometimes up to.
