/tg/ - Traditional Games

Well, here it is. Thought I'd finally get around to making an AC quest!

Twitter: https://twitter.com/MercCommand

Other Quests:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valkyrian%20Mercs%20Quest (Complete)
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Cyberpunk%20Idol%20Management%20Quest (Running)
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=pararescue+witches (Running)
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=magical+girl+hunter (Complete)
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=gundam+build+fighters+quest (Complete)

Also, before we start things, I have a DISCLAIMER. This is a quest based off of the ACE COMBAT games, which are very arcadey and not simulationist at all. DO NOT expect super detailed, in depth, real world depictions of aircraft or air combat. Also, it'll probably be inevitable, but at least TRY to keep any planesperging civil and polite. With that out of the way, let's get this started!

"Whiskey Five Two, this is Oured Air Control. You are cleared to land on runway two."

"Roger that, Oured. Whiskey Five Two out." You reply as you click off your radio. Your then put your hands on the steering yoke as you guide the plane in.

"Captain, you know we have autopilot for that." Your copilot, Rosscot frowns.

"I know, but it makes me feel more like a pilot and less like a babysitter." You smile sadly. "Besides, it's not like we've done this hundreds of times already, right?"

"Whatever." Rosscot sighs leaning back, but making sure both the autopilot switch and his control yoke were in easy reach.

Landing the private jet was easy enough. Even though you were manually controlling it, though, it just wasn't the same. You didn't want to admit it, but you really missed flying a fighter. The speed, the power...

But that was all in the past.

The plane touches down at Oured International Airport without incident, with neither the corporate bigwigs on board or the tower guys noticing the plane was being controlled by human hands rather than a soulless computer. As always, your passengers all waddle off to whatever business they needed to attend to . You just head straight to the pilots' lounge while you wait for the ground crew to finish looking over your plane for the next flight.

"Excuse me, do you have a moment?"

You turn your head to see a prim and proper businesswoman. However, her lower than average height made her look more like a kid in a suit, which is an observation you quietly keep to yourself.

"Yes. What do you need?" You reply.

"I actually had a business proposition for you." The woman smiles. "You're-"

"Karla Weiss, correct?" She asks.

"That's correct." You nod, wondering what this woman was trying to peddle. "I haven't caught your name, though."

"Ah Samantha Wellings." The woman smiles. Christ, she really did look like a kid in a suit. "I represent Artemis Defense. We're actually looking for experienced pilots, and I was wondering if you would be interested in taking up a position with us."

"Sorry, I'm not interested in a desk job." You shake your head.

"Oh, I think you misunderstand me." Samantha's eyes glint. "What if I told you you'd be able to fly a fighter plane again?"

"...okay I'm interested." You concede. Was this really happening?

"All right, let me just confirm some personal details we dug up on your background check." Samantha pulls out a folder from her suitcase and opens it up. "Now, you're Osean, correct?"

You wince at this.

"Technically, I was born Belkan, but raised in Osea." You clarify. "I was born in southern Belka."

"Ah, I see." Samantha nods. The southern half of Belka was handed over to Osea and renamed North Osea shortly after you were you born. It was... not a very nice time for you.

"It shows you fought in the Circum-Pacific War between Osea and Yuktobania six years ago, as part of the Osean Air Force." Samantha continues. "What was the extent of your combat experience?"

Here's the most basic of rundowns.

Osea is a very idealistic, pacifist version of the United States.
Emmeria is kind of a weird combo of the United States and the European Union.
Yuktobania is pretty much Russia.
Belka is essentially pre-WWII Gemany with modern jet fighters.

"I'd rather not talk about it." You frown. "I saw and did a lot of things during that war."

Truth be told, you started out as a pilot trainee when the war broke out. Your first serious action was the Second Battle of Sand Island, where you had the privilege of watching your entire squadron get wiped out by those goddamn burst missiles. You almost didn't make it yourself, but you managed to eject from your mortally damaged craft just in time.

If only your comrades were as lucky as you.

"Ah, I understand." Samantha nods sympathetically and continues on. "And I understand that your father fought during the Belkan War?"

"He did." You nod.

"Oddly enough, our records don't show his current status." Samantha frowns. "Can you please fill us in?"

"He didn't survive the war." You say simply.

"Oh, I'm sorry." Samantha bites her lip.

"That's about all I know, really." You sigh. "Don't really know the specifics."

"Okay, erm, moving on." Samantha flips through a few more pages. "Is it true that you're associated with Detlef Fleisher?"

"He was my history teacher when I was in boarding school." You raise an eyebrow. "Why?"

"Well," Samantha nervously twirls a strand of her hair with her finger. "Mr. Fleisher is a rather well known Belkan Ace, and he's been rather outspoken about Belkan nationalism. You'd understand that certain employers would be nervous about associating with men like that."

"Well, I owe a lot to Detlef." You respond.

"Really?" Samantha gives you a suspicious look.

"Not in that way!" You shake your head rapidly. "I was in a really rough spot at the time. You should know how the annexation of North Osea turned out, right?"

"I do." Samantha nods.

"Yeah, it wasn't a fun time for anybody involved, especially for Belkans." You sigh. "My mom decided renounce her Belkan citizenship after the bombs dropped, and decided to stay in North Osea. Problem was, the only other Belkans who stayed were all the crazy ones. Imagine what it's like being born Belkan, but being told by EVERYBODY, your own mother included, that you're a piece of shit for it?"

"I-I see." Samantha blinks.

"Detlef was the first, the only person, to teach me there was nothing wrong with being Belkan." You say. "Now, I'm not saying Osea should hand back everything it took from Belka, but I have something to believe in, you know?"

"All right." Samantha snaps her folder closed and hands you a card. "You pass. If you're truly interested, drop by this address tomorrow morning."

"All right..." You say, taking the card. "Thanks."

"I hope you see you tomorrow, then." Samantha gives you a little salute before leaving.

Ah, well, looks like you'll have to hand in your resignation, then.

Alright, I'll ask because this seems like a relevant thread and the /acg/ on /vg/ scares me.

Let's say have no idea about anything in Ace Combat, other than Belka being a bunch of Saturday morning supervillains, squadrons upon squadrons of jets jamming in the DANGER ZONE, and that damned "Yo buddy, still alive?" quote. How do I into Ace Combat? I have a PS3, an XBox 360, and a PSP, and I know there's been Ace Combat games for all three.

Where do I begin?

Ace Combat 4, then Ace Combat 5, then Ace Combat Zero (if your PS3 isn't backward compatible, I don't care, these are the three you start with). Ace Combat X on the PSP isn't bad but I wasn't a fan of the controls. If you had a 3DS I would suggest Assault Horizon Legacy (which is actually a remake of Ace Combat 2). Avoid the 360/PS3 Assault Horizon.

After politely quitting your job as an airline pilot, you rent a hotel room for the night with what few belongings you carried with you. Among those was a laptop, which you promptly used to do a bit on online sleuthing.

Apparently, Artemis was one of the many Private Military Contractors, or PMCs, that sprung up after both Osea and Yuktobania slashed their military budgets, causing a whole slew of military bases to be closed, military personnel discharged, and equipment decommissioned. You should know, considering you were one of the many pilots kicked out when the war ended. This pretty much created a perfect storm for PMCs, considering facilities, personnel, and equipment were now all readily available and dirt cheap. Also, as a side effect of Osea and Yuktobania demilitarizing, many smaller nations started feeling a bit bolder about their military aspirations. At the same time, corporations and governments were increasingly finding the need for expendable and easily deniable shock troops for certain missions.

Again, it was a perfect storm for PMCs, and many of them, including Artemis, were aggressively hiring.

However, from what you could tell, Artemis was a relative newcomer to the market. It only started up as an entity barely two years ago, and was undergoing explosive growth, no doubt from contracts acquired from the Emmerian-Estovakian War.

All in all, they seemed pretty legit, at least on the surface. You suppose you'll find out more tomorrow.

For one, it differs enough from the rest of the series that many of the older fans thought it was more of a COD for planes than a true Ace Combat game, which is a valid enough if discussable criticism.

It also added in forced actions and a stupid amount of fire needed to kill certain enemies, all so they could show off their awesome graphics.

Finally, it was overall meh, compared to many of the other games.

It's basically Namco making Ace Combat with whatever was popular at the time so you've got yet another war between The US and Russia and DFM mode which was a glorified QTE, both of which pissed off the fans since it felt more like COD than AC.

The chopper missions were a nice addition though.

Well imagine that a series had a fun setting which would allow for wackiness without anyone taking offense. This allowed some scenarios like attacking an orbital platform that had laser defense or a submarine that literally caused steel rain.

Because Assault Horizon had "realism" in mind you couldn't have that. So no more lasers, super weapons, and definitely no one on one air jousting.

"Nugget! HEY NUGGET!"

Your eyes snap awake and dart around, immediately recognizing the all too familiar layout of an F-5 cockpit. Outside, you see the vast ocean below you and Sand Island a distant speck in the horizon.

Oh god, not this again.

"Keep flying like that, and you'll get yourself killed." One of your squadron leads says sternly.

"Aw, lighten up, Edge." Another pilot chuckles. "It's their first combat mission."

"Which is exactly why they need focus, Chopper." Edge retorts. "I'm getting contacts on radar. Estimated time until they're in range is twenty seconds."

You check your radar, trying to figure out what's headed your way.

You manage to ID the approaching enemies. There seemed to be four LCACs headed for the island, and 2 F-18 Hornets flying air cover for them. Sure, the F-18s were probably more advanced than your F-5, but you pretty certain you could beat them in a turning fight, plus you outnumbered them pretty badly.

"So what do you want to hit?" Your wingman asks.

"Cover me. We're going to splash some Hornets." You say.

"You serious?" Your wingman gasps.

"Just follow my lead."

The nice thing about having numbers on your opponent is that it meant their attention would be highly divided. You gain more altitude, and watch as the F-18s swoop down on a few of your squadronmates who are doing strafing runs on the LCACs, putting you on a perfect position to ambush the ambushers. You could try for missiles, which had longer range and stopping power, but there was a chance the Hornets could spot the lock and evade. It would certainly interrupt their attack run, but potentially rob you of a kill.

Or you could try going for guns...

AIR TO AIR (AtA): Represents a pilot's ability to lock onto aerial targets.
GUNSKILL (GUN): Represents a pilot's ability to hit their targets with a gun.

You try to match the Hornets' dives as you quickly close in, continually trying to keep your nose just ahead of the enemy craft, which were start to level out, no doubt to try and get a missile lock on your fellow pilots. As your instructors always reminded you, always shoot where the plane WILL be, not where they are. You settle your crosshairs just ahead of the trailing Hornet and pull the trigger.

Your entire craft vibrates as the cannons bark, sending bullets raining down on the plane ahead of you. The trailing Hornet is shredded apart like paper. You quickly kick your rudder, shifting your nose to the right and bringing it line with the leading Hornet. You let off another cannon burst, punching holes into the Hornet's engines and fuselage. However, the damaged craft is still airworthy, and immediately pulls off from its attack run, heading desperately back for wherever it came from. You settle your crosshairs over the fleeing craft, but you hesitate on the trigger.

>Shoot him down.

"Doesn't feel right shooting a man in the back." You admit with a sigh.

"I see..." Edge says. "I wish there were more pilots like you."

Before you can ask her what she meant she pulls away to help another group of distressed trainees. At this point, you knew what was coming next. No matter what you did, you couldn't change it.

"BURST MISSILES INCOMING!" Your AWACS controller shrieks. "ALL PLANES CLIMB!"

"YOU HEARD HIM, NUGGETS! CLIMB! CLIMB!" Edge screams.

You see the planes of your fellow trainees around you raise their noses in the air as they try to climb out of the incoming burst missile's blast radius. They won't make it. They never did.

The blast blinds you seconds before the shockwave and shrapnel tear your F-5 to pieces, leaving just the front half of the fuselage intact and tumbling through the air. Fighting both gravity, G-forces, and your failing vision, you quickly reach for your ejection lever...

...and wake up in your bed in a cold sweat.

After all these years. Even though their frequency lessened somewhat, you still got these dreams from time to time. You check your clock and scowl. You've waken up about an hour earlier than you intended. It was that annoying grey area where you were tired enough to want to go to sleep, but risking oversleeping in the process. Might as well just get started cleaning yourself up.

After a quick shower and breakfast, you briefly wonder what to do next.

Ah well, it was still pretty early, and it's not like the Circum-Pacific War Memorial had set visiting hours. You hop on a bus that headed for the park it was located in. Of course, at this hour, the bus was practically empty save for the driver who just gives you a quick glance before returning his attention to the road.

The ride is quiet and fairly short, but you wouldn't have it any other way. You really weren't in the mood to talk or be bothered. You see the all too familiar stop and get off, trudging your way through the park until you finally see the Memorial.

It was a relatively simple thing. A large stone wall engraved with the names of every Osean soldier that died in the Circum Pacific War. Up above flew three flags. Two of them were the Osean and Yuktobanian national flags, to signify the lasting peace forged between the two previously warring nations. In the center was a white flag bearing the crest of Razgriz, those mysterious heroes that brought an end to the war.

You walk down to the familiar spot that held the names of the 108th Fighter Squadron, your old unit, and one that was virtually wiped out during the war. You were hospitalized after the Second Battle of Sand Island, and by the time you were fit for duty again, the remaining four pilots in the squadron were shot down, so you were transferred. As far as you knew, you were the only survivor.

"Hey." You say awkwardly to the wall. "I know it's been a while since I last came. Been busy and all that. But, well, it looks like I got a shot to fly a fighter plane again, and I'm taking it."

Only silence answers you.

"Um, anyways, I got something for you guys. It's not much honestly, but this visit was kind of spur of the moment."

You take a bottle of cheap whiskey you managed to smuggle out of the hotel and set it at the base of the wall.

By this point, the sun was starting to rise higher into the sky, and more and more people were starting to file in. You quickly shuffle out, accidentally bumping into a young woman.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" The dark haired woman blinks.

"No worries, it was my fault anyways." You say apologetically and pause. "Have we met before?"

"No, I don't believe we have." The woman smiles sadly and continues on her way. You meanwhile call for a taxi to take you to Artemis. As you wait for it to arrive, you turn back to see the woman setting a bouquet of roses down on the wall right next to your own little offering.

Could she be...?

Your train of thought is interrupted by a loud honk, and you turn to see your taxi has already arrived. Damn, that was fast. You enter the vehicle and hand the driver the card Samantha gave you. The driver grunts, turns on the meter, and sets off.

He warns you the drive is going to be a bit of a long one, so you might as well get some rest. Instead, you dial Mom's number. She should be awake by this time. However, your finger freezes over the CALL button, uncertain of whether to go through with it or not. You and Mom never really saw eye to eye...

You sigh. Might as well get this over with. She'd eventually call you, anyways. You hit the CALL button and raise the phone to your ear.

"Oh, Karla!" Mom says with a bit of surprise. "This is rather unusual, you calling me so early in the morning like this. Has something happened?"

You pause, unsure if you really wanted to tell her you were into piloting again. She absolutely FREAKED OUT when she heard you got shot down, and even tried to sue the government to get you discharged, which was a whole lot of embarrassment you really didn't need. After that, she was extremely disapproving of you getting into anything even vaguely related to combat.

"Ah, nothing much, really." You say, laughing to cover up your lie. "The charter company's really been working me to death. Lots of flights springing up between Osea and Yuktobania now."

"I see. Well, it seems you're doing well, then." Mom says.

"Actually, I was wondering how things were doing back home." You say, deflecting the subject back to her.

"Oh, nothing much. The money you've sent back is more than enough to live comfortably on, but I'm worried you're sending too much of your paycheck to me. You're still eating regularly, right?"

"Mom, private charter tends to pay its pilots more than the regular carriers." You chuckle. "Besides, you wouldn't need so much money if you'd actually accept Dad's pension payout."

"I told you before." Mom says sternly. "I will NOT accept money from a corrupt government!"

"Um, I'll think about it." You say.

"Well, I hope to see you soon then! Ta ta!" Mom says cheerfully, as if neither you had ever gotten into an argument at all.

Seriously, parents could be so weird.

"Yo, we're here." The driver grunts. You look up to see that you're at one of the many decommissioned airbases situated just outside Oured. However, instead of the Oured national flag flying over the base, you see a flag bearing the Artemis logo.

The taxi then comes up to the checkpoint leading the base's entrance. A guard comes up to confront you, and you hand him your ID. He briefly checks it against a list and nods at his partner, who opens the gate. You're led to what should be the main administration facility for the base. There, you see Samantha waiting for you. You pay the driver with a generous tip and exit the taxi.

"Ah! So you decided to come!" Samantha says happily. "Welcome to Artemis' headquarters! If you'd like, I can show you a tour of the base, first!"

"Um, sure." You blink.

"Can you show me who's in charge of this joint?" You ask.

"Why of course!" Samantha nods. "Just follow me!"

She leads you into the main admin building and up the top floor, where the office for the Base Commander is usually situated. She stops and knocks on the front door.

"WHO IS IT?!" A very loud and gruff voice bellows from withing, making the door rattle just from the sound.

"It's me, Sam." Samantha says. "I have one of the new recruits here."

"AW HELL, THEN SHOW 'ER IN!"

You just give Samantha a look.

"He's... very excitable." Samantha chuckles and opens the door. "You'll get used to it."

She stands aside for you to enter, and you walk in slowly, to be greeted by an elderly man, with greying hair and mustache, and a very mean looking eyepatch.

"WELCOME TO ARTEMIS!" The huge man wraps one of his tree trunk arms around you in a crushing hold.

"Um, thank you sir?" You croak. "B-but I haven't officially joined yet-"

"What!?" The man blinks. "Well we can't have that! SAM! Get those dern contract paper thingamajigs up here PRONTO! We got forms to sign!"

"On it, sir!" Samantha snaps a salute and shuffles off.

"Oh my, where are my manners?" They chortles. "The name's General Treister, Commander in Chief of Artemis Security's military branch!"

"Um, nice to meet you, sir." You squeak, clearly overwhelmed by the sheer brashness of Treister's personality.

"Well, while we're waitin' fer Sam to get back with them documents, ya got any questions about what we do up here?" Treister says with a big grin on his face.

"So, what exactly does Artemis do?" You ask.

"HAH! THAT'S EASY!" Treister laughs. "We're in the business of FREEDOM!"

"F-freedom?" You pause.

"No, not freedom, FREEDOM!" Treister corrects you. "One score years ago, I helped LIBERATE Ustio with these two hands and this one eye! And it was AMAZING! Planes flying above going pewpewpew and bombs dropping and going BOOOM, and we LIBERATED THE LIVING BAJEEZUS out of that country! And I thought, FUCK THIS IS AWESOME. IT'D BE REALLY AMAZING IF I COULD DO THIS IN THE FUTURE AND GET PAID FOR IT. AND GUESS WHAT? I'm TOTALLY DOIN' THAT NOW!"

"What he means to say." Sam walks in with a large stack of papers. "Is that we take job offers from governments and private entities that need military muscle. Only internationally recognized entities, mind you. However, the scope of our duties really isn't all that different from any other military."

"I see." You nod and look a the contract. "I just need to sign this?"

"Yep!" Treister says happily. "Paid by the kill! Prove you've got what takes and you can get access to the best gear money can buy!"

Well hell, it's not like you were going to get any other opportunity. You quickly sign the contract.

"All right!" Treister whoops. "Sam, get her one of them starter planes and we'll get this ball rolling!"

"Yes sir!" Sam nods. "Come on, Karla, this way!"

Samantha then leads you a nearby hangar. Inside, you see a row of planes...

"Aren't these planes a little... old?" You blink. What you saw in front of you was an F-4 Phantom, F-5 Tiger, Mig-21 Fishbed, and J-35 Draken. All rather old aircraft.

"Well, like the General said, if you want the best we have to offer, you'll have to prove you deserve it." Samantha smiles. "Anyways, all these craft have been upgraded to modern standard, so don't let the looks fool you!"

Well, you suppose she had a point there.

Result of improper training. The US military had adopted a "dogfighting is dead" philosophy, and made it against the rules to practice it. So yeah, when they got into dogfights they didn't do too hot. But then the US military realized the mistake, and took measures to fix it. Those measures worked, and put them back on top. One of those measures is kinda famous. It was called Fighter Weapons School. Maybe you've heard of it?

Sure thing, buddy. I suggest you look at the loss ratios yourself.
And then take a look at how they changed when the gun was added. They didn't
And then look at the kill/loss when proper training was implementedIt was much better
>>35602883
Don't forget that the Navy didn't even have cannons on their F-4s and performed way better than the Air Force.

Well, the F-5 certainly had some nostalgic qualities, but it really reminded you of some pretty bad memories. The Mig? Yukeshit. Fuck the Yukes. The J-35? Eeeeeeh, you weren't feeling it with that.

The F-4, however, you could easily identify it. Sure, it wasn't the most maneuverable of craft, but it had a lot of engine power and firepower. And it had a well proven combat record.

"I guess I'll choose the Phantom." You say.

"Excellent choice." Sam nods and looks behind you. "Oh, and it looks like your wingman is here! How fortunate!"

"Hm?" You turn around to see a girl hardly older than you were, in a flightsuit signifying that she was a pilot.

"Hey there!" She gives you a wide, friendly grin. "Looks like we'll be flying together from now on, huh?"

Yep. Emmerian. Definitely Emmerian.

Dear god what did you get yourself into?

>And that's it for tonight! I have to say, this was a pretty great start for a quest, and I really enjoyed it. >Godlike Damage
It can protect its pilot from 23mm AA guns, but it can and has been shot up and removed from the game by them. Further, its heavy armor is outdated and only protects against small arms and SPAAGs, not the real threat, SAMs. Further, by going low and slow it decreases its survivability tenfold. That's why they were the most damaged and lost craft of Desert Storm and why they were pulled away from the front.
By going low and slow, the A-10 puts itself in the range of MANPADs and AA guns. If you instead flew at altitude like a regular plane, you are above their fire completely.
>Tear through Soviet Tanks
Only by virtue of the Maverick Missile, not the GAU-8, which has been able to reasonably destroy tanks for the entirity of its existence. The Maverick is better suited on a plane that isn't raped by an enemy IADS.

The A-10 is great if you're up against people who don't have real military hardware to work with.

Of course, if you think that's all we'll ever be fighting, you deserve to be the first who dies at the front line against a properly equipped military.
>>
>>35602970
Huh. Best example in media that I can think of, for co-pilot that wasn't just the guy in the back would be Razor on SWAT Kats.
I can't think of another actually noteworthy example. Best I can think of are the handful of 'was a bro, had a family, died. Nooooooo' types, but that's been used enough to be stale.
