So, power outages aside, let's finish this thing up, right? hahaha.

++

[] No luck- rationing is pretty bad, ya know?

You shake your head, watching the faces fall around your plane- a few of the guys turn back dejectedly.

“You two stay here.” You tell merlin and Wendy over the intercom, popping the canopy seal and standing up. “I'll be done in a minute.”

The chief looks up at you as you crawl out of the cockpit to take a seat on the fuselage between the it and where it begins to blend into the wing.

“Any luck, sir?” he asks, hopefully.

You shake your head again. “No dice, wartime rationing is pretty bad, ya know?” You say, waiting for it to hit him.

Just as he starts to turn around, you grin. “Chief, I'm fuckin with ya. Get some guys to come give us a hand, will ya? And fire up the grill, they loaded us down!”

The chief practically jumps- he's older than you, you're worried he's gonna put his back out doing that. “Hell yeah sir!” He's got an aircraft tug hooked to the bird in no time, pulling it from the tarmac outside to the hangar, where the ground crew waits. A line of 55 gallon drums, cut in half down their sides, then filled with coals lines the back wall, legs and steel mesh tack welded in place.

>>
“So how did it go, sir?” He asks, as crew help unload Wendy and Merlin from their crowded seats, then set up a chain to some coolers, strategically placed near the grills.

You shrug. “Pretty good, actually, got there at just the right time- would ya believe the old boy that ran the place was Texan?”

The chief shrugs, eyeballing a pair of wrapped T-bones- the shape gives them away. “I've seen stranger, sir.” He says. “How much was it? No way you got all this for what we gave you.”

You shrug. “He cut me a deal.” You say, handing back the bit of remaining MPC. The chief tosses it idily in one hand, then puts it back in your chest pocket.

“Keep it, sir. Our way of saying thanks.”

“Shit, chief.” You say, shaking your head, “You guys keep my fighter in good shape. I consider that plenty.”

He shakes his head. “Sir, that's our job, and we take pride in it. This,” He says, indicating the guys lighting the grill and then the money in your pocket, “Is something else. We’re a team, ya know? I know you guys have bounced around, had a lot of different crews, but we're all in this together, even if we don't all go out and pull the trigger. Maybe they didn't act like it, but I've never run a crew that didn't know it's pilots, ya know?”

You nod. “I hear ya, chief. But the way you say that, makes it sound like the pilots belong to the crew, not the other way around!”

“Cos that's how it is, sir.” He says with a chuckle. “Even if you don't always remember it. Why don't you guys go get cleaned up and changed? We'll sort this out here, and you guys don't have to run around in flight gear.”

Question, how badly beat up was Germany during the martian war in SWQ canon?

I remember something about it being occupied part way through (hence why Young was based in Britain), but did the invasion basically displace the German and Italian governments, just like the French were displaced by the Nazis?

Or did some parts of central Europe stay firmly in human hands for the entirety of the war, like in the US?
>>
>>35682442
The smell summons Konstantina and Natalya from Siberia, if they aren't on site already, in which case they have already fallen to the Full Fronkal.
>>
>>35682524
The German government was definitely screwed, since the Fuhrer and friends became martian chow, though nothing much was said about the situation in Italy.
>>
>>35682524
Pretty much all of mainland Europe was either occupied by the Martians or mauled pretty bad. Most nations have only just started to recover thanks to rigorous rebuilding programs. Think Marshall Plan on steroids.
>>
>>35682554
And was Germany occupied?

Minna's first boyfriend dying at dunkerque or something was supposed to still be cannon, but that's pretty weak indirect evidence, and I can't think of anything else up the top of my head for certain.

Minna's first boyfriend died at Dunkirk, buying women and children time to flee the advancing Martians, manning his post to the last breath.

From what I remember, Planefag said that most areas occupied by the Martians had everything in it useful, like steel and stone and wood for fires, used to get the martian industry on Earth going, to make their not shitty tanks.

The martians landed just about everywhere in the opening invasion, mostly attacking major cities. Other than that we don't have the full picture on the major fronts. France is a major stronghold threatening Spain, Italy, Germany and Britain of course. There is also fighting with Patton and Rommel in Africa and the commandos up the Mediterranean. Malta would be just as important as it was IRL, only against different enemies. The Russians are cut off from the rest of Europe and there is shit going down in Asia too. The aliens were even making inroads into Canada at one point, though I'm not sure how canon that was.

Parsing history over to SWQ canon makes for some strange bedfellows. The Pacific war would be Jap+Murrican marines pushing the martians out of southeast Asia and Australia. (lol mark 14 torpedoes). The battle of the Atlantic would be RN+RCN escorting convoys to Britain. Only instead of being an anti u-boat operation the u-boats are friendly and the enemy is martian subs and dreadnoughts.

I think there was also some mention of the French front devolving back into gritty trench warfare. Complete with gas-masked horses and everything.

[x] Flight gear's as good as anything, chief. Can we help out?

You shrug, looking at Wendy and Merlin, both of whom look kind of blankly at you. You turn back to the chief. “Flight gear's as good as anything for us, chief. Can we help out?”

He nods. “Yeah, if you're sure. We don't really have any tables, but some of the guys are gonna set something up over there, can ya help 'em out?” He motions to where some of the crew are standing with some lumber, moving a pair of aircraft tugs around.

“What about us?” Wendy asks, indicating herself and Merlin by putting a hand on the younger witch's shoulder.

The chief shrugs. “You two mind helping with potatoes? We're gonna slice a bunch up and grill 'em.”

Wendy nods. “I'm an old hand with those. Come, Merlin, I'll show you a few tricks.”

You're able to set up and actually sit- you end up helping with the potatoes yourself for a while before the aircraft show back up on the horizon. They begin landing shortly- most with expended weapons, only a few with ordinance still hanging from their wings. A few show evidence of hits- though you don't count any missing, and none of the damage looks too bad. Still, there's none of the celebration of the other mission as the Polish and Germans taxi to their respective tarmacs and hangars and begin shutting down.

Meanwhile, the witches begin landing, and you see Mav sniffing the air as she hovers in, and all the witch's eyes are drawn towards the grills- you have to be honest, the sound and smell is starting to make you pretty hungry too. You grin when Ice, predictably, shoots a look at you.

She makes tracks straight for you as soon as she dismounts, an unreadable expression on her face. The chief, nearby, stands up and salutes. “Ma'am.” He says, respectfully.

Good point.

She pauses to look over at him. “Chief, what's going on here?” She asks, her voice carefully neutral.

He smiles. “Well, ma'am, I didn't figure it was right for us to not really ever get to know each other. I don't know how your old crews did it, but this is how we've always done things in ASG six.”

“How- how did you get all this?” She asks. “This has to be every pound of beef in AOR north!”

“Well, me and the boys put up a collection, ma'am, and commander Bishop did the leg work.” He shrugs. “We buy, he flies, that kind of thing.”

Ice shakes her head. “Ok, chief, but that's not how we do things with VF three.” She says. “How much did it end up costing you?”

He shrugs. “Ah, well, ma'am, I can't tell you for sure. Everyone pitched in a bit.”

“Alright, you find out how much, and we'll reimburse them out of squadron funds, ok?” She orders. “I'm not going to make you spend out of pocket like that for a good idea like this.”

She looks over at the grill, and the witches hovering around it- the Sharktwins, predictably perhaps, giving 'helpful tips' to the rating on one of the grills. “The food about ready? We're starved!”

The chief laughs. “How about you girls sit down, ma'am, and I'll make my guys with extra duty start carting the food over.”

She nods and the chief walks off. Ice looks back at you. “Did the surgeon clear you to fly?”

I disagree with your interpretation. Both Frank and Young are far more complex characters than you give them credit for. It is true that Young puts up a show of being a stereotypical egocentric pilot, but that is shown to just a facade. It is his way of coping with the stress of war. Furthermore, Frank is not simply a noble hero dedicated to defending his squad. He is shown to be a flawed individual with a self-destructive streak.

I suppose. The problem with either of them, imho, is that they both seem to forestall a self-assessment of themselves. Young tends to show his brash and loud side more often, while Fronk's self-destructive tendencies seem to have gotten the better of him as a person.

“I flew the hack, so no.” You say, shaking your head. “Why?”

Ice chews her lip, looking at you. “How do you feel?”

You shrug. “As good as I usually do. Hungry, why?”

she chews her lip some more, then nods. “You're back on flight duty, then.”

You quirk an eyebrow, then stand up, walking around her, carefully looking her up and down.

“Frank, what- “

“Ya know, you sure don't look like the flight surgeon.” You say. “Can you clear me like that?”

“Witch.” She says. “If I say you're good enough, you're good enough.”

“Was it bad up there?” You ask, suddenly worried it was hairy and they got lucky.

She shrugs. “We could have used you.” she says. “But it's not that, we did ok. Everyone came home. It's that the soviets night bombers are back at it, and higher higher wants you to take another shot at them.”

“They what.” You ask, flatly. “They are aware last time was a setup, right? And god only knows how long they'd been flying setups like that, waiting for me to show up.”

Ice nods. “I'm aware, Frank. Look, do you think I would be doing this if I didn't think it was important?” She asks.

“No.” You admit as she takes a seat next to you. “I don't think you'd let me fly if you thought it wasn't necessary.” You grin kind of weakly at that.

She shrugs. “I can't stop you, not really. It's... complex.” She says. “not tonight, but you're up tomorrow night. You'll have more support.”

I admit I like Wendy, but I'm worried that the Ruskies will try and plan to take her into account the next time they jump us.

Last successful bayonet charge was performed by a Scottish unit in Iraq, during 2004. Their convoy was attacked by enemy insurgents. After expending all their ammunition, their officer gave the order to fix bayonets and advance. They suffered few, if any, casualties, for something like thirty enemies killed and thirteen captured.

Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Why? Tsar Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, was their Colonel-in-Chief at the time of his execution. They're already ticked off at the Communists for killing their liege, and you can guess how overjoyed they will be to hear that their CiC's granddaughter survived.

Also, I just noticed this, didn't even notice when I watched the show...When they show the scenes of BFP's tanks travelling in a wedge formation across the plain, the tanks guns are traversed slightly out of straight ahead. Dat fire discipline.

[x] “Make sure Wendy's with us again.”

You nod. “Make sure Wendy's with us again.”

“Wen-” Ice pauses and blows a breath out of pursed lips, then nods. “If she thinks she's good to fly again, I'll put her as your wing again.” She says. “And Katya, plus one more, if I can scare up another night witch, or one of us can qualify on NODs tonight.”

You shrug, spearing a T-bone and catching a slid beer- bottled, not canned, which is a nice surprise. “ whatever you need to do, boss. We've just got to get her off those tornados.” You say, looking back at Wendy's strikers on their racks. “how badly did she fuck them up?”

Ice looks back over at them and grimaces. “Pretty badly. The crew got them up to flight ready again, but I don't think they can handle that kind of stress again.”

“That bad?” You ask, worried now- Wendy's your wingmate, at least temporarily, and that makes this your problem too.

Ice shrugs. “Frank, they were junk when the RAF sent them to us. If it hadn't been for Merlin and Kenji, they'd still be junk. Those two are incredible, but I don't think even they could have gotten them back to one hundred percent, and even if they had-” she pauses, then shakes her head.

“Wendy pushed herself way too hard, Frank. Way, way too hard. I don't know why she did it the way she did, but-” She shakes her heads again. “But her strikers can't take it, and I'm not sure she can, either. She's told me more than once she's terrified one of us will get hurt because she doesn't know what she's doing.”

>>
Aah, found it.
>>
“I seem to be walking proof to the opposite.” you state, cutting into the steak- medium rare, almost perfect.

“Regardless. Without Kenji, there's no way those strikers can handle another round like that.” Ice says. “I'll have a talk with her, but keep an eye on her, ok? If she pushes herself like that again, she could really get hurt, and no one wants that, least of all me, ok?”

You nod.

“I'd like to get her some of the strikers like ours-” She motions back to the pair of superstrikers in the hangar- “But there aren't anymore, and unless we're willing to give up Merlin, there won't be.”

“And that's not happening, I need her.” you say.

There's a pause, and you can feel Ice wanting to say something. “What is it, boss.”

Wordlessley, she passes you a piece of paper. “Annapolis thinks it may have another like Merlin.” She says, quietly. “They want to send her here, to us. They want you to fly with her.”

Well, the day started out pretty good, you knew a boot had to drop from somewhere, right?

Because witch politics. As rife with backstabbing as normal politics and as petty and nasty as a high school girl clique. That's the synopsis we got from Nixon by the way. When tricky Dick says it's going to be ugly, it's going to be really fucking ugly,
>>
>>35683730
I wonder what the "initial" witch integration into larger chains of command was like. In pre-modern warfare it was probably unnecessary for witches to be part of a larger military totality, but I can only imagine the political battles putting witch covens in the chain of command precipitated in like...the mid-ish 19th century
>>
>>35683720
My memory is bit hazy now, but don't she want to study Merlin back then?

If that is the case (again, i kinda forget the details now) maybe, maybe she notice the... symptom on Merlin and realize her grandaughter, who everyone thinks is not witches, has same.. symptom. But she want to make sure first so she quite obsessed with Merlin back then.

....Well, we don't even know who is this new transferee yet so read that with tinfoil hat on.
