On occasion, the Great Garden of Nurgle spills out into the Materium where the barrier is weak. One such manifestation of his realm is where you, Acerea, were “born.” It was a backwaters moon, surrounding an even more obscure no-name planet. There you tended to the moon-encompassing garden and aided other children of the Lord of Decay in their endeavours. Providing support and motherly care simply came naturally to you, and it brought you great joy to see the fruits of your labor. Both literally and metaphorically.

Eventually you were pulled away from your little oasis by the call of one Bloodletter. Despite the fact she was a daemon of Khorne you sensed that she needed your help more than any creature on your moon. It was exciting - a chance to help a fledgling being grow and reach their full potential. And so you left everything you had ever known behind to stand as Cinder’s ally.

The months following your decision were a blur of emotions, both good and bad. All of it served to remind you of the joy of living, something Papa Nurgle would be proud of. When it came to your daemon friends, you fostered a sisterly bond between Ignitrix and Cinder. The sight of a Lady of Change and a (now) Bloodthirster working together in (relative) harmony brings you hope and further joy. In your mind, you need not be in the limelight so long as they are happy.

However, something has been weighing down the corners of your mind ever since arriving on the Obscenity Engine. Flashes of events and foreign memories fill your vision seemingly at random. It’s worrisome but you’ve kept up your motherly outward appearance all the same. There’s no sense troubling your friends after all, especially since it might cause Ignitrix more undue stress. And that poor little bird needs her rest.

Welcome to the Nurglette Oneshot, part of Khornette Quest.

If you’re a die-hard lover of canon, I suggest you turn away now. Like all things 40k, the gauntlet runs from “worshipping the printed word” to “over the top silliness.” Most of the time it’s somewhere in between. You’ve been warned in advance.

All rolls go against a specified characteristic in the style of Black Crusade. You’ll want to roll under the characteristic value in order to pass the check. The more degrees of success (every multiple of 10 counts as 1), the more awesome of a result. A 1 is a guaranteed success, and a 100 is a guaranteed failure.

Best of three rolls when it’s called for, with a 1 or a 100 instantly taking precedence. If multiple characteristics are being rolled for, each 1d100 counts for its respective test. Any rolls prior to the call for one and those not linking said post will be ignored.

No rerolls or roll modifications are available for Acerea. However, we will be tracking the amount of “ara ara’s.” So there’s that.

If you have any questions/etc, now’s the time. I’ll push the first update in about 10 minutes. I imagine tonight should largely proceed like Iggy's first oneshot flow-wise.

Excessive meta/whining/waifu’ing/etc goes to QTG. Blatant Samefaggotry will be ignored.

In the downtime following the Blood Raven’s “visit,” you find yourself momentarily alone. The corridors of the Engine you walk through are devoid of any sign of life. Cold, uncaring metal surrounds you on all sides. For a daemon used to being surrounded by greenery, it’s slightly disturbing. Yet you continue to wander without purpose, trying to gather your thoughts before returning to Sytili.

“...No I don’t think she knows, Arch-Magos…”

Your head swivels as you try to discern the source of the sudden, reverberating whisper. It‘s mechanical, devoid of emotion, like that of a Tech-Priest. Yet there are no Mechanicus here.

“...She knew what she was getting into…”

A flash of a mechadendrite slicing downwards blinds you momentarily and sees you using a nearby wall for support. What was that?

The voice shifts, this time it’s unmistakably feminine and musical. “Remember, my daughter, protect your step-sisters…”

Another flash, this time of an Eldar-like figure on the bank of a dark green river. Behind her lies the massive, pestilent form of the Plaguefather himself. Unlike Cinder’s and Ignitrix’s experiences with their patrons you can tell this is but a memory. But why are you just now remembering it? And was it at all genuine?

Your vision returns to normal as you break out into a cold sweat. Whatever was happening to you was getting worse. These visions were becoming more and more frequent and vivid.

<Isssss everything alright, Acerea? You seem anxioussss...> The sudden brush of Sytili’s mind against yours catches you off guard.

<Don’t worry about me, dear, I’m f-fine. How are you?> Despite your best efforts otherwise, your “voice” shakes halfway through your attempted dismissal.

The zoanthrope takes a few seconds to respond. <Sssshould I ssssend sssome gauntsss up, or can you make it down to me?>

<I…> You curse the fact her voice is now filled with concern. You’re supposed to worry about her and the others, not the other way around. <No I can make it down to you just…>

<You don’t need to lie to me, Acerea. I’ll come up there myssself. Jussst relax until I get there.>

<But…!>

Her presence fades before you can get another word in. You find yourself angry that your emotions were so easily read. And that now Sytili has chosen to deal with the fact you might be losing it herself. The one small comfort you have is that you sensed she wasn’t planning on telling the others yet. They couldn’t know.

Sighing, you hobble along towards the nearest doorway. The door parts to reveal a cafeteria of sorts, complete with several “windows” offering a view of the void outside. You step inside and pick a spot in the back with your back to the door. Maybe staring into space will help you calm down.

It doesn’t. Not much anyways. By the time Sytili floats in you’ve managed to collect yourself only enough to not be sweating anymore. The Tyranid remains silent until it comes to rest next to you.

“Sssso… what’ssss wrong?”

You wrestle with what to say for a good five minutes. Finally you admit, “I’ve been seeing things. Visions of other places. Memories. I’m not sure if they’re mine or if they’re even real. I didn’t want to worry anyone so…”

“Ssssso you kept quiet. I can underssstand why. Though your flock issss ssssmaller than mine, we’re much the sssame. Neither of ussss can let them ssseeee thissss ssssort of thing.”

“Yeah, yeah. I still don’t want to trouble you though. I can work through this. It’s probably just the same Warp Phenomena that Ignitrix was having issues with earlier.”

Sytili chitters. “That isssss gone. It ceasssed when we sssstarted moving.”

Your eyes widen. “So that means…”

“Whatever issss happening to you issssn’t becausssse of the Engine, yessss.”

Closing your eyes, you bring a hand to your forehead and rub around the base of your horn. “What am I supposed to do then? If you picked up on it so easily, Ignitrix is going to be even quicker. And then she’ll…”

Something pats your shoulder. “Sssshe might be the bessst option though. Her mind issss far more powerful than mine.”

Now there’s a thought. You turn your head towards her and scan her face. It killed you a little inside to have to ask but there’s not much else you can think of. “Couldn’t you help me figure out what’s locked away in my mind? I just need someone to help anchor me, that’s all. But it can’t be Cinder or Ignitrix. They can’t know.”

Her oversized skull tilts to the side. “I sssssuppossse I could. But issss that what you really want? It would have to be a deeper link than anything we've had thusss far. Connecting to the hivemind might be… unpleasssant. Even for you daemonssss if I had to guesss.”

“I sssstill don’t underssstand why you call me that.”

That gets you to smirk at least. “Well maybe you will after this. I’m ready whenever you are.”

The Zoanthrope nods before moving to hover in front of you. Her form illuminates, contrasted heavily with the void behind her through the windows. Moments later her mind slams into yours. Rather, it’s not just her mind. It’s the mind of every Tyranid creature within her domain of control. You can sense everything they do, even their thoughts. You nearly lose yourself in the torrent of sensations before Sytili fishes you out.

Deciding to work backwards from the most recent mental interruption, you try to concentrate on the image of Isha and the Plaguefather. The blackness surrounding you shimmers, revealing the Great Garden’s Poxyards. As before, Isha is on the bank of a fetid river of pure disease with the Chaos God himself in the background. You float above the scene with Sytili, while the memory-you walks forth with a plant in hand.

“Grandfather,” memory-you begins. “I brought you a new strain of toxic fern. I took great care to make it nearly indistinguishable from those the nobles keep on Scintilla.”

Nurgle laughs jollily. “Good, good my child. Tell me though, how is your own garden doing?”

Memory-you bows her head. “It is going well, Grandfather. I’m still very happy you chose to leave it in my care.”

Another booming chuckle. “And I’m happy that you’re happy. Now, show me this fern.”

As a great, decaying hand comes down to carefully pluck the plant from “you,” the Eldar Goddess turns. Contrary to all the other times you’ve seen her, her eyes aren’t filled to brim with tears. “I’m glad you came, Acerea. Though I wish you’dve left the fern behind…”

Isha shakes her head and continues. “No matter. I just wished to impart a small bit of advice given where you’re headed. Eventually you will have to come to terms with the turmoil inside of you. Only then can you truly be healed and reach true happiness.”

“I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

She smiles. “You will, in time. Now there is one other matter. One I have struggled with for nearly an eternity. But I believe it is the only way to save my mortal children.”

“The Eldar, you mean?”

“Indeed. Slaanesh has too great a hold on their souls for me to save them all. It pains me to admit that. Even more so to say that the only solution may be to allow Nurgle here to corrupt them instead.”

(cont)
>>
>>35760186

“Oh come now Isha,” he thunders while turning the fern about in his hand. It’s comically tiny compared to him, like a dreadnaught handling an ant except thrice as much. “Better that they live and experience the joys of living than live in fear of having their souls consumed.”

“So… I’m going to have you try something for me, Acerea. I want you to find a small group and see if you can save their souls in this manner. If not…”

She sniffs, tears falling from her face and installing crystallizing. After catching the spirit stones she tosses them to memory-you. “Save them that way. Put them out of their misery.”

“I understand, Grandmother…”

With that your surroundings begin to fade back into nothingness. Sytili seems to be waiting for you to say something.

I'm more concerned by Acerea feeling hope over simple contentment at the start... Seems almost like she & Iggy traded their patrons' respective emotions, given how cynical bestburd is. I'm still reading, though, so make of that what you will.
>>
>>35760212
So... is she talking about a group of Eldar already in mortal danger? Or are we just gonna corrupt/gank some randomly?
>>
>>35760504

I think that's one of this quest's main themes to be honest. None of the main daemons are the classical archetypes we expect them to be. Maybe that's why they haven't turned and killed one another as strict canon dictates they should. It's also why, if Iggy was right last session, the whole "takeover" thing might actually work out.

>>35760531
It read like she basically said "go find some corsairs or exodites, just don't touch my craftworlds."
>>
>>35760212

You mouth wordlessly for a second before actually deciding on what to say. <Let’s worry about that in a minute. I need to know why the Mechanicus are involved. It has to be somehow related to my “inner turmoil” as Isha put it.>

<If you’re sssure you’re ready, jusssst focus.>

After redirecting multiple trains of thought into a station, you focus on the sound of the Tech Priest’s voice. This time you materialize in a surgical room, more specifically an isolation bay. A small human girl, no more than twelve years of age, is strapped down to a flat, steel table. She’s screaming for her mother and trying desperately to escape her bonds. Looking carefully, you notice said restraints are already cutting into her skin and causing her to bleed.

##Begin Experiment 44521.A: Subject is a twelve year old female from Iocanthus. Her gene sequence is within acceptable range for the Sororitas - No signs of any corruption or insanity. Subject will be subjected to Strain X7 for twelve seconds.##

The same mechanical voice as before echos throughout the room before it begins to fill with a green gas. The girl screams and flails even harder to no avail as it fills her lungs. After the aforementioned time passes, fans kick in and clear the room of the foul chemical.

##No immediate sign of corruption. Vitals within acceptable parameters.##

Another voice speaks in the background, less devoid of emotion. ##For an Agri World child she is holding up remarkably well. How did we acquire her again?##

The first voice turns softens as you assume the Tech Priest turns away from the vox. ##The Planetary Governor was falling to meet the tithe properly. Her daughter was taken as recompense and as a reminder not to fail in the future.##

(cont)
>>
>>35760847

##I see. Look there! Her skin’s already bubbling!##

True to the man’s word, the child’s skin is beginning to erupt in massive boils and rot. If you thought she was screaming before, this is something else entirely. For some reason, it deeply unnerves you. And it shouldn’t. This is supposed to be the best part. You’d recognize the effects of Nurgle’s Rot anywhere.

##Subject is beginning to display expected symptoms. Inoculation Gamma will now be introduced.##

A servo arm descends from the ceiling and plunges a needle into the girl’s arm. It dispenses every bit of the blue liquid inside before withdrawing. Minutes pass, the human’s condition worsening all the while. Finally the Tech Priest in charge of running the log remarks, ##Gamma shown to be ineffective in stopping the taint. Subject will be terminated as per protocol.##

Just as flammers built into the walls of the room spark to life, you hear the other man say one thing: ##Rest in peace. May the Omnissiah save your soul, little Acer-##

And then you’re back in the void with Sytili again.

That it would still disturb her as a plaque demon who does that on a daily basis.

It’s all starting to come together. You always knew that some plaguebearers came from Nurgle’s favorite disease but you hadn’t ever considered you were one of them. Why would you? Before now you had no memories prior to waking up in your flower. Those that were once mortal always had some aspect of their past life carry over - something you had to help the ones on your moon come to terms with more often than not. Of course given what you just saw…

<...It’sss no wonder you repressssssed it,> finishes Sytili. Oh right, she’s here. <I think that’ssss enough for now…>

The cafeteria winks back into existence around you. It’s a good thing you were already sitting. “How am I supposed to tell the others…” you start, only to be cut off by the zoanthrope.

“Don’t. Or leave partssss out. Doesss it really matter if you were once human? Ssssure, it explainssss why you have ssssuch a motherly inclination, but it doesss not affect who you are now.”

What she says makes sense. A child corrupted at that age would either go entirely insane or try to compensate for what they never had. What better way to make sure no one else shared your fate than to be both the corrupter and the actually-present maternal figure?

“I suppose you’re right. It’s just… a lot to take in.” To say the least.

“My my, I think ssssomeone needsss a hug.” You both look at one another in confusion as soon as the words are out of Sytili’s mouth.

Despite everything that just happens, you giggle and mirror her statement. “My my, it seems someone got a little too close during the link.”

“Ssssso help me if I ssssstart calling my Gauntssss ‘Ssssweetie’ I’ll…”

You continue to beam as you reach out and give her a headpat. “It’s probably just temporary. I can still vaguely sense your flock myself.” It’s a half-truth. The only Tyranids you’re aware of are her and a Gaunt in the room below this one. “But even if it isn’t, I think it’s adorable~”

Sytili chitters again as you pat her chitin. “Tyranidssss are NOT adorable.”

“Awwww, of course you are!”

This continues for the next ten or so minutes until the Zoanthrope finally just falls silent under your constant barrage of teasing ara’s. It’s only long after you stop that she remarks, “Feeling better then?”

“Considerably. Thank you.”

“Tell no one thissss happened.”

“I’m supposed to say that, silly.”

Another chitter. You’ll take that as a tacit agreement. It was rather kind of her to let you vent like that either way. Especially since you’ve only just met in the grand scheme of things.

Now that that’s out of the way (hopefully) you can focus on other matters.

“Sssspeaking of, I imagine that will be our main food sssource between sssstopsss. I trusssst that won’t be an issssssue?”

Your right hand comes to cup the side of your face. “Not at all~! In fact I’m glad it’ll be put to good use. My garden on the Raptor was avoided like the plague. Which is a shame because the plague isn’t all that bad.”

Sytili begins to float out of the cafeteria with you in tow. “You may want to check with Ssssinder before my ssstock getsssss too hooked on your biomasssss. Sssshe made it ssssound like sssshe expectsss ssstrains that favor her brand of Chaossss.”

“Hrm… I can’t imagine we’ll have acid-spewing Tyranids overnight but you’re correct. She did seem to have a few ideas in mind. But you know… she does have these blood pits where mortals willingly kill themselves over on the Raptor. Maybe we can either put hers there or bring the meat over here.”

“Either would be fine.”

By now the pair of you are walking into the outer edge of the Tyranid’s influence. Biological wonders abound, much to your delight. “Wonderful~. I’ll just call the Raptor up then and see what I can do. No sense bothering Cinder with the small details.’

“I’ll make ssssure you don’t run into any wallssss.” Adorable.

You tap at your microbead and try to raise Proditus. “Mister Brass Herald? It’s Acerea, how are you?”

“O-oh! Uh hello Acerea. What can I do for you?” The mortal sounds relieved beyond belief.

“F-f-from the biodeck?!”

“That is where my plants are, silly.”

“I uh… okay…”

“Oh and use whatever room you have left on the shuttles for meat from the arena.”

“...W-why?”

“Because otherwise I’ll have to send the Tyranids over there~”

You know, my first instinct when hearing this story was to think that acera is descendant from the plague the little girl (called acera as well) was infected with.
A king of "alex mercer" thing from prototype where the virus falsely assumes itself to be alex mercer because that was the first human whose memories and body it consumed, at a time when it had no memories of its own yet.
Perhaps related to the failed serum that was given to try to cure her.

“Ara, I wonder what made her decide on him. He deserves it though.”

“Yeah… I just wish she’d stop yelling at me…” Well that came out of nowhere.

“Oh honey, she just wants you to stop being bad at your job, that’s all.” Motherly you may be, but there’s this thing called tough love.

“I… what…”

“Just think about it for me, okay? Also tell the Captain we’ll be outfitting his shuttles with some upgrades while they’re over here.”

Now he just sounds defeated and sullen, “...Sure.”

“Thank you dear~”

Sytili shakes her head as you do the same. “Humanssss, utterly usssselesss except assss food.”

“Oh I don’t know. Sometimes they can surprise you. Anyways…”

You spend the next couple of hours planning out how the Tyranids will expand across Deck Eleven and Deck Twelve. In the end it’s determined that you’ll have your main garden on 11 for the Nurgle strain and use 12 for the Khornate one. This decision is largely influenced by the fact Deck 12 is just one deck up from two secondary shuttle bays, making the logistics of meat handling a breeze. Once the swarm gets large enough to warrant more space, Sytili and you will revisit the issue.

For now she seems rather tired. You decide it best to let her get some sleep.

It’s been close to 24 hours since you last saw or heard from your daemon friends. A quick question to the Engine’s computer tells you that they’re up in their quarters. It doesn’t take you long to find your way up there, even after taking the long way around to make sure the incoming shuttles from the Raptor are handled properly.

Once there, you come across an odd sight: Ignitrix is hugging Cinder and crying in the middle of the corridor. Beside her floats a little stuffed Blood Dragon complete with tiny skulls and all. The Bloodthirster doesn’t seem to know how to respond, standing there awkwardly with her arms half-raised. Her tail wag tells you all need to to know regardless.

The scene is so adorable that you can’t resist commenting on it while blushing. “My my, what do we have here?”

Immediately Ignitrix goes into a coughing fit and disengages from Cinder. Along the way we snatches the stuffed animal from the air and clutches it tightly to her chest. Cinder herself chuckles and turns towards you. “Apparently it’s Iggy’s birthday today. I don’t really understand the concept of mortals celebrating being closer to death in such a fashion, but the computer told me one usually is expected to give a gift. So I…”

“So she made me this,” mumbles the Lady of Change. Her face is more red than Cinder’s skin. “Apparently she’s not just a stupid brute…”

That’s Ignitrix for you. In denial to the end. You smile warmly at her and lather your words in motherly affection. “I see~. Did you give her headpats as well, Cinder?”

“ACEREA!” whines Ignitrix. She looks like she wants nothing more than to become one with the deckplates but you know she’s loving the attention.

“You know come to think of it, no,” remarks Cinder. The Bloodthirster immediately applies the palm of her hand to the top of Ignitrix’s head. “She was too busy thanking me for actually caring enough to get her something.”

“Awwww~”

The Lady of Change struggles to get free. “Mrmhpm… I-It’s only because I haven’t gotten something in centuries and I’ve always hated my birthday and…”

It occurs to me that merely feeding nids those who died in battle might not be exactly what we want to get them to become khornish. Merely prevent them from becoming nurglich through their diet.
They should actually fight. maybe do a lot of internal combat to survive? send off some baby nids to participate in the arena while they are still small and its a somewhat fair fight (enough for people to be willing to fight them)

You wink at Cinder and speak over Ignitrix’s rambling. “I understand, sweetie. But I do have to apologize! I left your gift down in the Garden. Do you mind waiting?”

“N-No…” The Lady of Change shoots a furtive glance at Cinder, whose tail is still wagging. “You don’t have to get me anything though...” She’s being sincere best you can tell.

“Shhh. Had I known I would have had something prepared. Just give me a bit, okay~?” With that you back up around the corner. Lingering just for a moment, you hear the bird sniff and then eep.

It takes you perhaps an hour to make the round trip. Along the way you work with Sytili and the computer to come up with two presents. The first is a stuffed doll, more specifically one of Cinder herself. The second is a flower from your garden, one that is self-sustaining and perpetually changes color. Both in hand, you once again make some noise before rounding the bend. The two daemons are much as you left them, though they’ve brought out chairs into the hallway.

“Sweets too? My, someone’s getting spoiled~” you tease as you finally join them. Between bites, you offer out the doll and the flower. “I thought she would be the perfect companion for that Blood Dragon. And this way Cinder doesn’t even have to be around for you to hug her~”

Ignitrix carefully takes the doll like one would a baby and nuzzles against it. This time it’s Cinder who goes a deeper shade of red. Afterwards the Lady of Change turns to the flower and raises an eyebrow. “What about the flower?”

“A clipping from my garden. It will never die and constantly changes color. I figured the constant change might be something you’d enjoy.”

“That’s… actually really thoughtful…” She immediately fashions it to sit alongside her chaos-themed headwear before looking at the pair of you with watery eyes. “T-T-Thank you both, I… I...”

>>
>>35765348

Her wings flutter, then she dives into her room while mumbling something incomprehensible. Poor thing must have finally had too much. Cinder simply chuckles and offers out Ignitrix’s vacated seat. “Well that should keep her happy for a good long while. Since you’re here, how is our Tyranid friend doing?”

I thought the Mechanicus part was dumb and angsty.
>>
>>35766056
Like, a character doesn't need a tragic backstory to be complex. Since this is like the third tragic backstory you've put into the quest, it's starting to get a little old. I was fine with her being a plain old moon gardener, but then Acerea was a woman, and then she was a plaguewoman, or maybe she was just a plague, but she was still Acerea? Also, slective amnesia is one of the worst plot devices in that it is overused and nonsensical.
>>
>>35766056
I thought it was humanizing in a traditionally 40K grimdark sort of a way. A little reminder that of the individual and how they suffer and all of that.
>>
>>35766141
Third tragic backstory? How do count that? This is the first I find genuinely tragic.
>>
>>35766141

Sytili made the excellent point that it doesn't affect who she is now. Maybe it provides context but it doesn't suddenly mean she's any less the Acerea we know. As for the amnesia or mental block or whatever you want to call it, such things are pretty well covered as being an actual part of Nurgle's Rot.
>>
>>35766141
Besides, who cares about the past? This backstory was useless except for a vague goal of "Hey, go chat up some Eldars or kill them or whatever." We didn't get to use this information from our past to affect the present at all, in fact, the only thing we got to do in the present was make some presents for the Main Character's best friend.

Unless there is another Nurglette oneshot or Acerea suddenly brings up her plan to convert some Eldar to Cinder and Ignitrix (which is probably how this plan should've been conveyed to the players), it seems like this plan will either take a lot of threads to develop, what with Acerea's introverted nature, or be the players' next priority because they can never not metagame and utilize information the MC (Cinder) does not have..

Also, where was the "Tactical Gardening Action"? All we got to do was make gifts and move tyranids around. This oneshot wasn't actiony, it was full of crying and hugging. I expected us to at least START corrupting the Blood Ravens' geneseed and their battle barge too.
>>
>>35766319
Basically, Nurglette oneshot came about too early to be as good as it could have been, and we should have instead focused on Cinder presenting her gift to Iggy and the ensuing reaction.
>>
>>35766319
>Acerea suddenly brings up her plan to convert some Eldar to Cinder and Ignitrix
And that's what's great about this whole thread.

There is now a canon reason why our Chaos Ranger squad will never include Slaaneshis.

I don't care what anybody thinks, this was masterfully handled on your part ELH. Bravo.
>>
>>35766319
>Acerea's introverted nature

You've pointed out the cause of 90% of what you've complained about. She's simply NOT the extroverts the other two MCs are. This wasn't about actually moving the story along so much as giving us a chance to see behind the ara. If anything I'm amazed she opened up THAT much to a relative stranger and a tyranid to boot.

Also not every oneshot needs to satisfy some quota of action or reach so many milestones. Hell there are quests that literally spend entire threads on a single conversation.
>>
>>35766359
In fact, can KQ #15 start where it would have originally started if not for Nurglette oneshot? I'd much rather read about the two characters who are actually interesting than read about the one whose only claim to fame is that she has a tragic backstory which makes her act like an anime archetype all the time.
>>
>>35766464

Fuck off Vaelys. Or start saging your posts.

>"Dur, my memories must've rotted 'cuz Nurgle!"
THEN HOW WERE THEY ABLE TO DREDGE THEM BACK UP?

>"I like rot except when it happens to me!"
GEE, WHAT A HYPOCRITE.
>>
Well, I'm looking forward to the next KQ, and sincerely hope it doesn't have more of the dumbest plot-points borrowed from Final Fantasy 7 in it. Though seeing how this oneshot went, I should probably despair that everyone will be getting a tragic backstory where thew Imperium shot their dog.

Hey, all I've done is discover ELH's method to writing complex characters: giving them unnecessarily tragic backstories and then exploiting a character trait like "TSUNTSUN" or "ARA ARA~"
>>
>>35766757
Uh dude, the only "tragic backstory" is Acerea, and that was short, simple and entirely reasonable for her character.

Now you can make the case that she isn't that complicated, and that'd be mostly right, but it's not like she lacks the capacity for depth at all. Nurgles bunch just tend to be simple, so far as I can tell.

Maybe you should just... find some other quest to pay attention to?
>>
>>35766837
Nurgle cults are born out of trauma, hopelessness and despair. If anything, this made acreaquest rather canonical. Complaining about tragic backstories of nurgle worshippers basically means someone's being a clueless faggot.

I just disagree with ELH's idea that Acerea needs to be made more complex than she already is with a hamfisted backstory that was already taken care of with "Oh, I was born on a moon and immediately went to tend to Nurgle's garden." The Mechanicus story where she got plagued to death and rebirth (how?) just made her origins weird and confusing.
>>
>>35766868

Considering Zoanthropes aren't formed from humans the second part's at least right.

As for how she got on the Hulk it could be literally anything. Born there, remnant of another fleet, came from another ship, you name it.

>>
>>35766943
I don't see her telling the truth to other daemons anyway, even after she remembers it. That'd be daft, especially with a confidante still outside the current daemon-powerstructure.
>>
>>35766950
The dude's saying that those aren't mutually exclusive. Acerea gets a nice introduction to Nurgle's disease at the same time a warp storm goes by, and by their power's combined, she becomes a daemon.
>>
>>35766943
Okay, so the warp storm was going on already, and the techpriests were trying to fix it, so they experimented on a little girl, which backfired FOR SOME REASON despite all the safety measures taken, and then the little girl became a plague monster instead of y'know, dying, because Nurgle loves turning little girls into busty, voluptuous women. Why did she get elevated if the warp storm was already spreading across the moon and wrecking people's shit?
>>
>>35766950
Her mortal form died in Magos lab of Nurgle's Rot, and she was reborn in his garden in a venomous flower as a daemon. Then a plague swept across a backwater moon somewhere, causing enough of a disturbance to create a warp storm and draw her into the materium.
>>
>>35766998
Why her though, what made her special?
>>
>>35767013

Nothing. That's how Nurgle's Rot works. Unless they are completely destroyed they become a plaguebearer. The Warp Storm thing is just a bit of flavor to explain why a moon-sized Warp garden is in realspace

Seriously, all this delving into her personal history strikes me as unnecessary and makes her origins less impressive, what with her being formed from a little girl who caught a plague.
>>
This thread was a big waste of time, which could have been spent on doing more productive things, like tactically cultivating some Blood Ravens into being corrupted by Chaos or something fun, but no, instead what was focused on was Acerea's past that we already knew the important details of. Why does a daemon need humanizing? Acerea is not human, and nothing that happened before she started life as a daemon should matter nor should it be mentioned, as it lessens her awesomeness as a daemon. To be honest, I'm one of the anons, bitching about how he completely blanked on our gunship in today's quest, but I feel that is a legitimate gripe with his handling of the thread.

Conversely, I am also one of the anons arguing that this Nurglette quest was pretty cool. We now have a reason to tell those Slaaneshi whores to go fuck themselves, and now have the possibility of Khornate/Tznetchian/Nurgle Eldar. I am OK with this.

Also hamsters have now conclusively been established as seriously evil little bastards, which is very true. Kill em all I say.

It was an unpleasant moment, which the story needs. It can't be all kawaii and lulviolence, or it'd honestly get pretty boring pretty fast. A mechanicus fuck-up on this level both fits the setting nicely -and- provides a counterpoint in tone to other elements of the story. It also hints at a theme of this trio, perhaps, actually being daemon princes altogether, which may or may not be correct, and allows for speculation, which in turn maintains interest.
>>35767427
>Hamsters are evil
Fuck yes.
>>
>>35767459
I actually think it tied in well with what we intended to do. We were going to head after Eldar next, this just further reinforces that and gives us a clear objective as to what we will do there.
>>
>>35767472
The story does not need unpleasant moments if they're completely irrelevant. That shit happened to a little girl named Acerea, not Acerea.
>>
>>35767507
We also have an AI aboard our ship and sufficient archaeotech to make us a point of interest for the mechanicus. Eventually, we are bound to run into them. This gives us an option to make that encounter more...personal. It's better to kill an enemy you know, than a random mook.
>>
>>35767522
But that was the origin of Acerea.
>>
>>35767531
A warp-storm on a moon was the origin of Acerea as we know her. When one tells at the story of a person's life, do they describe how the sperm penetrated the egg and started the process of pregnancy? NO, they start out with a baby. Sometimes, they skip the baby part and focus on that person when they are capable of doing things.
>>
>>35767554
I already explained why mechanicus involvement is likely above. This is a foreshadowing. That quite a few people didn't catch it makes it a good one.
>>
>>35767554
I disagree. When you tell the story of someone's life, you MUST include where they come from and the circumstances that they grew up in. That is exceedingly important. That's why you see it in EVERY biography.

At the rate Acerea is proceeding, she isn't likely to become Nurgle's heir anytime soon. Given the title of this quest, tactically gardening actions could have risen her infamy, but instead she spent all her time in flashbacks, helping the tyranids move in, and getting two gifts ready.
