The spear rests easily in your hands. It feels... Right. Like it's perfect.

You swing it experimentally, revelling in the weight of it, the whisper of wind as it arcs around you. Even the balance is beautiful. It feels like it's dancing around your fingers. The metal feels- Hmm. Clear? It feels clear. You're not even sure what that means.

What you're trying to say is that you really like your spear. Essentially.

Jin is still standing tall across your shoulders, watching your weapon intently. She shifts her weight, and you can feel her talons grasping and flexing on your skin, the delicate balance that lets her use you as a roost without rending. Sheszka steps ups cautiously, running her hands across your own, tracing the contours of your new patterns.

She looks up at you, meeting your eyes with her own.
"You were hot. Burning."
You nod in reply, flexing one hand, watching the colours dance.

"I think I can call fire, yes? And more, besides. I'm not sure yet."
Her expression shifts, worry melting into understanding, then anticipation.

Her eyes glitter, even in the shade of the Harpy's wings.
"Then I will too! Not yet. But I will!"
She punctuates her excited statements with a little hop, both hands holding yours. You smile at your wolf. There's an awful of things you can do today.

>Get some training with your spear! Extra bonus of not facing Mom directly.

It occurs to me that the main advantage of the indestructable spiderbutt-skull is not only that it safekeeps that delicious spiderbutt, but also that it allows Jin to use her perch without worry, even if she's wearing her claws.
>>
>>35750549
Not to mention she can tuck under the skullbutt and stay warm by Lyra's firespiderbutt.
>>
>>35750302
oh my, that new OP image.
>>
>>35750529
Why?
Seriously I don't get why people feel the need to bring this up all the time.

Lyra lives a well adusted life, basically never thinks about her past one and feels very comfortable in her current skin.
Which means her past life is essentially irrelevant and not worth talking about.
>>
Counting!
>>
>>35750616
>Implying her past life has no plot significance.
>>
>>35750641
So, is the big skull, like, ATTACHED to us?
I want to see how the village feels about this.

especially that spooked guard and that one fat merchant
>>
>>35750657
It's an important background trait, yeah, but right now it's not relevant in the slightest for what's going on now. If there's something weird where it needs to be explained, then sure, but for now there's no need to.
>>
>>35750657
>>35750616
It does have significance, but it has nothing to do with her new family I hope.
>>
>>35750529
>>35750616
The biggest problem with telling them is it would be basically
"Hey, I love you and all, but I used to have a family that I also loved before I died, and you guys are all the replacement!"

Best to leave the stuff where it lie.
>>
>>35750657
It really doesn't, yet. It might in the future, but currently the only times it has been relevant were in recognizing what a thing is, and making jokes that no one in our new life can understand.
>>
>>35750616
I second this on the ground that a kid talking about past lives and being murdered then reborn won't be believed.

Seriously, who believes the fanciful stuff kids come out with? Would you believe a kid that started telling you this?

At best, Mom would just smile and humour us. At worst, she'll think the freakishly rapid evolutions is messing with us and be concerned for our mental health.
>>
>>35750616
I think it will probably come up eventually, but not now. I think people (our parents included) are going to ask questions about how we are growing so fast and it might come out.
>>
>>35750691
Everyone will know how capable Lyra is at killing giant monsters. If they didn't already after the crab festival.

The reason for that is that how active you are in your early life significantly affects your XP gain rate for all of it.
So our past life still lacks any reason to be brought up.
>>

Its not actually.
Usually people don't remember it, and the source material makes it something pretty rare and unique, so its not actually common knowledge.

>>
Crap, I just realized that we no longer have a reason to complain about Sara throwing fireballs at us.
>>
>>35750834
Yeah but considering that the entire setting is named for this particular quirk makes it seem more likely to be widely believed. It doesn't occur IRL and that doesn't stop a hell of a lot of people from believing in it.

>>
>>35750907
>that the entire setting is named for this particular quirk makes it seem more likely to be widely believed

That's retarded. The people in-setting don't call it "RE Monster" world. A fictional setting being named after the MC is standard in a lot of works. This has no baring on the in-setting knowledge.

>>
>>35751278
There's still numerous practical reasons for a spider cozy.
>>
>>35750737

So? It's because we are grinding exp like mad.

Evolving PERIOD is a rare trait for young monsters, and two of our friends and two sisters have evolved in the same month, we just happen to have maxed our exp ratio.

That's because instead of having a nice family life, we are out slaying monsters that give full adults pause.
>>
>>35751340
No.
>>
Just to be clear, do we get to keep all of our abilities every time we evolve, no matter what we evolve into?

As excited as you are, the trip to the clearing takes no time. Or you're not aware of time passing. The effect is the same, in any case.

You tear through the last group of trees, emerging into the growing sunlight.

The clearing is the same as you left it. A few hardy plants, driving through the earth, stone, and a thick layer of ash. Dad and Sara made one hell of a number on the whole thing.

Your hands clench, unclench. You can remember the whispered words of the voice. The declaration that it was time to evolve, the promise of power. Earth and fire.
>>

>>
>>35751795
You can feel the ground beneath you, now. Even without mana, without magic, the pulse of the heart of this world thrums through you. It's relaxing, reassuring. The presence of something gigantic, but the feeling that it's embraced you. You stretch your hand forward, and you push your awareness with it.

Soil whispers, rock groans, magma sings. You lift a hand, and the earth follows, shapes forming and dissolving according to your whims. It feels unreal to watch rock run like water- Not even magma, just solid stone, flowing like a river. Sheszka laughs in delight, and you push the wave towards her, chasing the excitable wolf through the clearing, conjuring up obstacles, making her duck or leap as she keeps a step ahead of your power.

Her speed increases, and she bends over, running as easily on all fours as she does on two legs. You push the stone faster, stronger. Pillars erupt around her, and she bounds from one to the next, bouncing of their sides, staying airborne as long as she can. She lets loose a howl, throwing herself forward ever faster-

And she shifts. Somewhere between one step and the next, the girl is replaced by a wolf, brown and gray and white. Sheszka's patterns writ across her paw, her face. She stands nearly 5 feet tall, a wolf the size of a man. Her form flickers between your stones- switching back and forth as she dodges.

You let the earth go, and it whispers quietly to you, sinking back into its original shape. Sheszka trots up to you, her wolf shape dissolving back into a human- mostly human- form.

You laugh, happiness ringing through the meadow.
"When did you learn to do that?"
She scratches her head, one ear flicking, tail wagging.
"I know- I knew bigger wolves could do it. And I am bigger. So I tried! And it worked!"

She's really come a long way with speaking. Do all young monsters pick things up this fast? Now that you think about it- You speak, what, three languages? That's two more than you ever knew as a human.
>>
>>35751769
Sometimes there are shitstorms about much more annoying stuff, so it balances out.
I will murder the first person who brings up husbandos, the /u/boat or shipping in general.
>>
>>35751818

You hand finds it's way to her head, physical praise turning her tail into a softly thumping blur.

Even Jin joins in.
"You were bigger, faster, yes? Is it hard?"
"No. Just... Strange? It doesn't feel the same."

Jin nods- and gestures with a wing to the second eye socket of your skull. She's not even really perching at the moment, Just lazing about in the one hole.

Sheszka stares, then climbs up your back, hauling herself into the curved space in the skull and making herself comfortable. Jin nods sternly, and returns to watching you.

You turn your attention back to your magic, and away from the fact that you are rapidly becoming some sort of monster minivan.

You don't think you can call fire like you did with the earth. The sensation isn't as strong. Like... The earth is a person in the same room, holding your hand, speaking to you. And fire is somewhere else, and it has one of those stupid string and can phones, and you're not sure what it's saying so you're just yelling through the house and you have completely lost control of this metaphor.

You focus on the still fresh memory of reforging your spear. The heat in your hands, the feel of the molten metal- And your power reacts, the cracked pattern on your limbs glowing stronger and stronger, waves of heat rippling the air around your digits. You will it further, and the fire answers, your fists igniting.

Motion at your side draws your eyes, and you turn to find that your little circles of fur have responded to the power as well, flowing in a breeze all their own, colours burning like the fire you hold.

You let it go, and the hair dies down by inches, slowing, solidifying. It's honestly fun to watch. Jin affirms your opinion, chirping in a quiet 'Beautiful' as you ignite them again.

According to the REQM's ask.fm Seranthis was sent down there in the first place to deal with an unspecified threat.

Indeed, but most all of that nasty shit is subterranean in nature. Back when there was a city and the mines were in use, there was a pressing need to deal with these monsters. That need no longer exists.

REQM in Q&A session post thread mentioned that if we wanted to get Seranthis out of the mines our best bet was asking him how he got down there.

We are probably not going to evolve again for a while. XP is based on how much of a challenge a fight is, and our current mix of abilities are strait up bullshit to fight against. We're a fucking lava-bending spell-thief with powerful butt armor and additional bonuses to defense when protecting others. Nearly all our abilities have defensive use, and they all work in tandem. This isn't even going into creative bullshit like hardening liquid metal around our body for instant armor, like some sort of fucking terminator spider.
>>
>>35752581
He himself stated (or at the very least implied) that he had been sent to help stem the flow of monsters into the mines, and prevent them from reaching the city. In any case, we will have to quiz him about it when we track him down.

Nobody says we're going to go all the way down to the mines just yet. This is just about opening up the entrance to the city ruins, the mines are waaay deeper down.
>>
You head deeper into the ruins. Past the wall, the collapsed buildings. It's not long before you find what you're looking for.

The entrance stands silent, the same as it was when you rescued Rie. A mess of collapsed pillars, crumbling stone. And much too small to allow you entrance.

You place your hand on the solemn, still standing column. You can sense the solidity, even weather worn and damaged as it is. You can feel the sheets of rock behind it, the roof lying near sideways against it, the other columns, long broken lying all over. You call for the earth and push.

The whole structure before you shudders. Stone crackles and grinds, pieces moving for the first time in centuries. The diagonal length of rock dissolves, twisting into a twin to your pillar, a roof forming between them above. Rubble shudders, twitches, slides aside, joining together to remake long shattered walls.

Your breath catches as you pant, fingers trembling, your cohorts silent as they watch your work in awe.Another pillar starts to lift, revealing the buried passage- and it stops, falls. The ground trembling beneath it's weight.

Both of your hands rest against the pillar, holding you up as you take deep breaths.

That's a lot harder than you thought.

Or maybe you've just exerted yourself too much already? You weren't exactly holding back with Sheszka.

Jin's voice interrupts your thoughts.
"Are you going to fix them? Rebuild the ruins?"

>>
>>35753293
Do you have

The foggiest

haziest

idea of approximately how silk that would take? Goddamn we would have to force feed every spider in the forest AND Seranthis for years to pull that off.

We'd be better off using our magma magic to make a tower out of actual obsidian. Strong, weather resistant, and damned intimidating! Seriously, the humans would start speaking in hushed tones of the tower of black stone and the skullbutt spider queen who rules it.

Would have a bit of a negative PR effect in the wider world. Let's do it.
>>
>>35753403

We could start small, enough for our family and pack... then as we make more friends and followers, we slowly expand it out...

By the time we are 1 we will probably have something at least the size of a castle town...
>>
You think a moment.

You're not actually sure of what you want to do. What your goals are. You want to open the ruins, at least. But rebuilding the city? If it's even possible...

No, that's not right. You're literally doing it right now. It'd take time, but you could. Raise the walls, restore the statues- Everything. Of course, people might not come back. There's any number of races infighting, the lizards- You haven't even asked Mom about the other forest races. How deep into the woods would you have to go to find them?

Are they still fighting? Do they even care about the others anymore?

It's a question for another time, in any case.

Even your voice sounds tired as you force it out.
"Hnn. Not yet, yes? I think, at least, I would like to fit below again. Speak to Seranthis. See what lies below."
"Broken stones. Giant spiders."

"I think there is more than that, Jin."
"Funny smelling water."
You laugh, turning your back on the half raised structure, dragging your legs as you head for home.

A few minutes see you back in the forest, conversation ringing through the trees as you walk.

"I will get bigger soon, yes."
"I can get bigger when I want."
"It is not the same! At all!"
"Bigger is bigger."
"I will be bigger than you, then!"

You turn your head, watching them argue from the corner of your eye. Sheszka tilts her head carefully, considering the harpy's words.
"Bigger than Alpha? Than Lyra?"
Jin picks up one foot at a time, watching the slow bobbing of your spider half.
"Maybe not, yes? But big."
>>
>>35753458
They nod in unison.
"Me too. I will be bigger, and stronger, and I will get dirt and fire, yes."
"How? Why?"
"Alphas share with the pack. If the alpha is strong, then I am strong."

"Lyra is very strong."
"Yes."

You're not entirely certain how you feel about them bonding over some sort of shared worship.

You arrive at the tree in short order, clambering up with your friends. Dad has made another mess out of enchanting materials and books, and Sara is right beside him, blabbering away and throwing around magical terms you can't be bothered to learn. Mom or Aria is probably above.

You focus in on Dad and Sara.

Perfect. You can distract them, and get stuff done at the same time.

You drop yourself just outside of the circle of 'putting stuff away is hard', and both of them look up.
"Lyra!"
"Hey. What've you been up to all day?"

"Hello Sara. It's barely past noon, Dad."
He rolls his hand, gesturing away the complaint.
"It's... pretty much a day. Kind of."
"Not at all, yes. I've been practising. In the ruins."

He looks up, actually managing to separate his eyes from the book for a second.
"A bit of magic, then?"
"Ah. Not quite. I can do, uh, elemental things? Like Sara and Jin, but different, yes?"

And now they both have books out. This may have been a mistake.
"So-" "What kind of things, yes?" "-What she said."
You bring your hands up in surrender.

"Fire and earth things. More earth than fire, though. I can feel stone, and make it move. However I want. Like water, even. I tried repairing some of the ruins, yes? So maybe, Mom and I could fit through. I was too tired to finish, though."

As if to mock you, Jin and Sheszka are settling into their seats, curling up and snuggling against your fire warmed shell.
This isn't fair at all.
>>
>>35754254
Lyra has muscle definition in my sketches as well
>>
>>35754311
"And the fire?"
"Just my hands, I think? I can heat them, or call fire. The heat doesn't bother me, though. And my arm-bits- The fur, yes? They look like fire when I use it."

"Hmmmm- It seems like different creatures get different abilities, then? Even with the same blessings. Salamanders can ignite their weaponry, from what I've heard. And there's animals that simply spit fire."
"Dragons?"
"No- Well, yes. But I mean things that shouldn't be spitting fire. Was there anything else?"

"Hm. I reforged my spear, yes? With my hands. It felt- I felt like I could control it. Completely. Like the metal, everything, was perfect."
Erics blinks, pen and book momentarily forgotten.
"Huh. Maybe... Both at once? That would work. May I see?"
Sara taps at her book.

"What's the difference between may and can, Dad?"
He replies as you hand him your spear, dropping the weapon into his outstretched hands.
"Manners, dear. It's polite."
"Mom doesn't use 'may'."
"Your mother is a giant spider, who grew up in a forest."

"I heard that!"

So she is upstairs, then. Dad laughs, hands running along the weapon, tapping across it's length.
"It's very well forged. I didn't see it before, so I can't tell, but... Maybe you removed all the impurities from the metal?"
"Impurities?"
"Bits of other metals, not properly smelted things- all sorts."

"Huh. That's kind of- No. Wait, wait. I came over here to ask about the necklace, yes."
Sara laughs this time, folding her book in her laugh while it slows into giggling.
"Heh- It's moving along fairly well. The books are a big help. We can probably change it so your friend can use it by tomorrow. And duplicate the enchantment, at least. Maybe not quite as cleanly. I'm better at burning things than I am at making them."

Learn enchanting from dad, we need to add that to our skill set so we can make the most amazing weapons ever for yourself and others. Be great to sell them as well as silk. Maybe talk with the blacksmith to get good ideas on what to make and the best ways to make them besides our hand forging.

You stifle a yawn. It's early, dammit!

"Hoooow... Excuse me. How do I put the stone into the weapon? Does it need magic? Or enchanting? Can you put in a stone and enchant it? How does enchanting work, anyway? Runes and magic and-"
"Slow down, haha! One at a time."

"Nnn. Stones then, yes."
"Alright. Elemental stones are... well, crystals or stones that contain non-sentient spirits. Most tend to just... leak their element in their raw form, but there's plenty that don't. And processed ones stop as well. Which is pretty much the point of processing them anyway."

"How do they work with items, then? The smith said my shield was resistant to fire, too."
"When you put them into an item- properly put them into an item- The item starts to assume properties of the stone. Your storm stone is refined- It's pretty much a stronger lightning stone, with a bit of wind that managed to slip in. So, your weapon would probably trail lightning, absorb lightning, that sort of thing."

"And enchantments?"
"Here. Look at this."
>>
>>35755412

He opens up his book, waving you over. You shuffle a bit, careful not to jar your sleeping passengers. The page is neatly written, with spiralling designs across one half, notes and arrows pointing towards bits on the other.

Yeah, you have no idea.

"I can't make heads or tails of this."
"Well, the basis of it is there's a component that takes in mana, and a component that spends it- either passively or actively. There's enchantments like your mom's that do some big effect, and there's some that just keep a sword sharp."
"Can they work with the stones?"
"There's a few ways. They can focus the stone's effect, or they could kind of... charge the stone with mana, in a way. Amplifying its effect. Or they can use them to process mana. Spells take less when you're using something attuned to them, so you could use a stone with a matched enchantment to get more uses out of it. It tends to lessen the elemental effect, though."

Huh.

>Ask him to:
>>Enchant it focus the effect. (Shoot lightning! 3/d. Extra lightning damage on spear.)
>>Enchant it to amplify the effect. (More lightning damage! Throwing the spear causes a lightning bolt effect, hurtling it forward faster.)

Guys.

Idea.

We can control magic in action right? Like, outside sources of magic? Like other peoples, and ambient magic like for traps?

We refine our control, and then when we throw the spear we CONTROL it's direction, so that it PIERCES through and streaks back to us.

Like, Rip Van Winkle from Hellsing or some shit.

What makes you think rounded warm bone is more comfortable than rounded slightly warm metal?
>>
It all sounds really exciting, to be honest. You get a momentary glimpse of yourself, striding into battle, the ground churning to lava beneath your feet as you cast bolts of lightning into the fray...

Dad is staring as you giggle.
You cough into one hand, and bring yourself back to the topic.

"Could you do the focus enchantment? With the stone, yes? And I'd like to help."
"We can do that," He says, smiling.
Sara nods eagerly along, clearing away books to make room for the work.

The stone fits snugly into the slot you left in the spear- The metal starting to vibrate as soon as it's set into it. Dad and Sara conspire as they work, etching runes across the surface, mana flowing around them and into your weapon.

You get a moment of your own to shine, setting a pair of inscribed circles of metal around the storm stone, neatly working them into the weapon as if they'd been there all along. Your family was impressed.

With the basis of the enchantment laid down, your father continued his work, painting dust and... something? into the runes, letting them blaze up as he passed each one by.

Your eyes are already drooping, and you can barely keep three open. You offer a groggy thanks, and crawl across the nest, falling facefirst into a pile of blankets. It only takes a few short minutes for your snoring to join your friends, sleeping gently beneath a warm sun.

So we're basically rebuilding the old palace stone by stone? We will never hear the end of it from Nin once she finds out.
