Sheszka's howl drags on, a clear declaration of victory echoing across the brilliant sky.

You fidget a bit- You kinda wanna join in.

Temptation of the wild notwithstanding, you've got other problems. Namely, There's a giant limbless crab corpse sitting on a lake beach in the middle of a forest. And while you'd rate your appetite as 'Extensive', you don't believe you can eat what amounts to a small house.

So now, you have to figure out what to do. You absent-mindedly wipe your glaive clean, tucking it securely behind you as you start to concentrate. Sheszka's howl gradually dies out, but the excited look plastered over her face isn't going anywhere- She sidles next you, pride straightening her posture.

You offer her a smile.
"Good job, yes?"
Her tail is swinging so quickly it whips the air back and forth, practically whistling as it goes.
You can feel the slightest bit of weight behind you. Jin has neatly landed on your shell, standing tall as she surveys your destruction.

She folds her wings, feathers tucking against her sides as she speaks.
"It is a good view, yes?"
"Mmm. I am thinking it might be too big to carry, though."
She laughs, and you ponder your options.

>Jin can bring people here, right? Everyone could eat it out here.
>Maybe with some extra hands we could bring it back to town?
>Eat what you can, take what you can carry, leave the rest.

>>
>>35430103

She may be bigger than Mom, but Mom will still own her in training...
And that will teach Lyra how to prevent being flipped and how to cover her now enlarged blind-spots...

Though size magics would be very helpful to obtain...
>>
>>35430277
There is that. Really, unless we get house sized huge, Mom will still be able to whip us in combat. And even if we get truly fuckhueg (which I don't want) I'd still put even odds on Nia.

Comparing our growth rates based on total lifetime.

Mom: 30y ~ 10950days; 189lvls -> 0,1726 lvl/day
Lyra: 23days; 180lvls -> 7,826 lvl/day

Thats roughly 45 times faster than Mom. So, yeah. She lost this race the moment we were born.
>>
>>35430372
On the otherhand, our rapid evolution seems to have inspired her as well. Since she got 25 of those levels AFTER we were born. Where before it took her years to get even a couple based on the pastebin.
>>

I think training us and aria has been more of a workout for her than she lets on.

A frown creases your face, and refuses to leave.

There's really no way around it. The crab isn't leaving the clearing in one piece. Not like this, anyway.

Bastard probably walked above the trees. Or stayed underwater. Where do giant crabs even come from, anyway? Maybe they-

Nope. No time for that. You're on a schedule. A dungeon schedule.

"Jin."
"Yes?"
"Can you fly back to town? Let people know what we killed, yes? We will not be moving it without help."
She nods, spreading her wings as she prepares to launch.
"Yes. Yes! I will be back!"

The owl-harpy gives a short hop of your back, and throws herself off the crab, gliding a few meters before her wings start their work, carrying her over the trees and towards the village.
You settle down, dropping yourself next to your wolf, one hand idly working through her hair as your praise and reward her.

________________________________________________________________

You are now Jin.

You exult in the flight- not just the sense of speed, the sun above, the glorious feeling of freedom- Lyra Asked you for something. For help. You can't keep the smile off your face.

You just hope you don't fly through any clouds of insects between here and home.

Your muscles are starting to burn as you pull over Oakring- You made the flight in only a few minutes, pushing yourself. You circle lazily as you head in to land. Lyra needs help. People to move your kill. You swell with pride, just a little more. You fought something like that! With her!

She even broke the shell! She's so strong and- Okay. People. You need people to help, yes? Who should you get?

You'll do a good job. You know you will. She'll be proud and happy and she'll pet your head-

Workers. Workers bring everything through the trees.

Perfect.

Your mind circles along with your body, spiralling into town. Workers aren't monsters, though. They aren't as strong as you. And they're nowhere near as strong as Lyra. They need the harpies to keep them safe. So if they go into the woods, they need someone to keep them safe.

Your eyes fall on your solution faster than your brain does. Your wings flare, beating hard at the air to pull you into a complete stop, and you tidily drop onto the back. Ari-something. She's black, but pretty big. The other one is small. Smaller. Bigger than you. Everyone is bigger than you, but you'll keep getting bigger and bigger, and then yo-

"Ah. Jin, yes? Is there something wrong?"
You focus on Ari. Aria! Aria. That's it. Your feet shuffle, but you can't get comfortable. The shell isn't the same. With a sigh, you drop to the ground, and hop in front of the spiders.

"Hello! Lyra needs help, yes!"
They share looks, eyebrows raised, before talking over each other.
"Is she okay?" "What happened?"
You twist your head side to side.
"Lyra is good. She is strong. We fought a monster, and killed it, yes? But it is too big to carry. So I am getting help!" You declare with pride.

The little one looks worried, but they both nod. That is good. Even her sisters are strong.
"I will lead you there! But first, I will get the workers, yes."
You beat your wings heavily to lift back into the air, and the sisters chase after you from the ground. Weaving through the buildings, you come in to land on a fence outside their barracks, where many of them have gathered to eat. They turn their attention to you as you steady yourself on the railing.

"You're one of Jareth's birds, right? Whatcha lookign for, kid?"
"Workers!"
A chuckle runs through the men.
"You found em, then."
"Yes. We were hunting, but it is too big to carry! So we need help!"
>>
>>35431897
I like Shez with silk, though.
>>
>>35432062

There's a moment of silence, and all the men stare silently, waiting for you to continue. Which you don't.
"Um. To start, kid, what did you even hunt? And we can't just wade into the woods, y'know?"
"I have more spiders, yes. They will guard you. And the beast was giant, and red, and it had a shell, and claws, and spat water, and Lyra cracked it's shell, and shattered it's legs, and crushed it!" Your sentence blurs together, as you talk halting breaths between words to keep speaking.
Eyebrows raise all around you, and one man shrugs.

Another chimes in.
"Sounds like a crab, maybe?"
"The hell'd you get 'crab' from that?"
"What else would it bloody be, then?"
"Crabs are solid eating."
"Yeah."
"If it's that big-"
"Well, there's a lot of people to feed."
"Mhm."

Axes are gathered, and the men rouse themselves from benches, standing and readying themselves.
"Alright, then. Lead on."
Your pride puffs you even further. You knew you could do it. Lyra will be so happy. You take to the skies again, Arachne and human alike below, and lead them into the woods.

___________________________________________

Jin's return is lacking in restraint. The harpy makes no effort to land neatly- She just lines herself up and flies straight into you. You catch her, and she bounces excitedly in your hands.

"I brought them, yes!"
You can see the village workers filtering through the trees, axes and ropes in hand- a few have small pull carts with tall wheels. Your sisters pick their way through the roots behind them, looking up at your perch in awe.
>>
>>35431897
Spider silk is both lighter and stronger than leather, asuming it's anything like real-world spider silk. Why would we give her leather when silk is so much better?
>>
>>35432087

"I did good, yes?"
You turn your attention back to your bright-eyed cargo, and pat her gently on the head.
"Yes. Good job, Jin."
She trills lightly, a pleased sounding coo.

A few moments later, you're on the ground, discussing moving a giant crab.

The edible parts of a giant crab, anyway.

"When she said too big to move, I had an impression of something smaller, yeah?"
"Mhm."
"That's not going through the trees."
"Nah."
"Just the meat, then, yes?"
They nod at you.
"That's probably doable. Gonna make a damn mess of the carts, though."

Let me put it this way, Mongol horse archers used to wear silk shirts underneath their leather armor. When they got his by arrows, the leather would be pierced but the silk would not, allowing them to just pull the arrows out.
>Not hard to cut.
Right.

>>35432348
Yeah, but Shesz fights in hand to claw combat, blunt force trauma is much more immediate concern than projectiles.
>>
>>35432348
The actual real advantage leather has over silk is being able to deal with blunt force trauma, I mean unless you just have a thick thing of silk getting hit with a sword can still bruise and break bones if the dude swinging it is strong enough
>>
>>35432348
You know that thing about using the silk to draw the arrow out is a myth, right?

Question; if the cutting edge of the arrow didn't get through the silk, how the hell did it cut into the flesh?

Arrows don't have enough kinetic energy to just punch into a body with a blunt head.
>>
>>35432290

What
>>35432348
said.

The only reason we don't use spider silk for body armor in this day and age is because it's a royal pain to produce in a useful quantity.

There was a company that even attempted to genetically engineer goats to produce spider silk. It was a success, but they ran out of the funding necessary to go into mass production.
>>
>>35432460
You forgot to mention that the goats didn't properly secrete the silk. So the end result was more of a sticky mass of super-glue than spider-goat silk sheets.
>>
>>35432407

Fucking NOTHING protects from blunt force trauma, only dampens it a tiny bit.

Silk with plates, I tell ya.

>>
>>35432348
The reason Kevlar is used in armor today is because it 'catches' the bullet and slows it to a stop before it can penetrate. Which is useful for stopping a projectile but in the case of fabric sheets, cannot absorb the kenetic energy from causing physical trauma.

In any case we could always do as those Mongols did. A thick silk undershirt with leather armor over it.

Solid plates just mean the force is distributed over the surface, you are still going to have some major impact welts, just not a gaping hole or cracked ribs.
>>
>>35432599
The reason Kevlar catches the bullet is due to it's multi-layer weave. No layers. No spreading kinetic force. No protection. Spider silk is better than Kevlar, ergo the same vest made from silk is superior.

For one thing we don't know for certain that it would necessarily be superior to Kevlar in every way, but even if it was, it still wouldn't suit Shesz' fighting style. Kevlar is designed to protect against projectile attacks, not high force bladed or blunt attacks. Leather armor would still be better still be a better match for her at least on the surface as it would help distribute the force of the impact more evenly.

Assuming the silk in question is comparable in strength to that of Black Widows, cutting it would be much more difficult than Kevlar. Hell, it'd be borderline knife-proof if it didn't have any spots the edge can catch on to get through. I concede the point on blunt force trauma. Nothing short of ceramic plates between layers can soften those.

>>
>>35432953
Really, man, you need to cite yourself. I've been looking all over and have yet to see anything stating leather is any good at dampening impact damage (in fact, plates are put in motorcycle jackets precisely FOR impacts). I will say that there is positive remarks about it being cut resistant.

Also, I prefer silk over leather because it would be more flexible, more comfortable and breatheable (albeit not as much as wearing a simple silk robe, as there'd need to be a lot of layers), and a lot easier for Lyra to mend.
>>
>>35433139
Croc wasn't a boss. Necromancer is whichever one summoned the most extras
>>
>>35433103
The problem with this argument is that you are seeking modern solutions to combat threats not faced for 400 years. The armor worn by soldiers today is designed purely to protect against high energy projectiles, not swords axes or spears. I think we shouldn't completely disregard the in setting armor building techniques, the fact that they are widely used shows they offer protection against common threats.
>>
I see no reason not to use silk as the base to build all other armor on if there is a spider available.

I mean, all the armor types have some underlaying layer of cloth, so they all can use silk.
>>
>>35433139

The Croc was a mini boss, Necromancer was Skullman.

Now we just have to find our Ra Moon...

Also, only now do I realize how bullshit the Megaman Setting's tech level is.
>>
>>35433161
>I prefer silk over leather because it would be more flexible

More flexible = less impact resistant.

He doesn't need to cite a source that leather is somewhat impact resistant. if you've ever seen thick leather and are not a retard, you would know that.

It's not completely impact proof, nothing is. But a semi-rigid material would protect better than a highly flexible one.
>>
>>35433161
Personal expierence in large part. I have found that a leather coat over thick clothing can soften a blow markedly.

Properly tanned leather is denser than silk, which means it's heavier but leaves more material to soak up the energy.
>>
Everyone gets to work- Limbs are left as is, and given silk lines to drag them. The crabs head is pulled free, and chunks of meat are dropped into waiting thin sheets of silk.

Elle works fast.

As the workers start to fill their carts, you head into the body proper. Looking for... something. Anything really. You tear your way through organs whose purpose you don't bother guessing at.

Not because crabs are beyond understanding, or anything. You just don't care. It's a crab.

As you punch through another fleshy wall, a flood of water looses, pooling quickly on the damp floor. Peering ahead, you catch sight of a glistening gemstone, an orb the size of your fist. It pulses with blue light, and the water continues to grow.

You smile as you tear it free- You can feel the magic. Apparently giant crabs have elemental stones as an organ? or they eat them to get powers? Or they- You abandon he line of thought, and carry your prize out into the light.

The workers are nothing if not efficient- Even your sisters are piled high with food. They've stripped the carcass in no time flat, leaving the shell full of ruined organs- inedible for humans, in any case. You hop down to the ground, and are greeted by your wolf wrinkling her nose.

You'll definitely need to bathe. Exploring crab innards is messy business.

"We're packed and good to move, miss. The whole town'll eat well tonight. Just gotta bribe the innkeep to cook, is all."
The men laugh, and you follow their pace, back to town.

The answer to this is silk with armor plates.
Flexibility to dodge strikes, armor to absorb/deflect blunt strikes. Padded silk would have impact absorbtion as well.

As for the question of whether spider silk can stop swords and spears.
Skip to five minutes. A katana can't cut the Kevlar. Spider silk (if it has RW properties) is harder to cut than Kevlar
>>
>>35433195
Look up stab vests. Usually used by riot police, slash and stab proof. Guess what it's made from. Hint: it starts with K.

The difference between a ballistic vest and a stab vest is layer placement. Nothing stops someone from making a heavier vest that has both types of layers. And occasionally metal plates for further reinforcement against rifle rounds.

I'm more focused on flexibility because I think that if Shez is getting hit by something then there's something very wrong. She's a skirmisher and a pack fighter, not a stand up fighter like Lyra, her first line of defense is not being hit in the first place. I would almost prefer forgoing armor in the first place, except I know no one would support that.

>>35433337
Fair enough, though again I don't think that the trade off for flexibility is worth it.

Evolution is a monster thing. Elves don't do that.

I'm guessing level in non-evolving creatures work differently also.

I doubt a single level for an Elf is equivalent to a Spider level. Since ours reset every time we reach 100, they are effectively devalued.

I bet 42 Elf levels is on par with a second evolution monster like us.

But sewing this shit together is pretty complicated and metal plates make it heavier. Which is still much lighter than going Medieval Tank with Full-Plate. Cause that shit is hard to even get on, let alone fight in.
>>
>>35434049
It is going to be difficult to do that, which is why it's not happening right now. I imagine that, as Lyra gets better at weaving and crafting weapons and armor, she'll refine Shezska's armor by reinforcing areas, adding plates, and so on and so forth.
>>
>>35434049
The smith made it sound pretty straightforward to sew plates of anything into armor. What I was thinking of was using leather or maybe even boiled leather as plates in silk armor. Much lighter than metal, and could offer increased protection for the vitals, leaving Shesz blindingly fast in a fight.
>>
>>35434195
Or we could use crab chitin as well. Lighter than metal, but still strong enough to stop our glave until we put some serious force behind it. Also curved to deflect blunt weapons.
>>
>>35434547
What if we sort of sewed some crab chitin over the armor, so we could simply remove it if Shesz preferred fighting without?
>>
>>35434611
That would work. I was thinking of putting the chitin (or the boiled leather or the steel plates) between the silk layers. But that's just cause I want to dye her armor some color other than white, more stealthy that way.

Elle gathered up the silk once the food was distributed- Most of the village came out. Harpies lined every available surface, waiting for food, and swirling crowds of villagers and adventurers alike ate and sang. It was like a little festival.

And crab is delicious.

That said, after eating your share, the smell has only gotten worse. Your sisters have gone off, probably to ask Lia if they can stay the night. You're left with your two followers, and a lot of free time.

Aria wants to impress mom, not Lyra, Lyra is just a benchmark on the way there.

>>35435725
Aria admires mom and wants to be like her, the way she sees it Lyra is much closer to that goal than she is, thus Lyra is a good rival.
>>
>>35435771

It would still ultimately be a Hollow Victory, as Lyra wouldn't give a fuck, and Mom would be proud of her accomplishments regardless who they were stacked up against, hell, Mom could stack our current accomplishments up against the QUEEN and be infinitely more proud of us just for the fact that it was -our- accomplishments.

Lyra isn't being a very good rival, considering she isn't trying to be like mom at all, it just kinda happened.

Absinthe.

Daylight's burning.

Which is a-okay, cause you've got time before you have to leave.

You head towards the river, catching waves from a variety of happy and satisfied looking villagers. Jin is already starting to doze behind you, warm and full. Sheszka trots at your heels.

With everyone gathered in the centre of the town, the river is clear and empty. You shuck your armour and gear to one side- You can clean it up when you don't smell like seafood. Riverfood. Whatever.

Sheszka does a few laps, doggy paddling around while you wade as far as you can, dunking yourself and scrubbing with a clean cloth. You really have to work at your joints, which is where the smell gathered.

In short order, you find your washcloths stolen and in the hands of an owl an a wolf, who are painstakingly cleaning your legs and shell. You retreat to the shallows to make it easier on them- They're methodical, Jin scrubbing the lower part of your legs while Sheszka works down from the top. It's... well, it's certainly nicer than doing it yourself. You relax, leaning back and letting them work.

Once your joints no longer have your wolf recoiling from the smell, they go to work scrubbing down your shell, leaving each patch gleaming as they go. Satisfied with their work, they turn to retreat to the river's edge- At which point you drag both into the water proper.

Seating them next to each other, you scrub each one down, paying extra care to their fur-coated limbs- No need to drag stink around. Jin's starting to slow as she gets closer to sleeping, but Sheszka is apparently ticklish, squirming and giggling as you rub her down.

Armour and weaponry is next- each piece gets a stern scrubbing. A final dunk leaves you happy- You wait in the river for your packmate to shake herself off, clambering up next to her and toweling off, depositing the near unconscious harpy into a blanket nest. You pack away her claws in the bag, and head straight for her house, wolf in tow.

Five minutes is all it takes to start slowing Sheszka down. Going full tilt at a giant crab apparently tires people out. Non-spider people, anyway.
Her eyes droop, one at a time, and she only offers the barest complaints as you pack her up and tuck her next to Jin.

Passerby laugh softly as you travel, shell coated in sleeping monsters. The crowd has dispersed in your absence, the town returning to its sedate lifestyle as the sun grows lower overhead. Smoke puffs over houses, the forge ringing in the distance. You can hear the tinkle of laughter, floating through the air.

It's relaxing. Nice. Moments like this have a peace all their own.

It doesn't take long to reach Jin's home. A soft knock on the door gets you the response you're looking for, and you swing the door open, leaning through the portal with a smile on your face.

Your sister's turn to face you, along with a wry smile-wearing Lia.
"A bit of hunting? Just for practice?"
Your eyes slide sideways, avoiding her gaze, and she laughs.
"The town was quite happy with the food, yes. But I am thinking that you do not know how to take it easy."

"We just kind of ran into it- I mean, it wasn't on purpose. Totally on purpose. Mostly."
Elle laughs softly, and you sigh, one hand pulling your bangs back, tucking them behind one pointed ear.
"I thought I would stop in before I left, yes? You both got everything you needed?"

Aria nods, a pleased little smile on her face.
"The smith kept laughing when I came in, yes. But he is making me armour like mom's."
Her bright eyes tell you everything you need to know about that.
"The trader likes my works, as well. She promised to get me more dyes, more books, yes."

You nod, and turn your attention back to Lia.
"Then we are off, yes? I have training to do. And punishments to work, no doubt."
All three giggle as you wave goodbye, closing the door, and heading for the edge of the village.
