A.T.B 2017, 25th of September
Area 11(Former Nation of Japan), 11:30 AM

You are a fresh faced trainee in the Holy Britannian Army, eight weeks into her training to become a Knightmare Frame pilot and are currently on a military transport bus with at least thirty other trainees headed to...well actually you have no where you’re going.

The bus is pretty cramped and you’re thankful you’d taken the seat at the far back near the window, the only girl on the whole bus with a seat to herself. That may be because you’re the ONLY girl on the bus. Everyone else aboard are males ranging from around your age to much older.

Quite a few stare at you, though not for the reasons boys normally stare at young girls. Their eyes bore into you and make your insides crawl, as if they've already peeled away your facade and seen through your mask. None of them speak to you directly, but their eyes are practically screaming at you.

>“You don’t belong here”

You know that. That’s precisely why you joined in the first place.

The bus shakes slightly as you make sure your amber hair is tied back and look down at yourself. Your tight olive drab uniform feels strange on you, despite having worn it so long. It’s identical to everyone else’s, save for the name stitched on the front.

Everyone else has their real name out for all to see, but you enlisted under a false name, a fake identity. Despite knowing what could have happened if you used your real name, it still makes you uncomfortable pretending to be someone you’re not.

But then again...maybe that’s because you need to become someone you're not to get what you want.

So what’s your fake name?

>Xinlu Kuu

You tried to pick a name as far and away from your real one as possible, though you might have gone a bit too foreign with it. It's obvious from your appearance that you're not from the Chinese Federation or an Eleven, however that hasn't stopped people from assuming you're of mixed blood. If it weren't for your papers stating you were just a regular commoner Britannian you might have not been able to make it in...

You try to keep your mind off such unpleasant possibilities by looking out the window at the scenery outside, but find there's not much to see. For the last few hours it's been nothing but thick, shadowy woods and the occasional stream. Despite the placid feeling you get by staring at the green and orange trees as the bus rushes past them, your mind keeps drifting back to a more unpleasant topic. Trying desperately to keep your mind occupied you quickly tune your ears to the talk going on in the seat in front of you.

“Man this sucks, we've been driving for hours.” One of recruits whines under his breath.

“Any idea where they're taking us? Getting shipped off without being told where we’re going is pretty creepy, I keep feeling they're gonna pull over, kick us out, and tell us to walk home because we're failures....” The recruit asks nervously, making you wonder if that could happen until the other recruit speaks..

"Don't be such a baby, the Britannian Army wouldn't do something like that. If we all sucked we would have just gotten kicked out as soon as we didn't meet the cut. If anything our training is probably getting accelerated, it's been nearly two months since the Special Administration Zone flopped and that terrorist Zero promised to return and 'liberate the Japan'."

>(1/2)
>>
>>35609658
Not at all, the Japanese culture still exists, it's just there's a heavy "Britannian" culture overlayed ontop of it, if you submit to it, call yourself inferior and bow down, you become an "Honorary" Britannian, at that point name gaps might come into play.

But otherwise, nope, still all Japanse.

"Of course, do you really think the courts care about a bunch of Elevens? Trying to send someone to prison for killing one of them would be like trying to accuse a man of murder for stepping on a cockroach. The Zone was a waste of time to begin with, it's revolting that anyone in the Royal Family would support something like that."

“Princess Euphemia's glad no one tried to kill her over it, if not the militants then all those filthy Elevens who didn't realize her plan was a flop from the start! Well I’m just glad to have a crack at those filthy terrorists when they raise their ugly heads. I mean it’s as black and white as a fight can get...get it? Huh? Because they’re called the Black-”

“Oh shut up. I don’t care about that morality bullshit, I’m just in this for the paycheck.”

You bite down on your tongue and do your best to tune them out, realizing that listening to the conversation did the exact opposite of what you hoped it would. Is this why people joined the military? For personal gain and the pleasure of killing others? The reason why you joined the military isn't a particular noble or selfless one, so maybe you're not in a position to judge. After all you joined because you want…

>Strength, Revenge, and the Truth

You try to pin the exact reason why you joined the military, but it doesn't come to you. There was so many reasons why you joined that it's hard to just state one.

However every reason you have ties back to HIM.

The man who lied to you, used, you, caused the death of your father and the suicide of your mother, and nearly drove you mad with fear and grief. You know who he is and want nothing more then to make him suffer in every way imaginable but you couldn't. Not only were you too weak to even think about laying a figure on him, but you had no idea why he did the things he did to you.

You don't give a damn about justice, you just want the power to exact your revenge and strangle whatever mad, empty reasonings he has for the misery and suffering he's caused you and countless others.

The bus comes to a sudden halt and you look up to see the high concrete walls of what could only be a proper Britannian military installation.

The bus doors open and a drill instructor steps aboard with a rather fearsome look on his face. Everyone, including yourself, quickly jumps to their feet and snaps a salute, the weeks of threats and reprimands burning respect for your superiors into your bodies. You fumble with your seatbelt stand up late, catching a glare from the instructor that sends chills down your spine

“Welcome to Odake Base, meat! You are all to leave your bags and follow me to the Knightmare Frame garage, we’ll be conducting a aptitude test immediately! Questions will be answered later!” The sergeant barks, warranting a few inaudible mutters of irritation from the recruits. You catch what the two young men in front of you say.

“Why are we being given an aptitude test here? Shouldn't they have done that before sending us out here?”

“Man this is a raw deal, we haven’t even eaten yet…”

After stepping off the bus you fall into forming lines with the rest of the trainees and march across the base towards the hangers, passing enlisted soldiers and a few construction frames.

Walking around in lines always made you think of preschool, only instead of learning your ABCs and how to play nice with the other kids you’re learning how to break wrists, and pilot killing machines.

After a few minutes of walking you all come to a large open hanger with rows of Knightmare Frames lined up against the walls. RPI-11 Glasgows, the first Knightmares mass produced by the Britannia for active combat service.

They’re seven years outdated and have been phased out of service, but are still kept for training purposes.

It’s funny, you were always pretty terrible when it came to machines. But you seem to be pretty good around Knightmare Frames. In fact in the simulators and training exercises you scored pretty high, you specifically excelled in..

>Defense (Lower rolls required to block attacks and use defencive systems successfully. May allow the learning of special defencive techniques you otherwise couldn’t master)

>Maneuverability

The early training you got in boot camp was hard, but the running and exercises were the easy parts. You were something of a gynmnist and a swimmer before you joined, so you already had an excellent physique. The weeks of yelling, threats, and brutal training honed your reflexes and when you finally got your hands on the control of a Knightmare, you found you could leave the other recruits in the dust.

Seeing as all the Glasgows are the same, you take the nearest one, #5, and board it. Sliding into the cockpit you slide in the blank starter key, enter the password and take a small breather as the rust bucket of a machine boots up.

Eventually the screens flash and you're greeted by the familiar status screen of your console. As routine you check everything over and find the Glasgow seems armed for a standard training exercise, the usual pair of fixed Slash Harkens on the chest, a pair of folding Tonfas on the arms, and the stock standard RA-57K 57mm Coilgun with the fixed 80mm grenade launcher.

You don't see any indicator that the rounds are paint rounds, but this is a training exercise so you assume that's a given. Just as you're about to raise the Glasgow to it's feet and form up, you stop yourself when you notice the power level of the Knightmare is REALLY low. A mere 25 minutes left on the Energy Filler.

Not only that, but there appears to be a malfunction with the ejection system of all things. Opening your cockpit you stand up and call out to the Drill Sargent watching the other recruits form their Glasgows into rows.

"Uh, excuse me sir? My unit appears to be-"

"Sit back into your cockpit and take your place in the line! All these units have been cleared for this exercise. If there is anything wrong with your unit, then it has been artificially induced for the sake of simulation purposes!"

Getting another spine ripping glare from the Drill Sargent you sit back down...

Being lone wolf in Code Geass is essentially impossible until you're into Seventh Generation Knightmare frames, and even then those run out of power in serious engagements exceedingly fast.

Without the backing of a nation that can manufacture Energy Fillers, or a proper way to extract them, it's essentially impossible to sustainable be lone-wolf, even less so due to the nature of Seventh Generation Knightmare frames.

Depends on the exact point in the time line. You have Orpheus from Code Geass Oz the Reflection (spin-off between seasons) being mostly a lone wolf, although with support from a terrorist organization, not a superpower.
>>
>>35610327
>You don't see any indicator that the rounds are paint rounds
Watch as those are real rounds.
>>
>>35610393

To be fair, VOTOMS isn't so much lone wolf as "knowing that dodging is important in a Real-series" and "surviving ridiculous odds". It doesn't feature any snowflake mecha, nor does it have a limitless power source. In fact, the one time there's a montage to building the protagonist's next mecha upgrade (he goes through mechs like tissue paper, they typically don't last more than three episodes before they're unrepairable), it gets wrecked in 40 minutes.

It makes for a nice change, and reinforces the protagonist is a good pilot instead of someone who crutches on his machine's performance.
>>
>>35610232
It doesn't happen during the main Code Geass TV series but equivalent things have happened in spin-offs. Just like the Votoms reference here is also to something that happened outside of the original TV show.

>>
>>35610534

I really enjoy the fact that they seem to remember that "protagonist cannot die" doesn't always equal "succeeds at everything forever", actually making him struggle against others.

And, you know, fuck up, get his AT wrecked, and having to get it replaced.

>>
>>35610564
I liked that, but they do get a bit extreme with the sorts of things Chirico survives. Watch the prequels and you'll see how crazy that can get.
>>
>>35610327
Getting your Glasgow to your feet you deploy the Landspinners and quickly roll your way outside the hanger where the others have gathered in rows on the edge of the base perimeter where a rather noticeable hole in the wall is.

Immediately upon sliding into place a voice booms over the nearby speaker system, picked up by the Glasgows external audio pickup.

"There is a clearing with hills 2 kilometers through the woods straight ahead of you. You are to break through the enemy line and return with your Knightmare still operational. Do not be lax because this is a simulation!"

Silence falls and you slowly watch your energy filler drain away...

"START!"

The booming voice prompts all the trainees to bolt forward, sending up dust and dirt as they peel their way across the concrete and into the soft Japanese earth before plowing their way through the forest. All the vegetation is pretty light so you push right through it without any issues, it'd take a pretty thick tree to completely stop a Knightmare.

Your visibility is garbage moving through the woods and as you move you hear local chatter on the radio, it's from the other recruits.

"What the hell's going on?"

"How should I know? Maybe they're just giving us shit because we're new..."

With 20:00 minutes left on your battery you break through the forest with the rest of the recruits and find yourself rushing through a clearing. Immediately you spot them, thirty Glasgows with red shoulders in a 30 meter line across the low rolling hills. They stand their, Factspheres pulsing and weapons ready as they guard the flags that you're probably supposed to pass through before turning back to base.

The other recruits rush ahead of you, eager to get some shots off.

"Alright, let's give these guys a good scare! This simulation's gonna be boring enough firing blanks!"

You're about ready to rush ahead with everyone when one of the Glasgows on the hill fires a shot from it's cannon. The sound screeches through the air and hits the foremost Glasgow in front of you.

The shot tears though the torso and punches through the cockpit, causing an explosion that causes you're whole suit to shake. Immediately the trainees around you start screeching to a halt, only to fall over as bullets rip through their shits and end their lives.

Screams to stop immediately flood the comms as you fellow trainees panic and shatter, coilgun rounds, cannons, and even some missiles flying all around you, quickly filling the once peaceful clearing with the sound of war.

Your heart thunderers in your chest but you keep moving. If you turn back you're going to die, your best option is to break through, but how?

The most dangerous enemies in VOTOMS, which as mentioned earlier served as an inspiration to Code Geass' mech movement, were the Red Shoulders. These guys were fucking legends and were basically the "you have fucked up now" button. To use a Dark Souls comparison, they're the Dickwraiths. They show up out of nowhere, you're like a new player fresh out of the tutorial by comparison, they murder everything and everyone in the nearby environment and then they move on.

Except unlike Dickwraiths, they use completely vanilla stock ATs instead of some highly customized loadout, and the only way you could differentiate them from anyone else is that their right shoulder was painted red.

The other trainees are mostly dead or scattered by now, from the thirty Glasgows that came in here, only about 12 are left including you. However there's a group of five that are dodging around and sticking very close together. Maybe they're just trying to find an opening, or maybe they're hoping that if they run out of power they won't get shot?

You could easily have used them to draw aggro and busted through the lines with ease, but the idea turns your stomach. Why the hell is this happening? Why is everyone dying? Why won't they just stop! You don't bother wasting your breath or valuable time trying to contact them over the radio, instead you speed forward and make your way towards the left most side of the hills that seems to have the fewest troops.

As you approach they begin to open fire on you with everything they have. You begin to maneuver and spray your 57mm in the hopes of breaking through in one piece.

57mm coilgun rounds and 100mm cannon shots fly towards you, but you're smart enough then to just charge straight at a fortified position. You move as erratically as your hands and the clunky Glasgow will allow, doing your best to avoid getting shot while keeping your speed and momentum.

Your own gunfire doesn't hit shit due to your wild movements, but you come close enough that it spooks one into ducking behind the cover of the hill, allowing you to rush up and over.

As you get some air and soar over the head of the foolish red shoulder, you see the red flags you need to pass through and your hands begin to tremble. You're so close to escaping this nightmare, but a thought hits you:

You could potentially kill some of these bastards and open up a way out for the other surviving trainees. It's the right thing to do, but your fearful mind is telling you that it's suicide. You're the only one on the other side of the line, you'll be lucky to get across the flags and back to base, it'd take a miracle to kill more then a couple of these armed nuts without getting turned into swiss cheese.

With your power at 18% and your ammunition still pretty go, you hit the ground and...

>Make a beeline for the flags, full speed! (Power Consumption: High)

Letting out a scream of outrage and terror you firing your coilgun at the Glasgows in front of you and rip them to pieces before they can so much as get a shot off at you. Your finger doesn't leave the trigger as you turn, spraying 57mm bullets across the hills while madly tapping firing primer for the overslung grenade launcher, raining 80mm explosives across the hills.

You manage to cripple and outright kill some of the closer Glasgows and scatter enough of them that at least five other Glasgows bust through and make a beeline for the flags. A sharp blaring fills your ears as you look down and see that you burned through all your ammo helping the others. Chucking your empty weapon aside you turn to run away as rocket and cannon rounds begin to rain down around you, the remaining Red Shoulders ignoring the others and focusing all their fire on you.

None of the other recruits so much as look back as they tear through the flacks and dive into the trees, cutting through the obscuring brush and circling back around to the base. You do your best to try and evade the hellish barrage as you flee towards the flags.

Weather because of the bit of dust thrown up by your grenades or the grace of god, you manage to blaze through the flags and crash into the woods with only a few glancing shots of Knightmare, one in particular grazing the roof of your cockpit and filling with ears with a sharp metallic noise that fills your panicked mind with the imagery of a metal jawed grim reaper.

Your heart hammers in your chest and sweat streaks down your face, your green eyes dilated in life saving fear as your knuckles begin to go white from clutching the control sticks so hard. Just as you begin to think you're safe you hear rather close gunfire and feel the explosions of rockets shake your Knightmare.

You're begin pursued! You don't think it's all of them, maybe just a few. But even if it's just two you're out of ammo and just down to your Slash Harkens and Tonfas. The woods are too thick to properly fight in, so much so that you couldn't see into the clearing until you were completely out of it. If you break out into the clearing outside the base you could wait and try and ambush them if they come out after you. Alternatively you could just head straight back to base like all the other, sane trainees probably have.

The opening in the perimeter wall is in viewing distance now, you can see three other Glasgows collapsed in heaps on the spot where you all assembled on your arrival.

Speeding forward your heart jumps a beat as gunfire fills your ears, your rear cameras showing two banged up red shouldered Glasgows racing after you. You try to weaver and evade but the right leg is giving you difficulties. The red shoulder holding the 100mm cannon peels to a stop, takes aim, and fires at you just mere meters before your reach the welcoming concrete of the base...

>>35612010

They are pretty neat, but the main issue is that they have weapons for arms. This means we can't extend our ammo capacity with whatever we find on the battlefield, and they present a larger profile for people to shoot at or accidentally hit. At that point, we'd be completely defenseless save for the pitifully short-ranged Slash Harken.

Also, I doubt we can achieve our goal of truth-powered strengthvengeance if we're off dicking around in Europe.

>>
>>35612094

That's not what I said. I never said we needed to go into melee combat, I'm saying that having guns for hands means you can't loot anything off the battlefield to extend your ammo capability or take advantage of the human-like profile of our Knightmare Frame.

On top of that, having a melee weapon and the ability to wield any kind of Knightmare Frame compatible ranged weapon on top of that is, to me, a big step up over having no melee capability and huge targets for hands. Having the ability and never using it is better than wishing you had it when you really need it. That's why the blade tonfas are built into the unit as a sidearm as opposed to having nothing at all.

Plus, if we were using a Panzer Hummel in this situation, we'd be fucked beyond measure because we'd be out of ammo in a mech that can't do close quarters combat.

>if we were using a Panzer Hummel in this situation, we'd be fucked beyond measure because we'd be out of ammo in a mech that can't do close quarters combat

Nigger if we were in this situation with a panzer hummel the red shoulders would be blown up, not beat up. Also, you act like you need a weapon to do melee combat, but a hummel's got superior mass, superior armor, two slash harkens, and two giant fucking beatsticks for arms! You mean aside from the fact that the Red Shoulders' entire specialty is going fast, hitting hard, and being better than you? It's a fucking miracle we managed to get through the lines without losing an arm.

There's a reason the Panzer Hummel isn't more widespread, which is that speed is incredibly fucking instrumental to survival here. It's not Gundam, where you can take a few hits where you're in trouble. If you get hit in a Knightmare Frame you might as well have paper mache for armor because it's not gonna stop those rounds, especially not with the cockpits being as huge as they are and sticking out of the unit.

That last part, especially, is why you don't want to stand still or go slower. The Hummel could be armored with solid diamonds and they'd just drop a zook round in the cockpit, GG no re.

>SLASH HARKEN

Gritting your teeth you pull up your landspinners and smash your Glasgow's bare feet against the concrete, throwing up sparks as you grind to a violent halt and filling the air with a sound that makes nails on chalkboard sound like Beethoven First Symphony. The red shoulders lower your weapons, seeing as you're on the spot everyone else is, but you don't so much as hesitate as you pull the firing trigger and unleash your harkens in the two killers.

Being stationary the harkens hit them with ease, punching through their chests and causing their Yggdrasil Drives to detonate from impact. A dark smile spreads across your face as you notice that their cockpits didn't eject when their suits exploded. Seems like you weren't the only one with an intentionally defective suit.

The screen of your Glasgow goes black as your power drops to zero, barely leaving you enough secondary power left to open your cockpit. Your whole body shakes as you sit in your chair, watching the forest for any signs of the other enemies. None come and eventually you catch enough of your breath to climb down from your suit.

As you walk over to the other recruits Glasgows to see if they're alright, you spot the Drill Sargent walking out with a handful of armed men, looking over the carnage and marking things off on a check board like it was routine.

"Sargent! We were-"

"Caught in a terrible training accident, truly one that will go down in the manuals as a terrible sight to behold. It's a shame that those other pilots didn't realize what was going on until it was too late." The Drill Sargent looks up from his clip board with a smug, almost eerily familiar smile that makes your head begin to pound.

"What are you talking about? That wasn't an accident!"

"You're probably too shaken up to properly remember what happened, just sit down with the others and the medics will see to you in a minute..."

Exactly. And unlike the Hummel, they're fast enough to get away with it. You could pilot a Hummel and be a slow fat bastard with a giant glaring weakpoint for anything that approaches you from not-the-front.

Or you could be anything else and be a fast motherfucker with a giant glaring weakpoint that is now vastly harder to hit.

The Hummel isn't awful, for an artillery-type it's pretty okay. Just stand away where they can't approach you from the side or back, in the back of the formation, and shell the fuck out of them. But we're the speed-centric pilot. That's what we picked at char gen, that's what we excel at. A Hummel is a death trap to us because of the speed issue. It plays directly against our strengths instead of working with them, which is what literally any other model Knightmare Frame would instead cooperate with.
>>
>>35612637
Well the EU went full retard politically instead, so what can you do.

I mean at no point did they attempt to seize Japan to get McGuffin power source. At least China tried with the Japanese guy in the first series, instead the EU were happy staying in a deadlocked war, which they were pretty much guaranteed to lose.

Nor was there any indication that they helped fund a terrorist organization in the heartland of the very enemy they were at war with. I mean funding extremist groups is rule 1 in modern war.

Then there's the whole "let's treat the Japanese refugees as suicide bombs with super expensive knightmares."

>you could pilot a Hummel and be a slow fat bastard

We are the perfect person to drive a Phummel because we're good at making shit go fast, which mitigates its most glaring weakness. And besides, do you think the fucks from the other armies are good enough to cockpit snipe us, especially at the range the hummel operates at? I agree that we'll be weak to sniper units and ambushes, but we'll be fucking great at everything else.

Maybe, but putting that much ordinance in one Knightmare would make most quartermasters balk. It'd have to be signed up by someone higher up.

Then there's also the noble party, in which every EU noble was smug, arrogant douche-bags.

No, I'm in Code Geass. And when I was watching the fights in Code Geass, I would usually be able to say,

"Wow. These fucks would be screwed if somebody brought a proper gun."
>>
>>35612812

The problem is that we'll be perpetually outmatched by anyone who specializes in the same thing (literally every enemy ace and most of ours too, for good measure) while they hit just as hard and go faster than we can keep up with. There's also the issue that we'd be deadlocked in something that runs behind about three generations on the rest of the KF lines. Instead, specializing in that speed would mitigate snipers and most ambushes as well, as you'd still need to actually hit us when our preferred MO is "go really, blindingly fast".

I'm also pretty sure that if we brought a bazooka with us, we'd be able to hit nearly as hard.

It takes every remaining fiber of your self control not to run over and force feed the Drill Sargent the clip board he's holding. Your anger begins to fade as the adrenaline begins to slowly die in your veins, exhaustion taking over as your sweat begins to chill on your skin.

Practically collapsing against the side of one of the collapsed Glasgow's, you look over and see that out of the four other Glasgows that arrived three of the pilots are alive, with one being rushed away on a stretcher as the medics arrive. Part of you feels glad knowing that you helped some of the others get away from that hellish nightmare, that you got out with not only your life but some new found strength as well.

However as happy as your actions make you, your mind immediately goes back to the battle. The screaming, the gunfire, all the killing and death, you just want to forget...to forget....

Your eyes begin to droop and sleep nearly takes you there, but the commanding, almost overpowering phrase that echoes over and over again in your mind sends a surge of fear through you. Feeling yourself beginning to slip you begin to frantically pat yourself down in search of your medication. By the time the medics arrive you'd already ripped open your shirt and pulled out a small injector from between your cleavage.

Putting it to your neck, you shoot yourself up and immediately feel all drowsiness leave your system as a overwhelming pain shoots through your body. You fall onto your side, writing around on the ground as you begin to claw the sides of your head in a desperate plot to cope with the pain.

The medics rush over and demand what's wrong but you can't answer them. You can't speak, you can't move, all you can do is lie on the ground, shake, and remember.

You have to remember, you have too...

>All the bullet dodging in that show is plot armor

Take a wild guess what would have happened. Really.

On top of that, your main argument is that our talents compensate for the dropped speed, but wouldn't anything like an autocannon become vastly inaccurate if you don't stand still to aim it?

Finally, the Panzer Hummel did appear in Code Geass' second season. As you might imagine, it did not in fact save the day or do anything significant and instead jobbed hard to everything with a speed design philosophy.

The design philosophy for the Panzer Hummel does not work. If it did, they would have made more. If the results it produced weren't shit, we'd have gotten more of those. But it didn't, and the results speak for themselves. It's shit.

>OH WAIT

Sorry, sorry, I got caught up in keeping up with posts.

All in all, given how insanely maneuverable most Knightmares are, focusing on mobility is probably the best option since you all chose Maneuverability as a focus.

Also, on Panzer Hummels, they're essentially Pseudo Knightmare frames, barely a step up from a take. They have lots of armor and long ranged weapons, but their speed and maneuverability are absolute trash. They're a danger because they're deployed in numbers and set up in situations where Britannian Knightmares are forced to approach through vulnerable wide open areas.

Since the E.U canonically wasn't doing so well you can guess that this the Panzer Hummels weren't very flexible in their usage.

If you guys decide you want a Hummel, just about everything besides Gun Ru's are gonna spin donuts around you.

The impression I'm getting from the EU OVA is that Sutherlands were still the backbone of the Britannian army, with the Gloucesters being used by elite units and officers in lesser numbers.
>>
>>35613237

He hasn't said anything that hasn't already been addressed in the thread, though.
>>
>>35613237
Panzer Hummels are still dangerous mind you, especially in numbers and when it comes to defending. That's why the E.U has last as long as they did, however on the offensive they're easy to take down when they move out from proper defensive locations, which explains the stalemate.

Gun Ru's are just a slightly step up, well armed, dirt cheap, and way more mobile then the Hummel. Still shit, but the Chinese field them in such huge numbers killing one just be a drop in the bucket.

They're useful, but not so much for what you guys will probably want to do. Anyway, back to posting for me.
>>
>>35613152
>Take a wild guess what would have happened. Really.
They would have been blown the fuck out. Of course, I didn't write the show, so this will never happen.

>On top of that, your main argument is that our talents compensate for the dropped speed, but wouldn't anything like an autocannon become vastly inaccurate if you don't stand still to aim it?
My main argument is that better armor and better guns (remember, the autocannon is still an automatic) shits on better speed/melee and worse guns. A phummel pilot that focuses on speed will just help mitigate the weakness.

>Finally, the Panzer Hummel did appear in Code Geass' second season. As you might imagine, it did not in fact save the day or do anything significant and instead jobbed hard to everything with a speed design philosophy.
It was killing the shit out of Gloucesters. I've rewatched the scene many times. The battle only turned against the Europeans because Suzaku showed up.

The design philosophy for the Panzer Hummel does not work. If it did, they would have made more. If the results it produced weren't shit, we'd have gotten more of those. But it didn't, and the results speak for themselves. It's shit.
The EU lost the war because it lacked main characters and scientific geniuses. I never said that the Panzer Hummel could beat, say, Lancelot; I merely asserted that the show's conceit of melee mechs is stupid, and that our character, while still at low-level, could make a Phummel work much better than a Glasgow or Gloucester. If we get access to something, say, 7th generation or higher, then fine. I won't object to that over a 4th generation machine, even if it has a better design philosophy.

Yet in the actual show, it jobs like a motherfucker to every other design philosophy. That's a bit of a problem with your argument, that single scene could be the exception that proves the rule.
>>
>>35613333
>The EU lost the war because it lacked main characters and scientific geniuses

Out of universe and at the time, but in retrospect they do have some of those in the Code Geass OVA now. The problem seems to be more of a dysfunctional democracy incapable of using its resources properly, rather than not trying to counter the Britannian advantage (the Alexander is basically a response to that) .

As for melee mecha being stupid, well...it's quite unrealistic, but the internal logic can be followed through the speed vs. armor sliding scale already discussed before. Whether we want to follow that or not, I think we can make it work with either kind of robot

You're absolutely exhausted but sleep refuses to come to you, your senses feeling dull after sharpness you felt from your adrenaline fueled fight for survival.

Eventually one of the medics approaches you.

"Are you feeling alright Trainee Xinlu?"

"Yes." You choke, letting out a cough. "I am now."

"I was wondering if you'd like to explain what you injected yourself with back there. I'll have you know that the use of Refrain is a capital offence and you could be kicked out before you even-"

"It's my medication." You state firmly, straining to pull your head off the pillow to look at the man.

"Prescribed by who? And for what purpose?" The medic demands.

"Ugh, this should all be on my damn file! It was prescribed by Dr. Pailsen, as for it's purpose it's to keep me from blacking out and forgetting recent events." You state firmly, the medic's eyes widening in surprise.

"Dr. Pailsen? You mean the famous brain chemist? You have to be joking, why would he-"

"Check my bag for the rest of my medication and the paperwork. I'll give you his number if you wish to ask him yourself, he's my therapist." You stare at the medic, head still hurting and your patience gone. He leaves without a word and comes back a couple minutes later.

"I spoke with Dr. Pailsen and he cleared everything up, I apologize for assuming you were an addict."

The medic leaves and you breath a sigh of relief. After a simple check up you're given your duffle bag and allowed to leave the infirmary. It's only 2:00 PM and you've been excused from any activities due to the incident.

>Injured pilot.

Remembering the injured pilot they took away on a stretcher you look around the infirmary to see if he's still alive. It's not hard to find him, since everyone else in the infirmary is ether a medic or in a body bag.

The guy is pretty banged up, unconscious and bandaged like a god damn mummy. From the looks of it he probably won't be here for much longer, they'll need to send him to a proper medical facility if he wants to stay alive and kicking.

Looking at the clip board on the front of his bed you check his name.

>Dennzel Kruszewski

Making a note of the name, you leave the injured man to his rest and hopeful recovery before going to the mess hall. You don't bother dropping off your bag, half with the intent of sneaking some food back to your room for later.

The mess hall isn't very crowded, but the small wait in line feels like it takes years with the smell of hot food filling every square inch of the tiled room. You load down with spaghetti and meatballs, fresh fruit, and a some pudding before looking around for the other survivors.

They're not hard to find, sitting by themselves at a table, looking just about as good as you do. Walking over you think on what you should say...

Deciding just to approach and introduce yourself, you walk up to the table and find that the three survivors sitting down didn't notice your approach to the table.

"Uh, hi I'm Xinlu Kuu, do you mind if I sit down with you guys?"

None of them speak and merely prod at their food like they didn't here you at all. It's not until one of them, a gangly looking young man with short red hair and sunglasses, looks up and sees you that someone responds.

"Hey, you're that chick who stayed behind to fight those guys!"

You wince as the boy says that rather loudly, turning heads from all over the room and drawing more attention on you then you'd like. Immediately he seems to have realized his mistake and he quietly drops his head, just as the the other two trainees bolt their heads up, suddenly realizing who was speaking to them.

"Woah, you're still alive? That's great! Scott over here thought you killed yourself when you shot yourself up with that stuff. He thought it was Refrain!"

"Shut up Bill! I just assumed she needed uh, insulin shots or something, right?" 'Scott' looks up to you and you just shrug.

"Yeah, something like that. Anyway, can I sit down? My food it kind of getting cold..."

"Oh, yeah sorry about that. I'm Scott Washington," The young blond boy says, nudging the much taller and rounder brown haired man next to him. "This is Bill Steiner, don't believe a word he says!"

You sit down next to the red head who gives you an awkward, rather apologetic smile for the loudness earlier and pushes up his sunglasses.

"I'm Rick Astley, nice to meet you Xun-xin, uh-"

"You can just call me Kuu." You say, taking a bit of your food before asking "How are you guys doing?"

Silence falls over the table and you're left to eat your food for a good solid minute before Scott speaks.

"I'm just happy to be in one piece. I think we owe our lives, or at least good portions of our asses to you Kuu. Didn't really see what you did, but I heard you fucked a lot of things up. We're all fine, but are you?"

As much as you were shaken, hurt, and angered from the battle you decide there's no reason to burden the others with your problems when they already have their own to deal with. In fact, you were the one who saved their lives, if anything they're probably hoping you'll turn out to be someone dependable...

"I-I-I...I could have killed more of them if I hadn't run out of ammo!" You state, taking a bite of a rather large meatball while getting looks of surprise from everyone at the table.

"Jesus, you're serious aren't you?" Scott asks from the across the table, eyes locked on you trying to figure out if you're serious or not.

"Of course I am! I mean I don't think I could have beaten them ALL by myself b-but...If I had had more ammo maybe more of us would be here right now."

"The fact anyone besides you is prove of a miracle." Bill says with a shake of his head. "I'm amazed they didn't just gun us down after we got back, I mean how the hell are they going to hide something like this?"

"I don't know, but I'm just happy we had someone in our group crazy enough to make a different." Rick says with a grin, unzipping his uniform and reaching into his shirt, pulling out a pair of sunglasses.

"Here, I want you to have these. I told everyone I wore mine because I have sensitive eyes, but to be fair I just feel cooler when I wear them. I only have one extra pair, but I feel you deserve them more then I do."

"Huh, thanks." You say, taking the large sunglasses and tucking them away.

You sit in silence and eat your lunch, filling your belly and scraping away the leftovers into a small plastic bag you hid in your duffle. Hit with a sudden wave of drowsiness, you think on what to do...

>Go to your bunk and get some sleep. You can investigate things when you don't feel like dropping dead.

Gotta be well-rested, or we can't perform. And considering what their idea of a basic training exercise is, let's not be caught in less than optimal conditions.

As tired as you are, you wanna get to know the others a bit more before you head to bed. After all you only know their names...

"I know this is probably a bad time to ask, but why did you join the military?"

Rick is the first person to speak up. "Easy. The military pays great, especially when you get into the higher ranks. I can make more in the military then I could working any other job. Sure I'm basically risking dying every waking moment of being employed, but in just a couple years I'll have enough to pay for everything I need to start my music career! And my dad thinks I'm saving up for medical school, ha!"

"Well I joined to uphold the sanctity and stability of our nation." Scott says with a smile, crossing his arms and trying to act all humble until Bill adds "It was ether this or work in his parent's brewery"

"S-shut up! Don't listen to anything that comes out of this guy's mouth, he's a chronic liar! He'll even deny her's related to the Steiner Family!"

Bill rolls his eyes and shakes his head. "You do realize that out of all the people in Britannia two families are bound to have the same last name, right?"

"Yeah but they're nobility, you don't see the average joe running around with the last name Brittania do you?" Scott retorts.

"The Steiner's art industrialists more then they are nobles. Besides, if I was a member of the Steiner Family I doubt I'd have gotten wrapped up in his mess in the first place."

"Well...OK you have a point."

"Do you guys have any idea why that fight happened or what's being done? I mean someone's got to be taking legal action or something..." You ask but everyone around the table shakes they're head.

"I tried meeting with the commander here to tell him what happened, but the guy just told me to 'accept' it was a training accident and move on." Rick explains.

So trial by fire.

Either that, or we weren't meant to survive. Which means more shit coming our way.
>>

"Yeah. I tried asking some other soldiers about it and they're convinced it was just some fucked up training accident and that we're some traumatized dopes who are remembering everything wrong!" Scott picks up the fork from his lunch tray and bends it in half in frustration.

Bill just shrugs his shoulders and begins scratching his messy mud colored hair. "This all feels like some kind of cover up, but it doesn't make any damn sense. What's the point of slaughtering a bunch of trainees? I tried looking into see who those Red Shoulder guys were but they all pulled out just an hour or so after the 'simulation ended. Drill Sargent Delson said they were leaving to be questioned, but considering they were taking their Knightmares I have a feeling that's a load of bull."

You let out a sigh and run your fingers through your hair.

"Well Delson is still on base, right?" You ask.

"Yeah, why do you ask? Planning on something crazy?"

You shrug your shoulders. "Not now I'm not. I'm gonna go to my bunk and sleep on this one..."

With a full belly and your exhaustion now becoming overwhelmingly apparent, the simple walk to the bunks feels like a long and arduous one. Upon entering the room you make a beeline for the nearest bed, drop your bag, and collapse onto the padded military mattress

You’re ready to collapse on your bed and drift off into dream land when there’s a sharp vibration near your butt. Letting out a rather embarrassing “Eep!” you reach around and find that it’s just your cellphone ringing.

It's Dr. Pailsen...

The bigger question is who were in the other Glassglows, including the red shoulders. Cause they died just as well as our unit did. More recruits? Japanese convicts?

“Shirley, it’s me. Is everything alright? I got a call from a medic at the Mt. Odake Base asking about your medication.”

Hearing your real name feels almost therapeutic coming from the mouth your father's closest friend and your technical legal guardian.

“Yes,I'm fine, everything is fine...well no it's not. But I'm not dead and I don't remember everything very clearly."

“Alright, it’s obvious from the sound of your voice you’re not in any kind of condition to tell me what happened. Just tell me this, did you have an episode? Did you have to use the drugs?” Pailsen asks, his voice filled with both worry and curiosity.

“Yeah I did. It hurt worse then you told me it would and I was basically paralyzed for a half and hour..."

“The pain and paralysis are just side effects, unfortunate but necessary side effects. It's obvious the drugs are working and that's good, they should stave off any memory loss provided you administer it during an episode and not afterwards or prior. I can’t say how long the drugs will remain effective though, it could be two more episodes or a hundred before they stop working. When they do your memory is going to deteriorate rapidly."

"I know, I know..." You say, laying your head down onto your pillow, knowing full well what could happen to you.

"If you were anyone but Joseph's daughter I'd have you locked up and treated for whatever in god's unholy name is affecting your mind. However you're dead set on getting to the bottom of your father's death and I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't interested in finding out myself."

"The moment the drugs stop working I'll call you, until then there's no need to worry..."

And with that you hang up, tuck away your phone, and fall into a empty, dreamless sleep...

Convicts more likely. I guess that if those were fresh recruits, they wouldn't be as ready to shoot as these guys were.
