You are a Magical Girl, and it's been three days since your successful interrogation of Beatrice Reinhardt - formerly known as Lucius the Eternal, the Peerless Swordsmaster, the Daughter of Sparda, and countless other self-preening titles.

Now currently known as the half-melted, half-scorched biological wreckage that Headquarters housekeeping had carefully scraped off of the walls and floor of the Silent Room she'd died a burning death in. A burning, shrieking, screaming death.

One that she very nearly shared with the one remaining Culexus of your Officio.

The both of them screaming with the same searing pain that would have killed any uncontracted soul ten times over.

There's an unsavory pun in there somewhere, one involving skewered meat thrown on a grill and Yuma's own rank, but you'll rip out your kneecaps first before giving voice to something like that.
>>
>>35583032

It could have gone down a bit better, sure. You'll be the first to grudgingly agree to that optimistic assessment.

You could have accepted the honor duel that the Eversor had asked for, for one - the request made with that self-satisfied smirk on her face. You could have taken Yuma's reluctance at the task you asked her to carry out as a refusal, instead cutting your answer out of Lucius yourself with that old standby you relied on - a good knife, a good arm, and equal amounts of elbow grease and patience. Maybe those would have gotten you the answers you needed.

Or maybe Lucius would have simply changed her mind and demanded for something else again, filling your ears with bleated apppeals for a warrior's honor. A warrior's code.

You didn't do any of those things, of course. Instead, you had Chitose Yuma rip the information you needed out of Lucius' skull. Even with the Culexus warning you moments before that the information was warded, protected by something powerful, protected against this exact kind of interference - and that her going through with the extraction would result in something...well, not very nice happening. You had her do it anyway, but only after - and you find yourself stressing the distinction here, ONLY AFTER - you gave Lucius one last chance. One last chance to dig herself out of the shithole she'd gleefully, smirkingly dug herself into.

She didn't deserve one. Not after the enemy action she pulled against you back during the Kirishima operation, not after she held an entire stadium audience hostage just to get at you.

And it wasn't as if she was forced into the affair, made to follow a clearly suicidal order - the unhealthy gleam of hatred made personal shone in her eyes when she ran you through with that sword of hers, a gleam that was backlit with the sick fire of zealous fanaticism.

[1/2]
>>
>>35583040

Lucius told you herself - she was killing you to stop some insane prophecy. By shoving a meter of cold, tempered steel through your spine by way of your gut, she was saving the world and everyone in it. From you. From Pinky. From god knows whatever else she thought you were capable of.

But instead of taking it, she spat it right back into your face, and then...

...You're not even going to try and recount what happened afterwards, but suffice to say the smell and sight of a Culexus being burned alive in her hardsuit isn't something you're going to forget anytime soon. By the same token, however, you also won't easily forget the look of vindicated triumph that shone in Yuma's crimson eyes, after you pulled off her helmet to reveal her ruined, scorched features. The ragged pulse of her silent voice in your head, telling you exactly what you needed to hear without her having to try and force her melted, fused-together lips apart.

She knew where Oriko was. The exact location of the Prophet's established stronghold, where Oriko and her followers would fall back after every successful attack - after every successful raid.

By paying the price of nearly being burned to death by crimson soul-fire, your Culexus had given you the key to dealing with the Prophet once and for all.

And hopefully, it's the same key that'll let you get Oriko out of this mess alive, you think as you gingerly brush your bandaged fingers against your bruised jaw. You're still keeping your promise to Kyoko, even if she saw fit to deck you hard enough for you to fall over once she found out just what happened in the interrogation.

...She apologized immediately afterwards, of course, even without Sayaka's prompting, your red-haired best friend completely in tears - but fuck, it still hurt. Even with the current Venenum Rank Leader personally attending to you - no, wait, they had another term for the position, Apothecary Primus or something - it still hurt.

[2/3]
>>
>>35583063

Then again, the pain in your jaw is probably nothing compared to the pain that Yuma needed to be rendered comatose from.

Ninety percent of Yuma's entire body had been subjected to third degree burns, the Apothecary Primus - Touno Asai, you remember her name from the identification card pinned to her lapel as well as the breathy way she introduced herself - had told you after politely ushering you into the Silent Room that now served as Yuma's own recovery ward. Ninety percent of her skin cooked into insensate meat.

They had to cut away her hardsuit to treat her properly - even having to surgically remove patches of the inner lining where the suit had fused with the scorched flesh underneath. This meant that they had to work on an unclad Culexus to save her life - which mean that they were also exposed to the same nauseating, unfiltered anti-magic inherent to the rank.

To counter the effect, the life-saving operation had to be performed in another Silent Room, with its engines running full-out and focused completely on Yuma. This of course made the medical staff working on your Culexus just as sick as they would be, but not sick enough that they couldn't do their duties. Still, bucket after bucket of vomit had to be sloshed out - and those passing out from exhaustion quickly wheeled out to be replaced by a fresh Venenum, with their breakfasts still in their stomachs.

It had taken an entire day - and the entire medical staff of the Ninth Officio - to finally get Yuma stable. Touno had explained that night, as the both of you looked down on a quietly sleeping Chitose Yuma, her form once more sheathed in the studded black leather of a Culexus hardsuit - that it wasn't that Yuma's special circumstances that made it a long and difficult process, but her injuries. The nature and cause of them.

[3/4]
>>
>>35583090

Apparently, the fire that had burned Yuma wasn't simply just mundane fire, or even magical fire. Either one would have been easy to fix, even with the victim being a culexus. No, what burned Yuma was something different. Something...well, evil, she'd finally said after a momentary awkward pause. It was the only way she could describe it. Evil. Cursed. The only similar incidence of it she'd seen - and even then, only in a brief imitation of it - were in fatal injuries inflicted by Omega-class Witches. Witches nearly equal to Walpurgisnacht.

They'd had to slowly reconstruct Yuma's flesh. Not the simple magic-encouraged regeneration which would take minutes, or even seconds - but gradually, painstakingly slow, atom by atom. Cell by cell. Scraping away the burned tissue and carefully urging the healthy bits left to regrow what they lacked.

This had taken, again, another day to do, while you and Kyoko and Midori waited outside, sitting vigil. Sayaka and Mami stopped by every now and then, both also clearly concerned yet taking it upon themselves to handle the Officio's day-to-day.

Wendy, surprisingly, also sat vigil with you, only going off every now and then to bring you paperwork that you needed to sign or look over, which she then brought back to Mami. Apparently you not deciding where to assign her meant that she was serving as Mami's secretary - temporarily at least, she'd replied gruffly after you inquired.

And now, on the third day, with you having taken up a temporary office outside Yuma's Silent Room - Touno Asai had finally stepped out and declared that Chitose Yuma was, for a lack of a more accurate term, healed.

[4/5]
>>
>>35583103

"You can wake her up if you wish, Warmaster," Touno murmurs beside you. "...Or perhaps you'd like to wait for Miss Kyoko? She did ask you to call her the moment Yuma wakes up."

Yeah, Kyoko did say that. Sayaka had to bodily drag her away from another night of sleeping on the floor beside your table, with the red-haired Eversor screaming that she needed to be there, that she needed to stay.

In the end - with Sayaka pleading with you to talk sense to your best friend - you promised Kyoko that you'd call her the moment something in Yuma's situation changed. She went off with Midori, who you also insisted to go and attend to her own...stuff. Being Callidus Instructor and everything. She cooperated a bit more easily than Kyoko did, but not after a particular display of affection that you're glad Wendy wasn't around to see.

Anyway, you can either wake Yuma up now, or...call Kyoko and wait for her before doing so.

What do you do?

[]Wake Yuma up. There's something you need to talk with her about in private.

If it's "private Warmaster business" then Kyoko can always be ordered outside when needed. Keeping Kyoko happy with us and giving Yuma a friendly face to wake up to both seem like good choices.

Interesting bit about the fire being cursed and evil and witchlike.

Wonder if the unknown culexus also has a GW? That might explain the evil and corrupt nature of the injuries. I assume it was the culexus that implanted the ward anyway.

Though I guess it could have been Ahriman herself that placed the ward. That would certainly explain the corrupt nature of the burns (Oriko has Ahrimans GW).

Hopefully the three stooges felt it when Yuma broadcasted her emotions to us, and how guilty she feels and how sorry she is. That should somewhat alleviate Murderfaces anger.

And if not, we can always point out how badly the Homusquad itself has screwed up (a lot worse than Yuma), and how many chances the Homus have had to try and fix things and redeem themselves (countless second chances).

Compared to that, giving Yuma a single second chance should be nothing. Murderface also seems like someone who would respect it if we stood up to her and pointed the hypocrisy of not giving Yuma a second chance.

Especially after Yuma burned herself nearly to death at our orders.

Welcome aboard the funtruck! Where the shitposting is endless!

"Shadowruns" is a meme that basically refers to intense, often supremely irrational levels of paranoia, caused by reading much too deeply into the actions of other characters.

Example: Mami makes us a nice stack of pancakes.

What's actually going on: Mami being a nice person, because that's who she is.

Shadowruns interpretation: JUST ANOTHER STEP IN MAMI'S PLAN TO MANIPULATE US WITH BREAKFAST FOODS, WE ARE THE JUNKIE AND SHE IS THE DEALER

That sort of thing.

Thanks for the explanation, I'll try to keep the stupid questions to a minimum in the future.

Just one other thing - I watched the anime back when it came out and re-downloaded it for a refresher, but I just got told that the first two movies are essentially the anime. Should I just watch the anime then jump to Rebellion or just run all 3 movies?

When you watched the anime back in the day just watching the 3 movies is fine.

The first two movies tell the story once again in HD and add some now scenes/additional lines.
The third movie concludes the saga.
You should rewatch the two movies simply because you might miss some symbolism or don't understand some scenes in the 3. one.

You nod at Touno's reminder. Probably a good idea to keep your promise to the red-haired Eversor, even if she did punch you hard enough to loosen a few teeth. You excuse yourself from the Apothecary Primus and the currently-sleeping Culexus - before dialing Kyoko's number on your smartphone and then holding up the device to your ear. It's still early morning, so you'll probably be waking her up, so this'll be really slow and--

"MURDERFACE?!" Kyoko picks up and shrieks your name even before the first ring had finished, her voice hoarse and sick with the same nerve-twisted panic of someone too worried to sleep a single wink. "WHAT HAPPENED?! IS YUMA--"

You cut her off here, otherwise you'd never get a word in edgeways. "No, Yuma's fine," you spit out quickly and tersely, hoping to cut through the thick stupor of incomprehension that usually settles over anyone who hasn't gone twenty-four hours without sleep - and in Kyoko's case, a solid seventy-two. "I'm calling because you told me to call, and--"

"--BERIGHTTHEREWAITFORMEBYE!" You jerk your phone away from your now partially-deafened ear, hearing Sayaka's screamed appeals for calm coming through the device's tiny speakers as faint, desperate shrieking. The call goes dead a moment later, and you shove your phone back into your inventory, grumbling something about Eversors and being batshit insane. You move back to Yuma's bedside, your promise fulfilled, and it's here that you wait for your best friend in awkward silence - along with the other Magical Girl in the room. The conscious one, anyway.

Thankfully, you didn't have to wait long. Only a handful of minutes had passed until Kyoko, sweating through hastily thrown-on civilian clothes, burst through the deactivated Silent Room's doors - The resultant movement and noise abrupt enough and violent enough that it makes the polite and smiling Apothecary Primus very nearly jump into your arms in shrieking fear.

She managed to catch herself before it actually happened, of course, but the furiously-blushing gaze she shot you a moment later was enough to tell you just how close it came to that.

You didn't have time to wonder about that, or even ask about it, as your best friend immediately made a beeline for the somnolent Culexus on gurney, even pushing past you while doing so. The desperate concern coming off from the Eversor in palpable waves, as if her already anguished expression didn't clue anyone else in the immediate vicinity. Her one eye wide and bloodshot as she looked down at Yuma, her shoulders shaking.

"D-Doc? Murderface?" She finally calls out to both you and Touno a moment later, as if only realizing just then and there that someone else other than her and Yuma was in the room with her. "She's...she's okay, right? She's all fixed up? You said on the phone earlier, Murderface, you told me--"

You step forward and slap your best friend's shoulder, as hard as you could manage. Not to hurt the Eversor, of course, but to deliver a shock hard enough to jolt her into waking sobriety. ...It hurt you more than it did her, anyway, the effect akin to slapping concrete with an open hand. Still, it's enough to make Kyoko hiss in pain and Touno to squeak in surprise.

"She's fine. She's healed. She'll be alright." You tell your best friend, slowly, clearly, deliberately. Making her listen to you by drawing every word out. "We can wake her up now, but you have to relax. Last thing she needs is you being hysterical. You understand, Kyoko?"

For a few seconds, nothing but silence from the Eversor. And then, nodding. "Y-yeah. Okay, Murderface. I understand. I'll...I'll be cool." Another nod, before she turns towards Touno. "...Thanks, doc. Really. I can't...I can't thank you enough for saving Yuma."

[2/3]
>>
>>35584429
You take that shit back, Mami is the pure embodiment of all that is feminine and good
>>
>>35584501

Touno simply shakes her head, acknowleding Kyoko's profuse thanks with a smile. "I did promise you we'd do everything we could, Miss Kyoko." She nods at you then, before quietly and quickly excusing herself from the room - wisely deciding to allow this particular reunion to take place in private.

...You'll have to thank her later yourself. After all this.

After a few moments more - and with Kyoko herself urging you - you carefully and gently nudge Yuma awake. It takes the Culexus a full minute to stir, and when she does, it's with pain. Not crippling pain, but...enough that you yourself feel the faintest echo of it when her words blossom in your mind.

+ Warmaster...? Kyoko-san...? I...ngh...how...? I don't remember...the interrogation, I-- +

+ You did good + You have enough time to pulse this affirmation to the Culexus, just before Kyoko elbows you out of the way to hug the crispy fuck out of Yuma. Something like a vox-corrupted squeak emits from the youngest girl's helmet speakers as she weathers out the brunt of Kyoko's clearly affectionate hug - and while you do move to seperate them, to appeal for calm from the Eversor yet again, you stop yourself as you hear Kyoko crying into Yuma's padded shoulder. Letting out the tears that she'd apparently been holding back these three days.

+ This is kind of why I steered clear of Miss Kyoko for the longest time. + Yuma pulses to you. + I didn't really want her to...be emotionally involved with me any longer. I didn't want her crying over me like this. +

+ It clearly didn't work, + You point out. + She's crying now. +

[3/4]
>>
>>35584517

+ Yes, she is. + It's here that you see Yuma's helmet turn towards you, reflecting your own face. + But I wasn't supposed to live through that, Warmaster. I was supposed to die then. I didn't. I...thought that making myself scarce would make Miss Kyoko angry at me enough that she wouldn't mind if I died, then... +

...Stupid. That's the stupidest idea you ever heard. Stupider than buying a sofa from the stupid sofa store.

If you have already seen the anime then watching the movies is probably fine.

Personally I feel the first movie is inferior to the first 8 episodes that it recaps, and then the 2nd movie is superior to the last 4 episodes.

The first movie removes several scenes (mostly ones involving Mami) to cut down on time and a I disliked a few music changes, but the animation quality is improved a bit and many lines of voice acting are redone, mostly Kyouko I think.

The second movie has the improved voice acting and animation, as well as one of my favorite bits of music (She is a Witch, plays at the very start during Sayaka's final breakdown) and does not remove any scenes that I know of, it only replaces them (Kyouko vs Octavia, and the aftermath of the fight being the two big ones). The biggest downsides are that you do not get to see how the opening/ending themes are fucked with.

Rebellion is just Rebellion.

Also if you watch the series instead of the movies be sure to watch the blu ray version, as the animation quality is massively better than the TV version.

+ That is the stupidest idea I've ever heard, + You pulse back at her, forcing as much of your disapproving frown into the psychic message. You should know - you're the best at stupid ideas. + Do something that stupid again and you'll have to get augmetic kneecaps, + you add a moment later.

+ I...I just thought it was the prudent thing to do. + Yuma bows her helmeted head, while weakly patting the still-sobbing Kyoko on the back. + I didn't want to be a burden to anyone, especially to Miss Kyoko. I didn't want her to grieve over me once I'm gone. I don't deserve that-- +

"It...it ain't nice to talk about someone while they're in the same room as you, ya know," Kyoko suddenly speaks up here, pulling away from Yuma briefly before wiping her eyes - and nose - with her hoodie's rumpled sleeve. Her voice further hoarsened and cracked by her crying. + And don't call Yuma-chan stupid, Murderface. I...I mean, she is, but ya don't need to rub it in. +

You allow yourself a small shake of your head and a smirk, before realization hits. ...Wait, did Kyoko just pulse to you? Just like a Culexus did? But how--

+ Miss Kyoko's special like that. She can pulse people naturally, like a Culexus. + Yuma replies, and it's here that you feel the sympathetic pain radiating from her slowly ebb. Either the IV attached to her arm is filling her with painkillers, or she's doing something to prevent the pain from bleeding through the pulsed connection. Either one suits you just fine, and you let out a sigh of relief as the migraine threatening to throb between your eyes fades.

+ It's a bit of a mystery, really. I don't think even Miss Malal managed to figure out just why. +

+ It doesn't work all the time, though, so it's kinda more like a stupid party trick than anythin' really useful. Gives me a headache for a day or so, too. + Kyoko winces here, before speaking in her own physical voice. "A-anyway, let's just talk the regular way, okay? We don't need to do all that pulsin' stuff."

Yuma glances at you for the briefest moment, before turning to your best friend. + You can reply normally, Miss Kyoko. I'll keep pulsing for now. I don't...feel well enough to actually talk just yet. +

"Oh? Well...okay, I guess. Just be sure to get better, alright?" Kyoko grins, catching Yuma in another hug, before rapping her knuckles on the Culexus' helmet. "And make sure ya do everything doc tells you to, including eating those nasty beets!"

...Well. Guess Yuma doesn't want Kyoko to know about her not being able to talk anymore.

What do you do?

[]Break the news to Kyoko yourself. No keeping secrets from your best friend.

So is Yuma full Rune-Balot now, or will her vocal cords be usable again after some recovery time?

On a different but related subject, it might be a good idea to ask Coobs if he can arrange for us to get a few more Culexus from somewhere. Yuma can't really be a Rank Leader when she has nobody else to Lead, after all, and if she'd had some backup to help her with the ward then the damage might not have been so bad.
>>
>>35585425
Yes, but some injuries are permanent no matter how much the Incubator tries to regen it, like Kyoko's permanent blindness in 1 eye.

Kyoko isn't that oblivious or stupid, though. If Yuma doesn't tell her, she'll figure it out herself pretty soon. And this isn't the sort of secret that needs to be told post-haste to prevent Bad Things from happening.

Just because we're the protagonist doesn't mean we have to do everything ourselves.

>>35585495
I think it's because the fire that was part of the mental ward wasn't just fire, or magic fire, but a kind of fire that afflicted not just the physical body but also the metaphysical idea of the body in the Soulgem.

So creating a new fully healed body wouldn't be possible because the data files used in creating a new one have been corrupted.
>>
>>35585520

You decide to let Yuma decide when to tell Kyoko about her not being able to talk anymore. There's keeping secrets from your best friend, and then there's being lousy with other people's secrets.

Instead, you ask the one remaining Culexus in your Officio about what she learned from Lucius. Where Oriko is.

+ She's...well...+ Yuma seems to hesitate here, as if unsure of what she's about to say, before forging onward. + I know it sounds crazy, Warmaster, but Oriko's base of operations is in the Akashic Realm. +

...Wait, what? She's IN there? She's in that giant barrier?

"The A-Kashyyyk Realm?" Kyoko's one eye widens here. "What, we're gonna have to fight Wookiees to get to Oriko? I--OW! MURDERFACE!"

You hiss in pain as you massage your stinging palm, fresh from slapping Kyoko's shoulder in an attempt to silence the Eversor, before turning to the Culexus again. She's sure? This isn't some sort of overwrought trap set by Oriko or whoever, to get you to march into the hell behind reality? ...And how does she know about the Akashic Realm, anyway? That's supposed to be classified information--

+ Miss Malal taught me enough. + Yuma shakes her head. + And no, Warmaster, this doesn't feel like deception to me. This information is - well, was - something that Lucius truly believed in. ...Unless, of course, she was deceived in the first place to lead us there, which means that Miss Oriko had planned her to fail, be captured and be interrogated like this. And that is just impossible, no one can plan that much in advance--+

+ Not even someone who can see the future? + You interrupt her. + Like a Prophet? +

[1/2]
>>
>>35586199
.....lets do it
>>
>>35586311
Zone is simply too erogenous.
>>
>>35586313

+ ... + Yuma is silent for several moments before shaking her head again. + I'd argue that prophecy and progonostication shouldn't be relied on too much, because not even Miss Malal could predict the future with a hundred percent accuracy. + There's a bit of a guilty tone in her psychic words then, before she forges on. + Still, even with that, I don't think this is a trap. If it is, it's something I can easily get us out of. + She reaches up to tap the side of her helmet.

Oh? How can she do that, then?

+ Teleportation. With the knowledge I got from Lucius and with the help of Kyuubey's teleporter, I can get a five-person kill-team into the exact spot that's supposed to be Oriko's headquarters. If it turns out to be something it shouldn't be, then I can get them out just as quickly. +

"That doesn't sound too bad, I guess?" Kyoko wonders aloud. "But what's this Akashic Realm thing? Is it some kinda barrier or something...?"

You'll explain to her later, you tell the red-haired Eversor. You turn back to Yuma. How soon can she set this up? This teleportating kill-team thing?

+ Within the day, Warmaster. Just let me...recuperate a bit, first. + Even with her visor down, you can tell she's smiling. + Just let me catch my breath, and I'll approach the Incubator directly. That should give you enough time to arrange a kill-team, I think. +

Well. Seems that you now have a way to Oriko's headquarters. If it doesn't turn out to be a trap.

What do you do?

[]Go with this plan, make arrangements for your kill team.
[]What are the chances that this could be a trap?

five people only, damn shame we can't go all out war on them with the entire officio.

Just teleport a bomb there, Oriko won't die that easily.

The Davy Crockett is rather underwhelming for a nuke.

Now, if we got our hands on a proper 20 MT warhead on the other hand…

i never said day crockett, i mean we have a time stop, and a Claudius girlfriend, we could easily sneak into an ICBM facility and steal one.

Need to talk to the stooges. It sounds plausible but this sounds like a plan of the prophet, or her rider, to lure us into the Akashic Realm.

I want to know exactly how much shit we'll be in given she'll likely be at her best in there.

This is too much like letting her dictate the playing field, but at the same time it doesnt feel like we can't let her work unhindered.
>>
>>35586513
Alternate explanation: the teleporter has a long enough recharge timer that, if we teleport a bomb in there, any survivors from the bomb have enough time to bug out before the kill team can be sent in.

This seems too easy.
I'm all for teleporting the biggest nuke we can find right in, and just letting it go off. Why bother sending a team when we can mail them the biggest bomb we can find?

Speaking of bombs, pic related.

12:04, little cafe on the corner of fuck if I remember, and Green Green was supposed to meet me for lunch. We agreed to disguises - personal reasons for her, and to dodge Shiraki, the Prophet, and god knows who else for me. Said I'd know her when I saw her. I tried to oblige in the same way.

...Probably still on her way. Wasn’t like everyone just…showed up for lunch right at twelve, on the dot. That would be retarded, and impossible. I was still wound up from the crisis from that morning and, even more than that, the meeting after. The meeting with Matsuda and her gang, where they stared us down like a pack of rabid animals that were about to turn on them.

+Yeah, fuck those guys. Bet we could get away with firebombing their HQ or…something.+ A not-voice bubbled up from the seat across from me. …Nico still loomed over me, with her eyes gouged out and her mouth ripped open, oozing something black and awful. A parody of a god damn amazon, dripping and towering and moving in ways a human shouldn't quite be able to.

I ran a quick check on my disguise again in my head. Neat black hair like Kong’s, fluffed out a little with little round, red glasses. Filled the body shape out a bit, and meshed her facial features with Karasawa’s. Mayumi was a little taller than me, so I had to deal with that too, and it came with the usual sort of awkward feeling. Thickened my vocal chords a little, changed my jacket color, good enough for…whatever. Good enough for her to get the idea.

Maybe good enough to impress her.

Generally, when you steal a nuke, unless you happen to have the right crew of engineers, you aren't going to be able to "Just take the warhead."
They're wired into the rest of the missile too. Also most ICBMs have redundant fail-safes for this kind of deal.

A lot of modern ones will not arm until they reach reentry velocity.

+Nothing? Come on, man. Don’t be a dick, be a dude. I’ve had my ladyboner on full murder since this morning and all we’ve done is stare at Tomoe’s ass all day.+

“I’m not lighting their HQ on fire,” I mumbled out loud. Shouldn’t make a habit of that. Didn’t care, right at that moment. “I’m trying to be cool. Okay? You remember what it means to be cool?”

+Yeah. Do you?+ Nico stuck a long, mutant tongue out, caked in black ichor, in what was I guess supposed to be a childish gesture.

12:05. She was coming, right? Of course she was coming. Ninth Officio was a couple of blocks away, Tenth wouldn't give her slack OR credit for her work...Seventh, maybe? They had people all over. ...Probably Ninth.

I stared down into milky, sugary coffee. …Still a little too hot.

12:06. Fuck. This was a mistake. She probably had better shit to do than-

“Dreamy?” A gentle, sweet voice sounded from behind me, with a tiny hint of hesitation to it. I waited a second, then glanced back and nodded. She seemed relieved, flashed me a soft smile. …Miracle Midori. She came as Miracle Midori, of course she came as Miracle Midori. Made me feel a little self-conscious. Probably looked like an asshole. Or a stalker. Or something.

“…Get here okay?” I grunted out as she settled in opposite me, Nico squeezing out of the way and settling into the booth behind her. …Looked like she planned on looming there for the whole fucking date. Wonderful.

Not date. It wasn’t a date. Shit.

“Ahh, it was kind of a busy morning, so I got out a little late…sorry!” Her eyes sparkled. Shouldn’t have been a surprise, but her Midori disguise blew all the times I’d tried it to shit. Probably put a lot of time into it, or maybe…that was just what she looked like? I’d hit it. “You haven’t been waiting too long, have you?”

“…Just got here,” I mumbled, hunkering down in my seat a little. …Fuck. Alright. Get it together, Cooldown. You pretend to be people for a god damn living. Just…think Mayumi. Think Murder Mayumi.

+Oh man, her hair smells great.+ Nico leaned in right next to her ear, drooling onto her shoulder. A fruity scent I couldn’t pin down filled my nose, seemed to fill my whole head, left me feeling a little dizzy. I pulsed, a quick, lazy Callidus check. Just…needed to make sure that wasn’t…what she was doing. The smell thing. Shit. Would that even tell me?

Green frowned a little and brushed her hair away, her hand passing through Nico’s face.

(3/10)
>>
>>35586725
Point.

It'd probably take a while though, going safe. Even an inert nuclear warhead still usually has enough high explosives to level a small building.
>>
>>35586743

“Hey, we agreed…” We agreed that disguises were okay. That we wouldn’t try to tear them away or dig around or…whatever.

“Yeah. …It wasn’t that. …Long morning.” I tried to offer a smile, but it was weak and awkward and shitty and a huge mistake, fuck me.

“I understand.” Her expression brightened, and when the waitress came around again, we ordered. …She was cute. The uniform’d look great on Green.

…12:14. I was nursing my coffee and she hadn’t let go of her tea. Started just…kind of looking over there. Neither of us had spoken for a couple of minutes.

+So you’re pretty much going to bang her, right?+ Nico’d moved to the side of the table, sitting weightlessly on the edge. She changed into one of the waitress uniforms, just to fuck with me. +Like, that’s the plan? Because we’ve got like fifteen minutes to get her into a bathroom stall if we want anything more than a shitty quickie.+

“… …I really like your work. Your, uh. …Recent work. …Knew someone a lot like Mayumi, so…” Green perked up when I started talking again and nodded.

“Right, she reminded you of your girlfriend, right? …Sorry! Sorry...” A grin, an honest one, cracked my face as she stammered a little.

“…It’s fine. She’s gone.” It wasn’t fine, but I’d lie through my teeth all I needed to to keep Green around. “Better to move on. …Looking for something new, anyway.” That much was true; I had so much of my own shit to deal with lately, I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to get wrapped up in Matsuda’s any more than I already had.

Our eyes met and she made a little noise, an awkward laugh. I couldn’t quite keep the smile off of my face. …Until I noticed Nico making jerk-off motions in the air and…maybe rolling her eyes? Wasn’t sure she could even do that.

(4/10)
>>
>>35586758

+Would you knock that shit off?+ I forced my smile to stay as much as I could. …I could manage that much, I wasn’t so fucking green I couldn’t fake an expression. Most days. …She was looking for it, looking for what changed. Shit.

+It’s not like I have anything else to do. You’ve been working up this wicked revenge boner and all you’re fucking DOING with it is hoping Green will drop to her knees and put her fucking mouth on it.+ She froze for a second, then the enormous, dripping slash on her face widened, almost all the way up to her ears. Her hand turned black and indistinct, then reshaped itself into the shape of one of Real Nico’s cleavers.

+I could start cutting her up. You want me to start cutting her up? Could pretend she’s Matsuda’s little slut. They look a lot alike, don't they?+

“Hey.” I stood as much as I could at the booth and banged my fucking thighs on it, hissing out a couple of choice curses.

“W-what’s wrong? Is everything okay…?” Vivid red eyes lit up with worry, and I eased myself out of the booth.

“…Uhh.” I tried to think fast. Shit. I was usually better at this. Shit! “…Do you wanna…”

+Go to the bathroom?+

“Go to the bath…back? …Go out back? Get a smoke?”

+Hah, no way, it fucking worked!+

“…O…kay.” She nodded slowly, and we slipped out after leaving a few crumpled bills on the table. …Barely even touched that coffee.

It was a relief to have an excuse to just…lean up against a wall and smoke. Easiest thing in the world. Easy to look like you’re in control. Easy to look like you know what you’re doing, like you’re-

+A mysterious and super awesome scary badass. You really think that’s gonna get her panties dripping?+ Nico followed us, of course she followed us. She was mocking me, leaned up against the opposite wall, bullshitting her own face-fucked Miracle Midori disguise. Guess she was getting in the spirit of “… …You smoke?” Bet she things.

didn’t. Midori didn’t, didn’t like Mayumi doing it. I held the pack out anyway, and with some trepidation, she took a cigarette. Fumbled with it a little, slipping it between two fingers, then into her mouth.

“…Um, can you light it?” she murmured awkwardly a second later, and I held back a snicker. My lighter was already out, a big, fat, gold motherfucker with an eagle on it. I leaned in toward her and lit both of them at once, then inhaled nice and deep.

The cigarettes here were cheap vending machine trash, and I wasn’t sure if magical girls could even really get addicted to the shit. But the ritual of it was…yeah. It was calming. Helped me center. Helped me get a grip again. I could feel Nico pressing up against my psyche, making sure she got to stick around even after I collected myself. …Whatever. She wasn’t even pissing me off much today.

Might have actually jumped when Green started hacking it up next to me, though, clutching her cigarette in one hand while she coughed into the other.

“Sh, shit…” After her coughing settled down, she shot a sheepish smile up at me. “…I spent years trying to get my mom to quit, now look at me, huh…” Snorted at that, a little blast of hot smoke drifting out of my nostrils.

“Wouldn’t worry about quitting, cupcake. Looks like you can’t even start.” It was hard to keep the grin off my face. She glowered up at me, looked like she might try to hit me for that one. Her expression softened fast, though, and she let out a defeated snicker.

“Well…people offer all the time, but this is the first time I’ve said yes.” After a moment of deliberation, she brought the cigarette back to her lips and took another, apparently smaller drag. Managed to hold it in this time. Mostly.

+You took her smoke cherry! Congratulations, you can pretend that means something I guess.+ She was going to be bitching all day, seemed like.

“Well…work’s been stressful, and you asked, so…” Green shuffled her feet, and we smoked in silence for a few minutes.

12:27.

“So…you get pretty nervous when you’re not used to someone, huh?” I could already tell she was trying to get me back for laughing at her before. …It was working. I scratched at the back of my neck and looked away from her, lighting up another cigarette. I saw her edge in closer out of the corner of my eye, and grunted before she could ask again.

“Pretending to be Mayumi won’t save you, Dreamy.” After a second, she poked me in the arm with a manicured fingernail. Then a little higher. Then my cheek.

“… …I don’t do social calls. Most people can’t handle-“

“-coming face to face with a real monster.” She finished for me, and I tensed up. Shit. “I wrote that line. I told you, pretending to be Mayumi won’t save you.”

“…Y….yeah.”

+Stab her. Come on. It’ll make the problem go away, right? She’s stepping to you. Are you just gonna take that from some illusory manga bitch?+ My knife materialized in my hand, as if goading me to just listen to Nico and take the easy way out. I forced it away again with a few sparkles of light. …If Green saw the glint of the blade, she didn’t say anything about it.

“Sooo you like to paint, right?” Oh thank god, she had something else to talk about. “Tell me a little more about it.”

“…so we spent all this time thinking that she’d been kidnapped, but it turned out she’d just eloped without telling anyone and it left a really big mess.” Green realized it was easier for me to talk about work, eventually. I managed to goad her into a couple of stories, too, although I kept mine to the…less gory ones. The clean ones, the ones that almost sounded heroic. The ones I’d tell Elly.

“…Couldn’t handle that kind of job, myself. I’d just get pissed off and start…I don’t know. Shaking down yaks. With my knife.” I’d ended up flipping it in my hand while we talked. It was…easier? Maybe I wanted to show off a little. Disguised it just enough, I hoped. Weren’t exactly a lot of girls that ran around with magical kitchen knives.

“You really only do one kind of job, huh…” …When she put it that way, it was a little embarrassing. I flipped my knife as high into the air as I could, then snatched it on its way down, bringing the point a few millimeters from her nose. She didn’t flinch. My arm fell back to my side after a second, and I lazily tossed it from hand to hand instead.

“…I can do others.” I hadn’t in recent memory, but I could. I could change the weather with my fucking imagination, for chrissakes, of course I could do something stupid like track some asshole down or…whatever.

“It’s okay, I mean…I think it’s kind of cool. I couldn’t do that, though…I, um. I’d rather help people, whenever I can. Reunite families, or rescue people, or-“

“Midori stuff.”

“Yeah…Midori stuff.” She beamed at the comparison. …Some people really weren’t comfortable with the reality of our lives. Guess it made it easier for her to think she was doing something a little heroic. “And you do Mayumi stuff, huh?”

“…Guess so.” …And for some of us, it was easier to let our demons loose on whoever the fuck got in the way. An optimist might say that was one way someone as screwed up as we…as I was could help people. I wasn’t an optimist, but I wasn’t gonna stop her from sugarcoating it if she wanted.

…1:18. When I checked my phone, she checked hers, then squeaked out a curse.

“I’m really, really sorry, I’ve gotta fly. I was supposed to be back twenty minutes ago.” …Yeah. Probably had to get back myself. I nodded, though, and after a second of hesitation…

“…Couple blocks? QB Heavy?” She froze dead and opened her mouth.

“N-no. I mean, yes, but-“

“I’ll walk you. …Don’t plan on going inside or anything, just… …you know. …I’ll walk you.”

Green blinked for a second, then nodded slowly. Then again, quicker, with a smile.

“I think that’ll be okay. …You’re really a lot nicer than you want people to notice, huh?”

“…Whatever.” The both of us said it at the same time. She flashed me a shit-eating grin, and by the time I could respond, she was already on her way out of the alley.

…We made plans for this weekend. Provided work doesn’t assfuck us. Think I’m really looking forward to it.

Human Resources 2: Guardian Angel

'Transformation'.

I was sort of proud of it, in a way, having an authentic costume to blend in. Getting into it every day, moving around in it, that sort of thing? Not so much. The sacrifices we make for our life's work, or something like that. On the bright side, it gets the effect down - makes the right sort of impression on anyone who sees it - and isn't that what this is all about in the end?

Pure white getup, bit of gold here and there. Goes the whole nine yards; glitter, ribbons, all of it. Even has a little pair of flappy, feathered wings. Goddamn ridiculous, like someone let a ten-year-old outfit all of heaven. I've heard them call me 'guardian angel of the Third'. Obviously, I love hearing it worked, the whole angel look and stuff. Still feel like a bit of a clown in it sometimes, though. At least I got to pick mine. Not having to walk around looking like some sort of Hell's Angels reject is a plus, too.

The Third Officio Assassinorum. The perfect Officio, or at least, that's the story we've been spinning. A wonderful world where magical girls didn't transform into witches - so obviously we never tell them it can happen - where no one was a ticking time bomb, where the incubator looked after everyone's needs and his aide really, truly cared, wanted only what was best for everyone there. ...Rabbit had a sort of gentleman's agreement with the other incubators, that they wouldn't rat us out. Coobs looked up to him, so that was that - even got a Callidus of his to fix up a fake soul gem for me - and the Tenth... come on, who likes 'em enough to listen? If someone at home gets the wrong idea, it's as simple as calling a hit.

This writeup was sublime.

My sides...they are gone now. Forever lost...
>>
Peter and I, well, we go a while back. Let's just say the guy doesn't have a clue about how to deal with actual humans, so I offered to help him along. His helper. The one that keeps everything running smoothly, gives him ideas on how to run the show, that sort of thing. Make sure people know what they need to know and nothing else, clear things up before anyone goes off the deep end; well, more than they already have, with the head cases he hauls in sometimes. It's like herding cats, most days. They still think I'm one of them, Callidus by trade, just too important to join them on their missions. Perfect older sister to the lot of them, doing all of this for years now and telling them everything they need to know about being a magical girl.

Incubators can't lie, or they think they're above it, I was never quite sure. Either way, Peter was smart enough to put me in charge of information. I slip up, sometimes. Oversights happen. The Third keeps being the perfect Officio. It's an easier pitch, what can I say?

I make sure my pearly white soul gem's nice and visible on its choker, so everyone gets a good look at the pretty little rock. Walk in through the door with a smile and a wave, greeting everyone I meet; it sort of blurs together. First name, last name, nickname of choice, whatever it takes. Of course I knew all their names, even the ones that just joined yesterday. Especially the ones that just joined yesterday. It was my job, I couldn't very well slip up. The kids loved it, first-hand attention from one of the local big-shots. Stop to chat with a couple of them, ask them what they're doing, how their day's been, that sort of stuff. Bring up something they wouldn't expect me to know or care about, that always gets them.

Whole Officio's best friend, after all. Why wouldn't I know what to say?

Office supplies, weapon and medical shipments, towering stack of priceless Venenum toys, the works. Adding a couple new recruits to the database, and... ah, yeah, a funeral on Officio premises. Sometimes the kids don't have anywhere else to go for that. Managed to talk the boss into a couple things lately, too; stocks, grabbing hold of a couple import companies, stuff like that. Take a page from the Ninth and rake in some extra funding. Downside is, it just about doubled my workload at the desk for the moment.

...It's kind of a weird place, here. All too futuristic to look real, at least to me. Hovering chair, little disembodied-looking glowing screens that he opens up for his phonecalls, scrolling rosters everywhere, text flashing on all the walls just enough to give me a migraine if I look up from my big old desk next to his. ...Asked him once if he was just pulling my leg or doing those for show, like all that fancy scrolling Matrix stuff. Turns out they can read a whole lot more at once than we can, and he even sounded surprised that I can't. Incubators. None of them know the first thing about humans, far as I can tell; mine sure doesn't.

Quick briefing aside, we don't talk much, only so much to say to each other even when we're sharing a room. To be fair, he's always pretty distracted during the chats with his brother over at the Ninth. Do they even have brothers, or is it a figure of speech? Well, never mind, it's not important. Heard it was a pretty big deal, being allowed to just sit in for their talks, but I never paid much attention. Looks like he's pretty much given up about the new nickname, though. That'll be fun.

After the apocalyptic landscape we saw in our last timestop, I am kind of wondering if our timestop is linked to these Akashic Realms. I mean Pinky can only appear in the timestop, so maybe we shift dimensions towards the realms when we timestop.

Maybe using the timestop in the Akashic Realms would instead shift us towards the real world. Or possibly into something even worse than the Akashic Realms.

not necessarily. Sayaka "turning off" her pain is an example of what can potentially be achieved.

There are things a Meguca does largely out of force of habit, and breathing might well be one of them.

Let's see, all done here, and... right, she's been looking a little off lately. Time to take a quick trip underground. Place freaks me out a bit, honestly, but you get used to that around these people. The elevator clunks downward for a while, through a little metal shaft into what might as well be a bomb shelter. Who knows why they kept the place hidden, much less this well protected. What I do know is that no one gets in without- oh, no, scratch that. There's a moth right there, tackling the lone light bulb like some stupid, fluttery battering ram.

Well, most of us are supposed to be here. That's just going to have to do.

The prediction engine - really just a placeholder, I should come up with something for the rabbit before 'oracle cellar' sticks - is a pretty stark kind of place. Never liked it. Bare steel all around and bright white lights embedded in the ceiling, with more glare than anyone in their right mind could like. It's very... clean. Sterile, I guess. There really isn't much to look at anywhere, except for the big, obvious stream running down the middle of it.

People - and by that I mean the local sparkler brigade - called it the River of Tales. It'll do. A little stream running down the middle of the room, from nowhere and to nowhere as far as I can tell. Petey never said a whole lot about just what was going on with it or where it came from. Looks and acts like paper and water at the same time, never got how. Blank paper, according to any Culexus who's seen it; me, I see... all sorts of things in it, some of which might have happened. So do most. Call it a trance, I guess, or a flashback to some memories, some of them from outside your life, others from stuff that hasn't happened. Once in a while, it's something you'd rather forget.

The ones we have working with it - dipping their hands in and staring in around the clock - say that it tells stories. Sometimes yours, sometimes other people's. What happened before, what could have been, what hasn't happened yet. Whole thing creeps me out, and I'd rather the room had something else in it. Luckily, there's someone right here already. Knew that coming in, obviously, else I wouldn't bother dragging myself out here.

Hitomi Masame. Vanus and Prognosticatrix. Don't ask me how the Incubators come up with anything that fancy, I would've thought they'd come up with something unbelievably dry, and yet... what even is that? Latin? Maybe I should ask, some time. Prize catch, anyway; I told the rabbit to start hunting down cripples, ill kids, the ones that are about to die, that sort of thing. Bingo, flood of contractees right away, in case he had any doubt about why he keeps me around. Not like he didn't do it before - most of them do - but he didn't look nearly hard enough. Got him to own a couple of the local hospitals and orphanages too, while we're at it. Smooths things out.

Blind, originally. Stylish as it might be, a blind seer isn't all that much use, and she didn't like the idea of not being able to see, either. The wording was our saving grace, 'I want to know what's in front of me again'. Twist it around a bit, and voila, we've snagged ourselves a prognosticatrix with perfectly good eyes. Not enough of those, though it's starting to look like we might get another before too long. Got to keep an eye on that. ...No pun intended.

She turns around with a scatter of bright orange hair, and looks at me with this big, happy smile. Makes the kid's day whenever anyone comes down here. ...Stare still weirded me out a bit, though. Never got rid of that milky-eyed look, even though she can see just fine. I make sure to meet it with a wave and just as bright a smile. I hear the dripping sound from her hands when she takes her hands out of the river - it rustles a bit when she does - but I don't see any water. Stopped trying to make sense of the thing ages ago. She hurries over to me, and not for the first time, I'm surprised that she can move anywhere in that big white robe of hers. ...Well, mostly white. It didn't need those big eyes on it, surely, even if it's her transformed getup. Come on, that's just creepy.

"Miss Ryouno!"

"Shh, what did I tell you about being so formal? It's just Harumi. We're friends, aren't we?"

A quick little nod, enthusiastic, while while I ask her how she's been doing and cheer her up a bit. Ate it right up. She's getting the usual stream of nightmarish visions around the clock, apparently.

"And you, Harumi?" Still a bit hesitant, like she thinks she shouldn't be saying it. Like it's all some kind of test to see if she can keep formal under pressure.

"Suuuuper secret spy stuff," I answer, same way I often do, with a wag of my finger and a whole lot of exaggerated sneaking over to give her a quick hug.

"You can't tell me?"

"I can't tell you, sorry. ...But don't worry," I add after a bit, like some kind of consolation prize, "it's not that interesting."

"What's it like?"

"You keep standing around trying to blend in, trying to look like you fit in perfectly, waiting around on pins and needles for just the right moment to hear something, or drop the two words you need to. ...Like I said, it's not that exciting." Shouldn't have, really, but I got a kick out of hiding in plain sight, the little hints I gave away. Call it a perk of the job.

"That... that sounds tiring." Hah, she's the one looking all worried now, that's rich.

"Oh, I'm sure it's nothing, Hitomi. Don't look so down!" Flash a smile and give her a little poke on the cheek. It's nothing between us, right?

"Besides, it's nothing so important - a lot of people can sneak around, it's just what a Callidus does, but how many can see into the future? We're counting on you, Hitomi." Everyone likes hearing they're important, or at least, most do. She brightens up a little at that, but I can see the bags under her eyes. Told me before that the visions get worse when she sleeps.

"You look a bit worn out, why don't you take a break? I can get you a cup of cocoa or something if you like; I'm sure we can both spare a little while to relax."

"...That would be nice."

I get a pair of thermoses - thermi? Never could get it straight, but it beats a cup for an elevator ride - ready, and swing by to see if I can catch a certain someone on the way. Not that her and Hitomi were that close, but the little oracle was at her best around a Culexus. Someone who'd damp the visions for a bit. Everyone wins, if only because the average Culexus is thrilled to chat with a magical girl who isn't dropping her breakfast on the floor after a minute's conversation.

Megumi Minakata, Culexus. Unluckiest girl I've ever met. Some kind of... witch's dying curse or whatever. Drags her off to every bit of misery and grief it can get her into, usually gets someone or the other caught in the fallout. Damned pain. Ends up sleepwalking into barriers, too. Joke's on the curse, obviously; not like a Culexus can witch out. Real walking disaster area, but she's more or less latched onto me; good job, me. Again, anyone who doesn't get sick from standing around her, I guess. Or actually calls her by her name.

...Heh. 'Cordy', like that freaky little mushroom. Of all the nicknames the kid could get. Good one, really. If it isn't, whatever, I've laughed at worse. Handy to have her around, though. Who else are we supposed to call when we need something picked up from a tall shelf? Heard she can do other stuff, too, but I never saw much use for it. Counting myself lucky that the whole mind-reading thing takes more than a brush on the shoulder or whatever. I call her when I catch sight of her, give her a little wave.

"Harumi. How could you tell?" Really. She thought every trainwreck in a suit looks the same to me, huh? Shame on me if I can't tell them apart. Bit weird for me, though, dealing with her alongside the kindergarten squad of the rest of this Officio, or most of them, really. She's only- well, I don't like thinking about my age. Let's just say she's only a couple years younger than me. Grouchy one, too, around most people.

"Of course I can tell! You think I can't recognise you after all the time we've known each other?" Gave her a little nudge on the shoulder.

"...Sorry. Not used to people knowi-"

"Please, Megumi, try to relax, I was only joking. And don't worry about the others, they're just a little shy! In fact, I know someone who wanted to see you right now! Would you mind heading downstairs with me to the River? Hitomi would love to see you, I'm sure, and you sound like you could use a break yourself." She sounded like a lot of things over the vox, but she usually liked a bit of time off, so I hazarded a guess this time.

"Right. Moving now. ...Thanks. Coming?" Not one to mince words, her. Never use ten words when you can use one. Never use more than one when you need two, come to that, from some of what I've heard. She has her moments, but I can't drag her out of her shell all that often. She had this little skip in her step when she marched over to the elevator, though. She was a lot easier to read than she liked to think, sometimes, and that's saying something when you're behind a helmet all day.

Well, I could spare them half an hour or so before I leave them with each other. They're both the types that could use a little break.

Shimizu Yumishita. The name blinks at me from a brand new monitor, arrived just today. Let it never be said that the Third Officio doesn't have barrels of cash to throw at whatever it can think of. Not as much as the Ninth, mind you, but it's a given for most of the Officios to some extent. Unfortunately, throwing money at a crazy little Vindy who runs around shooting out soul gems in witch barriers doesn't accomplish a whole lot. I suppose it might make her richer, but that's not quite what we're going for.

...Going to need a team to take her out soon enough, huh. Nothing I haven't organised before, just need to watch out for the backlash from these things. No one likes it when a hunt's called, but against a target like this, it'll probably go over easily.

"Better kill this one fast, Petey."

"Whatever her tactics, she is only one Vindicare, and a relatively new one at that, in spite of her competence. You may be overestimating-"

"It's not about a gun, bow or whatever else she's got. She's picked up on a couple things we don't need her to know. ...Lucky for us, she's real sick, so I don't know how much she can do. Keeping her together should cost her soul gem a lot as it is." Funny that she'd go in sick with something like this and not wish for a cure. Gets me curious enough to look at that bit of her file. What could she-

Ah. Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense.

Crazy little brat snoops around a while, stalls her wish for ages and then finally comes to the door to ask for it. Basic training and she's out, leaving us with her cross-country murdering spree. If only she'd stick to killing people, this might not be such a huge deal. A loud sigh, somewhere in the room. Thinking back, it must have been mine, the rabbit doesn't do that sort of thing much. I think I'm starting to piece it together, and it only makes me more sure that we're not talking her down. Kill team it is, and hopefully they don't get wiped out. Assuming we can get enough sense out of the River for once to even figure out where she is, anyway.

The next name flashing on the list is all it takes to convince me. Atsuko Yumishita.

"...Yeah, I'm pretty sure she's out for blood. Would explain why she put a bolt through you, too."

Joy. Sure didn't pull punches when it came to giving me messes to clear it up, but who did? ...Well, the clock, for one. Looks like my shift's over. I've got a night to think this over, minimum.

Treasure Hunter Elaine

Chapter 1: Tomb Raider

-----

My name is Elaine V. Lilian. I'm a Callidus of the 14th officio, and –

*clink*

–And… what was that…?

I turn around, looking back the way I came down the ancient stone gallery. The grand gallery of the pyramid to be precise. The tunnel wasn't all that wide, maybe four feet at the most, and it wasn't much taller. The ancient path was gently sloping up, leading me towards the king's chamber in the center of the pyramid. The walls of the grand gallery and the hieroglyphs on them were illuminated by the yellow light from my soul gem. The light wasn't all that bright, I couldn't see anything more than ten feet away from me; the rest of the pyramid was pitch black.

I turn forwards again and lift my foot up, and look down to see the stone tile I stepped on slowly rise back into place.

What.

This pyramid is trapped. This pyramid is trapped with a pressure plate. That… that doesn't happen in real life. You don't find pressure plate traps in pyramids. China, sure. But in Egyptian pyramids…you only find traps like that in movies. Did… did I fucking wander onto an Indiana Jones set by mistake or something? Should I expect Nazis to ambush me the moment I exit the pyramid or something? Russians? Commies?

A few seconds later, I could hear a rumbling ahead of me and feel the floor beneath my feet shaking.

Oh fuck me with a rusty rake, that's a fucking boulder. I've wandered onto the set of Raiders of the Lost Ark without knowing it, haven't I? That must be what happened, no other explanation makes sense. Well, it could be one of the other movies if I'm not on the set of the lost ark. One of the others must have had at least one boulder trap in it.

Despite my best attempts at disbelieving the trap into non-existence, I could hear the boulder coming closer and feel the floor shake even more violently.

She's imaginary! Sort of. This ended up being an opportunity to focus on her as something other than a prickly voice in Wendy's head, although her proper appearance is kind of long overdue. (She's shown up in passing for a sentence or two at a time, but it wasn't really set apart from Wendy's own internal monologue, because it didn't occur to me to just use the pulsing markings for her dialogue until recently.)
>>
>>35587105

Well, I'm not running back down the ascending passage to the entrance or jumping down a couple stories in the greave's shaft to get out of the way; it would take me far too long to make my way back, magic or not. So instead, I cheated.

I turned and faced the wall, somewhat disappointed that I was going to ruin the hieroglyphics on it. Using my magic, I stuck my whole arm into the wall, as far as it would go. The stone of the wall let my arm through, as if it was made out of clay. I then started scooping out large sections of the wall until there was a space large enough for me to squeeze into.

Just in time too. Not a few seconds after I jammed myself into the hole, the boulder rushed by me and slammed into the entrance to the ascending passage.

To anyone else that might have worried them more than a bit, having the only exit sealed off, but like the wall, I can dig though the boulder as well when I need to leave.

But for now, I exit the hole in the wall that I dug and continue on my way to the king's chamber, where all of the treasure is.

----------

I was interrupted before by that out of place trap, so let me start my introduction again. My name is Elaine V. Lilian. I'm a Callidus of the 14th officio, and I'm a treasure hunter. I'm blonde, about 5'8" tall and I usually wear a black t-shirt and jeans when I'm not in my costume. My magical girl costume… Well, it's a simple blue dress that turns white at the skirt. The white sleeves go to my elbows and the tiny amount of frilliness at the end is still too much for my taste. On top of the dress is white leather duster that reaches down to my ankles and is way too fucking hot to wear in the desert, or the jungle, or anywhere else on earth. At least the pyramid is cool enough to wear it. As hot as it is and how odd a white duster is, I have grown attached to it.

Rewinding to the bit about being a treasure hunter, it's exactly what it sounds like. I travel the world, find temples and ruins, and take whatever is in there that isn't nailed down. Thank the gods for the large inventory to stash things in.

As for actually breaking into pyramids, temples, tombs and such, it's pretty easy most of the time. Using my magic, being able to mold and shape any solid material I can hold in my hands, I can pretty much dig into tombs and get through blocked passageways rather easily. In fact, that's usually what I end up using my magic for, as well as for disabling traps.

Right… traps. That boulder was absolute bullshit. I can't even to begin to understand why the flying fuck that was here. That's Hollywood-tier traps. I can't even watch most of the movies that deal with ancient ruins because of how wrong they are most of the time.

Anyway. The ancient Egyptians did not do boulder traps, it wasn't their style, let alone boulder traps hooked up to pressure plates. If you want pressure plates, head to China and enter the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. You'll find more than enough working automatic crossbows hooked up to pressure plates there. The Egyptians, as well as most civilizations that buried valuables with their dead, preferred more subtle traps like putting poisonous powders like hematite on the floor for you to slowly breathe in and die as you explore the pyramid. Poisonous powder that is suspiciously absent in this tomb.

Oh well, hopefully I'll find a few answers as to why this pyramid is so fucked up trap wise in the king's chamber.

----------

It wasn't long before I made it to the king's chamber. There was a pitfall or two along the way, but those were easily circumvented.

As for the king's chamber itself, it was massive compared to the ascending passageway. It had to be at least twenty by twenty feet in size, and at least ten feet tall.

[3/6]
>>
>>35587083
Alright, getting interesting now.
>>
>>35587202
…It was also empty. Scratch that, the place looked like it was ransacked. The sarcophagus was empty, the few urns in the room were shattered, and there wasn't a single valuable left in the place.

So then I began looking for the fake wall that led me to the REAL King's Chamber.

Yeah, the Egyptians were actually this paranoid, not that it wasn't for a good reason. The Egyptians liked making fake dead ends to trick robbers into thinking nothing was left in the room. The same "dead ends" were even made to look like they were already looted to discourage the grave robbers from looking any closer. If they did look around any closer, the grave robbers might find a wall plastered over and painted to look like the rest of the room.

Said wall was rather easy to find. After a few thousand years, it wasn't in anywhere near the same condition as the stone that surrounded it. Although it's been sitting undisturbed all that time, the paint no longer matched the stone surrounding it, and parts of it were already flaking away. It only took a moment to tear the wall down, and after doing so I saw what was behind it and sighed. Of course.

The passageway was blocked off with several tons of stone blocks, the same stone that was used to build the pyramid to begin with.

Yeah, this is also a thing that they occasionally did to deter thieves. After finding the fake wall, thieves would occasionally find the passageway blocked by several tons stone. That's right, after the King's Chamber was finished, it was completely blocked off to prevent any entry.

I could dig though it… In fact unless I want to return to the Warmaster empty-handed I have to dig through it, but it's going to burn through a grief seed. Maybe several more if the passage turns suddenly and I don't notice.

Well, at least Nero is going to make sure I get all of the grief seeds I need if I can bring anything she likes back. She loves her ancient trinkets.

----------

[4/6]
>>
>>35587229

Thank you! That's rather nice to hear, since this is before I expected it to seem at all interesting.
>>
>>35587230
Well that luckily only took two grief seeds. The passage didn't turn… just had a shitload of stone to dig through. Which was more than a little annoying when I kept wondering if the passageway turned and I didn't notice.

Ah well, at least I'm here now, and the Warmaster is going to be thrilled when she sees this. I mean, there was a lot more uncovered from Tutankhamun's tomb in the 20s, but this is still more than I've ever seen. I see several dozen golden statues of warriors, animals, and Gods ranging from a few inches to a foot and a half in height, several gems, and if I'm not mistaken, a few magical weapons. There's also a few scrolls and tablets for me to read through later.

Right, I should probably go over what happens to the treasure that I find. The Warmaster gets first pick out of anything I find, which means all the magical weapons either belonging to or enchanted by ancient magical girls end up hers, along with most, if not all of the art, gold, and jewelry that I find. I get paid for whatever the Warmaster takes from what I gather on top of what my normal salary is. Granted, I'm not quite paid anywhere near the value of the artifacts, but it's better than nothing, and much better for my health than trying to sell anything Nero wants on the black market.

Anything left over is mine to do what I want with, either to sell on the black market, give to fellow researchers to go over, or do anything else really. Most of the larger things, like the sarcophagus and the canopic shrine, I leave alone, because there's no possible way for those to fit in my inventory. The Warmaster grudgingly accepts that, on the condition that I at least look through them for anything small enough to carry.

I don't tell her that I don't look too closely when I do check them. I don't mind digging through dirt, stone, and what have you to get into the tomb, but I draw the line at sticking my hands in the remains of a dead guy. That grosses me the fuck out.

[5/6]
>>
>>35587249
You can probably see why I'm here and not on the front line murdering people and bathing in their blood like an Eversor.

Anyway, the treasure. I stuff everything I can carry into my inventory. Most of the statues look golden, but are actually wood that's been gilded. That doesn't take away from their value though, they're ancient statues belonging to an ancient civilization. They have a better value to weight ratio for researchers, thieves, and generally anyone without a magical inventory capable of holding everything nearly weightlessly. Lucky me, I'm spared the trouble of having to pick and choose what to take and get to nab everything in one trip.

After looting the rest of the room, I turn towards the canopic shrine. The shrine itself is about seven feet tall and made out of mostly gilded wood with a few statues around it. I spend a moment using my magic to make stairs out of the stone under my feet and climb up to pry the top off. Once that's done, I look inside—

Well. That's odd.

It's empty.

I don't mean "Oh, there's nothing Nero wants inside, no gold or jewelry" empty. I mean "there's nothing fucking there" empty. No canopic chest, no canopic jars, not even the dust of ancient organs on the ground. I'm the first one that's been in this room for thousands of years, so it's not like someone made off with it and left all the gold behind.

So why go through the trouble of building a Canopic Shrine if you're not going to put anything inside?

Curious, I turn to the sarcophagus. I walk up to it and start working on prying the lid off. It only takes me a few moments to take it off, thank god I'm not a Vindicare or I'd have to blow it off if I wanted any hope of seeing what's inside. I look inside and—

Well.

That's… new.

I wasn't expecting to find a magical girl sleeping inside.

What the absolute fuck?

And that's it for my first writeup! I hope those of you that read the writeups enjoyed it.
Thanks to Decu for letting me write, answering my questions, and getting you-know-who's okay for this!
Thanks Stephu, Minty, and Malal for proofreading and helping me out!
Thanks Attarou for convincing me to keep my silly idea. I don't know where this would have ended up going without your input.

Good work! I'm just going to echo Elaine on the twist at the end.

Thread has been archived, thanks for all the writeups!

Why did I ever think Oriko's hiding place would be in a reasonable location?

Putting a face to Wendy's crazy in the form of Uboa makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

And good work!

Admittedly it feels like just grabbing another convenient, recognizable symbol from Yume Nikki to use however I want, but eh. That's how Wendy was born in the first place.

Decu appears to be kill, so any lingering questions or whatever, I'm here 'til the thread dies.

How is she going to get a bite of that burger with the sewing in the way?
>>
>>35588008
I think that's why she looks frustrated.
>>
>>35588008
Obviously in between the sewing.
>>
>>35587975

On a scale of 1 to hahaha!, How would DreamyGrrl88 and Green Green react if discovered each other's identities?
>>
>>35588033
Right now it'd make a big, ugly, stabby mess. Wendy would leap right to 'Oh, so now you're fucking with me THIS way too'. Midori would be less stabby but it's still 'Oh it's Narcolesbian Cookiebitch, so now you're stalking me too'
