@QMKingofHearts.

Today is December 30th, UC 0083. You are Dominic O'Hara, a Commander in the Titans anti-terror organization and squadron leader for the mobile weapon forces aboard the SCV-82 Valkyrie. About five minutes ago, you found a young girl stuck in your ship's airlock.

“Mineva,” you tell the girl in the sternest voice you can muster, causing her to shrink away a little. “Why did you run away from Miss Serana?”

Mineva Zabi looks away from your steely-eyed gaze, clearly feeling some guilt over having given Haman's little sister and her main caretaker the slip. “... I was bored,” she mutters pitifully.

“That's no excuse to run off like that, Mineva,” you sigh, lifting the young heiress and placing her on your shoulders before turning down the corridor towards Serana Karn's quarters. “This is a military ship, kiddo. There's lots of places here that you just shouldn't be trying to get into... like the airlocks. What were you even trying to do?”

“Wanna see your Gundam.”

“If you're good, I'll do one better than that,” you promise her. “I'll take you out in it. How's that sound?”

“REALLY!?” Mineva squeals with joy, flailing against your head and shoulders. Apparently she's already forgotten that she was supposed to be upset. “THAT'S SO COOL!”

“Mhm,” you nod. “But you've gotta promise to listen to Miss Serana and Miss Natalie, okay?”

“Okay!”

As you pass by Carya, she can't help but grin at you and your passenger.
(1/2)
>>
>>35433303
“Found her,” you announce, lifting Mineva off your shoulders and passing her to Natalie Bianchi, who seems immensely relieved.

“Where was she this time?” Natalie asks, a trace of concern creeping into her voice.

You frown, seriously debating whether you should tell her what actually happened. Finally, you decide on a half-truth. “She got herself stuck in a compartment. But I bribed her with a trip out in my Gundam, so I don't think it'll happen again.”

Looking over to Mineva, who's still beside herself with excitement, you raise an eyebrow. “Isn't that right, lady Mineva?”

The girl nods at you emphatically. “Yup! I promised!”

“Then I suppose that settles it. Thank you, Commander O'Hara: you've been very helpful since we came aboard.”

“It's no trouble at all,” you lie with a smile on your face. Really it's been one colossal pain in your ass, but then again you're not going to tell them that. Besides, it's not like you're unwilling to deal with the trouble that comes with picking up every stray Newtype or heiress you run across.

Now, what to do with yourself? You need to set your priorities...
>There's some excitement in the hangar, apparently. You can feel it from here.

We can go see Karen after that.

I guess we could take Mineva with us to see the Gundams?
>>
>>35433357
>hangar

Take Mineva.

So the four main plothooks we have are the Cyber-Newtype labs, the Conspiracy with Vist that got our magical hobo bombed out of his house, and the Titans themselves. With the five month gap between January and June, we should be able to get some legwork done.

Oh, and we also have six Newtype now if Natalie and Serena are. You know what that means? Three fully functional Slattern upgrades. Get to training them in the Sims.
>>
>>35433498
Natalie and Serana have shown no aptitude for it, and neither feels especially like they are: possibly because neither of them has had a taste of combat. The only one you've met who feels like they have "potential" was Kamille.
>>
>>35433498
Well, we'd have to hit Australia after this to get Nina's info on whatever AE (and Vist) have in store for us. Which probably has something to do with the Titans as well.

Maybe call Karen while we're on our way to the hangar, ask her if we could set course?
>>
>>35433357
>There's some excitement in the hangar, apparently. You can feel it from here.

By the way about 'Artesia's feeling a bit down about Amuro's sorry state.' do you mean him being on house arrest or something else?
>>
>>35433498
From what I recall, Serena is a Newtype, Natalie isn't. But I'm not comfortable putting Serena in a mobile suit, she's only 13. There is a minimum age requirement, despite what Uso Ewin would have you believe.
>>
>>35433552
>no aptitude

That's kind of shitty. Was wondering if we'd finally be able to kit out our last two suits.

How much progress have we made in laundering the gold and gifted art? And has the Doktor and Emary got around to rewiring the Schnee Weiss psychommu to function with funnels and bits again?
>>
>>35433629
It's been five days or so since you got that stuff. Gold has to be dispersed over a long period of time, because people will notice large shipments of it. You've returned to London to hand off the art to University College London for identification and repatriation.

The Schnee Weiss is almost useless as is. herr Doktor has been working on it.

>>35433604
That works. I also forgot investigating the real reason why Kowen was arrested. Get him out of the brig. That will shoot ourselves incredibly high on Jamitov's shitlist though.

>>35433622
Gotta start 'em young. I mean, if the Schnee Weiss psychommu is rewired, one of them can use the funnels from our suit and the Schnwarz.

Oh, are we going to finally settle on a unit handle or just take all of them to confuse the hell out of people?

My guess? He's responsible for not enough casualties on the Feddies' side. Not enough to grant the Titans absolute power over space like they'd get if the fleet was decimated, at least.
>>
>>35433357
You suddenly have an idea. “Hey, you think I could take Miss Mineva down to the hangar? Seems there's something exciting going on down there.”

Natalie looks down nervously at Mineva, who you can tell is overjoyed at the prospect. “I suppose it will be okay, so long as you're watching her.”

“Well then, hop on,” you tell Mineva, turning and taking a knee to let her jump onto your back.

“THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!” she shouts loudly next to your ear.

“Use your inside voice, Lady Mineva,” Natalie sighs, massaging her temples gently.

In the hangar, it's clear to you where the feeling of excitement is coming from: Audrey, Carya, Rossweisse and Haman are standing with Emary and the Doctor. The two technicians are looking over a blueprint. Audrey waves you over when she notices your arrival.

“I see you brought a visitor,” she tells you, looking up at Mineva as she perches on your shoulders.

“He promised,” Mineva replies defensively.

Audrey laughs quietly. “No worries. So long as you're with Dominic it's fine.”

“So, what are you all looking at here?”

The Doctor gives you a cheeky grin. “It's a mobile suit, Dominic. We've put the designs Miss Kar gave us to good use, and Frank got back with a modified internal frame design.”

You look down at the blueprints: “Gundam Lilium (Ikebana)”. It doesn't look like any mobile suit you've ever seen.

So what is, and how does it perform compared to our old Lilium? There has to be a reason everyone's this excited.
>>
>>35434059
"Why are we still going with flowery names if its an all new suit?"

In a general question, how is the suit even going to be possible to build before the movable frame is designed?
>>
>>35434059
>Questions about its design?
Mostly about stresses it'll have to go through when it's "transforming" under both space and atmospheric conditions.

And how many innovations that Audrey and Doc cooked up in the past were applied to the machine?
>>
>>35434168
I think it has been. "Frank" is Franklin Bidan, the inventor of the movable frame. I guess some of the changes we made caused its development cycle to get sped up. Might not be as good as the later version, but we've got a prototype ready for testing, it seems.
>>
>>35434134
WAIT I THINK I REMEMBER, IS THIS OUR TWO PILOT DESIGN WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR???
>>
>>35434059
"What have you got for me, Doc? I know the general gist from Audrey with the sub-arms and the modular blocks, but that's about it."

"How modular is the package anyway and can it be used to upgrade other suits with similar specs? Such as the Kampfer for instance."

Zeku Eins/Zwei here we come.

Mineva has it even better than our little bro. We didn't even offer to take him for a ride in our Gundam.

And another thing with Roberto and Apolly. Cement their loyalty. For the love of Christ. Do not let Masunaga get them killed.

"So, how will it work in combined mode and it's separated modes? I assume that some power and thrust is lost as separate machines... how delicate is the combining liable to be?"
>>
>>35434059
>Questions about its design?
"This is the combining design Audrey was talking about? Nice. I have two questions: Firstly, how well can the new frame handle the stresses of separating and transforming? Secondly, what kind of capabilities will the individual planes have when separate?"
>>
>>35434168
Frank Bidan has gotten hold of the development notes on the GM Quel, which used an experimental frame in its arms which was similar to the movable frame. Providing him with that as well as battle data on its use allowed him to hash out a design.

It may take some testing, but the principles have been demonstrated.

I'm assuming that shield boosters will be the primary supplier for the thrust in the upper body, while the heel thrusters supply the lower part when both are separated. Might need a back skirt thruster added, in case the lower body thrust is lacking.

Man, I can't even imagine how fast this'll go in combined mode.
>>
>>35434491
Probably faster than the Full Burnern with room to wiggle.

Norris is going to be so jelly.
>>
As cool as it is, the Ikebana and Slattern are both huge wastes of incredibly valuable Newtypes. Sticking two in one machine increases the odds of losing both during unit destruction or capture.
>>
>>35434553
Given that 08th MS Team still happened as per canon, isn't Norris dead?

And we can't call Four Vaginas Norris, because Blondy never piloted a Gouf.
>>
>>35434326
Could we somehow get Frank all the blueprints we got over the time in secret?

He might be interested in the Slattern or some other stuff.
>>
>>35434695
Norris Masunaga has piloted all of the suits. It's the reason why he's called the Flashing Comet.
>>
>>35434646
Considering we are working towards keeping our team together more than efficiency, its a fine compromise that could be minimized to one pilot later
>>

this
>>
>>35434752
Oh, you mean Shinn Asuno?
>>
>>35434781
I understand that, but it's still incredibly risky. Plus, with two Ikebana and Slattern suits running, we can stick Sayla in the remaining Lilium suit and Audrey in the Kampfer.
>>
>>35434646
Well, it's not Victory Gundam territory yet where there's an assembly line of spare core block units that can be sent piecemeal, but I'm happy with a proof of concept start in the Ikebana.
>>
>>35434059
“Ikebana?” you ask aloud. “What's with all the flowery names still?”

Haman cocks an eyebrow at you in surprise. “You know what ikebana is?”

“Yeah,” you tell her. “We had a club for that in high school. The guys in it got beaten up a lot.”

“It's an Anaheim thing,” Emary informs you. “Kind of tradition at this point, so why break it?”

You shrug. “Fair enough. So, sell me on this upgrade. Why this instead of “Slattern”?”

Looking over the schematics, you'd describe it as almost more of a Zeon design than a Federation one: the metal is distributed smoothly across the machine's surface rather than the angular designs derived from the old Core Block designs, though it seems much lighter. It also has a GM-styled head with integral vulcans and a visored faceplate. A second diagram shows the machine split into two: so that's what Audrey was considering?

“You've noticed it has two cockpits,” Audrey begins. “It can separate into two fighters, each well armed and maneuverable. They're even quicker than the base suit, because it lets all the thrust for each half be oriented in one direction.”

“And the transformation mechanism?” Carya asks. “It seems like a massive weak spot.”

“It's not, actually,” the Doctor tells you. “It's durable. The link system is actually a little more robust than the old Core Block system... which it's actually pretty derivative of.”

“Overall thrust?” Rosse asks quietly, eying the smooth surfaces and lack of exposed thrusters on the calves.

“Built into the leg armor,” Emary replies. “They can be grafted right to the frame, so it lets us wrap them in more aerodynamically sound panels.”
(1/2)
>>
>>35434897
You lean in closer so that Mineva can see better. “And its weapons?”

“Your main rifle can tuck into the underside of the “attacker”: which has your psycommu cockpit,” Emary tells you. “The back skirt of the “bomber” has eight funnels, and a mounting point for a smaller weapon usable in either form. You have space for beam sabers and or grenades in both wrists, and rotary cannons in the chest, usable in either form. There are two beam spot guns on the hips of the bomber that can only be used in its detached form. The weapons may be tougher to aim in the separated forms, though.”

“That can't be it?” you ask cannily, eying the Doctor.

The old man smiles. “Nope. The beam sabers can work as spot guns when mounted to the suit's generator, and the bomber section has two subarms that tuck into aerodynamically-designed housings at the waist.”

“...and?”

“And each have a heat wire.”

Carrina practically licks her lips in anticipation. “Those retain their shock function as well?”

The doctor nods in affirmation, his grin widening. “Correct. They'd be a pain to use during atmospheric flight though. You'll also have access to the jamming systems of the Lilium's current generation, along with the first miniature MPIWS scanners and a new psycho-receiver for the second cockpit that will allow you to share data and coordinate attacks.”
(2/3)
>>
>>35435163
“And the material?” Haman asks. “Gundarium, I trust?”

Emary shakes her head. “There's a new, slightly lighter variant being tested by Anaheim: Gundarium 'Gamma'. We'd need access to it, but Miss Nina or Miss Audevie can handle the authorizations.”

“The problem,” Emma tells you, coming over to join your group, “is that we only have the materiel for two. And we'd also have three superb Gundams that Titans would no doubt immediately lay claim to.”

“That'd be fine if we stripped the suits we have now to build the new ones,” Catrina muses. “Leaves nothing for Titans to take.”
>Proceed with the Ikebana upgrades, let Titans have the old suits
>Proceed with Ikebana, try to keep the three Liliums from Titans
>Proceed with Ikebana, but use materiel from the current-gen Liliums
>Hold off on the upgrades. It's a lot of pilots to put in one machine.
>>
>>35435193
It's pretty simply, really. We break them down into their components (thank you universal machine parts), space them in a freight container so Cima can pick them up for us, and reacquire them up at a later date after Cima and crew have had time to digest the tech.

We get the bulk of supplies though back room channels, strip key features from the Liliums so we can say that we did strip them for parts... Maybe we could give one of the downgraded Liliums to Cima, use one as a Test-bed / Learner Performance Gundam, and put the third into secret storage in-case we need to pull a High-Spec machine out of our asses...

Seems like the best plan, and this way we've got a continuous chain from our original Gundams to our super ones. That's always got value in a mecha franchise.
>>
>>35435293
Cima would also enjoy screwing over the Titans just as much as we would. Plus she'd pimp out her Gerabera and upgrade the garrison of Gelgoog marines. It's a win-win. She holds it, techs up, and is in a better position for defending her powerbase while we get to keep the suits.

However, use whatever Gundarium 'Gamma' we'll receive for the important crew related components (cockpit on both pilots) on however many Ikebanas we'll churn out. The rest of the parts we can make do with the Liliums.
>>
>>35435467
It has a CHANCE of backfiring while holding onto the current Gundams is a guaranteed shitlist accelerant for Jamitov. The Titans will get the tech from our suits one way or another if we keep them. Spacing them so they can't acquire the tech while also giving one of our allies a techboost only will help us in the long run.

You shrug. “I'm not really comfortable scrapping these three just yet... I get the feeling they could still come in handy.”

“And so what are you going to do with them, young man?” the Doctor asks you quizzically. “Certainly you don't plan to keep them here?”

“Cima may have some use for them.”

“Cima?” Carya asks you loudly. “Don't tell me you actually TRUST that woman? Not after she stabbed Delaz in the back?”

“I mean, he kinda deserved it, and she did a good job at it, but still...” Catrina adds, the sisters' eyes flashing red for a moment as she weighs in.

Haman shakes her head. “They're the other faction we distrust the least,” she grants you.

“I doubt that the Republic has the means to duplicate them, or the Newtypes to pilot them,” Audrey adds with a shrug. “They've mostly been working on upgrading those miserable Saturn engines off the old Zudahs to add them to their existing forces. Waste of time if you ask me.”

The Doctor clicks his tongue at her. “Miss Cadillac was in the evaluations unit that fielded the Zudah. She knows well how that design COULD have worked. But yes, it seems that they would be unlikely to field the Liliums, though I hate the notion of leaving it in the hands of another organization.”

“And we'd better pray Titans doesn't wise up,” Emma adds candidly. “If they do, we'd have a war on our hands.”

Okay, horrible idea time.

You ponder the point for a few long seconds. On the one hand, it'd be a good faith gesture towards the Republic. On the other, you'd be on Riddick's shitlist, if you aren't already. Then again you may honestly need these suits later, but you don't want Titans to have them. You could certainly use the parts, though... would Titans care if you sent a bunch of leftover servos and fuel tanks to the Republic for safe-keeping? And wouldn't you have to replace most of that anyway?

After a while, Mineva falls asleep and starts drooling on your head a little, which brings you back into focus. As it turns out, your team has been staring at you patiently the whole time you were lost in thought.

“Ah, he's awake,” Carya mutters.

Haman shrugs. “Signs of life are always a good thing.”

Audrey and Rosse look at you expectantly.

“How much of these suits can we re-use?” you ask Emary and the Doctor.

Emary furrows her brow for a moment. “Roughly... forty percent?”

The Doctor nods. “Thereabouts, yes. Servos, cooling, and the reactor have to go, but the armor and many of the other major systems can be re-used.”

“I'll have Karen plot a course for Earth,” you conclude. “We'll re-use as much of the suits as we can, then figure out what to do with what we have left later.”

You see the tension in Carya's shoulders visibly release. “That's better,” she tells you. “I wouldn't be happy with risking a break with Titans just yet.”

As you leave, you catch a glimpse of Serana tucking her pint-sized charge into bed with her Acguy plushie.

"So, Dom," Karen greets you as you float out into the observation bridge. "We're clear for some time. No pressing missions for Titans... what do you want to do?"

"The Captain has been beside herself," ALICE tells you, her avatar appearing on a nearby screen. "She seems not to be able to select a course."

"I keep offering to park her in Lunar orbit," Defrah offers with mock frustration. "But with no orders, I've just been keeping her in a slow spin."

"Stop that," Noel insists. "It's incredibly silly and you're making me dizzy."

"You're no fun," Defrah mutters mutinously as she corrects the Valkyrie's attitude.

"I was thinking Australia," you inform Karen. "The base at Woomera has some new tech toys to test, so it should be possible to get clearance from Titans."

Karen nods. "Upgrades from Nina?"

Hey Hearts, I recall that Reiko Holinger was rather well versed at Federation procedures based on that one scene where she was able to bypass some kind of comm access argument with a corporal.

“I'm heading down to chat with Artesia,” you announce. “She's seemed worried about Amuro Ray for a while, and we'll be on Earth. Maybe we can bust him out of house arrest or something.”

Karen waves dismissively. “Do what you want. Just don't come crying back to me with an ass full of lead.”

“You seem mighty concerned with my ass, Skipper.”

“Don't call me that.”

You shrug. “I don't hear you denying an obsession with my ass.”

“Go help Artesia sort her shit out,” Karen orders loudly, trying her best to ignore your teasing. “Catharine, have an orderly bring me some damn coffee.”

“We'll talk about your investigations when we get to Earth,” you tell ALICE, pausing before you leave the bridge.

The AI nods happily. “I will try to compile an adequate briefing for you, sir.”

“Awesome. Looking forward to it.”

Predictably, you find Artesia in her office down in sickbay. With her are Natalie Bianchi and, surprisingly, Ilia Pazom.

“Great timing,” Artesia tells you. “Dominic, do you think you can arrange for Ilia here to start working as a member of our crew?”

“If you're going to keep me here,” Ilia tells you in a wary tone, “you might as well put me to some use. I doubt you'd want me as a pilot, but I can at least scrub pans or something. As things go I feel too much like dead weight.”

"As much as I'd like to have another good pilot," you tell Ilia earnestly, "we just can't let you. Apolly and Roberto and Haman and the Sisters... we've got a LOT of Zeon talent here, and a lot of Newtypes. And that's gotta make Titans nervous."

Ilia nods, shutting her eyes in resignation. "I understand, Commander."

In a move that surprises even yourself, however, you reach up to her neck and punch in the four-number code that releases the shock collar around Ilia's neck. Her eyes open again in surprise just as you toss the collar to Artesia.

"I may be able to work out a deal with Karen to get you working in a junior MS, fueling and lifting for our refits and things like that," yo tell her. "You'll still be watched, but I'm willing to give you a chance. Don't disappoint me."

Ilia is left speechless and overwhelmed with gratitude: clearly she never expected something like this to happen. She merely bows her head silently, a tear or two in her eyes.

"I won't," she finally promises. You call Haman and have her report in to take command of Miss Pazom while you continue talking with Artesia.

"So," you ask the golden-haired Newtype, settling into a conveniently located chair. "How are things down here?"

"Fine," Artesia lies. "Taking care of minor issues. Since we're not in combat I'm playing counselor more often than doctor. It's a nice change of pace."

You open a small flask of gin from one of your uniform's pockets, taking a swig and passing it to her. Artesia stares at it for a second before accepting.

"So," you continue. "How are my crew doing? I trust those of us who are more... 'sensitive' than others aren't in too bad of shape?"

Artesia nods. "You all seem to be doing fine. And here I thought being a Newtype in combat inevitably led people to turn into basket cases, like me or my brother, or Amuro."

You shrug. "So how do I keep it that way?"

"Don't die."

"Not helpful."

She takes another long pull at the gin before passing it back to you. "Honestly, if you all keep surviving battles, you should be fine. If combat itself was enough to make any of you crack it would have happened already."

"And?" you ask, sensing there was more.

"And even Rossweisse is doing better. Her headaches have all but disappeared since arriving here."

"So being here is good for her?" you ask.

"Seems more like being around your team is good for her."

You drink again and pass Artesia the flask, which she takes another gulp from. "So, about Amuro..."

"You didn't need to try and get me drunk first," Artesia insists. "Go on."

You can't help but chuckle to yourself. "I'm in a polygamous relationship with a cyber-newtype, the would-be of Axis, and two sisters with one body. I have an AI on this ship who dresses like a pop idol, two legitimate Zeonic Princesses, your brother's ex-lover, and three Zeon pilots. I've lied about stealing two-hundred-and-fifty-million dollars in bullion and and currency from a casino, even more in fine art. And you don't think I have a screw loose?"

You snatch the flask out of the air as she sends it sailing back in your direction. "I've got a whole hardware store floating around up there."

"Oh, I know," Artesia insists. "You handle it well, though. Amuro never managed that."

"Why do you figure that was?"

Sh shrugs. "You want my honest opinion? He was technically gifted and a stronger Newtype than you are. You're a better solider... no, maybe it's better to call you a 'warrior', and you've got the instincts for combat that he always lacked."

"And what about that hit him so hard?"

"Your similarity is that you attract people to you, and forge connections with them. He had Miss Ajan, Mr Law, and that girl my brother was always with: the first two were killed in combat, and the third he killed himself by accident."

You nod in understanding. "So those connections were broken," you conclude. "He basically lost most if not all the things he was fighting for."

Artesia gives you a soft, sad smile. "He even lost his own mother... not because she died, but because they drifted apart over his decision to fight."
>So we get his mother and get them to make up. Problem solved.

Remember, Audrey can't co-pilot any Newtype machines, Rossweisse's brainwave output is very low for a Newtype so she'd struggle with remote weapons, and the Sisters get tired out quickly if they over-exert.

We should try convincing the EFF that it would be safer to keep Amuro somewhere that it would be difficult to break him out of, with a whole host of people to watch him.

Fucking Panini.

And while I was re-binging the archive and came upon the Newtype nightmare sequence, I began thinking that Mars/Axis Zeon's first target would be the Moon, specifically Von Braun.

At the mention of Zeon Zum Deikun's 'ideals' you feel obligated to slap yourself, provoking a confused and concerned look from Artesia before she continues.

"I guess... maybe they should hang out more. After all, you and the Marseille sisters get on well enough... oh god, bad mental images. Bad, bad, bad."

You laugh to yourself for a moment at the thought of what must be playing out inside Artesia's mind. "Anyway, we could try any number of things. Bright Noah could help out, or we could bring his mom in and force them to make up. Or if that all goes to shit, I'm sure seeing you would cheer him up."

Artesia shakes her head. "Trying all three is a fine plan because all three are likely to fail. I think his mom lives in the same house she did during the war, and we can fined Bright's records to see where he's serving now. As for me... we used to be in love, but that was nearly four years ago. We were kids... I don't even know that we'd really even know each other anymore."

"Well, we can deal with that later," you reassure her, returning your pocketgin to its home. "Either way, we'll snap him out of it. Okay?"

Artesia nods in agreement. "Thanks... it feels good to hear that."

"Well, if you need a shoulder to lean on," you offer, turning to leave.

Artesia smiles at you. "I'll remember."

The rest of the short flight back to Earth passes quickly. A few relaxing nights with your teammates, some banter with Karen, and a few good, long chats with ALICE that show you a surprisingly complex set of emotions behind the digital facade, and you're already entering atmosphere.

You even manage to get Reiko to doctor some records for Apolly and Roberto: they're officially Sergeants now, with backstories and false credentials for them both to memorize.

The first stop is Woomera, Australia, where you receive a warm welcome.

South claps you on the back at the sight of Mineva. "Seems your crew keeps right on growing, doesn't it young master?"

"It does, yeah," you admit with a laugh. "I keep picking up every lost cause, stray Newtype, and disinherited heiress I run across. Can't help it. I think I have a problem."

"Mighty brave, coming down here to Australia," he greets your new Zeon crew, who have all assembled in the hangar near the Valkyrie's berth to greet their hosts. "Every animal down here's terrifying, you know. You even ever been to Earth?"

"Please," Roberto insists. "I doubt we've got anything to be afraid of."

"You ever heard of a drop bear?" South insists, keeping a straight face.

Apolly eyes him carefully. "...no? Should I have?"

"How about the hoop snake?"

"The... the what?"

South gives you a wink and guides Apolly and Roberto off to take a look at Woomera's selection of high-spec mobile suits, while regaling them with stories of vicious miniature bears that drop on unsuspecting people from trees, and snakes that have learned to bite their own tails and roll like wheels to catch up with their prey. The two spacenoids swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

Nina and Uraki are the next to greet your team.

"Kou," Nina tells the now-Lieutenant, "kindly see to the civilians. They look like they could use a bite."

"Right here," the Doctor tells her, handing over a file folder.

"Good," she tells you. "I'll see about scoring some gundarium gamma for you, and we'll try and reuse some of the materials from the Lilium series. Mostly it'll be the psycommu and stealth system, I think. The other parts are pretty close to the end of their intended service life anyway."

"Treat them good," you tell her. "They've served us well."

"I know."

>>
>>35440378

>>35440413
We have so many pilots but not enough decent mobile suits. We leave the psychommu receiver encase the pilot is incapacitated. Keep it operable by oldtypes.
>>
>>35440407
... I hate how right you are.

The Iris never had a psycommu mounted, because Audrey couldn't use one anyway. Meaning you won't have one spare.

Good catch, anon.
>>
>>35440413

I mean, if we can re-piece together the val varo, might as well put in a proper cockpit in there.

Then a newtype pilot can use the machine as well as use bits. Heck, its big enough for a bit container to not add very much mass.
>>
>>35440445

Shouldn't we have a spare from dismantling the Schnee Weiss?
>>
>>35440486
The Schnee Weiss psychommu was used for the psychomine system. Doktor is currently rewiring it to work with funnels again.
>>
>>35440441
But we would need to replace the entire cockpit. The whole thing was rearranged tonbe controlled wih only one arm, and we didn't have a normal one to replace it, so we turned it into an oversized bit.

Also, I'm pretty sure the receiver replaces the cockpit.
>>
>>35440486
We have four psycommu systems: Two of the same efficient design installed in the Lilium and Viola, one primitive but effective one from the Schnee Weiss that's been integrated into the ship for controlling psycomines, and one advanced but incredibly dangerous to the used one we salvaged from the Tusche Schwarz
>>
>>35440517
We add two more arms onto the top of the mobile armor and expand Kelley's controls.

Problem, Nina?
>>
>>35440517

We already have to rebuilt the whole thing out of its parts.

It's not going to be a huge addition of work to just put in a proper cockpit. Hell we might even be able to fit in a proper 360 degree view one like the one on the Stamen.
>>
>>35440543
Then the pilot might as well be a Newtype, because he would need some really fucking good multitasking skills to use that effectively. Not to mention being ambidextrous.
>>
>>35440157
For a moment you're torn: do you want to do this in secret, or do you even want to bother?

"It may be good to do this in secret," you mention. "But then again, it'd probably take more time if you had to do the work at a more secure location."

Karen shrugs. "Actually, if you did the work without anyone else knowing, we could have your crews rebuild the Val Varo while we're here."

"Which we're technically not allowed to do," Haman adds.

"The EFF can 'technically' fuck off," Catrina growls. "We're still supposed to be autonomous."

Nina sighs, brushing her hair out of her face. "Right... we can do this here, aboard your ship, or in Antarctica."

"Antarctica base?" Rossweisse asks curiously.

"But that was abandoned after the war," Emma pipes up. "How would we get anything done there?"

Nina grins. "We've been tasked with restoring the base to working order, Any flights to or from wouldn't be noticed, and we could work in total secrecy. Or we could work aboard your ship, which tethers it to the base. Or we could work on base, which has the worst information security."

Karen shrugs, indicating it's your call. Fuck, Karen, why does it have to be you that makes all the boring calls?

I don't see how turning it from a Fuckhuge Remote Controlled Drone to a Normal Mobile Armor is an improvement.

Hell, we have half a dozen Newtypes onour ship, and most of them are pilots.
There is no need to expose an exrra pilot to danger.

If Audrey's suit does not have a psychommu, try and keep that one intact for her to use. Gut the other two. Do it on the Valkyrie. In transit if we have the hangar space.
>>
>>35440688

The way the drone was controlled was from our Lilium.

So you want to increase the danger by piling more pilots on a single failure point?

Consider that each suit will now have 2 pilots by default, you want 3 together?

Besides, its a big fuck off MA with anti-beam coating, thick armour and heavy weapons. A good pilot in there is going to be well protected.

Best way to handle it. Secrecy without looking suspicious by going out of our way to do it.
>>
>>35440759
Two pilots, one copilot. The intricacy and responsiveness of the core machines are still too great for even a Newtype to manage efficiently while also using the remote weapons.

You could spread out your pilots more, but that would prevent you from reaching peak effectiveness with each unit. Same goes with the "bomber" half: the systems, especially the subarms, would be too intricate for a newtype to handle remotely in addition to remote weapons.

Amazing power and flexibility at the cost of serious manpower for each: that's where you've been subtly headed towards since you started picking up pilots and Newtypes like a Katamari ball.
>>
>>35440866
Actually, it might work to our favor. Anaheim has been infiltrated by Zeon remnants before. We could justify the secrecy as wanting to make sure no Zeeks found out about the new machines, not the Titans.
>>
>>35440906

We need to paint the ship red. Like a diplomatic ship.
>>
>>35440919
That's actually a pretty good excuse.

I am afraid that if we tell Titans, though, they'll institute a purge of Anaheim's employees who worked for Zeonic and Zimmad.
>>
>>35440906
Didn't you say something about the Twins being able to handle piloting and psycommu simultaneously? Something about it working because technically they have two minds in there to handle it. Though I'd expect that it wouldn't work at the same efficiency as two separate pilots, because even if they have two minds they only have on brain to handle the processing.
>>
>>35440951
Nah, that's Zechs' color. We should paint it Blue/azure with dark red highlights.

Also, it needs a bumper sticker.
>My other car is a Gundam
>>
>>35440955
Nah they won't. Because if they do, Zeonic or Zimmad (or Diekun armories or whatever) would hire them back.
>>
>>35440614
"We'll try out the Antarctica base," you decide. "We can put the Valkyrie in position to play guard duty, and use the excuse that we're assisting you there. Nobody comes in un-checked, no information on our upgrades goes out."

Karen nods at you. "Sounds solid. Reiko, Catharine, let's go tell Titans we'll be a while."

"How long?" she asks, turning back over her shoulder to face Nina again.

"Should be early June," she replies.

Haman seems flabbergasted. "JUNE? Your company is never that slow!"

Nina shrugs. "We've never built a machine this complex, let alone two, let alone in secrecy."

Defrah leans heavily on her natural leg. "Maybe give Lucette a call?"

Nina shakes her head. "I'd rather not involve her in lying to Titans, but she may insist if she suspects I'm building something this cool without her."

January 17th passes: your 20th birthday. Your team is greeted by your family, who've come down to Australia to visit. Your father seems particularly taken with Lady Mineva, and promises to send your officers tartan skirts as soon as he's able.

On January 19th, South finally admits to Apolly and Roberto that drop bears and hoop snakes aren't real, but convinces them that there have been sightings of the chupacabra recently in Adelaide.

By the 21st of January, ALICE, Reiko, and Catharine have compiled a report for you on mounting evidence that Slave Wraith has been reactivated by Titans, and is now carrying out missions against Principality remnants near the suspected location of the Garden of Thorns. The leader to emerge out of Delaz's defeat seems to be a Commodore by the name of Jenson, who has proven far more gunshy than his predecessor and now must contain with the loss of a sizable chunk of the remnants' financial holdings.

It takes until February 7th to track down Captain Bright Noah: currently working as a shuttle pilot on the "Temptation".

ALICE tracks down all the scheduled flights for the Temptation, and although Catharine offers, you decline any information about where he lives. Showing up at the man's door seems far too much like how Titans would do it for your comfort.

Reiko selects cheap tickets for a low-orbit flight from Canberra to New York that should take you round-trip, and you elect to take Artesia with you to the Aerospace port to confront the Captain, who greets his passengers at the hatch as you all board.

His eyes widen in recognition as Artesia steps in front of him... he's grown a goatee since the last picture you've seen of him.

"... Sayla?" he asks incredulously.

She nods. "Good to see you, sir."

The man then eyes your Titans uniform, and the pleasant atmosphere disappears. "Are you traveling together?"

"It's a long story," you reply. "We need to talk to you in New York. Find us in the terminal."

You strap in for a three-hour flight...

“So we've been sitting here for a half hour,” you observe. “Not talking.”

“Yup.”

“Don't we at least get peanuts?” you complain.

“Not since 2017,” Artesia reminds you, referring to the incident where a terrorist tried to sneak a bomb disguised as a bag of peanuts onto a 777.

“Bastards,” you mutter to yourself as Artesia flips open an in-flight magazine.

After a few more minutes you ask her a question, trying to make idle conversation. “So... how many people do you reckon are in the mile high club?”

“No clue.”

“We're at least a hundred miles up,” you point out. “Wonder if anyone's managed it up here?”

Artesia shrugs.

There are a few more moments of silence.

“So you do anything fun while you were under house arrest?” you ask.

Artesia shrugs again. “Sat by the pool and drank daiquiris.”

“Bet you looked good doing it...”

“Oral,” she states simply.

“... what?”

“If we do it,” she explains, not even looking up from her magazine, “it's going to be oral. I don't know you well enough yet for anything else.”

For several long seconds, you can't even manage a response, your mouth simply moving with no words coming out. How do you even respond to a declaration like that? Nothing in your Newtype senses can explain it to you, either. Then, when she can't hold it in any more, Artesia breaks out laughing. “I'm messing with you, Commander. Quit acting so awkward around me, you're reminding me of Amuro... and NOT in a good way.”

“Kind of an awkward youth?” you ask.

Artesia nods in agreement. “Definitely. Well-meaning, but pretty terrible with the ladies.”

The ice largely broken, the two of you spend the rest of the flight chatting rather amiably. You find that you've got a pretty good sense of the young woman now: above all else, though, you've learned that the thing she appreciates most is openness.

Finally, after waiting in the terminal at LaGuardia for fifteen minutes, Bright steps off the shuttle and points you at an escalator.

"Pilots' lounge," he explains. "We won't be bothered there."

Once you've settled in, grabbing a beer and a handful of peanuts from off the bar, you finally strike up a conversation with the Captain.

"So why aren't you on a carrier?" Artesia asks candidly.

Bright frowns. "Titans offered me a posting in their little group..."

"And you turned them down," you finish the thought. "They blackballed you for it."

Bright nods. "That's it exactly. I've been flying shuttles since."

"That's idiotic," Artesia declares. "You're a good captain, Bright! Why the hell would the Federation allow this?"

"It does seem wasteful," you agree. "Is it just that Titans has that much power over the Federation already?"

"You should know," Bright replies.

"Come on, Bright," Artesia insists. "We're not really with Titans... none of our crew are. We're positioned to try and shape things from the inside."

"If it's gotten this bad," you counter, "we may already be too late. But that's not why we're here."

You hold out a hand for him to shake. “Done. When're you free?”

Bright stares at your head for a moment before reluctantly taking it. “The 13th. Should be free for a few days. I was going to see Mirai, but if Amuro is as bad as you seem to think he needs the time more.”

“You got married?” Artesia asks.

“We did. Kid already on the way.”

“Congratulations,” she tells him. “I hope you'll be happy.”

“Thank you, Sayla. It was good to see you again, even under the circumstances.” Bright then glares at you, before saluting you. “See to it that Miss Mass stays safe aboard your ship, Commander.”
