You offer the harpy a consoling pat, and tuck the necklace into a bag.
"We will take it to my father, yes? There has been a bit too much magic already."
Jin watches your bag intently, but she nods.
"Yes. Okay."

Smiling softly at her, your turn back and address your amateur looting enthusiasts, your sudden clap resounding in the hidden room.
"It is a straight shot from here, yes. I am tired of wizards already."

They file after you, piled high with, well, everything from the hidden room.

It's a short trip back through the passage, the illusory wall. You're bacl in the simple room again in no time flat.

The next door stands before you, striped with iron, menacing you with promises of-

Nope, still not locked.

You push your way past without any real attention, following the trailing runes around another bend. A pair mildly impressive double doors marks the next room- You can feel the buzz of smaller magical signatures in the space beyond.

You offer a sharp nod to your comrades, and throw the doors open.

The room stretches before you- A gated entranceway on the right, a high, curving ceiling, pillars embedded into each wall. And between each, a tapestry, intricately sewn with the details of whatever inane story this moron wanted to show off today. There's a suit of armour at the foot of each pillar, each lit with the feeling of magic.

There's no subtlety here is there? You let out another breath, a disappointed sigh slipping free.

>Just... Just smash the armours. You can't even be bothered.
>Try the next door. Pretend to be surprised when the come to life and attack.
>No more. You're done. Try and tear away all the mana at once, and smash the gate.

So REQM, you never answered what happens to the Extra EXP when we evolve, does it disappear? Carry over? Go into some secret sub-systems to fuel aspects of our next evolution like being much stronger than a normal ~whateverthefuckitis~?

You shake your head. Nope. No. Not doing it.

Walking the length of the room, you run your hand over each chestpiece, stripping the mana from the enchantments, saving it, hoarding it. Your friends watch from near the entrance as you stalk your way through the room.

The armour doesn't do so well sans magic. The surfaces rust, crumble and generally make a mess. Maybe they were enchanted against age, or wear? It's something to think about.

You continue your lap of the chamber, finishing of the supposed guardians. You... didn't manage to get all that much mana, actually. And it's a big gate.

You just have to play smart, then. Less smash, more subtle. Magical Giant spider subtle.

Reaching up, you call for the earth- coaxing each brick lining the gate to be a bit bigger, neatly snipping the bars free. From there, it's just regular giant spider subtle.

Which is, to say, you tear the gate free from the ground, and throw it out of your way.

The hallway ahead is luxuriously carpeted, a broad set of stair leading to a throne. That better be his goddamn skeleton sitting in it, or by every god this world has you'll make it be.

The walls left and right are sealed, or illusions, or whatever stupid way the wizard decided to conceal them, and you can feel the presences withing rousing. You're about to have a fight on your hands.

>Rush through to the throne room. High ground!
>Ready up with Sara, see if you can't knock one out before the fight starts.

There are so many things Lyra should be happy about at the end of it, Experience, loot, being there with friends and family. Evolving will also improve her mood.
>>
>>35611527
Given how excited Sara was about finding the laboratory she might also decide to cheer Lyra up this night, so there's that to look forward to.
>>
>>35611615

Sara's idea of cheer involves her throwing starbolts and fireballs in our face until we pass out

So, while we've got access to dad, and thus, fire magic and enchanting:
Airship.

And mages do turn apparently into hybrids with other animals in this setting, and our form of magic is pretty much parasitic in nature.

It makes me sad there aren't meat plants, so there's no reason for us to garden. Gardening's a nice hobby. Much cleaner than raising animals.
>>
You hold up a hand, and point to each wall.
"More guardians, yes."
The effect is gratifyingly instant.

Aria drops into a stance, Sheszka bristles, and even Sara has stars in the air in a moment.
You send Aria and Sheszka left, and pull Sara with you right.

You brace yourselves against the wall, as best you can, given that you're both spiders.
"You have time, yes. Make the spell as big as you can."
She nods, squeezing her eyes shut, the orbs drawing together, burning brighter above you.

The whole hall lights with blue starlight- You can feel the sizzling heat, pressing against you.

A giant suit of armour, carrying a massive club in one hand, and a greatshield in the other. It steps through the wall as if it weren't there, boots clanging emptily against the floor. It turns to face you, weapons ready, a hollow roar echoing from its helm-

And Sara's star- No, her miniature sun sweeps in, and wholly consumes it. Metal rolls gently over the stone, the heat of her spell leaving nothing but a molten pile of steel and gently smoking boots.

You cackle, leaving your wall and heading straight for the seconds guardian- A behemoth wielding a spear with a cross guard. You move to engage, Aria and Sheszka closing in- Jin takes flight from your back, the roof high enough to allow her a bit of leeway.

"Trip it!"
Your party launches into action- Sheszka blurs, reappearing to claw at the armours ankles, claws tearing into the metal beneath her newfound strength.

Aria joins you in a charge, and you slam, side by side, into its legs. It tries to brace itself, but against the strength of two evolved Arachne, that's not much of an effort.

You wrench its legs out from beneath it, toppling the armour over- and the fight quickly turns one way.

Your glaive finds purchase in the wrist, hammering between the armour plates and pinning it to the ground. With your weapon occupied, you help yourself to his, hoisting the spear overhead and wielding it like a hammer. Two blows sees the helmet dented in, metal giving beneath your strength.

Aria decides to ensure the armour stays on the ground, dropping her glaive and taking hold of a leg- She braces herself with all six legs. With a squeal of metal, tears it free, casting the torn leg away and reclaiming her weapon.

Jin lands, using your glaive as a perch, and sets about raining starlight across any patch of the things body not currently occupied by someone else.

You think the whole thing somewhat unfair, but the less injuries, the better. Your gang beating concludes with a final sounding clang, the chestplate giving way beneath Sheszka's fists, and the magic holding the thing together snuffs out.

That felt pretty good, actually.

All that's left is the throne, now.

It's over. This is the last room, thank the gods.

Everyone steps through the final gateway together, into the brightly lit throne room. More tapestries, more pillars line the walls, and the runes gather above, a giant swirling light illuminating the room.

The carpet trails across the floor, slinking up the steps to where an ornately carved chair awaits. And in it...

Your wizardly nemesis, long dead and skeletal. A journal still open next to him on a little table, quill frozen in ink so long dried that it's pretty much a fossil.

You follow the path, standing before the corpse. You extend one armoured finger, prodding at his skull, which promptly snaps free of the vertebrae, rolling into his lap.

Good.
The journal is an account of him complaining, insinuating that the war between the empire and the forest is the reason no-one has come to his lair. He actually calls it a lair.

There's also several paragraphs of bragging about how he built the thing beneath the noses of the forest, and how his deviousness is second on to his infinite wisdom.

Which is, of course, why he is a skeleton, alone in his dungeon however many centuries later.
>>
>>35614682
You turn to your party, arrayed a step below you, all waiting expectantly.
Is this- Are you supposed to make a speech? Or something?

You cough into one hand, and then straighten, framing yourself with your new spear and glaive.

"We did it, yes? Even if it was a stupid dungeon. There were traps, and monsters, and magic- And we did it. We won. Together."

You stow your weapons behind you, and bring your hands together. A clatter of chitin, echoing alone in the wide room as you applaud.
"Well done!"

Even Aria blushes, covering her face and turning. Sheszka and Jin stand next to each other, glowing. Sara is rooting through her bag for a book, but she blushes when you look at her.

"Let's go. I want to see the sky again. And less runes, yes."
A chorus of agreement answers you, and one by one, they turn, leaving behind a fool and his throne.
>>
>>35614682

This dungeon is a vault to store his ego. It is a miracle it does not go down another 40 levels.

It is thus a good thing he is not a lich, otherwise he might of pushed it down further to fit his ever expanding ego. It must of gotten righter tight in here towards the end.
>>
>>35614682
huh, poor guy.
What were his last journal words?
>>
>>35614731
The guy spent his entire life writing shitty fanfiction about himself and died alone in a tomb he built. He barely qualifies as a wizard for his traps and golems, there's no way he could have ever become a lich.
>>
>>35614717
They all get head rubs. Even Aria.

>That's it for tonight!
>Next thread will be loot identification, dungeon chatter and of course, going to sleep!
>Next thread will probably be thursday!
>Questions, comments, concerns answered while I'm in thread!

To start it off-
Honestly, I don't think the classic D&D style dungeon works with the quest format.
Thread 2 of it was a grind.
If we do dungeons again, it'll play more like the moth rescue- Rolls for finding your way, a few events, that sort of thing.
Room by room was killing me!
>>
>>35614816
WHAT EVOLUTION DID WE BECOME
>>
>>35614816
It IS sort of impractical to clear a whole thing.

>>
>>35614816
I liked moth rescue better, yes. It seemed like our map crit made this a monty haul.
>>
>>35614816
The moth rescue one worked out really well, ja.

>>35614844
Just wait already.
>>
>>35614816
I imagine the spike trap, golems, pressure trap, fake treasure, knights and guardians would have been much more entertaining is we hadn't known they were there and couldn't just rip the magic out of them.
>>
>>35614816

This is the type of dungeon you do in person over a 4 hour game session really. QM format does not work too well i guess.
>>
>>35614816
That's a shame, REQM, I really enjoyed this kind of dungeon crawling, knowing the layout really helped visualize what we doing. Thanks for running man I had fun.
>>
>>35614816
So, can we turn this into a magical laboratory for elfdad and spidersister? If not, could we set up a mana generator in our nest?
>>
>>35614816
Just checked up on Shesz' pastebin and noticed something new.

>Transformation: Wolf- A very large wolf.

Can she go full werewolf under a full moon now?
>>
>>35614881
>Spike trap
Identified by map and used on golems

>Golems
Identified by map and ganked by spike trap/fought for the hell of it.

>Pressure trap
Identified by map and disabled by magic

>Fake treasure
Disabled by magic

>Knights.
Disabled by magic

>Guardians
Ambushed due to map, ganked/fought for the hell of it.

>Skeleton Boss
POKE OF DEATH!

Yeah...I see what you mean.

It's not bad per say- but it really is more tabletop oriented- The back and forth between a player and gm as you trundle through a dungeon, with rapidfire... whatever happening, it's not the same in a quest.

Maps will probably see use again, and I've no doubt people will be throwing themselves into every potentially treasure filled hole they see. But the lack of progress is really rough on me, writing wise. It's hard to keep things interesting, and with a reread, I found the second thread kind of dry.

We'll see where we go from here.

>>35614918
I don't see how you'd stop them.

>>35614970
She doesn't need a moon!

>>35614984
Future maps will be more vague, I think. Maybe limiting it to a bonus when something starts to trigger, or something.

>>35615032
>>35615062
Larger is relative. You're still a giant spider.
You can ask her about changing, once she figures out how to.
>>
>>35614984
The reason we used magic to steamroll the traps was because we knew exactly where each and every one of them were thanks to our spider sonar. Earth magic is the most useful magic for a giant spider adventurer.

I get the impression the pacing was the way it was because Lyra was deliberately doing things very methodically. It was our first real dungeon and we had a big party to look after and banter with. I just hope REQM keeps giving us dungeon maps for high rolls with our tremor-radar. I really like knowing what we're doing.

lyra darling, you need to stop being such a downer.

>>35615626

But the lack of progress is really rough on me, writing wise. It's hard to keep things interesting, and with a reread, I found the second thread kind of dry.

You could just speed through those parts. Dedicating a few sentences to them and not even having a vote. Have an initial goal going in, either of getting something done and leaving in fastest route, or systematically looting everything. If the latter, gloss over it, with some rolls for "search/spot" and the like. And focus on the actual interactive stuff, like monsters and traps that aren't trivial (that is. trivial monsters and traps can also be just done on autopilot and combined into a post)

That being said, I personally found amusement in defacing the murals and our girls breaking down the false wall adorably, and the part where jin really wanted the amulet. Those were cute.

>>35615663
I'm almost certain she was trolling Lyra.

>>

>>35615573

The bits of character interaction were definitely the highlights of the writing.
There's no worry about dungeons disappearing from the quest, I just have to find a balance between crunch and progress.

yes, that scene would be hilarious.

Also, I am totally for the queen route (although I want it to be really late game. After we are world renown hero)

I'd love to see more of Nin, but I'm really unsure how. That said, I expect there's SOME way for them to get evolved, since they were one of the three starting races for the quest...

what political players?

Doesn't have to be in combat... could hold the fort during our adventures... always ready to administer heals and the like after a long day of hunting and/or adventuring...
Possibly the Royal Administrator, overseeing things when we enevitably disappear on adventures, possibly hiring adventuring groups to drag us back to do royal things...
