You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After getting up nice and early in the morning, you decided to go and talk to Karel about... stuff. You didn't see her wandering anywhere around the castle like she udually does before going to see Emilio, so you checked if she was still in her room.

...and she was in the middle of getting dressed. While you're used to seeing such things, Karel's utter lack of concern for modesty whenever you're the only one around is still rather offputting.

>Congratulations, Reinhold is now a fearsome DIRE WOLF!
>Much larger than their the other types of wolf, the Dire Wolf's size also means that they are also that much more dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her dear friend!
>But while dire wolves are massive, they still don't -quite- stand on the same level as people.

>"So what brings you here at the buttcrack of dawn?" Karel asks. "And it's okay to look now, I'm fully dressed now."

With a sigh of relief, you turn to face your friend who is thankfully now wearing more than just her underwear. For a second, you wonder how Luciana would react if she found out tat you were hanging out with another girl while she gets changed in front of you... and then you flash back to that horrible incident with her failed spell the other day and a feeling of sheer terror washes over you.

...but it's not like you're doing anything wrong here, so it's all good! And Luciana doesn't even know that Karel's a girl to begin with!

"I just thought I'd stop by and see how my favorite bodyguard is doing," you say to Karel.
"Suuuure I am," Karel simply rolls her eyes, completely unimpressed by your flattery. "Nighttime's the only time when you usually come barging in with nothing better to do, so I know you've gotta have SOMETHING that you wanted to bug me about."

Even first thing in the morning, she's as sharp as ever.

"Eh, I guess I ought to just say it," you sigh.
"Yeah, you should," Karel replies. "It's too early in the morning for you to be playing around."
"Alright then," you take a deep breath and steel your resolve. "What exactly are your plans for the future, Karel?" you ask. "You -know- you'll be discovered as a girl at some point, right?"

In an instant, Karel shifts from being utterly relaxed to ready to fight.

"...you better not have told anyone," Karel snarls, pointing at you while the bracelet on her wrist manifests some painful-looking spikes. "Because if you did, I swear to God..."
"H- hey!" you throw up your hands. "I didn't tell anyone, I swear!"
"Then why the hell are you bringing this up now!?" she shouts.
"It's just been bugging me for a while now, that's all," you reply.
"I've managed to live my entire life without being caught so far, I think I'll be fine as long as I stay careful."
"Yeah, but -I- found out," you reply. "And so did Gerhard and Niklaus."
"Y- yeah, but those two aren't normal..." she mumbles.

We won't get through to her. We will only make her angry and perhaps even push her to actively defy us because she is stubborn.
We should instead bring it up later, multiple times over time either subtly or when it feels appropriate to get her to agree with our points.

>keep pushing it
We walk in abnormal circles.
Whenever or however it happens, as long as you don't kill someone who doesn't deserve it in a panicked attempt to keep cover, I have your back.
Because you are a sibling to me, and that bond is as real as any I have, because the only family I've known are the ones I've chosen or have chosen me.
>>
>>35660899
>keep pushing it

>"Y- yeah, but those two aren't normal..." she mumbles.
And Celestino's normal? And Gregory's normal? And Thierri's normal? And so on and so forth.

Look, we're around a whole lot of not-normal people, and if that's your criteria for who's going to find out, the list is pretty huge. We're not saying she needs to have a huge meeting about it, but a controlled release of information is going to be way easier on everyone involved than the alternative.

And besides, wouldn't it be great to be able to just open the door first thing in the morning if someone knocks without having to jump through all sorts of hoops?
>>
>>35660990
Ariane is beyond such petty concepts as gender.
She would rule this pathetic plain as a God if she cared for anything more than getting her brioche just glossy enough or embarrassing Nico.
>>

"You spend a lot of time around non-normal people. Arnaud, Gregory, Ariane, Thierri. I wouldn't be too surprised if at least one of them already knows. How do you want Celestino to eventually learn. Just think about it, okay?

>>
>>35661240
Reinhold was there for Gregory's "oh, you mean ADRIEN", he's taken note of Karel's shocking similarity to Marianne, he know her affinity is water. He also knows what Adrien looks like, which is presumably very similar to Aquaman. He might not know it as a fact, but he can speculate.

This

I would instead make the argument that Ariane (I think that's Greg's wife's name, I forgot) is a talented female adventurer. One of the best in the nation, even. And SHE would understand COMPLETELY the struggle that Karel is going through

Therefore. The person she needs to talk about it with isn't a bunch of skeevy old men, but instead the battle-hardened Valkyrie who could put Celestino to shame if she wanted to.
>>
>>35661281
It's still a big gamble.
>>
>>35661288
This is a pretty reasonable first step to suggest, yeah.
>>
>>35661288
That's actually a pretty solid plan honestly.
>>
>>35661312
We could go up to Gregory and ask him to tell us about how Adrien is Raoul. He probably wouldn't lie to us about it, and if he did his reaction might be a tell, considering his reaction to us mentioning Adrien earlier on.
>>
>>35661288
>skeevy old men
Hey now. I get your point but there ain't nothing skeevy about the dudes we're talking about, Cel aside.
Ideally, we'd be talking to Gran-Gran Eschenwald about this because she can both influence the old man, is a girl swordie herself and has a link to the Adrien situation through Volker but, alas, closed borders and all that.
>>

>>
>>35661346
We might be able to ask Marianne, its her uncle after all. And Thierri almost certainly told her plenty of their adventure stories.

I wouldn't be surprised if she knew Raoul went by Adrien.
>>
The solution is so simple you don't even see it.
We need to kill Celestino.

No, it's easier to kill Karel and have Marianne impersonate her so no one has suspicions.

>>
>>35661781

>>
>>35661781
>>35661798
If he can make clones we need him to make a bunch of clones of Reinhold for all the girls, that way we can get all the routes done in one go.

>>35661781
Also ask him to fuse Luciana and Emilio together.
>>
>>35661822
Genius, let's get to naming them.
>>
>>35661751
What if we switch have Marianne switch with Karel while Karel is asleep. Marianne can learn some fighting stuff and get to know Emilio better, and Karel can embrace the side of her that is royalty. We can strongarm her into playing along as long as we can convince Marianne to take her place.
We just have to be persuasive.

That still isn't a whole lot like pretending to be a boy when you're a girl because your Mom projected all her dashed hopes and dreams onto you.
At the most, Ariane could sympathize with the aspects of being somewhat forced down the same route as your parent because she didn't have much choice about being an adventurer being born on the road with Nicolas and Karel didn't have a choice with Alicia, but that isn't even the issue here because both Karel and Ariane both (luckily) enjoy swording/adventuring.

Getting your secrets exposed even by accident sucks, just think about it.
>>
>>35662744
>maybe you need some time to think about it?
Just give her something to consider for now. Early morning isn't the best time to make life-altering choices.

As an older brother we can only suggest and nudge, but she has to make the choice on her own.
>>
>>35662712
I dunno. Agnes ideally?
Ariane's not a bad shout because of her instinctive caring personality but I'd wager Greg should probably be there as well, given his what he knows about Adrien and that he's more likely to get things done than his wife.
Ariane can be there as the support for Karel and not make her feel quite so upset about the whole thing because I doubt Greg would have too much tact for the initial outing, though he might ultimately be of more use further down the line.

I hope you people that are voting "Take some time and think about it!" realize that we've given her "time" each and every time we've brought it up with her and she NEVER does anything about it.

Constantly putting it off

Again and again

And you guys are to blame for it because she's never going to do it without us pushing her into it. Ever.

How many times do we have to "give her time" until you realize that she's not going to do it on her own? Ten times? Twenty times? It's been at least five times now that we've gone "No no take your time!" and she puts it off.

How many times have we actually told her to take action over it. We've discussed the situation but this is the first time we've really brought a plan to her, as far as I remember.
>>
Ariane seems like the most random choice, I mean she'd probably be pretty understanding but she doesn't have much to do with Karel in the first place
>>
>>35662947
This. Karel is just going to dither around and if/when she gets called back it's going to be too late. Her largest potential support network is in Granache, given generally more understanding nature and also that she is likely king's niece. Honestly I would be all for telling Gregory the whole story regardless of what she thinks. He is likely to screw it up a lot less than Reinhold and Karel.

>>
>>35663020
Exactly why she is a good choice, with someone she doesn't know it might be easier for her to talk things out.
>>
>>35663020
She has nothing to do with Karel herself, but has the closest connection with a few key people:

Gregory
Emilio
Celestino

See, we can't outright tell her to go visit Gregory because Densehold can't make the connection between Adrien and Raoul. So there's no reason to visit him because really, why would you go to that guy of all people with your gender identity issues in the first place.

At the same time, he's the only one who seems to have the closest link with Adrien and Volkier that we know of without knowing that Adrien is the King's brother (if it's true, could be a curveball).

Yes, this may be metagaming, but Ariane was also the one who wanted us to bring her *any* of our problems. And this seems like the biggest problem of them all, so who else do we turn to?
>>
>>35663020
It's not like she's really closer to anyone else here who has enough clout with Celestino. Other than Ariane I can think of Gregory, Thierri, and Arnaud as the most likely choices.

She's not particularly close to any of them. And it'd probably be alright no matter which one she told.
>>

He didn't know about us and and Volker, Arnaud's just an old hack who everybody only believes is a master of secrets because they've been told he is since they were wee tots. He just writes down jibberish and attaches the notes to stray pigeons in order to keep up the impression of conspiracy but he really doesn't know what he's doing.

"At least think about it, okay?" you call out.

The only answer you get is a dull thud from something hitting the door.

Realizing that you've probably pressed your luck with Karel more than enough for now, you temporarily retire from the battle to help her with her issues and head downstairs to the dining hall so you can wait for Marianne.

Upon making it to the entrance to the dining hall, tou take your usual position beside the door and wait...

...and wait...

...and wait.

Just as you're about to go up to her room yourself and see if she's alright, you hear the familiar footsteps and chatter of the Princess's usual entourage of maids as they approach the dining hall.

"Oh..." Marianne says before coughing into a handkerchief. "Sorry for being later than usual, but I seem to be coming down with something."

While Marianne looks more or less healthy as far as you can tell by looking, she is coughing quite a bit and her expression betrays how miserable she feels.

Wurmscale's a rather horrific illness where the affected's skin starts to peel off like the scales of a shedding Lindwurm, hence the name. "In that case, umm..." you look around. "...want to hear about something funny that happened the last time I had dinner at Sir Gregory's house?" you ask.
"Suit yourself," Marianne replies. "I'm just going to rest my head on the table while you talk."

She seems to be sicker than she lets on.

"So, umm..." you trail off.
"I'm listening," Marianne replies.
"Oh, okay," you laugh nervously. "so the last time I was over there, we were all hanging out in the living room while Luciana finished cooking. Elena and Reya were playing with the rabbit while Rana was teasing Bernard about something... I didn't really hear about what, but Sir Gregory started to join in after a while."

Man, Reinhold was a messed up kid.
>>
>>35664687
He has yet to lose his friends in an eclipse, though.
>>
>>35664669
Oh boy, Rein's setting up a real doozy here.
>>
>>35664693
And now I just pictured this scene played out with Reinhold, Monique and Luciana.
Not just the clip, the full thing.

>Rana was teasing Bernard about something
He's only like 11 or something, of course it's not fully developed yet!

"So just as it looked like Bernard was about to run off, Ariane burst into the room holding a huge tray of cinnamon buns," you say.
"She does tend to have good timing when it comes to that..." Marianne remarks.
"She only made enough for each of us to get one," you continue, "and Sir Gregory started grumbling about that since I guess he really likes cinnamon buns..."

That was kind of surprising to see, actually.

"But Ariane said that we'd all have to make do with what she made since she didn't want us all to fill up on pastries before Luciana finished cooking," you say.

Reminder that it's been ten months and we still haven't gotten around to the Citrine-had-a-hard-life flashback side-story.

"I was the first one she handed one to," you say, and I ended up finishing mine before anyone else even got theirs," you laugh. "Bernard was the last one to get his cinnamon bun, and RIGHT before he was about to bite down into it, Elena's rabbit came out of nowhere and snatched it out of his hands before he could."

You see Marianne's back trembling with laughter... which then becomes another round of coughing.

Once Marianne stops coughing, you continue your story.

"Bernard ended up chasing that rabbit all over the mansion while Elena ran after them yelling at him to not hurt her," you say, "and she ended up making a full loop around the place before stopping at Sir Gregory's feet and looking up at him with the cinnamon bun still in her mouth."
"...was it trying to give him the cinnamon bun?" Marianne asks.
"That's what Ariane said... and then she started laughing until she saw Bernard about to cry and went back into the kitchen to make some more cinnamon buns to make up for the one that Bernard didn't get to eat."

dawwwwwwwww

Being Bernard is truly suffering.
>>
It might be fun to know more about her.

Thread opening will start out as if it were Rein's flashback only to have it be Citrine all along.

Won't it be interesting to know how badly rein was used to the point that his very speach pattern and thinking process is affected by Citrine on a subconscious basis.

Sir Greg: Massacres whole armies, is adored by small children and fuzzy animals

And that's it for tonight's thread. Hooray for pissing off your friends and telling stories about rabbit bullies.

The next thread will be Tuesday night.

And now I take questions if you had any.

Thanks for the thread OP!

Karel needs someone to push her about these things. She might be mad about it now, but in the end she'll be better off.
At least I hope so

Thanks for running Arch.
Just wanna say that I really appreciate these threads. It might just be some little story tucked away in a dark corner of the internet, but PGQ has become a tale as dear to me as any book, movie, game, tv show, whatever.

I know what you mean it's kinda weird how much I like it but in a good way.

Cheers.

The in-universe day will feel long waiting for Karel's decision.

What's our cover story for showing up at Greg and Ariane's with Karel in tow and then talking to them in private, should Nico or Luci catch wind of us showing up at the house they goddamn live in?
>>
>>35665001
The plan looks to be bringing Emilio to visit (which naturally brings Karel along), since Luciana and Elena are staying with them.

Getting the chance for them to talk privately shouldn't be too hard if everyone has other people with whom to stay occupied.
>>
>>35665001
1. Let Ariane know that Karel have to talk to her.
2. Wait for her to conveniently ask for our help at helping her do some chores.

Or we could choose Gregory and just have him order us to join him upstairs for some boring discussion about security stuff.
>>

>The plan looks to be bringing Emilio to visit
That works

>boring discussion about security stuff
Isn't that technically Nico's job though?
