"Maedaaa.. Why did you pull us out of class?" Aiko says; showing off a mighty yawn.
"You just use homeroom to sleep, Aiko." Maeda says, as she shuffles through her bookbag.

When she puts it this way, I can't help but wonder why they bother going to homeroom at all.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and last night I found out some things about a friend of mine. Like she's been spying on the student council, and that she's been trying to frame me for doing it, and that she wasn't even named 'Kaori' at all-

Wait, no, forget that last part. She's still named 'Kaori'. She just doesn't know it yet.

But still, it really worries me. She said that she wishes that she had a home and a loving family, but refused to elaborate as to why working for Fortune was so important to her. She instead chose to disappear before I could say anything else or try to understand where she was going. I think I have an idea as to where she's going to go, but it's a long shot.

"Something happened to Kaori last night, and that's why she's not here today. Can you tell us what happened, Masami?" Maeda says, with a sudden look of seriousness in her eye.

>Everything.
>"Kaori was evil all along and she's not even named Kaori and she ran away-and I don't know where to find her-and oh god what do I even do-is this really my fault?"
>"I think Kaori might be my sister, it's a long story. Can we speed this up?"
>"Kaori ran away, and I need to go get her back. It's a family matter."
>"She went home, to her creepy home, plus the chairman of Fortune is her father."
>"I-I don't know. I think she was kidnapped."

"Kaori came over to my house last night, she was expecting to find out some answers about her family life from my Mom. I think some of the things she told me caused her to get really scared or embarrassed."

Maeda looks confused, "Kaori talked to you about her family? She hasn't told me anything about her family, ever. What are they like?"
"Not good, they're not good people." I say with sadness.

Now everyone looks concerned.

"It's just- She's working for Fortune."
There's a light gasp from the table as I continue,
"-And I think she's being bullied by her family to work for them. She told me that she couldn't keep hiding from them any longer, and when I woke up, she was gone."

Everyone at the table shares the same look of shock. Aiko and Ryouta start texting someone from their phones, Maeda slowly sits down into one of the chairs and lays her head onto the table.

"This is my fault, isn't it?" Maeda says, muffled through the table.
"Huh? How is this your fault?" I ask.

"She tried to tell me about her family a long time ago, and I didn't listen. I didn't do anything to help her in her time of need. And now she's gone forever."

"No! She is not gone forever!" I snap back at her, getting the attention of everyone at the table.
"What do you mean?" Maeda says, lazily turning her head to face me.
"She thought that Mom was her mother. This is a family matter for me now, and I'm going to go get her!"

This causes the looks of shock to turn into concern.

Maeda raises her head, and I can see a single tear rolling from her cheek,
"Masami, I know you're upset right now, but if she's going back to her family, you can't just take her away from them. Even if they are bad parents, that's still a decision that you can't make for her."

>"The hell I can't!"
>"She's been brainwashed! She shouldn't be there any longer!"

>"I think she's my sister! So she's as much my family as she is theirs!"

So, plan. We acquire cards from Fortune for drafting, call it a home project. We draft them into something that can level buildings. The others draw Kaori away from Fortune so she doesn't get caught in the crossfire. We level the building down to the ground. Somewhere along the line we profit as any place where they could force us or anyone else to work on whatever their evil plan is is completely destroyed.

I mean, the employees are all card monsters anyway, they'll survive or leave cards behind in the rubble.

Our draft speed is pretty ridiculous, though. All the student council has to do is claim they heard the story, demand an explanation or otherwise engage the now "evil" masked girl away from the building, and then we fire a magic artillery cannon or something at the place. Getting the cards should be easy as well, we'll just pretend we're working off a quota so we can have days off to spend with mom or something.

And then we Kiritsugu them. I'd suggest just bombing the foundation with explosives, but finding a way to get to that position would be too time-consuming.

"What do you mean, 'I can't'?" I say, with some indignation thrown in for good measure.
"I mean you can't Masami, like it or not, that's Kaori's family and it's her decision if she wants to go back to them."

What kind of attitude is that?!

"No, you don't understand! She's been brainwashed! She can't stay with people who treat her like some kind of tool!"
"Brainwashed or not, you can't make that decision for her or her family. I'm sorry Masami, but she's-"
"BUT I'M HER FAMILY TOO!"

"What!?" Aiko says, still sputtering from shock.

"I'm her family too! She told me last night that she's the same way I am, that means she's probably my Sister or something!"
At least, I think that's how it works.

"That's..." Aiko says, now she's beginning to look sad.
Without another word, Aiko stands to her feet and slams her palm onto the table.
"I'LL COME WITH YOU! I know where she lives! We can go get her back!" She says defiantly.

Maeda looks increasingly confused,
"Aiko, didn't you just hear me? We can't get her back, that's-"
"I changed my mind, Masami is her sister, right? That means she has a say in what happens, too."
"..Aiko, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way."

Ryouta stands up, clearing his throat.
"I agree with Sis that going and getting her is probably the legally wrong thing to do. But I quit caring about that when we went to Fortune's HQ and started beating things up. So wherever you decide to go, I'm going with you."

Maeda now looks frustrated. She sits back and down and searches around the table.
"You guys really know how to put me on the spot.." She says, with a sigh.
"Then if you're all going, then I guess I have to go too."

She looks back at me, "So, what is your plan besides 'Go to her house and kidnap her'?"

"Mom is going to find out what she can about Kaori. After that, I was going to go to her house and try to talk it over with her. All she really needs is someone to talk to about this!"
"Masami, didn't you try talking to her about this last night? Isn't this how all of this happened?" Maeda says, resting her face against her hand.

She has a point, but I'm not going to let that get me down.

"That doesn't count! She didn't let me talk to her at all. I need to let her know that there's other places she can go and that her friends still trust her!"

They all look back and forth at one another.
Aiko speaks up, "Um, in case that doesn't work, what were you going to do then?"

I don't really know how to answer.
"Uh, if it doesn't work then I'll.. Um.. Take her home anyway?"

Maeda slaps her forehead. Aiko only giggles softly.

My phone vibrates in my pocket. I take it out and realize that it's a text message from Mom.
"I found Magician, she was grounded at her home for life. I'll talk with her father about it - Mom"

I tap the little tile in my phone that hold Mom's number. A few rings later, I can hear her pick up.
“(Sweetie? Did you need something?)”
“I wanted to know if you found anything else out about Magician.”

There's some commotion in the background before she responds in a normal tone of voice.
“Okay, It's safe now. What was it you were wanting to know?”

Oh, well I didn't really think this far ahead.
“Um, Mom, did you speak with her dad? What did he say?”
“Not yet, but the chairman usually doesn't say much of anything. I'll let you know what he says about her. Do you know anything about her powers? Why is she working for Fortune?”

Great. A question that I would like to know myself.

“She has the ability to see into the future! She was using it to tell people's fortunes.”
Mom is silent on the other side of the line,
“..Are you sure that was it?”
“Pretty sure! She told my fortune and everything.”

Mom is pondering on the other side, before she breaks the silence once more,
“..Masami, you can't tell the future using magic. The future hasn't happened yet.”

..What?

“But- She was, Are you sure?”
“I'm pretty sure!” She says, with a confused tone of voice. “That was something that they've been trying for years and they never got right.”

So Kaori can't see the future? But I saw her use her cards to tell the future. Maybe-
“Mom, she really could though! I mean. I think she could.”

“I'll keep looking into it, maybe there's something else to it that I don't know. I'll talk to you about it after school, sweetie.”
“Thanks Mom, Bye.”

She still thinks I'm going to school after that.

I walk back to the Student Council. Maeda speaks up as I approach.
“Masami, There's a way we can get in without having to deal with the dogs out front.”

“Great! Let's go!” I say, with a big goofy smile.
“..You're not going to ask about it?”
“Nope! Just having a plan is good enough for me!”

Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think Kaori can predict the future.

For one, the whole prediction where she said the other member of our family would like to talk to us, they could have told her to say that.

As for how everyone's future holding disaster since we arrived, that's her trying to turn the others against us

Kaori apparently lives quite a way from the school. Even with hopping on the subway and taking several detours, it still takes us almost an hour to get there. Maybe Kaori started living at the school originally so she didn't have to walk all this way.

We turn on the corner of a deserted streetcorner to face what looks like a dead end. The street slowly starts to break away to a dusty path that looks like that no person has used them in a very, very long time.

We push the overgrown bushes and tree branches out of the way. Slowly beginning to open the path to where the visage of a large, menacing building can be seen in the backdrop of the surrounding wood.

Even though it's broad daylight outside, her house still manages to cast a very ominous shadow that makes it appear as if it's dark.

“(This is it, keep your voice down!)” Aiko says, clearly watching her step as she walks through the overgrown grass and the brush.
“(Why?)” I ask back.
“(She has dogs! Huge dogs! Don't let them hear you! We're going to the other side and seeing if her cellar is unlocked.)”

“(Hold it, first-)”

The best way to ascertain the validity of a fortune teller is to have a very specific fortune cash in, preferably more than one. A lot of what the readings have is open to interpretation, an be thought of several different ways or is just plain mentalist tricks like shotgunning and cold reads. A cursory archive walk makes me think Kaori's predictions mostly fall in the "vague enough to almost always be true" category.

That said, she did have that card reader on her wrist - clearly Fortune's got access to more tech than is being let on. They very easily COULD had a lead on a Future Perfect program, but I've not seen enough evidence to make me think Kaori had access to it

“Better idea! I got just the thing to get us inside!” I say, I'm feeling pretty confident about this whole thing!

I reach into my pocket and take out Cirrus. With a flick of my wrist, I can feel it wash over me.
And then I lose a little bit of that confidence, I forgot to do something about the skirt. Ryouta is standing right there, too.

It's not like it matters! I just got to get everyone inside.

The others start examining this dress. I don't think I ever bothered to show this one to them.
“Ooh! A new outfit that I haven't seen yet!” Aiko says, doing that thing again where she rotates around me and pokes and prods the cloth and folds of the dress.

“This one can jump really far. So maybe if I pick everyone up one at a time, we can all get onto the roof. Then we can just walk right in!”

The others don't look too sure about it, but Aiko seems convinced enough with the plan as she hops onto my back. I can feel her legs wrap around my waist.
“Okay! I'll go first!”

I'm glad someone is excited about it! I start to circle around the house as I try to find a good place to land on the roof. And over on the side, I can see a place where the roof is angled downward, but ends on a flat plane up top. I could make that easily.

I turn to the others as I remember something kind of important.
“Um. Ryouta” I say, blushing slightly, “You're going to have to go last, and could you also not look?”
“Not look? Uh.. Okay.” He says, completely confused to my request.

Sure enough, on the last landing with Ryouta my skirt flips up. It's a good thing I told him to go last and to not look while I was jumping with him.

That is so annoying, I need to ask Mom how to fix that.

We're standing on a completely flat roof lined with tar-paper. Gargoyles line the edge of the roof and overlook into the courtyard. Across from us, there's a trap-door hatch that appears to lead inside.

Which is perfect! I don't think anyone has seen us yet. If Kaori lives on the top floor, then we're almost to her room!

Or maybe we don't even need to wait that long. Ahead of us, the trap-door on the roof swings open. A pool of blonde hair spills out.
And Kaori peeks out onto the roof. She shows the top half of her body.

Maeda looks like she wants to run and hug her, I can feel myself wanting to do the same.
“GO AWAY! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!”
Until she yelled that, now I'm not so sure.

Maeda looks like she's about to burst into tears as she pleads with her,
“Kaori! Please! Who you are doesn't matter to us, we wan-”
“My name isn't Kaori!”

This causes Maeda to stop in her tracks. Everyone else only looks on in shock.
I'm not having any of this again, I know what her name is.
“YES IT IS! STOP SAYING THAT IT ISN'T!” I yell at her. She's going to learn to love that name whether she likes it or not.

“Why didn't you tell them Masami? MY NAME IS MAGICIAN! KAORI NEVER EXISTED! Kaori was someone I made up to hurt you! Why did you even come here!?”
She's trying to hide it, but I can tell from seeing the rest of her face that she's been crying a whole bunch. Her beautiful eyes still show the hints of tears and the puffiness of her face.

Ryouta speaks up in his calm and professional demeanor,
“Hold on, we don't care if you call yourself Kaori, Magician, or Rumpelstiltskin. You're still the same person that we will always know as our friend.”

Thank you Ryouta, I'm glad at least one of us can remain composed enough to give a good speech. Us girls here are almost on the brink of tears. I can tell Maeda has lost the will to say anything, and Aiko only continues to grip at my shoulder and stare worriedly at something. Why is she acting so scared all of the sudden?

“Your 'friend'?” She says, disbelief dripping from her voice. “Get a clue you musclehead, I was never your friend, I am a fraud and a liar that used you to get close to the school and your friends! I'm the reason monsters were attacking at all! If you came here because you wanted to see Kaori, then I have to tell you that you'll only find me here, and I AM NOT KAORI!”

She looks around the roof, now she seems to be on the lookout for something.
“So please, please just leave before someone finds out that you're here! Just go away! I can be by myself, like I've always been!”

Ryouta is about to say something, but a much deeper voice interrupts his.
“You should listen to her, children. The rest of the household is still asleep, but your voices could rouse the whole mansion if you're not careful.”

Hey. Who is this guy?

A hulking behemoth who stands twice my size now stands between Kaori and us. Behind him, Kaori has her hands over her mouth with her eyes are wide as dinner plates. Tears are starting to stream down her face as this beast shifts his weight from one foot to the other.
Where did he come from? How come we didn't notice this guy when we landed?

Hey, Is it just me or- along the roof, is one of the gargoyles missing?

Whew! Sorry this thread went on for so long, I didn't expect multiple power outages to occur.

I suppose I should plan threads for when we have fair weather and not huge stormfronts!

Thank you all for the thread, let me know what you thought of it!

Let them come.
>>
>>35517702
Excited for the next one. Thanks for running dude.
>>
>>35517704
I'm getting the impression that we'll be screwed if we try attacking this place.

>>35517702
Good as usual.
>>
>>35517756
That's why we grab her and leave. If we can't come here then clearly it's not a good place for her.

Going to take her to a real home.
>>
>>35517796
They never said anything about us not coming here. All they said was that we should leave because we might wake people up and that Kaori isn't here.

I'm thinking we lower our voices and quietly follow Magician to her room. The name battle isn't worth fighting right now.
>>
>>35517835
If that's the case then I agree. Totally force her to let us sleep in her bed with her again. Maybe if she doesn't want to leave RIiight now she'll be forced to recognize that she has a sister.
>>
>>35517856
Hah.

Until you come to your senses, Priestess (when in Rome...) is going to be right here with you. You're never going to be alone again and you are going to like it.
>>
>>35517897
Exactly! I AM EBIL EVERYONE SHOULD HAET ME!

No you cannot escape the hugs.
>>
>>35517702
Would the meeting have gone better if we had told everyone to call her Magician?
>>
>>35518013
That would be a long shot and it's arguable if they wouldn't have called her Kaori anyway.

That's just how they know her.
>>
One thing I asked my other quest that I will ask you guys as well if anyone is around

Were you guys wanting me to start an ask.fm?
>>
>>35518221
You have another quest??

This quest doesn't lend itself to an ask.fm, unless you're willing to give out tons of OOC information. I'd rather not have that happen.
>>
>>35518273
Fair enough, that's to be expected

My other quest is one I've mentioned on twitter once, but it started as an attempt to completely change how I write as an experiment, it's named 'Dog Days Quest' and I purposefully tried to make it the polar opposite from CPM in every way I knew how.

Also they didn't want an ask.fm either. And I don't really feel right about lending lots of OOC information out.
>>
>>35518221
You could make one but I'd never ask anything.
>>
>>35518311
Ah. Dog days is... Okay? Not a big fan of the harem antics and the like or well not necessarily harem but.. You get where I'm going with it.

Much prefer this quest.
>>
>>35518311
YOU WRITE THAT??? Fuck, I feel bad about not reading it since around thread 11 now.

In retrospect, I'm surprised I didn't notice. You're good at reconciling votes.
>>
>>35518363
That's about were I dropped it as well 14 or so. I don't feel bad about dropping it... QM said it was literally the opposite of this.
>>
>>35518328
I can't think what people would ask, so it's all fair.

>>35518348
I understand completely.

>>35518363
It surprised a lot of people when I announced it!

I was wanting to keep it a kind of secret initially, but RL issues mean that I may have to start traveling for interviews, so both quests could have sudden delays at any time. And I wanted to give advance warning in case it started happening.

It hasn't happened yet, but keep your fingers crossed that it keeps going that way.
>>
>>35518396
Well, in my case it's not so much consciously dropping as forgetting about it and not bothering to catch up.

And now I have more reason to bother catching up.
>>
>>35518433
That's the thing for me. If I can easily forget about it... it wasn't really for me. This quest I binged on the archives and followed the twitter to keep up.
