Part 14

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Hugo of Koblenz, and you have discovered a traitor. Your friend and companion, Orlando of Sidon, has turned on your brother in favour of the king, with promises of wealth and power. Relaying this fact to your other companions has led them to a single conclusion, Orlando must be killed before the trial that will determine your brother's fate.

It is still two weeks until your brother is to be brought forward on charges of conspiracy against the crown, two more weeks until the other lords similarly charged are expected to appear in the Holy City. The king's men have taken to the streets in strength, eyes on anyone suspicious and quick to hammer down on dissent. The king's youngest son from his previous marriage, Elias of Maine, has also arrived in the city hoping to wed the now eligible princess Ioveta.

As your friends bicker over what the best course of action is, you are left with a choice: Side with your friends, or convince them to take a different course of action.

There's enough trouble with the trial, adding fire to it only risk worse consequences and cramping the Queen's plans.

I can't see Hugo siding with them on this issue at this point. I don't feel that passionately about the issue though.
>>

Aye, would understand if Hugo feels conflicted. Orlando betrayed them but he is still trying to save his brother

>>

We should probably not kill Orlando. Make shit suspicious. Besides, all we really agreed to was to protect the roads of the land in order to garner support for the queen, which they only have word of from two power hungry chucklefucks
>>
As your friends argue you clear your throat.

"I don't think we should kill Orlando," you said.

They turn to look at you. Solomon had a deep scowl on his face. Adelheid was currently bandaging up his arm, but even she stopped to stare at you. Now your reasons aren't just because Orlando had been a companion, though that was part of it. "King Fulk is keeping eyes out for trouble, isn't he?" you asked, but you already knew he was. Adelheid confirmed it with a nod. "If Orlando was killed he'd just get even more paranoid, and it would make my brother look extra guilty."

Adelheid finished her work and smoothed her dress. "The boy isn't wrong. Hell, he may just go the next step and have Wilhelm murdered in retribution."

That you had not considered, and it launched a hard spike of panic through your gut.

Solomon didn't like what he was hearing. He took a seat and slouched back, glowering at nothing. "Honour demands Orlando be killed," he spoke the words deep, a lion's rumbling.

Adelheid put a hand to his shoulder. "Perhaps vengeance can be had after the trial," she said, "How ever it may go."

They seemed to see your reasoning, though they still had murderous thoughts. You were fairly certain they would not act on them, for now. You had said you did not want Orlando to be killed, but you didn't quite know your own mind fully. He had been a boon companion through hard days, and you had heard him speak to your brother as if he meant to help him. But still it had been treachery of the most ignoble sort.

You thought on that in privacy later, lying in your bed with sword across your chest, chewing your lip. If killing a friend could spare your brother, would you do it?

You are Wilhelm of Koblenz, and you had been enjoying your stay in the cells of Jerusalem. The Tower of David, part fortress and part palace, had been a hospitable place so far. A tasteless pottage for breakfast and dinner. Itchy straw to sleep on. The finest rags to wear and all the best rats for company. It made the bishop's residence in Trier look like a stable in comparison.

Your guards spoke only French, at least they only spoke French to you. So you did not suffer dull conversation.

How did you spend most of your time?

> composing music, to keep your mind active

yeah actually that sounds better
>>
>>35485295
> physical exercise, you used what room you could to stay active
>>
You spend your days with music on your mind, and on your tongue. Singing songs that you knew, and then ones of your own creation. You kept with you a spoon you used to make notation on the walls. You thought you'd make a fine melody at one point, but you were never quite satisfied with it. If only you had a harp, or some other instrument on hand.

Much of its content seemed to waft between scenes of betrayal, and thoughts of a young princess. A tragedy, you thought. But that really came down to how it ended. And the end of it was not written yet.

You had infrequent guests at this time. Orlando, who tried to speak to you about 'reason' was the most common. But all you heard in his voice was the double edge of a man trying to justify himself. Occasionally a woman would come and look in on you, a palace servant. You did not know her and she would not speak with you.

Mostly, you were alone. Your arm healed fully, but you were not sure it healed well.

A lesser man might have been driven to despair by such surroundings. You were not.

Not yet.

How long you had been locked up you could not say, but today you had a different visitor.

"Excuse me," you heard her voice and for a second thought it was a fading part of your dream. A bolt slid, and you saw a pair of large blue eyes fill the slot. You saw her golden brown knot with worry, and a small hand reach through the bars.

"Wilhelm," Ioveta said, reaching toward you. You came to the door, and the hand found your face.

Your time a captive had left you with a small shaggy beard and hair grown long and shaggy to match. Yet her hand was not troubled by the bristles.

"Ioveta," you said, the first real smile you'd had in weeks cracking your face.

She drew her hand back and gripped the bars. She was standing on the guard's stool, the guard himself having gone for a walk. She did not seem overly upset, her expression was very steady. Behind her was that woman, the palace servant. She seemed very much like Ioveta in her features, a curious thing.

"I brought you something," she said, drawing out a peach. She took a bite and offered it to you. There was a strange tremble in her hand.

Real fruit, your stomach groaned for it.

You took a bite of the fruit, the juices washing down from your lips and into your beard. You ate it to the pit, and tossed the seed aside. Ioveta brushed your hair back behind your ear, it really was getting long.

"I have something else," she said, and produced a skin. She took a sip, a white wine, whipped her lips and then held it up for you to drink.

The woman shifted uncomfortably as she watched.

You hold a hand up and she blinks.

"No," you said, "What is wrong, what are you doing?"

Ioveta drew away from the door, her lip trambling and expression suddenly very fragile. The woman behind her stepped forward with a terrible expression, like the thunderhead of a storm cloud she drew toward the door and toward you, finger struck out.

"Salaud! Ma sœur se jette sur vous!" she spits hot words in her French tongue, her bosom heaving. If she could gut you with a look, she would have. "You ignorant savage!" she slapped the bars hard.

You were lost in all this, but could see Ioveta standing awkwardly a step away, wine skin still clutched in her hands.

"What is going on?" you asked.

"Hod..." Ioveta said, her voice very small, but the woman had a flick of her wrist and a hard word in French for her, before she was back on you.

"It is the tradition," the woman said, "And you should thank god I love my sister enough to help her. Drink the wine, and you will be betrothed. And I will stand with you should anyone speak against it." The woman scowled and spat. "Though now I think I'm twice a fool for doing so."

Ioveta steps forward again, step soft and expression shy, and holds up for you the wine skin. You reach through the bars as far as you are able. She stands up on the stool again, holds the skin up for you. The wine runs over your tongue, down your throat. Its a dry vintage, but its the sweetest thing you'd had. Two thick gulps and it was done. She reached a trembling hand through the bars, taking you either side of the head, and pushed her own against the bars.

"In the eyes of witnesses, I say this, that Wilhelm of Koblenz is to be my husband, and that I am to be his wife. In the fullness of time and under the eyes of God, we shall be wed," she kissed her hand and pressed it to your lips, as close as to a kiss as she could manage.

You kissed her delicate palm, you grabbed it and pulled it against your face, kissing the wrist. Her fingers danced across your face and she laughed a little.

Was this a last mercy to a doomed man, you wondered?

"In my land I would give you a ring and sandals," you said, "And a kiss." You kissed her hand again.

"This is not your land," the woman said, "This is Jerusalem." But she sighed and gave a tight smile. "I hope this is not a mistake. If you are half as good in nature as your brother, my sister is lucky. If you are a scoundrel, well. The Queen, the Patriarch and half the bachelors of the world will be happy to correct this mistake."

But she leaned forward and kissed Ioveta on the cheek, and Ioveta blushed brightly, eyes still on you.

"He will be my husband," she said, "Or no one." And she drew her hand away, tugging one last time at your beard.

They could not stay, the steps of the guard returning could be heard. As she left you watched, and felt a keen yearning in your gut.

> You are Hugo of Koblenz

"Raiders on the road," the word has gone out, Maggie brought word from her meeting with Sir Raymond. A band of traveling pilgrims caught out on the Road to Galilee. A muster has been called for, for all available men to gather and ride out at once. Spied from the top of David's Tower, it was counted a startling force. Fulk himself would be riding, with any bold enough to join him.

"Are they Egyptian or Turk?" Solomon asked.

"Turk," Maggie said, and she was bent double from running to bring the news, "But what difference is it? They are all Saracens, and in need of killin'."

Solomon eyed you up, hefting a spear. "Care to kill a few Turks, brother?" he asked.

To ride with he king has some advantages, a chance to see the man in action. But if he is gone from the city and the palace, all better to move freely. It made sense to stay.

Still, you felt an itch under your knuckle, a swelling of the heart and pumping of the blood. To ride out on the charge and spit a Turk on your spear. And to save Christian brothers in peril, was there a more just deed?

>>35487152

We get thrown into duels where they aren't honorable challenges so much as an enemy champion comes at you in the battlefield. I don't see anything wrong with blocking to survive if you are overmatched at the time.

Welf got killed in a melee. If an enemy champion just comes right at you it really isn't a proper duel. More like a 1v1. But the main point is that we always charge into the melee no matter what so far. If we actually stop doing that or disengage after a charge I think we would be fine.

>>
You would not be counted as one meek of heart. Solomon hands you a spear.

"We ride out," You said, chin struck out boldly. Solomon laughed and clapped you on the back as he pulled on his helm.

It was as you pulled on your gambeson that the Lady Helena slipped by you.

"Off to war?" she asked. You nodded. She leaned in and kissed you upon the forehead. "Well, God guard you," and she walked toward the chapel with a smile. You pulled on your helm, hot under the collar as you watched the Swedish woman walk away.

Tancred was a foot soldier and would not be joining you, but Solomon had his horse and yours ready to ride. He also had for a you a maille shirt.

"Let us not have another scar for one so young," he said as you pulled it on.

You climbed into the saddle. The two of you rode toward the Gate of St Stephen.

A muster yard had formed. Templars and Hospitallers were both in good numbers, but also a pair of leper knights with the green cross of Lazarus were riding. Secular knights, in good armour and bad, were also in evidence. A number of fifty odd soldiers on horseback, ready to ride out.

And at their head was King Fulk, in a hauberk and norman helm, a sword with a long blade in hand, directing men into divisions.

"Elias will take the left flank," he said, directing his son, "And Sir Blaise the other. I will form the center. We must be swift if these people have any hope of surviving. The Turks are hot on them." He had the voice of a croaking toad in a summer storm, cracked but clearly heard over the din. The men were organising quick. Fulk did not look happy. He sat his horse like a heavy block, shoulders sagged and eyes drawn in. When he opened his mouth his lips curled as if he had something caught at the back of his throat.

"Spare none of them!" he said.

You both join the center, and King Fulk notes the two of you.

"Well met Nubian," he said, offering Solomon his hand. It was a quick grip. Then his eyes fell on you and he smiled. "Young to be in battle, but war makes no distinction of young or old," he offered you his hand as well, though you were loath to take it. He did not try to impress you with his strength, just a firm squeeze, but he was strong. He had sheathed his sword, a squire handing up first his spear, than his crowned helm.

"Jerusalem!" he raised his spear. Then he pointed it to the high tower of David. "Jerusalem!" he said, and you heard a strange tightness in his voice.

"Jerusalem!" Elias roared, "Jerusalem and Anjou!"

Sours were put to flanks and you were out the gate in a stream of whooping men and horse flesh. You rode with Solomon and the king, the two leper knights and ten knights of mixed background, Aquitaine. Maine and Angevin, as well as a lonely Englishman.

Blaise split off with the Templas in his wing, and Elias with other secular knights. Each had their own war cry, making a heady mess of language and words.

Fulk remained silent, just grunting as he concentrated on the road ahead. He rode as such for hours, it was past mid-day when the raiders were finally in striking distance.
>>
It was a familiar stamping dust storm that declared the enemy. The darts and whistles, clattering bells. You heard pilgrims scream, 'Jesus Christ!' as the Saracen made the Holy Land a hell for them. Some that had come armed had already been killed, stuck with arrows and flung javelins. More were being roped up. This was a slave raid.

"They'll not hold long," Fulk said, "The Turk hasn't the guts for standing his ground. They'll spin away. Keep your shields up. My son should catch them on the left, or Blaise on the right."

It was true enough, as they came down on the raiders they broke from their looting like a swarming of angry bees, breaking off left and right to cut away, fling and shooting toward you. It made it so as you could not get clear numbers, and the shouting of the Saracen mixed with the cries of the pilgrims that you could not tell one from the other.

A dart bounced off your helm as you came in. You pressed in close beside Solomon.

You sighted a Turk down the shaft of your lance. Gritting your teeth and spurring your horse, it struck the man in the gap 'tween his mail and his chin, punching through. He struck a dumb expression as he slumped back, and you drew the spear out with a slick fleshy noise. Solomon was cheek to jowl with the king, catching their own flying game.

You spied a Turk to full with a woman across his saddle horn to fight, and charged t'word him. He could not bring lance or scimitar to bear before you struck him a bloody hole through his face.

You saw one of the leper knights of Lazarus fall under a string of thrown darts, his shield and horse heavy with them as he used his form as shield for two cowering children in an over turned cart. Two darts struck his chest, buried deep, then a javelin through his leg and finally his head and neck. His fell a porcupine, his horse a screaming mass of dying thing, rattling out in a stamping horror.

The Turks pushed in to take the other knight of Lazarus, but the Angevines came and pressed them back.

They were peeling away, trying to keep ahead, a frustrating distance just outside of striking range, but pushed back from the pilgrims.

A Turk threw a javelin overhand and it struck the top of your helm, dazing you but skidding away.

He readied another with a laugh, but his laugh was cut short by Blaise's axe. His head lopped in half like an egg.

"Deus Vult!" the Templars made work of the Turks they caught, but did not catch all, and Elias's men were not fast enough to finish the job.

Fulk heaved in the settling dust, sword washed with gore, spear broken in his other hand.

"Victory!" Elias called, spear raised.
>>

>inb4 Fulk dies
>>
Fulk threw down his broken spar and gave a satisfied sigh, eyes half closed. And when he saw you he grinned, saluted you with his sword.

The men were dismounting, to check for loot and downed companions. Some checked the pilgrims. Some, not many. One knight, the Englishman, took a frightened girl with torn up clothing 'round the shoulder and pulled her close in a way you disliked. Others, the French, were beginning to crack out wine skins and exchange victory toasts.

"There are still more Turks!" Blaise roared, pointing after the fleeing men, "We should be after them. Find their camp, they sure as shit have one close by." The knights all looked to him with irritated glares as they cut free gold rings from around dead fingers, and pulled out jeweled earrings as well.

"Turks move quick, better to catch the wind," the surviving leper knight said. He was off his horse and beside his dead fellow, cradling him in his arms.

"If we had a good scout, we may find them," Elias suggested, "These attacks will not stop until they are rooted out."

"My son is not wrong," Fulk said, "But neither is Sir Wolfgang. The Turks move damned quick."

"I've a quick horse, and used to scouting," you said, putting yourself forward. Some smiled at your youthful appearance, but others frowned and looked to the king.

Fulk frowned too. "A child sent alone does not sit well with me," he said, and nodded, "Who here is brave enough to go with him? Which knight here can match this boy's valour?" He smiled, and all the men called to come, dropping what they had been doing.

"Quickly now, quickly," Blaise urged.

It was five that went to scout. You, Solomon, the leper Wolfgang, Sir Blaise and the English knight Sir Matthew.

"Loose an arrow," Fulk said to Solomon, "And we shall ride like hell."

Sir Blaise was given command. He peered at you and Solomon suspiciously at first, but then shrugged. "Let's be off," he said, heeling his horse forward.

You were the scout of the scouts, given the very tip of the spear and ranged ahead on your hobby.

You take a path over hard rocks and up a slope that only your tough little horse could take. It whickered under you as you laboured up the slope, and you took a rest. The others were long in your shadow, watching you work.

You drank a little and watered your horse some too, wetting its neck and patting it down. It was a good horse.

You set back to it, up the uneven terrain. A horse unfamiliar with this area might balk as rocks skittered by, but you were steady and your horse kept steady too. When you were at a good vantage you spied the terrain. You thought you saw a distant glimmer, sun on metal, not a natural thing. You spat and took another drink. It was warm, and the sun baked you dark. You pointed with your spear so your companions could see, and started in that direction.

The Turks were still in flight, coming into a high built camp. Men, but women as well. Camp followers in veils that saw to the business of the camp. Maybe slaves, maybe wives or sisters, you didn't know. You crouched and watched as the warriors set to flight returned.

There were captured people among them, young people, men and women kept roped like horses near the center of the camp.

Already they were making as if to break camp. The Turks did move fast. But they were slowed some by womenfolk and ill gotten treasures, with not enough soldiers left to carry them all.

An attack would need to come very quickly, or they would disappear into the desert. They would need to be stalled some how.

You gesture with your spear from your vantage point, unseen by the Turks. Solomon looses an arrow.

The camp was in disarray, as soldiers argued about which thing to take and which to abandon. It was when they went to their prisoners, and started to draw out the very young you started to worry. A young girl was forced to her knees as a sword was drawn. She started to sob, and a horrified shudder went up among the other prisoners.

Your gut turned. You picked up a rock and threw it overhand down at the swordsman. It bounced of his helmet and he looked up, startled.

He dropped his sword and pulled up his bow, as did the others.

You swung up in the saddle. A shaft struck your horse in the thick hind of its thigh, but you whooped as you charged down the slope, a slim figure pressed to your horses back, spear held forth. An arrow struck into your shoulder, caught on chain and padded vest both, as did another on your gut.

You crashed down into the camp. Men sped for horses and women scattered around you. You screamed something as your spear tip lashed out. The words were lost to you. You used the spear more as a crude bat, swinging at men that tried to raise bows and keeping back men with ropes and spears of their own.

But you could not keep some from mounting. You caught a blow across the back that almost knocked your spear from your hand. You rounded, your horse cross stepped and dancing. They had you ringed.
>>
>>35489547

So call me maybe
>>
But you were not alone. Four other riders came up a path. Solomon with spear and Blaise with axe, the leper-knight giving a cry and Sir Matthew brandishing his sword. "Hallelujah!" Sir Wolfgang called, "Hallelujah!"

Spears crossed and Turks started to fall. You were given gap enough to slip back to your companions. The Turks tried to break and pit you again with darts and arrows, but the band was too close to give them the range.

Still, a good number of Turks escaped, abandoning their dying companions, loot and women.

You panted, pulled the arrow from your shoulder. No blood, but a hard bruise was forming.

The others dismounted. King Fulk's men were coming up quick, but not quick enough to catch the disappearing Turks.

Sir Matthew threw down his sword and grabbed one of the Turk women, ripping off a viel to show a pretty face. He grabbed at her, pulling at her clothes. Other knights were soon upon the other abandoned women, ripping off their all enveloping dress to expose them up to the hot sun.

Sir Matthew pushed the woman he had into the bushes, a couple of Maine knights crowding around him, cheering him on as he lifted his male, holding her in place with a mailled fist.

Some had the decency to at least ignore it. The holy knights were seeing to the prisoners, led by Sir Wolfgang and Sir Blaise. They raised no protest, but kept to their work.

You break through the ring of hooting men. Sir Matthew had his tongue half out as he grunted, thrusting hard. The woman just lay staring, eyes wide and up at the sky. You felt a weird twist in your loins as you saw her bare chest rock to every pig-grunt thrust of the English knight. Then a hot flash of rage.

You crack the butt of your spear across the knight's face.

He came up with a curse, drawing his sword. "You little cocksucker!" he screamed, spitting out a chip of his tooth. His fellows form around him, glaring at you, reaching for their own weapons. "You want a woman, go grab your own!" he said, pointing to some of the other captured Turks.

"What's this?" Prince Elias came up beside you, spear across his shoulders, "Are we set to fighting each other already?" He looked down on you and shook his head. "Attacking a companion, little monk?" he asked, and you went cold to be noted as such by him, but he winked and looked back to Sir Matthew. "I think our friend was disgusted by your action. I must admit, he is not the only one," and then he brought a boot up and kicked Matthew back again.

The knight did not dare raise arms against the Prince.

Solomon was at your other side, face tight.

"Is this how you treat a knight in service?" Matthew asked, and many of the other knights roared in agreement, arms born forth.

King Fulk brought his weight to bear, coming between the two groups. "What is this?" he asked, ignoring the bleeding young woman who still lay prone on the ground.

"The Englishman has done you a disgrace father," Elias said, "What is the punishment for rape, castration?" Sir Matthew balked.

Sir Matthew's companions roared with outrage.

"If I castrated every raper in my service I'd have a legion of castrati," King Fulk said, but then his gaze fell to you. "But if it sits so poorly on you that you cannot bear to see him walk unpunished, you may fight over the matter," he said, "To the yield, or to death, and let that settle for justice."

"An honour duel!" Elias grinned and clapped your shoulder. Sir Matthew seemed ready to settle it with blood, discarding his sword to take up an offered spear. He spat in your direction. Solomon offered you the use of his shield.

"A fight," the Englishman said, "This is not a fight. This is murder."

"Beware this little terrier, he has a nasty bite," Elias said this with a wink for you. Solomon massaged your shoulders but said nothing, eyes only for your opponent. A ring was forming of bored knights keen to keep the edge brought on from combat going. If a rape was not in the offing, a fight would do.

King Fulk took a knee to watch, and Elias went to stand with his father.

Sir Matthew was not a big man, but he still had a head on you.

I think his suggestion is that we should only do half the passes, see the results, then decide how things should go from there.

For example, if we got absolutely pulped in the first half, we might decide to spam block to preserve our life.

Hugo 74 HP
Matthew 79 Hp

The two of you meet with little thought of defense, and you are soon driven on the back foot. Matthew is no juggernaut, but he is a grown man and experienced knight. He takes the initiative, and presses you back, ringing blows off your helm, and scouring the chains over your arms. He strikes a bloody welt on your calf and you hiss, near taking a knee, but keep your feet and manage a few solid strikes in returns. Sir Matthew did not have his murder, and when you break you do so warily, spear tips darting out, eyes flicking nervously at each other.

He had the better of you for now, but he did not have your full measure.

You heard the Turkish woman moan in pain as she was taken up by a hospitaller. Solomon sits forward in concern.

"You can take him brother," he said.

But most of the crowd was roaring Matthew's favour.

"When I'm done here," the Englishman said, "I'll find what women you have and give them the news. That you died a fool over a heathen's virtue. Then I'll have their virtue too." You had two half-sisters, virgin girls of ten and twelve. And your mother too, tucked away working a kitchen in Koblenz. The thought of Sir Matthew doing unto them as he had the Turk...

Hugo 68
Matthew 47

You throw yourself back in with a roar, spear point flashing through his guard and gouging across his face. Matthew backs up and beats the tip aside, striking you across the helm. You match blows with the next cross but knock a tooth from his skull while his only glances from the rim of your shield.

He screams and drives his spear fast, you bring your shield up, and the point catches in. With a pull of your forearm you draw it from his fingers and score a thrust to his bare chest, once, twice, thrice.

He clutches a bloody hole in his shoulder. One of his fellows throws him his sword, as Solomon pries Matthew's spear from your shield.

Matthew was wounded, but you were tiring as well.

He leveled his sword and snarls through bloody teeth. He is not giving up the ground to you, a boy half his age.

Fulk leans forward, and Elias has eyes wide with excitement. The Turkish woman cries. This would be the last pass.

Hugo 51
Matthew 36

You come in but he closes too fast and cuts you 'round the head. You bring your shield up to get back your distance, and manage another blow to his stomach that staggered him back. He came up with an upswing as you came down, catching him in the shoulder while his sword edge crunched against your armoured hip. You gasped in pain as you staggered back, but Matthew crumpled under the haft of your spear howling in pain, grabbing at his shoulder.

You staggered to a knee, but Solomon caught you before you could collapse.

You grinned up at him and he grinned up at you.

"Sir Matthew cannot stand," Prince Elias said, "The matter is settled." Sir Matthew could not stand, in fact he was curled into a shivering ball, clutching his body in agony. You felt a savage joy at seeing your foe so humbled. Some men took him up between them, and you saw his face was pale and running with sweat.

King Fulk came over and took you by the shoulder. "You fought well for one so young, both here and on the field," he said, "Give me your name, so I might honour you. You will be my guest tonight, and eat at my table."

Actually, the answer is simple. Everyone fucking jumped on the Iovetta train like a bunch of retards instead of playing it slow and getting her as a patron, then having more adventures.

Yeah, it's not like the king is a bad guy, his subjects just want him to improve. In fact, we should make the argument that the covenant was an oath to strengthen the state and restore order to the Holy Land.
>>
"Hugo," you said, standing on your own two feet. You winced as did so, a slight pain running up the side of your hip, "Of Koblenz. Son of Sir Wilhelm of Koblenz, knight in service of Albero of Trier."

Fulk's brow furrowed. "I have a knight in my dungeon by that name," he said.

"He is my brother," you replied, "And I am his squire." You stood your spear beside you, thrust out your chin.

Fulk grinned. "The balls on you!" and he clapped your shoulder with a deep laugh, "Let my invitation stand. You have my table. No, you have the freedom of the palace. Ha!" He shook with laughter, a broad grin splitting his barrel face, tears spilling from his cheeks.

He drew you into a hug. "If I had a dozen young men like you, a son so bold, how the Saracens would tremble," and he hauled you off your feet like a child, put you on his broad shoulder. "Hail Hugo! Hail!"

The knights cheered, some with confusion, but Solomon laughed and whistled.

You saw Prince Elias cheer as well, but a sour shadow crossed his face as the king bore you aloft. The cheer washed over you and you burned bright under it. You held your spear up and said the first thing that spring to mind.

"Fulk!" you said, "Fulk and Jerusalem!"

Fulk! Fulk! Fulk!

The cheer echoed off the hills.

(Matilda is one of my top five medieval women, yes I keep a list)

In case you all missed it, Sabeen's mother is a Zanj slave. Meaning possibly from Zanzibar or Madagascar.

Full plate is made to counter crossbow and early handcannon

What type of helmet does Wilhelm have? I think I remember us getting a full helm in one of the quests but I don't think it was clarified what type it was.

I had a surprisingly hard time finding images of Turks and Egyptians from this era that were credible.

This is one of the better ones.

A lot of material on the Middle East is more concerned with the Ottoman Empire or just Saladin, who had slightly different arms and armour than what I'm going for.

On Matilda with more of a face plate (I said it was an enclosed helm and an anon pointed out it was at least fifty years too early for that. He was right, I was being a bit a-historical just for the sake of an extended equipment list.)

A hauberk, which is pretty much just a better articulated and thicker maille shirt, and lamellar.

It's maille, down to the wrists, maybe hands. knee or lower. Those who can't into mail get gambesons.
>>

Komeni lamellar.

A bit similar to old school Roman armour, usually meant for cavalry. There's some debate about whether or not legs and arms were covered extensively too.

The movie 'Kingdom of Heaven' actually does a decent job with period accurate armour, though some of the weapons are wrong (they have longswords a couple centuries too early) and I won't comment on the actual martial arts and tactics displayed.

It's a bit too washed out colour wise though. People liked bright colours back then.

Closer to the Norman conquest, but the difference in armour between the 11th century and early 12th are pretty slim.

It's a transnational period, called a Renaissance for a reason.

Finding arms and armour is actually fairly easy.

Hard, is civilian dress. Particularly on attractive people.

Not knocking the guys and gals who do re-enactment, but when you want to envision a pretty or beautiful girl, its hard to find it and accuracy at the same time.

I'd like to read more about women in the period. We found out they had bras a couple years back in I think the 14th century in Hungary. Made from wool, so that's why there was only the one surviving example. So much material ages so poorly, you'd be surprised how much we 'know' is based on broken up fragments and second-hand sources.

Nope. This is my first quest.

Though reading the other Crusader Quests in the archive and not liking them very much may have inspired putting this together as much as Raian's Three Kingdoms.

What other quests have you read and enjoyed? (Or hated)
>>
>>35494006
I don't really follow many quests.

I got burned out a while ago. Used to read Nobleman Quest by that Chinese-English guy. Maverick Hunter Quest. Three Kingdoms, since its dead now.

I do follow one other quest that's still active but probably shouldn't say what it is, to preserve my dignity.

I like the idea of most quests more than I like them as they are. Stuff like PGQ and Joker Quest are appealing, but were too dense for me to get into by the time I discovered them.

I jumped in and enjoyed a bunch of stuff that never got off the ground though. This one mech-quest way back when based on Front Mission, and a few others.

All dead now. Hopefully something interesting pops up soon.

Strato/Alto? He still runs a few quests on anonkun. His psuedo-Song dynasty quest is a pretty interesting read.
