You sit upright with a groan. Your entire body feels heavy and sluggish. What time is it anyway? It’s not important. Your mind begins its bootup process as you shut your eyes and dig into them to remove the nights crust, flicking it to the barren wood floors.

A light tapping fills the small wooden room and as you adjust to the light you notice that Yura has begun rocking her crossed legs back and forth, lightly rapping against the wooden frame she sits upon. Something about her eyes… They’re wide and transfixed upon you, eerily glinting. Not with malice or interest; but with indifference as though she’s absentmindedly studying you. Your skin turns to gooseflesh as you recall the night where she hovered inches above you with a blade. Had she done so again? If so what made her decide to spare you?

“What are you DOING Yura? What time is it?”

“Oh?” she coos. Is she mocking you? When did you get so paranoid? “Well I do not have the time, however I’m quite certain it’s early morning my dear Lady.”

“Ok that’s… good…” You rub the back of your head as you stand up, the toll of sleeping on a hard wooden floor becoming painfully apparent as your back cracks in a series of small pops that echo about the dusty room. Something has her riled up. She’s circling you. Putting you through your paces. Poking and prodding.

“What happened last night?” you inquire.

The tapping stops with a series of thuds as her feet grind to a halt before you hear the soft patter of them on the floor and though the wood groans with your movements, it neither bends nor yields to her.

She walks, hands behind her back, before kneeling down to Inuyasha and stroking his hair. His ears twitch as he lazily raises a hand to try and sleepily bat her away. “Think now Kagome… what did you do last night? Think on it hard. So hard that it will wrinkle your pretty little face.”

“Did… did I…”

Light pierces the room like an explosion of white. You throw your hands up to shield your face from the morning sun to no avail.

“Hey, you the three troublemakers? Go get your idiot and stop squatting on my property.”

“Funny the things we try and bury.”

Although he protests, you drag Inuyasha to his feet and follow the aged man to what you think was a jail or barracks or something. Wrapped in a straw mat in the middle of the room is Kujo. He tilts his head upside down upon your entrance and smiles. “Oh hey, so you guys ARE alive. I was worried there for a bit.”

You explain to what you assume are the real local authorities, that there must have been a misunderstanding and with a few bats of your eyelashes, Kujo’s set free. As he stretches, you prepare to leave, but not before he reaches into the folds of his outfit. He hands what you can tell is a shoulder guard of one of the men from last night before saying something to him and joining the three of you. Come to think of it, whatever did happen to those Samurai? You figured out who murdered that one guy and followed some people to town… The stray thought pits out your stomach which you happily write off as hunger.

After a brief meal, the four of you are out of town and on the trail, but not before a brief stop at the local hospital to check on Inuyashas wounds. Absent mindedly you ended up wrapping your hands in spare cloth, though you’re not quite sure why. Your stomach pits out again and you leave after the dog demon receives an almost clean bill of health from the frightened doctor.

The four of you stay mostly silent during your walk and you opt instead to admire the scenery and the sounds. The weather on the trail seems far fuller of life than your previous traveling scenery had. Light trickles through the leaves of the canopy and there’s a constant song in the air as gifted by the local birds.

Your idle distractions are cut short however by the sight of what seems to be a few wood buildings up ahead. Probably a lumber camp or something to that effect. You could always walk through no problem, or you could of course walk around it.

Imagine if once in a village was a pretty little girl with a pretty and silky hair. One day, a parent or a sibling gave her a pretty red comb. Life was...idyllic. She grew into a pretty young woman, soon to be a bride.

Then came fire. Doesn't matter if it was brought by bandits, samurai, ronin, or demons. Doesn't matter if the neighboring state sent agents to burn the village and farms to halt his rival's supplies.

The girl died. Body burning, watching her pretty hair turn to ash in her hands, unable to save her family or a fiancé, doesn't matter which.

Burned to her bones, she died with a grudge. Some poor soul survived, and buries the bodies. They recognized her by the comb, and buried them together. Comb of whalebone nestled between the teeth in a charred red skull.

Imagine her first night, trying to restore her hair so maybe her family would recognize her, but they're dead? THEY DID IT! And she lashes out, at first horrified but the happy.

Happy at how soft soaking in blood has made her new hair.

The four of you stop in your tracks at the entrance of the town. Much like the walled village, it’s eerily silent here. There are clear signs that you were right in your earlier assumption however. Littered around the small handful of rough buildings are saws and stacks of lumber, long since bleached with sunlight.

“Wait a minute… where are all the people?” Your hand balls and hugs to your heart, providing a small amount of comfort to you. Though your blood should be pumping in panic, your heart is eerily steady in its pace.

“Ya, somethen’ an’t right here.” Replies Inuyasha, drawing his own broken blade.

Around you, you notice several large rocks perched atop the “homes”. Larger than normal anyway. Odd bamboo and wooden cages and other artifacts litter the treelines around the camp.

You spot a flash of brown in the distance. Another.

Several wolves walk out from inside the buildings and from the surrounding woods. Feral? This seems planned…

Kujo frantically scans the treeline and horizon as he spins in place “Ah hell, an ambush…”

The wolves circle your party, their paws gently kicking up the loose soil of the abandoned encampment, no doubt sizing you up. You step back and ready your naginata into a defensive position with the blade behind you and closer to the forest floor. You like dogs, so you’re not about to kill any innocent animals if you don’t have to. In fact you’d rather not kill anything if you don’t have to. Were those monsters at the village even alive?

You feel Kujo press up against your back, still spinning and trying to get ahold of his bearings and the situation.

You grit your teeth, waiting for them to lunge. And without a moments hesitation, two break from the pack and leap up, fangs bared. Dealing with your canine aggressors is a simple task however as you simply widen your stance and slightly change the position of your naginata. The two wolves bite into the hard metal poll with a loud yelp, and flee behind a nearby building.

The packs tactics seem to change. Several of them begin darting to and from buildings. A diversion tactic? No, the first attack was bait!

No sooner have you had the thought that you hear a loud yelp from your partner, a wolf having clamped around his left wrist. He frantically rams his fist into the beasts head, driving the teeth further in until you hear a sickening snap. Your heart sinks as he tosses the carcass of his fresh kill to the side like unwanted litter and readies himself again before slamming face first into the ground, a wolf nipping at his collar.

You turn to shoo it off before it’s kicked away by Kujo and sent spinning. It uprights itself and shakes the dust from its fur.

“These an’t normal wolves…” spits the half demon. “Nah… there’s somethen’ different. I can smell it.”

“Right, we need to set up a defensive perimeter and get the hell out of here.”

“And back into the forest? Are you insane?! Hey… where’s that hair girl?”

The pack of the canine aggressors rapidly increases until it reaches a feverous pitch. Brown blurs flash against the brown earth against a brown background and betwixt brown buildings. Your eyes strain trying to keep track of it all.

“We could really use some help Yura!”

“Oh? You seem to have things under control.” She taunts from atop her perch, hands on her chin, watching the assault play out with childlike interest.

“Jus give us a hand ya crazy bitch!” The half demon retorts, punching a lunging wolf in the face and sending it tumbling with a yelp.

Yura pulls the crook of her finger, severing one of the wolves’ paws and sending it tumbling down with a squeal. Other wolves, unable to avoid the sudden roadblock begin slamming into their downed pack mate. While the others are able to shake it off, the offending member does not get back up.

You sense an attack from your back and flip your naginata around, jabbing the end of the staff into the beasts chest. Two more leap at you from atop the roofs, however you use the same trick as before and hold your weapon out, checking the two attackers in their toothy maws.

Another rushes in from the center, but is sent back and careening into one of the buildings by a powerful kick from Inuyasha.

“There’s too many of em! Get yer ass done here or I’ll kill ya myself!”

Another lunging attack is deflected by the half demon who has long since abandoned his shattered blade in favor of his fists.

“Oh my god… we’re surrounded…” and no sooner do those whispered words leave Kujos lips than you realize the hopelessness of your situation. All around you all you can see is flashes of brown against a dust cloud. Teeth in the wind. Claws among the dirt.

“PLEASE!” you plead with the demoness. You should be breaking down at your inevitable demise. All she has to do to be rid of you and free is simply to watch you die here and now. Your carcass devoured by rabid hounds.

“Please. What?” she asks sternly like a teacher scolding a student.

”Save me…”

Her lip curls into a sickening smile as she stands up from her perch, stretching on her toes she adjusts he cleavage before leaping off, spinning into the air, her back towards the ground and her arms missing.

At this moment the wolves unleash their final attack, leaping at you all at once in a wall of tooth and fang. Yura falls gently in the center a few feet before you before her arms spiral back together, flung out as if hung on a cross.

Your eyes widen as a sea of red washes over you, your spin electrified, your mind burning. “Oh god… I remember…”

You awaken on the ground, your vision refocuses. Bodies. Dozens of them. Human bodies litter the area dead eyed with gaping mouths. Organs and gore soak you to the bone. In the distance, Yura kneels, her back turned to you. A feint scraping the only noise of the forest.

You stand up, wiping your face with your hand and brushing off some stray entrails. All around you lay scattered bodies. Others look horrified, while others bear a look of placid content despite their grisly demise.

Taking further stock of your surroundings you notice that you’re no longer in the lumber camp… the ground here is made of well trodden bone, the sky a deep and foreboding crimson. The horizon has a notable curve as though you’re atop a large sphere.

Your hands tremble, not with fear or disgust, but anticipation. Did you die? Are you in hell? You have to know. You stand up, but your footing quickly fails. You fall through the bones that seem to make up the very earth itself down to your waist. You scream, not out of fear… but of habit.

You’re… compelled. You lift yourself up, refusing to drown and climb on your hands and knees toward the figure in the distance. A great unseen force pushes back against you with every bit of ground you make as if refusing your advancement.

As you near, the ground forms solid. Bone gives way to grass, your path toward the figure paved in stone. You stand on your feet and walk forwards. The red sky softens and turns blue. A light wind kisses at your cheeks and soon Yura begins to shift and change.

Kneeling before you with her back turned, a begota above her, is a woman with long black hair in a priestess robe.

“Interesting that you would seek me now.”

“Who ARE you?”

The figure pauses, you feel the breeze pick up again, this time carrying a few stray cherry blossoms and orange leaves.

“You know who I am. And you know who they are…”

“So how do I stop it?”

“You cannot.” While the voice is melancholy you can sense the slightest twang of glee. “It has already begun.”

I think there are three major parts here: the Rot, the Jewel's inherent evil nature, and the fact that we've killed a lotta shit in the past couple days. The rot we can purify and we can eventually come to terms with the fact that we are a killer (that'll need help from Inuyasha and Kujo, with Yura's 'help' being more damaging than useful), but the Jewel's darkness can only be contained for a finite amount of time

I think you've got it right with the three key issues.

However... the Jewel can probably handle a whole lot more darkness that Kagome's recent murder spree and whatever the rot is currently pushing at it. In cannon it was in primary the possession of Naraku for a good while and it manage to deal with the evil and hate he was pushing off.


I think the falling apart is more Kagome's happy go lucky facade starting to break up. She may start actually seeing the evil of the Jewel inside of her and the death in the world around her.

Yura is helpful if she wakes Kagome up from this level of denial... which looking at the end of this thread she may have semi-accomplished.

It's not the nicest way to do it... but she's a monster so... she's being relatively tame all things considered.

But all in all I don't think Yura is an appropriate level diplomancer to turn Kagome into an all day every day destroy everything monster. Remember the wolves exploded when she reformed her arms. I don't recall what the Jewel was, but if I remember correctly, there's two powerful souls that were caught inside of it. It's a powerful artifact, but it's corrupting even when shattered. It's also really bad news for whoever reassembles the entire thing. In the official canon, there's no real winners when it comes to collecting or using the gem. If anyone had any real idea what the jewel did, they would have been better off doing their damndest to annihilate every last trace of it instead of using it for their own gain.

But this is assuming that SnowLoss hasn't taken liberties with the canon, of course.

It happens to tons of quests that aren't based off popular and current animus and trends.
There's usually a slow thread or two, then a sudden random surge, then a dip off. After the dipoff you have your regulars that stick around unless you do something really really dumb.

Hietus's also hurt if you're not one of the small handfuls of larger quests. Hell look at any of Cosgroves quests. Massive followings, but after a few outbursts and long breaks they're pretty slow now (at least by comparison).

It sucks, but there's only so many things people can read and follow a day.

Its been a little over a month since you started your first solo mission: to track a roving band of demons wreaking havoc across the territory. Every once in a while you’ve managed to pick off a few of them or send reports back to your hometown and base of operations. While dealing with demons of this caliber and sentience is not something you and your clan are used to, it is no different than any other of your numerous encounters in any significant way.

The replies from your letters have always been the same however “continue your observations”. This task, while simple, has proven rather difficult to do, for you can hardly stomach their wanton destruction with such regularity and remain actionless. While their business appeared to be a simple one, one for which they were most skilled and inclined, you couldn’t help but feel there was some underlying reason to it which was the core of your continued investigations. Tiresome though they may be.

As a matter of interest and amusement you had also begun tracking a small group of what you perceive to be mercenaries some time ago. Their path always one or two steps behind the ravenous tribe like two fighters unconsciously circling one another. It was during one of your casual peeping’s that your lifelong companion had been maimed. While not too serious for a demon, it still boiled your blood that they would injure a creature so nonchalantly and then not even bother to investigate their own carnage. Not to mention it being a result of your own carelessness.

You can sense a definite demonic aura about the young man and through your travels and profession you know that demons are just as susceptible to fear as any other living creature, however this was something a bit… different.

“Ex-excuse me s-“ and no sooner had you spoke up than you had been tackled by the brutish man and carried along his frantic retreat down the forested crag, hoisted over his shoulder like cargo. Struggle as you might, his grip won’t seem to break and it’s not until he comes to a sliding halt under a boulder that he sets you down, out of breath and covered in sweat.

While he’s young he bears a lot of sharp features, both literally and figuratively. Through his open panting mouth you can see a pair of fangs, aside his head and under his tied hair are two large and pointed ears. No doubt a powerful wolf demon judging by his physical appearance and mish mash of furs and scavenged armor.

You take a moment longer to analyze the man and are able to easily conclude that this is quite possibly the leader of the demon tribe you’ve been stalking simply by the ornamental blade hung at his waist. If this was was an underling, such an artifact would have been confiscated from him and worn by the leader.

If you offer your assistance it may provide you additional insight into the tribes activity you would not have had access to otherwise as well as scratch your curious itch. Good prey is hard to come by after all. On the other hand… you could most likely kill him with little trouble in his current state. The young wolf demon crosses his arms and grins a toothy grin “Ya know, for a human you’ve got guts. I like that. Follow me if you can keep up.” In a flash he disappears in a whirlwind and you promptly give chase.

After a short while you arrive at a campsite and while he easily outpaced you, you managed to conserve your breathing well enough to where you appear to have traversed to the location effortlessly. Yeah, there are a lot of vague things like the bag and the bangles (I assume it's really bangle and not bengal, given that you wear them right where Koga places the jewel shards). It could be worse.
