'REMEMBERING THE SUBJECT FIELD' EDITION

Remember, anon:
INSIGHT. CHECKS.
Also, don't forget about the INSIGHT mechanic! It's just a 1d5 roll, greentext highlighting what you want to know more about, and maybe a a bit more specification to make it clear what it is you're empirically lusting for.

LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS
TO DEFEAT
ROBOTS

Except, y'know, for realsies this time.

Also, if need be, I'll implement a new 'boss-fight'-exclusive mechanic that I've been toying around with- if you feel like you're getting your bum swatted, you might mention reinforcements or something similar... (or just tell me to get my head in the game or somethin', I suppose)

YOU are Akari Takamichi, Level 4 Pyroknieticist kickin' it old school in Academy City. Recently, you've:
-Stopped the end of the world with basic logic and reasoning
-Started on getting the world made safe from alien scum
-Eked a confession out of Mato!
-Oh, and been roped into fighting off a giant robot (that's right now!)

You exhale slowly and peek around the corner, palms pressed against the rough brick walls of the building- not so much for 'balance', really- more to steady yourself than anything else.
The huge metal claws of Mato's armored left hand are on your own left hip- the side of you closest to the edge of the building, of course- and you're pretty sure the tips of the claws on her right hand are sunk a few inches into the wall itself.

You'd note how cute and probably-unnecessary that was, were you not spying on a GIANT GODDAMN ROBOT.
>>
Mostly, you're supposed to figure out how fast it's moving, and where red-head (yes, you're a red-head, too, but... GET OFF MY BACK) spear-girl needs to do her...

Circle stuff.

She- her name's Kyouko (is it rude to not think about people by their names?)- claims her power involves weakening structures and causing catastrophic failures or something of that nature.

You're 88.69% sure that she was lying, but you didn't question it- Mami gave you one of those 'we can talk about this stuff /after/ we deal with Mr. MECHAGODZILLA over there' looks.

What's weirder is the fact that her spear- which has a head so big that it's almost like a pointy glaive, rather than a spear- was tough enough to withstand you heating it white-hot without becoming a puddle... or even losing any of its structural integrity at all.

Hot enough to cut through the asphalt like butter.

The blue-haired, cape-wearing girl seemed more honest with her power- she makes and throws swords (and, according to Kyouko, other 'bladed melee instruments', including her silly-big spear). Her name's... Sayaka, you think.

They didn't even tell you their surnames, in your defense- addressing them so informally seems so... forward.

Mami, Kyouko, and Sayaka are all pressed up against the building on the opposite side of this 4-way intersection, and a pair of heavily-augmented girls- 'Strength' and 'Chariot', as they seem to prefer to be addressed- are with you and Mato.

Another deep breath.

The world shakes as the metallic leviathan brings its foot down once more, just as you were about to peek out.

You grit your teeth.

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”

Teddy Roosevelt said that.

And he probably knew his stuff better than you do.

You peek around the corner and-

Holy shit.

You knew it'd be big, what with the 'giant robot' and the ground-shaking and what-not.

But...

Holy shit.

Wait, is that Mechagodzilla?

It's smaller than the one in the movies would've been, but it's otherwise a dead ringer.

It's so big that it barely fits on the street.

Still, it has those glassy yellow lens-eye-thingies, and the blade-like metal teeth and dorsal plates, and a tail that's swishing back and forth behind it, just barely above the ground.

It's progressing slowly- cars seem to give it a bit of trouble, if only because it can't really maneuver very well between the tall buildings on either side of it.

You squint, blink, and attempt to peer at things in a few ways.

Mato's clawed hand tightens its grip on your waist. She's anxious; concerned for your safety (isn't that just the sweetest?)

You feel like there's something else there.

You feel it in your bones.

It's the same kind of sensation as having something right on the tip of your tongue.

All you need is a little... more.

Of course, this is significantly different from having a word on the tip of your tongue, as that sort of situation usually doesn't involve giant robots and the like.

Still, though...

You feel some sort of... strange... something.

Almost like a whisper.

Nee-chan would compare it to Obi-wan's ghost telling Luke to use the Force, you're almost certain of that.

You close your eyes. You're the pyrokineticist that's supposed to save the universe- maybe you should think about this in terms of heat and fire...
...

Heat is vibration. Excited particles.

Fire is...
Flames are hollow…

Hollow.

… Hollow!

That's it!

You open your eyes and see. Not with your eyes, but not without them, either.
It's the metaphorical kind of seeing, really.

Mechagodzilla was manned- hollow.

And this thing's obviously got significantly better range of motion when it's hunched over to some degree.

Its meant to take out ground targets... yet, it hasn't made any sort of overt hostile action towards any of the buildings or vehicles nearby.
Moreover, there's a rather large number of what appear to be smaller robot-dinosaurs milling about at its feet.

There's also a strange marking on its upper arm.
… a mop.

You pull away from the corner and sigh.

Mato looks at you expectantly, the look on her face telling you she'd be worriedly asking questions if she could talk in her current form.

You should report your findings...

The question is... how?

You call a huddle, and relay what you saw via a complex system of hand-signals, nose-twitches, and Looks.

Strength makes a confused face.

[Wait. Were they /robot/ dinosaurs, or /cyborg/ dinosaurs?]

Chariot bonks her on the head with the flat of her sword. [Cyborg. Pay attention!]

Strength makes a kicked-puppy face. [Do you think they were Macellarius, then? Or maybe even Sicarius?]

Chariot seems pretty grumpy. [Takamichi-san saw them, didn't she? Do you really think she would've seen them if they were Sicarius?]

[… No.]

Strength is way too cute... and watching her make hand-signals with those huge metal arms of hers is even cuter.

… No, Akari! Focus on the mission!

Mato finishes scratching what you relayed down onto her rock, and presents it to you for approval.

You frown. [Mato, this is English.]

She nods and turns it over.

[… Is that Mandarin?]

She blushes and turns it over again.
Ah, it's Japanese on this side.

[… What'd you write it down in English and Chinese for? And... since when do you know those languages?]

Mato shrugs.

You nod your approval, and she throws it across the street.

“OW! WHAT THE HELL?!”

Oh. Looks like she hit Sayaka with that.

Mami shrugs and gives you a look- 'We can't read Chinese,' it says.

Mato scratches a message onto another rock. 'Turn it over,' it says. You nod.

Mato throws it, and-

“OW, GOD DAMMIT-”

Mami gives you another look, and Sayaka throws the rock back to Mato, who catches it inches away from her face.

Mami's look says, 'Why's it in English?'

Sayaka's rock doesn't even have a message on it- just the same old 'Turn it over.'

You and Mato exchange looks.

'You want me to throw it back again?'

'Sure- I mean, yeah, what else can ya do?'

Mato throws the rock.

Sayaka lets loose a torrent of profanity, and Mami gives you a thumbs-up.

The three of them dash across the street to join you.

Oh, yeah. Why didn't /you/ think of that?

To be fair, we have a girl with machine gun fingers. That alone should stop the dinosaurs from charging us, especially if the bullets are Armor Piercing, and if you're going to give a girl Giant Machine Gun Fingers then you should finish the job and giver proper bullets to use.

There's also Mami, who has Lasers. I trust I don't need to explain further.

Then we have Akari, who has Line of Sight explosions with a rate of fire of "as fast as she can snap her fingers".

All in all, we can theoretically stand in one spot and just shoot at the dinosaurs, with Mami sniping, Strenght on Crowd Control and Akari acting like a living Howitzer.

That is, if the Big Guy doesn't try to kill us because we killed his pals.
>>
>>35465843
>in melee with the giant robot
Your ranged combat wouldn't matter, because you wouldn't get the chance to use it.
Because you'd be getting mauled by a bunch of reasonably-sized dinobots.
>>
You scratch your chin and ponder.

“Okay,” you say after a few moments of contemplation, “Team One will get in close and try to infiltrate the giant robot-”

There's a shuffling noise as everyone's hand shoots up.

“... Yes?”

“Why?”

“How?”

“Is there a hatch or something of that nature that I didn't see?”

“The entrance would definitely be up high. How would we climb it?”

“I don't have feet. Climbing'd be a problem.”

“My gloves are way too big to grab handholds, and WHAT HAPPENED TO NOT HAVING LISCENCES?”

Mato pats Strength on the head.

You blink.

“And Team Two will fight the smaller robots.”

“Yes?”

“Did you forget about the circle thing, Takamichi-san?”

Hmm, so the cyborg dinosaurs are more robot than dinosaur?

Does it even matter?

You scratch the back of your head and laugh awkwardly.

“Yeah, I guess I did. Sorry.”

“Don't worry about it- I forget stuff all the time. Right, Sayaka?”

Chariot frowns. “The circle thing is the one where we blow it up, right? If we're gonna do that, we should try to not be climbing all over it. I hear exploding makes you, y'know, dead.”

Hmm.

>>
>>35466489
Huh. I just realized both the Shining Gundam and GaoGaiGar have super modes where they glow Gold.

We should get something like that by the time the Aliens invade, a super mode for Mato where she overclocks her cyborg parts and glows golden just like Guy and one for Akari that she gets after she masters the fire inside her or something.
>>
>>35466665
To be fair, gold is a pretty damn common color as Super Modes go.
>>
>>35466656
The problem is that with your current plan, our freinds would be IN the robot when it explodes. An yes, exploding automatons was mopmans thing since he got first mentioned.

No, they'd almost certainly be /on/ it.

BECAUSE HE'S CRAZY, NOT STUPID.

Not that anyone can be assed to actually fucking read what the characters are saying or anything.
>>
>>35466780
I was assuming they would plan to drag the other occupant out before hijacking it.
And I fully expect it to have a detonator for that case, because thats what I would do if I would build locally controlled giant robots.

>>
>>35466856
You assume mopman is the guy in the robot. And that he can't escape us like he has done before and blow it up anyway.
>>
>>35466814
>Drag him out
You can't get at him without critically damaging the thing.
Or do you legitimately think that they'd build something any way other than that? With the pilot being the safest thing in the whole machine?

>Every NPC tells you that the plan is stupid- for a different reason.
>One even points out a plan the QM accidentally forgot to include, that was part of the popular write-in from earlier.
>Half of your infiltration team can't even climb

This is like one of those things, where the program asks you 'DO YOU REALLY WANT TO (x)?' fifteen times.

I mean, nobody else thinks this is a good idea.
Is it railroading if they don't go with your stupid and suicidal plan?
Because that's what I see happening- you insisting, and them telling you to bugger off.
>>
>>35466909
Last time there we only two of us, now there are what, seven of us? Plus Akari's had a pretty serious power-up since then.
>>
>>35466856
>>35466909
Indeed, he might have built a robot to pilot the robot.
and before you say that's stupid, consider the fact that the man is apparently an engineering genius.
He CAN build an extra robot and he CAN program it to control MechaGodzilla.

It's a legitimate plan.
>>
>>35467002
Then just do that, if the plan can't work, then just let it fail. They will have to live with that if they can't take the hint.
>>
>>35467002
Targeting the cockpit is a pretty common anime trope, so I figured with enough firepower and our ridiculous rolls we could potentially pull it off. And we can switch up the infiltration team if we have to get a better balance for it.
>>
>>35467002
Guys, when the QM (who has been a total bro so far) takes you aside amd explain that he has been spending the past five updates trying to tell you your plan is stupid, then maybe, just maybe we shouldn't do it.
>>
>>35467002
All I wanted to point out is that we've nonsensed our way through - and well past - the plot before, so it's not like this is a unique instance by any means.
>>
>>35467058
>Targeting the cockpit is a pretty common anime trope, so I figured with enough firepower and our ridiculous rolls we could potentially pull it off.

Maybe we should stop relying on ridiculous rolls for success and just make an actual fucking plan that is not stupid In and Out Of Character?

The GM has called us out. We need to stop being so hard headed about this.
>>
>>35467058
The problem is, as has been explained before, if we take the cockpit by force, we damage the robot too much to use it anymore. There is no way to get to the thing without smashing the robot. Its not a matter of lack of firepower, the issue is that enough force to get to the cockpit, would make the robot unusable.

>>35467098
Can't really think of any case like that, except the fire eating.
>>
>>35467013
>an engineering genius
No, not really. He has a team of engineers.
... and that's not stupid
just really pointless.
If he wanted to control it remotely, he'd just control it remotely.

>>35467098
And I'm trying to point out that one doesn't just go 'hey, let's build a giant robot' and do so without planning or thinking about how it'll be engaged.
One gets a team of smart dudes/engineers and says 'yo, dawgs, how do we do dis?'
And they're like 'Let's make it exactly like every giant robot in every anime and videogame /ISN'T/.'
>>
>>35467116
But our ridiculous rolls are part of who Akari is at this point, otherwise you don't get devouring Innocentius or talking down Precia. If we fail though, we fail I guess.
>>
>>35467171
>'Let's make it exactly like every giant robot in every anime and videogame /ISN'T/.'
That is most definitely NOT how AC rolls at all, but Word of God I guess. If we can't then I suppose we can't, though that doesn't stop me from wanting a robot to call our own.
>>
>>35467098
>we've nonsensed our way through - and well past - the plot before

But not when the GM has all but vetoed the plan on grounds of "you idiots would fail because it has no physical way to succeed. "

To pit it in perspective, when we ate Innocentius, we had a way to get there and a way to withstand the heat long enough to grab the core and let our ridiculous roll do its thing.

Here, we have no way to get there, No way to withstand the Heat and we would need multiple ridiculous rolls to do it.
>>
>>35467177
Talking down Precia was actually because we made sense and she run on nonsense logic and plans. Its pretty much the exact opposite.
And this is just not even nearly cool enough to run on rule of cool. Its just some giant robot, we have genius engineer with us, she can make those too.
>>
>>35467177
we talked down precia using Common Fucking Sense.
The roll was to see if her lackey wouls just go NANANA NOT LISTENING or pay some fucking attention to us.
The roll wouldn't have happened if our plan hadn't made sense in the first place.
>>
>>35467220
We'll get our Mecha when the Aliens attack and we have a reason to have a mecha. Right now, it would just be a waste of space and resources.
>>

>>
>>35467365

It's one of the things that set this quest apart from the legion of other quests on /tg/.

Akari frowns. “... I mean, the circle thing sounds great in theory and all, but...” She trails off. She doesn't want to express disbelief in your capabilities, but she doesn't trust them, either.

… Dammit.

“...wouldn't the entrance be on the back? I mean, that's where I'd put it- it's back is sloped, so the armor doesn't need to be as thick there, because it can rely on stuff glancing off; but putting the door on top or on the front would be suicide, because those are the angles where you'd be catching the most fire from. Right?”

You're Kyouko, and your hasty lie doesn't have your fellow red-head convinced.

And, really, who could blame her?

All you told her was that you'd make a circle and some B.S. about structural integrity or some-such.

Because 'I'm a wizard' isn't usually a very efficient- or desirable- way to explain things.

But, desirable or not, it's true.

But you've seen the back of this thing, and there's no door there, either. Of course, you scryed it, so you can't really use it to support your argument without spilling the beans.

Yeah, most things can be justified. Besides, generic strength and speed boosting spells are used for most combat magicians anyways. Hell, the absolute weakest armors the Knights of England use still multiplies their speed 20x.
>>

You are Akari Takamichi, and you're feeling faster and stronger than usual, thanks to... magic, it would seem.

Kyouko used a few spells- one to make the lot of you faster, and another to make you stronger.

You weren't exactly convinced at first, and the whole 'Espers can't do magic without blowing themselves up- or worse' deal seems... really dodgy, but she did manage to walk Chariot through a spell- and that glowing rune-thing wouldn't fit into any ability that could also affect people physically, so... there's that.

And you're pretty sure that Mato wouldn't really react to any 'normal' physical enhancement ability, especially while she's big- but even she seems stronger and faster.

“Oh, that's easy- it's not that casting something powerful enough to take that thing out is a problem- it's that the flashy spells are quicker and easier... and a lot more overt. The spell I'm wanting to use doesn't even produce sparks- it just breaks things, really. It's effective and looks almost exactly like a perfect accident, so it's more difficult to cast, see?”

“Why not use something that looks like an ability and pass it off as being an esper, though?”

Kyouko grins and pushes her glasses farther up the bridge of her nose. “I think you know why- because I'm not on any Academy City database as 'Kyouko Sakura- Level blah: blah-blah-kineticist' or anything. It'd set off alarm bells an' stuff- especially considering that a lot of those spells are about as effective as the stuff a Level 4 could put out.”

You... you're not sure you believe that last bit, but it could just be you subconsciously going 'hey, I'm a Level 4- screw you, lady!' or something.

“... How long does this spell take to prepare? And how does it work?”

Kyouko shrugs. “It depends on a number of things- having more people helping me draw the rune would definitely speed the process. I doubt it'd take more than a minute or two if Sayaka helped. As for the way it works... well, it's like a magical land-mine, I guess? Once something activates it- in this case, it'll be when that thing steps on it- it, y'know, does its thing.”

Frankly, I didn't actually expect anyone to vote.

Still, I don't do the whole d2 tiebreaker thing. They wouldn't flip a coin in an election, and the choices made here actually change things from time to time.

Thus, I'll be needing another vote- and four more d100 rolls, just in case.

You are Akari Takamichi, a- no, probably more like 'the,' at this point- Level 4 Pyrokineticist living and fighting for JUSTICE in the crazy town they call Academy City, and you're currently trying to come to a decision:

Do you steal the giant robot? Or let your wizard friend blow it to kingdom come?

You're not sure about this whole 'magic' thing just yet, you're not afraid to admit... but, then again, you're not entirely certain why it is you want to steal this thing.

There's also that remark Kyouko made about her magic stuff being just as good as a Level 4 ability.
She didn't seem to /mean/ it as an insult, but... you might be a bit more miffed about that than you'd be willing to let on.

...and, as if that wasn't enough, it seems like everyone's starting to question your leadership!
Maybe it's the way you keep insisting on a the one plan that manages to endanger everyone's lives without any evidence that you're correct in your assumptions?

Nah, it couldn't be that!

Although, come to think of it, it might be how long this planning session is taking.

They're all looking at you expectantly.

Mato, Mami, Strength, Chariot, Kyouko, and Saya- oh geez, is she gonna be okay? There's a rather unpleasant-looking welt on her forehead, probably from that rock Mato threw earlier.

Mami follows your gaze, and makes a surprised noise when she sees the lump.

… Yeah, Mami'll deal with that.

For now, you've a decision to make:

>WE STEAL THE ROBOT!
>WE SPRING A TRAP/SPELL/THING!

>>
You reiterate the plan from before.

Team One tries to steal the giant robot, and Team Two tries to take out the little ones at its feet.

Strength lets out an exasperated sigh- the sort of sigh that one emits when one realizes that one is the only sane person left in a particular situation or place.

Kyouko blinks a few times, disbelief displayed plainly on her face.

Mami's behind wiggles cheerily back and forth in some sort of dance as she presses a grenade against Sayaka's bruised forehead, and you're pretty sure you hear her humming a jaunty tune- the theme from those movies, with the pirates and the shenanigans.

Sayaka, for her part, seems to be trying to balance listening to the plan and looking like an already-wet cat that's about to be tossed out into the middle of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Chariot seems to be trying to figure out if there's a way she can plant her blade-y wheel-feet that would enable her to climb... with little luck.

Mato's got her arms folded across her chest, and she looks like she isn't sure what to think.

Strength raises her hand.

>Acknowledge her.
>Restate the plan again.
>Threaten them. (With what?)
>Get angry.

Difficult and Impossible are two different things, anon.
The primary difference being that the impossible tends to be impossible.
Going to the moon? Difficult.
Walking to the moon? YOU CAN'T, NO MATTER HOW MANY CRITS YOU ROLL. BECAUSE THAT'S NOW HOW THINGS WORK.

And asking others to do it for you is absolute bullshit.

Luck and sheer force of will can only carry you so far, and making blatantly out-of-character decisions for the sake of a write-in- one so absurd that I had thought was a joke- that was clearly a bad idea, in- and out- of character, is just... I don't even know what it is.
But your will doesn't apply to others.
There was no reason for you to want to steal it.
Still isn't.
Akari doesn't think that way.
Or, at least, she didn't.

>>35479166
>>35479188
Okay, anons, bear with me here.
Let's assume you manage to rip/blast/whatever a hole in this thing.
To reach this hole, you have to climb at least a dozen meters up a gigantic robot's leg, which is covered in two things: jagged edges and smooth surfaces.
Mato is the only one who could even begin to make a reasonable attempt at scaling this.
Strength's gloves' fingers aren't clawed, and her feet are relatively normal, so she wouldn't be able to grab any sort of handhold that might be there.
Chariot has claws, sure, but SHE HAS NO FUCKING FEET.
And Sayaka isn't even augmented- she'd lose fingers if she tried.

And, again, this is assuming you managed to 'make' an entrance in what is essentially a gigantic walking tank, plated in Academy City BS-metal that's probably a titanium alloy at least- meaning it's likely extremely heat-resistant and just about as strong.
>>
>>35479549
Just cast a spell to fly them up there, easy!
>>
>>35479549

Okay, they're lagging behind.

Kyouko seems to be a bit more stereotypically nerdy than you anticipated, and Mami... Mami's having problems you imagine you wouldn't mind having.

Still, it doesn't take you long to get into position, and, after giving Kyouko a few moments to catch her breath, you're ready to go.

Additionally, BURNING GLORY is currently loaded: G, G, Y, Y, O, R

Green= G = nonlethal deterrent
Yellow= Y = stun/KO
Orange= O = lethal
Red= R = overcharge

You've got 6 green-charged (Gs) SONIC rounds, 6 red-charged (Re) ELECTRO rounds; 4 green, 4 yellow, 5 orange, and five red JACK rounds.

If you want to load something else, now's the time.

You guys didn't forget about good ol' BURNING GLORY, did you?

If we really need anything more than that, we're either horrible at aiming or need to kill something.

If we're fighting robot dinosaurs we're gonna need a bit more punch.

I like this loadout, I'd rather have too much power than not enough if we're not facing human targets.

Got it!

Okay, writing!
... are we about to fall off of the board?

Actually I kinda did. I blame all the stupid discussions from yesterday.

Do we have any reason to not horribly murder the dinobots?
If not, then

Sounds good.

I think we're only past the bump limit at the moment, but it couldn't hurt to make a new thread if we still have a lot of stuff ahead of us.
>>
You think on it for a moment, during which you also unload and reload BURNING GLORY with a not-quite-so-gentle arrangement- three yellows, followed by two oranges, and topped off with a red.

Robot-dinosaur things aren't people, after all, so you're probably being generous by even having the yellows in there.

You put the cylinder back into place, fixing it into position with a reassuring CLICK, and slip the weapon back into its holster.

“Can you make it look like there are more of us than there are?”

Mami thinks for a few moments. “I can, yes, but it gets much harder to maintain as the number of fakes increases, and I can't guarantee they'll be very good. I think I could probably make 25 or so, if I didn't have to deal with any distractions, but they'd be... vague... at best.”

Hmm.

Attack the dinos first, then run away, hopefulyl with the dinos tailing them. Whoever stays behind we blast.

21, so there's a 1:3 ratio.

Okay, I think I'm gonna call it here- I'm losing focus, you guys seem to be losing focus, and the thread's gonna burst into flames or something here in a bit.

Thanks for playing, vote in the archives http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Raildex and make babies smile, and feel free to ask questions either here or at the magical place where magical answers are given to silly questions: ask.fm/EsperQuestQM

Thanks for running!
